Search

It is essential to examine the physical or chemical properties of molecular gas in starburst galaxies to reveal the underlying mechanisms characterizing starbursts. We used non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) to extract individual molecular or physical components involved in the star formation process in NGC\,253. We used images of 148 transitions from 44 different species of the ALMA large program ALCHEMI. Additionally, we included the continuum images at ALMA Bands 3 and 7 from the same dataset. For the five NMF components (NF1--5), we obtained that their distributions correspond to various basic phenomena related to star formation: i) low-density gas extended through the galactic central molecular zone (NF2), ii) shocks (NF3), iii) starburst regions (NF4), and iv) young star-forming regions (NF5). The other component (NF1) is related to excitation; three components obtained by NMF (NF3, 1, and 5) show a strong dependence upon the upper state energies of transitions, and represent low-, intermediate-, and high-excitation, respectively. We also compared our results using principal component analysis (PCA) previously applied to the same dataset. Molecular components extracted from NMF are similar to the ones obtained from PCA. However, NMF is better at extracting components associated with a single physical component, while a single component in PCA usually contains information on multiple physical components. This is especially true for features with weak intensities like emission from outflows. We report the first successful ALMA follow-up observations of a secure $z > 10$ JWST-selected galaxy, by robustly detecting ($6.6\sigma$) the [OIII]$_{88\mu m}\,$ line in JADES-GS-z14-0 (hereafter GS-z14). The ALMA detection yields a spectroscopic redshift of $z=14.1793\pm0.0007$, and increases the precision on the prior redshift measurement of $z=14.32_{-0.20}^{+0.08}$ from NIRSpec by $\gtrsim$180$\times$. Moreover, the redshift is consistent with that previously determined from a tentative detection ($3.6\sigma$) of CIII]$_{1907,1909}$ ($z=14.178\pm0.013$), solidifying the redshift determination via multiple line detections. We measure a line luminosity of $L_\mathrm{[OIII]88} = (2.1 \pm 0.5)\times10^8\,L_\odot$, placing GS-z14 at the lower end, but within the scatter of, the local $L_\mathrm{[OIII]88}$-star formation rate relation. No dust continuum from GS-z14 is detected, suggesting an upper limit on the dust-to-stellar mass ratio of $< 2 \times 10^{-3}$, consistent with dust production from supernovae with a yield $y_d < 0.3\,M_\odot$. Combining a previous JWST/MIRI photometric measurement of the [OIII]$\lambda\lambda$4959,5007$\mathrm{\mathring{A}}$ and H$\beta$ lines with Cloudy models, we find GS-z14 to be surprisingly metal-enriched ($Z\sim0.05 - 0.2\,Z_\odot$) a mere $300\,\mathrm{Myr}$ after the Big Bang. We present the results of a James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) NIRCam and NIRSpec investigation into the young massive star cluster (YMC) population of NGC 3256, the most cluster-rich luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) in the Great Observatories All Sky LIRG Survey. We detect 3061 compact YMC candidates with a $S/N \geq 3$ at F150W, F200W, and F335M. Based on yggdrasil stellar population models, we identify 116/3061 sources with F150W - F200W $> 0.47$ and F200W - F355M $> -1.37$ colors suggesting they are young (t $\leq 5$ Myr), dusty ($A_{V} = 5 - 15$), and massive ($M_{\odot} > 10^{5}$). This increases the sample of dust-enshrouded YMCs detected in this system by an order of magnitude relative to previous HST studies. With NIRSpec IFU pointings centered on the northern and southern nucleus, we extract the Pa$\alpha$ and 3.3$\mu$m PAH equivalent widths for 8 bright and isolated YMCs. Variations in both the F200W - F335M color and 3.3$\mu$m PAH emission with the Pa$\alpha$ line strength suggest a rapid dust clearing ($< 3 - 4$ Myr) for the emerging YMCs in the nuclei of NGC 3256. Finally, with both the age and dust emission accurately measured we use yggdrasil to derive the color excess (E(B - V)) for all 8 YMCs. We demonstrate that YMCs with strong 3.3$\mu$m PAH emission (F200W - F335M $> 0$) correspond to sources with E(B - V) $> 3$, which are typically missed in UV-optical studies. We use a neural network model and ALMA observations of HCN and HNC to constrain the physical conditions, most notably the cosmic-ray ionization rate (CRIR, zeta), in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) of the starburst galaxy NGC 253. Using output from the chemical code UCLCHEM, we train a neural network model to emulate UCLCHEM and derive HCN and HNC molecular abundances from a given set of physical conditions. We combine the neural network with radiative transfer modeling to generate modeled integrated intensities, which we compare to measurements of HCN and HNC from the ALMA Large Program ALCHEMI. Using a Bayesian nested sampling framework, we constrain the CRIR, molecular gas volume and column densities, kinetic temperature, and beam-filling factor across NGC 253's CMZ. The neural network model successfully recovers UCLCHEM molecular abundances with about 3 percent error and, when used with our Bayesian inference algorithm, increases the parameter inference speed tenfold. We create images of these physical parameters across NGC 253's CMZ at 50 pc resolution and find that the CRIR, in addition to the other gas parameters, is spatially variable with zeta a few times 10^{14} s^{-1} at greater than 100 pc from the nucleus, increasing to zeta greater than 10^{-13} s^{-1} at its center. These inferred CRIRs are consistent within 1 dex with theoretical predictions based on non-thermal emission. Additionally, the high CRIRs estimated in NGC 253's CMZ can be explained by the large number of cosmic-ray-producing sources as well as a potential suppression of cosmic-ray diffusion near their injection sites.

We present a near infrared (NIR) candidate star cluster catalog for the central kiloparsec of M82 based on new JWST NIRCam images. We identify star cluster candidates using the F250M filter, finding 1357 star cluster candidates with stellar masses $>10^4$ M$_\odot$. Compared to previous optical catalogs, nearly all (87%) of the candidates we identify are new. The star cluster candidates have a median intrinsic cluster radius of $\approx$1 pc and have stellar masses up to $10^6$ M$_\odot$. By comparing the color-color diagram to dust-free yggdrasil stellar population models, we estimate that the star cluster candidates have A$_{\rm V}\sim3-24$ mag, corresponding to A$_{\rm 2.5\mu m}\sim0.3-2.1$ mag. There is still appreciable dust extinction towards these clusters into the NIR. We measure the stellar masses of the star cluster candidates, assuming ages of 0 and 8 Myr. The slope of the resulting cluster mass function is $\beta=1.9\pm0.2$, in excellent agreement with studies of star clusters in other galaxies., Comment: Resubmitted to ApJL

