We present a Holocene record of pyrolytic nitrogen (N) composition from the Jinchuan peat bog within the Longgang Volcanic Field (LVF), NE China. Based on pyrolysis gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) analysis, N-compounds including acetamide, NHetero and NAro have been identified and quantified. Aromatic N-compounds (NAro, benzonitrile and benzamide) are mainly derived from phytoplankton and higher plants, and are resistant to microbial degradation. We propose ‘NHetero/NAro’ as a proxy based on microbial degradation, and has lower values between 10 and 5.8 ka BP, and higher values during the late Holocene. We suggest that temperature is main factor for NHetero/NAro, and sedimentary facies changed from floodplain to peat deposition, variation of effective precipitaion and pH value have limited influence on the performance of the proxy in Jinchuan. Low NHetero/NAro levels, combined with high levels of non-protein derived acetamide, indicate warmer conditions, and vice versa. NHetero/NAro is sensitive to temperature change, and follows a similar pattern to those of previous paleo-temperature time series derived from br-GDGT and long chain alkenones in this region. This Spectral analysis of the NHetero/NAro time series reveals significant periodicities of 103–105, 145 and 482–506 years, suggesting strong influences of solar radiation and monsoon intensity on temperature variations in NE China during the Holocene.

The Hulun Buir sandy land in northern China is located at the northern limit region of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) and is therefore sensitive to the extension of the front of the rainfall belt. Here we report an n-alkane and compound-specific carbon isotope record from the Holocene sediments of Lake Yiheshariwusu in the middle of the Hulun Buir sandy land. The sediments contain a suite of n-alkanes with a strong odd over even carbon number predominance, with the maximum contribution from nC31, which is a typical distribution in grassland regions. The low temperatures in this cold region greatly limit the growth of C4 plants and thus the long-chain n-alkanes in lake sediments are mainly derived from leaf wax lipids of C3 plants growing within the sandy land. In this C3-vegetation-dominated region, the δ13C27–33 value (weighted carbon isotope values of nC27– nC33) are regulated mainly by the physiological and biochemical responses of plants to water stress and are therefore interpreted as a proxy of effective precipitation or humidity. The δ13C27–33 time series shows a trend of gradually decreasing values that suggests an increase in effective precipitation since 8.5 ka (1 ka = 1000 cal yr BP). Relative droughts occurred during the intervals of 6.3–5.5, 4.1–3.6 ka, and during the last 200 years. In addition, the δ13C27–33 time series and comparable paleoenvironmental records from neighboring sites suggest opposite trends of summer monsoon rainfall between northeastern and southeastern China. We suggest that a coupled process between low and high latitudes (the western Pacific Subtropical High and the Okhotsk High) may have played a fundamental role in regulating the shift of the frontal rainfall belt and monsoon rainfall distribution in eastern China during the Holocene.

The geometrical and mechanical properties of joints play an important role in the determination of shear strength of jointed rocks. In this research, we propose a nonlinear model to estimate the shear strength of jointed rocks with unfilled saw-tooth triangular asperities using the basic friction angle φb, the tensile strength of intact rock σt, and the joint inclination angle i under various normal stress σn conditions. In order to propose the new shear strength model, firstly, a rock database of saw-tooth jointed rocks containing experimental and numerical data is established. The experimental data are collected from publications. The numerical data are generated by the particle flow code (PFC) model. Then, the genetic programming (GP) is used to analyze the database to propose the GP shear strength model. The prediction performance of the proposed GP model is tested and compared with that of the Patton model and the Ladanyi and Archambault (LA) model. Comparison results show that the proposed GP model has the best prediction performance compared with the Patton model and the LA model. The proposed GP model can capture the nonlinear shear strength behavior of saw-tooth jointed rocks and its input parameters can be easily estimated.

High-resolution temperature records spanning the last deglaciation from low latitudes are scarce; however, they are important for understanding the rapid propagation of abrupt climate events throughout the Northern Hemisphere and the tropics. Here, we present a branched GDGTs-based temperature reconstruction from the sediments of Maar Lake Huguangyan in tropical China. The record reveals that the mean temperature during the Oldest Dryas was 17.8 °C, which was followed by a two-step increase of 2-3 °C to the Bolling-Allerod, a decrease to 19.8 °C during the Younger Dryas, and a rapid warming at the onset of the Holocene. The Oldest Dryas was about 2 °C warmer than the Younger Dryas. The reconstructed temperature was weighted towards the wintertime since the lake is monomictic and the mixing process in winter supplies nutrients from the lake bottom to the entire water column, greatly promoting biological productivity. In addition, the winter-biased temperature changes observed in the study are more distinctive than the summer-biased temperature records from extra-tropical regions of East Asia. This implies that the temperature decreases during abrupt climatic events were mainly a winter phenomenon. Within the limits of the dating uncertainties, the broadly similar pattern of winter-weighted temperature change observed in both tropical Lake Huguangyan and in Greenland ice cores indicates the occurrence of tightly-coupled interactions between high latitude ice sheets and land areas in the tropics. We suggest that the winter monsoon (especially cold surges) could play an important role in the rapid transmission of the temperature signal from the Arctic to the tropics.

