Abstract In clinical practice, renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is a common cause of acute kidney injury (AKI), often leading to acute renal failure or end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The current understanding of renal IRI mechanisms remains unclear, and effective therapeutic strategies and clear targets are lacking. Therefore, the need to find explicit and effective ways to reduce renal IRI remains a scientific challenge. The current study explored pyroptosis, a type of inflammation-regulated programmed cell death, and the role of Gasdermins E (GSDME)-mediated pyroptosis, mitochondrial damage, and inflammation in renal IRI. The analysis of human samples showed that the expression levels of GSDME in normal human renal tissues were higher than those of GSDMD. Moreover, our study demonstrated that GSDME played an important role in mediating pyroptosis, inflammation, and mitochondrial damage in renal IRI. Subsequently, GSDME-N accumulated in the mitochondrial membrane, leading to mitochondrial damage and activation of caspase3, which generated a feed-forward loop of self-amplification injury. However, GSDME knockout resulted in the amelioration of renal IRI. Moreover, the current study found that the transcription factor CHOP was activated much earlier in renal IRI. Inhibition of BCL-2 by CHOP leaded to casapse3 activation, resulting in mitochondrial damage and apoptosis; not only that, but CHOP positively regulated GSDME thereby causing pyroptosis. Therefore, this study explored the transcriptional mechanisms of GSDME during IRI development and the important role of CHOP/Caspase3/GSDME mechanistic axis in regulating pyroptosis in renal IRI. This axis might serve as a potential therapeutic target.

Additive manufactured bimetallic structures provide site-specific functions by joining two metallic materials in the designed area, offering customized solutions for biomedical and engineering applications. However, cracking, delamination, or cross-contamination frequently occurs at the joint between two dissimilar metallic materials due to their different thermal properties. In the paper, porous bimetallic structures made of biomedical materials (Fe, Ti6Al4V, and Inconel 718) for bone implants are fabricated via direct ink writing (DIW) with a dual syringe system. After subsequent heat treatment, the original shapes of the bimetallic structures are well-preserved, and the shrinkages of the two materials are equalized by adjusting the sintering temperature. All joints are free of cracks and delamination, and the material deposition sequence has no impact on them, according to microstructural analyses of the interface. The pores created by binder pyrolysis and metallic powder sintering are necessary for bone growth, cell migration, body fluid flow, etc. The Fe–Ti6Al4V and Fe-Inconel 718 bimetallic structures have better mechanical properties than the Fe structures and can perform multiple functions that are challenging for monometallic implants.

Existing research suggested 300∼600 μm as the optimal pore size range for metallic bone implants. The human bones, however, have numerous pores smaller than 300 μm for bone ingrowth, cell growth and migration, fluid flow, and so forth. The bone implant with such small-sized pores has been rarely manufactured and its property is unclear. In the paper, biodegradable Fe scaffolds of different pore sizes (50 μm, 100 μm, 150 μm, 200 μm, and 300 μm) were fabricated by direct ink writing (DIW) with subsequent sintering. The interconnected pores of all scaffolds are highly precise and have no residual powders. The in-vitro degradation and compression tests were conducted on the scaffolds to evaluate the effect of pore size on degradation and mechanical behaviors, respectively. The results indicate that a decrease in pore size leads to an increase in degradation rate, from 0.0423 ± 0.0014 to 0.0433 ± 0.0035 mm/year, with the exception of the 50 μm scaffolds which exhibit the lowest value of 0.0052 ± 0.0018 mm/year due to clogging by degradation products; meanwhile, both elastic modulus and yield strength rise from 344.8 ± 18.6 MPa to 625.0 ± 52.5 MPa and from 9.5 ± 0.9 MPa to 15.1 ± 0.8 MPa, respectively. The pore size of 100 μm shows the most significant potential for use in Fe bone implants regarding its good degradation and mechanical behaviors. Our work provides new insight into the preferable pore size of metallic bone implants produced by additive manufacturing.

