While there has been a large amount of discussion by the media and government officials regarding the need for rules and regulations surrounding name, image, and likeness (NIL) in college athletics, to date, there is a lack of research on the effects NIL has on higher education fundraising. Thus, this study examines NIL's effects on university and athletic fundraising and fair competition among universities. In surveying chief financial officers and athletic department directors in Power and Non-Power universities, we aim to understand university officials’ perceptions regarding the early impact NIL is having on higher education. The survey results offer valuable guidance on the regulation of NIL to ensure that it benefits both universities and student-athletes.

Fraud uses deception to obtain a financial reward from its victim. There are strong negative stereotypes and victim blaming discourses towards fraud victims, with research indicating that fraud victims are unlikely to report incidents for many reasons, including a high degree of shame and stigmatisation. In this way, it can be assumed that fraud victims are averse to seeking help in the aftermath of an incident. Drawing from romance fraud reports lodged with Scamwatch (an Australian online reporting portal for fraud) between 1 July 2018 and 31 July 2019, this article examines the help-seeking behaviours of those targeted by romance fraud. The analysis found a variety of explicit and implicit help-seeking behaviours, encompassing both personal justice and altruistic reasons. The analysis demonstrates that despite the victim blaming that exists, this did not always act as a barrier to reporting or requesting help. Overall, this article challenges some of the perceived aversity to help-seeking behaviour of fraud victims. It also provides a foundation for improving responses and support to those who actively engage in help-seeking behaviour.

Objective To analyze the possibility of using golf as a metaphor for teaching finance. Study reports on a pilot experience of teaching finance using golf as a metaphor.Golf can be a means of promoting the engagement of finance students.Theoretical framework: a normative and positive economic decision theory is used as a framework. Sports can be a means of engaging students in finance education programs. Golf, in particular, can fulfill this role and serve as a powerful tool for building and maintaining social networks relevant to high-level professionals. Methods: thirty undergraduate students voluntarily participated in a pilot teaching program over five days. The program included sessions (in the field) on the fundamentals of golf and financial decisions, and students looked for synergies between these two domains. Participants showed a high level of interest in both the sports practice sessions and the finance activities. Results: the results suggest that psychological errors common to golf and financial behavior—for example, overoptimism, overconfidence, and emotional judgments—can be diagnosed and addressed through sports practice. In addition, the participants’ selfassessment indicates the possibility that the program can induce behaviors in line with the corporate environment. Conclusions: Despite golf’s contribution to the teaching of business subjects, it is still absent from formal curricula.

Resumo Objetivo: Os homens estão mais inclinados a assumir riscos do que as mulheres? A resposta a essa pergunta é de relevância imediata para várias questões econômicas, incluindo o comportamento humano em relação ao consumo de medicamentos e procedimentos médicos. Este trabalho tem como objetivo identificar os benefícios percebidos do consumo de medicamentos, centrado na avaliação do risco farmacêutico. Originalidade/valor: A literatura documenta que riscos e benefícios podem ser considerados os principais trade-offs na tomada de decisão do consumidor, inclusive na indústria farmacêutica. É um tema atual com alto potencial de impacto social por causa dos muitos casos identificados de Covid-19. Nos países em desenvolvimento, a maioria dos medicamentos é utilizada por indivíduos que se automedicam, pois o acesso aos cuidados de saúde pode ser insuficiente. A automedicação é um problema potencialmente maior, pois nesse caso o uso de medicamentos geralmente segue o conselho de amigos, parentes e vizinhos. No entanto, há pouca evidência empírica sobre esse problema no contexto dos países emergentes. Design/metodologia/abordagem: Trata-se de uma pesquisa com mais de mil indivíduos em que se utilizou um modelo de regressão estendido (MRE) em um dos maiores países do mundo, o Brasil. Resultados: De acordo com os resultados obtidos, as mulheres percebem mais riscos e benefícios do uso de medicamentos e procedimentos médicos. A percepção dos benefícios dos medicamentos pode ser explicada pelas seguintes dimensões: risco (danos pessoais, alerta de risco e conhecimento do risco), gênero, uso regular e benefícios dos procedimentos médicos. Em relação às dimensões de risco, quanto menor a percepção de danos pessoais e quanto maior a percepção de alerta e conhecimento de risco, maiores os benefícios percebidos do uso de medicamentos./ Abstract Purpose: Are men more inclined to assume risks than women? The answer to this question is immediately relevant to various economic issues, including human behavior concerning medical remedies and procedures consumption. This paper aims to identify the perceived benefits of the consumption of medications centered on pharmaceutical risk assessment. Originality/value: The literature documents that risks and benefits can be considered the main trade-offs in consumer decision-making, including the pharmaceutical industry. It is a current theme with a high potential for social impact due to the many identified cases of Covid-19. In developing countries, most medication is used by self-medicating individuals, as access to health care can be insufficient. Self-medication is a potentially greater problem, as in this case, medication usage often follows advice from friends, relatives, and neighbors. Yet, there is little empirical evidence regarding this problem in the context of emerging countries. Design/methodology/approach: A survey of over 1,000 subjects using an extended regression model (ERM) in one of the biggest countries in the world, Brazil. Findings: The results reported that women perceive more risks and benefits from medication usage and medical procedures. The perception of the benefits of medications can be explained by the following dimensions: risk (personal injury, risk alertness, and risk awareness), gender, regular usage, and the benefits of medical procedures. Regarding risk dimensions, the lower the perceptions of personal injury and the higher the perceptions of risk alertness and risk awareness, the greater the perceived benefits of medication usage.

