Flavobacterium davisii is one of the causative agents of columnaris disease, significantly impacting Nile tilapia aquaculture. This study examines the invasion and immune evasion mechanisms of a highly virulent F. davisii strain through transcriptomic profiling of tilapia gills following acute immersion. We identified 8192 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) at 2 h, 6 h, and 12 h post-infection. They are enriched in pathways related to oxidative stress, immune suppression, tissue necrosis, and bacterial infection. Notably, early overexpression of rhamnose-binding lectin and mucin genes facilitated bacterial adhesion. Key immune genes, including those encoding major histocompatibility complex (MHC), immunoglobulins (Ig), Toll-like receptors (TLRs), and chemokines, were downregulated, indicating immune suppression. Conversely, immune evasion genes such as Fc receptor-like (FcRL) and programmed death-ligand 1 (PDL1) were upregulated, along with genes associated with reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, leading to increased tissue damage. Additionally, the upregulation of fibroblast growth factor and collagen genes suggested active tissue repair. In conclusion, F. davisii rapidly invades its host by enhancing adhesion to gill tissues, suppressing immune function, and inducing tissue damage. These findings enhance our understanding of F. davisii infection mechanisms and support the future breeding of disease-resistant tilapia and the development of sustainable control strategies.

Canine distemper virus (CDV) is a highly contagious and potentially lethal virus that affects dogs and other members of the Canidae family, including wolves, foxes, and coyotes. Here, we present a fluorescent lateral flow immunoassay (FLFA) platform for the detection of CDV, which utilizes fluorescent microspheres - fusion protein monoclonal antibody (mAb)-labeled monoclonal antibody. The assay detected CDV within 5 min, with a detection limit threshold of 3 × 102 TCID50/mL. Notably, the assay demonstrated no cross-reactivity with canine parvovirus, canine coronavirus, canine adenovirus, feline calicivirus, feline herpesvirus, or feline parvovirus. Field and clinical applicability of the assay was evaluated using 63 field samples, including 30 canine fecal samples, 18 swab samples, and 15 blood samples. The coincidence rate between the detection results of clinical samples obtained through FLFA and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was 96.83%. Thus, this assay offers a significant advancement for the rapid diagnosis of CDV at the point of care.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant global health threat as the silent pandemic. Because of the use of antimicrobials in aquaculture systems, fish farms may be potential reservoirs for the dissemination of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs). Treatments with disinfectants have been promoted to reduce the use of antibiotics; however, the effect of these types of treatments on AMR or ARGs is not well known. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of low dose ozone treatments (0.15 mg/L) on ARG dynamics in pond water using metagenomic shotgun sequencing analysis. The results suggested that ozone disinfection can increase the relative abundance of acquired ARGs and intrinsic efflux mediated ARGs found in the resistance nodulation cell division (RND) family. Notably, a co-occurrence of efflux and non-efflux ARGs within the same bacterial genera was also observed, with most of these genera dominating the bacterial population following ozone treatments. These findings suggest that ozone treatments may selectively favor the survival of bacterial genera harboring efflux ARGs, which may also have non-efflux ARGs. This study underscores the importance of considering the potential impacts of disinfection practices on AMR gene dissemination particularly in aquaculture settings where disinfectants are frequently used at low levels. Future endeavors should prioritize the evaluation of these strategies, as they may be associated with an increased risk of AMR in aquatic environments.

Many automatic classification methods published can identify the main hidden distress types of highways, but they cannot meet the precise needs of operation and maintenance. The classification of interlayer distresses based on ground penetrating radar (GPR) images is very important to improve maintenance efficiency and reduce cost. However, among models of different complexities, which models are suitable for the interlayer distress data needs further verification. Firstly, to cover enough of the variable range of distress samples, the interlayer distress dataset collected containing 32,038 samples was subcategorized into three types: interlayer debonding, interlayer water seepage, and interlayer loosening. Secondly, residual networks (ResNets) that render easier to build shallower or deeper networks (ResNet-4, ResNet-6, ResNet-8, ResNet-10, ResNet-14, ResNet-18, ResNet-34, and ResNet-50) and five classical network models (DenseNet-121, EfficientNet B0, SqueezeNet1_0, MobileNet V2, and VGG-19) were evaluated by training and validation loss, test accuracy, and model complexity. The experimental results show that all models have high test accuracy with little difference, but ResNet-4, ResNet-6, SqueezeNet1_0, and ResNet-8 exhibit no overfitting which means they have good generalization performance.