We present new multi-frequency ALMA continuum observations of the massive [$\log_{10}(M_\star/M_\odot) = 10.3_{-0.2}^{+0.1}$], UV-luminous [$M_\mathrm{UV} = -21.7 \pm 0.2$] $z=7.31$ galaxy REBELS-25 in Bands 3, 4, 5, and 9. Combining the new observations with previously-taken data in Bands 6 and 8, we cover the dust continuum emission of the galaxy in six distinct bands -- spanning rest-frame $50-350\,\mu$m -- enabling simultaneous constraints on its dust mass ($M_\mathrm{dust}$), temperature ($T_\mathrm{dust}$) and emissivity index ($\beta_\mathrm{IR}$) via modified blackbody fitting. Given a fiducial model of optically thin emission, we infer a cold dust temperature of $T_\mathrm{dust} = 32_{-6}^{+9}\,$K and a high dust mass of $\log_{10}(M_\mathrm{dust}/M_\odot) = 8.2_{-0.4}^{+0.6}$, and moderately optically thick dust does not significantly alter these estimates. If we assume dust production is solely through supernovae (SNe), the inferred dust yield would be high, $y = 0.7_{-0.4}^{+2.3}\,M_\odot$ per SN. Consequently, we argue grain growth in the interstellar medium of REBELS-25 also contributes to its dust build-up. This is supported by the steep dust emissivity index $\beta_\mathrm{IR} = 2.5 \pm 0.4$ we measure for REBELS-25, as well as by its high stellar mass, dense interstellar medium, and metal-rich nature. Our results suggest that constraining the dust emissivity indices of high-redshift galaxies is important not only to mitigate systematic uncertainties in their dust masses and obscured star formation rates, but also to assess if dust properties evolve across cosmic time. Submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) are some of the most extreme star-forming systems in the Universe, whose place in the framework of galaxy evolution is as yet uncertain. It has been hypothesised that SMGs are progenitors of local early-type galaxies, requiring that SMGs generally reside in galaxy cluster progenitors at high redshift. We test this hypothesis and explore SMG environments using a narrowband VLT/HAWK-I+GRAAL study of H$\alpha$ and [OIII] emitters around an unbiased sample of three ALMA-identified and spectroscopically-confirmed SMGs at $z \sim 2.3$ and $z \sim 3.3$, where these SMGs were selected solely on spectroscopic redshift. Comparing with blank-field observations at similar epochs, we find that one of the three SMGs lies in an overdensity of emission-line sources on the $\sim4$ Mpc scale of the HAWK-I field of view, with overdensity parameter $\delta_{g} = 2.6^{+1.4}_{-1.2}$. A second SMG is significantly overdense only on $\lesssim 1.6$ Mpc scales and the final SMG is consistent with residing in a blank field environment. The total masses of the two overdensities are estimated to be $\log(M_{h}/{\rm M}_{\odot}) =$12.1--14.4, leading to present-day masses of $\log(M_{h,z=0}/{\rm M}_{\odot}) =$12.9--15.9. These results imply that SMGs occupy a range of environments, from overdense protoclusters or protogroups to the blank field, suggesting that while some SMGs are strong candidates for the progenitors of massive elliptical galaxies in clusters, this may not be their only possible evolutionary pathway., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures. We present JWST NIRCam imaging targeting 13 $z\sim3$ infrared-luminous ($L_{\rm IR}\sim5\times10^{12}L_{\odot}$) galaxies from the ALESS survey with uniquely deep, high-resolution (0.08$''$$-$0.16$''$) ALMA 870$\mu$m imaging. The 2.0$-$4.4$\mu$m (observed frame) NIRCam imaging reveals the rest-frame near-infrared stellar emission in these submillimeter-selected galaxies (SMGs) at the same (sub-)kpc resolution as the 870$\mu$m dust continuum. The newly revealed stellar morphologies show striking similarities with the dust continuum morphologies at 870$\mu$m, with the centers and position angles agreeing for most sources, clearly illustrating that the spatial offsets reported previously between the 870$\mu$m and HST morphologies were due to strong differential dust obscuration. The F444W sizes are 78$\pm$21% larger than those measured at 870$\mu$m, in contrast to recent results from hydrodynamical simulations that predict larger 870$\mu$m sizes. We report evidence for significant dust obscuration in F444W for the highest-redshift sources, emphasizing the importance of longer-wavelength MIRI imaging. The majority of the sources show evidence that they are undergoing mergers/interactions, including tidal tails/plumes -- some of which are also detected at 870$\mu$m. We find a clear correlation between NIRCam colors and 870$\mu$m surface brightness on $\sim$1 kpc scales, indicating that the galaxies are primarily red due to dust -- not stellar age -- and we show that the dust structure on $\sim$kpc-scales is broadly similar to that in nearby galaxies. Finally, we find no strong stellar bars in the rest-frame near-infrared, suggesting the extended bar-like features seen at 870$\mu$m are highly obscured and/or gas-dominated structures that are likely early precursors to significant bulge growth., Comment: 26 pages, 10 figures. We present Virgil, a MIRI extremely red object (MERO) detected with the F1000W filter as part of the MIRI Deep Imaging Survey (MIDIS) observations of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF). Virgil is a Lyman-$\alpha$ emitter (LAE) at $z_{spec} = 6.6312\pm 0.0019$ (from VLT/MUSE) with a rest-frame UV-to-optical spectral energy distribution (SED) typical of LAEs at similar redshifts. However, MIRI observations reveal an unexpected extremely red color at rest-frame near-infrared wavelengths, $\rm F444W - F1000W = 2.33 \pm 0.06$. Such steep rise in the near-infrared, completely missed without MIRI imaging, is poorly reproduced by models including only stellar populations and hints towards the presence of an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN). Interestingly, the overall SED shape of Virgil resembles that of the recently discovered population of Little Red Dots (LRDs) but does not meet their compactness criterion: at rest-frame UV-optical wavelengths Virgil's morphology follows a 2D-S\'ersic profile with average index $n = 0.93^{+0.85}_{-0.31}$ and $r_e = 0.43$~pkpc. Only at MIRI wavelengths Virgil is unresolved due to the coarser PSF. We also estimate a bolometric luminosity $L_{\rm bol} = (8.4-11.1)\times 10^{44}\rm~erg~s^{-1}$ and a supermassive black hole mass $M_{\rm BH} = (4-7)\times 10^7\rm ~ M_\odot$ in agreement with recently reported values for LRDs. This discovery demonstrates the crucial importance of deep MIRI surveys to find AGN amongst high-$z$ galaxies that otherwise would be completely missed and raises the question of how common Virgil-like objects could be in the early Universe., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables. The blue compact dwarf galaxy I Zw 18 is one of the most metal-poor ($Z \sim 3% Z_{\sun}$) star-forming galaxies in the local Universe. Its evolutionary status has sparked debate within the astronomical community. We aim to investigate the stellar populations of I Zw 18 in the near-IR using JWST/NIRCam's high spatial resolution and sensitivity. Additionally, we aim to derive the galaxy's spatially resolved star formation history (SFH) over the last 1 Gyr and provide constraints for older epochs. We used DOLPHOT to measure positions and fluxes of point sources in the F115W and F200W filters' images of I Zw 18. To derive I Zw 18's SFH, we applied the color-magnitude diagram (CMD) fitting technique SFERA 2.0, using two independent sets of stellar models. Our analysis reveals three main stellar populations: one younger than $\sim30$ Myr, mainly in the northwest star-forming (SF) region; an intermediate-age population ($\sim 100 - 800$ Myr) in the southeast SF region; and a red and faint population linked to the underlying halo, older than 1 Gyr and possibly as old as 13.8 Gyr. The main body of the galaxy shows a very low star formation rate (SFR) of $\sim 10^{-4} M_{\odot} \text{yr}^{-1}$ between 1 and 13.8 Gyr ago. In the last billion years, I Zw 18 shows increasing SF, with strong bursts around $\sim10$ and $\sim100$ Myr ago. Component C mirrors the main body's evolution but with lower SFRs. Our findings confirm that I Zw 18 contains stars of all ages, indicating it is not a young galaxy but has an old stellar halo, similar to other BCDs. The low SF activity over the past billion years supports the "slow cooking" dwarf scenario, explaining its low metal content. We present an analysis of the JWST NIRCam and MIRI morphological properties of 80 massive ($\log_{10}(M_\ast[M_{\odot}])$=11.2$\pm$0.1) dusty star-forming galaxies at $z$$=$2.7$^{+1.2}_{-0.7}$, identified as sub-millimetre galaxies (SMGs) by ALMA, that have been observed as part of the JWST PRIMER project. To compare the structure of these massive, active galaxies to more typical less actively star-forming galaxies, we define two comparison samples. The first of 850 field galaxies matched in specific star-formation rate and redshift and the second of 80 field galaxies matched in stellar mass. We identify 20$\pm$5% of the SMGs as candidate late-stage major mergers, a further 40$\pm$10% as potential minor mergers and 40$\pm$10% which have comparatively undisturbed disk-like morphologies, with no obvious massive neighbours. These rates are comparable to those for the field samples and indicate that the majority of the sub-millimetre-detected galaxies are not late-stage major mergers, but have interaction rates similar to the less-active population at $z$$\sim$2-3. We establish that SMGs have comparable near-infrared sizes to the less active populations, but exhibit lower S\'ersic indices, consistent with bulge-less disks and have more structured morphologies at 2$\mu$m relative to 4$\mu$m. We find evidence for dust reddening as the origin of the morphological differences between the populations, identifying a strong correlation between the F200W$-$F444W pixel colour and the 870$\mu$m surface brightness. We conclude that SMGs and less active galaxies at the same epochs share a common disk-like structure, but the weaker bulge components of the SMGs results in a lower dynamical stability. Consequently, instabilities triggered either secularly or by minor external perturbations result in higher levels of activity (and dust content) in SMGs compared to typical star-forming galaxies. We present high resolution ($\sim0.14$" = 710 pc) ALMA [CII] 158$\mu$m and dust continuum follow-up observations of REBELS-25, a [CII]-luminous ($L_{\mathrm{[CII]}}=(1.7\pm0.2)\times 10^9 \mathrm{L_{\odot}}$) galaxy at redshift $z=7.3065\pm0.0001$. These high resolution, high signal-to-noise observations allow us to study the sub-kpc morphology and kinematics of this massive ($M_* = 8^{+4}_{-2} \times 10^9 \mathrm{M_{\odot}}$) star-forming (SFR$_{\mathrm{UV+IR}} = 199^{+101}_{-63} \mathrm{M_{\odot}} \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$) galaxy in the Epoch of Reionisation. By modelling the kinematics with $^{\mathrm{3D}}$BAROLO, we find it has a low velocity dispersion ($\bar{\sigma} = 33 \pm 9$ km s$^{-1}$) and a high ratio of ordered-to-random motion ($V_{\mathrm{rot, ~max}}/\bar{\sigma} = 11 ^{+8}_{-4}$), indicating that REBELS-25 is a dynamically cold disc. Additionally, we find that the [CII] distribution is well fit by a near-exponential disc model, with a S\'ersic index, $n$, of $1.3 \pm 0.2$, and we see tentative evidence of more complex non-axisymmetric structures suggestive of a bar in the [CII] and dust continuum emission. By comparing to other high spatial resolution cold gas kinematic studies, we find that dynamically cold discs seem to be more common in the high redshift Universe than expected based on prevailing galaxy formation theories, which typically predict more turbulent and dispersion-dominated galaxies in the early Universe as an outcome of merger activity, gas accretion and more intense feedback. This higher degree of rotational support seems instead to be consistent with recent cosmological simulations that have highlighted the contrast between cold and warm ionised gas tracers, particularly for massive galaxies. In this paper we study the filamentary substructure of 3.3 $\mu$m PAH emission from JWST/NIRCam observations in the base of the M82 star-burst driven wind. We identify plume-like substructure within the PAH emission with widths of $\sim$50 pc. Several of the plumes extend to the edge of the field-of-view, and thus are at least 200-300 pc in length. In this region of the outflow, the vast majority ($\sim$70\%) of PAH emission is associated with the plumes. We show that those structures contain smaller scale "clouds" with widths that are $\sim$5-15 pc, and they are morphologically similar to the results of "cloud-crushing" simulations. We estimate the cloud-crushing time-scales of $\sim$0.5-3 Myr, depending on assumptions. We show this time scale is consistent with a picture in which these observed PAH clouds survived break-out from the disk rather than being destroyed by the hot wind. The PAH emission in both the midplane and the outflow is shown to tightly correlate with that of Pa$\alpha$ emission (from HST/NICMOS data), at the scale of both plumes and clouds, though the ratio of PAH-to-Pa$\alpha$ increases at further distances from the midplane. Finally, we show that the outflow PAH emission is suppressed in regions of the M82 wind that are bright in X-ray emission. Overall, our results are broadly consistent with a picture in which cold gas in galactic outflows is launched via hierarchically structured plumes, and those small scale clouds are more likely to survive the wind environment when collected into the larger plume structure., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS

The physical properties of galactic molecular outflows are important as they could constrain outflow formation mechanisms. We study the properties of the southwest (SW) outflow streamer including gas kinematics, optical depth, dense gas fraction, and shock strength in the central molecular zone of the starburst galaxy NGC 253. We image the molecular emission at a spatial resolution of $\sim$27 pc based on data from the ALCHEMI program. We trace the kinematics of molecular gas with CO(1-0) line. We constrain the optical depth of CO emission with CO/$^{13}$CO(1-0) ratio, the dense gas fraction with HCN/CO(1-0) ratio, as well as the shock strength with SiO(2-1)/$^{13}$CO(1-0) ratio. The CO/$^{13}$CO(1-0) integrated intensity ratio is $\sim$21 in the SW streamer region, which approximates the C/$^{13}$C isotopic abundance ratio. The higher integrated intensity ratio compared to the disk can be attributed to the optically thinner environment for CO(1-0) emission inside the SW streamer. The HCN/CO(1-0) and SiO(2-1)/$^{13}$CO(1-0) integrated intensity ratios both approach $\sim$0.2 in three giant molecular clouds (GMCs) at the base of the outflow streamers, which implies the higher dense gas fraction and enhanced strength of fast shocks in those GMCs than in the disk. The contours of those two integrated intensity ratios are extended towards the directions of outflow streamers, which connects the enhanced dense gas fraction and shock strength with molecular outflow. Moreover, the molecular gas with enhanced dense gas fraction and shock strength located at the base of the SW streamer shares the same velocity with the outflow. These phenomena suggest that the star formation inside the GMCs can trigger the shocks and further drive the molecular outflow., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 14 pages, 11 figures

We present James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Integral Field Spectrograph observations of NGC 3256, a local infrared-luminous late-stage merging system with two nuclei about 1 kpc apart, both of which have evidence of cold molecular outflows. Using JWST NIRSpec and MIRI datasets, we investigate this morphologically complex system on spatial scales of $<$100 pc, where we focus on the warm molecular H$_2$ gas surrounding the nuclei. We detect collimated outflowing warm H$_2$ gas originating from the southern nucleus, though we do not find significant outflowing warm H$_2$ gas surrounding the northern nucleus. Within the observed region, the maximum intrinsic velocities of the outflow reach up to $\sim$1,000 km s$^{-1}$, and extend out to a distance of 0.7 kpc. Based on H$_2$ S(7)/S(1) line ratios, we find a larger fraction of warmer gas near the S nucleus, which decreases with increasing distance from the nucleus, signifying the S nucleus as a primary source of H$_2$ heating. The gas mass of the warm H$_2$ outflow component is estimated to be $M\rm{_{warm,out}}$ = 8.9$\times$10$^5\;M_{\odot}$, as much as 4$\%$ of the cold H$_2$ mass as estimated using ALMA CO data. The outflow time scale is about $7\times10^5$ yr, resulting in a mass outflow rate of $\dot{M}\rm{_{warm,out}}$ = 1.3 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ and kinetic power of $P\rm{_{warm,out}}\;\sim\;2\times10^{41}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Lastly, the regions where the outflowing gas reside show high [FeII]/Pa$\beta$ and H$_2$/Br$\gamma$ line ratios, indicating enhanced mechanical heating caused by the outflows. At the same time, the 3.3 $\mu$m and 6.2 $\mu$m Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon fluxes in these regions are not significantly suppressed compared to those outside the outflows, suggesting the outflows have no clear negative feedback effect on the local star formation., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures. We present a JWST imaging survey of I Zw 18, the archetypal extremely metal-poor, star-forming (SF), blue compact dwarf galaxy. With an oxygen abundance of only $\sim$3% $Z_{\odot}$, it is among the lowest-metallicity systems known in the local Universe, and is, therefore, an excellent accessible analog for the galactic building blocks which existed at early epochs of ionization and star formation. These JWST data provide a comprehensive infrared (IR) view of I Zw 18 with eight filters utilizing both Near Infrared Camera (F115W, F200W, F356W, and F444W) and Mid-Infrared Instrument (F770W, F1000W, F1500W, and F1800W) photometry, which we have used to identify key stellar populations that are bright in the near- and mid-IR. These data allow for a better understanding of the origins of dust and dust-production mechanisms in metal-poor environments by characterizing the population of massive, evolved stars in the red supergiant (RSG) and asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phases. In addition, it enables the identification of the brightest dust-enshrouded young stellar objects (YSOs), which provide insight into the formation of massive stars at extremely low metallicities typical of the very early Universe. This paper provides an overview of the observational strategy and data processing, and presents first science results, including identifications of dusty AGB, RSG, and bright YSO candidates. We report the discovery of Cerberus, an extremely red object detected with the MIRI Deep Imaging Survey (MIDIS) observations in the F1000W filter of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. The object is detected at $S/N\sim6$, with $\mathrm{F1000W}\sim27$ mag, and undetected in the NIRCam data gathered by the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey, JADES, fainter than the 30.0-30.5 mag $5\sigma$ detection limits in individual bands, as well as in the MIDIS F560W ultra-deep data ($\sim$29 mag, $5\sigma$). Analyzing the spectral energy distribution built with low-$S/N$ ($<5$) measurements in individual optical-to-mid-infrared filters and higher $S/N$ ($\gtrsim5$) in stacked NIRCam data, we discuss the possible nature of this red NIRCam-dark source using a battery of codes. We discard the possibility of Cerberus being a Solar System body based on the $<0.016$" proper motion in the 1-year apart JADES and MIDIS observations. A sub-stellar Galactic nature is deemed unlikely, given that the Cerberus' relatively flat NIRCam-to-NIRCam and very red NIRCam-to-MIRI flux ratios are not consistent with any brown dwarf model. The extragalactic nature of Cerberus offers 3 possibilities: (1) A $z\sim0.4$ galaxy with strong emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons; the very low inferred stellar mass, $\mathrm{M}_\star=10^{5-6}$ M$_\odot$, makes this possibility highly improbable. (2) A dusty galaxy at $z\sim4$ with an inferred stellar mass $\mathrm{M}_\star\sim10^{8}$ M$_\odot$. (3) A galaxy with observational properties similar to those of the reddest little red dots discovered around $z\sim7$, but Cerberus lying at $z\sim15$, with the rest-frame optical dominated by emission from a dusty torus or a dusty starburst., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL, results unchanged, manuscript shortened to publish as a letter

We present new observations of the central 1 kpc of the M 82 starburst obtained with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) near-infrared camera (NIRCam) instrument at a resolution ~0.05"-0.1" (~1-2 pc). The data comprises images in three mostly continuum filters (F140M, F250M, and F360M), and filters that contain [FeII] (F164N), H2 v=1-0 (F212N), and the 3.3 um PAH feature (F335M). We find prominent plumes of PAH emission extending outward from the central starburst region, together with a network of complex filamentary substructure and edge-brightened bubble-like features. The structure of the PAH emission closely resembles that of the ionized gas, as revealed in Paschen alpha and free-free radio emission. We discuss the origin of the structure, and suggest the PAHs are embedded in a combination of neutral, molecular, and photoionized gas., Comment: Submitted to The Astrophysical Journal

