Abstract Background Desertification is the most severe environmental problem in arid and semi-arid regions and has caused great economic loss every year. However, artificial sand fixation barriers function on sand fixation for only 10–20 years. Searching for a native species with long-term sand fixation effect and strong environmental adaptive capacity, and low water consumption is needed. In this study, we investigated the environmental adaption and sand fixation effect of a grass from Poaceae family (Psammochloa villosa) that is indigenous to the desert of Northwest China. Results The results showed that P. villosa has a streamlined leaf form, strong mechanical strength, and flexibility to adapt to wind. Leaf curling of P. villosa under drought decreased water loss rate through decreased evaporation area to adapt to drought. Significant negative relationship between adventitious root length and horizontal root burial depth indicates that adventitious roots help P. villosa absorb water and nutrients from soil under shallow sand burial condition, which enables P. villosa to adapt to different sand burial conditions. P. villosa fixed sand dunes through the distribution of the population at the top of the dune and the vertical relationship between the direction of windblown sand and the direction of growth of P. villosa, which stopped the expansion of the dune. Conclusions Growth characteristics of wind and drought tolerant leaf traits and adventitious roots under sand burial indicate that P. villosa is well adapted to dry sandy desert conditions and burial by sand. The distribution of the P. villosa population on the sand dune is a “brake” on its expansion. These findings provide new insight for active sand dune fixation and desertification control using native grass in the desertified regions.

Reservoirs in the Sinian Dengying (DY) to Lower Cambrian Longwangmiao (LWM) formations in the central Sichuan Basin exhibit evident hydrothermal activities with pyrobitumen showing signs of alterations caused by hydrothermal fluids. However, few studies have explored the relationship between hydrothermal fluid activity and the evolution of natural gas accumulation, resulting in a significant lack of understanding of oil and gas accumulation history in the DY Formation. The impact of hydrothermal fluids on oil and gas accumulation in the DY Formation is substantial, and a correct understanding of the natural gas accumulation process and the identification of favorable exploration areas in the DY Formation require further research into hydrothermal cracking gas accumulation. By examining the filling features, optical textures, and structural characteristics of pyrobitumen and conducting geochemical studies on fluid inclusions trapped by hydrothermal minerals, this study explored the genesis of pyrobitumen in the DY to LWM formations. The relationship between hydrothermal fluid activity and oil cracking was also analyzed. The the pyrobitumen in the DY to LWM formations in the central Sichuan Basin were formed during hydrothermal fluid activity, exhibiting the same optical anisotropy characteristics as the mesophase pyrobitumen. Pyrobitumen can be divided into four types: fine-grained mosaic, medium-grained mosaic, coarse-grained mosaic, and streamline types. Its formation temperature exceeded 300 ℃, far surpassing the maximum burial temperature of the strata, indicating its hydrothermal fluid-driven genesis. The hydrothermal fluid activity occurred during the Late Permian and was related to the Emeishan mantle plume. The temperature of the hydrothermal fluids exceeded 300 ℃, leading to crude oil cracking in reservoirs of the DY to LWM formations. This study found that hydrothermal fluid activity advanced the cracking time of crude oil in the paleo reservoirs of the DY to LWM formations to the Late Permian, disrupting the existing accumulation model and helping us re-understand the evolution process of gas reservoirs and identify favorable accumulation areas.

Based on the production curves, changes in hydrocarbon composition and quantities over time, and production systems from key trial production wells in lacustrine shale oil areas in China, fine fraction cutting experiments and molecular dynamics numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the effects of changes in shale oil composition on macroscopic fluidity. The concept of “component flow” for shale oil was proposed, and the formation mechanism and conditions of component flow were discussed. The research reveals findings in four aspects. First, a miscible state of light, medium and heavy hydrocarbons form within micropores/nanopores of underground shale according to similarity and intermiscibility principles, which make components with poor fluidity suspended as molecular aggregates in light and medium hydrocarbon solvents, such as heavy hydrocarbons, thereby decreasing shale oil viscosity and enhancing fluidity and outflows. Second, small-molecule aromatic hydrocarbons act as carriers for component flow, and the higher the content of gaseous and light hydrocarbons, the more conducive it is to inhibit the formation of larger aggregates of heavy components such as resin and asphalt, thus increasing their plastic deformation ability and bringing about better component flow efficiency. Third, higher formation temperatures reduce the viscosity of heavy hydrocarbon components, such as wax, thereby improving their fluidity. Fourth, preservation conditions, formation energy, and production system play important roles in controlling the content of light hydrocarbon components, outflow rate, and forming stable “component flow”, which are crucial factors for the optimal compatibility and maximum flow rate of multi-component hydrocarbons in shale oil. The component flow of underground shale oil is significant for improving single-well production and the cumulative ultimate recovery of shale oil.

Study region: Typical mountain areas in the Hexi Corridor, China. Study focus: Water security and ecosystem sustainability of arid inland river basins are highly dependent on upstream streamflow. However, due to the complex geographical environment and limited observation data in the study region, the attribution of spatiotemporal variations in streamflow influenced by climate change and/or human activities remains unclear. Here, we used partial least squares regression (PLSR) and the Budyko framework to unravel the dominant drivers of spatiotemporal variation in streamflow over the past 30 yr. New hydrological insight for the region: Precipitation, topographic wetness index, slope, forest land, gross primary productivity, hydrological connectivity, soil organic carbon content, silt content, relative relief, NDVI and gravel content dominated spatial variation in streamflow. Temporal variation of streamflow was sensitive to precipitation and land surface. Specifically, increased precipitation and land surface alteration dominated the increase in streamflow in 50 % of the watersheds and the decrease in streamflow in 33 % of them, respectively. Further, land surface alteration was dominated by expansion of agricultural and built-up areas, weakened hydrological connectivity, increased landscape aggregation and forest cover. Controlling agricultural and built-up areas and the scale of afforestation, and focusing on the dynamics of hydrological connectivity and landscape patterns in the upstream reaches are imperative to maintain the security and sustainability of water resources in the arid inland river basins.

On-orbit processing is an important research direction in the real-time remote sensing detection of earth's surface anomalies (ESSA). However, existing methods cannot comprehensively utilize multi-dimensional remote sensing characteristics to detect multi-type ESSA simultaneously. Meanwhile, it is difficult to realize the comprehensive utilization of multi-dimensional remote sensing characteristics for the limited storage and computing resources on satellites. Therefore, this study proposed a detection method for multi-type ESSA based on multi-dimensional feature space. The proposed method first selected the remote sensing characteristics reflecting the basic earth's surface elements to construct a multi-dimensional feature space and proposed two comprehensive remote sensing characteristics. Then, these characteristics were used to build a prior knowledge base reflecting the normal earth's surface conditions. Finally, by comparing the real-time acquired data and prior knowledge base, this study completed ESSA detection. The validation results indicated that the proposed method can effectively detect multi-type ESSA with an accuracy of over 85%. Moreover, the proposed method simplifies the large and complex ESSA remote sensing characteristic system, which greatly reduces the complexity of ESSA detection methods and increases the possibility of on-orbit processing.

Frequent water quality anomalies severely affect the ecological environment, hindering the protection, restoration, and sustainable use of inland freshwater ecosystems in Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 15.1. Thus, there is an urgent need to conduct real-time monitoring and early warnings of various water quality anomalies. However, current remote sensing indices of water quality anomalies are aimed at only one specific water anomaly event in water regions, which makes it difficult to achieve high-precision and on-orbit detection of sudden water quality anomalies in complex geographical environments with the limited storage and computing resources of satellites. Therefore, this study proposed a remote sensing index for the detection of multi-type water quality anomalies in complex geographical environments by analyzing the spectral differences between different earth’s surfaces. The validation results indicated that the proposed index achieved satisfactory performance for the synchronous detection of most water quality anomalies and could be used directly in complex geographical environments to detect water anomalies. Overall, this study contributes to the realization of real-time water quality anomaly detection methods in complex geographical environments, which increases the possibility of on-orbit water quality anomaly detection.