Objectives To evaluate the diagnostic performance of urine HIV antibody rapid test kits in screening diverse populations and to analyse subjects’ willingness regarding reagent types, purchase channels, acceptable prices, and self-testing.Designs Diagnostic accuracy studiesParticipants A total of 2606 valid and eligible samples were collected in the study, including 202 samples from female sex workers (FSWs), 304 persons with injection drug use (IDU), 1000 pregnant women (PW), 100 subjects undergoing voluntary HIV counselling and testing (VCT) and 1000 students in higher education schools or colleges (STUs). Despite the considerable advancements in automated identification methods of highway hidden distress with ground-penetrating radar (GPR) images, there still exist challenges in realizing automated identification of highway hidden distress owing to the quantity, variability, and reliability of the distress samples and diversity of classification models. Firstly, the dataset collected contains 31,640 samples categorized into four categories: interlayer debonding, interlayer loosening, interlayer water seepage, and structural loosening from 1500 km highway, for obtaining larger enough samples and covering the variable range of distress samples. Secondly, the distresses were labeled by experienced experts, and the labels were verified with drilled cores to ensure their reliability. Lastly, 18 exemplary convolutional neural network (CNN) models from 8 different architectures were evaluated using evaluation metrics such as precision, recall, and f1-score. Further, confusion matrix and Grad-CAM techniques were utilized to analyze these models. The experimental results show that VGG13 performed most prominently and stably, while the lightweight network SqueezeNet1_1 performed particularly well with a batch size of 64. Furthermore, this study indicates that models with fewer layers can achieve comparable or better performance than deeper models.

Nitrogen from ammonia is one of the most common pollutants toxics to aquatic species in aquatic environment. The intestinal mucosa is one of the key mucosal defenses of aquatic species, and the accumulation of ammonia nitrogen in water environment will cause irreversible damage to intestinal function. In this study, histology, immunohistochemistry, ultrastructural pathology, enzyme activity analysis and qRT-PCR were performed to reveal the toxic effect of ammonia nitrogen stress on the intestine of Pelteobagrus fulvidraco. According to histological findings, ammonia nitrogen stress caused structural damage to the intestine and reduced the number of mucous cells. Enzyme activity analysis revealed that the activity of bactericidal substances (Lysozyme, alkaline phosphatase, and ACP) had decreased. The ultrastructure revealed sparse and shortened microvilli as well as badly degraded tight junctions. Immunohistochemistry for ZO-1 demonstrated an impaired intestinal mucosal barrier. Furthermore, qRT-PCR revealed that tight junction related genes (ZO-1, Occludin, Claudin-1) were downregulated, while the pore-forming protein Claudin-2 was upregulated. Furthermore, as ammonia nitrogen concentration grew, so did the positive signal of Zap-70 (T/NK cell) and the expression of inflammation-related genes (TNF, IL-1β, IL-8, IL-10). In light of the above findings, we conclude that ammonia nitrogen stress damages intestinal mucosal barrier of Pelteobagrus fulvidraco and induces intestinal inflammation.

Over the past few decades, the diversified development of antiferromagnetic spintronics has made antiferromagnets (AFMs) interesting and very useful. After tough challenges, the applications of AFMs in electronic devices have transitioned from focusing on the interface coupling features to achieving the manipulation and detection of AFMs. As AFMs are internally magnetic, taking full use of AFMs for information storage has been the main target of research. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive description of AFM spintronics applications from the interface coupling, read-out operations, and writing manipulations perspective. We examine the early use of AFMs in magnetic recordings and conventional magnetoresistive random-access memory (MRAM), and review the latest mechanisms of the manipulation and detection of AFMs. Finally, based on exchange bias (EB) manipulation, a high-performance EB-MRAM is introduced as the next generation of AFM-based memories, which provides an effective method for read-out and writing of AFMs and opens a new era for AFM spintronics.