Molecular lines are powerful diagnostics of the physical and chemical properties of the interstellar medium (ISM). These ISM properties, which affect future star formation, are expected to differ in starburst galaxies from those of more quiescent galaxies. We investigate the ISM properties in the central molecular zone of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253 using the ultra-wide millimeter spectral scan survey from the ALMA Large Program ALCHEMI. We present an atlas of velocity-integrated images at a 1".6 resolution of 148 unblended transitions from 44 species, including the first extragalactic detection of HCNH$^+$ and the first interferometric images of C$_3$H$^+$, NO, HCS$^+$. We conduct a principal component analysis (PCA) on these images to extract correlated chemical species and to identify key groups of diagnostic transitions. To the best of our knowledge, our dataset is currently the largest astronomical set of molecular lines to which PCA has been applied. The PCA can categorize transitions coming from different physical components in NGC 253 such as i) young starburst tracers characterized by high-excitation transitions of HC$_3$N and complex organic molecules (COMs) versus tracers of on-going star formation (radio recombination lines) and high-excitation transitions of CCH and CN tracing PDRs, ii) tracers of cloud-collision-induced shocks (low-excitation transitions of CH$_3$OH, HNCO, HOCO$^+$, and OCS) versus shocks from star-formation-induced outflows (high-excitation transitions of SiO), as well as iii) outflows showing emission from HOC$^+$, CCH, H$_3$O$^+$, CO isotopologues, HCN, HCO$^+$, CS, and CN. The enormous increase in mid-IR sensitivity and spatial and spectral resolution provided by the JWST spectrographs enables, for the first time, detailed extragalactic studies of molecular vibrational bands. This opens an entirely new window for the study of the molecular interstellar medium in luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs). We present a detailed analysis of rovibrational bands of gas-phase CO, H$_2$O, C$_2$H$_2$ and HCN towards the heavily-obscured eastern nucleus of the LIRG VV 114, as observed by NIRSpec and MIRI MRS. Spectra extracted from apertures of 130 pc in radius show a clear dichotomy between the obscured AGN and two intense starburst regions. We detect the 2.3 $\mu$m CO bandheads, characteristic of cool stellar atmospheres, in the star-forming regions, but not towards the AGN. Surprisingly, at 4.7 $\mathrm{\mu}$m we find highly-excited CO ($T_\mathrm{ex} \approx 700-800$ K out to at least rotational level $J = 27$) towards the star-forming regions, but only cooler gas ($T_\mathrm{ex} \approx 200$ K) towards the AGN. We conclude that only mid-infrared pumping through the rovibrational lines can account for the equilibrium conditions found for CO and H$_2$O in the deeply-embedded starbursts. Here the CO bands probe regions with an intense local radiation field inside dusty young massive star clusters or near the most massive young stars. The lack of high-excitation molecular gas towards the AGN is attributed to geometric dilution of the intense radiation from the bright point source. ALMA observations revealed the presence of significant amounts of dust in the first Gyr of Cosmic time. However, the metal and dust buildup picture remains very uncertain due to the lack of constraints on metallicity. JWST has started to reveal the metal content of high-redshift targets, which may lead to firmer constraints on high-redshift dusty galaxies evolution. In this work, we use detailed chemical and dust evolution models to explore the evolution of galaxies within the ALMA REBELS survey, testing different metallicity scenarios that could be inferred from JWST observations. In the models, we track the buildup of stellar mass by using non-parametric SFHs for REBELS galaxies. Different scenarios for metal and dust evolution are simulated by allowing different prescriptions for gas flows and dust processes. The model outputs are compared with measured dust scaling relations, by employing metallicity-dependent calibrations for the gas mass based on the [CII]158micron line. Independently of the galaxies metal content, we found no need for extreme dust prescriptions to explain the dust masses revealed by ALMA. However, different levels of metal enrichment will lead to different dominant dust production mechanisms, with stardust production dominant over other ISM dust processes only in the metal-poor case. This points out how metallicity measurements from JWST will significantly improve our understanding of the dust buildup in high-redshift galaxies. We investigate the properties of strong (Hb+[OIII]) emitters before and after the end of the Epoch of Reionization from z=8 to z=5.5. We make use of ultra-deep JWST/NIRCam imaging in the Parallel Field of the MIRI Deep Imaging Survey (MIDIS) in the Hubble eXtreme Deep Field (P2-XDF), in order to select prominent (Hb+[OIII]) emitters (with rest EW_0 > 100 Angstroms) at z=5.5-7, based on their flux density enhancement in the F356W band with respect to the spectral energy distribution continuum. We complement our selection with other (Hb+[OIII]) emitters from the literature at similar and higher (z=7-8) redshifts. We find (non-independent) anti-correlations between EW_0(Hb+[OIII]) and both galaxy stellar mass and age, in agreement with previous studies, and a positive correlation with specific star formation rate (sSFR). On the SFR-M* plane, the (Hb+[OIII]) emitters populate both the star-formation main sequence and the starburst region, which become indistinguishable at low stellar masses (log10(M*) < 7.5). We find tentative evidence for a non-monotonic relation between EW_0(Hb+[OIII]) and SFR, such that both parameters correlate with each other at SFR > 1 Msun/yr, while the correlation flattens out at lower SFRs. This suggests that low metallicities producing high EW_0(Hb+[OIII]) could be important at low SFR values. Interestingly, the properties of the strong emitters and other galaxies (33% and 67% of our z=5.5-7 sample, respectively) are similar, including, in many cases, high sSFR. Therefore, it is crucial to consider both emitters and non-emitters to obtain a complete picture of the cosmic star formation activity around the Epoch of Reionization., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures. We present a spatially-resolved excitation analysis for the central molecular zone (CMZ) of the starburst galaxy NGC 253 using the data from the ALMA Large program ALCHEMI, whereby we explore parameters distinguishing NGC 253 from the quiescent Milky Way's Galactic Center (GC). Non-LTE analyses employing a hierarchical Bayesian framework are applied to Band 3-7 transitions from nine molecular species to delineate the position-position-velocity distributions of column density ($N_\mathrm{H_2}$), volume density ($n_\mathrm{H_2}$), and temperature ($T_\mathrm{kin}$) at 27 pc resolution. Two distinct components are detected: a low-density component with $(n_\mathrm{H_2},\ T_\mathrm{kin})\sim(10^{3.3}\ \mathrm{cm}^{-3}, 85 K)$ and a high-density component with $(n_\mathrm{H_2},\ T_\mathrm{kin})\sim (10^{4.4}\ \mathrm{cm}^{-3}, 110\ \mathrm{K})$, separated at $n_\mathrm{H_2}\sim10^{3.8}\ \mathrm{cm}^{-3}$. NGC 253 has $\sim10$ times the high-density gas mass and $\sim3$ times the dense-gas mass fraction of the GC. These properties are consistent with their HCN/CO ratio but cannot alone explain the factor of $\sim30$ difference in their star formation efficiencies (SFEs), contradicting the dense-gas mass to star formation rate scaling law. The $n_\mathrm{H_2}$ histogram toward NGC 253 exhibits a shallow declining slope up to $n_\mathrm{H_2}\sim10^6\ \mathrm{cm}^{-3}$, while that of the GC steeply drops in $n_\mathrm{H_2}\gtrsim10^{4.5}\ \mathrm{cm}^{-3}$ and vanishes at $10^5\ \mathrm{cm}^{-3}$. Their dense-gas mass fraction ratio becomes consistent with their SFEs when the threshold $n_\mathrm{H_2}$ for the dense gas is taken at $\sim 10^{4.2\mbox{-}4.6}\ \mathrm{cm}^{-3}$. The rich abundance of gas above this density range in the NGC 253 CMZ, or its scarcity in the GC, is likely to be the critical difference characterizing the contrasting star formation in the centers of the two galaxies., Comment: 49 pages, 27 figures, 7 tables, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We have carried out HST snapshot observations at 1.1 $\mu$m of 281 candidate strongly lensed galaxies identified in the wide-area extragalactic surveys conducted with the Herschel space observatory. Our candidates comprise systems with flux densities at $500\,\mu$m$ S_{500}\geq 80$ mJy. We model and subtract the surface brightness distribution for 130 systems, where we identify a candidate for the foreground lens candidate. After combining visual inspection, archival high-resolution observations, and lens subtraction, we divide the systems into different classes according to their lensing likelihood. We confirm 65 systems to be lensed. Of these, 30 are new discoveries. We successfully perform lens modelling and source reconstruction on 23 systems, where the foreground lenses are isolated galaxies and the background sources are detected in the HST images. All the systems are successfully modelled as a singular isothermal ellipsoid. The Einstein radii of the lenses and the magnifications of the background sources are consistent with previous studies. However, the background source circularised radii (between 0.34 kpc and 1.30 kpc) are $\sim$3 times smaller than the ones measured in the sub-mm/mm for a similarly selected and partially overlapping sample. We compare our lenses with those in the SLACS survey, confirming that our lens-independent selection is more effective at picking up fainter and diffuse galaxies and group lenses. We study the stellar population properties of 182 spectroscopically-confirmed (MUSE/VLT) Lyman-$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) and 450 photometrically-selected Lyman-Break galaxies (LBGs) at z = 2.8 - 6.7 in the Hubble eXtreme Deep Field (XDF). Leveraging the combined power of HST and JWST NIRCam and MIRI observations, we analyse their rest-frame UV-through-near-IR spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with MIRI playing a crucial role in robustly assessing the LAE's stellar mass and ages. Our LAEs are low-mass objects (log$_{10}$(M$_\star$[M$_\odot$]) ~ 7.5), with little or no dust extinction (E(B - V) ~ 0.1) and a blue UV continuum slope ($\beta$ ~ -2.2). While 75% of our LAEs are young (< 100 Myr), the remaining 25% have significantly older stellar populations (> 100 Myr). These old LAEs are statistically more massive, less extinct and have lower specific star formation rate (sSFR) compared to young LAEs. Besides, they populate the M$_\star$ - SFR plane along the main-sequence (MS) of star-forming galaxies, while young LAEs populate the starburst region. The comparison between the LAEs properties to those of a stellar-mass matched sample of LBGs shows no statistical difference between these objects, except for the LBGs redder UV continuum slope and marginally larger E(B - V) values. Interestingly, 48% of the LBGs have ages < 10 Myr and are classified as starbursts, but lack detectable Ly$\alpha$ emission. This is likely due to HI resonant scattering and/or selective dust extinction. We present deep James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)/MIRI F560W observations of a flux-limited, ALMA-selected sample of 28 galaxies at z=0.5-3.6 in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF). The data from the MIRI Deep Imaging Survey (MIDIS) reveal the stellar structure of the HUDF galaxies at rest-wavelengths of >1 micron for the first time. We revise the stellar mass estimates using new JWST photometry and find good agreement with pre-JWST analysis; the few discrepancies can be explained by blending issues in the earlier lower-resolution Spitzer data. At z~2.5, the resolved rest-frame near-infrared (1.6 micron) structure of the galaxies is significantly more smooth and centrally concentrated than seen by HST at rest-frame 450 nm (F160W), with effective radii of Re(F560W)=1-5 kpc and S\'ersic indices mostly close to an exponential (disk-like) profile (n~1), up to n~5 (excluding AGN). We find an average size ratio of Re(F560W)/Re(F160W)~0.7 that decreases with stellar mass. The stellar structure of the ALMA-selected galaxies is indistinguishable from a HUDF reference sample of galaxies with comparable MIRI flux density. We supplement our analysis with custom-made, position-dependent, empirical PSF models for the F560W observations. The results imply that a smoother stellar structure is in place in massive gas-rich, star-forming galaxies at Cosmic Noon, despite a more clumpy rest-frame optical appearance, placing additional constraints on galaxy formation simulations. Understanding the nature of high-$z$ dusty galaxies requires a comprehensive view of their ISM and molecular complexity. However, the molecular ISM at high-$z$ is commonly studied using only a few species beyond CO, limiting our understanding. In this paper, we present the results of deep 3 mm spectral line surveys using the NOEMA targeting two lensed dusty galaxies: APM 08279+5255 (APM), a quasar at redshift $z=3.911$, and NCv1.143 (NC), a $z=3.565$ starburst galaxy. The spectral line surveys cover rest-frame frequencies from about 330-550 GHz. We report the detection of 38 and 25 emission lines in APM and NC, respectively. The spectra reveal the chemical richness and the complexity of the physical properties of the ISM. By comparing the spectra of the two sources and combining the gas excitation analysis, we find that the physical properties and the chemical imprints of the ISM are different between them: the molecular gas is more excited in APM, exhibiting higher molecular-gas temperatures and densities compared to NC; the chemical abundances in APM are akin to the values of local AGN, showing boosted relative abundances of the dense gas tracers that might be related to high-temperature chemistry and/or XDRs, while NC more closely resembles local starburst galaxies. The most significant differences are found in H2O, where the 448GHz H2O line is significantly brighter in APM, likely linked to the intense far-infrared radiation from the dust powered by AGN. Our astrochemical model suggests that at such high column densities, FUV radiation is less important in regulating the ISM, while CRs (X-rays/shocks) are the key players in shaping the abundance of the molecules and the initial conditions of star formation. Such deep spectral line surveys open a new window to study the physical and chemical properties of the ISM and the radiation field of galaxies in the early Universe. We present new JWST-NIRSpec IFS data for the luminous infrared galaxy NGC7469: a nearby (70.6Mpc) active galaxy with a Sy 1.5 nucleus that drives a highly ionized gas outflow and a prominent nuclear star-forming ring. Using the superb sensitivity and high spatial resolution of the JWST instrument NIRSpec-IFS, we investigate the role of the Seyfert nucleus in the excitation and dynamics of the circumnuclear gas. Our analysis focuses on the [Fe ii], H2, and hydrogen recombination lines that trace the radiation/shocked-excited molecular and ionized ISM around the AGN. We investigate the gas excitation through H2/Br{\gamma} and [Fe ii]/Pa\b{eta} emission line ratios and find that photoionization by the AGN dominates within the central 300 pc of the galaxy and together with a small region show ing signatures of shock-heated gas; these shock-heated regions are likely associated with a compact radio jet. In addition, the velocity field and velocity dispersion maps reveal complex gas kinematics. Rotation is the dominant feature, but we also identify non-circular motions consistent with gas inflows as traced by the velocity residuals and the spiral pattern in the Pa{\alpha} velocity dispersion map. The inflow is consistent with the mass outflow rate and two orders of magnitude higher than the AGN accretion rate. The compact nuclear radio jet has enough power to drive the highly ionized outflow. This scenario suggests that the inflow and outflow are in a self-regulating feeding-feedback process, with a contribution from the radio jet helping to drive the outflow., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) integral-field spectroscopy of the nearby luminous infrared galaxy, NGC 7469. We take advantage of the high spatial/spectral resolution and wavelength coverage of JWST /NIRSpec to study the 3.3 um neutral polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) grain emission on ~60 pc scales. We find a clear change in the average grain properties between the star-forming ring and the central AGN. Regions in the vicinity of the AGN, with [NeIII]/[NeII]>0.25, tend to have larger grain sizes and lower aliphatic-to-aromatic (3.4/3.3) ratios indicating that smaller grains are preferentially removed by photo-destruction in the vicinity of the AGN. We find an overall suppression of the total PAH emission relative to the ionized gas in the central 1 kpc region of the AGN in NGC 7469 compared to what has been observed with Spitzer on 3 kpc scales. However, the fractional 3.3 um to total PAH power is enhanced in the starburst ring, possibly due to a variety of physical effects on sub-kpc scales, including recurrent fluorescence of small grains or multiple photon absorption by large grains. Finally, the IFU data show that while the 3.3 um PAH-derived star formation rate (SFR) in the ring is 8% higher than that inferred from the [NeII] and [NeIII] emission lines, the integrated SFR derived from the 3.3 um feature would be underestimated by a factor of two due to the deficit of PAHs around the AGN, as might occur if a composite system like NGC 7469 were to be observed at high-redshift., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables, Submitted to ApJL

