Neurodegeneration is becoming one of the leading causes of death worldwide as the population expands and grows older. There is a growing desire to understand the mechanisms behind prion proteins as well as the prion-like proteins that make up neurodegenerative diseases (NDs), including Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD). Both amyloid-β (Aβ) and hyperphosphorylated tau (p-tau) proteins behave in ways similar to those of the infectious form of the prion protein, PrPSc, such as aggregating, seeding, and replicating under not yet fully understood mechanisms, thus the designation of prion-like. This review aims to highlight the shared mechanisms between prion-like proteins and prion proteins in the structural variations associated with aggregation and disease development. These mechanisms largely focus on the dysregulation of protein homeostasis, self-replication, and protein aggregation, and this knowledge could contribute to diagnoses and treatments for the given NDs.

Traditional methods for algae removal in drinking water treatment, such as coagulation and sedimentation, face challenges due to the negative charge on algae cells’ surfaces, resulting in ineffective removal. Ultrasonic cavitation has shown promise in enhancing coagulation performance by disrupting extracellular polymer structures and improving cyanobacteria removal through various mechanisms like shear force and free radical reactions. However, the short lifespan and limited mass transfer distance of free radicals in conventional ultrasonic treatment lead to high energy consumption, limiting widespread application. To overcome these limitations and enhance energy efficiency, advanced carbon-based materials were developed and tested. Nitrogen-doped functional groups on nanodiamond surfaces were found to boost sonosensitivity by increasing the production of reactive oxygen species at the sonosensitizer-water interface. Utilizing low-power ultrasound (0.12 W/mL) in combination with N-ND treatment for 5 min, removal rates of Microcystis aeruginosa cells in water exceeded 90 %, with enhanced removal of algal organic matters and microcystins in water. Visualization through confocal microscopy highlighted the role of positively charged nitrogen-doped nanodiamonds in aggregating algae cells. The synergy between cell capturing and catalysis of N-ND indicates that efficient mass transfer of free radicals from the sonosensitizer’s surface to the microalgae’s surface is critical for promoting cyanobacteria floc formation. This study underscores the potential of employing a low-intensity ultrasound and N-ND system in effectively improving algae removal in water treatment processes.

Powder bed fusion (PBF), along with subsequent heat treatment, plays a crucial role in enhancing the impact toughness of FeCoNiCrMo0.2 high-entropy alloys (HEAs) and expanding their potential applications in field for high-speed deformation. In this study, the dynamic-mechanical properties and microstructure of the as-built PBF–FeCoNiCrMo0.2 HEAs and quenched PBF–FeCoNiCrMo0.2 HEAs heated at 600–750 °C for 8 h were investigated. As the heating temperature increases, the columnar grains and cellular structures undergo coarsening and the dislocation density gradually decreases. Moreover, higher heating temperatures facilitate the precipitation of Mo-rich second phases. This occurrence can be primarily attributed to the segregation of Mo at the boundaries of the as-built specimens. Consequently, in the quenched specimens, the μ phases are predominantly distributed along the boundaries of the cellular structures. In the quenched Q700 specimen (heated at 700 °C for 8h), the size and volume fraction of the μ phases are measured to be 63.4 nm and 3.59%, respectively. Additionally, under the same condition, the Q700 specimens also exhibited a relatively slight increase in the size of the cellular structures. The impact energy absorption, dynamic yield strength, and dynamic compressive strength of the Q700 quenched specimens were found to be 210.1 MJ/m3, 1066 MPa, and 1649 MPa at a strain rate of 1840 s−1. These values represent a dramatic improvement of 38.1%, 52.7%, and 14.7% higher in comparison to those of the as-built specimens. Under impact deformation, the presence of the μ phases plays a significant role in impeding the movement of dislocations by acting as a pinning agent for the boundaries of the cellular structures, thereby enhancing the strength. Simultaneously, the cellular structures were significantly elongated to form the deformation bands and to coordinate the impact deformation, leading to good impact energy absorption. In combination, the synergistic strengthening and toughening effect of the μ phases and the elongated cellular structures contribute to a remarkable improvement in the impact toughness of the PBF-HEAs.

BackgroundAtherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), a leading cause of global fatalities, has inconsistent findings regarding the impact of muscle symptoms despite promising clinical trials involving PCSK9 inhibitors (PCSK9i) and siRNA as potential therapeutic options.MethodsThe databases EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane, and ClinicalTrials.gov were thoroughly searched without any restrictions on language. Review Manager 5.3 software was utilized to calculate relative risks with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for dichotomous data and mean differences or standardized mean differences with 95%CIs for continuous data. To evaluate publication bias, Egger's test was employed using Stata/SE software.ResultsThis analysis included 26 studies comprising 28 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving a total of 100,193 patients, and 4 different lipid-lowering therapy combinations. For events with creatine kinase >3ULN, evolocumab and alirocumab demonstrated significant advantages compared to inclisiran. Evolocumab showed the best results in terms of both new muscle symptom events and creatine kinase >3ULN.ConclusionsBased on this network meta-analysis (NMA) results, evolocumab has emerged as a promising treatment option for patients with hyperlipidemia and muscle disorders compared to other PCSK9 inhibitors and inclisiran.Systematic Review RegistrationPROSPERO [CRD42023459558].