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) may significantly impact the well-being of patients and their families. The therapeutic use of cannabis for ASD has gained interest due to its promising results and low side effects, but a consensus on treatment guidelines is lacking. In this study, we conducted a retrospective analysis of 20 patients with autistic symptoms who were treated with full-spectrum cannabis extracts (FCEs) in a response-based, individually-tailored dosage regimen. The daily dosage and relative proportions of cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) were adjusted based on treatment results following periodic clinical evaluation. Most patients (80%) were treated for a minimum of 6 months. We have used a novel, detailed online patient- or caregiver-reported outcome survey that inquired about core and comorbid symptoms, and quality of life. We also reviewed patients’ clinical files, and no individual condition within the autistic spectrum was excluded. This real-life approach enabled us to gain a clearer appraisal of the ample scope of benefits that FCEs can provide for ASD patients and their families. Eighteen patients started with a CBD-rich FCE titrating protocol, and in three of them, the CBD-rich (CBD-dominant) FCE was gradually complemented with low doses of a THC-rich (THC-dominant) FCE based on observed effects. Two other patients have used throughout treatment a blend of two FCEs, one CBD-rich and the other THC-rich. The outcomes were mainly positive for most symptoms, and only one patient from each of the two above-mentioned situations displayed important side effects one who has used only CBD-rich FCE throughout the treatment, and another who has used a blend of CBD-Rich and THC-rich FCEs. Therefore, after FCE treatment, 18 out of 20 patients showed improvement in most core and comorbid symptoms of autism, and in quality of life for patients and their families. For them, side effects were mild and infrequent. Additionally, we show, for the first time, that allotriophagy (Pica) can be treated by FCEs. Other medications were reduced or completely discontinued in most cases. Based on our findings, we propose guidelines for individually tailored dosage regimens that may be adapted to locally available qualified FCEs and guide further clinical trials.

IntroductionLanguage production is a finely regulated process, with many aspects which still elude comprehension. From a motor perspective, speech involves over a hundred different muscles functioning in coordination. As science and technology evolve, new approaches are used to study speech production and treat its disorders, and there is growing interest in the use of non-invasive modulation by means of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS).MethodsHere we analyzed data obtained from Scopus (Elsevier) using VOSViewer to provide an overview of bibliographic mapping of citation, co-occurrence of keywords, co-citation and bibliographic coupling of non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) use in speech research.ResultsIn total, 253 documents were found, being 55% from only three countries (USA, Germany and Italy), with emerging economies such as Brazil and China becoming relevant in this topic recently. Most documents were published in this last decade, with 2022 being the most productive yet, showing brain stimulation has untapped potential for the speech research field.DiscussionKeyword analysis indicates a move away from basic research on the motor control in healthy speech, toward clinical applications such as stuttering and aphasia treatment. We also observe a recent trend in cerebellar modulation for clinical treatment. Finally, we discuss how NIBS have established over the years and gained prominence as tools in speech therapy and research, and highlight potential methodological possibilities for future research.

Senna occidentalis, popularly known as ‘fedegoso’ in Brazil and South American regions, is a very problematic weed species in pasture areas as well as in annual and perennial crops. Management strategies of this species range from the use of crates to the practice of cultural management with straw and the use of herbicides. Knowledge of the ability of this species to emerge from great depths is important for the adoption of preventive management strategies. The research aimed to verify how deep this species emerges in Amazonian soil. It was found that even at 10.0 cm depth the seedlings could emerge and form with the same height as those kept near the soil surface. For the species, the best depths were between 2.0 and 6.0 cm, indicating that these conditions favor its development.

This study verifies the association between the text sentiment of news items and the value of capital investments in the equity crowdfunding market. It also analyzes the influence of geographic attributes on the investments made. Based on data for 736 investments made in different ventures in the largest equity crowdfunding platform in one of the main emerging markets, this study’s results indicate that the attributes of ventures can affect the amount of capital invested in them. In addition, published mass media news items that have a greater quantity of positive words can stimulate larger investments in these ventures. On the other hand, the geographic distance between the entrepreneur and the investor can negatively affect the value of these investments. These results are relevant since they can contribute to the definition of fundraising strategies on the part of entrepreneurs and platform managers.