We present a JWST/MRS spectrum of the quasar J1120+0641 at z=7.0848, the first spectroscopic observation of a reionisation-era quasar in the rest-frame infrared ($0.6<\lambda<3.4\mu$m). In the context of the mysterious fast assembly of the first supermassive black holes at z>7, our observations enable for the first time the detection of hot torus dust, the H$\alpha$ emission line, and the Paschen-series broad emission lines in a quasar at z>7. Hot torus dust is clearly detected as an upturn in the continuum emission at $\lambda_{\text{rest}}\simeq1.3\mu$m, leading to a black-body temperature of $T=1413.5^{+5.7}_{-7.4}$K. Compared to similarly-luminous quasars at 06 ($2\sigma$ significance). We measure the black hole mass of J1120+0641 based on the H$\alpha$ Balmer line, $M_{\text{BH}}=1.52\pm0.17\cdot 10^9 M_\odot$, which is in good agreement with the previous rest-UV MgII black hole mass measurement. The black hole mass based on the Paschen-series lines is also consistent, indicating no significant extinction in the rest-frame UV measurement. The broad H$\alpha$, Pa-$\alpha$ and Pa-$\beta$ emission lines are consistent with an origin in a common broad-line region (BLR) with density log$N_H/\text{cm}^{-3}\geq 12$, ionisation parameter $-7<$log$U<-4$, and extinction E(B-V)$\lesssim 0.1$mag. These BLR parameters are consistent with similarly-bright quasars at 0