The p53, a pivotal tumor suppressor, regulates various cellular responses, including DNA repair and apoptosis. Normally, p53 levels are low due to murine double minute clone 2 (MDM2) mediated polyubiquitination. However, stress signals disrupt p53-MDM2 interaction, stabilizing p53 and activating target genes. Dysfunctional p53 is common in cancers, especially colorectal cancer (CRC), with TP53 mutations in 43% of tumors. These mutations impair wild-type p53 function or confer novel activities, promoting cancer progression. Despite drugs targeting p53 entering trials, understanding wild-type and mutant p53 functions is crucial for novel CRC therapies. P53 mutations not only impact DNA repair and apoptosis but also play a crucial role in tumor immunotherapy. While rendering tumors resistant to chemotherapy, p53 mutations provide opportunities for immunotherapy due to neoantigen-rich tumors. Additionally, p53 mutations influence tumor microenvironment cells, such as fibroblasts and immunosuppressive cells, through p53-mediated signaling pathways. Investigating p53 mutations in tumor therapy is vital for personalized medicine and immunotherapy. In cancer treatment research, scientists explore drugs and strategies to restore or enhance p53 function. Targeting wild-type p53 aims to restore DNA repair and cell cycle control, while targeting mutant p53 seeks new drugs to inhibit its detrimental effects, advancing tumor treatment. Understanding p53 drugs and strategies is crucial for cancer therapy progress.

Background. Ouabain, a Na+, K+-ATPase inhibitor, is elevated in hypertensive patients. Evidence suggests ouabain contributes to hypertension mainly through activation of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS). Renal nerves play a vital role in the regulation of SNS activity, so we hypothesize that renal denervation may attenuate the development of ouabain-induced hypertension. Methods and Results. Forty Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into following groups (n = 10 each): control group (sham surgery plus intraperitoneal saline injection), RDN group (renal denervation (RDN) plus intraperitoneal saline injection), ouabain group (sham surgery plus intraperitoneal ouabain injection), and ouabain + RDN group (RDN plus intraperitoneal ouabain injection). High-entropy alloys (HEAs) fabricated by powder metallurgy are considered to exhibit extremely-great potential application values in the field for high-speed impact deformation due to their uniform microstructures and compositions. The mechanical behavior of a powder-metallurgy-fabricated (PM) CoCrFeMnNi HEA was investigated at room temperature with strain rates ranging from 1200 s−1 to 2800 s−1. It was found that the serration behavior and shear localization of the alloy under dynamic conditions occurred. Results also indicated that the serrated flow took place in the PM CoCrFeMnNi HEA during mechanical deformation at high strain rates (>1000 s−1) and became more pronounced as the strain rate increased. Furthermore, it was determined that the yield-strength values of the PM CoCrFeMnNi HEA were sensitive to strain rates, where the values increased from 500 MPa to 700 MPa when the strain rates increased from 1200 s−1 to 2800 s−1. Shear bands with a width of about 20 μm were generated in the PM CoCrFeMnNi HEA after the shear stress reached a maximum value of 635 MPa, which corresponded to a nominal strain of about 8.71. Nanotwins and ultrafine-equiaxed grains with a diameter of about 150 nm also developed at the core of the shear band during deformation. The results revealed that the strength of the shear band was much higher than that of the matrix grain. Nanotwins in the shear band were composed of a single face-centered-cubic (FCC) structure with the twin plane of (1¯11¯), which could be formed via a rotational dynamic recrystallization (RDR).

Abstract Fine‐grained classification is a challenging task due to the difficulty of finding discriminative features and the localization of feature regions. To handle these challenges, a novel visual classification framework on panoramic attention mechanism that combines multiple attention networks to locate and identify features with more semantic interest is proposed. Firstly, based on the classical convolutional neural network, the global information of the image feature is expressed by linear fusion. Secondly, the foreground attention branch is used to further extract the distinguishing details of the salient features. Then, more features are mined from the complementary object area through the background attention branch to learn more perfect fine‐grained feature expression. Finally, three network branches are trained together to enhance the network's ability to express representative features of fine‐grained images. Our model can be viewed as a multi‐branch network, which benefits each other and optimizes the network together. Experiments were conducted on CUB‐200‐2011, Stanford Dogs and FGVC‐Aircraft datasets, and the accuracy was used as the quantitative measurement. Experimental results show that the proposed method has the highest accuracy; the average accuracy is 89.8%. It is effective and superior to the current advanced methods.