The dome shaped structures of natural organisms can provide design inspiration for impact resistant structural materials. Most of the existing biomimetic dome shaped impact resistant materials are directly formed using 3D printing technology, and the samples cannot dynamically adjust the impact resistance properties in the various applications. Herein, 4D printing of fused filament fabrication is employed to form flat structures with different structural patterns via programming the printing process parameters, which can be deformed into biomimetic dome structures with dynamic thermal stimulation treatment. The thermal stimulation treatment can drive the dynamic transformation of 2D planar structures into 3D structures, and the higher the thermal stimulation temperature, the greater the degree of eminence and the denser the structure under the same experimental conditions. The thermal stimulation temperature and the mechanical properties of the structural samples show a certain positive correlation. In addition, different design structural patterns have different compressive mechanical properties. The more the number of circular units, the more obvious the energy absorption characteristics. The impact-resistant biomimetic structures can be applied to the surface strengthening and cushioning of various weapons, vehicles, heavy equipment, and launch structure.

In recent years, breakthroughs in bioinformatics have been made with the discovery of many functionally significant non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs). The discovery of these ncRNAs has further demonstrated the multi-level characteristics of intracellular gene expression regulation, which plays an important role in assisting diagnosis, guiding clinical drug use and determining prognosis in the treatment process of various diseases. microRNAs (miRNAs), long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), and circular RNAs (circRNAs) are the three major types of ncRNAs that interact with each other. Studies have shown that lncRNAs and circRNAs can sponge miRNAs, thereby influencing normal physiological processes and regulating mRNA expression and, thus, the physiological state of cells. This paper summarizes the mechanism of action and research progress of the three ncRNA and seven types of modalities. This summary is intended to provide new ideas for diagnosing and treating diseases and researching and developing new drugs.

Abstract 4D printing of metallic shape‐morphing systems can be applied in many fields, including aerospace, smart manufacturing, naval equipment, and biomedical engineering. The existing forming materials for metallic 4D printing are still very limited except shape memory alloys. Herein, a 4D printing method to endow non‐shape‐memory metallic materials with active properties is presented, which could overcome the shape‐forming limitation of traditional material processing technologies. The thermal stress spatial control of 316L stainless steel forming parts is achieved by programming the processing parameters during a laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) process. The printed parts can realize the shape changing of selected areas during or after forming process owing to stress release generated. It is demonstrated that complex metallic shape‐morphing structures can be manufactured by this method. The principles of printing parameters programmed and thermal stress pre‐set are also applicable to other thermoforming materials and additive manufacturing processes, which can expand not only the materials used for 4D printing but also the applications of 4D printing technologies.

The manufacturing process for many large components of machines leads to a difference in their properties and performances based on changes in location. Functionally graded materials can meet these requirements and address the issue of generation and expansion of interface cracks. Ni204–dr60 gradient coatings were successfully fabricated using laser direct energy deposition (LDED). Microstructure mechanism evolution and microhardness of the gradient coating were comprehensively investigated. The change in the precipitated phase at the grain boundary and the intergranular zones resulted in a change in microstructural characteristics and also affected the microhardness distribution. The reinforced phase of the Ni204 → dr60 gradient zone from Ni204 to dr60 gradually precipitated and was rich in Mo and Nb phase, lath-shaped CrCx phase, network-shaped CrCx phase, block shape (Ni, Si) (C, B) phase, block CrCx phase, and block Cr (B, C) phase. The gradient coating thus acts as a potential candidate to effectively solve the problem of crack generation at the interface of dr60 and the substrate.