Abstract The viability of lithium‐sulfur (Li–S) batteries toward real implementation directly correlates with unlocking lithium polysulfide (LiPS) evolution reactions. Along this line, designing promotors with the function of synchronously relieving LiPS shuttle and promoting sulfur conversion is critical. Herein, the nitrogen evolution on hierarchical and atomistic Ni–N–C electrocatalyst, mainly pertaining to the essential subtraction, reservation and coordination of nitrogen atoms, is manipulated to attain favorable Li–S pouch cell performances. Such rational evolution behavior realizes the “nitrogen balance” in simultaneously regulating the Ni–N coordination environment, Ni single atom loading, abundant vacancy defects, active nitrogen and electron conductivity, and maximizing the electrocatalytic activity elevation of Ni–N–C system. With such merit, the cathode harvests favorable performances in a soft‐packaged pouch cell prototype even under high sulfur mass loading and lean electrolyte usage. A specific energy density up to 405.1 Wh kg−1 is harvested by the 0.5‐Ah‐level pouch cell.

Different from conventional reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), simultaneous transmitting and reflecting RIS (STAR-RIS) can reflect and transmit signals to the receiver. In this paper, to serve more ground users and increase deployment flexibility, we investigate an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with STAR-RIS (STAR-RIS-UAV)-aided wireless communications for multi-user networks. Energy splitting (ES) and mode switching (MS) protocols are considered to control the reflection and transmission coefficients of STAR-RIS elements. To maximize the sum rate of the STAR-RIS-UAV-aided coordinated multipoint (CoMP) cellular system for multi-user networks, the corresponding beamforming vectors as well as transmitted and reflected coefficient matrices are optimized. Specifically, instead of adopting the alternating optimization, we design an iteration method to optimize all variables for both the ES and MS protocols at the same time. Simulation results reveal that the STAR-RIS-UAV-aided CoMP system has a much higher sum rate than systems with conventional RIS or without RIS. Furthermore, the proposed structure is more flexible than fixed STAR-RIS and could greatly promote the sum rate.

To provide rapid direction finding (DF) for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) emitters in future wireless networks, a low-complexity direction of arrival (DOA) estimation architecture for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) receiver arrays is constructed. In this paper, we propose two strategies to address the extremely high complexity caused by eigenvalue decomposition of the received signal covariance matrix. Firstly, a rapid power iterative rotational invariance (RPI-RI) method is proposed, which adopts the signal subspace generated by power iteration to obtain the final direction estimation through rotational invariance between subarrays. RPI-RI causes a significant complexity reduction at the cost of a substantial performance loss. In order to further reduce the complexity and provide good directional measurement results, the rapid power iterative polynomial rooting (RPI-PR) method is proposed, which utilizes the noise subspace combined with the polynomial solution method to obtain the optimal direction estimation. In addition, the influence of initial vector selection on convergence in the power iteration is analyzed, especially when the initial vector is orthogonal to the incident wave. Simulation results show that the two proposed methods outperform the conventional DOA estimation methods in terms of computational complexity. In particular, the RPI-PR method achieves more than two orders of magnitude lower complexity than conventional methods and achieves performance close to the Cramér–Rao Lower Bound (CRLB). Moreover, it is verified that the initial vector and the relative error have a significant impact on the performance with respect to the computational complexity.

Abstract The lithium polysulfides (LiPS) dissolution into electrolyte as well as consequent shuttle behavior seriously exacerbate the electrochemical performance of lithium–sulfur batteries. Herein, the intrinsic defect of graphene has been tailored by using plasma irradiation. The topological defective carbon structure is demystified into monovacancy and divacancy which effectively promote Li–S redox kinetics by selectively decelerating the generation of soluble high‐order LiPSs and passingly promoting the conversion to final solid products. Theoretical prediction uncovers the selective manipulation of Li–S redox kinetics by defective graphene, facilitating the reduced overpotential effect and uniform deposition of Li2S. Moreover, the divacancy presents a higher activity for Li–S chemistry in contrast with monovacancy. Therefore, the battery achieves superior cyclability with a capacity retention of 88.6% at 1.0 C over 300 cycles. Furthermore, it yields an areal capacity up to 8.5 mAh cm−2 with a sulfur loading of 13.3 mg cm−2.