Non-coding RNAs, including microRNAs, long non-coding RNAs, and circular RNAs, have been identified as crucial regulators of various biological processes through epigenetic regulation, transcriptional regulation, and post-transcriptional regulation. Growing evidence suggests that dysregulation and activation of non-coding RNAs are closely associated with tumor angiogenesis, a process essential for tumor growth and metastasis and a major contributor to cancer-related mortality. Therefore, understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying tumor angiogenesis is of utmost importance. Numerous studies have documented the involvement of different types of non-coding RNAs in the regulation of angiogenesis. This review provides an overview of how non-coding RNAs regulate tumor angiogenesis. Additionally, we discuss emerging strategies that exploit non-coding RNAs for anti-angiogenic therapy in cancer treatment. Ultimately, this review underscores the crucial role played by non-coding RNAs in tumor angiogenesis and highlights their potential as therapeutic targets for anti-angiogenic interventions against cancer.

Endometriosis is a common disease of the female reproductive system and has malignant features. Although endometriosis by itself is a benign disease, its erosive growth characteristics lead to severe pelvic pain and female infertility. Unfortunately, several aspects of the pathogenesis of endometriosis are still unclear. Furthermore, the clinical therapeutic methods are unsatisfactory. The recurrence rate of endometriosis is high. Accumulating evidence suggests that the onset and development of endometriosis are closely related to the abnormal function of the female autoimmune system, especially the function of some immune cells such as the aggregation of neutrophils, abnormal differentiation of macrophages, decreased cytotoxicity of NK cells, and abnormal function of T- and B-cell lines. Therefore, immunotherapy is probably a novel therapeutic strategy for endometriosis besides surgery and hormone therapy. However, information regarding the clinical application of immunotherapy in the treatment of endometriosis is very limited. This article aimed to review the effects of existing immunomodulators on the development of endometriosis, including immune cell regulators and immune factor regulators. These immunomodulators clinically or experimentally inhibit the pathogenesis and development of endometriosis lesions by acting on the immune cells, immune factors, or immune-related signaling pathways. Thus, immunotherapy is probably a novel and effective clinical treatment choice for endometriosis. Experimental studies of the detailed mechanism of immunotherapy and large-scale clinical studies about the effectiveness and safety of this promising therapeutic method are required in the future.

BackgroundSuccinate dehydrogenase (SDH), one of the key enzymes in the tricarboxylic acid cycle, is mainly found in the mitochondria. SDH consists of four subunits encoding SDHA, SDHB, SDHC, and SDHD. The biological function of SDH is significantly related to cancer progression. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common malignant tumors globally, whose most common histological subtype is colon adenocarcinoma (COAD). However, the correlation between SDH factors and COAD remains unclear.MethodsThe data on pan-cancer was obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed the prognostic ability of SDHs. The cBioPortal database reflected genetic variations of SDHs. The correlation analysis was conducted between SDHs and mitochondrial energy metabolism genes (MMGs) and the protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was built. Consequently, Univariate and Multivariate Cox Regression Analysis on SDHs and other clinical characteristics were conducted. A nomogram was established. The ssGSEA analysis visualized the association between SDHs and immune infiltration. Immunophenoscore (IPS) explored the correlation between SDHs and immunotherapy, and the correlation between SDHs and targeted therapy was investigated through Genomics of Drug Sensitivity in Cancer. Finally, qPCR and immunohistochemistry detected SDHs’ expression.ResultsAfter assessing SDHs differential expression in pan-cancer, we found that SDHB, SDHC, and SDHD benefit COAD patients. The cBioPortal database demonstrated that SDHA was the top gene in mutation frequency rank. Correlation analysis mirrored a strong link between SDHs and MMGs. We formulated a nomogram and found that SDHB, SDHC, SDHD, and clinical characteristics correlated with COAD patients’ survival. For T helper cells, Th2 cells, and Tem, SDHA, SDHB, SDHC, and SDHD were significantly enriched in the high expression group. Moreover, COAD patients with high SDHA expression were more suitable for immunotherapy. And COAD patients with different SDHs’ expression have different sensitivity to targeted drugs. Further verifying the gene and protein expression levels of SDHs, we found that the tissues were consistent with the bioinformatics analysis.ConclusionsOur study analyzed the expression and prognostic value of SDHs in COAD, explored the pathway mechanisms involved, and the immune cell correlations, indicating that SDHs might be biomarkers for COAD patients.