Water resources in the soil play an essential role in hydrological processes and ecosystem functions on the Tibetan Plateau. However, accurately measuring soil moisture distribution in this region presents challenges due to the diverse ecosystem types, complex terrain, and harsh environmental conditions. In this study, we introduce an approach for estimating mesoscale soil moisture in the Qilian Mountains (QLM) region of the eastern Tibetan Plateau using a cosmic-ray neutron rover. Soil moisture estimates derived from neutron count rates, newly adjusted by vegetation effects, demonstrated good agreement with soil moisture measurements obtained through soil sampling at 26 calibration sites across the region (RMSE = 0.025 g g−1). The calibration parameter N0_NDVI was 443 cpm in the QLM. Utilizing NDVI as vegetation correction method showed potential improvements in the accuracy of converting neutron counts to soil moisture across the diverse mountainous ecosystem types. The newly developed calibration equation provided a high-precision, high spatial resolution soil moisture transect across various landscapes measured by the rover. The average mesoscale soil moisture along the rover route varied by ecosystem types, with values of 0.10 g/g in deserts, 0.17 g/g in grasslands, 0.13 g/g in forests, 0.18 g/g in subalpine shrublands, and 0.20 g/g in croplands. Land cover types emerged as crucial determinants of mesoscale soil moisture variability in the QLM region. These findings offer valuable mesoscale soil moisture data and new insights into soil water information at the transect scale across diverse ecosystem types in the Tibetan Plateau.

Abstract Background Disturbance is a key driver of changes in terrestrial ecosystems, especially in water limited regions. In the desert ecosystem of Northwest China, shrubs are often foraged by camels and this causes the shrubs lost their aboveground tissues. Although the aboveground tissue could recover after the disturbance, the mechanisms of resprouts’ recovery after the disturbance are still poorly understood. We investigated the morphological and physiological characteristics and root water uptake sources of resprouts and non-disturbed seedlings of four desert shrub species that were often foraged by camels. Results The results showed that the resprouts grew rapidly after the removal of aboveground tissue. The height and aboveground biomass of resprouts reached the level of 5-year-old seedlings following a growing season. Compared to un-disturbed seedlings, higher leaf water potential, leaf hydraulic conductance and photosynthesis rate were observed in resprouts, indicating that resprouts grew rapidly after disturbance. Furthermore, we found that the root water uptake source did not change after disturbance. This indicated that the roots of resprouts kept intact water uptake capacity after disturbance, which could keep supplying sufficient water to the aboveground tissue. Due to the removal of aboveground tissue of the resprouts, the water demand of aboveground tissue decreased, which induced an imbalance of water supply from roots to demand of aboveground tissues of resprouts. This explained the improved physiological performance and rapid recovery of resprouts after disturbance. Conclusions The imbalance of water supply to demand contributes to the rapid recovery of desert shrubs after disturbance. The findings provide insight into the eco-physiological mechanism for the maintenance of desert ecosystems that are facing disturbance.

Scene-level change detection (SLCD) can provide semantic change information at image level, thus it is of great significance for monitoring land use changes. Supervised SLCD approaches tend to outperform unsupervised ones. However, the existing supervised methods rely on postclassification, which often results in unsatisfactory performance due to classification error accumulation. We therefore formulate SLCD as a similarity learning task, and propose a scene similarity learning network (SSLN) for land use SLCD. To be specific, SSLN is a two-branch network with ResNet as the backbone for feature extraction, where the global feature difference and the multiscale local feature fusion modules are considered in order to better mine the temporal correlation between bitemporal scenes. Then, the trained SSLN is further exploited to obtain the similarity of scene pairs for determining the similarity threshold via threshold traversal algorithm. Finally, the land use scenes are categorized into changed or unchanged by comparing scene similarity with the threshold. Experimental results on the publicly available MtS-WH dataset and our newly released land use scene change detection dataset show that the proposed approach achieves better performance than comparison methods, indicating that our approach is a simple yet effective solution to land use SLCD.

Abstract Vegetation restoration in dryland regions may be a powerful way to control desertification and promote local habitat recovery. In these artificial revegetation systems, ecosystem processes and functioning are strongly determined by nitrogen (N) availability, while soil inorganic N (SIN) is the major available N form and is absorbed as a main N source for plants. However, SIN dynamics, their influencing factors, and their relative importance to the ecosystem of these N‐limited systems are not well understood. A field investigation was conducted to examine the monthly variations in SIN and its response to planting age and vegetation type in a typical artificial sand‐fixing system in northwestern China. The SIN content in topsoil (0–20 cm) during the growing season ranged from 7.10 to 95.65 mg kg−1, with a mean value of 27.14 mg kg−1. Soil nitrate N had a dominant role in determining SIN monthly dynamics, which showed a fluctuating trend with two peak values in early July and late August. SIN showed a significant increasing trend with the planting age of sand‐fixing vegetation, and it was highest for Nitraria sphaerocarpa (55.66 ± 5.76 mg kg−1), followed by Haloxylon ammodendron (29.81 ± 3.47 mg kg−1) and interspace (11.39 ± 1.13 mg kg−1). Texture features play an important role in the field of remote sensing classification. However, most existing methods lack a comprehensive consideration of spatial continuity, which makes them either destroy the spatial integrity of regular ground objects or fail to quantify the fragmentation degrees of irregular ground objects. These problems weak the ability of existing methods to distinguish ground objects with different fragmentation degrees. Therefore, this study proposed a new texture feature extraction method considering spatial continuity and gray diversity (SCGD). SCGD first connected all pixels in a neighborhood in series from end to end according to the row and column directions, and the diversities of the spatial continuity encoding in different directions were calculated by the Shannon index. Then, the Shannon index was used to calculate the gray diversity. Finally, SCGD calculated the weighted average of spatial continuity diversity and gray diversity to obtain the final texture feature values. Validation results indicated that SCGD can effectively distinguish ground objects with different fragmentation degrees, and its performance is better than that of traditional methods. As the spatial resolution decreases, its performance advantage becomes more obvious. Moreover, SCGD has great application potential in the field of ground object classification, and combining it with deep learning models will contribute to achieving the fine recognition of ground objects.

Reclamation in desert-oasis areas is effective for improving land productivity and ensuring food supply. However, the understanding of the sustainable productivity of soils under long-term conventional cultivation after desert reclamation is still poor. This study was conducted to determine soil structural properties, organic carbon stocks (SOCS) and nutrient stocks under four desert reclamation ages (0, 30, 60, and 100) in the arid region of northwest China, and evaluate the influence of long-term conventional cultivation on desert soil quality. The results indicated that soil structural stability index (SI) in topsoil improved after desert reclamation, but showed a slight downward trend after 60 years of cultivation, and farmland soil in the study area was still at serious risk of degradation (SI ≤ 5 %) overall. SOCS were enlarged by 4.2 times after desert reclamation, and nitrogen stocks (NS) and phosphorus stocks (PS) were increased by 1.2–6.5 times. However, the regression analysis showed that SOCS and NS in 0–40 cm soil layer and PS in topsoil stopped increasing after about 60-year conventional cultivation. Soil stoichiometry, pH and texture were the key factors affecting SOCS, NS and PS in oasis farmlands. In summary, our study emphasized that soil quality in arid areas was greatly improved after desert reclamation, however, long-term conventional agriculture management measures limited this improvement. Therefore, long-term conventional management of agricultural land in arid areas should introduce appropriate conservation measures to achieve sustainable soil productivity.