La calidad de vida es un concepto integral que incluye ideales de salud, bienestar psicológico, relaciones sociales y condiciones ambientales. La Calidad de Vida de los Estudiantes de Medicina (CVEM) se ha convertido en un tema notorio en la última década, incluso en la comunidad científica. Se han señalado crecientes índices de ansiedad, depresión, estrés y consumo de drogas relacionados con el estilo de vida universitario. El objetivo de este trabajo fue resaltar la efectividad de las intervenciones utilizadas para mejorar el CVEM. Se adoptó el método de revisión sistemática para realizar el estudio. Todas las etapas de la revisión siguieron la guía PRISMA. Se utilizaron las palabras de búsqueda "Medical Student" y "Quality of Life" en las bases de datos: PubMed, ERIC, EMBASE y Scopus. Se incluyeron artículos de los últimos diez años que habían evaluado una intervención para mejorar las puntuaciones del CVEM. Se incluyeron diez estudios alta calidad según MERSQI, que cumplió con los criterios de elegibilidad La mitad de los estudios evaluados CVEM utilizando el instrumento WHOQOL-BREF Las intervenciones o valoraciones encontradas fueron: ejercicios de relajación, resiliencia y ambiente educativo, apoyo social recibido, actividad física, protocolo unificado para el tratamiento de trastornos emocionales, mindfulness y cambio curricular, destacando la efectividad de tres estudios que trajeron como intervenciones: ejercicios de relajación, resiliencia en un ambiente educativo, apoyo social e implementación de un protocolo unificado para el tratamiento de los trastornos emocionales. mostrar formas en las que las escuelas de medicina pueden mejorar CVEM.

Conforme discuti em editorial anterior (Mendes-Da-Silva, 2020), a rejeição de artigos é algo com o qual devemos aprender, e inevitavelmente conviver, faz parte da rotina profissional do pesquisador. Mas isto precede um objetivo suposto comum a todos nós indivíduos pesquisadores da área de negócios: a publicação de nossas pesquisas, e que estas sejam julgadas relevantes para a sociedade. A esse respeito, uma das principais maneiras de aquilatarmos o nível de interesse nos nossos trabalhos é a citação que esses recebem (Garfield, 1955; Lee, Law, & Ladkin, 2014), ou mesmo menções na mídia (Pulido, Redondo-Sama, Sordé-Marti, & Flecha, 2018). Mas, afinal, o que faz um artigo ser mais citado (Hall & Page, 2015)?

Neste editorial eu gostaria de compartilhar com a comunidade um aprendizado: lições aprendidas do que um periódico científico pode proporcionar aos colegas pesquisadores ao optar por não publicar o manuscrito submetido. Em algum momento, a rejeição de trabalhos acontece com todos nós, e pode ser uma experiência de aprendizado e desenvolvimento (Sullivan, 2015). Um dos aspectos mais frequentemente considerados na caracterização de distinção de um periódico científico é a sua taxa típica de aceitação, ou de rejeição, de submissões (McGrail, Rickard, & Jones, 2006). Tendo em vista a relevância desse parâmetro para autores, editores e leitores, pesquisadores nas últimas décadas têm dedicado atenção a investigar variações de taxa de rejeição conforme a área de conhecimento, e evidentemente de um periódico para outro (Hargens, 1988).

A Revista de Administração Contemporânea (RAC), desde o início de 2020, passou a aceitar Artigos-Tutoriais. Para incentivar a submissão de Artigos-Tutoriais, a RAC criou duas chamadas para trabalhos: Martins (2019) e Lanka, Lanka, Rostron e Singh (2019). Essas duas chamadas, ainda em aberto na data deste Editorial, oficializaram o início de uma nova seção da revista, que já nasce cercada por grande expectativa de tornar-se, em um futuro próximo, fonte importante de consulta aos métodos relevantes à pesquisa empírica em Administração.

Este é o último editorial que escrevo como editor-chefe (EIC) da nossa Revista de Administração Contemporânea (RAC), em cumprimento a um mandato voluntário pro bono com duração definida (2018-2021). Nesta oportunidade eu devo agradecer e reconhecer o trabalho profissional de algumas pessoas com as quais tive a grata oportunidade de trabalhar, e aprender, durante esses três últimos anos. Ao despedir-me desse papel, aproveito para deixar um breve registro resumido do trabalho realizado no dia a dia entre junho de 2018 e maio de 2021, em nome da boa prática de governança editorial de informar.