ABSTRACT The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has been an unprecedented public health disaster in human history, and its spike (S) protein is the major target for vaccines and antiviral drug development. Although widespread vaccination has been well established, the viral gene is prone to rapid mutation, resulting in multiple global spread waves. Therefore, specific antivirals are needed urgently, especially those against variants. In this study, the domain of the receptor binding motif (RBM) and fusion peptide (FP) (amino acids [aa] 436 to 829; denoted RBMFP) of the SARS-CoV-2 S protein was expressed as a recombinant RBMFP protein in Escherichia coli and identified as being immunogenic and antigenically active. Then, the RBMFP proteins were used for phage display to screen the novel affibody. After prokaryotic expression and selection, four novel affibody molecules (Z14, Z149, Z171, and Z327) were obtained. Through surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and pseudovirus neutralization assay, we showed that affibody molecules specifically bind to the RBMFP protein with high affinity and neutralize against SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirus infection. Especially, Z14 and Z171 displayed strong neutralizing activities against Delta and Omicron variants. Molecular docking predicted that affibody molecule interaction sites with RBM overlapped with ACE2. Thus, the novel affibody molecules could be further developed as specific neutralization agents against SARS-CoV-2 variants. IMPORTANCE SARS-CoV-2 and its variants are threatening the whole world. Although a full dose of vaccine injection showed great preventive effects and monoclonal antibody reagents have also been used for a specific treatment, the global pandemic persists. So, developing new vaccines and specific agents are needed urgently. In this work, we expressed the recombinant RBMFP protein as an antigen, identified its antigenicity, and used it as an antigen for affibody phage-display selection. After the prokaryotic expression, the specific affibody molecules were obtained and tested for pseudovirus neutralization. Results showed that the serum antibody induced by RBMFP neutralized Omicron variants. The screened affibody molecules specifically bound the RBMFP of SARS-CoV-2 with high affinity and neutralized the Delta and Omicron pseudovirus in vitro. So, the RBMFP induced serum provides neutralizing effects against pseudovirus in vitro, and the affibodies have the potential to be developed into specific prophylactic agents for SARS-CoV-2 and its variants.

Aims: Although previous studies have linked short-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) air pollution with various molecular biomarkers of cardiovascular system, limited evidence is available for indicators at clinical or subclinical levels. We examined the associations between short-term PM2.5 exposure and a range of clinical or subclinical indicators of cardiovascular health in general population. Methods and results: A longitudinal repeated-measure study was conducted among 247,640 participants who repeatedly visited health examination centers in 15 typical cities across China from 2013 to 2020. A total of 19 well-established indicators of cardiovascular risk or injury were evaluated and air quality data at nearest fixed-site monitors were collected. Linear mixed-effects models with distributed lag models were used to analyze the potentially lagged effects of PM2.5. The average daily PM2.5 concentration was 48 μg/m3 during the study period. PM2.5 exposure was associated with significant changes of 16 indicators with the effects generally peaked on lag 0 to 3 day. For an interquartile range (IQR) elevation (37 μg/m3) in PM2.5 concentrations over lag 0–7 day, the cumulative percentage changes were 0.50% to 1.27% in heart rates and blood pressure, 0.10% to 5.04% in inflammatory markers, −0.29% to 1.39% in blood viscosity parameters, −0.67% to 3.45% in blood lipids, 0.89% in blood homocysteine, 0.13% to 0.78% in myocardial enzymes, and 3.03% in pulse wave velocity. These associations were not substantially changed after adjusting concomitant exposures to gaseous pollutants. Conclusion: Short-term exposure to PM2.5 may induce early cardiovascular effects in general population, including acute inflammation, myocardial injury, increased blood viscosity, vascular stiffness and hyperlipidemia.

RSK1, an essential cellular kinase for Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) replication, is highly phosphorylated and SUMOylated during KSHV lytic cycle, which determine the substrate phosphorylation and specificity of RSK1, respectively. However, the SUMO E3 ligase responsible for attaching SUMO to RSK1 has not yet been identified. By genome-wide screening, we found that KSHV ORF45 is necessary and sufficient to enhance RSK1 SUMOylation. Mechanistically, KSHV ORF45 binds to SUMOs via two classic SUMO-interacting motifs (SIMs) and functions as a SIM-dependent SUMO E3 ligase for RSK1. Mutations on these ORF45 SIMs resulted in much lower lytic gene expressions, viral DNA replication, and mature progeny virus production. Interestingly, KSHV ORF45 controls RSK1 SUMOylation and phosphorylation via two separated functional regions: SIMs and amino acid 17-90, respectively, which do not affect each other. Similar to KSHV ORF45, ORF45 of Rhesus Macaque Rhadinovirus has only one SIM and also increases RSK1 SUMOylation in a SIM-dependent manner, while other ORF45 homologues do not have this function. Our work characterized ORF45 as a novel virus encoded SUMO E3 ligase, which is required for ORF45-RSK1 axis-mediated KSHV lytic gene expression.