We present an n-alkane and compound-specific carbon isotope record of the past 9 ka from the annually laminated sedimentary sequence of Lake Xiaolongwan, northeastern China. The n-alkane distribution suggests that Lake Xiaolongwan has undergone a shift from an oligotrophic state with low algal production and little emergent/submerged macrophytes in the early Holocene, to a eutrophic state with high algal production and abundant emergent/submerged macrophytes since the middle Holocene. The pattern of variation observed in the biomarker proxies ACL (the n-alkane average chain length), Paq (aquatic macrophyte versus aquatic macrophyte and terrestrial plant ratio), and LPTP (lake productivity/ terrigenous organic production) is throughout the record similar to that of the total organic carbon. The variation of compound-specific carbon isotopic values in the middle- and short-chain alkanes was mainly regulated by lake productivity and the accumulating organic pool through time. In this forested region, where the vegetation is dominated by C 3 plants, the long-chain n-alkanes (C27eC31) are predominantly derived from leaf wax lipids. The compound-specific d 13 C27e31 value is sensitive to effective precipitation, and therefore represents a useful indicator of regional monsoonal precipitation. Spectral analysis on the d 13 C27e31 time series reveals significant periodicities of 87e89, 205e212, 1020e1050 and 1750e2041 years. On the centennial timescale, the quasi-periodicities around 88 and 210 years suggest a strong link between solar activity and monsoon rainfall. The millennial monsoon cycle in northeastern China is associated with sea surface temperature (SST) variations in two active centers of the summer monsoon, the western Pacific Subtropical High (WPSH) and the Okhotsk High. Increasing SST in the subtropical sea may cause a northwards shift of the WPSH, which extends the monsoon rain band (Meiyu) to northeastern China, and thus increasing rainfall in that region. Meanwhile, decreasing SST in the Okhotsk Sea may strengthen the Okhotsk high, bringing more moisture into northeastern China. We suggest that the Pacific Ocean is a main regulator for summer monsoon rainfall in northeastern China at present and at different time scales during the Holocene.

Synchrotron radiation X-ray fluorescence measurement provides a nondestructive in situ analysis of elements. We present a high-resolution minor element dataset covering the past 1300 years from the varved sediments in Lake Xiaolongwan. The variations of lithogenic elements (Rb, Sr, Ti, Zn, As and Fe) in the lake sediment show distinct decadal to centennial features during the past 1300 years. The Medieval Warm Period has a low value of lithogenic elements. In contrast, the Little Ice Age may be a period with stronger physical weathering and a higher value of lithogenic elements. Principal components analysis of our geochemical dataset suggests a link between high Rb/Sr ratio and Zr abundance in the sediment that could be related with both chemical weathering process and dust input. The variations of biogenic bromine (factor-3) show a pattern similar to the decadal drought index in Korea. Wet conditions favor bromine accumulation in lake sediment because high precipitation may transport more bromine from forest soil and increase plankton production in the lake. Spectral analysis of factor-3 yields notable periodicities of 2.6, 3.5, 53-55, 87-89 and 105-110 years, implying that precipitation variability for the past 1400 years could be associated with El Nino-Southern Oscillation and solar activity.

Annually laminated sediments in Lake Xiaolongwan, northeast China, contain a suite of n-alkanes (C17–C33) with a strong odd over even carbon number predominance. Biomarker n-alkane proxies (average chain length, Paq ratio, grass/tree ratio, carbon preference index and compound-specific δ13C values) were used to reconstruct climate changes that occurred over the last millennium. Compound-specific δ13C values show large differences between the distinctive chain length groups of n-alkanes that originate from algae, aquatic macrophytes and terrestrial plants. Long-chain n-alkanes (C27–C33) are predominantly derived from leaf wax lipids in the forest. Variations in long-chain n-alkane δ13C values may mainly record water-use efficiency, inasmuch as the contribution from C4 plants is negligible in the Lake Xiaolongwan catchment. Short- and middle-chain n-alkanes are mainly from algae and aquatic plants. They are strongly depleted in 13C. This feature may be linked to a methane-derived, negative δ13C pool and lake overturn, which regulates dinoflagellate blooms. Parallel fluctuations are observed in δ13C27–31 values, Paq, and the grass/tree ratio throughout the record. Variations in δ13C27–31 values and Paq are in agreement with historical documents on summer and winter climate conditions. They support earlier suggestions that δ13C values in the long-chain n-alkanes and Paq may be useful indicators of effective precipitation or drought stress in this forested area. The δ13C27–31 index and Paq show distinct decadal variations. Periods with high δ13C27–31 values and a low Paq index correspond with the warm phases of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). Values are reversed during PDO cool phases. At the decadal timescale, summer monsoon rainfall in northeast China over the last millennium may have been regulated mainly by the PDO.

Seasonal temperature variability over longer timescales could offer new insights into understanding different forcing factors and response processes in the climate system. Here we report an alkenone-based temperature reconstruction for growing season over the past 1600 years from the varved sediment in Lake Sihailongwan, northeastern China. The most notable cold spells occurred during the periods ad 480–860, ad 1260–1300, ad 1510–1570 and ad 1800–1900 with a temperature decrease of about 1°C compared with the 20th century. Based on the historical evidence such as ‘snow or frost in the summertime’ and ‘no ice during the wintertime’, we compile extreme cold summer events and warm winter events over the past 1600 years. The ‘Little Ice Age’ time period experienced more extreme cold summer/warm winter events, while the ‘Medieval Warm Period’ had milder winters. Comparatively, the natural proxy data show a general similar pattern with historical documents at decadal time scales, except for between ad 1620 and 1720. Our results show multidecadal to centennial variations in seasonal temperature, possibly caused by interactions of external natural forcing and atmosphere–ocean circulations.