Depression is a common neuropsychiatric disorder with long-term recurrent depressed mood, pain and despair, pessimism and anxiety, and even suicidal tendencies as the main symptoms. Depression usually induces or aggravates the development of other related diseases, such as sleep disorders and endocrine disorders. In today’s society, the incidence of depression is increasing worldwide, and its pathogenesis is complex and generally believed to be related to genetic, psychological, environmental, and biological factors. Current studies have shown the key role of glial cells in the development of depression, and it is noteworthy that some recent evidence suggests that the development of depression may be closely related to viral infections, such as SARS-CoV-2, BoDV-1, ZIKV, HIV, and HHV6, which infect the organism and cause some degree of glial cells, such as astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and microglia. This can affect the transmission of related proteins, neurotransmitters, and cytokines, which in turn leads to neuroinflammation and depression. Based on the close relationship between viruses and depression, this paper provides an in-depth analysis of the new mechanism of virus-induced depression, which is expected to provide a new perspective on the mechanism of depression and a new idea for the diagnosis of depression in the future.

Additive manufacturing of metallic glass has attracted great attentions from researchers owing to the prospect of free-form fabricating high-performance bulk amorphous alloy parts. The characteristics of additive manufacturing from points to tracks, tracks to layers, and layers to parts are suitable for forming complex bulk metallic glass parts, which are difficult to achieve with other processing technologies. Herein, the forming principles used in metallic glass additive manufacturing are reviewed, with an emphasis on the manufacturing processes, material systems, forming part properties and potential applications. The properties of forming bulk metallic glass via selective laser melting, laser-directed energy deposition, and laser foil printing technologies are summarized. In addition, certain newly explored metallic glass additive manufacturing technologies, such as fused filament fabrication, ultrasonic consolidation, thermal spraying, and pneumatic injection, are briefly introduced. Finally, the trends in metallic glass additive manufacturing and perspectives for this emerging field are discussed.

Background: The incidence of respiratory diseases and the respiratory disease mortality rate have increased in recent years. Recent studies have shown that long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) MALAT1 is involved in various respiratory diseases. In vascular endothelial and cancer cells, MALAT1 expression triggers various changes such as proinflammatory cytokine expression, cancer cell proliferation and metastasis, and increased endothelial cell permeability.Methods: In this review, we performed a relative concentration index (RCI) analysis of the lncRNA database to assess differences in MALAT1 expression in different cell lines and at different locations in the same cell, and summarize the molecular mechanisms of MALAT1 in the pathophysiology of respiratory diseases and its potential therapeutic application in these conditions.Results: MALAT1 plays an important regulatory role in lncRNA with a wide range of effects in respiratory diseases. The available evidence shows that MALAT1 plays an important role in the regulation of multiple respiratory diseases.Conclusion: MALAT1 is an important regulatory biomarker for respiratory disease. Targeting the regulation MALAT1 could have important applications for the future treatment of respiratory diseases.

LncRNAs are a group of non-coding RNA transcripts with lengths of over 200 nucleotides and can interact with DNA, RNA, and proteins to regulate gene expression of malignant tumors in human tissues. LncRNAs participate in vital processes, such as chromosomal nuclear transport in the cancerous site of human tissue, activation, and the regulation of proto-oncogenes, the differentiation of immune cells, and the regulation of the cellular immune system. The lncRNA metastasis-associated lung cancer transcript 1 (MALAT1) is reportedly involved in the occurrence and development of many cancers and serves as a biomarker and therapeutic target. These findings highlight its promising role in cancer treatment. In this article, we comprehensively summarized the structure and functions of lncRNA, notably the discoveries of lncRNA-MALAT1 in different cancers, the action mechanisms, and the ongoing research on new drug development. We believe our review would serve as a basis for further research on the pathological mechanism of lncRNA-MALAT1 in cancer and provide evidence and novel insights into its application in clinical diagnoses and treatments.

