We present the mini-proceedings of the workshop on ``Parton fragmentation in the vacuum and in the medium'' held at the European Centre for Theoretical Studies in Nuclear Physics and Related Areas (ECT*, Trento) in February 2008. The workshop gathered both theorists and experimentalists to discuss the current status of investigations of quark and gluon fragmentation into hadrons at different accelerator facilities (LEP, B-factories, JLab, HERA, RHIC, and Tevatron) as well as preparations for extension of these studies at the LHC. The main physics topics covered were: (i) light-quark and gluon fragmentation in the vacuum including theoretical (global fits analyses and MLLA) and experimental (data from e+e-, p-p, e-p collisions) aspects, (ii) strange and heavy-quark fragmentation, (iii) parton fragmentation in cold QCD matter (nuclear DIS), and (iv) medium-modified fragmentation in hot and dense QCD matter (high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions). These mini-proceedings consist of an introduction and short summaries of the talks presented at the meeting., Comment: 43 pages, mini-proceedings Workshop ECT*, Trento, Feb. 25 - 29, 2008

We discuss the production of photon-pion and pion pairs with a large invariant mass at collider energies. We present a study based on a perturbative QCD calculation at full next-to-leading order accuracy, implemented in the computer programme DIPHOX. We give estimations for various observables, which concern the reducible background to the Higgs boson search in the channel H --> gamma gamma, in the mass range 80-140 GeV at the LHC. We critically discuss the reliability of these estimates due to our imperfect knowledge of fragmentation functions at high z and a subtle interplay between higher order corrections and realistic experimental cuts. We conclude that, whereas the invariant mass spectrum of photon-pion pairs is theoretically better under control, in the dipion case large uncertainties remain., Comment: 26 pages Latex, 14 eps figures, replaced by published version

We discuss the production of pion pairs with a large invariant mass in hadronic collisions. We present a study based on a perturbative QCD calculation at full next-to-leading order accuracy, implemented in the computer programme DIPHOX. We provide a comparison of various predictions with the corresponding observables measured by the E706 fixed target experiment. Discrepancies between data and next-to-leading order calculation are carefully analysed. We classify the theoretical next-to-leading order distributions with respect to their infra-red sensitivity, and explain which distributions need improvements. Further, we comment on the energy scale dependences of non pertubative effects., Comment: 33 pages LaTex, 18 eps figures

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
We discuss effects induced by beyond leading order contributions to photon pair production. We point out that next to leading order contributions to the fragmentation component of the signal lead to a change in the shape of distributions. This is already mildly visible in present Tevatron data though stringent isolation criteria tend to suppress the fragmentation component considerably. We expect the effect to be experimentally confirmed in future data samples with higher statistics which would serve as a precision test for QCD., Comment: 11 pages, 5 eps figures, uses feynmf.sty

We analyse LEP and PETRA data on single inclusive charged hadron cross-sections to establish new sets of Next-to-Leading order Fragmentation Functions. Data on hadro-production of large-$p_{\bot}$ hadrons are also used to constrain the gluon Fragmentation Function. We carry out a critical comparison with other NLO parametrizations.

The Les Houches Workshop on Physics at TeV Colliders took place from June 8-18, 1999. One of the three working groups at Les Houches concentrated on QCD issues, both at the Tevatron Collider and at the LHC. Besides the interest in QCD in its own right, QCD dynamics plays an important role in the production mechanisms for any new physics process that might be observed at either collider, as well as any processes that may form backgrounds to the new physics. This writeup serves both as a pedagogical overview of QCD as well as an update on the current status of the field., Comment: 179 pages, 65 figures

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
We discuss the production of photon pairs in hadronic collisions, from fixed target to LHC energies. The study which follows is based on a QCD calculation at full next-to-leading order accuracy, including single and double fragmentation contributions, and implemented in the form of a general purpose computer program of "partonic event generator" type. To illustrate the possibilities of this code, we present the comparison with observables measured by the WA70 and D0 collaborations, and some predictions for the irreducible background to the search of Higgs bosons at LHC in the channel $h \to \gamma \gamma$. We also discuss theoretical scale uncertainties for these predictions, and examine several infrared sensitive situations which deserve further study., Comment: 45 pages Latex, 16 eps files plus some metafont files; replaced by the version to appear in Eur. We review the phenomenology of pi^0 production at large transverse momentum in proton-induced collisions. Uncertainties in the next-to-leading-order predictions of Quantum Chromodynamics are discussed. The comparison with data reveals that the disagreement between theory and experiment lies essentially in an overall normalization factor. The situation for pi^0 production is contrasted with that of prompt-photon production in hadronic collisions., Comment: 21 pages (Latex), 13 figures (Postscript)