Case revision has always been challenging in case-based reasoning (CBR) processes. Most CBR methods used for analyzing geological disasters fail to consider the spatial relationships among geological environmental factors. Therefore, conventional case revision rules do not allow for effective case-based reasoning for geologic disaster assessment. In this study, we first establish a spatial case library of historical geological disasters. Subsequently, these spatial cases are organized, reduced, and weighted using spatial clustering, genetic algorithm and rough set hybrid algorithms, respectively. Based on these efforts, we propose a retrieval method for the spatial cases and evaluate the proposed solution for a target case. Finally, a geological disaster assessment model possessing a spatial case revision function is obtained by combining geographic information system (GIS) technology with the genetic algorithm. Experiments and applications show that our spatial revision approach is effective and that it exhibits a higher classification performance compared to traditional data mining methods with regard to geological disaster assessment. The approach also exhibits a higher accuracy and efficiency than typical spatial CBR or case revision models do. The results of this study thus facilitate rapid geological disaster assessment, making it more facile and convenient for decision makers to execute decisions efficiently and quickly.

Background: Secreted frizzled-related protein 2 (sFRP2) plays an important role in metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs); However, its relevance with cardiometabolic diseases remains to be elucidated. We aimed to determine the serum levels of sFRP2 in patients at different stages of heart failure (HF) with or without type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and assess the correlation between circulating sFRP2 levels and cardiometabolic risk factors.Methods: In this study, serum samples from 277 patients visiting Zhongshan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University were collected. These patients were clinically diagnosed and categorized as five groups, including the control group, pre-clinical HF group, pre-clinical HF+T2DM group, HF group and HF+T2DM group. Serum sFRP2 levels were measured with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) tests and the clinical characteristics of each patient were recorded. Spearman rank correlation analysis and multiple stepwise linear regression analysis were conducted. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis were performed to screen risk factors for HF in patients with CVDs.Results: Serum sFRP2 levels were significantly lower in the HF+T2DM group compared with the other four groups. Spearman rank correlation analysis showed that sFRP2 was negatively correlated with parameters including patients' age, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), cardiac troponin T (cTNT), N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), left atrial dimension (LAD) and left ventricular posterior wall (LVPW), and positively correlated with hemoglobin, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), albumin, total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). However, in multiple regression analysis, significant associations with ln(sFRP2) were observed only in FPG, hs-CRP and LAD. Higher serum sFRP2 was significantly linked to lower odds of HF in patients with CVDs.Conclusion: sFRP2 progressively decreased when glucose homeostasis and cardiac function deteriorated. sFRP2 acted as a risk factor for HF in patients with CVDs, especially in those with concomitant T2DM.

Abstract Aims/Introduction Diabetes is an important risk factor for atherosclerotic disease. The initiating factor of atherosclerosis is local endothelial cell injury. The arachidonic acid metabolite, 12(S)‐hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (12[S]‐HETE), might be involved in this process. In recent years, some studies have discussed the effect of 12(S)‐HETE on vascular endothelial cell function. In the present study, we investigated the effect of 12(S)‐HETE on vascular endothelial cell function in high‐glucose conditions and the mechanisms involved. Materials and Methods Human umbilical vein endothelial cells were cultured in conventional M199 medium and high‐glucose M199 medium. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells were stimulated with 12(S)‐HETE and cinnamyl‐3,4‐dihydroxy‐α‐cyanocinnamate (a 12/15‐lipoxygenases inhibitor). A type 1 diabetes mellitus model was established in C57BL/6 or 12/15‐lipoxygenases knockout mice with streptozotocin. Aortic tissue was harvested for subsequent testing. The transmembrane transport of dextran and human acute monocytic leukaemia cell line (THP‐1) cells was measured. The adherens junction protein, IkBα, nuclear factor kappa Bp65 (P65), intercellular adhesion molecule 1 and vascular cell adhesion protein 1 expression and phosphorylation, and the binding/dissociation of endothelial cell components were observed. Video-based facial expression recognition is a long-standing problem owing to a gap between visual features and emotions, difficulties in tracking the subtle movement of muscles and limited datasets. The key to solving this problem is to exploit effective features characterizing facial expression to perform facial expression recognition. We propose an effective framework to solve these problems. In our work, both spatial information and temporal information are utilized through the aggregation layer of a framework that fuses two state-of-the-art stream networks. We investigate different strategies for pooling across spatial information and temporal information. We find that it is effective to pool jointly across spatial information and temporal information for video-based facial expression recognition. Our framework is end-to-end trainable for whole-video recognition. In addressing the problem of facial recognition, the main contribution of this project is the design of a novel, trainable deep neural network framework that fuses spatial information and temporal information of video according to CNNs and LSTMs for pattern recognition. The experimental results on two public datasets, i.e., the RML and eNTERFACE05 databases, show that our framework outperforms previous state-of-the-art frameworks.