Background: Osteosarcoma, a tumor that originates from bone cells, has a poor prognosis and a high degree of malignancy. Anlotinib, a small-molecule multi-target tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI), is the first-line drug in treating osteosarcoma, especially in late-stage osteosarcoma. However, patients often develop resistance after using anlotinib for a certain period, which poses a challenge to its further clinical application. Recently, several TKIs, for instance regorafenib and cabozantinib, have showed clinical interest in treating osteosarcoma and target both vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR) and mesenchymal epithelial transition factor (c-MET). Therefore, the identification of new TKI warrants further investigation. Methods: We performed CCK8 aasays to confirm that BMS-794833 sensitization osteosarcoma cells to anlotinib. Bioinformatics analysis and rescue experiments showed that the reduce of resistance were dependent on the VEGFR/Ras/CDK2 pathway. Cell line based xenograft model were used to demonstrate that BMS-794833 and anlotinib could synergistically treat OS. Results: Here, we found that BMS-794833 reduced anlotinib resistance in osteosarcoma by targeting the VEGFR/Ras/CDK2 pathway. CCK8 assay showed that BMS-794833 significantly improved the resistance of osteosarcoma cells to anlotinib. The results of rescue experiments showed that the regulatory effects of BMS-794833 on the proliferation and drug resistance of osteosarcoma cells were dependent on the VEGFR/Ras/CDK2 pathway. In addition, BMS-794833 affected the resistance of osteosarcoma cells to anlotinib through epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) and apoptosis pathways. More importantly, BMS-794833 and anlotinib exerted synergistic therapeutic effects against osteosarcoma in vivo. Conclusion: Altogether, this study reveals a new (VEGFR)-targeting drug that can be combined with anlotinib for the treatment of osteosarcoma, which provides an important theoretical basis for overcoming anlotinib resistance.

Based on the recent oil and gas discoveries and geological understandings on the ultra-deep strata of sedimentary basins, the formation and occurrence of hydrocarbons in the ultra-deep strata were investigated with respect to the processes of basin formation, hydrocarbon generation, reservoir formation and hydrocarbon accumulation, and key issues in ultra-deep oil and gas exploration were discussed. The ultra-deep strata in China underwent two extensional-convergent cycles in the Meso-Neoproterozoic Era and the Early Paleozoic Era respectively, with the tectonic-sedimentary differentiation producing the spatially adjacent source-reservoir assemblages. There are diverse large-scale carbonate reservoirs such as mound-beach, dolomite, karst fracture-vug, fractured karst and faulted zone, as well as over-pressured clastic rock and fractured bedrock reservoirs. Hydrocarbons were accumulated in multiple stages, accompanied by adjusting and finalizing in the late stage. The distribution of hydrocarbons is controlled by high-energy beach zone, regional unconformity, paleo-high and large-scale fault zone. The ultra-deep strata endow oil and gas resources as 33% of the remaining total resources, suggesting an important successive domain for hydrocarbon development in China. The large-scale pool-forming geologic units and giant hydrocarbon enrichment zones in ultra-deep strata are key and promising prospects for delivering successive discoveries. The geological conditions and enrichment zone prediction of ultra-deep oil and gas are key issues of petroleum geology.

Abstract Nuclear ubiquitous casein and cyclin-dependent kinase substrate 1 (NUCKS1) has been reported to play an oncogenic role in several cancers. However, the biological functions and regulatory mechanism of NUCKS1 in osteosarcoma have not been fully understood. In this study, we reported that NUCKS1 was significantly increased in osteosarcoma. Depletion of NUCKS1 decreased osteosarcoma cell proliferation and metastasis in vivo and in vitro. Overexpression of NUCKS1 accelerated osteosarcoma cell aggressiveness. Mechanistically, NUCKS1 facilitated asparagine (Asn) synthesis by transcriptionally upregulating asparagine synthetase (ASNS) expression and elevating the levels of Asn in osteosarcoma cells, leading to increased cell growth and metastasis. Inhibition of ASNS or reduction of Asn decreased osteosarcoma cell aggressiveness and impaired the promoting effects of NUCKS1 on tumorigenesis and metastasis. Furthermore, we also found that by acting as a sponge for miR-4768-3p, LINC00629 promoted NUCKS1 expression. Collectively, our findings highlight the role of NUCKS1 in regulating asparagine metabolism and reveal that LINC00629 is an important regulator of NUCKS1 that contributes to NUCKS1 upregulation in osteosarcoma.

Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) has been applied to the analysis of arsenic forms in water, plants, and other samples; however, it has not been used to determine the form of arsenic in soil due to the complex soil matrix. The purpose of this study was to develop an analytical method for the simultaneous determination of inorganic arsenic species (As (III) and As (V)) and monomethylarsonic acid (MMA) in soil using GC-MS. The arsenic compounds were subjected to derivatization with 2,3-dimercapto-1-propanol (BAL) and subsequently analyzed using GC-MS. The BAL volume, derivatization reaction time, and temperature were optimized using standard added soil extracts. A reaction with 150 μL of BAL at 40°C for 30 min was selected as the optimal condition for quantitative derivatization of both inorganic arsenic (iAs) and MMA. The calibration curves exhibited linearity within the range of 5-100 ng/mL for each arsenic species, with correlation coefficients exceeding 0.997. The limits of detection for each arsenic species were determined to be 0.24 ng/mL and 1.31 ng/mL, respectively. The accuracy of the method was verified by the recovery of reference samples. The recovery experiments for reference samples showed that the recovery rates for As (III), As (V), and MMA were 89.5-93.7%, 88.5-105.6%, and 90.2-95.8% respectively, with precision ranging from 4.6 to 6.5%, 2.3 to 3.8%, and 2.4 to 6.3%. These results indicate good accuracy and precision. The accuracy of this method is not significantly different from that of liquid chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (p = 0.05). The optimized method was sensitive, convenient and reliable for the extraction and analysis of different arsenic species in soil samples.

The adsorption and desorption of phosphorus (P) in soil constitute a crucial internal cycle that is closely associated with soil fertility, exerting direct influence on the quantity, form, and availability of P within the soil. The vertical spatial variation characteristics of soil adsorption and desorption were investigated for the 0-100 cm soil layer in the northeast black soil region in this study. The maximum adsorption capacity (Qmax) and maximum adsorption buffer capacity (MBC) of black soil in the study area ranged from 313.8 to 411.9 mg kg-1 and from 3.1 to 28.8 L kg-1, respectively, within the soil layer of 0-100 cm depth, exhibiting an increasing trend with greater soil depth. The degree of P adsorption saturation (DPS) exhibited a contrasting trend with the variations in Qmax and MBC, ranging from 3.8% to 21.6%. The maximum desorption capacity (Dmax) and desorption rate (Dr) of soil P ranged from 112.8 to 215.7 mg kg-1 and 32.1% to 52.5%, respectively, while the readily desorbable P (RDP) in soil was within the range of 1.02 to 3.35 mg kg-1. Both Dmax, Dr, and RDP exhibited a decreasing trend with increasing soil depth before showing an upward trend. These research findings not only provide essential background data for the systematic investigation of soil P in the black soil region but also serve as a valuable reference for assessing soil quality in this area.