2020 ficará marcado na História como um ano de crise. Um ano difícil, de muita perda, muita incapacidade e muita tristeza. Nosso special issue sobre o COVID-19 é uma tentativa de extrair algo deste tempo devastador. De refletir sobre os desafios que vivemos e o que aprendemos com eles. Numa palestra proferida em 2020, Jared Diamond, autor de Guns, germs and steel, declarou que o coronavírus não era o maior desafio da humanidade. Os grandes desafios do planeta para ele são a dificuldade de lidar com a diversidade e a inclusão, o uso insustentável dos recursos do planeta e a crescente desigualdade que marginaliza grande parte da população mundial. Na visão do autor, o COVID-19 poderia talvez nos ajudar a lidar com esses problemas, dependendo de como reagíssemos. Isto porque a crise gerada por esta pandemia deixou claro para todos que fronteiras são cada vez mais fluidas, que habitamos um único ecossistema e que tudo o que fazemos tem impacto em nós mesmos, mas também nos outros. Partilhamos dessa visão. E percebemos que, diante de uma necessidade de transformação tão profunda, o papel da educação é absolutamente fundamental. Uma educação renovada, que emerge da crise sem querer dar todas as respostas certas, pois já sabemos que elas não existem, mas nos ajudando a fazer as perguntas e a refletir sobre o que de fato importa.

List of Reviewers in 2020 for the Journal of Contemporary Administration

É explícito o crescimento da quantidade de artigos, decorrentes de pesquisa científica, que diariamente são colocados ao dispor da sociedade por meio de publicação em periódicos científicos. De fato, conforme ilustra a Tabela 1, em 2018 foram publicados aproximadamente 2,6 milhões de artigos científicos, sugerindo uma taxa de crescimento anual ao redor de 3,8% desde 2008. Ao longo desse período, enquanto países economicamente desenvolvidos como os Estados Unidos, Alemanha, Reino Unido e Canadá apresentaram taxas de crescimento anual inferiores à média mundial (0,71%, 1,28%, 0,67% e 1,19% respectivamente), observa-se um aumento percentual significativo de publicações nos países de economia emergente – destacando-se o crescimento (anual) da China (7,81%), Índia (10,73%), Rússia (9,88%), Brasil (5,42%) e Irã (10,99%). Este crescimento é algo muito positivo a priori, dado que a publicação científica continua a ser a melhor forma de validar o conhecimento e de os autores verem os créditos reconhecidos. Contudo, ele impõe um conjunto de custos igualmente crescentes. Destacamos não apenas custos financeiros, mas também custos que costumam ser esquecidos, tais como carga de trabalho cada vez mais onerosa para os avaliadores e alocação de recursos para processar submissões (sim, existe um custo considerável nessas atividades). Colocados em conjunto, e observadas condições de estoque e de fluxo, parece razoável examinar e manter sob observação a sustentabilidade da publicação científica como a conhecemos, especialmente aquela de acesso aberto. O campo de pesquisa em gestão e negócios, assim como demais campos de conhecimento, está sujeito a essas preocupações, e a Revista de Administração Contemporânea (RAC) compartilha essas preocupações.

Finance literature documents associations between a family’s financial literacy and its propensity to borrow. However, most studies focus exclusively on formal loan markets. Based on 2,023 observations about financial behavior of Brazilian families, we examined the impacts of financial literacy on informal borrowing, such as loans from friends or moneylenders. Using multinomial logit models, we compared financial literacy’s effects on the propensity to take informal loans between families that did not borrow at all and those who took bank loans. Financial literacy is measured by the investment in capitalization bonds, a financial instrument in the Brazilian market. The results suggest that financial literacy’s relevance to informal loans may exceed that for formal credit channels.

Resumo Neste artigo utilizamos microdados do Cadastro Único combinados com dados da Relação Anual de Informações Sociais (Rais) para examinar a duração do emprego entre indivíduos de famílias beneficiárias do Programa Bolsa Família. Para tanto, estimamos modelos de riscos proporcionais de Cox para comparar a duração no emprego entre beneficiários e não beneficiários do programa utilizando uma base de dados com mais de três milhões de indivíduos pertencentes a famílias de baixa renda. Os resultados sugerem que o risco de desligamento do emprego para os beneficiários do Programa Bolsa Família é entre 7% e 10% menor do que para os não beneficiários. Modelos paramétricos também foram ajustados para verificação de robustez, produzindo resultados equivalentes aos do modelo de Cox. Em todos os casos, a participação no programa foi observada por meio de uma covariável variando no tempo, extraída diretamente das folhas de pagamento do programa.

este estudo utiliza dados do Survey of Consumer Finances (scf) de 2007 e 2013 para examinar a propensão à poupança das famílias americanas no período de pré e pós-crise econômica, baseando-se no modelo de dois períodos de consumo/poupança de Bowman, Minehart e Rabin (1999). Esse modelo assume existência de assimetria no comportamento de poupança dos agentes em resposta a choques positivos e negativos na renda. Os resultados obtidos via modelos logit sugerem que a crise tenha aumentado a relevância de fatores como número de filhos, idade, grau de instrução, renda e incerteza econômica; enquanto patrimônio, tolerância a risco financeiro, horizonte de investimento, saúde e possuir casa própria foram fatores que perderam relevância. As evidências sugerem que eventos da magnitude da crise de 2008 podem ocasionar mudanças no comportamento financeiro dos agentes, as quais são inteiramente explicadas pelos choques financeiros.

