Abstract Background To explore the capability of diffusion-based virtual MR elastography (vMRE) in the preoperative prediction of recurrence in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and to investigate the underlying relevant histopathological characteristics. Methods Between August 2015 and December 2016, patients underwent preoperative MRI examination with a dedicated DWI sequence (b-values: 200,1500 s/mm2) were recruited. The ADC values and diffusion-based virtual shear modulus (μ diff ) of HCCs were calculated and MR morphological features were also analyzed. The Cox proportional hazards model was used to identify the risk factors associated with tumor recurrence. A preoperative radiologic model and postoperative model including pathological features were built to predict tumor recurrence after hepatectomy. Results A total of 87 patients with solitary surgically confirmed HCCs were included in this study. Thirty-five patients (40.2%) were found to have tumor recurrence after hepatectomy. The preoperative model included higher μ diff and corona enhancement, while the postoperative model included higher μ diff , microvascular invasion, and histologic tumor grade. Aims: To investigate the risk factors for unsuccessful radial head reduction (RHR) in children with chronic Monteggia fractures (CMFs) treated surgically. Methods: A total of 209 children (mean age 6.84 years (SD 2.87)), who underwent surgical treatment for CMFs between March 2015 and March 2023 at six institutions, were retrospectively reviewed. Assessed risk factors included age, sex, laterality, dislocation direction and distance, preoperative proximal radial metaphysis width, time from injury to surgery, reduction method, annular ligament reconstruction, radiocapitellar joint fixation, ulnar osteotomy, site of ulnar osteotomy, preoperative and postoperative ulnar angulation, ulnar fixation method, progressive ulnar distraction, and postoperative cast immobilization. Independent-samples t-test, chi-squared test, and logistic regression analysis were used to identify the risk factors associated with unsuccessful RHR. Results: Redislocation occurred during surgery in 48 patients (23%), and during follow-up in 44 (21.1%). The mean follow-up of patients with successful RHR was 13.25 months (6 to 78). According to the univariable analysis, time from injury to surgery (p = 0.002) and preoperative dislocation distance (p = 0.042) were identified as potential risk factors for unsuccessful RHR. However, only time from injury to surgery (p = 0.007) was confirmed as a risk factor by logistic regression analysis. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis and chi-squared test confirmed that a time from injury to surgery greater than 1.75 months increased the rate of unsuccessful RHR above the cutoff (p = 0.002). Conclusion: Time from injury to surgery is the primary independent risk factor for unsuccessful RHR in surgically treated children with CMFs, particularly in those with a time from injury to surgery of more than 1.75 months. No other factors were found to influence the incidence of unsuccessful RHR. Surgical reduction of paediatric CMFs should be performed within the first two months of injury whenever possible. Objectives. The annual prevalence of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is increasing, and the lack of effective treatments imposes a substantial burden on both patients and society. The formation of nasal polyps in patients with CRS is closely related to tissue remodeling, which is largely driven by the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). MicroRNA (miRNA) plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of numerous diseases through the miRNA-mRNA regulatory network; however, the specific mechanism of the miRNAs involved in the formation of nasal polyps remains unclear. Methods. The expression of EMT markers and Smad3 were detected using western blots, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, and immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence staining. Differentially expressed genes in nasal polyps and normal tissues were screened through the Gene Expression Omnibus database. To predict the target genes of miR-145-5p, three different miRNA target prediction databases were used. The migratory ability of cells was evaluated using cell migration assay and wound healing assays. Results. miR-145-5p was associated with the EMT process and was significantly downregulated in nasal polyp tissues. In vitro experiments revealed that the downregulation of miR-145-5p promoted EMT. Conversely, increasing miR-145-5p levels reversed the EMT induced by transforming growth factor-β1. Bioinformatics analysis suggested that miR-145-5p targets Smad3. Subsequent experiments confirmed that miR-145-5p inhibits Smad3 expression. Conclusion. Overall, miR-145-5p is a promising target to inhibit nasal polyp formation, and the findings of this study provide a theoretical basis for nanoparticle-mediated miR-145-5p delivery for the treatment of nasal polyps.

Abstract Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is the primary factor contributing to low back pain (LBP). Unlike elderly patients, many young IVDD patients usually have a history of trauma or long-term abnormal stress, which may lead to local inflammatory reaction causing by immune cells, and ultimately accelerates degeneration. Research has shown the significance of M1-type macrophages in IVDD; nevertheless, the precise mechanism and the route by which it influences the function of nucleus pulposus cell (NPC) remain unknown. Utilizing a rat acupuncture IVDD model and an NPC degeneration model induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), we investigated the function of M1 macrophage-derived exosomes (M1-Exos) in IVDD both in vivo and in vitro in this study. We found that M1-Exos enhanced LPS-induced NPC senescence, increased the number of SA-β-gal-positive cells, blocked the cell cycle, and promoted the activation of P21 and P53. M1-Exos derived from supernatant pretreated with the exosome inhibitor GW4869 reversed this result in vivo and in vitro. RNA-seq showed that Lipocalin2 (LCN2) was enriched in M1-Exos and targeted the NF-κB pathway. The quantity of SA-β-gal-positive cells was significantly reduced with the inhibition of LCN2, and the expression of P21 and P53 in NPCs was decreased. The same results were obtained in the acupuncture-induced IVDD model. In addition, inhibition of LCN2 promotes the expression of type II collagen (Col-2) and inhibits the expression of matrix metalloproteinase 13 (MMP13), thereby restoring the equilibrium of metabolism inside the extracellular matrix (ECM) in vitro and in vivo. In addition, the NF-κB pathway is crucial for regulating M1-Exo-mediated NPC senescence. After the addition of M1-Exos to LPS-treated NPCs, p-p65 activity was significantly activated, while si-LCN2 treatment significantly inhibited p-p65 activity. Therefore, this paper demonstrates that M1 macrophage-derived exosomes have the ability to deliver LCN2, which activates the NF-κB signaling pathway, and exacerbates IVDD by accelerating NPC senescence. This may shed new light on the mechanism of IVDD and bring a fresh approach to IVDD therapy. Graphical Abstract

Abstract The issues of health assessment and lifespan prediction have always been prominent challenges in the large‐scale application of lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs). This paper reviews the multiscale modeling techniques and their applications in battery health analysis, including atomic scale computational chemistry, particle scale reaction simulations, electrode scale structural models, macroscale electrochemical models, and data‐driven models at the system level. Multiscale modeling offers a profound insight into material behavior and the aging process of batteries, thereby providing a valuable reference for both estimation and management strategies of battery state of health. To extend the battery lifespan, the utilization of artificial intelligence for material discovery and manufacturing process optimization, the implementation of end‐cloud collaborative battery management systems, and the design of a multiscale simulation integration platform are considered. A management framework aimed at extending battery life is further proposed. This framework offers a promising roadmap for addressing health analysis challenges in LIBs, ultimately leading to more reliable, efficient, and durable solutions for next‐generation batteries.