The geological characteristics and production practices of the major middle- and high-maturity shale oil exploration areas in China are analyzed. Combined with laboratory results, it is clear that three essential conditions, i.e. economic initial production, commercial cumulative oil production of single well, and large-scale recoverable reserves confirmed by the testing production, determine whether the continental shale oil can be put into large-scale commercial development. The quantity and quality of movable hydrocarbons are confirmed to be crucial to economic development of shale oil, and focuses in evaluation of shale oil enrichment area/interval. The evaluation indexes of movable hydrocarbon enrichment include: (1) the material basis for forming retained hydrocarbon, including TOC>2% (preferentially 3%–4%), and type I–II1 kerogens; (2) the mobility of retained hydrocarbon, which is closely related to the hydrocarbon composition and flow behaviors of light/heavy components, and can be evaluated from the perspectives of thermal maturity (Ro), gas-oil ratio (GOR), crude oil density, quality of hydrocarbon components, preservation conditions; and (3) the reservoir characteristics associated with the engineering reconstruction, including the main pore throat distribution zone, reservoir physical properties (including fractures), lamellation feature and diagenetic stage, etc. Accordingly, 13 evaluation indexes in three categories and their reference values are established. The evaluation indicates that the light shale oil zones in the Gulong Sag of Songliao Basin have the most favorable enrichment conditions of movable hydrocarbons, followed by light oil and black oil zones, containing 20.8×108 t light oil resources in reservoirs with Ro>1.2%, pressure coefficient greater than 1.4, effective porosity greater than 6%, crude oil density less than 0.82 g/cm3, and GOR>100 m3/m3. The shale oil in the Gulong Sag can be explored and developed separately by the categories (resource sweet spot, engineering sweet spot, and tight oil sweet spot) depending on shale oil flowability. The Gulong Sag is the most promising area to achieve large-scale breakthrough and production of continental shale oil in China.

A three-dimensional dynamic heat transfer mathematical model of the process when cored wire feed in molten iron is established based on finite volume method (FVM). The calculation area is meshed with triangles and quadrilaterals to determine nodes and control volumes, and implicit time integration method is used to ensure the stability of calculating process. For exposing the dynamic heat transfer behavior, the variation of temperature field and explosion characteristics of cored wires are studied. In addition, the melt loss rate of the top end of cored wire and the correlation among melt explosion depth, molten iron temperature and feeding speed of cored wires are theoretically calculated. More importantly, the influence of different structures of cored wires on the absorption rate of magnesium are considered. The calculation results are in good agreement with the experimental data, which indicate that the existing theoretical model has good validity and can provide theoretical guidance for spheroidization process in molten iron.

Oasis development relies on water supply and the supply mode can be divided into artesian piloting water (APW) mode and high-lift pumping water (HPW) mode. APW mode relies on gravity to retain and intercept water. HPW mode uses cascade pumping irrigation projects to transport water by up to 470 m, mainly serving extremely arid areas. A comprehensive analysis of the water-energy-food-ecology (WEFE) nexus to optimize water use management is conducive to the sustainable development of an oasis. Due to differences in water supply difficulty and cost, there are significant differences in socioeconomic development, water management, and drought adaptation between the APW and HPW oases. Taking the APW and HPW regions of Ningxia in the Yellow River Basin as the study areas, this study constructed a Bayesian network (BN) to quantify the causality and uncertainty in the WEFE nexus to analyze the development status and the evolving characteristics of the human-water relationships of the two regions. Scenario simulation based on BN quantified the impact and difference of management measures on the WEFE nexus in the two regions. During 2000–2020, as the APW region developed, agricultural water use decreased by 36%, showing great water-saving potential, while the development of the HPW region experienced water shortages. Excessive and inefficient agricultural water use is the main factor affecting the sustainability in both regions. Improving irrigation coefficient is the most effective way to reduce agricultural water use, and there is still a large adjustment space in agricultural water prices, channel lining rates and drip irrigation popularization areas to improve this coefficient. The adjustment of the planting structure will have great water-saving potential in the APW region, such as reducing rice area to 20,000 ha will save 5 × 108 m3 of water, but the potential is limited in the HPW area dominated by drought-resistant crops. In addition, improving wastewater treatment and ecological water use will effectively improve surface water quality and the ecological environment in the APW and HPW regions.

The major enrichment type of shale oil in the Chang 73 shale of Upper Triassic Yanchang Formation in the Ordos Basin is unknown. This paper analyzes the organic matter transformation ratio, hydrocarbon expulsion efficiency and roof/floor sealing conditions of the Chang 73 shale, and evaluates the major enrichment type of shale oil in this interval. The average organic matter transformation ratio of the Chang 73 shale is about 45%; in other words, more than 50% of the organic matters have not transformed to hydrocarbons, and the lower the maturity, the greater the proportion of untransformed organic matters. The cumulative hydrocarbon expulsion efficiency of the transformed hydrocarbon is 27.5% on average, and the total proportion of untransformed organic matters plus retained hydrocarbons is greater than 70%. The relative hydrocarbon expulsion efficiency of the Chang 73 shale is 60% on average, that is, about 40% of hydrocarbons retain in the shale. The Chang 73 shale corresponds to Chang 71+2 and Chang 8 sandstones as the roof and floor, respectively, and is further overlaid by Chang 6 shale, where extensive low porosity and low permeability–tight oil reservoirs have formed in the parts with relatively good porosity and permeability. Moreover, the Chang 73 shale is tested to be in a negative pressure system (the pressure coefficient of 0.80–0.85). Therefore, the roof/floor sealing conditions of the Chang 73 shale are poor. The retained hydrocarbons appear mostly in absorbed status, with low mobility. It is concluded that the medium–high mature shale oil is not the major enrichment type of shale oil in the Chang 73 shale, but there may be enrichment opportunity for shale oil with good mobility in the areas where the sealing conditions are good without faults and fractures and oil reservoirs are formed off Chang 71+2, Chang 6 and Chang 8. Furthermore, low–medium mature shale oil is believed to have great potential and is the major enrichment type of shale oil in the Chang 73 shale. It is recommended to prepare relevant in-situ conversion technologies by pilot test and figure out the resource availability and distribution.

Abstract Background Escaping from ER stress-induced apoptosis plays an important role in the progression of many tumours. However, its molecular mechanism in osteosarcoma remains incompletely understood. Methods The molecular mechanism was investigated using RNA sequencing, qRT–PCR and Western blot assays. The relationship between LINC00629 and KLF4 was investigated using RNA pulldown and ubiquitylation assays. The transcriptional regulation of laminin subunit alpha 4 (LAMA4) by KLF4 was identified using bioinformatic analysis, a luciferase assay, and a chromatin immunoprecipitation assay. Results Here, we demonstrated that LINC00629 was increased under ER stress treatment. Elevated LINC00629 inhibited ER stress-induced osteosarcoma cell apoptosis and promoted clonogenicity and migration in vitro and in vivo. Further mechanistic studies indicated that LINC00629 interacted with KLF4 and suppressed its degradation, which led to a KLF4 increase in osteosarcoma. In addition, we also found that KLF4 upregulated LAMA4 expression by directly binding to its promoter and that LINC00629 inhibited ER stress-induced apoptosis and facilitated osteosarcoma cell clonogenicity and metastasis by activating the KLF4-LAMA4 pathway. Conclusion Collectively, our data indicate that LINC00629 is a critical long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) induced by ER stress and plays an oncogenic role in osteosarcoma cell by activating the KLF4-LAMA4 axis.

Due to the suddenness, diversity, randomness and complexity of various earth's surface anomalies caused by natural and human factors, the time-efficiency of traditional satellite remote sensing technology is seriously lagging behind the actual needs of the earth's surface anomalies early warning and emergency handling. Real-time earth's surface anomaly detection has become an important issue for achieving ecological security, human safety and health, and high-quality socioeconomic development. Therefore, this study proposed a real-time detection framework for earth's surface anomalies using a single temporal remote sensing data based on a priori knowledge base. The framework first selected an appropriate remote sensing feature system and constructed a priori knowledge base effectively reflecting the natural evolutionary law of the normal earth's surface. Then, the earth's surface anomalies were identified by comparing the real-time acquired remote sensing data to the priori knowledge base with the designed detection rules. Finally, the intensity of earth's surface anomalies was evaluated comprehensively using pixel- and patch-scale information. The preliminary analysis of several specific cases indicated that the proposed framework was reliable and could effectively identify the earth's surface anomalies with high accuracy. This proposed framework is fully applicable to the real-time detection of most earth's surface anomalies using a single temporal remote sensing data, which is not limited to a single earth's surface anomaly event. Meanwhile, the framework presents great potential for on-orbit processing of the earth's surface anomaly detection and realizing real-time remote sensing services for the early warning of the earth's surface anomalies.