A literatura econômica documenta que eventos extremos podem induzir alterações na propensão ao risco. Este estudo investiga se a crise 2008/2009 afetou o comportamento de investimento em diversos ativos, financeiros e reais, por parte de dezenas de milhares de cidadãos residentes em diversas regiões dos Estados Unidos. Os resultados obtidos por meio de modelos logit sugerem que a crise de 2008/2009 pode ter induzido significativa mudança na preferência por diferentes ativos, tais como trusts, títulos de dívida, imóveis, e planejamento da aposentadoria. Os resultados deste estudo podem ser contributivos para políticas públicas acerca do comportamento de investimento das famílias, especialmente mediante contexto de crise, além de orientar a proposição de novos produtos financeiros por parte da indústria financeira

List of Reviewers 2019 for the Journal of Contemporary Administration

As pressões sobre indivíduos que desempenham o papel de pesquisadores, para que esses contribuam para a produção de conhecimento, constituem um tópico de elevado interesse (Silva, 2019). Os impactos da avaliação de desempenho, nos níveis individual e institucional, são inúmeros e invariavelmente implicam na capacidade de progressão profissional, assim como acessar recursos para pesquisa. Em função da percepção de que a produção de resultados de pesquisa pode definir o futuro profissional de indivíduos e/ou a consolidação de instituições de pesquisa, constata-se, em alguma medida, a busca crescente por maior quantidade de artigos científicos. Contudo, existe em paralelo crescente preocupação com a produção de pesquisa de maior impacto. Ao redor dessas questões, um rol expressivo de aspectos relevantes ganha espaço.

Este editorial é dedicado a apresentar um relatório resumido acerca dos principais aspectos do desenvolvimento da Revista de Administração Contemporânea (RAC) entre junho de 2018 e outubro de 2019, bem como das principais estatísticas editoriais e de distribuição. O número de artigos enviados no ano foi o maior da história da Revista. A RAC manteve e aperfeiçoou sua interface na Internet para o envio e avaliação de artigos com todo o seu conteúdo com acesso gratuito, manteve o número de fascículos publicados em seis por ano, deu continuidade e ampliou o processo permanente de renovação do Corpo Editorial Científico, e de maneira pioneira no Brasil passou a adotar política de dados, materiais e códigos abertos (em linha com recomendações e modernas práticas editoriais de nível internacional em favor dos benefícios esperados decorrentes da ciência aberta).

Phosphate fertilizers of organic origin may represent a viable alternative for the replacement of mineral fertilizers in the nutrition of crops such as forage sugarcane. This study aimed to investigate the effects of phosphate fertilization with bone meal and single superphosphate on the concentration of phosphorus (P) in the plant tissue, total soluble solids and yield aspects of forage sugarcane. A complete randomized block design was used, in a 2 × 5 factorial scheme, with four replicates. The treatments consisted of combining two phosphorus sources (single superphosphate and bone meal) and five P2O5 doses (0 kg ha-1, 50 kg ha-1, 100 kg ha-1, 150 kg ha-1 and 200 kg ha-1). Sugarcane plants fertilized with the addition of bone meal showed an increase in height and number of nodes (13 % and 15 %, respectively), when compared to the mineral fertilization with single superphosphate. The sugarcane attributes, in response to the P2O5 doses, were described by quadratic functions. The dose of 95.80 kg ha-1 of P2O5 in the bone meal led to the highest concentration of P in the plant tissue (3.60 g kg-1). The comparison between the sources of P at the doses of 100 kg ha-1 and 150 kg ha-1 of P2O5 showed that the total soluble solids content was 8.62 % and 13.84 % higher, respectively, in plants fertilized with bone meal.

“Science should be ‘show me’, not ‘trust me’!” Ao redor dessa frase Stark (2018, p. 613) discute a necessidade da repetição de estudos científicos, intencionando principalmente conferir robustez aos resultados de pesquisas. A replicabilidade dos trabalhos é aí apontada como o padrão ouro para a pesquisa científica, sendo a transparência o requisito central para que estudos possam ser replicados ou reproduzidos (Janz, 2015; Marques, 2019). Portanto, a transparência na pesquisa em negócios é algo preponderante para a sua credibilidade, bem como seus impactos diversos, conforme destacam The Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA - https://sfdora.org/), e Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE - https://publicationethics.org/data) (Mendes-Da-Silva, 2018). Mas, quantos de nós temos assegurado a transparência de nossos resultados de pesquisa, por meio do compartilhamento de dados, materiais e/ou códigos (devidamente comentados) utilizados em análises qualitativas, estatísticas ou econométricas (Gandrud, 2018)? [...]

