The classical groundwater seepage theory was established on the basis of the principle of water equilibrium, which cannot explain the phenomenon of well water level change caused by natural seismic activities and other external loads, and is not conducive to the in-depth understanding of the role of groundwater seepage movement in various environmental geological disasters. To solve this problem, a mathematical model of pore pressure change of a confined aquifer driven by seismic wave stress is constructed based on the fluid-structure coupling dynamic theory. The numerical verification of the model is realized by using the software Comsol. The change characteristics of well water level are inversely performed by using the Cooper theory, and the results are compared with the change characteristics of well water level caused by strong earthquakes in the Sichian-Yunnan region. The influencing factors of seepage movement of a confined aquifer under earthquake are studied by changing the simulation parameters. The results show that when seismic wave loads act on the confined aquifers, pore pressure oscillates in the same period as the seismic waves, and the amplitude, frequency and hydraulic slope of the seismic waves have significant effects on the pore pressure, while the coefficient of permeability and porosity have little effect on the change characteristics. At the initial stage of seismic wave loading, pore pressure increases rapidly, and then part of the water in the aquifer is slowly discharged. The load pressure gradually transfers to the granular framework, and the rate of change of pore pressure slows down and tends to reach a new equilibrium. The variation characteristics of well water level are closely related to pore pressure, and the oscillation period and variation pattern are consistent with pore pressure, but the amplitude is different. Generally, the oscillation rises and tends to be stable, which is basically the same with the variation pattern of well water level observed in the Sichuan-Yunnan region. The results are of valuable exploration significance for the establishment and improvement of groundwater seepage theory under stress, and can enrich and expand the research ideas and application fields of traditional groundwater dynamics and classical fluid-structure coupling theory.

Denitrification is a key process in soil available nitrogen (N) loss. However, the effects of different water-saving irrigation systems on soil N components and denitrifying bacterial communities are still unclear. In this study, quantitative fluorescence PCR and Illumina MiSeq sequencing were used to investigate the effects of three main irrigation systems, conventional flooding irrigation (FP), shallow buried drip irrigation (DI), and mulched drip irrigation (MF), on the abundance, community composition, and diversity of soil nirK- and nirS-type denitrifying bacteria in the semi-arid area of Northeast China, and to clarify the driving factors of nirK- and nirS-type denitrifying bacterial community variations. The results showed that, compared with FP, MF significantly increased soil moisture, alkaline hydrolyzed nitrogen (AHN), nitrate nitrogen (NO3−-N), non-acid hydrolyzed nitrogen (AIN), and amino sugar nitrogen (ASN), but significantly decreased the contents of ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) and acid hydrolyzed ammonium nitrogen (AN). The irrigation system changed the relative abundance of the dominant genera of denitrifying bacteria, DI and MF significantly increased nitrate reductase (NR) and nitrite reductase (NiR) activities, and MF significantly increased the diversity of nirK- and nirS-type denitrifying bacteria but significantly decreased the richness. The community structure of nirK- and nirS-type denitrifying bacteria was significantly different among the three irrigation systems. NO3−-N was the main driving factor affecting the community structure of nirS-type denitrifying bacteria, and moisture significantly affected the community structure of nirK-type denitrifying bacteria. DI and MF significantly increased the abundance of nirK- and nirS-type denitrifying bacteria and also increased the abundance ratio of nirS/nirK genes. Therefore, although DI and MF significantly increased the abundance of denitrifying microorganisms, they did not lead to an increase in the N2O emission potential.

Disordered reactive oxygen/nitrogen species are a common occurrence in various diseases, which usually cause cellular oxidative damage and inflammation. Despite the wide range of applications for biomimetic nanoparticles with antioxidant or anti-inflammatory properties, designs that seamlessly integrate these two abilities with a synergistic effect in a simple manner are seldom reported. In this study, we developed a novel PEI-Mn composite nanoparticle (PM NP) using a chelation method, and the curcumin was loaded onto PM NPs via metal–phenol coordination to form PEI-Mn@curcumin nanoparticles (PMC NPs). PMC NPs possessed excellent dispersibility and cytocompatibility, was engineered to serve as an effective nanozyme, and exhibited specific SOD-like and CAT-like activities. In addition, the incorporation of curcumin granted PMC NPs the ability to effectively suppress the expression of inflammatory cytokines in microglia induced by LPS. As curcumin also has antioxidant properties, it further amplified the synergistic efficiency of ROS scavenging. Significantly, PMC NPs effectively scavenged ROS triggered by H2O2 in SIM-A9 microglia cells and Neuro-2a cells. PMC NPs also considerably mitigated DNA and lipid oxidation in Neuro-2a cells and demonstrated an increase in cell viability under various H2O2 concentrations. These properties suggest that PMC NPs have significant potential in addressing excessive ROS and inflammation related to neural diseases.

