Abstract Background High-frequency ventilation (HFV) is commonly used in neonatal intensive care units to provide respiratory support for critically ill neonates. Currently, there is no standardized procedure for weaning from HFV. Two commonly used strategies are transitioning from HFV to conventional mechanical ventilation (CMV) before extubation (HFV-CMV) and extubation after decreasing mean airway pressure during HFV (HFV-HFV). The impact of these strategies on neonatal cerebral oxygenation and hemodynamics remains incompletely understood. Methods We will conduct a prospective, single-center, randomized controlled trial to investigate the effects of two different HFV weaning strategies (HFV-CMV, HFV-HFV) on neonatal cerebral oxygenation and hemodynamics. The patients enrolled in the trial will be randomly allocated to either the HFV-CMV group or the HFV-HFV group in a 1:1 ratio. The primary outcome will be cerebral oxygen saturation (ScO2) before and after the intervention. Second outcomes are cerebral fractional tissue oxygen extraction, heart rate, blood pressure, and the incidence and severity of intraventricular hemorrhage and periventricular leukomalacia. We hypothesize that HFV-CMV results in positive impact on neonatal cerebral oxygenation compared to HFV-HFV. This study aims to identify a better weaning strategy for HFV and contribute evidence-based data to enhance its clinical application in newborns, potentially improving the care and outcomes for neonates receiving HFV. Discussion This study aims to assessing the impact of different HFV weaning strategies on neonatal cerebral oxygenation and hemodynamics, as well as the relationship between the duration of HFV under different strategies and neurological complications, to identify better weaning methods for HFV. We hope to contribute evidence-based data to enhance clinical application of HFV in newborns, potentially improving the care and outcomes for neonates receiving HFV. Abstract School bullying significantly impacts adolescent physical and mental development. The current study aimed to explore the effect of campus exclusion on school bullying behavior among junior high school students and the role of callous-unemotional traits and family caring. The Campus Exclusion Questionnaire, Olweus Child Bullying Questionnaire, Callous-Unemotional Trait Scale, and Family Caring Scale were completed by 705 students. A moderated mediation model was analyzed using SPSS 24.0. Results indicated that both campus exclusion and callous-unemotional traits positively predicted bullying behavior. Callous-unemotional traits partially mediated the relationship between campus exclusion and bullying behavior. Additionally, family caring moderated the link between callous-unemotional traits and bullying behavior, mitigating adverse effects. The study highlighted family caring’s protective role against bullying linked to adverse school experiences. Therefore, collaboration between schools and families is crucial to reduce bullying.

The aim of this study was to research the effect of different preservatives on quality and shelf life of fresh chilled meat stored at 4 °C for 12 days. This study used tea polyphenols (0.2%) and hydrogen peroxide (1.27 g/L) to treat chilled pork and measured its pH, TVB-N, TBARS, the total viable bacteria count (TVC) and sensory score. The results showed that the treatments with tea polyphenols and hydrogen peroxide significantly (p < 0.05) inhibited the growth of TVC on fresh chilled pork. The TVC of sample treated with tea polyphenols and hydrogen peroxide increased from initial value 3.2 to 6.0 log CFU/g after 10 and 12 days, respectively. It was also found in pH, TVB-N, TBARS and sensory measurement that the tea polyphenols and hydrogen peroxide treatment could extend the storage period of chilled meat as well as hydrogen peroxide was slightly better than tea polyphenols. It could be suggested that both tea polyphenols and hydrogen peroxide treatment has great potential to extend the shelf life of fresh chilled pork.

Introduction: Inflammation is associated with tumor initiation, and existing tumors are associated with immune suppression locally and systemically. Cancer treatment is also associated with immune suppression. This review evaluates evidence related to the use of acupuncture for modulation of inflammation and the immune system in cancer patients. Methods: Nine databases were searched for prospective, randomized, controlled trials evaluating the use of acupuncture for modulation of the immune system in cancer patients through March 2024. Only studies involving needle insertion into acupuncture points were included. No language limitations were applied. Studies were assessed for risk of bias (ROB) according to Cochrane criteria. The primary outcomes were levels of immune and inflammatory markers. Results: Of 3607 articles identified, 1526 duplicates were omitted, and 2261 articles were screened. Sixty-four (58 Chinese, 6 English) publications met all inclusion criteria and were evaluated for ROB. Forty-seven studies were rated as unclear ROB, and nine studies were rated as high ROB. However, when the blinding and allocation concealment criteria were removed, 12 studies had low ROB. The purpose of this research was to assess the impact of 5 lactic acid bacteria (LAB), Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, Lacticaseibacillus casei, Streptococcus thermophilus, Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus on the characteristic flavor of the fermented sweet potato juice. Following the fermentation process, significant variations were observed in the concentrations of sugars, organic acids, as well as the overall volatile aroma compounds. LAB can effectively facilitate the production of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including acids and ketones, thereby enhancing the aroma quality. Inoculation fermentation by LAB decreased the sweet and nutty odor, and increased fresh, floral, and citrus aroma of the sweet potato juice. The sweet potato juice fermented by 5 lactic acid bacteria strains had different flavor features, while the sample of Lp10 showed the highest overall acceptability. Compared to other strains, L. plantarum exerted a more significant influence on the volatile compounds present in fermented sweet potato juice.