OH+ absorption is a powerful tracer of inflowing and outflowing gas in the predominantly atomic diffuse and turbulent halo surrounding galaxies. In this letter, we present observations of OH+(1_1-1_0), CO(9-8) and the underlying dust continuum in 5 strongly lensed z~2-4 QSOs, using ALMA to detect outflowing neutral gas. Blue-shifted OH+ absorption is detected in 3/5 QSOs and tentatively detected in a 4th. Absorption at systemic velocities is also detected in one. OH+ emission is observed in 3/5 QSOs at systemic velocities and CO(9-8) is detected in all 5 QSOs at high S/N, providing information on the dense molecular gas within the host galaxy. We compare our sample to high-z far-infrared (FIR) luminous star-forming and active galaxies from the literature. We find no difference in OH+ absorption line properties between active and star-forming galaxies with both samples following the same optical depth-dust temperature relation, suggesting that these observables are driven by the same mechanism in both samples. Similarly, star-forming and active galaxies both follow the same OH+ emission-FIR relation. Obscured QSOs display broader (>800 km/s) emission than the unobscured QSOs and all but one of the high-z star-forming galaxies, likely caused by the warm molecular gas reservoir obscuring the accreting nucleus. Broader CO(9-8) emission (>500 km/s) is found in obscured versus unobscured QSOs, but overall cover a similar range in line widths as the star-forming galaxies and follow the CO(9-8)-FIR luminosity relation found in low-z galaxies. We find that outflows traced by OH+ are only detected in extreme star-forming galaxies (broad CO emission) and in both types of QSOs, which, in turn, display no red-shifted absorption. This suggests that diffuse neutral outflows in galaxy halos may be associated with the most energetic evolutionary phases leading up to and following the obscured QSO phase., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, 4 tables, accepted to A&A letters

We present initial results of an ongoing survey with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array targeting the CO($J$ = 1-0) transition in a sample of 30 submillimeter-selected, dusty star-forming galaxies at $z =$ 2-5 with existing mid--$J$ CO detections from ALMA and NOEMA, of which 17 have been fully observed. We detect CO(1-0) emission in 11 targets, along with three tentative ($\sim$1.5-2$\sigma$) detections; three galaxies are undetected. Our results yield total molecular gas masses of 6-23$\times$10$^{10}$ ($\alpha_\mathrm{CO}$/1) M$_\odot$, with gas mass fractions, $f_\mathrm{gas}$=$M_\mathrm{mol}$/($M_*$+$M_\mathrm{mol}$), of 0.1-0.8 and a median depletion time of (140$\pm$70) Myr. We find median CO excitation ratios of $r_{31}$ = 0.75$\pm$0.39 and $r_{41}$ = 0.63$\pm$0.44, with a significant scatter. We find no significant correlation between the excitation ratio and a number of key parameters such as redshift, CO(1-0) line width or $\Sigma_\mathrm{SFR}$. We only find a tentative positive correlation between $r_{41}$ and the star-forming efficiency, but we are limited by our small sample size. Finally, we compare our results to predictions from the SHARK semi-analytical model, finding a good agreement between the molecular gas masses, depletion times and gas fractions of our sources and their SHARK counterparts. Our results highlight the heterogeneous nature of the most massive star-forming galaxies at high-redshift, and the importance of CO(1--0) observations to robustly constrain their total molecular gas content and ISM properties., Comment: 10 pages, 15 figures. We present the ultraviolet luminosity function and an estimate of the cosmic star formation rate density at $88$ galaxy candidates based on their dropout nature in the F115W and/or F150W filters, a high probability for their photometric redshifts, estimated with three different codes, being at $z>8$, good fits based on $\chi^2$ calculations, and predominant solutions compared to $z<8$ alternatives. We find mild evolution in the luminosity function from $z\sim13$ to $z\sim8$, i.e., only a small increase in the average number density of $\sim$0.2 dex, while the faint-end slope and absolute magnitude of the knee remain approximately constant, with values $\alpha=-2.2\pm0.1$ and $M^*=-20.8\pm0.2$ mag. Comparing our results with the predictions of state-of-the-art galaxy evolution models, we find two main results: (1) a slower increase with time in the cosmic star formation rate density compared to a steeper rise predicted by models; (2) nearly a factor of 10 higher star formation activity concentrated in scales around 2 kpc in galaxies with stellar masses $\sim10^8$ M$_\odot$ during the first 350 Myr of the Universe, $z\sim12$, with models matching better the luminosity density observational estimations $\sim$150 Myr later, by $z\sim9$., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL, in memoriam Hans Ulrik Noorgaard-Nielsen and Olivier Le F\`evre

We present new ALMA Band 8 (rest-frame $90\,\mu$m) observations of three massive ($M_\star \approx 10^{10}\,M_\odot$) galaxies at $z\approx7$ previously detected in [CII]$158\,\mu$m and underlying dust continuum emission in the Reionization Era Bright Emission Line Survey (REBELS). We detect the dust continuum emission of two of our targets in Band 8 (REBELS-25 and REBELS-38), while REBELS-12 remains undetected. Through modified blackbody fitting we determine cold dust temperatures ($T_\mathrm{dust} \approx 30 - 35\,$K) in both of the dual-band detected targets, given a fiducial model of optically thin emission with $\beta = 2.0$. Their dust temperatures are lower than most $z\sim7$ galaxies in the literature, and consequently their dust masses are higher ($M_\mathrm{dust} \approx 10^{8}\,M_\odot$). Nevertheless, these large dust masses are still consistent with predictions from models of dust production in the early Universe. In addition, we target and detect [OIII]$88\,\mu$m emission in both REBELS-12 and REBELS-25, and find $L_\mathrm{[OIII]} / L_\mathrm{[CII]}$ ratios of approximately unity, low compared to the $L_\mathrm{[OIII]} / L_\mathrm{[CII]} \gtrsim 2 - 10$ observed in the known $z\gtrsim6$ population thus far. We argue the lower line ratios are due to a comparatively weaker ionizing radiation field resulting from the less starbursty nature of our targets. This low burstiness supports the cold dust temperatures and below average $\mathrm{[OIII]}\lambda\lambda4959,5007 + \mathrm{H}\beta$ equivalent widths of REBELS-25 and REBELS-38, compared to the known high-redshift population. Overall, this provides evidence for the existence of a massive, dust-rich galaxy population at $z\approx7$ which has previously experienced vigorous star formation, but is currently forming stars in a steady, as opposed to bursty, manner., Comment: 18 pages + appendices; 8 figures in main text; Submitted to MNRAS on 27 Dec 2022

Feedback and outflows in galaxies that are associated with a quasar phase are expected to be pivotal in quenching the most massive galaxies. However, observations targeting the molecular outflow phase, which dominates both the mass and momentum and removes the immediate fuel for star formation, are limited in high-z QSO hosts. Massive quiescent galaxies found at z ~ 4 are predicted to have already quenched star formation by z ~ 5 and undergone their most intense growth at z > 6. Here, we present two ALMA detections of molecular outflows, traced by blue-shifted absorption of the OH 119 micron doublet, from a sample of three z > 6 infrared luminous QSO hosts: J2310+1855 and P183+05. OH 119 micron is also detected in emission in P183+05, and tentatively in the third source: P036+03. Using similar assumptions as for high-z Dusty Star-Forming Galaxy outflows, we find that our QSOs drive molecular outflows with comparable mass outflow rates, and that are comparably energetic except for J2310+1855's significantly lower outflow energy flux. We do not find evidence, nor require additional input from the central AGN to drive the molecular outflow in J2310+1855 but can not rule out an AGN contribution in P183+05 if a significant AGN contribution to L_FIR is assumed and/or if the outflow covering fraction is high (> 53%), which evidence from the literature suggests is unlikely in these sources. We present the results of a {\it James Webb Space Telescope} NIRCam investigation into the young massive star cluster (YMC) population in the luminous infrared galaxy VV 114. We identify 374 compact YMC candidates with a $S/N \geq 3$, 5, and 5 at F150W, F200W, and F356W respectively. A direct comparison with our {\it HST} cluster catalog reveals that $\sim 20\%$ of these sources are undetected at optical wavelengths. Based on {\it yggdrasil} stellar population models, we identify 17 YMC candidates in our {\it JWST} imaging alone with F150W-F200W and F200W-F356W colors suggesting they are all very young, dusty ($A_{V} = 5 - 15$), and massive ($10^{5.8} < M_{\odot} < 10^{6.1}$). The discovery of these `hidden' sources, many of which are found in the `overlap' region between the two nuclei, quadruples the number of $t < 3$ Myr clusters, and nearly doubles the number of $t < 6$ Myr clusters detected in VV 114. Now extending the cluster age distribution ($dN/d\tau \propto \tau^{\gamma}$) to the youngest ages, we find a slope of $\gamma = -1.30 \pm 0.39$ for $10^{6} < \tau (\mathrm{yr}) < 10^{7}$, which is consistent with the previously determined value from $10^{7} < \tau (\mathrm{yr}) < 10^{8.5}$, and confirms that VV 114 has a steep age distribution slope for all massive star clusters across the entire range of cluster ages observed. Finally, the consistency between our {\it JWST}- and {\it HST}-derived age distribution slopes indicates that the balance between cluster formation and destruction has not been significantly altered in VV 114 over the last 0.5 Gyr., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, published in the Astrophysical Journal