Ni-rich Lithium Nickel Cobalt Manganese Oxide (NCM) cathode materials have garnered attention for their high specific capacity, but they grapple with issues of cycling stability, thermal performance, and safety. This concise yet comprehensive review embarks on an exploration, commencing with an examination of fundamental characteristics, including crystallographic structures and electrochemical properties. It delves into the intricate failure mechanisms contributing to capacity degradation and thermal instability. The review places emphasis on major material-focused modification techniques, encompassing surface coatings and multifunctional additives, all scrutinized for their potential to enhance both performance and safety. Furthermore, it spotlights pivotal research domains, notably novel synthesis methods, positioned to reshape the landscape of Ni-rich NCM technology. The review also emphasizes future development directions, aiming for simplified and cost-effective methodologies to tackle the complexities of nickel-rich cathodes. Ultimately, this review offers a forward-looking analysis, envisioning a future marked by safer, higher-capacity lithium-ion batteries, underscoring an enduring commitment to scientific and technological progress.

Abstract Background Drought is an important abiotic stress that constrains the growth of many species. Despite extensive study in model organisms, the underlying mechanisms of drought tolerance in Nostoc flagelliforme remain elusive. Results We characterized the drought adaptation of N. flagelliforme by a combination of proteomics and qRT-PCR. A total of 351 differentially expressed proteins involved in drought stress adaptation were identified. It was found that the expression of several nutrient influx transporters was increased, including molybdate ABC transporter substrate binding protein (modA), sulfate ABC transporter substrate-binding protein (sbp) and nitrate ABC transporter (ntrB), while that of efflux transporters for toxic substances was also increased, including arsenic transporting ATPase (ArsA), potassium transporter (TrkA) and iron ABC transporter substrate-binding protein (VacB). Additionally, photosynthetic components were reduced while sugars built up during drought stress. Non-enzymatic antioxidants, orange carotenoid protein (OCP) homologs, cytochrome P450 (CYP450), proline (Pro) and ascorbic acid (AsA) were all altered during drought stress and may play important roles in scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS). Conclusion In this study, N. flagelliforme may regulates its adaptation to drought stress through the changes of protein expression in photosynthesis, energy metabolism, transport, protein synthesis and degradation and antioxidation. Highlights • A total of 351 DEPs involved in adaptation to drought stress were identified. • Changes in the expression of six OCP homologs were found in response to drought stress. • Differential expression of transporters played an important role in drought stress adaptation. • Most PSII proteins were downregulated, while PSI proteins were unchanged in response to drought stress. • Sugar metabolism was upregulated in response to drought stress.

With the growing efficiency of the use of unlicensed spectrum, the challenge of ensuring spectrum security has become increasingly daunting. Spectrum managers aim to accurately and efficiently detect and recognize anomaly behaviors in the spectrum. In this study, we propose a novel framework for spectrum anomaly detection and localization by spectrum interpolation recovery. Spectrum interpolation recovery refers to the recovery of the rest of the spectrum distribution based on a part of the spectrum distribution, which is achieved through a masked autoencoder (MAE) model with a core of multi-head self-attention (MHSA) mechanism. The spectrum interpolation recovery method restores the region where the masked abnormal signals are present, yielding anomaly-free results, with the difference between the restored and the masked representing the anomaly signals. The proposed method has been demonstrated to effectively reduce model-induced over-recovery of anomalous signals and dilute large-scale generation errors caused by anomalies, thereby improving the detection and localization performance of anomaly signals, and improving the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and the area under the precision–recall curve (AUPRC) by 0.0382 (3.68%) and 0.1992 (68.90%), respectively. On a designed dataset containing 3 variables of interference-to-signal ratio (ISR), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and anomaly type, the total recall of anomaly detection and localization at a 5% false alarm rate reached 0.8799 and 0.5536, respectively. Furthermore, a comparative study among different methods demonstrates the effectiveness and rationality of the proposed method.