Abstract Background This study aimed to investigate the potential association between the circadian rhythm of blood pressure and deceleration capacity (DC)/acceleration capacity (AC) in patients with essential hypertension. Methods This study included 318 patients with essential hypertension, whether or not they were being treated with anti-hypertensive drugs, who underwent 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM). Patients were categorized into three groups based on the percentage of nocturnal systolic blood pressure (SBP) dipping: the dipper, non-dipper and reverse dipper groups. Baseline demographic characteristics, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring parameters, Holter recordings (including DC and AC), and echocardiographic parameters were collected. To develop emerging electrode materials and improve the performances of batteries, the machine learning techniques can provide insights to discover, design and develop battery new materials in high-throughput way. In this paper, two deep learning models are developed and trained with two feature groups extracted from the Materials Project datasets to predict the battery electrochemical performances including average voltage, specific capacity and specific energy. The deep learning models are trained with the multilayer perceptron as the core. The Bayesian optimization and Monte Carlo methods are applied to improve the prediction accuracy of models. Based on 10 types of ion batteries, the correlation coefficients are maintained above 0.9 compared to DFT calculation results and the mean absolute error of the prediction results for voltages of two models can reach 0.41 V and 0.20 V, respectively. The electrochemical performance prediction times for the two trained models on thousands of batteries are only 72.9 ms and 75.7 ms. Besides, the two deep learning models are applied to approach the screening of emerging electrode materials for sodium-ion and potassium-ion batteries. This work can contribute to a high-throughput computational method to accelerate the rational and fast materials discovery and design.

In this work, low cycle fatigue experiments under both strain and stress control modes with different loading levels were conducted on 304 austenitic stainless steel at ambient temperature to discuss the influence of loading mode and level on the cyclic response and physical mechanism. The results demonstrated that the cyclic response generally exhibited three stages: primary cyclic hardening, subsequent cyclic softening, and the secondary hardening finally. The degree of each hardening and softening stage was depended on not only the loading modes but also the strain/stress level. Accelerated cyclic softening and retarded secondary hardening occurred under the stress mode, which made a higher low-cycle fatigue life during stress cyclic loading than that for the strain control mode, especially at relatively high strain/stress level. The secondary hardening stage, occupying the main portion of the lifetime, was proved to be associated with the development of martensitic phase and the extension and intersecting of stacking faults or micro-twin.

In this paper, promising but simple schemes are investigated to enhance the micro-bunching of relativistic electron beams for coherent harmonic generation (CHG) by using phase merging effects. In contrast to the standard CHG scheme, two specially designed dispersion sections (DSs) are adopted with the DS-modulator–DS configuration. The phase space of the e beam is appropriately coupled in the first DS, and the electrons within one seed wavelength can merge to the same phase with a matched second DS. Micro-bunching of the e beam can thus be enhanced by a large margin with much higher-harmonic components. Taking e beams from laser wakefield accelerators (LWFAs) as an example, start-to-end simulations are performed to show the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed schemes with several configurations. The beam current can be optimized to several tens to hundreds of kiloamperes, and the radiation power reaches hundreds of megawatts in the extreme ultraviolet regime within a 3.5 m-long beamline. The proposed schemes offer new opportunities for future compact free-electron lasers driven by LWFAs and provides prospects for truly compact and widely applicable systems.

Scutellaria strigillosa Hemsl., known for its traditional use in Chinese herbal medicine, is valued for heat-clearing and detoxifying, promoting diuresis, reducing swelling, alleviating pain, and preventing miscarriage. Despite its historical use, comprehensive studies on pharmacophylogenetic analysis, including genetic and chemical profiles and the antimicrobial activity of S. strigillosa are still lacking. Understanding these aspects is crucial for fully realizing its therapeutic potential and ensuring sustainable use. This study aims to elucidate these aspects through comparative genomics, metabolomics, and antimicrobial assays with Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi and Scutellaria barbata D. Don. The chloroplast genome of S. strigillosa was assembled, measuring 152,533 bp, and revealing a high degree of conservation, especially in the protein-coding regions, and identified four regions trnK(UUU)-rps16, trnN(GUU)-trnR(ACG), accD-psaI, psbE-petL) of variability that could serve as phylogenetic markers. The phylogenetic analysis revealed a closer genetic relationship of S. strigillosa with S. tuberifera and S. scordifolia than traditionally classified, suggesting a need for taxonomic reevaluation within the genus. UPLC-Q-TOF-MS analysis in negative ion mode was used to explore the chemical diversity among these species, revealing distinct variations in their chemical compositions. S. strigillosa shared a closer chemical profile with S. barbata, aligning with phylogenetic findings. Metabolomic identification through Progenesis QI software resulted in the tentative identification of 112 metabolites, including a substantial number of flavonoids, diterpenoids, iridoid glycosides, phenylethanoid glycosides, and others. HPLC analysis further detailed the concentrations of 12 actives across the species, highlighting the variation in compound content. S. strigillosa shows antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, similar to S. baicalensis root extracts. This research enhances the understanding of the phylogenetic and phytochemical profiles and the antibacterial activity of S. strigillosa, offering new insights into its medicinal properties. The findings suggest a need for taxonomic reevaluation within the genus and underscore the potential antibacterial activity of S. strigillosa for therapeutic applications. Further studies are encouraged to explore its full medicinal potential and contribute to the sustainable development of Scutellaria species.