Soil salinity in the Altay region presents a formidable challenge that greatly jeopardizes the sustainability of human agriculture. Thus, it is necessary to monitor the salinization of agricultural land in the region and assess the corresponding drivers. A random forest regression model was constructed using the Google Earth Engine platform and the accuracy of different image inversion models was compared to achieve precise large-scale spatial inversion and the dynamic monitoring of topsoil salinity. Furthermore, augmented regression tree models were utilized for the quantitative monitoring and analysis of salinity drivers. The feature importance ranking method identified six vegetation and salinity spectral indices (brightness index, enhanced normalized difference vegetation index, salinity index 2, the improved salinity monitoring index, and salinity index) to exert the most significant impact on salinity. A comparison of the random forest models constructed from Landsat and Sentinel-2 data revealed that the degree of soil salinization in the study area was more accurately predicted using the former, achieving an R2 value of 0.905 and RMSE value of 2.8 g/kg. A general decline was observed in the salinization of agricultural land in the Altay region between 2000 and 2010, with 52.36 % experiencing reduced salinization. However, mild and moderate salinization areas in the Fuhai and Altay regions expanded during this period, increasing by 267 km2 and 496.59 km2, respectively. Irrigation water gradually emerged as a pivotal factor influencing the spatial distribution of topsoil salinity in agricultural fields within the study area. Furthermore, following the transition from traditional water-saving to information-based efficient water-saving, the volume of irrigation water emerged as a pivotal factor impacting topsoil salinity in the study area, with a contribution rising from 11.4 % to 18.8 %, thus placing it as the most important factor influencing salinity. This work enhances the understanding of the trends and drivers of agricultural land salinization, which is of paramount significance for addressing national food security, efficiently utilizing saline land, and mitigating the escalation and spread of salinization.

Targeting the poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) protein has shown therapeutic efficacy in cancers with homologous recombination (HR) deficiency due to BRCA mutations. Only small fraction of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells carry BRCA mutations, hence the antitumor efficacy of PARP inhibitors (PARPi) against this malignancy is predicted to be limited; however, recent preclinical studies have demonstrated that PARPi monotherapy has modest efficacy in AML, while in combination with cytotoxic chemotherapy it has remarkable synergistic antitumor effects. Immunotherapy has revolutionized therapeutics in cancer treatment, and PARPi creates an ideal microenvironment for combination therapy with immunomodulatory agents by promoting tumor mutation burden. In this review, we summarize the role of PARP proteins in DNA damage response (DDR) pathways, and discuss recent preclinical studies using synthetic lethal modalities to treat AML. We also review the immunomodulatory effects of PARPi in AML preclinical models and propose future directions for therapy in AML, including combined targeting of the DDR and tumor immune microenvironment; such combination regimens will likely benefit patients with AML undergoing PARPi-mediated cancer therapy.

The dynamic properties of concrete structures after being exposed to high temperatures play a crucial role in post-disaster repair and accident prevention measures. This study examined three different mixture ratios of Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete (SFRC) with matrix strength of C60 and steel fiber contents of 0%, 1%, and 2%. A Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) with a diameter of 75 mm, along with a heating furnace, was employed to comprehensively investigate the dynamic compression behavior of materials. The specimens were exposed to temperatures ranging from 200 °C to 600 °C. In addition to evaluating the extent of mechanical degradation in SFRC after cooling, auxiliary impact experiments were also carried out at ambient temperature. The experimental data revealed that the dynamic peak stress and peak strain initially increased but eventually decreased as the loading rates continued to rise. The degree of strengthening, toughening, and energy absorption capacity of concrete materials progressively decreased as the escalation of strain rate after the cooling process. Moreover, the inclusion of steel fibers proved effective in preventing cracking and damage to the concrete, preserving the integrity of specimens even at higher temperatures. Simultaneously, the residual stress and deformation capacity of SFRC showed considerable enhancement after exposure to elevated temperatures.