BackgroundClinically, only a minority of patients benefit from immunotherapy and few efficient biomarkers have been identified to distinguish patients who would respond to immunotherapy. The tumor microenvironment (TME) is reported to contribute to immunotherapy response, but details remain unknown. We aimed to construct a prognostic model based on the TME of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) to predict the prognosis and immunotherapy efficacy.MethodsWe integrated computational algorithms to describe the immune infiltrative landscape of LUAD patients. With the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) and Cox regression analyses, we developed a LUAD tumor microenvironment prognostic signature (LATPS). Subsequently, the immune characteristics and the benefit of immunotherapy in LATPS-defined subgroups were analyzed. RNA sequencing of tumor samples from 28 lung cancer patients treated with anti-PD-1 therapy was conducted to verify the predictive value of the LATPS.ResultsWe constructed the LATPS grounded on four genes, including UBE2T, KRT6A, IRX2, and CD3D. The LATPS-low subgroup had a better overall survival (OS) and tended to have a hot immune phenotype, which was characterized by an elevated abundance of immune cell infiltration and increased activity of immune-related pathways. Additionally, tumor immune dysfunction and exclusion (TIDE) score was markedly decreased in the LATPS-low subgroup, indicating an enhanced opportunity to benefit from immunotherapy. Survival analysis in 28 advanced lung cancer patients treated with an anti-PD-1 regimen at Nanfang hospital revealed that the LATPS-low subgroup had better immunotherapy benefit.ConclusionLATPS is an effective predictor to distinguish survival, immune characteristics, and immunotherapy benefit in LUAD patients.

Sabina chinensis is a woody plant with important ecological functions in different regions of China, but its essential oils (EO) against plant pathogenic fungi remain largely undetermined. The purpose of our study was to assess the chemical composition and antifungal activity of S. chinensis EO based on optimization of the extraction process. In this study, an actionable and effective model with the experimental results and identified optimum conditions (crushing degree of 20 mesh, liquid–solid ratio of 10.1:1, immersion time of 9.1 h) was established successfully to achieve an extraction yield of 0.54%, which was basically consistent with the theoretical value. A total of 26 compounds were identified using headspace gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) and showed that the major constituent was β-phellandrene (26.64-39.26%), followed by terpinen-4-ol (6.53-11.89%), bornyl acetate (6.13-10.53%), etc. For Petri plate assays, our experiments found for the first time that S. chinensis EO revealed high and long-term antifungal activity against the tested strains, including Fusarium oxysporum and Fusarium incarnatum, at EC50 values of 1.42 and 1.15 µL/mL, which especially reached approximately 76% and 90% growth inhibition at a dose of 0.2 µL/mL, respectively. Furthermore, the antifungal activity of EO from different harvest periods showed remarkable variation. The orthogonal partial least-squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) method revealed 11 metabolites with chemical marker components, and 5 of its potential antifungal activities, terpinen-4-ol, α-terpineol, α-elemol, γ-eudesmol, and bornyl acetate, were strongly correlated with the mycelial inhibition rate. In total, this study explored the antifungal activity of EO against root rot fungus as a potential fungicide and provided valuable information into developing potential products from natural agents.