É inegável que a revisão pelos pares é a pedra angular da ciência, mas a qualidade e a eficiência do processo editorial dependem de uma estrutura complexa caracterizada por colaboração em grande escala, além de ser sensível a motivações, incentivos e contextos institucionais (Mendes-Da-Silva, 2018). Conforme Nassi-Calò (2017), a revisão por pares, um dos pilares que sustenta a comunicação científica, foi pela primeira vez proposta em 1831 por William Whewell à Royal Society de Londres. Desde então não se tem verificado alterações de maior vulto no processo de revisão de trabalhos para publicação. Neste editorial, relativo ao quarto número do volume 23 da Revista de Administração Contemporânea (RAC), julguei oportuno abordar a evolução de um assunto que se apresenta sensivelmente relevante para o futuro próximo da revisão de trabalhos científicos no contexto da Ciência Aberta, conforme destaca Ross-Hellauer (2017): Revisão pelos Pares Aberta (Open Peer Review [OPR]). O advento da OPR coincide com o acontecimento da Ciência Aberta a partir do surgimento de periódicos de acesso aberto, e de abordagens a respeito da forma com que a pesquisa é conduzida e disseminada, julgadas não clássicas. É também caracterizada como um movimento no sentido de maior transparência e participação, e explorando novas formas de colaboração, comunicação e difusão do conhecimento. A OPR vem acontecendo de formas diversas, mas é ainda responsável por uma pequena porcentagem das revisões realizadas. Apesar de mais periódicos adotarem essa abordagem alternativa, ainda não está claro se a intensidade do emprego da OPR está aumentando.

Neste editorial, o segundo do volume 23 da Revista de Administração Contemporânea (RAC), julguei oportuno abordar um assunto que se apresenta sensivelmente relevante para dirimir esforços redundantes de pesquisa no campo de negócios: as duas maneiras mais comuns de produzir artigos de revisão de literatura, revisões narrativas (RN) e revisões sistemáticas (RS), conforme testemunham Bolderston (2008); Grant e Booth (2009); e Pautasso (2013). Isto é, a caracterização, e a distinção, de trabalhos cuja contribuição essencial seja creditada à revisão de literatura narrativa (Green, Johnson, & Adams, 2006), em relação àqueles dedicados a realizar revisões sistemáticas (Fisch & Block, 2018) constitui-se relevante para a produção de trabalhos que permitam o entendimento sistematizado da literatura a respeito de determinado tema.

Using a comparative approach between Brazil and other Latin American countries, this article aims to analyze the association of the national pride with individuals’ well-being. For this end, we used the Latinobarómetro database for the years 2000 and 2009. The Latinobarómetro is a public opinion survey conducted by a non-governmental organization based in Santiago, Chile, that applies a questionnaire in 18 Latin American countries with about 20,000 respondents representing about 600 million residents. From simulations using binary response (logit) models, the main results suggest that in 2009 in Brazil, pride in being Brazilian started to have an effect on the probability a person reports being very happy, which did not occur in 2000. This was different from other Latin American countries in 2000, where people did report being very happy.

A literatura de finanças documenta associações entre alfabetização financeira de famílias e sua pro­pensão a tomar empréstimos. Contudo verifica-se predominância de estudos que se concentram exclusivamente em mercados formais de crédito. Com base em 2.023 observações sobre comporta­mento financeiro de famílias brasileiras, examinamos impactos da alfabetização financeira sobre a tomada de empréstimos em mercados informais, tais como empréstimos obtidos com amigos/conhe­cidos, ou mesmo agiotas. Com o emprego de modelos logit multinomiais, mensuramos os efeitos da alfabetização financeira sobre a propensão a tomar empréstimos na informalidade, comparando dois grupos: famílias que não contrataram nenhum tipo de empréstimo, e aquelas que tomaram emprés­timos bancários. Adotou-se como proxy para o nível de alfabetização financeira o consumo de um produto financeiro encontrado no mercado brasileiro, o título de capitalização. Os resultados sugerem que a alfabetização financeira pode ter maior relevância na propensão a empréstimos informais compa­rativamente ao crédito formal.

Starting from sociological perspectives on complexity, we show how the social capital of boards and owners networks affects the implied cost of capital of companies listed on Brazilian stock exchange. We specifically show arguments and evidence that the effect of the relational resources found in the direct, indirect, and heterogeneous board’s ties reduces the cost of capital while relational resources embedded in shareholder networks increase the cost of capital. Our results show that while the increase in the relational resources of the board reduces the implied cost of capital, an increase in these shared resources in the ownership relationships of the firm increases the cost of financial capital.