Robot swarms, which constitute typical multi-user systems, have played more and more important roles in many areas. In this paper, a directional modulation (DM) scheme for frequency diverse array (FDA) based on the leakage power minimization criterion is proposed, which can be used in a robot swarm system as well as other multi-user scenarios. Based on this scheme, location-dependent secure transmission can be obtained in the multi-user downlink channels under certain circumstances, where independent data streams can be sent to different legitimate users safely. Meanwhile, the difficulty for perfect eavesdropping is significantly increased compared with phased-array-based DM. We also use the block successive upper-bound minimization algorithm to optimize the frequency offsets of the array, and the algorithm can be effectively performed. This scheme utilizes the baseband model of the FDA, which is another contribution of this paper. It solves the problems brought by the time-varying nature of the FDA and reveals the distance-angle correlation of the FDA more fundamentally. Based on that, besides the proposed FDA-DM scheme, a novel multiple access technique, named as link division multiple access, is also preliminarily proposed. It allows the transmitter to distinguish multiple users in the same or proximal locations without the help of time division, frequency division, or code division. At last, numerical results are presented to verify the superiorities of LDMA and the proposed FDA-DM scheme.

Sea lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) are ectoparasitic copepods that cause significant economic loss in marine salmoniculture. In commercial salmon farms, infestation with sea lice can enhance susceptibility to other significant pathogens, such as the highly contagious infectious salmon anemia virus (ISAv). In this study, transcriptomic analysis was used to evaluate the impact of four experimental functional feeds (i.e. 0.3% EPA/DHA+high-ω6, 0.3% EPA/DHA+high-ω6+immunostimulant (IS), 1% EPA/DHA+high-ω6, and 1% EPA/DHA+high-ω3) on Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) during a single infection with sea lice (L. salmonis) and a co-infection with sea lice and ISAv. The overall objectives were to compare the transcriptomic profiles of skin between lice infection alone with co-infection groups and assess differences in gene expression response among animals with different experimental diets. Atlantic salmon smolts were challenged with L. salmonis following a 28-day feeding trial. Fish were then challenged with ISAv at 18 days post-sea lice infection (dpi), and maintained on individual diets, to establish a co-infection model. Skin tissues sampled at 33 dpi were subjected to RNA-seq analysis. The co-infection’s overall survival rates were between 37%-50%, while no mortality was observed in the single infection with lice. With regard to the infection status, 756 and 1303 consensus differentially expressed genes (DEGs) among the four diets were identified in “lice infection vs. pre-infection” and “co-infection vs. pre-infection” groups, respectively, that were shared between the four experimental diets. The co-infection groups (co-infection vs. pre-infection) included up-regulated genes associated with glycolysis, the interferon pathway, complement cascade activity, and heat shock protein family, while the down-regulated genes were related to antigen presentation and processing, T-cell activation, collagen formation, and extracellular matrix. Pathway enrichment analysis conducted between infected groups (lice infection vs. co-infection) resulted in several immune-related significant GO terms and pathways unique to this group, such as “autophagosome”, “cytosolic DNA-sensing pathway” and “response to type I interferons”. Understanding how experimental functional feeds can impact the host response and the trajectory of co-infections will be an essential step in identifying efficacious intervention strategies that account for the complexities of disease in open cage culture.

Artificial intelligence has become indispensable in modern life, but its energy consumption has become a significant concern due to its huge storage and computational demands. Artificial intelligence algorithms are mainly based on deep learning algorithms, relying on the backpropagation of convolutional neural networks or binary neural networks. While these algorithms aim to simulate the learning process of the human brain, their low bio-fidelity and the separation of storage and computing units lead to significant energy consumption. The human brain is a remarkable computing machine with extraordinary capabilities for recognizing and processing complex information while consuming very low power. Tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR)-based devices, namely magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs), have great advantages in simulating the behavior of biological synapses and neurons. This is not only because MTJs can simulate biological behavior such as spike-timing dependence plasticity and leaky integrate-fire, but also because MTJs have intrinsic stochastic and oscillatory properties. These characteristics improve MTJs’ bio-fidelity and reduce their power consumption. MTJs also possess advantages such as ultrafast dynamics and non-volatile properties, making them widely utilized in the field of neuromorphic computing in recent years. We conducted a comprehensive review of the development history and underlying principles of TMR, including a detailed introduction to the material and magnetic properties of MTJs and their temperature dependence. We also explored various writing methods of MTJs and their potential applications. Furthermore, we provided a thorough analysis of the characteristics and potential applications of different types of MTJs for neuromorphic computing. TMR-based devices have demonstrated promising potential for broad application in neuromorphic computing, particularly in the development of spiking neural networks. Their ability to perform on-chip learning with ultra-low power consumption makes them an exciting prospect for future advances in the era of the internet of things.