We present James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI) integral-field spectroscopy of the nearby merging, luminous infrared galaxy, NGC 7469. This galaxy hosts a Seyfert type-1.5 nucleus, a highly ionized outflow, and a bright, circumnuclear star-forming ring, making it an ideal target to study AGN feedback in the local Universe. We take advantage of the high spatial/spectral resolution of JWST/MIRI to isolate the star-forming regions surrounding the central active nucleus and study the properties of the dust and warm molecular gas on ~100 pc scales. The starburst ring exhibits prominent Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emission, with grain sizes and ionization states varying by only ~30%, and a total star formation rate of $\rm 10 - 30 \ M_\odot$/yr derived from fine structure and recombination emission lines. Using pure rotational lines of H2, we detect 1.2$\times$10$^{7} \rm \ M_\odot$ of warm molecular gas at a temperature higher than 200 K in the ring. All PAH bands get significantly weaker towards the central source, where larger and possibly more ionized grains dominate the emission. However, the bulk of the dust and molecular gas in the ring appears unaffected by the ionizing radiation or the outflowing wind from the AGN. We present James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) imaging of NGC 7469 with the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and the Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI). NGC 7469 is a nearby, $z=0.01627$, luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) that hosts both a Seyfert Type-1.5 nucleus and a circumnuclear starburst ring with a radius of $\sim$0.5 kpc. The new near-infrared (NIR) JWST imaging reveals 66 star-forming regions, 37 of which were not detected by HST observations. Twenty-eight of the 37 sources have very red NIR colors that indicate obscurations up to A$_{\rm{v}}\sim7$ and a contribution of at least 25$\%$ from hot dust emission to the 4.4$\mu$m band. Their NIR colors are also consistent with young ($<$5 Myr) stellar populations and more than half of them are coincident with the MIR emission peaks. These younger, dusty star-forming regions account for $\sim$6$\%$ and $\sim$17$\%$ of the total 1.5$\mu$m and 4.4$\mu$m luminosity of the starburst ring, respectively. Thanks to JWST, we find a significant number of young dusty sources that were previously unseen due to dust extinction. The newly identified 28 young sources are a significant increase compared to the number of HST-detected young sources (4-5). This makes the total percentage of the young population rise from $\sim$15$\%$ to 48$\%$. The nearby, luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) NGC 7469 hosts a Seyfert nucleus with a circumnuclear star-forming ring and is thus the ideal local laboratory for investigating the starburst--AGN connection in detail. We present integral-field observations of the central 1.3 kpc region in NGC 7469 obtained with the JWST Mid-InfraRed Instrument. Molecular and ionized gas distributions and kinematics at a resolution of {\sim}100 pc over the 4.9 - 7.6{\mu}m region are examined to study gas dynamics influenced by the central AGN. The low-ionization [Fe II] {\lambda}5.34{\mu}m and [Ar II] {\lambda}6.99{\mu}m lines are bright on the nucleus and in the starburst ring, as opposed to H2 S(5) {\lambda}6.91{\mu}m which is strongly peaked at the center and surrounding ISM. The high-ionization [Mg V] line is resolved and shows a broad, blueshifted component associated with the outflow. It has a nearly face-on geometry that is strongly peaked on the nucleus, where it reaches a maximum velocity of -650 km/s, and extends about 400 pc to the East. Regions of enhanced velocity dispersion in H2 and [Fe II] {\sim}180 pc from the AGN that also show high L(H2)/L(PAH) and L([Fe II])/L(Pf{\alpha}) ratios to the W and N of the nucleus pinpoint regions where the ionized outflow is depositing energy, via shocks, into the dense interstellar medium between the nucleus and the starburst ring. These resolved mid-infrared observations of the nuclear gas dynamics demonstrate the power of JWST and its high-sensitivity integral-field spectroscopic capability to resolve feedback processes around supermassive black holes in the dusty cores of nearby LIRGs., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, 1 table; accepted for publication in ApJL

Centers of starburst galaxies may be characterized by a specific gas and ice chemistry due to their gas dynamics and the presence of various ice desorption mechanisms. This may result in a peculiar observable composition. We analyze abundances of $CO_2$, a reliable tracer of ice chemistry, from data collected as part of the ALMA large program ALCHEMI, a wide-frequency spectral scan toward the starburst galaxy NGC~253 with an angular resolution of 1.6$''$. We constrain the $CO_2$ abundances in the gas phase using its protonated form $HOCO^+$. The distribution of $HOCO^+$ is similar to that of methanol, which suggests that $HOCO^+$ is indeed produced from the protonation of $CO_2$ sublimated from ice. The $HOCO^+$ fractional abundances are found to be $(1-2)\times10^{-9}$ at the outer part of the central molecular zone (CMZ), while they are lower ($\sim10^{-10}$) near the kinematic center. This peak fractional abundance at the outer CMZ is comparable to that in the Milky Way CMZ, and orders of magnitude higher than that in Galactic disk star-forming regions. From the range of $HOCO^+/CO_2$ ratios suggested from chemical models, the gas-phase $CO_2$ fractional abundance is estimated to be $(1-20)\times10^{-7}$ at the outer CMZ, and orders of magnitude lower near the center. We estimate the $CO_2$ ice fractional abundances at the outer CMZ to be $(2-5)\times10^{-6}$ from the literature. A comparison between the ice and gas $CO_2$ abundances suggests an efficient sublimation mechanism. James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI) images of the luminous infrared (IR) galaxy VV 114 are presented. This redshift ~ 0.020 merger has a western component (VV 114W) rich in optical star clusters and an eastern component (VV 114E) hosting a luminous mid-IR nucleus hidden at UV and optical wavelengths by dust lanes. With MIRI, the VV 114E nucleus resolves primarily into bright NE and SW cores separated by 630 pc. This nucleus comprises 45% of the 15um light of VV 114, with the NE and SW cores having IR luminosities, L_ IR (8-1000um) ~ 8+/-0.8x10^10 L_sun and ~ 5+/-0.5x10^10 L_sun, respectively, and IR densities, Sigma_IR >~ 2+/-0.2x10^13 L_sun / kpc^2 and >~ 7+/-0.7x10^12 L_sun / kpc^2, respectively -- in the range of Sigma_IR for the Orion star-forming core and the nuclei of Arp 220. The NE core, previously speculated to have an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN), has starburst-like mid-IR colors. In contrast, the VV 114E SW has AGN-like colors. Approximately 40 star-forming knots with L_IR ~ 0.02-5x10^10 L_sun are identified, 25% of which have no optical counterpart. Finally, diffuse emission accounts for 40-60% of the mid-IR emission. Mostly notably, filamentary Poly-cyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emission stochastically excited by UV and optical photons accounts for half of the 7.7um light of VV 114. We have used the Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI) on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to obtain the first spatially resolved, mid-infrared (mid-IR) images of IIZw096, a merging luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) at $z = 0.036$. Previous observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope suggested that the vast majority of the total IR luminosity (LIR) of the system originated from a small region outside of the two merging nuclei. New observations with JWST/MIRI now allow an accurate measurement of the location and luminosity density of the source that is responsible for the bulk of the IR emission. We estimate that 40-70% of the IR bolometric luminosity, or $3-5 \times 10^{11}\,{\rm{L_{\odot}}}$, arises from a source no larger than 175pc in radius, suggesting a luminosity density of at least $3-5 \times 10^{12} \, {\rm{L_{\odot} \, kpc^{-2}}}$. In addition, we detect 11 other star forming sources, five of which were previously unknown. The MIRI F1500W/F560W colors of most of these sources, including the source responsible for the bulk of the far-IR emission, are much redder than the nuclei of local LIRGs. Cosmic dust is an essential component shaping both the evolution of galaxies and their observational signatures. How quickly dust builds up in the early Universe remains an open question that requires deep observations at (sub-)millimeter wavelengths to resolve. Here we use Atacama Large Millimeter Array observations of 45 galaxies from the Reionization Era Bright Emission Line Survey (REBELS) and its pilot programs, designed to target [CII] and dust emission in UV-selected galaxies at $z\sim7$, to investigate the dust content of high-redshift galaxies through a stacking analysis. We find that the typical fraction of obscured star formation $f_\mathrm{obs} = \mathrm{SFR}_\mathrm{IR} / \mathrm{SFR}_\mathrm{UV + IR}$ depends on stellar mass, similar to what is observed at lower redshift, and ranges from $f_\mathrm{obs} \approx 0.3 - 0.6$ for galaxies with $\log_{10}\left(M_\star / M_\odot\right) = 9.4 - 10.4$. We further adopt the $z\sim7$ stellar mass function from the literature to extract the obscured cosmic star formation rate density (SFRD) from the REBELS survey. Our results suggest only a modest decrease in the SFRD between $3\lesssim z \lesssim 7$, with dust-obscured star formation still contributing $\sim30\%$ at $z\sim7$. We present new [O III] 88 ${\rm \mu}$m observations of five bright $z \sim 7$ Lyman-break galaxies spectroscopically confirmed by ALMA through the [C II] 158 ${\rm \mu}$m line, unlike recent [O III] detections where Lyman-${\rm \alpha}$ was used. This nearly doubles the sample of Epoch of Reionisation galaxies with robust ($5 \sigma$) detections of [C II] and [O III]. We perform a multi-wavelength comparison with new deep HST images of the rest-frame UV, whose compact morphology aligns well with [O III] tracing ionised gas. By contrast, we find more spatially extended [C II] emission likely produced in neutral gas, as indicated by a [N II] 205 ${\rm \mu}$m non-detection in one source. We find a positive correlation between the equivalent width of the optical [O III] and H${\rm \beta}$ lines and the [O III]/[C II] ratio, as seen in local metal-poor dwarf galaxies. Cloudy models of a nebula of typical density harbouring a young stellar population with a high ionisation parameter appear to adequately reproduce the far-infrared lines. Surprisingly, however, our models fail to reproduce the strength of [O III] 88 ${\rm \mu}$m, unless we assume an ${\rm \alpha}$/Fe enhancement and a near-solar nebular oxygen abundance. On spatially resolved scales, we find [O III]/[C II] shows a tentative anti-correlation with infrared excess, $L_{\rm IR}/L_{\rm UV}$, also seen on global scales in the local Universe. Finally, we introduce the far-infrared spectral energy distribution fitting code MERCURIUS to show that dust-continuum measurements of one source appear to favour a low dust temperature coupled with a high dust mass. This implies a high stellar metallicity yield and may point towards the need of dust production or grain-growth mechanisms beyond supernovae., Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures. We aim to shed light on the physical properties and kinematics of the molecular material in the nucleus of one of the closest type 2 active galaxies. To this end, we obtained high angular resolution ALMA observations of the nucleus of the Circinus galaxy. The observations map the emission at 350GHz and 690GHz with spatial resolutions of ~3.8pc and ~2.2pc, respectively. The continuum emission traces cold ($T\lesssim100$K) dust in a circumnuclear disk with spiral arms on scales of 25pc, plus a marginally resolved nuclear emission peak. The latter is not extended in polar direction as claimed based on earlier ALMA observations. A significant amount (of the order of 40%) of the 350GHz emission is not related to dust, but most likely free-free emission instead. We detect CO(3-2) and CO(6-5) as well as HCO$^+$(4-3), HCN(4-3), and CS(4-3). The CO emission is extended, showing a spiral pattern, similar to the extended dust emission. Towards the nucleus, CO is excited to higher transitions and its emission is self-absorbed, leading to an apparent hole in the CO(3-2) but not the CO(6-5) emission. On the other hand, the high gas density tracers HCO$^+$, HCN, and CS show a strong, yet unresolved (($\lesssim4$pc) concentration of the emission at the nucleus, pointing at a very small 'torus'. The kinematics are dominated by rotation and point at a geometrically thin disk down to the resolution limit of our observations. In contrast to several other AGNs, no HCN enhancement is found towards the nucleus. The Circinus nucleus is therefore composed of at least two distinct components: (1) an optically thin, warm outflow of ionised gas containing clouds of dust; and (2) a cold molecular and dusty disk. These findings support the most recent radiative transfer calculations of the obscuring structures in AGNs, which find a similar two-component structure. We present an ALMA-Herschel joint analysis of sources detected by the ALMA Lensing Cluster Survey (ALCS) at 1.15 mm. Herschel/PACS and SPIRE data at 100-500 $\mu$m are deblended for 180 ALMA sources in 33 lensing cluster fields that are either detected securely (141 sources; in our main sample) or tentatively at S/N$\geq$4 with cross-matched HST/Spitzer counterparts, down to a delensed 1.15-mm flux density of $\sim0.02$ mJy. We performed far-infrared spectral energy distribution modeling and derived the physical properties of dusty star formation for 125 sources (109 independently) that are detected at $>2\sigma$ in at least one Herschel band. 27 secure ALCS sources are not detected in any Herschel bands, including 17 optical/near-IR-dark sources that likely reside at $z=4.2\pm1.2$. The 16-50-84 percentiles of the redshift distribution are 1.15-2.08-3.59 for ALCS sources in the main sample, suggesting an increasing fraction of $z\simeq1-2$ galaxies among fainter millimeter sources ($f_{1150}\sim 0.1$ mJy). With a median lensing magnification factor of $\mu = 2.6_{-0.8}^{+2.6}$, ALCS sources in the main sample exhibit a median intrinsic star-formation rate of $94_{-54}^{+84}\,\mathrm{M}_\odot\,\mathrm{yr}^{-1}$, lower than that of conventional submillimeter galaxies at similar redshifts by a factor of $\sim$3. Our study suggests weak or no redshift evolution of dust temperature with $L_\mathrm{IR}<10^{12}\,\mathrm{L}_\odot$ galaxies within our sample at $z \simeq 0 - 2$. At $L_\mathrm{IR}>10^{12}\,\mathrm{L}_\odot$, the dust temperatures show no evolution across $z \simeq 1 -4$ while being lower than those in the local Universe. For the highest-redshift source in our sample ($z=6.07$), we can rule out an extreme dust temperature ($>$80 K) that was reported for MACS0416 Y1 at $z=8.31$., Comment: 44 pages, 23 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