Abstract Background Although nucleos(t)ide analogues (NAs) are thought to reduce the risk of hepatitis B virus (HBV)‐related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the effect of NA discontinuation on the prognosis of HBV‐related HCC after hepatectomy is rarely reported. We aimed to investigate the potential for hepatitis B virus e antigen (HBeAg)‐negative HBV‐related HCC patients to discontinue NAs based on preoperative hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg) status. Methods This historical cohort study involved 1232 NA‐treated HBeAg‐negative patients who underwent curative hepatectomy for HBV‐related HCC from 2014 to 2019. The recurrence‐free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) of patients discontinuing NAs before surgery were compared with those continuing NAs. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to balance baseline characteristics. Results Of all enrolled patients, 839 (68.1%) patients continued NAs, and 393 (31.9%) patients discontinued NAs. Summary: Indanone and its analogs are widely used intermediates for many useful chemicals. Decalin and its alkylated analogs are major components of thermal-stable aviation fuels and the additives used to improve the thermal stability of aviation fuel. In this work, we develop an integrated route to selectively produce trimethyl-indanone or alkylated decalin with cellulose. First, cellulose was hydrogenolyzed to 2,5-hexanedione in a biphasic reaction system of toluene/NH4Br aqueous solution over Pd/C catalyst. Under the catalysis of alkali hydroxide, 2,5-hexanedione was converted to a mixture of C12 oxygenates (with trimethyl-indanone as the main component) at room temperature. Trimethyl-indanone can be used as an intermediate for many useful chemicals. Moreover, the C12 oxygenates can be hydrodeoxygenated to a mixture of dimethyl decalin and C12 monocycloalkanes with a low freezing point (200 K) and high density (0.85 g mL−1). This work provides insights on the preparation of indanone or advanced aviation fuel with cellulose. Science for society: The production of valuable chemicals and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) with renewable, cheap, and abundant lignocellulose has drawn a lot of attention. Indanone and its analogs are widely used as intermediates in the manufacture of many useful chemicals. Currently, these compounds are obtained from fossil resources at low yields. Decalin and alkylated decalins are additives to improve the thermal stability of aviation fuel. Herein, we report an integrated route for the selective preparation of trimethyl-indanone or alkylated decalins with cellulose, the most abundant biomass. Compared with the reported processes to produce indanone analogs or SAF, this new process has several advantages, such as renewable feedstock, mild reaction conditions, fewer steps, and excellent fuel properties (e.g., lower freezing point, higher volumetric heat value, thermal stability of final products, etc.). This work paves a new way for the high-value utilization of cellulose.

Background Children and adolescents who are overweight and obese represent a growing public health issue. The use of step-monitoring devices as an intervention tool may be a simple, cost-effective, and easily replicable solution for addressing obesity in children and adolescents. No prior systematic reviews have evaluated the effectiveness of utilizing step-monitoring devices as an intervention method for obesity in children and adolescents. Methods Previous studies on using step-monitoring devices to prevent and treat obesity in children and adolescents were identified in the following databases: Web of Science, EMBASE, PubMed, Cochrane Library, SPORTDiscus, and SCOPUS. The search period for each database ranged from the year of their inception to 8 March 2023 (updated in June 2024). Meta-analyses were performed for mean differences (MDs) in body mass index (BMI), BMI z -score (BMI-Z), body fat, waist circumference, and body weight. Results From 12,907 relevant records, 23 studies were included in this meta-analysis. The included studies were mainly at low risk of bias, except for blinding. Step-monitoring device-based interventions had significant effects in reducing BMI-Z (MD −0.06; 95% CI −0.10 to −0.02), body fat (MD −0.95%; 95% CI −1.35 to −0.54), and body weight (MD −1.23 kg; 95% CI −2.36 to −0.10). However, there was no significant effect on BMI (MD −0.16 kg/m 2 ; 95% CI −0.55 to 0.22) and waist circumference (MD −0.33 cm; 95% CI −1.23 to 0.58). Subgroup analyses indicated that participants who were overweight or obese showed greater intervention effects on BMI and BMI-Z compared to participants with normal weight. The programs with an intervention duration of ≤6 months presented a greater intervention effect on BMI-Z than those with an intervention duration of more than 6 months. The programs that established goals had a greater intervention effect on body fat than those that did not. Conclusions Step-monitoring devices may be an effective and generalizable intervention tool for the prevention and treatment of obesity in children and adolescents. Future studies should further explore how to set step goals and the duration of interventions to achieve better intervention effects.

Abstract Background The aim of this study was to assess the microbial variations and biomarkers in the vaginal and oral environments of patients with human papillomavirus (HPV) and cervical cancer (CC) and to develop novel prediction models. Materials and methods This study included 164 samples collected from both the vaginal tract and oral subgingival plaque of 82 women. The participants were divided into four distinct groups based on their vaginal and oral samples: the control group (Z/KZ, n = 22), abortion group (AB/KAB, n = 17), HPV-infected group (HP/KHP, n = 21), and cervical cancer group (CC/KCC, n = 22). Microbiota analysis was conducted using full-length 16S rDNA gene sequencing with the PacBio platform. Results The vaginal bacterial community in the Z and AB groups exhibited a relatively simple structure predominantly dominated by Lactobacillus. However, CC group shows high abundances of anaerobic bacteria and alpha diversity. Biomarkers such as Bacteroides, Mycoplasma, Bacillus, Dialister, Porphyromonas, Anaerococcus, and Prevotella were identified as indicators of CC. Correlations were established between elevated blood C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and local/systemic inflammation, pregnancy, childbirth, and abortion, which contribute to unevenness in the vaginal microenvironment. The altered microbial diversity in the CC group was confirmed by amino acid metabolism. Oral microbial diversity exhibited an inverse pattern to that of the vaginal microbiome, indicating a unique relationship. The microbial diversity of the KCC group was significantly lower than that of the KZ group, indicating a link between oral health and cancer development. Several microbes, including Fusobacterium, Campylobacter, Capnocytophaga, Veillonella, Streptococcus, Lachnoanaerobaculum, Propionibacterium, Prevotella, Lactobacillus, and Neisseria, were identified as CC biomarkers. Moreover, periodontal pathogens were associated with blood CRP levels and oral hygiene conditions. Elevated oral microbial amino acid metabolism in the CC group was closely linked to the presence of pathogens. Positive correlations indicated a synergistic relationship between vaginal and oral bacteria. Conclusion HPV infection and CC impact both the vaginal and oral microenvironments, affecting systemic metabolism and the synergy between bacteria. This suggests that the use of oral flora markers is a potential screening tool for the diagnosis of CC.

Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the association between hypothyroidism in early pregnancy and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and the effect of probiotics. Patients with hypothyroidism in early pregnancy and normal pregnant women during the same period were included in the methane–hydrogen breath test to compare the incidence of SIBO, smoothed curve fit, and differences in clinical symptoms. For those who combined with SIBO, the rate of clinical symptom conversion, thyroid hormones, and changes in associated inflammatory indexes were compared after 21 days of treatment with probiotics on top of conventional levothyroxine sodium tablets. The results are as follows: (1) The incidence of combined SIBO in patients with hypothyroidism in pregnancy was 56.0%, significantly higher than the 28.0% of normal pregnant women during the same period. Timely acquisition of rescue target information is critical for emergency response after a flood disaster. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) equipped with remote sensing capabilities offer distinct advantages, including high-resolution imagery and exceptional mobility, making them well suited for monitoring flood extent and identifying rescue targets during floods. However, there are some challenges in interpreting rescue information in real time from flood images captured by UAVs, such as the complexity of the scenarios of UAV images, the lack of flood rescue target detection datasets and the limited real-time processing capabilities of the airborne on-board platform. Thus, we propose a real-time rescue target detection method for UAVs that is capable of efficiently delineating flood extent and identifying rescue targets (i.e., pedestrians and vehicles trapped by floods). The proposed method achieves real-time rescue information extraction for UAV platforms by lightweight processing and fusion of flood extent extraction model and target detection model. The flood inundation range is extracted by the proposed method in real time and detects targets such as people and vehicles to be rescued based on this layer. Our experimental results demonstrate that the Intersection over Union (IoU) for flood water extraction reaches an impressive 80%, and the IoU for real-time flood water extraction stands at a commendable 76.4%. The information on flood stricken targets extracted by this method in real time can be used for flood emergency rescue.

In this paper, we investigate a class of competitive and cooperative Nicholson's blowfly equations. By applying the Lyapunov functional and analysis technique, the conditions for the existence and exponential convergence of a positive almost periodic solution are derived. Moreover, an example and numerical simulation for justifying the theoretical analysis are also provided.

Abstract Ischemic stroke produces the highest adult disability. Despite successful recanalization, no-reflow, or the futile restoration of the cerebral perfusion after ischemia, is a major cause of brain lesion expansion. However, the vascular mechanism underlying this hypoperfusion is largely unknown, and no approach is available to actively promote optimal reperfusion to treat no-reflow. Here, by combining two-photon laser scanning microscopy (2PLSM) and a mouse middle cerebral arteriolar occlusion (MCAO) model, we find myogenic vasomotion deficits correlated with post-ischemic cerebral circulation interruptions and no-reflow. Transient occlusion-induced transient loss of mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm) permanently impairs mitochondria-endoplasmic reticulum (ER) contacts and abolish Ca2+ oscillation in smooth muscle cells (SMCs), the driving force of myogenic spontaneous vasomotion. Furthermore, tethering mitochondria and ER by specific overexpression of ME-Linker in SMCs restores cytosolic Ca2+ homeostasis, remotivates myogenic spontaneous vasomotion, achieves optimal reperfusion, and ameliorates neurological injury. Collectively, the maintaining of arteriolar myogenic vasomotion and mitochondria-ER contacts in SMCs, are of critical importance in preventing post-ischemic no-reflow.

Abstract From core observations of shales of the Niutitang formation in the northern part of Guizhou Province, China, calcite was often found to act as a natural fracture filler and affect the extension of fractures in hydraulic fracturing. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the tensile mechanical behavior of shales by calcite veins. In this paper, by computed tomography scanning of shales containing calcite veins of different dip angles from the Niutitang formation, a three‐dimensional numerical model reflecting the internal fine structure of the shale was constructed. Direct tensile numerical simulations were carried out to investigate the effect of calcite veins at different angles on the fine‐scale damage process and mechanical properties of shale. The experimental results show that the tensile capacity of the shale increases with the increase in calcite veins. Depending on the dip angle of the calcite vein, the damage pattern of the shale is divided into three types of damage: pull‐off damage along the calcite vein, jagged damage, and horizontal damage perpendicular to the loading method. At high dip angles, the shale damage is more intense and the fracture network more complex. The temporal and spatial characteristics of the acoustic emissions provide a good indication of the microscopic behavior of the shale specimens during the damage process. The box dimension method was used to calculate the fractal dimension of the shale specimens at the final damage, and it was found that the damage was more intense and the fracture network was more complex at high dip angles, and there was an angular threshold.

Abstract Circular RNAs (circRNAs) have been implicated in tumorigenesis and progression of various cancers. However, the underlying mechanisms of circRNAs in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) have not been fully elucidated. Herein, a new oncogenic circRNA, hsa_circ_0070039 (circNUP54), was identified to be significantly upregulated in HCC through circRNA sequencing. As verified in 68 HCC samples, circNUP54 overexpression was correlated with aggressive cancerous behaviors and poor outcomes. Moreover, the function experiments showed that knockdown of circNUP54 inhibited the malignant progression of HCC in vitro and in vivo, whereas overexpression of circNUP54 had the opposite role. Mechanistic investigations carried out by RNA pull-down, RNA immunoprecipitation, and immunofluorescence revealed that circNUP54 interacted with the RNA-binding protein Hu-antigen R (HuR) and promoted its cytoplasmic export. The cytoplasmic accumulation of HuR stabilized the downstream BIRC3 mRNA through its binding to the 3′ UTR region. Consequently, the encoded protein of BIRC3, cellular inhibitor of apoptosis 2 (cIAP2), proceeded to activate the NF-κB signal pathway and ultimately contributed to HCC progression. In addition, depletion of BIRC3 rescued the pro-tumorigenic effect of circNUP54 on HCC cells. Overall, this study demonstrated that circNUP54 facilitates HCC progression via regulating the HuR/BIRC3/NF-κB axis, which may serve as a promising therapeutic target for HCC treatment.