In this paper, the sieve bootstrap test for multiple change points in the mean of long memory sequence is studied. Firstly, the ANOVA test statistics for change points detection is obtained. Secondly, sieve bootstrap statistics is constructed and the consistency under the Mallows measure is proved. Finally, the effectiveness of the method was illustrated by simulation and example analysis. Simulation results show that our method can not only control the empirical size well but also have reasonable good power.

Tree height (Htree) and root depth (Droot) are the two most critical functional traits for plant ecological strategies. However, the global varying patterns of Htree and Droot and the ecological significance for tree survival under changed climate conditions are less understood. Here, we compiled Htree, Droot, and six root traits related to soil resource absorption for 301 field-grown tree species distributed 776 sites worldwide. The relationships between Htree and Droot across different climate conditions and the implications for tree mortality during drought events were investigated. We found Htree and Droot were often decoupled in angiosperms and gymnosperms among different climate conditions. Greater Htree was prone to occur in warm and moist climates, while greater Droot tended to occur in warm and dry climates with low soil water availability. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that trees have evolved towards smaller Htree but deeper Droot from the deep time. Although dense root structures to some extent contributed to sustaining the resource supply–demand balance of large trees with shallow roots (great Htree/ Droot), the large trees with greater Htree/ Droot were more vulnerable to drought-induced mortality. The findings suggest that the linkage of below- and above-ground reaches has a pivotal role in understanding tree mortality during drought events. The insight will allow more accurate vegetation model prediction for tree sorting processes under climate change scenarios.

Comparative analysis of the impacts of precipitation and land use on streamflow from adjacent catchments is critical to exploring pathways toward water security and sustainable development. In this work, two adjacent catchments (the Mayinghe and Xidahe, abbreviated as MYC and XDC, respectively) in northwestern China were selected to compare the impacts of precipitation change and land use alteration on streamflow change during 1956–2019 using field observation streamflow data and satellite data. An opposite trend of streamflow was found for the two catchments from 1956 to 2019: the streamflow decreased significantly in the MYC (-0.63 × 107m3/10a, p < 0.05), while it increased in the XDC (0.71 × 107m3/10a, p < 0.05). Land conversion dominated the streamflow reduction in the MYC, with a contribution of about 68.3%. In the XDC, precipitation was confirmed to be the major factor driving the increase in streamflow. The streamflow for farmland irrigation reached 27.97 × 104 m3/km2 in the MYC, which was the leading factor of streamflow reduction in the basin. The findings obtained from this work can shed light on the quantitative understanding of streamflow changes in small catchments and offer a scientific basis for sustainable water management in other inland river basins.

Introduction: Using satellite data to identify the planting area of summer crops is difficult because of their similar phenological characteristics.Methods: This study developed a new method for differentiating maize from other summer crops based on the revised time-weighted dynamic time warping (TWDTW) method, a phenology-based classification method, by combining the phenological information of multiple spectral bands and indexes instead of one single index. First, we compared the phenological characteristics of four main summer crops in Henan Province of China in terms of multiple spectral bands and indexes. The key phenological periods of each band and index were determined by comparing the identification accuracy based on the county-level statistical areas of maize. Second, we improved the TWDTW distance calculation for multiple bands and indexes by summing the rank maps of a single band or index. Third, we evaluated the performance of a multi-band and multi-period TWDTW method using Sentinel-2 time series of all spectral bands and some synthetic indexes for maize classification in Henan Province.Results and Discussion: The results showed that the combination of red edge (740.2 nm) and short-wave infrared (2202.4 nm) outperformed all others and its overall accuracy of maize planting area was about 91.77% based on 2431 field samples. At the county level, the planting area of maize matched the statistical area closely. The results of this study demonstrate that the revised TWDTW makes effective use of crop phenological information and improves the extraction accuracy of summer crops’ planting areas over a large scale. Additionally, multiple band combinations are more effective for summer crops mapping than a single band or index input.

Based on correlation between geochemical characteristics of Sinian and Cambrian source rocks and discovered gas reservoirs, paleoand the analysis on geological conditions of reservoir formation, the sources of natural gas in the Sinian of Sichuan Basin have been discussed to sort out the contribution of Sinian source rocks to the gas reservoirs and effectiveness of Sinian primary gas-bearing system. Through the analysis of natural gas composition, carbon and hydrogen isotopes and effectiveness of Sinian accumulation assemblages, it is concluded that: (1) The natural gas derived from the Sinian source rock is characterized by low ethane content, heavy ethane carbon isotope and light methane hydrogen isotope, and obviously different from the gas generated by the Cambrian source rock. (2) The gas reservoirs discovered in Sinian Dengying Formation are sourced by Sinian and Cambrian source rocks, and the Sinian source rock contributes different proportions to the gas in the 4th member and the 2nd member of the Dengying Formation, specifically, 39% and 55% to the 4th member in marginal zone and intra-platform, 54% and 68% to the 2th member in the marginal zone and intra-platform respectively. (3) The effectiveness of the Sinian primary gas-bearing system depends on the gas generating effectiveness of the source kitchen, reservoir and combination of gas accumulation elements. For high-over mature marine source rocks at the Ro of less than 3.5%, besides gas generated from the thermal cracking of liquid hydrocarbon, the kerogen still has some gas generation potential by thermal degradation. In addition, the Sinian microbial dolomite still preserves relatively good-quality reservoirs despite large burial depths, which match well with other basic conditions for gas accumulation in central Sichuan paleo-uplift, increasing the possibility of Sinian primary gas-bearing system. The research results confirm that the Sinian primary gas-bearing system is likely to form large-scale accumulation.

Abstract Current and previous studies have extensively studied the physiological and ecological consequences of genome size (GS) on plants because of the limiting effect of GS on cell size. However, it is still obscure whether such limiting effect could be shifted by environmental pressures, or not. Here, we compiled a global dataset comprised of GS, xylem vessel diameter (Vdia), xylem hydraulic conductivity (KS), P50 (xylem water potential at the loss of 50% maximum KS), and climate factors of 251 phylogeny and habitat divergent species from 59 families. The results showed that GS could limit the Vdia of the species from the same family sampled in the similar climate conditions. But the expected positive relationship between GS and Vdia became uncertain and even negative across different environmental conditions. Vdia was strongly positively coordinated with mean annual temperature (MAT), mean annual precipitation (MAP), and potential evapotranspiration (PET). Furthermore, Vdia as the anatomic foundation of plant hydraulic performance was strongly positively coordinated with KS and negatively coordinated with −P50. The strong environmental selection on KS and P50 explained the concerted regulation of Vdia by environmental factors. The findings revealed the combined regulation of GS and environmental pressures on xylem cell size and thus affected plant eco‐physiological performance. The shifted cell size limiting effect of GS by environmental factors manifests plants great plasticity under changed environmental conditions.