Traditional planting and aquaculture has the problem of large consumption of water resources and land resources, and the water environmental pollution is also a difficult problem facing human beings. Population growth and food safety issues have promoted the concept of aquaponics--a recycling ecological planting and breeding mode. It combines hydroponics and recirculating aquaculture technology to realize water resources and nutrient recycling, low pollution and high productivity and efficiency. In this paper, hydroponics as the main vegetable cultivation method in aquaponics and the main equipment of water treatment in recirculating aquaculture are introduced, and the traditional equipment and its development prospects are analyzed. The greenhouse environments, water quality and nutrient circulation involved in intelligent monitoring and control of aquaponic systems are systematically analyzed and summarized. This paper summarizes the current development of technology and methods in aquaponics and provides prospects for future development trends. With the development of technology, in the future, the aquaponics system will become more intelligent, intensive, accurate and efficient.

Biochar has been widely used in the fields of environment and energy, and green preparation can make biochar-based materials more environmentally friendly. Particularly, in the low-temperature pyrolysis of biochar, labile C with low biological toxicity is the main influencing factor of bacteria in soil. Therefore, it is worth studying to develop the fabrication technology of low-temperature pyrolysis biochar with rich pore structure. The mechanical effect of ultrasonic cavitation is considered to be an effective strategy for the preparation of biochar. However, the sonochemical effects on biochar remain to be studied. In this review, ultrasonic modification and ultrasonic-chemical modification on biochar has been reviewed. Metal oxide/biochar composites can also be obtained by an ultrasonic-chemical method. It is worth mentioning that there have been some reports on the regeneration of biochar by ultrasound. In addition to ultrasonic preparation of biochar, ultrasound can also trigger the sonocatalytic performance and promote the adsorption ability of biochar for the removal of harmful substances. The catalytic mechanism of ultrasound/biochar needs to be further investigated. For application, biochar prepared by ultrasound has been used for the removal of heavy metals in water, the adsorption of carbon dioxide, and soil remediation.

As the passenger railway network is expanding and improving, the internal connections and interdependence in the network are rising. Once a sudden geological hazard occurs and damages the network structure, the train service is prone to large-scale halt or delay. A geographical railway network is modeled to analyze the spatial distribution characteristics of the railway network as well as its vulnerability under typical geological hazards, such as earthquakes, collapses, landslides and debris flows. First, this paper modeled the geographical railway network in China based on the complex network method and analyzed the spatial distribution characteristics of the railway network. Then, the data of geological hazards along the railway that occurred over the years were crawled through the Internet to construct the hazard database to analyze the time–space distribution characteristics. Finally, based on the data of geological hazards along the railway and results of the susceptibility to geological hazards, the vulnerability of the geographical railway network was evaluated. Among these geological hazards, the greatest impact on railway safety operation came from earthquakes (48%), followed by landslides (28%), debris flows (17%) and collapses (7%). About 30% of the lines of the geographical railway network were exposed in the susceptibility areas. The most vulnerable railway lines included Sichuan–Guizhou Railway, Chengdu–Kunming Railway and Chengdu–Guiyang high-speed Railway in Southwest China, Lanzhou–Urumqi Railway and Southern Xinjiang Railway in Northwest China, and Beijing–Harbin Railway and Harbin–Manzhouli Railway in Northeast China. Therefore, professional railway rescue materials should be arranged at key stations in the above sections, with a view to improving the capability to respond to sudden geological hazards.

An efficient intelligent fault diagnosis model was proposed in this paper to timely and accurately offer a dependable basis for identifying the rolling bearing condition in the actual production application. The model is mainly based on an improved butterfly optimizer algorithm- (BOA-) optimized kernel extreme learning machine (KELM) model. Firstly, the roller bearing’s vibration signals in the four states that contain normal state, outer race failure, inner race failure, and rolling ball failure are decomposed into several intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) using the complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition based on adaptive noise (CEEMDAN). Then, the amplitude energy entropies of IMFs are designated as the features of the rolling bearing. In order to eliminate redundant features, a random forest was used to receive the contributions of features to the accuracy of results, and subsets of features were set up by removing one feature in the descending order, using the classification accuracy of the SBOA-KELM model as the criterion to obtain the optimal feature subset. The salp swarm algorithm (SSA) was introduced to BOA to improve optimization ability, obtain optimal KELM parameters, and avoid the BOA deteriorating into local optimization. Finally, an optimal SBOA-KELM model was constructed for the identification of rolling bearings. In the experiment, SBOA was validated against ten other competitive optimization algorithms on 30 IEEE CEC2017 benchmark functions. The experimental results validated that the SBOA was evident over existing algorithms for most function problems. SBOA-KELM employed for diagnosing the fault diagnosis of rolling bearings obtained improved classification performance and higher stability. Therefore, the proposed SBOA-KELM model can be effectively used to diagnose faults of rolling bearings.