Due to low immobilized ligand density, limited binding capacity, and severe interference from serum proteins, developing ideal peptide-based biomaterials for precise recognition and in vivo analysis of biopharmaceuticals remains a huge challenge. In this study, mimotope peptide modified pompon mum-like biomimetic magnetic microparticles (MMPs, 3.8 μm) that mimic the specific functionalities of CD20 on malignant B cells were developed for the first time. Benefit from the numerous ligand binding sites (Ni2+) on the pompon mum-like MMPs, these novel materials achieved ≥10 times higher peptide ligand densities (>2300 mg/g) and antibody binding capacities (1380 mg/g) compared to previous reported biomaterials. Leveraging the high specificity of the mimotope peptide, rituximab can be precisely recognized and enriched from cell culture media or serum samples. We also established an LC‒MS/MS method using the MMPs for tracking rituximab biotransformation in patient serum. Intriguingly, deamidation of Asn55 and Asn33, as well as oxidation of Met81 and Met34 were observed at the key complementarity determining regions of rituximab, which could potentially influence antibody function and require careful monitoring. Overall, these versatile biomimetic MMPs demonstrate superior recognition and enrichment capabilities for target antibodies, offering interesting possibilities for biotransformation analysis of biopharmaceuticals in patient serum.

In the wave of digital transformation, digital economy, as one of the core growth poles of the national economy, which is becoming a new driving force to promote economic development. In view of the problem of the unbalanced development of China's digital economy, and to construct an indicator system for the level of digital economic development. The study is based on the panel data of 30 provinces (Tibet is not included in the study due to missing data) from 2013 to 2021, and comprehensively utilizes the entropy method, the Tyrell index and the Moran index method, the regional level of China's digital economic development is measured. And based on this, it further reveals the regional differences in China's digital economic development and the dynamic evolution characteristics of source and distribution. The purpose of this study is to provide practical experience and effective measures for promoting the coordinated development of digital economy in various regions and narrowing the regional digital divide. The study shows that the level of China's digital economy development has been increasing, and the digital economy has become the main engine of national economic development. The development of China's digital economy shows significant positive spatial dependence, spatial agglomeration and regional imbalance, and the development of the digital economy faces the problem of digital divide. The regional differences in the level of China's digital economy development are mainly due to inter-regional differences, and there is a trend of gradual reduction. There is also a certain degree of ups and downs in the process of regional digital economy development, and its spatial heterogeneity and convergence characteristics need to be further studied.

Abstract Electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a promising strategy to solve and mitigate the coming energy shortage and global environmental pollution. Searching for efficient electrocatalysts for HER remains challenging through traditional trial‐and‐error methods from numerous potential material candidates. Theoretical high throughput calculation assisted by machine learning is a possible method to screen excellent HER electrocatalysts effectively. This will pave the way for high‐efficiency and low‐price electrocatalyst findings. In this review, we comprehensively introduce the machine learning workflow and standard models for hydrogen reduction reactions. This mainly illustrates how machine learning is used in catalyst filtration and descriptor exploration. Subsequently, several applications, including surface electrocatalysts, two‐dimensional (2D) electrocatalysts, and single/dual atom electrocatalysts using machine learning in electrocatalytic HER, are highlighted and introduced. Finally, the corresponding challenge and perspective for machine learning in electrocatalytic hydrogen reduction reactions are concluded. We hope this critical review can provide a comprehensive understanding of machine learning for HER catalyst design and guide the future theoretical and experimental investigation of HER catalyst findings.

Bamboo is a great building material due to its low carbon and environmental friendless. The connection performance of beam-column joints had an impact on the seismic performance of the whole structure. The beam-column connection performance is critical in earthquakes. Steel-engineered timber connections have good seismic properties, and the properties of bamboo and timber are very similar. Therefore, the form of wood structure connection can be used in bamboo structures. The type of member materials used and the connection forms applied determine the structure elastic behavior. Common engineered bamboo has been introduced, and the current connection form of engineered timber has been summarized in this paper. Secondly, research on the indicators of connection performance under cyclic loads has been introduced, including damage forms, strength, ductility, and energy dissipation capacity. Thirdly, the traits of various types of connections are presented, and this paper could be taken as a reference for future studies on connections in steel-engineered bamboo structures.

Social dysfunction is a risk factor for several neuropsychiatric illnesses. Previous studies have shown that the lateral septum (LS)-related pathway plays a critical role in mediating social behaviors. However, the role of the connections between the LS and its downstream brain regions in social behaviors remains unclear. In this study, we conducted a three-chamber test using electrophysiological and chemogenetic approaches in mice to determine how LS projections to ventral CA1 (vCA1) influence sociability. Our results showed that gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-ergic neurons were activated following social experience, and that social behaviors were enhanced by chemogenetic modulation of these neurons. Moreover, LS GABAergic neurons extended their functional neural connections via vCA1 glutamatergic pyramidal neurons, and regulating LSGABA→vCA1Glu neural projections affected social behaviors, which were impeded by suppressing LS-projecting vCA1 neuronal activity or inhibiting GABAA receptors in vCA1. These findings support the hypothesis that LS inputs to the vCA1 can control social preferences and social novelty behaviors. These findings provide new insights regarding the neural circuits that regulate sociability.