Ti3C2Tx–Fe3O4–carbon nanotube composites were prepared for electrochemical energy storage in the negative electrodes of supercapacitors. The electrodes show a remarkably high areal capacitance of 6.59 F cm−2 in a neutral Na2SO4 electrolyte, which was obtained by the development of advanced nanofabrication strategies and due to the synergistic effect of the individual components. Enhanced capacitance was achieved using the in-situ synthesis method for the Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The superparamagnetic behavior of the Fe3O4 nanoparticles facilitated the fabrication of electrodes with a reduced binder content. Good mixing of the components was achieved using a celestine blue co-dispersant, which adsorbed on the inorganic components and carbon nanotubes and facilitated their co-dispersion and mixing. The capacitive behavior was optimized by the variation of the electrode composition and mass loading in a range of 30–45 mg cm−2. An asymmetric device was proposed and fabricated, which contained a Ti3C2Tx–Fe3O4–carbon nanotube negative electrode and a polypyrrole–carbon nanotube positive electrode for operation in an Na2SO4 electrolyte. The asymmetric supercapacitor device demonstrated high areal capacitance and excellent power-density characteristics in an enlarged voltage window of 1.6 V. This investigation opens a new avenue for the synthesis and design of MXene-based asymmetric supercapacitors for future energy storage devices.

Lysine malonylation (Kmal) is an evolutionarily conserved post-translational modification (PTM) that has been demonstrated to be involved in cellular and organismal metabolism. However, the role that Kmal plays in response to drought stress of the terrestrial cyanobacteria N. flagelliforme is still unknown. In this study, we performed the first proteomic analysis of Kmal in N. flagelliforme under different drought stresses using LC-MS/MS. In total, 421 malonylated lysine residues were found in 236 different proteins. GO and KEGG enrichment analysis indicated that these malonylated proteins were highly enriched in several metabolic pathways, including carbon metabolism and photosynthesis. Decreased malonylation levels were found to hinder the reception and transmission of light energy and CO2 fixation, which led to a decrease in photosynthetic activity. Kmal was also shown to inhibit the flux of the TCA cycle and activate the gluconeogenesis pathway in response to drought stress. Furthermore, malonylated antioxidant enzymes and antioxidants were synergistically involved in reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging. Malonylation was involved in lipid degradation and amino acid biosynthesis as part of drought stress adaptation. This work represents the first comprehensive investigation of the role of malonylation in dehydrated N. flagelliforme, providing an important resource for understanding the drought tolerance mechanism of this organism.

Pure Ti3C2Tx and Ti3C2Tx -multiwalled carbon nanotube (MCNT) anodes with 35 ​mg ​cm−2 active mass (AM) are prepared. The 90%Ti3C2Tx-10%MCNT electrode shows the capacitance (CS) of 1.78 F cm−2 for 2 ​mV s−1 cyclic voltammetry sweep and 1.95 ​F ​cm−2 for a constant current discharge at 3 mAcm−2 in 0.5 ​M Na2SO4 aqueous medium. The CS of the Ti3C2Tx-10 MCNT anode significantly exceeds the literature results for other Ti3C2Tx anodes. The Ti3C2Tx-MCNT electrodes, showed low resistance and good CS retention at fast charging. Good electrode properties at high AM are achieved due to the use of advanced catecholate-type dispersant. The 3,4,5-trihydroxybenzamide (THB) dispersant showed adsorption on Ti3C2Tx and MCNT, favoured their dispersive mixing, and enhanced CS of the composite. High CS in aqueous 0.5 ​M Na2SO4 medium is promising for application in asymmetric supercapacitor cells operating in enlarged voltage range.

This investigation is motivated by increasing interest in the development of magnetically ordered pseudocapacitors (MOPC), which exhibit interesting magnetocapacitive effects. Here, advanced pseudocapacitive properties of magnetic CuFe2O4 nanoparticles in negative potential range are reported, suggesting that CuFe2O4 is a promising MOPC and advanced negative electrode material for supercapacitors. A high capacitance of 2.76 F cm−2 is achieved at a low electrode resistance in a relatively large potential window of 0.8 V. The cyclic voltammograms and galvanostatic charge–discharge data show nearly ideal pseudocapacitive behavior. Good electrochemical performance is achieved at a high active mass loading due to the use of chelating molecules of ammonium salt of purpuric acid (ASPA) as a co-dispersant for CuFe2O4 nanoparticles and conductive multiwalled carbon nanotube (MCNT) additives. The adsorption of ASPA on different materials is linked to structural features of ASPA, which allows for different interaction and adsorption mechanisms. The combination of advanced magnetic and pseudocapacitive properties in a negative potential range in a single MOPC material provides a platform for various effects related to the influence of pseudocapacitive/magnetic properties on magnetic/pseudocapacitive behavior.