This study used metro smart-card data from Wuhan, China, and explored the impact of the built environment on the metro ridership and station travel distance of elderly people using geographically weighted regression (GWR). First, our results show that elderly ridership at transfer stations is significantly higher than that at non-transfer stations. The building floor area ratio and the number of commercial facilities positively impact elderly ridership, while the number of road intersections and general hospitals has the opposite impact, of which factors show significant heterogeneity. Second, our results show that the average travel distance of terminal stations is significantly higher than that of non-terminal stations, and the average travel distance of non-transfer stations is higher than that of transfer stations. The distance of stations from the subcenter and building volume ratio have a positive effect, while station opening time and betweenness centrality have a negative effect. Our findings may provide insights for the optimization of land use in the built environment of age-friendly metros, help in the formulation of relevant policies to enhance elderly mobility, and provide a reference for other similar cities.

Since the first reports that the novel coronavirus was showing human-to-human transmission characteristics and asymptomatic cases, the number of patients with associated pneumonia has continued to rise and the epidemic has grown. It now threatens the health and lives of people across the world. The governments of many countries have attached great importance to the prevention of SARS-CoV-2, via research into the etiology and epidemiology of this newly emerged disease. Clinical signs, treatment, and prevention characteristics of the novel coronavirus pneumonia have been receiving attention worldwide, especially from medical personnel. However, owing to the different experimental methods, sample sizes, sample sources, and research perspectives of various studies, results have been inconsistent, or relate to an isolated aspect of the virus or the disease it causes. Currently, systematic summary data on the novel coronavirus are limited. This review combines experimental and clinical evidence into a systematic analysis and summary of the current progress of research into SARS-CoV-2, from multiple perspectives, with the aim of gaining a better overall understanding of the disease. Our report provides important information for current clinicians, for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 pneumonia.

We assessed the effect of information sources on Ebola-specific knowledge and behavior during the 2014–2015 Ebola virus disease outbreak in Sierra Leone. We pooled data from 4 population-based knowledge, attitude, and practice surveys (August, October, and December 2014 and July 2015), with a total of 10,604 respondents. We created composite variables for exposures (information sources: electronic, print, new media, government, community) and outcomes (knowledge and misconceptions, protective and risk behavior) and tested associations by using logistic regression within multilevel modeling. Exposure to information sources was associated with higher knowledge and protective behaviors. However, apart from print media, exposure to information sources was also linked to misconceptions and risk behavior, but with weaker associations observed. Knowledge and protective behavior were associated with the outbreak level, most strongly after the peak, whereas risk behavior was seen at all levels of the outbreak. In future outbreaks, close attention should be paid to dissemination of information.

MicroRNAs regulate a wide range of biological processes and being able to inhibit their function could allow the development of therapeutic options. Here the authors describe a ‘small RNA zipper’ that sequesters miRNAs by forming a chain of DNA:RNA duplexes.

The bus stop layout and route deployment may influence the efficiency of bus services. Evaluating the supply of bus service requires the consideration of demand from various urban activities, such as residential and job-related activities. Although various evaluation methods have been explored from different perspectives, it remains a challenging issue. This study proposes a spatial statistical approach by comparing the density of the potential demand and supply of bus services at bus stops. The potential demand takes jobs-housing locations into account, and the supply of bus services considers bus stops and their associated total number of daily bus arrivals. The kernel density estimation (KDE) and spatial autocorrelation analyses are employed to investigate the coupling relationship between the demand and supply densities at global and local scales. A coupling degree index (CDI) is constructed to standardize the measurement of demand-supply balance. A case study in Wuhan, China demonstrated that: (1) the spatial distribution of bus stops is reasonable at global level, (2) Seriously unbalanced locations for bus services have been detected at several stops. Related adjustments that can improve these defects are highly recommended.

The Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA), a partnership of nations, international organizations, and civil society, was launched in 2014 with a mission to build countries’ capacities to respond to infectious disease threats and to foster global compliance with the International Health Regulations (IHR 2005). The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) assists partner nations to improve IHR 2005 capacities and achieve GHSA targets. To assess progress through these CDC-supported efforts, we analyzed country activity reports dating from April 2015 through March 2017. Our analysis shows that CDC helped 17 Phase I countries achieve 675 major GHSA accomplishments, particularly in the cross-cutting areas of public health surveillance, laboratory systems, workforce development, and emergency response management. CDC’s engagement has been critical to these accomplishments, but sustained support is needed until countries attain IHR 2005 capacities, thereby fostering national and regional health protection and ensuring a world safer and more secure from global health threats.