Abstract To investigate the hydraulic fracture extension pattern of single-hole shale during hydraulic fracturing under fluid–solid coupling, this paper utilizes seepage–stress–damage coupling software to establish a mechanical model of hydraulic fracture initiation in single-hole shale under different pore pressure increments in seven groups. The results reveal that under the action of a single-hole pressure gradient, shale is destabilized and destroyed by shale instability after two damage degradations under the coupled action of hydraulic and peripheral pressures, the fracture network is fully developed, and the stress decreases sharply. The final damage pattern of the hydraulic fracture distribution is categorized into two types: “X” and “Y”. The hydraulic gradient under hydraulic fracturing is distributed as a closed-loop strip, the hydraulic gradient decreases layer by layer from the inside to the outside, the seepage field and stress field interact with each other, and the pore water pressure and stress are coupled with each other, resulting in increasingly complete fracture development.

Background Pheochromocytoma is an adrenal medullary neuroendocrine tumor that rarely metastasizes to the spine. Currently, its specific treatment methods still present challenges. Case Description A 41‐year‐old male patient who underwent left total adrenalectomy due to pheochromocytoma 3 years ago presented with lower back pain, accompanied by numbness and decreased muscle strength in both legs, as well as decreased sensation. Abnormal transmittance of the L3 vertebral body could be seen on anterior–posterior and lateral lumbar X‐rays, irregular bone destruction of the L3 vertebral body was found on CT, and an MRI scan showed that the tumor was located within the L3 vertebral body, protruding into the spinal canal and compressing the epidural sac. No recurrence was found in the abdomen. Preoperatively, perform local embolization of the blood vessels supplying the tumor. First, the L2‐3 intervertebral disc, L3‐4 intervertebral disc and L3 vertebral body were removed using an anterior approach, the whole tumor was removed, and some of the vertebrae were taken for pathological examination and replaced with a 3D‐printed prosthesis. Then, four pedicle screws were placed in the bilateral pedicles of L2 and L4 using the posterior approach, pre‐bent connecting rods were installed to replace the bone cortex of the lamina and articular process followed by bone graft fusion of the interlaminar and facet joints. The postoperative results were satisfactory, and there were no perioperative complications. Conclusion Lumbar pheochromocytoma metastasis is rare, difficult to treat, and should be considered in spinal metastases' differential diagnoses so early diagnosis can be made based on medical history and imaging. Preoperative local vascular imaging and embolization of the blood supply vessels were performed. After total en‐bloc spondylectomy of the tumor during surgery, a prosthesis was implanted and combined with pedicle screw fixation to reconstruct spinal biomechanical stability, achieving satisfactory results. Therefore, 3D printed artificial vertebral bodies are a good choice for treating adrenal pheochromocytoma lumbar metastasis. The key to successful treatment is close interdisciplinary collaboration in formulating rigorous comprehensive perioperative plans.

Abstract Lacticaseibacillus is one of the predominant microorganisms in gut from human and animal, and the lacticaseibacillus have effective applications against the viral diarrhea of piglets in the farm. However, the function and the concrete cell single pathways of the active ingredient from lacticaseibacillus was not clear within anti-infection in the postbiotics research. Here, we compared the biological function of extracellular polysaccharides (EPS) purified from lacticaseibacillus casei (L. casei) and gene editing lacticaseibacillus casei with the CRISPER-Cas9 technology, which were with the ability of antioxidation and anti-inflammation, and the EPS could also inhibit the ROS production within the Porcine Small Intestinal Epithelial Cells-J2 (IPEC-J2). Interestingly, we found that both of EPS and genome editing lacticaseibacillus casei could specifically target the IFN-λ expression in the IPEC-J2, which was beneficial against the PEDV infection in the virus replication and production with the qRT-PCR and indirect immunofluorescence methods. Finally, the STAT3 cell single pathway was stimulated to transcribe IFN-λ with the EPS to elucidate the detailed mechanism of activating type III IFN signals receptor of IL-10R2, which play the function between anti-inflammation and anti-virus in the PEDV infection. Taken together, our research linked a postbiotics of EPS with the antiviral infection of PEDV, which suggest that the lacticaseibacillus itself still have displayed the potential immunomodulatory activities, and highlight the immunomodulatory potential of EPS-producing microbes. Abstract Background Our previous randomized controlled trial (RCT) have demonstrated that intermittent Pringle’s maneuver (IPM) with a 25-min ischemic interval can be applied safely and efficiently in open or laparoscopic hepatectomy in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. But prolonging the hepatic inflow blocking time will inevitably aggravate the ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) caused by systemic response. This RCT aims to evaluate the effect of administration of dexamethasone versus placebo before clamping the hilar pedicle on postoperative liver function, inflammatory response, and perioperative outcomes among HCC patients undergoing liver resection with 25-min hepatic inflow occlusion. Methods and analysis This will be a randomized, dual-arm, parallel-group, double-blinded trial. All eligible and consecutive patients are coming from a regional medical center who are diagnosed with HCC and underwent radical R0/R1 resection. All participates are randomly allocated in dexamethasone group or placebo group. All surgeons, anesthesiologists, and outcome assessors will be blinded to allocation status. Primary endpoints are transaminase-based postoperative hepatic injury on seven consecutive days after surgery and assessed by their peak values as well as area under the curve (AUC) of the postoperative course of aminotransferases. Secondary endpoints are postoperative total bilirubin (TBil), coagulation function, inflammatory cytokines and their respective peaks, intraoperative blood loss, postoperative hospital stay, morbidity, and mortality. The above parameters will be compared using the corresponding statistical approach. Subgroup analysis will be performed according to the liver cirrhosis and major hepatectomy. Discussion Based on our previous study, we will explore further the effect of glucocorticoid administration on attenuating the surgical stress response in order to follow securely 25-min hepatic inflow occlusion. Therefore, the trial protocol is reasonable and the results of the trial may be clinically significant. Trial registration This trial was registered on 3 December 2022, in the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry ( http://www.chictr.org.cn ), ChiCTR2200066381. The protocol version is V1.0 (20221104).