The aim of this study was to elucidate the correlation between m6A modification and the tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) in prostate cancer (PCa) and to identify the m6A regulation patterns suitable for immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) therapy. We evaluated the m6A regulation patterns of PCa based on 24 m6A regulators and correlated these modification patterns with TIME characteristics. Three distinct m6A regulation patterns were determined in PCa. The m6A regulators cluster with the best prognosis had significantly increased METTL14 and ZC3H13 expression and was characterized by low mutation rate, tumor heterogeneity, and neoantigens. The m6A regulators cluster with a poor prognosis had markedly high KIAA1429 and HNRNPA2B1 expression and was characterized by high intratumor heterogeneity and Th2 cell infiltration, while low Th17 cell infiltration and Macrophages M1/M2. The m6Ascore was constructed to quantify the m6A modification pattern of individual PCa patients based on m6A-associated genes. We found that the low-m6Ascore group with poor prognosis had a higher immunotherapeutic response rate than the high-m6Ascore group. The low-m6Ascore group was more likely to benefit from ICIs therapy. This study was determined that immunotherapy is more effective in low-m6Ascore PCa patients with poor prognosis.

Fused filament fabrication (FFF) additive manufacturing technology has the advantages of being low cost, having a simple operation, using wide types of molding materials, and producing less pollution during the printing process. However, the mechanical properties of the molded sample are unsatisfactory due to the limited bonding force between the filaments during the forming process, which limits its further development and application in the engineering field. Herein, the hybrid additive manufacturing technology for heterogeneous materials based on the ultrasonic-assisted enhanced fused filament fabrication technology was proposed. The mechanism of ultrasonic vibration on the strengthening of FFF samples was explored. The influence mechanisms of bonding time and ultrasonic strengthening times, ultrasonic strengthening and static load compression on the strengthening of mechanical properties of the sample were investigated. The effects of the thickness and printing angle of the FFF samples on the ultrasonic-enhanced mechanical properties were explored. The tensile strength of the one-time ultrasonic-strengthened sample is up to 43.43 MPa, which is 16.12% higher than that of the original. The maximum bending strength of the four-time ultrasonic-strengthened sample is 73.38 MPa, which is 78.98% higher than that of the original. Ultrasonic strengthening not only re-fused the pores inside the sample, but also improved the bond strength between the rasters. With the increase in the thickness of the sample, the increase rate of ultrasonic to the strength of the sample decreased significantly. The effects of ultrasound on the interlayer adhesion of samples with various printing angles were different. Based on the systematic research on the influence mechanism of ultrasonic process parameters and molding process parameters on the strengthening of FFF, a molding method for additively manufacturing heterogeneous material parts while strengthening the mechanical properties of FFF samples was proposed, and the influence mechanisms of the molding process on the mechanical properties and shape memory properties of the sample were explored, which can broaden the application of FFF technology in the engineering field.

Spider silks exhibit excellent mechanical properties and have promising application prospects in engineering fields. Because natural spider silk fibers cannot be manufactured on a large scale, researchers have attempted to fabricate bio-inspired spider silks. However, the fabrication of bio-inspired spider silks with dynamically tunable mechanical properties and stimulation–response characteristics remains a challenge. Herein, the 4D printing of shape memory polyurethane is employed to produce dynamic bio-inspired spider silks. The bio-inspired spider silks have two types of energy-absorbing units that can be adjusted, one by means of 4D printing with predefined nodes, and the other through different stimulation methods to make the bio-inspired spider silks contract and undergo spiral deformation. The shape morphing behaviors of bio-inspired spider silks are programmed via pre-stress assemblies enabled by 4D printing. The energy-absorbing units of bio-inspired spider silks can be dynamically adjusted owing to stress release generated with the stimuli of temperature or humidity. Therefore, the mechanical properties of bio-inspired spider silks can be controlled to change dynamically. This can further help in developing applications of bio-inspired spider silks in engineering fields with dynamic changes of environment.