Nostoc flagelliforme is a kind of terrestrial edible cyanobacteria with important ecological and economic value which has developed special mechanisms to adapt to drought conditions. However, the specific mechanism of lipidome changes in drought tolerance of N. flagelliforme has not been well understood. In this study, the ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry were employed to analyze the lipidome changes of N. flagelliforme under dehydration. A total of 853 lipid molecules were identified, of which 171 were significantly different from that of the control group. The digalactosyldiacylglycerol/monogalactosyldiacylglycerol (DGDG/MGDG) ratio was increased. The amount of wax ester (WE) was sharply decreased during drought stress, while Co (Q10) was accumulated. The levels of odd chain fatty acids (OCFAs) were increased under dehydration, positively responding to drought stress according to the energy metabolism state. In conclusion, the lipidomic data corroborated that oxidation, degradation, and biosynthesis of membrane lipids took place during lipid metabolism, which can respond to drought stress through the transformation of energy and substances. Besides, we constructed a lipid metabolic model demonstrating the regulatory mechanism of drought stress in N. flagelliforme. The present study provides insight into the defense strategies of cyanobacteria in lipid metabolic pathways.

In this paper, an adaptive locomotion control approach for a hexapod robot is proposed. Inspired from biological neuro control systems, a 3D two-layer artificial center pattern generator (CPG) network is adopted to generate the locomotion of the robot. The first layer of the CPG is responsible for generating several basic locomotion patterns and the functional configuration of this layer is determined through kinematics analysis. The second layer of the CPG controls the limb behavior of the robot to adapt to environment change in a specific locomotion pattern. To enable the adaptability of the limb behavior controller, a reinforcement learning (RL)-based approach is employed to tune the CPG parameters. Owing to symmetrical structure of the robot, only two parameters need to be learned iteratively. Thus, the proposed approach can be used in practice. Finally, both simulations and experiments are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control approach.

Microexpression is usually characterized by short duration and small action range, and the existing general expression recognition algorithms do not work well for microexpression. As a feature extraction method, non-negative matrix factorization can decompose the original data into different components, which has been successfully applied to facial recognition. In this paper, local non-negative matrix factorization is explored to decompose microexpression into some facial muscle actions, and extract features for recognition based on apex frame. However, the existing microexpression datasets fall short of samples to train a classifier with good generalization. The macro-to-micro algorithm based on singular value decomposition can augment the number of microexpressions, but it cannot meet non-negative properties of feature vectors. To address these problems, we propose an improved macro-to-micro algorithm to augment microexpression samples by manipulating the macroexpression data based on local non-negative matrix factorization. Finally, several experiments are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, which results show that it has a higher recognition accuracy for microexpression compared with the related algorithms based on CK+/CASME2/SAMM datasets.

The high theoretical capacitance of MnO2 renders it a promising material for the cathodes of asymmetric supercapacitors. The good dispersion of MnO2 and conductive additives in a nanocomposite electrode is a key factor for efficient electrode performance. This article describes, for the first time, the application of rhamnolipids (RL) as efficient natural biosurfactants for the fabrication of nanocomposite MnO2-carbon nanotube electrodes for supercapacitors. RL act as co-dispersants for MnO2 and carbon nanotubes and facilitate their efficient mixing, which allows for advanced capacitive properties at an active mass of 40 mg cm−2 in Na2SO4 electrolytes. The highest capacitance obtained from the cyclic voltammetry data at a scan rate of 2 mV s−1 is 8.10 F cm−2 (202.6 F g−1). The highest capacitance obtained from the galvanostatic charge–discharge data at a current density of 3 mA cm−2 is 8.65 F cm−2 (216.16 F g−1). The obtained capacitances are higher than the capacitances of MnO2-based electrodes of the same active mass reported in the literature. The approach developed in this investigation is simple compared to other techniques used for the fabrication of electrodes with high active mass. It offers advantages of using a biocompatible RL biosurfactant.