The cosmic ray ionization rate (CRIR) is a key parameter in understanding the physical and chemical processes in the interstellar medium. Cosmic rays are a significant source of energy in star formation regions, which impacts the physical and chemical processes which drive the formation of stars. Previous studies of the circum-molecular zone (CMZ) of the starburst galaxy NGC 253 have found evidence for a high CRIR value; $10^3-10^6$ times the average cosmic ray ionization rate within the Milky Way. This is a broad constraint and one goal of this study is to determine this value with much higher precision. We exploit ALMA observations towards the central molecular zone of NGC 253 to measure the CRIR. We first demonstrate that the abundance ratio of H$_3$O$^+$ and SO is strongly sensitive to the CRIR. We then combine chemical and radiative transfer models with nested sampling to infer the gas properties and CRIR of several star-forming regions in NGC 253 due to emission from their transitions. We find that each of the four regions modelled has a CRIR in the range $(1-80)\times10^{-14}$ s$^{-1}$ and that this result adequately fits the abundances of other species that are believed to be sensitive to cosmic rays including C$_2$H, HCO$^+$, HOC$^+$, and CO. From shock and PDR/XDR models, we further find that neither UV/X-ray driven nor shock dominated chemistry are a viable single alternative as none of these processes can adequately fit the abundances of all of these species., Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ, updated to include changes made for proofs

We present a high-resolution study of the cold molecular gas as traced by CO(1-0) in the unlensed z$\sim$3.4 submillimeter galaxy SMM J13120+4242, using multi-configuration observations with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA). The gas reservoir, imaged on 0.39" ($\sim$3 kpc) scales, is resolved into two components separated by $\sim$11 kpc with a total extent of 16 $\sim$3 kpc. Despite the large spatial extent of the reservoir, the observations show a CO(1-0) FWHM linewidth of only 267 $\pm$ 64 km s$^{-1}$. We derive a revised line luminosity of L'$_\mathrm{CO(1-0)}$ = (10 $\pm$ 3) $\times$ 10$^{10}$ K km s$^{-1}$ pc$^2$ and a molecular gas mass of M$_\mathrm{gas}$ = (13 $\pm$ 3) $\times$ 10$^{10}$ ($\alpha_\mathrm{CO}$/1) M$_{\odot}$. Despite the presence of a velocity gradient (consistent with previous resolved CO(6-5) imaging), the CO(1-0) imaging shows evidence for significant turbulent motions which are preventing the gas from fully settling into a disk. The system likely represents a merger in an advanced stage. Although the dynamical mass is highly uncertain, we use it to place an upper limit on the CO-to-H$_2$ mass conversion factor $\alpha_\mathrm{CO}$ of 1.4. We revisit the SED fitting, finding that this galaxy lies on the very massive end of the main sequence at z = 3.4. Based on the low gas fraction, short gas depletion time and evidence for a central AGN, we propose that SMM J13120 is in a rapid transitional phase between a merger-driven starburst and an unobscured quasar. We report 18 dust continuum detections ($\geq 3.3\sigma$) at $\sim88{\rm \mu m}$ and $158{\rm \mu m}$ out of 49 ultraviolet(UV)-bright galaxies ($M_{\rm UV} < -21.3$ mag) at $z>6.5$, observed by the Cycle-7 ALMA Large Program, REBELS and its pilot programs. This has more than tripled the number of dust continuum detections known at $z>6.5$. Out of these 18 detections, 12 are reported for the first time as part of REBELS. In addition, 15 of the dust continuum detected galaxies also show a [CII]$_{\rm 158{\rm \mu m}}$ emission line, providing us with accurate redshifts. We anticipate more line emission detections from six targets (including three continuum detected targets) where observations are still ongoing. The dust continuum detected sources in our sample tend to have a redder UV spectral slope than the ones without a dust continuum detection. We estimate that all of the sources have an infrared (IR) luminosity ($L_{\rm IR}$) in a range of $3-8 \times 10^{11} L_\odot$, except for one with $L_{\rm IR} = 1.5^{+0.8}_{-0.5} \times 10^{12}\,L_{\odot}$. Their fraction of obscured star formation is significant at $\gtrsim 50\%$. Some of the dust continuum detected galaxies show spatial offsets ($\sim 0.5-1.5''$) between the rest-UV and far-IR emission peaks. These separations appear to have an increasing trend against an indicator that suggests spatially decoupled phases of obscured and unobscured star formation.