Presentation of papers from the Behavioral Finance Forum.

This article compares capital budgeting techniques employed in listed and unlisted companies in Brazil. We surveyed the Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) of 398 listed companies and 300 large unlisted companies, and based on 91 respondents, the results suggest that the CFOs of listed companies tend to use less simplistic methods more often, for example: NPV and CAPM, and that CFOs of unlisted companies are less likely to estimate the cost of equity, despite being large companies. These findings indicate that stock exchange listing may require greater sophistication of the capital budgeting process.

The study of the role of collaboration networks in the production of knowledge is important and has attracted the attention of a substantial number of researchers and policy makers around the world. This paper aims to analyze the structural properties of relationship networks among Finance researchers in Brazil. By applying Social Network Analysis to data from 532 articles produced by 806 researchers between 2003 and 2012, this article's results suggest that: (a) the Brazilian environment has structural features that indicate the existence of Small Worlds; (b) a small fraction (~3%) of researchers has regular production; (c) the higher the centrality of researchers in the network, the greater the number of articles published by them.

This paper aims to analyze the impact of reclassifications trends in credit rating decisions in capital structure of listed non-financial companies in Latin America. To verify both the existence of this association were employed data belonging to all non-financial companies listed in Latin America, possessing ratings issued by the three major international ratings agencies international (i.e. Standard & Poor's, Moody's and Fitch) in January, 2010. When considering data for the period 2001-2010, through analysis of panel data, the main results suggest that the reclassifications of ratings seem have no informational content to the capital structure decisions of firms. However, some results indicate that companies classified in the worst levels of risk, and which are on the verge of the rating reclassifications, tend to use more debt than other companies, suggesting the existence of market timing.

Literature shows that there are significant associations between health and happiness. Various countries are considering, contemplating or formally incorporating the happiness variable into their public health policies. Moreover, the private sector has shown interest in the topic. Based on that This article examines the biases in the perception of satisfaction with life among young adults in two Brazilian cities. The study explores the associations between aspects of life and perception of happiness because public policies associated with happiness require an improved understanding of the subjectivity of the sense of well-being. A survey conducted among 368 college students enabled analysis through Multivariate Analysis of Covariance (MANCOVA) and linear regression. The results suggest that, although there were no significant differences in general satisfaction with life between the two cities, there were indications of focusing illusion in the perception of happiness caused by expectations arising from the feeling of personal insecurity in a metropolis.

This study analyzes the impact of imminent reclassification of credit rating on the decision-making regarding capital structure of non-financial corporations listed in Latin America. Despite the importance attributed by the market agents and the existence of empirical evidence of the effect caused by rating in the capital structure of companies in developed countries, this issue is still incipient in Latin-American countries. For this purpose, all the non-financial corporation owners of, at least one corporate rating issued by an international rating agency were taken into account, with the requirement of being listed on a stock exchange in at least one Latin-American country. Through a data panel analysis comprising the period between 2001 and 2010 and by making use of the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM), the main results that were achieved did not indicate that non-financial corporations listed in Latin America, with imminent reclassification of ratings, adopt less debts than those without an imminent reclassification of their ratings. These findings suggest that the imminent reclassifications of credit ratings do not present important information for managers of non-financial corporations in Latin America when making decisions about capital structure.

College students frequently show they have little skill when it comes to using a credit card in a responsible manner. This article deals with this issue in an emerging market and in a pioneering manner. University students (n = 769) in São Paulo, Brazil’s main financial center, replied to a questionnaire about their credit card use habits. Using Logit models, associations were discovered between personal characteristics and credit card use habits that involve financially risky behavior. The main results were: (a) a larger number of credit cards increases the probability of risky behavior; (b) students who alleged they knew what interest rates the card administrators were charging were less inclined to engage in risky behavior. The results are of interest to the financial industry, to university managers and to policy makers. This article points to the advisability, indeed necessity, of providing students with information about the use of financial products (notably credit cards) bearing in mind the high interest rates which their users are charged. The findings regarding student behavior in the use of credit cards in emerging economies are both significant and relevant. Furthermore, financial literature, while recognizing the importance of the topic, has not significantly examined the phenomenon in emerging economies.

Social Network Analysis (SNA) is an emerging research field in finance, above all in Brazil. This work is pioneering in that it is supported by reference to different areas of knowledge: social network analysis and corporate governance, for dealing with a similarly emerging topic in finance; interlocking boards, the purpose being to check the validity of the small-world model in the Brazilian capital market, and the existence of associations between the positioning of the firm in the network of corporate relationships and its worth. To do so official data relating to more than 400 companies listed in Brazil between 1997 and 2007 were used. The main results obtained suggest that the configuration of the networks of relationships between board members and companies reflects the small-world model. Furthermore, there seems to be a significant relationship between the firm’s centrality and its worth, described according to an “inverted U” curve, which suggests the existence of optimum values of social prominence in the corporate network.