Hydrogel has become a commonly used material for 3D and 4D printing due to its favorable biocompatibility and low cost. Additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, was originally referred to as rapid prototyping manufacturing. Variable-feature rapid prototyping technology, also known as 4D printing, is a combination of materials, mathematics, and additives. This study constitutes a literature review to address hydrogel-based additive manufacturing technologies, introducing the characteristics of commonly used 3D printing hydrogel methods, such as direct ink writing, fused deposition modeling, and stereolithography. With this review, we also investigated the stimulus types, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of various stimulus-responsive hydrogels in smart hydrogels; non-responsive hydrogels; and various applications of additive manufacturing hydrogels, such as neural catheter preparation and drug delivery. The opportunities, challenges, and future prospects of hydrogel additive manufacturing technologies are discussed.

Fused deposition modeling is the most widely used 3D-printing technology, with the advantage of being an accessible forming process. However, the poor mechanical properties of the formed parts limit its application in engineering. Herein, a new ultrasonic-assisted fused deposition modeling 3D-printing method was proposed to improve the mechanical properties of the formed parts. The effects of ultrasonic vibration substrate process parameters and printing process parameters on the tensile and bending properties of formed samples were studied. The tensile strength and bending strength of the samples printed with a 12 μm ultrasonic amplitude can be increased by 13.2% and 12.6%, respectively, compared with those printed without ultrasonic vibration. The influence mechanism of ultrasonic vibration on mechanical properties was studied through microscopic characterization and in situ infrared monitoring experiments. During the printing process, increasing the ultrasonic vibration and temperature employed via the ultrasonic substrate can reduce the pore defects inside the sample. The mechanical properties of FDM-formed samples can be controlled by adjusting ultrasonic-assisted process parameters, which can broaden the application of 3D printing.

Abstract 3D‐printing technology is a promising approach for rapidly and precisely manufacturing zeolite adsorbents with desirable configurations. However, the trade‐off among mechanical stability, adsorption capacity, and diffusion kinetics remains an elusive challenge for the practical application of 3D‐printed zeolites. Herein, a facile “3D printing and zeolite soldering” strategy is developed to construct mechanically robust binder‐free zeolite monoliths (ZM‐BF) with hierarchical structures, which can act as a superior configuration for CO2 capture. Halloysite nanotubes are employed as printing ink additives, which serve as both reinforcing materials and precursor materials for integrating ZM‐BF by ultrastrong interfacial “zeolite‐bonds” subjected to hydrothermal treatment. ZM‐BF exhibits outstanding mechanical properties with robust compressive strength up to 5.24 MPa, higher than most of the reported structured zeolites with binders. The equilibrium CO2 uptake of ZM‐BF reaches up to 5.58 mmol g−1 (298 K, 1 bar), which is the highest among all reported 3D‐printed CO2 adsorbents. Strikingly, the dynamic adsorption breakthrough tests demonstrate the superiority of ZM‐BF over commercial benchmark zeolites for flue gas purification and natural gas and biogas upgrading. This work introduces a facile strategy for designing and fabricating high‐performance hierarchically structured zeolite adsorbents and even catalysts for practical applications.

Background/Aims: The interactions between calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM) crystals and renal tubular epithelial cells are important for renal stone formation but still unclear. This study aimed to investigate changes of epithelial cell phenotype after COM attachment and whether L-carnitine could protect cells against subsequent COM crystals adhesion. Methods: Cultured MDCK cells were employed and E-cadherin and Vimentin were used as markers to estimate the differentiate state. AlexaFluor-488-tagged COM crystals were used in crystals adhesion experiment to distinguish from the previous COM attachment, and adhesive crystals were counted under fluorescence microscope, which were also dissolved and the calcium concentration was assessed by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Results: Dedifferentiated MDCK cells induced by transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1) shown higher affinity to COM crystals. After exposure to COM for 48 hours, cell dedifferentiation were observed and more subsequent COM crystals could bind onto, mediated by Akt/GSK-3β/Snail signaling. L-carnitine attenuated this signaling, resulted in inhibition of cell dedifferentiation and reduction of subsequent COM crystals adhesion. Conclusions: COM attachment promotes subsequent COM crystals adhesion, by inducing cell dedifferentiation via Akt/GSK-3β/Snail signaling. L-carnitine partially abolishes cell dedifferentiation and resists COM crystals adhesion. L-carnitine, may be used as a potential therapeutic strategy against recurrence of urolithiasis.