Insights into what limits the growth of soil microorganisms in mountain ecosystems increase our understanding of microbial functions and processes. Although the distribution pattern of soil microorganisms in mountain ecosystems has been widely studied, their role in biogeochemical cycles along elevation gradients of mountain ecosystems in arid regions is poorly understood. In this study we analyzed the soil physicochemical properties, soil microbial community structure, extracellular enzymatic activities, ecoenzymatic stoichiometry, microbial metabolism, and their relationships along the 1,300–2,500 m elevational gradient of the Helan Mountains, northwest China. The results showed that the total microbial biomass and its components did not significantly vary with elevation. The GP:GN (gram-positive: gram-negative bacteria) ratios at low elevations were higher than those at the mid and high elevations, indicating enrichment of oligotrophic bacteria at low elevations. The five extracellular enzymes significantly differed with elevation gradient, while the levels of carbon (C)- and nitrogen (N)- acquiring enzymes first increased and then decreased with increasing elevations. Ecoenzymatic stoichiometry indicated that significant limitation of microbial growth by carbon (C) and phosphorus (P) levels occurred at high and medium elevations. Soil physicochemical characteristics, microbial community composition, and ecoenzymatic activities accounted for 43.94 and 22.21% of the microbial C and P restriction, respectively. Our study suggests that mountain ecosystems with high organic C storage possess abundant microbial populations limited by relative C and P. The study also provides important insights linking microbial metabolisms to the environmental gradients in arid mountain ecosystems.

Study region: Upper Heihe River Basin, Northwest China. Study focus: We investigated potential climate change under three Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP 2.6, 4.5, and 8.5) and their impacts on frozen ground in the upper Heihe River Basin using the ensemble climate data from eight general circulation models and the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). New hydrological insights for the region: Air and ground freezing indices declined significantly during the baseline period (1976–2015), whereas the thawing indices increased, indicating the heat accumulation in study area. The frost depth, which refers to the potential frost depth of active layer in permafrost areas and the maximum frost depth in seasonally frozen areas, decreased significantly at the rate of 3 cm/10 yr. The SWAT-simulation and gray relational analysis revealed that soil water was controlled by precipitation and frost depth in spring and autumn. Compared to that of the baseline, the projected frost depth is projected to decline by 0.07–0.1 m during the near future (2020–2059) and 0.08–0.36 m for the far future (2060–2099). In addition, we developed a long-term warning system, which indicates that the degree of frozen ground degradation would be mild during the near future and would be severe for the far future under RCP 8.5. This study provides valuable insights into the protection of frozen-ground in the Upper Heihe River Basin.

The spatial pattern of vegetation can reflect the impacts of the environment on plants and the response of plants to the environment, which can promote a deep understanding of the potential driving mechanisms of vegetation evolution and community maintenance. A sand-binding vegetation system without irrigation has been implemented in the oasis–desert transitional zone since the 1970 s, where the annual precipitation has been approximately 120 mm. While the mobile dunes have been effectively stabilized, a patchy pattern of sand-binding vegetation has been observed. However, we do not understand why the pattern of sand-binding vegetation changed from the initial uniform distribution to the current patchy pattern. In this study, low-altitude UAV remote sensing technology and imaging-based quantification techniques were used to explore the effects of biotic and abiotic factors on the spatial patterns of sand-binding vegetation over 50 years. The spatial pattern of Haloxylon ammodendron changed gradually from a uniform distribution to an aggregated distribution, and the degree of patch fragmentation of H. ammodendron at the landscape scale gradually increased with the age of the sand-binding vegetation. The artificial sand-binding vegetation composed of H. ammodendron showed discontinuous change in which the system state reached a transition point after 30 years and changed to another state after 40 years. There were no significant correlations between the landscape indices and soil water content in the shallow layers (0–10 cm, 10–50 cm), while the soil water content in the 50–100 cm layers was significantly negatively correlated with the class area, percentage of landscape, largest patch index, percentage of like adjacencies and aggregation index and was positively correlated with the normalized landscape shape index. The soil water content in the 100–200 cm layers was positively correlated with the number of patches and patch density. Competition intensity at the individual level had a more significant effect on the area-type indices, and competition intensity at the population level had a more significant effect on the clustering-type indices. Finally, we found that the soil water content in deep layers and competition are the main drivers of the H. ammodendron spatial pattern change from a uniform pattern to a patchy pattern. These findings enrich theory on the self-organization of vegetation in arid and semiarid environments and have important theoretical and practical significance for the establishment and management of artificial vegetation in arid areas.

In order to study the multiple change points test of the mean of linear long memory, the ANOVA statistics was constructed and the limit distribution was proved under the hypothesis condition. The critical value, experience level and empirical power of the test statistics were obtained by Monte Carlo experiment simulation. The data results show that the method is effective. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is further verified by example analysis, and the analysis results show that the proposed method can be used for change point detection of actual data.

A new method for reconstructing the geological history of hydrocarbon accumulation is developed, which are constrained by U-Pb isotope age and clumped isotope (Δ47) temperature of host minerals of hydrocarbon-bearing inclusions. For constraining the time and depth of hydrocarbon accumulation by the laser in-situ U-Pb isotope age and clumped isotope temperature, there are two key steps: (1) Investigating feature, abundance and distribution patterns of liquid and gaseous hydrocarbon inclusions with optical microscopes. (2) Dating laser in-situ U-Pb isotope age and measuring clumped isotope temperature of the host minerals of hydrocarbon inclusions. These technologies have been applied for studying the stages of hydrocarbon accumulation in the Sinian Dengying gas reservoir in the paleo-uplift of the central Sichuan Basin. By dating the U-Pb isotope age and measuring the temperature of clumped isotope (Δ47) of the host minerals of hydrocarbon inclusions in dolomite, three stages of hydrocarbon accumulation were identified: (1) Late Silurian: the first stage of oil accumulation at (416±23) Ma. (2) Late Permian to Early Triassic: the second stage of oil accumulation between (248±27) Ma and (246.3±1.5) Ma. (3) Yanshan to Himalayan period: gas accumulation between (115±69) Ma and (41±10) Ma. The reconstructed hydrocarbon accumulation history of the Dengying gas reservoir in the paleo-uplift of the central Sichuan Basin is highly consistent with the tectonic-burial history, basin thermal history and hydrocarbon generation history, indicating that the new method is a reliable way for reconstructing the hydrocarbon accumulation history.

Because of the differences of hydrocarbon accumulation between in-source and out-of-source oil pools, the demand for source kitchen is different. Based on the establishment of source-to-reservoir correlation in the known conventional accumulations, and the characteristics of shale oil source kitchens as well, this paper discusses the differences of source kitchens for the formation of both conventional and shale oils. The formation of conventional oil pools is a process of hydrocarbons enriching from disperse state under the action of buoyancy, which enables most of the oil pools to be formed outside the source kitchens. The source rock does not necessarily have high abundance of organic matter, but has to have high efficiency and enough amount of hydrocarbon expulsion. The TOC threshold of source rocks for conventional oil accumulations is 0.5%, with the best TOC window ranging from 1% to 3%. The oil pools formed inside the source kitchens, mainly shale oil, are the retention of oil and gas in the source rock and there is no large-scale hydrocarbon migration and enrichment process happened, which requires better quality and bigger scale of source rocks. The threshold of TOC for medium to high maturity of shale oil is 2%, with the best range falling in 3%–5%. Medium to low mature shale oil resource has a TOC threshold of 6%, and the higher the better in particular. The most favorable kerogen for both high and low-mature shale oils is oil-prone type of I–II1. Carrying out source rock quality and classification evaluation and looking for large-scale and high-quality source rock enrichment areas are a scientific issue that must be paid attention to when exploration activity changes from out-of-source regions to in-source kitchen areas. The purpose is to provide theoretical guidance for the upcoming shale oil enrichment area selection, economic discovery and objective evaluation of resource potential.