Neste artigo, a teoria de cópulas é utilizada para analisar os co-movimentos entre os mercados de capitais do Brasil e dos EUA. Na finalidade de implementação de uma estratégia de alocação de ativos é importante entender os eventos extremos - tanto os positivos (boom) como os negativos (crashes) - e seus efeitos sobre os mercados. Os índices de mercado usados são o IBOVESPA e o S&P 500 cobrindo o período de 03/2001 a 04/2007. A aderência aos log-retornos das principais cópulas encontradas na literatura financeira é avaliada. Os seguintes critérios foram escolhidos: o Log-likelihod, o critério de informação de Akaike e o critério de informação bayesiano. Os resultados mostram que a cópula de Joe-Clayton simetrizada é a mais adequada para modelar a estrutura de dependência entre os log-retornos do IBOVESPA e os do S&P500. Este trabalho difere de alguns estudos já realizados [e.g. Mendes e Moretti(2005) e Canela e Collazo(2005)], pois leva em consideração a modelagem de cópulas dinâmicas introduzida por Patton (2006). Finalmente, através dos índices de dependência caudal ao longo do tempo, pode-se concluir que a ocorrência de eventos extremos negativos (crashes) no mercado norte americano tende a afetar mais o mercado brasileiro quando da comparação da ocorrência dos eventos extremos positivos (booms).

In the emerging field of behavioral finance, where details of human behavior concerning financial decision making are broached, implications of cognitive psychology and sociology are considered. In this way, scientific production, still small but making steady headway, of this thematic in the national scope has essentially laid more focus on the consequences of the cognitive biases of agents, which can reduce the validity of judgments which have been made. Some of the cognitive biases considered in literature, such as overconfidence and procrastination, are influenced by the sense of control that each person possesses. In this way, this article aims to verify associations between age and sense of control, analyzing the mediating effect of other personal characteristics on this association. The study stems from data collected during the first trimester of 2006, from 421 people living in Brazil. The main results suggest a significant quadratic association, like an inverted U curve, between age and sense of control, with this relationship being influenced by the level of education and the perceived general health conditions of each individual. It would seem, therefore, that the evolution of people’s sense of control during their lifetimes is influenced by their education and global health.

The objective of this paper is to analyze the relationship between the voluntary disclosures of relevant information on the websites of a sample of 282 non-financial Bovespa-listed publicly-quoted companies. Based on the relevance of the corporate information (financial and governance) assessed by the information intermediaries and that provide the basis for constituting weighted disclosure indices the results suggest that there is more disclosure: i) the bigger the firm is and the bigger the return on company shares; ii) in companies that have a special type of corporate governance; iii) for those categories of corporate information that are more requested by the rating agencies and by stock brokers; iv) in companies with larger debts.

The role played by the board of a firm is one of the main aspects considered in literature on corporate governance around of the world. simultaneously, the social and institutional relations have been seen as preponderant factor for the happened results of the performance of such boards of big companies. However not yet research is verified that analyze the role of the boards from the Social Network Analysis (SNA) in Brazil. In this manner, this study aims to verify the existence of associations between centrality level, density and cohesion of the boards of Brazilian companies and firm performance. Then, we evaluate 615 individuals, that had formed the boards of the 90 listed companies in the Novo Mercado of the S˜ao Paulo Stock Exchange in 2007. The analysis was lead in two phases. In the first one we present the configuration of the networks of board members, in second place, we verify associations between structure of the network and performance. It was verified that the centrality, density and the cohesion of the firms, in terms of its board members, are related with performance, some times in terms of Return Over Assets (Roa), some times in debt. Of this form, we conclude that organizations most located in the networks of corporative relations tend to present greater yield and minor debt. (Full article in Portuguese only)

A transparência com que as empresas disponibilizam informações ao mercado tem sido reconhecida como um dos principais pilares das boas práticas de governança. Paralelamente, o antigo paradigma da comunicação passa por transformações decorrentes da era digital. As empresas estão aumentando a utilização da Internet como meio de relacionamento com os investidores, e com isso estão oferecendo maiores graus de transparência ao mercado. Este artigo tem como objetivo verificar a existência de associações entre características das empresas e a disseminação voluntária de informações financeiras usando a rede mundial de computadores, tomando como referência as empresas brasileiras. O estudo consiste em cross section realizado a partir de dados referentes a 291 empresas não-financeiras listadas na Bovespa em 2002. As evidências sugerem que o maior tamanho da empresa, assim como o menor retorno anual de suas ações, está associado a maior soma de informações financeiras disseminadas no site corporativo.