Abstract Background The most severe complication after posterior single-segment lumbar interbody fusion and internal fixation (PIFIF) surgery for degenerative lumbar diseases is deep surgical site infection (DSSI). Preoperatively diagnosing such complications proves to be challenging. Platelets, as acute-phase reactants, undergo changes in response to infections and inflammation. This study aims to assess whether platelet indices can further aid in the diagnosis of DSSI. Methods A single-center retrospective study was conducted from January 2016 to February 2021 at Xi'an Jiaotong University-Affiliated Honghui Hospital, involving 83 patients who underwent revision surgery after PIFIF due to lumbar degenerative diseases. Among them, 24 patients were diagnosed with DSSI based on combined bacterial culture and imaging data. Preoperative complete serological indicators including erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP), and platelet count and mean platelet volume ratio (P/M ratio) were analyzed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis to determine cutoff values, sensitivity, and specificity. This was done to further assess the ability of these serological indicators to identify the occurrence of DSSI after PIFIF. Results There were no significant differences in baseline demographic characteristics between the two patient groups (P > 0.05). Future offshore wind engineering raises demands on higher reliability, better power generating performance, as well as lower manufacturing and transportation cost. This paper presents a direct-driven permanent magnet generator (DDPMG) with modular fractional-slot concentrated winding (MFSCW), to meet the large-scale, low-cost and high-reliability requirements of offshore wind power applications. The corresponding pole–slot combination method and electromagnetic characteristics analysis for this novel generator are proposed and performed in detail, including the winding coefficient analysis, magnetomotive force (MMF) harmonic analysis, cogging torque analysis, finite element simulations and generator parameter optimization. After finite element simulations, a 3.3 MW prototype MFSCW-DDPMG is developed to validate the proposed scheme. The results provide a complete and feasible scheme of pole–slot​ combination and electromagnetic design for future MFSCW-DDPMG engineering applications.

Understanding the effects of limited irrigation on wheat yield and root characteristics is crucial for maintaining sustainable agricultural development in the groundwater-overexploitation zone of the North China Plain. We evaluated these effects in two winter wheat cultivars: Shimai22 (SM22, deep root system) and Shinong086 (SN086, shallow root system). Irrigation treatments were traditional irrigation twice (W2), no irrigation (W0), and single irrigation (W1) based on the number of leaves that unfolded in spring (3 L, 4 L, 5 L, and 6 L). Wheat grain yield, root characteristics, and root-shoot relationships were investigated according to growth chamber and field experiments. The results showed that the wheat yield of W0 and W1 were 50.9% and 23.0% less than that of W2, respectively. However, SM22 and SN086 exhibited the smallest yield reduction effect under 4 L and 3 L, with significant reductions of 10.4% and 16.2% compared to W2, respectively. The results of the growth chamber experiment showed that compared to W2, limited irrigation reduced the total root quantity, whereas no significant reductions were observed with the 3 L and 4 L. Meanwhile, SN086 increased root distribution in the deep layer at early single irrigation. Moreover, limited irrigation mainly affected the roots in the soil depth of 0–40 cm. Therefore, we analyzed the effects of limited irrigation on the wheat root system of the 0–40 cm soil depth under certain field conditions. Similarly, we found that limited irrigation reduced wheat root quantity. However, root weight density (RMD), root length density (RLD), and root surface area density (RSD) at 3 L and 4 L were significantly higher than those at 5 L and 6 L at the booting; those at 5 L and 6 L were significantly higher than those at 3 L and 4 L at milk ripening. The root quantity of SN086 was significantly higher than that of SM22. Root–shoot relationships showed that irrigation increased RMD, RSD, and RLD at the booting stage, while augmenting aboveground biomass, spike number, kernel number per spike, and grain yield. The earlier irrigation time in W1 was beneficial for increasing the drought resistance of roots and shoots; however, the later irrigation time resulted in higher RLD, RSD, and RMD at the milk-ripening stage, increasing kernel weight. Furthermore, SM22 had a lower root–shoot ratio, and SN086 had a higher root–shoot ratio under high-yield conditions. Therefore, 4 L single irrigation in spring for deep-rooted cultivars or 3 L single irrigation in spring for shallow-rooted cultivars is a suitable water-saving irrigation method to promote the establishment of the wheat root system, improve the drought resistance of the root system, increase aboveground biomass, and prolong spike development time, increasing spike and kernel numbers to improve the grain yield of winter wheat.

Summary: The production of high-demand syngas with tunable ratios by CO2 electroreduction has attracted considerable research interest. However, it is challenging to balance the evolution performance of H2 and CO with wide H2/CO ratios, while maintaining high efficiency. Herein, nitrogen-coordinated hierarchical porous carbon spheres with varying phosphorus content (PxNC-T) are assembled to regulate syngas production performance. The precise introduction of P modulates the local charge distribution of nitrogen-coordinated carbons, thereby accelerating the protonation process of ∗CO2-to-∗COOH and promoting moderate H∗ adsorption. Specifically, syngas with wide H2/CO ratios (0.60–4.98) is obtained over a low potential range (−0.46 to −0.86 V vs. RHE). As a representative, P1.0NC-900 presents a remarkable current density (−152 mA cm−2) at −1.0 V vs. RHE in flow cells and delivers a decent peak power density (1.93 mW cm−2) in reversible Zn-CO2 batteries. Our work provides valuable insights into the rational design of carbon-based catalysts for CO2 reduction.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has a high incidence and dismal prognosis, making it a significant global health burden. To change this, the development of new therapeutic strategies is imminent. The claudin (CLDN) family, as key components of tight junctions (TJs), plays an important role in the initiation and development of cancer. Dysregulated expression of CLDNs leads to loss of intercellular adhesion and aberrant cell signaling, which are closely related to cancer cell invasion, migration, and epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT). CLDN1, CLDN3, CLDN4, CLDN5, CLDN6, CLDN7, CLDN9, CLDN10, CLDN11, CLDN14, and CLDN17 are aberrantly expressed in HCC, which drives the progression of the disease. Consequently, they have tremendous potential as prognostic indicators and therapeutic targets. This article summarizes the aberrant expression, molecular mechanisms, and clinical application studies of different subtypes of CLDNs in HCC, with a particular emphasis on CLDN1.