Potential evapotranspiration (PET) is an important part of drought monitoring and evaluation. It is very important to analyze the climatic sensitive factors of PET to reveal the mechanism of hydrological responses to climate change. However, the local sensitivity method commonly used in previous studies is not suitable for nonlinear models and it is difficult to evaluate the interaction among meteorological factors. In this study, based on the monitoring data of 163 meteorological stations in the arid and semi-arid areas of northwest China from 1964 to 2018, we use the Penman-Monteith equation and Sobol global sensitivity to analyze the climatic sensitive factors of PET in the study area and discuss the climatic causes of the PET change. We also calculate the scPDSI and analyze the evolution characteristics of drought in northwest China. The results show that the annual average PET of the study area is 1157.8 mm with substantial spatial variations. The high-value areas are located in the eastern part of Xinjiang and the western part of Inner Mongolia, and the low-value areas are located in the southern part of Qinghai Province. The year 1993 was identified as a turning point, and the PET changed from a significant downward trend to a significant upward trend, which was more apparent in the summer in that year. From 1964 to 1993, the net radiation, wind speed, and relative humidity had a relatively greater impact on PET, while in the period 1994-2018, wind speed and relative humidity had a relatively greater impact on PET. The spatio-temporal distribution of scPDSI show that the drought in northern Xinjiang, central Qinghai and Gansu is becoming less severe, while the drought severity in the southwest part of the Yellow River Basin is becoming more severe, exacerbating regional water resources shortage and threatening ecological security.

The timely and accurate mapping of crops over large areas is essential for alleviating food crises and formulating agricultural policies. However, most existing classical crop mapping methods usually require the whole-year historical time-series data that cannot respond quickly to the current planting information, let alone for future prediction. To address this issue, we propose a novel spatial–temporal feature and deep integration strategy for crop growth pattern prediction and early mapping (STPM). Specifically, the STPM first learns crop spatial–temporal evolving patterns from historical data to generate future remote sensing images based on the current observations. Then, a robust crop type recognition model is applied by combining the current early data with the predicted images for early crop mapping. Compared to existing spatial–temporal prediction models, our proposed model integrates local, global, and temporal multi-modal features comprehensively. Not only does it achieve the capability to predict longer sequence lengths (exceeding 100 days), but it also demonstrates a significant improvement in prediction accuracy for each time step. In addition, this paper analyses the impact of feature dimensionality and initial data length on prediction and early crop mapping accuracy, demonstrating the necessity of multi-modal feature fusion for spatial–temporal prediction of high-resolution remote sensing data and the benefits of longer initial time-series (i.e., longer crop planting time) for crop identification. In general, our method has the potential to carry out early crop mapping on a large scale and provide information to formulate changes in agricultural conditions promptly.

The differences in organic matter abundance and rock composition between shale and mudstone determine the discrepancy of their contributions to the formation of conventional and shale oil/gas reservoirs. The evaluation criteria of source rocks are different in the future exploration in self-sourced petroleum systems. Shales are deposited in deep/semi-deep lacustrine, with low sedimentation rate and chemical depositions of various degrees, while mudstones are mostly formed in shallow lacustrine/lakeside, with high deposition rate and density flow characteristics. Three factors contribute to the enrichment of organic matter in shales, including the “fertility effect” caused by volcanic ash deposition and hydrothermal injection, excessive and over-speed growth of organisms promoted by radioactive materials, and deep-water anaerobic environment and low sedimentation rate to protect the accumulation of organic matter from dilution. Lamellations in shales are easy to be stripped into storage space, and acid water produced during hydrocarbon generation can dissolve some particles to generate new pores. The massive mudstones with high clay content are of poor matrix porosity. Shales with high total organic carbon, developed laminations, relatively good reservoir property, and high brittle mineral content, are the most favorable lithofacies for shale oil exploration and development. It is necessary to conduct investigation on the differences between shale and mudstone reservoirs, to identify resources distribution in shale and mudstone formations, determine the type and standard of “sweet-spot” evaluation parameters, optimize “sweet-spot areas/ sections”, and adopt effective development technologies, which is of great significance to objectively evaluate the total amount and economy of shale oil resources, as well as the scale of effective exploitation.

To construct a giant Sichuan gas province, it is in an urgent need of exploring new replacement areas with abundant natural gas resources and great exploration potential. In this paper, the formation conditions (e.g. source rock, reservoir and play) and the distribution laws of the deep-seated old giant marine carbonate oil/gas fields in China's Craton Basins were investigated systematically. Then, the accumulation and enrichment conditions of deep Sinian natural gas in the Sichuan Basin were analyzed. Finally, potential and favorable target zones of natural gas exploration in the Dengying Formation of Upper Sinian were evaluated. And the following research results were obtained. Firstly, the effectiveness and scale of source kitchens, reservoirs and reservoir–caprock assemblages and the proximity are the necessary conditions for the formation of deep-seated giant carbonate oil/gas fields, and paleo-uplifts, paleo-slopes and paleo-fault zones are the favorable areas of searching deep-seated giant carbonate oil/gas fields. Secondly, in the Sichuan Basin, three sets of high-quality source rocks are developed in the Neoproterozoic–Cambrian System, and their maturity of organic matter is still in the optimal window for cracking gas, so the gas generation scale is large. Thirdly, after the microbial carbonate rocks of Dengying Formation in the Sichuan Basin were reconstructed by constructive diagenesis, effective reservoirs are formed and distributed widely. Fourthly, owing to the integrated source rocks and cap rocks of Dengying Formation, the marginal platform and the intra platform have favorable conditions for proximal hydrocarbon accumulation. In conclusion, the deep Sinian in the Sichuan Basin has good conditions of hydrocarbon accumulation and it is an important replacement area of natural gas exploration. Paleo-uplifts and slopes in the central Sichuan Basin have been the favorable locations of natural gas accumulation for a long period. Large-scale exploration shall focus on four favorable areas, including the marginal platform zone in the fourth member of Dengying Formation, the marginal platform zone in the second member of Dengying Formation, the bioherm shoalbody of Dengying Formation intra platform in the paleo-uplifts and slopes of the central Sichuan Basin, and the bioherm shoalbody of Dengying Formation in the eastern Sichuan Basin.

Continental shale oil is a general term for liquid hydrocarbons and many kinds of organic matter in continental organic-rich shale series with vitrinite reflectance of more than 0.5% at buried depth of more than 300 m, and is an important type of source-rock oil and gas. Based on the evolution model of oil generation and expulsion in organic-rich shale series controlled by maturity, continental shale oil is divided into two types: medium-high maturity and medium-low maturity. (1) The continental shale series in China develop high-quality source rocks of freshwater and saltwater lacustrine facies, as well as multiple types of reservoirs, including clastic rocks, carbonate rocks, diamictite, tuff and shale, forming a number of “sweet sections” and “sweet areas” of continuous distribution inside or near source rocks, which have large scale resources. (2) Experimental analysis of organic rich shale samples shows that the shale samples with wavy and horizontal beddings have good storage conditions, and the horizontal permeability of shale is tens to hundreds of times of its vertical permeability, which is conducive to the lateral migration and accumulation of shale oil in the source rocks. (3) After evaluation, the geological resources of medium-high maturity shale oil are about 10 billion tons, which can be effectively developed by horizontal drilling and volumetric fracturing, and will be a practical field of oil exploration in recent years. Shale oil with medium and low maturity has huge resource potential, and technological recoverable resources of (70–90) billion tons, making it a strategic alternative resource of oil industry. However, economic development of this type of shale oil needs in-situ conversion technology breakthroughs. Continental shale oil is an inevitable choice in the process of Chinese continental petroleum exploration from “outside source” to “inside source”. Making breakthroughs in the core technologies such as “sweet area” evaluation and optimization, horizontal well volume fracturing and in-situ conversion technology and equipment is the key to realizing scale development of continental shale oil economically.

