An efficient and service-oriented transportation network is a necessary resource for successful less-than-truckload operations. The design and evaluation of transportation networks are mainly driven by quantitative particularly cost-oriented measures, such as transport and transshipment costs. This type of measurement, however, simply cannot represent the manifold performance of a transportation network. In particular, incorporating network concentration into network design decisions overcomes the shortcomings of purely cost-oriented decisions because spatial network concentration is at the root of many aspects of network performance (e.g., congestion and network vulnerability). This paper suggests modifications to the network concentration index and the hubbing concentration index from the passenger airline context for less-than-truckload road transportation. The modified indices enable information to be conveyed by network concentration into less-than-truckload network design decisions and provide a suitable perspective to include service-oriented aspects into network design.

Purpose – Due to the continued high failure rate of logistics alliances, the purpose of this paper is to propose incorporating the widely neglected dynamic capabilities approach into the explanation of logistics alliance performance. Design/methodology/approach – The authors identify specific characteristics of logistics alliances that are used to argumentatively develop a framework of logistics alliance management capabilities. Findings – We propose an initial framework of logistics alliance management capabilities, based on the dynamic capabilities approach of strategic management, with the aim of improving logistics alliance success. Research limitations/implications – The presented framework offers a basis for a wider range of empirical studies. Qualitative researchers are encouraged to further specify and better understand the sub-processes that underlie logistics alliance management capabilities in different alliance settings. Quantitative studies could help to reliably assess the differences and performance implications of these capabilities. Practical implications – The authors ' conceptualization supports managers in their relevant strategic and organizational attempts to enhance logistics alliance success. Originality/value – This paper contributes to the logistics literature by making a more general yet established construct accessible to logistics scholars and practitioners. The roots of the authors ' logistics alliance management capabilities construct in dynamic capabilities provide a framework that is new and potentially more comprehensive than the collection of somewhat isolated alliance success factors that have hitherto been proposed in the logistics literature.

Vor dem Hintergrund eines zunehmend globalen Wettbewerbs und einer schwierigen wirtschaftlichen Lage stehen sowohl Messeveranstalter als auch Aussteller unter hohem Kosten- und Wettbewerbsdruck. Aus diesem Grund stellt Effizienz einen der wichtigsten Erfolgsfaktoren in der Messebranche dar. Die Messelogistik bietet in diesem Zusammenhang ein groses Optimierungspotenzial, das Aussteller und Messeveranstalter in zunehmendem Mase erkennen und nutzen. Aussteller beauftragen Messespediteure nicht mehr nur mit dem reinen Transport der Messeguter, sondern mit der Organisation der gesamten Messelogistikkette. Messeveranstalter integrieren die Messelogistik starker in ihr Serviceportfolio, um zum einen ihren Kunden ein umfassendes Angebot zu bieten und zum anderen starkeren Einfluss auf die logistischen Prozesse und Kosten auf dem Messegelande zu nehmen.

The author wants to discuss how the dynamics of global value chains and the implementation of the concept of Supply Chain Management impact the process of European Integration. While Value Chain research has a strong economic focus, including international trade and developing countries issues (Kaplinsky, 2004), Supply Chain Management, SCM is focused on the individual company level, vertical co-operation and corporate strategy. Both perspectives are inseparably intertwined. However, with the following reflections he wants to emphasise the inter-company perspective of SCM. In explicating the conceptual alternatives of SCM, SC Governance and their dynamics in a general way, he wants to lay the groundwork for the final conclusions regarding the potential impacts of SCM on European Integration.

Des entretiens approfondis avec cinquante entreprises industrielles et de distribution et autant de prestataires de services logistiques ont permis d’identifier les facteurs cles de la performance dans le domaine des systemes d’information logistique.

The impact of e‐commerce on the business environment is often praised but seldom analyzed with scrutiny. In this paper we try to depict the underlying logistically relevant aspects of e‐commerce and their impacts on logistics service providers. This seems to be of considerable importance, as logistics is seen as the back‐bone of e‐commerce operations. However, the firms specializing in this field are commonly neglected. We argue that the logistical implications of e‐commerce can be differentiated into two main categories: the rise of e‐marketplaces; and the elimination of supply chain elements (disintermediation). By analyzing these two categories and their major logistical implications in detail we deduct strategic consequences for logistics service providers.

Das Schlagwort von der Globalisierung der Markte und des Wettbewerbs ist in aller Munde. Obwohl schon die gesamte Zeit nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg durch eine zunehmende Internationalisierung der wirtschaftlichen Aktivitaten gekennzeichnet ist, sind es gerade die Entwicklungen des letzten Jahrzehnts, die zu teilweise gravierenden Veranderungen der Wettbewerbsbedingungen im internationalen Kontext gefuhrt haben und Unternehmungen zu neuen Uberlegungen zur Organisation ihrer Aktivitaten Veranlassung geben. Beispiele derartiger Veranderungen sind1: das verstarkte Aufkommen neuer Wettbewerber aus den sogenannten Schwellenlandern, z. B. in Sudostasien, die zunehmende Prasenz weltweit operierender Unternehmungen aus Japan und aus anderen Industrienationen auf dem deutschen Markt, der Zusammenbruch des Kommunismus in der Sowjetunion und Zentral-/ Osteuropa sowie die okonomische Neuorientierung der Volksrepublik China, das Entstehen groser Wirtschaftsblocke wie der Europaischen Union, der NAFTA, der ASEAN-Staaten und der MERCURSOL-Staaten sowie die rasante Entwicklung und Diffusion neuer Technologien.

Mit der verstarkten Einbindung von Unternehmungen in interorganisationale Netzwerkstrukturen im Zuge zunehmender Arbeitsteilung kommt der logistischen Integration wachsende strategische Bedeutung zu. Fur die kontinuierliche Entwicklung der Wettbewerbsfahigkeit logistischer Netzwerkstrukturen sind organisatorische Rahmenbedingungen zu etablieren, die eine netzwerkweite Diffusion logistischen Know-hows ermoglichen. Voraussetzung hierzu ist die gezielte Forderung organisatorischer Lernprozesse. Grundvoraussetzung fur die Realisierung der unter komplexen Wettbewerbsbedingungen notwendigen Flexibilitat wie auch fur die netzwerkweite Entwicklung des logistischen Know-hows sind dezentrale, offene, an den Prinzipien der Selbstorganisation ausgerichtete Organisationsstrukturen. Die Bedeutung der Logistik als strategische Ressource liegt vor allem in den organisatorischen Handlungsroutinen, die eine integrierte Steuerung komplexer Wertschopfungsprozesse ermoglichen.