Diagnosing water conditions timely and accurately is crucial for seasonal irrigation scheduling in crop production. The purpose of this study was to establish robust water deficit models of winter wheat in different growing seasons by combining unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) multispectral and thermal images. In 2021 and 2022, a water deficit field experiment on winter wheat was carried out in Hebei Province, China. Five-band multispectral and thermal images were obtained with a UAV at six key growth stages of winter wheat. Fourteen vegetation indices (VIs) and two thermal indices (TIs) were calculated. Simultaneously, wheat stomatal conductance and soil water content were measured. On this basis, normalized stomatal conductance (NGS) and effective water content (EWC) were calculated. TIs had the highest correlation with NGS and EWC at early growth stages, whereas ratio vegetation index (RVI), modified simple ratio index (MSR) and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) were highly correlated at later stages. Partial least squares (PLS), support vector machine (SVM) and gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT) were used to predict NGS and EWC for each growth stage, with the data of 2021 as the training set and the data of 2022 as independent test set. In general, GBDT outperformed PLS and SVM, and NGS was better predicted than EWC. Including VIs and TIs effectively improved the estimation accuracy of the predictive models. The test set results of the NGS and EWC models built by GBDT achieved the best performance in flowering stage (coefficient of determination (R2) = 0.88, root mean square error (RMSE) = 0.08, normalized root mean square error (NRMSE) = 14.7%) and filling stage (R2 = 0.90, RMSE = 0.05, NRMSE = 15.9%), respectively. The models of the post-heading stage were better than those of the pre-heading stage for both NGS and EWC. This study provides a robust method for diagnosing water stress only using UAV remote sensing data.

Background: Corn peptides, a novel food prepared from corn gluten meal (CGM) by enzymatic hydrolysis or microbial fermentation, have attracted considerable interest owing to their various bioactive properties. However, the underlying mechanism of corn peptides attenuate non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) remains unclear. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effect of corn peptides in NAFLD and to decipher the underlying mechanisms. Design: NAFLD was induced by a high-fat diet (HFD) for 10 weeks. Corn peptides were administered during the period. Human hepatocellular carcinomas (HepG2) cells induced by free fatty acids were used for this mechanism study. Results: Corn peptides alleviated HFD-induced histopathological changes, disorders of lipid metabolism, and mitochondrial damage. Moreover, corn peptides blocked mitophagy suppression by HFD based on the increased LC3, ATG7 expressions, as well as decreased P62 levels. Corn peptides increased the expression of proteins involved in fatty acid β-oxidation, such as PPARα and PGC-1α. Corn peptides also improved the Ser/Thr kinase PINK1 (PINK1) and the E3 ubiquitin ligase Parkin (Parkin) translocation to mitochondria, which is confirmed by immunofluorescence. Furthermore, stable knockdown of PINK1 by PINK1 SiRNA in HepG2 inhibited PINK1-Parkin-associated mitophagy and resulted in lipid accumulation. Conclusion: Corn peptides improved cell injury and ameliorated mitochondrial dysfunction and lipid accumulation via PINK1/Parkin-mediated autophagy in NAFLD. Thus, corn peptides could be a promising nutritional molecule with natural functions for preventing NAFLD.

Abstract Under the global carbon neutrality initiative, carbon emissions from the transportation sector are becoming increasingly prominent due to the growth in vehicle ownership. And electric mobility may be a potentially effective measure to reduce road traffic carbon emissions and achieve a green transformation of transportation. This paper systematically collates the relevant carbon accounting standards for the automotive industry and elaborates the current status of road transport greenhouse gas emissions by combining the data from the International Energy Agency. And by comparing the lifecycle carbon footprint of various energy types of vehicles, the necessity and feasibility of electric mobility to reduce carbon emissions are discussed. However, the comparison of vehicle lifecycle carbon footprints shows that electric vehicles (EVs) are not as environmentally friendly as expected, although they can significantly reduce road traffic carbon emissions. The high carbon emissions from the manufacturing process of the core components of EVs, especially the power battery, reduce the low‐carbon potential of electric mobility. Therefore, the carbon emission reduction strategies and outcomes of automakers in the automotive industry chain have been further reviewed. Finally, focusing on vehicle power batteries, this article reviews the technologies such as refined management and echelon utilization that can make EVs more environmentally friendly and promote carbon neutrality in the transportation sector.

Dynamic mechanical behaviors of strain-hardening cementitious composites (SHCC), considering the influence of strain rates, were investigated using split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB). Full-field strain evolution and cracking behavior of SHCC under high strain rate loading were investigated using high-speed digital image correlation (DIC) technology. Additionally, the damage properties of SHCC induced by high strain rate loading were analyzed using X-CT images and SEM observation. The results show that dynamic peak stress, strain, energy absorption capacity and dynamic increase factor (DIF) of SHCC are increased with the increase of strain rate. Full-field strain evolution of SHCC during the SHPB test demonstrates that the expansion in the vertical is larger than compression in the lateral under high strain rate loading. According to the X-CT images, dynamic load with a relatively higher strain rate will induce more fine cracks, and the number of cracks inside the specimen is more than on the surface. Moreover, plastic deformation of PVA fibers occurs under high strain rate loading based on SEM observation.

Objective Multi‐segmental thoracolumbar fracture (MSF) generally refers to fractures occurring in two or more segments of the thoracolumbar spine. With the development of minimally invasive concept, there is little research on its application in the field of MSF. The purpose of this study is to compare two minimally invasive surgical techniques and determine which one is more suitable for treating patients with neurologically intact MSF. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 49 MSF patients with intact nerves who were admitted from January 2017 to February 2019. Among them, 25 cases underwent percutaneous pedicle screw fixation (PPSF), and 24 cases underwent Wiltse approach pedicle screw fixation (WAPSF). The operation time, number of fixed segments, blood loss, length of incision, postoperative ambulation time, accuracy of pedicle screw placement, facet joint violation (FJV), number of C‐arm exposures, as well as pre‐ and postoperative visual analogue scale (VAS), Oswestry disability index (ODI), local Cobb's angle (LCA), and percentage of anterior vertebral body height (PAVBH) were recorded for both groups. Paired sample t‐test was used for intra‐group comparison before and after surgery while independent sample t‐test was used for inter‐group comparison. Results The differences in the number of fixed segments, intraoperative bleeding, postoperative bed time, accuracy rate of pedicle screw placement, VAS, and ODI between the two groups were not statistically significant (p > 0.05).