Abstract Background Flavobacterium columnare is the causative agent of columnaris disease that affects cultured freshwater fishes worldwide. F. columnare easily colonizes surfaces by forming biofilm, which helps the pathogen resist antibiotic and disinfectant treatments. Previously, we had shown that increasing concentrations of calcium (Ca2+) promoted biofilm formation by F. columnare. The objective of this study was to further characterize the role of Ca2+ on biofilm formation and to compare the transcriptome profiles of planktonic and biofilm cells. Results RNA-Seq analysis was conducted to identify genes that were differentially expressed between the following states: i) planktonic cells in control medium (P), ii) planktonic cells in calcium-enriched medium (P/Ca), and iii) biofilm cells in calcium-enriched medium (B/Ca). Overall, we identified 441 significant (FDR-adjusted p 2) differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between P and B/Ca samples; 112 significant DEGs between P/Ca and B/Ca samples, and 175 significant DEGs between P/Ca and P samples, corresponding to 15.87, 4.03 and 6.30% of the total protein-coding sequences, respectively. The significant DEGs fell into different functional categories including iron acquisition, oxidative stress response, extracellular protein secretion, and respiratory metabolism. Conclusions Our results posit Ca2+ as a critical signal in regulating bacterial surface adhesion and biofilm formation in F. columnare. Living in biofilm elicited a shift in several metabolic pathways that allowed the cells to cope with oxidative stress and nutrient starvation. In addition, Ca2+ supplementation induced the expression of putative virulence factors in F. columnare, such as extracellular protein secretion and iron acquisition.

Abstract The impact of cortisol on Flavobacterium columnare biofilm formation was explored. Firstly, the dynamics of biofilm formation by one highly (HV) and one low virulent (LV) F. columnare isolate with and without the stress hormone cortisol under microfluidic flow conditions was characterized. This to confirm that F. columnare cells could form biofilm under cortisol supplementation, and to compare the temporal and structural differences between different treatment groups. One trial revealed that in both isolates cell aggregates resembling biofilms occurred within 7-h post-inoculation. Consequently, cell clusters were sloughed away, followed by a rebuilding of bacterial cell aggregates, suggestive for a high spreading capacity. While the HV isolate revealed cell aggregates formed upstream at all time-points, for the LV isolate this was only seen upon cortisol supplementation. Secondly, the transcriptional effect of genes (gldK, gldL, gldM, gldN, sprA, sprE, sprT, and porV) belonging to the Type IX secretion system involved in gliding motility was investigated in planktonic and biofilm cells of a HV and LV isolate to which no, a low (LD) or high (HD) dose of cortisol was added. Significantly lower expression of gliding genes gldK, gldL, gldM and gldN, and of protein secretion regulator porV was seen in the LV isolate planktonic cells supplemented with a HD-cortisol. The LV isolate biofilm cells treated with the HD-cortisol showed a significant upregulation of sprT, encoding mobile surface adhesion important in bacterial colonization. This is the first evidence for the co-regulatory effect of cortisol on biofilm formation and F. columnare gliding gene expression.

Largemouth bass is an important commercially farmed fish in China, but the rapid expansion of its breeding has resulted in increased incidence of diseases caused by bacteria, viruses and parasites. In this study, moribund largemouth bass containing ulcer foci on body surfaces indicated the most likely pathogens were iridovirus and rhabdovirus members and this was confirmed using a combination of immunohistochemistry, cell culture, electron microscopy and conserved gene sequence analysis. We identified that these fish had been co-infected with these viruses. We observed bullet-shaped virions (100–140 nm long and 50–100 nm in diameter) along with hexagonal virions with 140 nm diameters in cell culture inoculated with tissue homogenates. The viruses were plaque purified and a comparison of the highly conserved regions of the genome of these viruses indicated that they are most similar to largemouth bass virus (LMBV) and hybrid snakehead rhabdovirus (HSHRV), respectively. Regression infection experiments indicated fish mortalities for LMBV-FS2021 and HSHRV-MS2021 were 86.7 and 11.1%, respectively. While co-infection resulted in 93.3% mortality that was significantly (p < 0.05) higher than the single infections even though the viral loads differed by >100-fold. Overall, we simultaneously isolated and identified LMBV and a HSHRV-like virus from diseased largemouth bass, and our results can provide novel ideas for the prevention and treatment of combined virus infection especially in largemouth bass.