Continental shale oil has two types, low-medium maturity and medium-high maturity, and they are different in terms of resource environment, potential, production methods and technologies, and industrial evaluation criteria. In addition, continental shale oil is different from the shale oil and tight oil in the United States. Scientific definition of connotations of these resource types is of great significance for promoting the exploration of continental shale oil from “outside source” into “inside source” and making it a strategic replacement resource in the future. The connotations of low-medium maturity and medium-high maturity continental shale oils are made clear in this study. The former refers to the liquid hydrocarbons and multiple organic matter buried in the continental organic-rich shale strata with a burial depth deeper than 300 m and a Ro value less than 1.0%. The latter refers to the liquid hydrocarbons present in organic-rich shale intervals with a burial depth that in the “liquid window” range of the Tissot model and a Ro value greater than 1.0%. The geological characteristics, resource potential and economic evaluation criteria of different types of continental shale oil are systematically summarized. According to evaluation, the recoverable resources of in-situ conversion technology for shale oil with low-medium maturity in China is about (700–900)×108 t, and the economic recoverable resources under medium oil price condition ($ 60–65/bbl) is (150–200)×108 t. Shale oil with low-medium maturity guarantees the occurrence of the continental shale oil revolution. Pilot target areas should be optimized and core technical equipment should be developed according to the key parameters such as the cumulative production scale of well groups, the production scale, the preservation conditions, and the economics of exploitation. The geological resources of medium-high maturity shale oil are about 100×108 t, and the recoverable resources can to be determined after the daily production and cumulative production of a single well reach the economic threshold. Continental shale oil and tight oil are different in lithological combinations, facies distribution, and productivity evaluation criteria. The two can be independently distinguished and coexist according to different resource types. The determination of China's continental shale oil types, resources potentials, and tight oil boundary systems can provide a reference for the upcoming shale oil exploration and development practices and help the development of China's continental shale oil. Eriobotrya (Rosaceae) is an economically important genus with around 30 species. It is widely distributed in tropical and warm temperate regions of Asia, with most of its species in China, Myanmar, and Vietnam. However, Eriobotrya is often confused with the smaller genus Rhaphiolepis, and the phylogenetic relationships between the two genera are controversial. Here we present phylogenetic analyses of 38 newly generated Eriobotrya and Rhaphiolepis nrDNA together with 16 sequences of nrDNA and 28 sequences of ITS obtained from GenBank, representing 28 species of Eriobotrya and 12 species of Rhaphiolepis, in order to reconstruct highly supported relationships for the two genera. Contrary to previous research based on limited sampling, our results highlight the monophyly of Eriobotrya as well as Rhaphiolepis. The topology recovered here is consistent with key morphological synapomorphies such as the persistent sepals in Eriobotrya. Our findings show that increased sampling of taxa can provide a more robust phylogeny through reducing phylogenetic error and increasing overall phylogenetic accuracy.

Probiotics could improve our health by balancing the gut microbiota or interacting with intestinal mucosa directly. This randomized, single-blind, controlled intervention study purposed to explore the effects of Lactobacillus paracasei N1115 (LP N1115) on dyslipidaemia. A total of 109 dyslipidaemia subjects were recruited and divided randomly into two groups: 52 subjects in probiotics group and 57 subjects in placebo group. Blood samples were collected to test serum lipid parameters. Fecal samples were collected to analyze the gut microbiota by Illumina Miseq sequence machine. Administration of 4 × 1010 CFU/day LP N1115 for 12 weeks was found to improve dyslipidaemia profiles by lowering serum total cholesterol (TC) (P = 0.028) and apolipoprotein B (Apo-B) (P = 0.028). The Chang 7 member in Ordos Basin is an important shale oil exploration layer, with new shale-oil discoveries in recent years. The Chang 73 submember is rich in organic shale, which is the main source rock of shale oil in the Yanchang Formation. In order to clarify the lamina structure, composition, types, and distribution characteristics in Chang 73 submember and its influence on organic matter enrichment, a full coring well in Chang 73 submember located in deep-lacustrine facies is selected to obtain intensive systematic core samples. Core observation, thin section identification, X-ray fluorescence element analysis, X-diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscope, electron probe, rock pyrolysis, and other techniques are performed to systematically analyze the morphology, structure, thickness, mineral compositions, and organic matter content of the shale lamina in the Chang 73 submember. Five types of lamina are identified: silty felsic lamina (SF), tuffaceous lamina (TF), organic-rich clay lamina (ORC), organic-bearing clay lamina (OBC), and homogeneous clay lamina (HC), which are further subdivided into eight subtypes. The lamina types change greatly vertically in the Chang 73 submember, in which the lower part is mainly silty felsic lamina, organic-rich clay, and tuffaceous lamina, the middle part is mainly organic rich and organic clay lamina and organic-bearing clay lamina, and the upper part is mainly homogeneous clay lamina and a small amount of silty felsic organic-bearing clay lamina and organic-bearing clay lamina. Different laminae show various organic matter types, organic matter content (TOC), and organic matter occurrence states which can be divided into four occurrence types. The TOC in organic-rich clay lamina and part of homogeneous clay lamina is high, while that of silty felsic lamina is lower. The relationship between shale lamina and organic matter enrichment is established according to the correlation analysis of laminar characteristics, mineral content, and organic matter content. Among them, the organic-rich lamina is richest of TOC and is a favorable “sweet point” for shale oil exploration.

As the second largest producer of maize, China contributes 23% of global maize production and plays an important role in guaranteeing maize markets stability. In spite of its importance, there is no 30 m spatial resolution distribution map of maize for all of China. This study used a time-weighted dynamic time warping method to identify planting areas of maize by comparing the similarity of time series of a satellite-based vegetation index at each pixel with a standard time series derived from known maize fields and mapped maize distribution from 2016 to 2020 over 22 provinces accounting for more than 99% of the maize planting area in China. Based on 18800 field-surveyed pixels at 30-meter spatial resolution, the distribution map yields 76.15% and 81.59% of producer’s and user’s accuracies averaged over the entire investigated provinces, respectively. Municipality- and county-level census data also show a good performance in reproducing the spatial distribution of maize. This study provides an approach to mapping maize over large areas based on a small volume of field survey data.

Mangifera plants are tropical fruits that have high economic value and scientific utility. However, the chloroplast genome characteristics and phylogenetic relationships among Mangifera species remain unclear. In this work, we reconstructed maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian inference (BI) phylogenetic trees using 11 newly sequenced chloroplast genomes as well as six existing genomes obtained from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) database. The chloroplast genomes all had a typical quadripartite structure, with lengths ranging from 157,368 to 158,942 bp. The GC-content in the genomes ranged from 37.8% to 37.9%. We found conserved boundaries comprised of two inverted repeats (IRs), large single-copy (LSC) regions, and small single-copy (SSC) regions. Nucleotide polymorphism analysis revealed three hypervariable regions (ycf4-cemA, rps18-rpl20, and rpl32-ndhF) in the LSC and SSC regions, which could potentially be used as DNA barcodes for Mangifera species. According to our phylogenetic analysis, Mangifera plants were clustered into three clades. Among them, all five samples of M. indica formed a monophyletic group in Clade Ⅰ. Clade Ⅱ included seven Mangifera species and could be further divided into five subclades with 100% branch support values. Clade Ⅲ included two M. persiciforma samples that formed a monophyletic group. Taken together, these results provide a theoretical basis for species determination, in addition to shedding light on the evolution of Mangifera.

Non-photosynthetic vegetation (NPV) is a vital component of terrestrial ecosystems and an important indicator of grassland degradation, therefore, it is of great significance to realize its accurate evaluation. Here, we analyzed spectral characteristics of NPV of different biomass types in undisturbed vegetation (herb, subshrub and shrub), and established relationship models among dead fuel index (DFI), cellulose absorption index (CAI) and fractional cover of NPV (fNPV) based on ground hyperspectral data; then, fNPV of four grassland types were evaluated based on the models.