Lysozyme-like proteins (LYZLs) belong to the c-type lysozyme/α-lactalbumin family and are selectively expressed in the mammalian male reproductive tract. Two members, human sperm lysozyme-like protein (SLLP) -1 and mouse LYZL4, have been reported to contribute to fertilization but show no bacteriolytic activity. Here, we focused on the possible contribution of LYZL6 to immunity and fertilization. In humans, LYZL6 was selectively expressed by the testis and epididymis and became concentrated on spermatozoa. Native LYZL6 isolated from sperm extracts exhibited bacteriolytic activity against Micrococcus lysodeikticus. Recombinant LYZL6 (rLYZL6) reached its peak activity at pH 5.6 and 15 mM of Na+, and could inhibit the growth of Gram-positive, but not Gram-negative bacteria. Nevertheless, the bacteriolytic activity of rLYZL6 proved to be much lower than that of human lysozyme under physiological conditions. Immunodetection with a specific antiserum localized the LYZL6 protein on the postacrosomal membrane of mature spermatozoa. Immunoneutralization of LYZL6 significantly decreased the numbers of human spermatozoa fused with zona-free hamster eggs in a dose-dependent manner in vitro. Thus, we report here for the first time that LYZL6, an acidic, bacteriolytic and human sperm-related protein, is likely important for fertilization but not for the innate immunity of the male reproductive tract.

Dissolved oxygen is an important index to evaluate water quality, and its concentration is of great significance in industrial production, environmental monitoring, aquaculture, food production, and other fields. As its change is a continuous dynamic process, the dissolved oxygen concentration needs to be accurately measured in real time. In this paper, the principles, main applications, advantages, and disadvantages of iodometric titration, electrochemical detection, and optical detection, which are commonly used dissolved oxygen detection methods, are systematically analyzed and summarized. The detection mechanisms and materials of electrochemical and optical detection methods are examined and reviewed. Because external environmental factors readily cause interferences in dissolved oxygen detection, the traditional detection methods cannot adequately meet the accuracy, real-time, stability, and other measurement requirements; thus, it is urgent to use intelligent methods to make up for these deficiencies. This paper studies the application of intelligent technology in intelligent signal transfer processing, digital signal processing, and the real-time dynamic adaptive compensation and correction of dissolved oxygen sensors. The combined application of optical detection technology, new fluorescence-sensitive materials, and intelligent technology is the focus of future research on dissolved oxygen sensors.

The proposed method has 30 streams, i.e., 15 spatial streams and 15 temporal streams. Each spatial stream corresponds to each temporal stream. Therefore, this work correlates with the symmetry concept. It is a difficult task to classify video-based facial expression owing to the gap between the visual descriptors and the emotions. In order to bridge the gap, a new video descriptor for facial expression recognition is presented to aggregate spatial and temporal convolutional features across the entire extent of a video. The designed framework integrates a state-of-the-art 30 stream and has a trainable spatial–temporal feature aggregation layer. This framework is end-to-end trainable for video-based facial expression recognition. Thus, this framework can effectively avoid overfitting to the limited emotional video datasets, and the trainable strategy can learn to better represent an entire video. The different schemas for pooling spatial–temporal features are investigated, and the spatial and temporal streams are best aggregated by utilizing the proposed method. The extensive experiments on two public databases, BAUM-1s and eNTERFACE05, show that this framework has promising performance and outperforms the state-of-the-art strategies.

Non-alcoholic steatoheaptitis (NASH), the critical stage of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is of chronic progression and can develop cirrhosis even hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, non-invasive biomarkers for NASH diagnosis remain poorly applied in clinical practice. Our study aims at testing the accuracy of the combination of cytokeratin-18 M30 fragment (CK-18-M30), fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF-21), interleukin 1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra), pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) and osteoprotegerin (OPG) in diagnosing NAFLD and NASH.179 patients with biopsy-proven NAFLD were enrolled as training group, 91 age- and gender-matched healthy subjects were recruited at the same time as controls. 63 other NAFLD patients were separately collected as validation group. 45 alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD) patients, 50 hepatitis B virus (HBV) patients, 52 hepatitis C virus (HCV) patients were also included. Serum biomarker levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.Serum levels of CK-18-M30, FGF-21, IL-1Ra and PEDF increased, while OPG decreased in a stepwise fashion in controls, non-NASH NAFLD patients and NASH patients (P < 0.01). The area under receiver-operating characteristics curve to diagnose NASH was 0.86 for CK-18-M30, 0.89 for FGF-21, 0.89 for IL-1Ra, 0.89 for PEDF and 0.89 for OPG. CK-18-M30 had 70% negative predictive value (NPV) and 79% positive predictive value (PPV) to diagnose NASH. A 5-step approach measuring CK-18-M30 followed by FGF21, IL-1Ra, PEDF and OPG gradually improved the NPV to 76% and PPV to 85%, which reached 80% and 76% respectively in the validation cohort.Compared to single biomarker, stepwise combination of CK-18-M30, FGF-21, IL-1Ra, PEDF and OPG can further improve the accuracy in diagnosing NASH.