Zn-Fe double hydroxide (Zn-Fe-DH) – multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composite has been developed as a new material for energy storage in negative electrodes of asymmetric supercapacitors. A conceptually new approach is based on the use of celestine blue (CB) dye as a multifunctional additive. We discovered that CB acted as a co-dispersant for Zn-Fe-DH and MWCNT and facilitated their mixing. New strategy was based on the use of CB as charge transfer mediator, which facilitated charge-discharge reactions. The electrodes showed a capacitance of 5.2 F cm–2 in 0.5 M Na2SO4 electrolyte in a voltage window of −1.0 to −0.2 V vs. saturated calomel electrode and good cyclic stability. A new asymmetric device has been developed, containing Zn-Fe-DH-MWCNT negative electrodes and polypyrrole coated MWCNT positive electrodes. Good capacitive behavior of cathode and anode materials was achieved at high active mass of 40 mg cm–2 in partially overlapping potential windows. The device showed promising performance in a voltage window of 1.6 V. The capacitance of 2.2 F cm–2 was obtained at a scan rate of 2 mV s–1.

Soft robots have recently received much attention with their infinite degrees of freedoms and continuously deformable structures, which allow them to adapt well to the unstructured environment. A new type of soft actuator, namely, dielectric elastomer actuator (DEA) which has several excellent properties such as large deformation and high energy density is investigated in this study. Furthermore, a DEA-based soft robot is designed and developed. Due to the difficulty of accurate modeling caused by nonlinear electromechanical coupling and viscoelasticity, the iterative learning control (ILC) method is employed for the motion trajectory tracking with an uncertain model of the DEA. A D2 type ILC algorithm is proposed for the task. Furthermore, a knowledge-based model framework with kinematic analysis is explored to prove the convergence of the proposed ILC. Finally, both simulations and experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the ILC, which results show that excellent tracking performance can be achieved by the soft crawling robot.

Stroke is becoming a widely concerned social problem, and robot-assisted devices have made considerable contributions in the training and treatment of rehabilitation. Due to the compliance and continuous deformation capacity, rehabilitation devices driven by soft actuators are attached to widespread attention. Considering the large output force of pneumatic artificial muscle (PAM) and the biological musculoskeletal structure, an antagonistic PAM-driven rehabilitation robotic device is developed. To fulfill the need for control of the proposed device, a knowledge-guided data-driven modeling approach is used and an adaptive feedforward–feedback control approach is presented to ensure the motion accuracy under large deformation motion with high frequency. Finally, several simulations and experiments are carried out to evaluate the performance of the developed system, and the results show that the developed system with the proposed controller can achieve expected control performance under various operations.

MXenes, such as Ti3C2Tx, are promising materials for electrodes of supercapacitors (SCs). Colloidal techniques have potential for the fabrication of advanced Ti3C2Tx composites with high areal capacitance (CS). This paper reports the fabrication of Ti3C2TX-Fe3O4-multiwalled carbon nanotube (CNT) electrodes, which show CS of 5.52 F cm−2 in the negative potential range in 0.5 M Na2SO4 electrolyte. Good capacitive performance is achieved at a mass loading of 35 mg cm−2 due to the use of Celestine blue (CB) as a co-dispersant for individual materials. The mechanisms of CB adsorption on Ti3C2TX, Fe3O4, and CNTs and their electrostatic co-dispersion are discussed. The comparison of the capacitive behavior of Ti3C2TX-Fe3O4-CNT electrodes with Ti3C2TX-CNT and Fe3O4-CNT electrodes for the same active mass, electrode thickness and CNT content reveals a synergistic effect of the individual capacitive materials, which is observed due to the use of CB. The high CS of Ti3C2TX-Fe3O4-CNT composites makes them promising materials for application in negative electrodes of asymmetric SC devices.

Rubus eucalyptus Focke belong to genus Rubus in the family Rosaceae, the fresh fruits of which can be used for medicine and cosmetic. The plastome of R. eucalyptus is 155,672 bp in length, with one large single copy region of 85,277 bp, one small single copy region of 18,864 bp, and two inverted repeat (IR) regions of 25,748 bp. It contains 130 genes, including 86 protein-coding genes, 8 ribosomal RNA, and 37 transfer RNA. Phylogenetic tree shows that R. eucalyptus was at the basal of Rosaceae. The published plastome within Rubus provides significant insight for elucidating the phylogenetic relationship of taxa within tribe Rosaceae.