Pore defects have an important effect on the mechanical properties of graphene reinforced aluminum nanocomposites. The simulation study found that the pores affect the stress distribution in the matrix of the composite. Along the stretching direction, the larger stress appears on both sides of the pore, which is the source of potential cracks. It results in a sharp decrease in the mechanical properties of the composite. The higher the porosity, the greater the tendency of pore aggregation, and the risk of material failure is higher. The stress distribution in the matrix becomes more uneven as the pore size increases, and the large strain area around the pores also increases. Composites with circular pores have a higher strength than other irregularly shaped pores. The failure mode might be pore cracking, while composites with other shape pores are more prone to interface detachment. The simulation value of the stress-strain of the composite material is in good agreement with the experimental value, but the finite element simulation value is larger than the experimental value.

Fused deposition modeling (FDM) is a rapidly growing 3D printing technology. However, printing materials are restricted to acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) or poly (lactic acid) (PLA) in most Fused deposition modeling (FDM) equipment. Here, we report on a new high-performance printing material, polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK), which could surmount these shortcomings. This paper is devoted to studying the influence of layer thickness and raster angle on the mechanical properties of 3D-printed PEEK. Samples with three different layer thicknesses (200, 300 and 400 μm) and raster angles (0°, 30° and 45°) were built using a polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) 3D printing system and their tensile, compressive and bending strengths were tested. The optimal mechanical properties of polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) samples were found at a layer thickness of 300 μm and a raster angle of 0°. To evaluate the printing performance of polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) samples, a comparison was made between the mechanical properties of 3D-printed polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) parts. The results suggest that the average tensile strengths of polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) parts were 108% higher than those for acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), and compressive strengths were 114% and bending strengths were 115%. However, the modulus of elasticity for both materials was similar. These results indicate that the mechanical properties of 3D-printed polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) are superior to 3D-printed ABS.

Ultrasonic vibrations were applied to weld Ni-based metallic glass ribbons with Al and Cu ribbons to manufacture high-performance metallic glass and crystalline metal composites with accumulating formation characteristics. The effects of ultrasonic vibration energy on the interfaces of the composite samples were studied. The ultrasonic vibrations enabled solid-state bonding of metallic glass and crystalline metals. No intermetallic compound formed at the interfaces, and the metallic glass did not crystallize. The hardness and modulus of the composites were between the respective values of the metallic glass and the crystalline metals. The ultrasonic bonding additive manufacturing can combine the properties of metallic glass and crystalline metals and broaden the application fields of metallic materials.

Biodegradable stents offer the potential to reduce the in-stent restenosis by providing support long enough for the vessel to heal. The polylactic acid (PLA) vascular stents with negative Poisson’s ratio (NPR) structure were manufactured by fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing in this study. The effects of stent diameter, wall thickness and geometric parameters of arrowhead NPR structure on radial compressive property of 3D-printed PLA vascular stent were studied. The results showed that the decrease of stent diameter, the increase of wall thickness and the increase of the surface coverage could enhance the radial force (per unit length) of PLA stent. The radial and longitudinal size of PLA stent with NPR structure decreased simultaneously when the stent was crimped under deformation temperature. The PLA stent could expand in both radial and longitudinal direction under recovery temperature. When the deformation temperature and recovery temperature were both 65 °C, the diameter recovery ratio of stent was more than 95% and the maximum could reach 98%. The length recovery ratio was above 97%. This indicated the feasibility of utilizing the shape memory effect (SME) of PLA to realize the expansion of 3D-printed PLA vascular stent under temperature excitation.

Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) is a high-performance semi-crystalline thermoplastic polymer that is widely used in the automotive, electronics, and aerospace industries, as well as other fields. However, PPS introduces several challenges in fused deposition modeling owing to its inherent properties of crystallization and thermal crosslinking. The present study demonstrates the effects of the thermal processing and heat treatment conditions on the accuracy and mechanical properties of PPS samples three-dimensionally printed through fused deposition modeling. By measuring the degree of crystallinity and thermal crosslinking of three-dimensionally printed PPS samples, we found that the thermal history affects the three-dimensionally printed PPS properties. Results show that the accuracy of three-dimensionally printed PPS samples can be improved by means of air-forced cooling in fused deposition modeling. The balance between mechanical strength and ductility was regulated by altering the heat treatment conditions. This approach is applicable to eliminating the warpage of semi-crystalline polymer in three-dimensional printing (not only for PPS) and provides a method of improving the mechanical properties of three-dimensionally printed PPS samples.

Fe-based metallic glasses are amorphous alloys with high strength, high hardness, and excellent corrosion resistance; however, the immaturity of processing methods has prevented their wide application in industrial production. Fe-based metallic glass parts were manufactured employing pneumatic injection additive manufacturing in this study. An evenly dispersed and stable Fe-based metallic glass powder slurry with a solids content of 50% was prepared firstly. Then the Fe-based metallic glass parts were printed. The printed parts were dried, debinded, and sintered for strengthening. The deformations of the printed parts and sintered parts relative to the original model were then analyzed by a 3D scanning reconstruction method. The slightly average bulging and sunken deformation of the printed parts and sintered parts confirmed the good printing accuracy of the pneumatic injection manufacture system. The effects of the sintering temperature and holding time on the properties of the sintered parts were studied. For a sintering temperature of 580 °C and holding time of 1 h, the surface quality of the sintered parts was better. The sintering of 3D-printed Fe-based metallic glass parts was preliminarily realized in this study, and the feasibility of preparing Fe-based metallic glass using pneumatic injection additive manufacture was verified.

Fused deposition modeling 3D printing has become the most widely used additive manufacturing technology because of its low manufacturing cost and simple manufacturing process. However, the mechanical properties of the 3D printing parts are not satisfactory. Certain pressure and ultrasonic vibration were applied to 3D printed samples to study the effect on the mechanical properties of 3D printed non-crystalline and semi-crystalline polymers. The tensile strength of the semi-crystalline polymer polylactic acid was increased by 22.83% and the bending strength was increased by 49.05%, which were almost twice the percentage increase in the tensile strength and five times the percentage increase in the bending strength of the non-crystalline polymer acrylonitrile butadiene styrene with ultrasonic strengthening. The dynamic mechanical properties of the non-crystalline and semi-crystalline polymers were both improved after ultrasonic enhancement. Employing ultrasonic energy can significantly improve the mechanical properties of samples without modifying the 3D printed material or adjusting the forming process parameters.

The success of the 3D-printing process depends upon the proper selection of process parameters. However, the majority of current related studies focus on the influence of process parameters on the mechanical properties of the parts. The influence of process parameters on the shape-memory effect has been little studied. This study used the orthogonal experimental design method to evaluate the influence of the layer thickness H, raster angle θ, deformation temperature Td and recovery temperature Tr on the shape-recovery ratio Rr and maximum shape-recovery rate Vm of 3D-printed polylactic acid (PLA). The order and contribution of every experimental factor on the target index were determined by range analysis and ANOVA, respectively. The experimental results indicated that the recovery temperature exerted the greatest effect with a variance ratio of 416.10, whereas the layer thickness exerted the smallest effect on the shape-recovery ratio with a variance ratio of 4.902. The recovery temperature exerted the most significant effect on the maximum shape-recovery rate with the highest variance ratio of 1049.50, whereas the raster angle exerted the minimum effect with a variance ratio of 27.163. The results showed that the shape-memory effect of 3D-printed PLA parts depended strongly on recovery temperature, and depended more weakly on the deformation temperature and 3D-printing parameters.