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
High statistics fixed target and ISR inclusive photon production data are compared to next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD calculations. The dependence of the theoretical predictions on the structure functions, and on the theoretical scales is investigated. It is shown that the data cannot be simultaneously fitted with a single set of structure functions and scales. However, it is argued that as long as one restricts the data/theory comparison to the xT range where the theory is reliable, i.e. stable with respect to the scale variation, there is no need to introduce an additional primordial kT dependence except for Be data. Finally a precise determination of the strong coupling constant, alpha_s, is performed from the direct photon production cross sections obtained in high statistics pbar p and pp collisions at the CERN SPS (UA6) by a NLO QCD analysis., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, Moriond QCD 1999

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
We discuss fixed target and ISR inclusive photon production and attempt a comparison between theory and experiments. The dependence of the theoretical predictions on the structure functions, and on the renormalization and factorization scales is investigated. The main result of this study is that the data cannot be simultaneously fitted with a single set of scales and structure functions. On the other hand, there is no need for an additional intrinsic $k_{_T}$ to force the agreement between QCD predictions and experiments, with the possible exception of one data set. Since the data cover almost overlapping kinematical ranges this raises the question of consistency among data sets. A comparative discussion of some possible sources of experimental uncertainties is sketched., Comment: 22 pages, 3 tables, 10 figures, Latex

High Energy Physics::Experiment ,Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
We report the first precision measurements of the scaled momentum, the charge multiplicity, and the thrust of hadronic jets in the Breit frame in Deep Inelastic Scattering nu(mu)N and charged cur rent events over the Q(2) range from 1 to 100 GeV2. The neutrino data, obtained in the NOMAD experiment at the CERN SPS, extend the Q(2)-evolution of these parameters by two orders of magnitude, and with commensurate precision, when compared to those reported by the ep and e(+)e(-) experiments. - Abstract
A search was made for a new light gauge boson X which might be produced in pi(0) -->, gamma + X decay from neutral pions generated by 450 GeV protons in the CERN SPS neutrino target. The X's would penetrate the downstream shielding and be observed in the NOMAD detector via the Primakoff effect, in the process of X --> pi(0) conversion in the external Coulomb field of a nucleus. With 1.45 x 10(18) protons on target, 20 candidate events with energy between 8 and 140 GeV were found from the analysis of neutrino data. This number is in agreement with the expectation of 18.1 +/- 2.8 background events from standard neutrino processes. A new 90% C.L. upper limit on the branching ratio Br(pi(0) --> Y + X)< (3.3 to 1.9)X 10(-5) for X masses ranging from 0 to 120 MeV/c(2) is obtained. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. High Energy Physics::Experiment - Abstract
NOMAD is a neutrino oscillation experiment designed to search for v(tau) appearance in the CERN-SPS wide band v(mu) beam. Signal detection relies on the identification of I: charged current interactions using kinematic criteria. The analysis of the 1995 data sample yields no oscillation signal. Combining all studied tau decay modes, a limit of sin(2)2 theta(mu tau) < 4.2 x 10(-3) is obtained for large Delta m(2) at the 90% confidence level. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. The NOMAD experiment is a short base-line search for v(mu) - v(tau) oscillations in the CERN neutrino beam. The v(tau)'s are searched for through their charged current interactions followed by the observation of the resulting tau(-) through its electronic, muonic or hadronic decays. These decays are recognized using kinematical criteria necessitating the use of a light target which enables the reconstruction of individual particles produced in the neutrino interactions. This paper describes the various components of the NOMAD detector: the target and muon drift chambers, the electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters, the preshower and transition radiation detectors and the veto and trigger scintillation counters. The beam and data acquisition system are also described. The quality of the reconstruction and individual particles is demonstrated through the ability of NOMAD to observe K-s(o)'s, Lambda(o)'s and pi(0)s. Finally, the observation of tau(-) through its electronic decay being one of the most promising channels in the search, the identification of electrons in NOMAD is discussed.

Direct photon production cross sections obtained in high statistics $\bar{p}p$ and $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=24.3$ GeV at the CERN SPS are used in a next-to-leading order QCD analysis. From the ( stat.)~\pm0.0033\,(syst.)~^{+0.0077}_{-0.0034} \,(t cross section difference $\sigma(\bar{p}p~\to~\gamma X)~-~\sigma(pp~\to~\gamma X)$ and quark distributions measured in deep inelastic scattering, a determination of the strong coupling constant, $\alpha_s$, is performed via a measurement of \ms. This measurement yields a value \ms\ = $210 \pm 22 \,(stat.) \pm 44 \,(syst.) ^{+105}_{-36} \,(theo.)$ MeV. The corresponding value of $\alpha_s$ expressed at $M^2_Z$ is $\alpha_s(M^2_Z)=0.1112~\pm0.0016\

We report the first precision measurements of the scaled momentum, the charge multiplicity, and the thrust of hadronic jets in the Breit frame in Deep Inelastic Scattering nu_muN and anti nu_muN charged current events over the Q^2 range from 1 to 100 GeV^2. The neutrino data, obtained in the NOMAD experiment at the CERN SPS, extend the Q^2-evolution of these parameters by two orders of magnitude, and with commensurate precision, when compared to those reported by the ep and e^+e^- experiments.