Core body temperature (CBT) is an important and commonly used indicator of human health and endurance performance. A rise in baseline CBT can be attributed to an onset of flu, infection or even thermoregulatory failure when it becomes excessive. Sites which have been used for measurement of CBT include the pulmonary artery, the esophagus, the rectum and the tympanic membrane. Among them, the tympanic membrane is an attractive measurement site for CBT due to its unobtrusive nature and ease of measurement facilitated, especially when continuous CBT measurements are needed for monitoring such as during military, occupational and sporting settings. However, to-date, there are still polarizing views on the suitability of tympanic membrane as a CBT site. This paper will revisit a number of key unresolved issues in the literature and also presents, for the first time, a benchmark of the middle ear temperature against temperature measurements from other sites. Results from experiments carried out on human and primate subjects will be presented to draw a fresh set of insights against the backdrop of hypotheses and controversies.

Leaf stable carbon isotope (δ13C) composition provides comprehensive insight into plant carbon cycles and water use efficiency and has also been widely used to evaluate the response of plants to environmental change. In the present study, leaf δ13C was analyzed in samples of Caragana microphylla Lam., C. liouana Zhao, and C. korshinskii Kom. from 38 populations. These species provide great environmental benefits and economic value and are distributed east to west continuously across northern China. We studied the relationship of δ13C to altitude, mean annual precipitation (MAP), mean annual temperature (MAT), mean annual relative humidity (RH), leaf nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) concentrations to examine the patterns and controls of leaf δ13C variation in each species. Results indicated that, across the three species, leaf δ13C significantly decreased with MAP, RH, and leaf N and P concentrations, while it increased with altitude and MAT. However, patterns and environmental controls of leaf δ13C varied proportionally with species. C. korshinskii was mainly controlled by MAP and leaf N concentration, C. liouana was controlled by both MAT and MAP, and C. microphylla was mainly controlled by MAT. Further analysis indicated significant differences in leaf δ13C between species, which tended to increase from C. microphylla to C. korshinskii. Overall, these results suggest that the three Caragana species may respond differently to future climate change due to different controlling factors on leaf δ13C variation, as well as differentiation in water use efficiency, which likely contributes to the geographical distribution of these species.

Salt stress is a major abiotic stress that limits crop productivity in many regions of the world. A comparative proteomic approach to identify salt stress-responsive proteins and to understand the molecular mechanisms was carried out in the woody halophyte Kandelia candel. Four-leaf-old K. candel seedlings were exposed to 150 (control), 300, 450, and 600 mM NaCl for 3 days. Proteins extracted from the leaves of K. candel seedlings were separated by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE). More than 900 protein spots were detected on each gel, and 53 differentially expressed protein spots were located with at least two-fold differences in abundance on 2-DE maps, of which 48 were identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight/time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-TOF/MS). The results showed that K. candel could withstand up to 450 mM NaCl stress by up-regulating proteins that are mainly involved in photosynthesis, respiration and energy metabolism, Na(+) compartmentalization, protein folding and assembly, and signal transduction. Physiological data, including superoxide dismutase (SOD) and dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR) activities, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and superoxide anion radicals (O2(-)) contents, as well as Na(+) content and K(+)/Na(+) ratios all correlated well with our proteomic results. This study provides new global insights into woody halophyte salt stress responses. Identification of differentially expressed proteins promotes better understanding of the molecular basis for salt stress reduction in K. candel.

Nostoc flagelliforme, a filamentous nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium, is widely distributed in arid steppes of the west and northwestern parts of China. However, as a food delicacy this species has been overexploited from 1970 to 2000. Moreover, overgrazing, land reclamation and the removal of medicinal herbs have caused severely reduced vegetation coverage there. In this communication, a badly damaged but slowly rehabilitating N. flagelliforme-inhibiting steppe is described, and the rehabilitation of desertified steppes by the renewed growth of N. flagelliforme is proposed. The restoration of this dominant nitrogen supplier would be an ecologically sustainable solution for supplementing current measures already taken in the desertified regions. In addition, a goal of 50%–60% vegetation coverage is proposed by the N. flagelliforme restoration.