Abstract Spin‐torque memristors are proposed in 2009, and can provide fast, low‐power, and infinite memristive behavior for neuromorphic computing and large‐density non‐volatile memory. However, the strict requirements of combining high magnetoresistance, stable domain wall pinning and current‐induced switching in a single device pose difficulties in physical implementation. Here, a nanoscale spin‐torque memristor based on a perpendicular‐anisotropy magnetic tunnel junction with a CoFeB/W/CoFeB composite free layer structure is experimentally demonstrated. Its tunneling magnetoresistance is higher than 200%, and memristive behavior can be realized by spin‐transfer torque switching. Memristive states are retained by strong domain wall pinning effects in the free layer. Experiments and simulations suggest that nanoscale vertical chiral spin textures can form around clusters of W atoms under the combined effect of opposite Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interactions and the Ruderman–Kittel–Kasuya–Yosida interaction between the two CoFeB free layers. Energy fluctuation caused by these textures may be the main reason for the strong pinning effect. With the experimentally demonstrated memristive behavior and spike‐timing‐dependent plasticity, a spiking neural network to perform handwritten pattern recognition in an unsupervised manner is simulated. Due to advantages such as long endurance and high speed, the spin‐torque memristors are competitive in the future applications for neuromorphic computing.

Perpendicular magnetic tunnel junctions with large tunnel magnetoresistance and low junction resistance are promising for the magnetic random access memories. Here the authors achieve the spin-transfer-torque switching in perpendicular magnetic tunnel junctions with 249% tunnel magnetoresistance and low resistance-area product.

In a directional modulation network, a general power iterative (GPI) based beamforming scheme is proposed to maximize the secrecy rate (SR), where there are two optimization variables required to be optimized. The first one is the useful precoding vector of transmitting confidential messages to the desired user while the second one is the artificial noise (AN) projection matrix of forcing more AN to eavesdroppers. In such a secure network, the paramount problem is how to design or optimize the two optimization variables by different criteria. To maximize the SR (Max-SR), an alternatively iterative structure (AIS) is established between the AN projection matrix and the precoding vector for confidential messages. To choose a good initial value of iteration process of GPI, the proposed Max-SR method can readily double its convergence speed compared to the random choice of initial value. With only four iterations, it may rapidly converge to its rate ceil. From simulation results, it follows that the SR performance of the proposed AIS of GPI-based Max-SR is much better than those of conventional leakage-based and null-space projection methods in the medium and large signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regions, and its achievable SR performance gain gradually increases as SNR increases.

Vaccines are widely employed in aquaculture to prevent bacterial infections, but their use by the U.S. catfish industry is very limited. One of the main diseases affecting catfish aquaculture is columnaris disease, caused by the bacterial pathogen Flavobacterium columnare. In 2011, a modified-live vaccine against columnaris disease was developed by selecting mutants that were resistant to rifampin. The previous study has suggested that this vaccine is stable, safe, and effective, but the mechanisms that resulted in attenuation remained uncharacterized. To understand the molecular basis for attenuation, a comparative genomic analysis was conducted to identify specific point mutations. The PacBio RS long-read sequencing platform was used to obtain draft genomes of the mutant attenuated strain (Fc1723) and the parent virulent strain (FcB27). Sequence-based genome comparison identified 16 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) unique to the mutant. Genes that contained mutations were involved in rifampin resistance, gliding motility, DNA transcription, toxin secretion, and extracellular protease synthesis. The results also found that the vaccine strain formed biofilm at a significantly lower rate than the parent strain. These observations suggested that the rifampin-resistant phenotype and the associated attenuation of the vaccine strain result from the altered activity of RNA polymerase (RpoB) and possible disrupted protein secretion systems.

Polysaccharides are ubiquitous biomolecules found in nature that contain various biological and pharmacological activities that are employed in functional foods and therapeutic agents. Natural polysaccharides are obtained mainly by extraction and purification, which may serve as reliable procedures to enhance the quality and the yield of polysaccharide products. Moreover, structural analysis of polysaccharides proves to be promising and crucial for elucidating structure−activity relationships. Therefore, this report summarizes the recent developments and applications in extraction, separation, purification, and structural analysis of polysaccharides of plants and fungi.