BackgroundDiabetes ranks among the most widespread diseases globally, with the kidneys being particularly susceptible to its vascular complications. The identification of proteins for pathogenesis and novel drug targets remains imperative. This study aims to investigate roles of circulating inflammatory proteins in diabetic renal complications.MethodsData on the proteins were derived from a genome-wide protein quantitative trait locus (pQTL) study, while data on diabetic renal complications came from the FinnGen study. In this study, proteome-wide Mendelian randomization (MR) and colocalization analyses were used to assess the relationship between circulating inflammatory proteins and diabetic renal complications.ResultsMR approach indicated that elevated levels of interleukin 12B (IL-12B) (OR 1.691, 95%CI 1.179–2.427, P=4.34×10-3) and LIF interleukin 6 family cytokine (LIF) (OR 1.349, 95%CI 1.010–1.801, P=4.23×10-2) increased the risk of type 1 diabetes (T1D) with renal complications, while higher levels of fibroblast growth factor 19 (FGF19) (OR 1.202, 95%CI 1.009–1.432, P=3.93×10-2), fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) (OR 1.379, 95%CI 1.035–1.837, P=2.82×10-2), C-C motif chemokine ligand 7 (CCL7) (OR 1.385, 95%CI 1.111–1.725, P=3.76×10-3), and TNF superfamily member 14 (TNFSF14) (OR 1.244, 95%CI 1.066–1.451, P=5.63×10-3) indicated potential risk factors for type 2 diabetes (T2D) with renal complications. Colocalization analysis supported these findings, revealing that most identified proteins, except for DNER, likely share causal variants with diabetic renal complications.ConclusionOur study established associations between specific circulating inflammatory proteins and the risk of diabetic renal complications, suggesting these proteins as targets for further investigation into the pathogenesis and potential therapeutic interventions for T1D and T2D with renal complications.

Summary: Here, we present a protocol for 3D printing heart tissues using thiol-norbornene photoclick collagen (NorCol). We describe steps for synthesizing NorCol, preparing bioink and the support bath, and cell-laden printing. We then detail procedures for the loading of C2C12 cells into NorCol, ensuring structural integrity and cell viability after printing. This protocol is adaptable to various cell lines and allows for the printing of diverse complex structures, which can be used in drug screening and disease modeling. : Publisher’s note: Undertaking any experimental protocol requires adherence to local institutional guidelines for laboratory safety and ethics.

For a finite field GF(pL) with prime p and L>1, one of the standard representations is L×L matrices over GF(p) so that the arithmetic of GF(pL) can be realized by the arithmetic among these matrices over GF(p). Based on the matrix representation of GF(pL), a conventional linear network coding scheme over GF(pL) can be transformed to an L-dimensional vector LNC scheme over GF(p). Recently, a few real implementations of coding schemes over GF(2L), such as the Reed–Solomon (RS) codes in the ISA-L library and the Cauchy-RS codes in the Longhair library, are built upon the classical result to achieve matrix representation, which focuses more on the structure of every individual matrix but does not shed light on the inherent correlation among matrices which corresponds to different elements. In this paper, we first generalize this classical result from over GF(2L) to over GF(pL) and paraphrase it from the perspective of matrices with different powers to make the inherent correlation among these matrices more transparent. Moreover, motivated by this correlation, we can devise a lookup table to pre-store the matrix representation with a smaller size than the one utilized in current implementations. In addition, this correlation also implies useful theoretical results which can be adopted to further demonstrate the advantages of binary matrix representation in vector LNC. In the following part of this paper, we focus on the study of vector LNC and investigate the applications of matrix representation related to the aspects of random and deterministic vector LNC.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary riboflavin levels on the reproductive performance of pigeon breeders and the growth performance and carcass traits of offspring squabs to estimate the riboflavin requirement of pigeon breeders. The natural riboflavin content in the basic diet of corn–peas–soybean–wheat–sorghum–corn gluten is 1.20 mg/kg. Different doses of riboflavin (0, 2.5, 5, 10, and 15 mg/kg) were supplemented with the basal diet to produce five dietary treatments with total riboflavin levels of 1.20, 3.70, 6.20, 10.20, and 16.20 mg/kg. A total of 120 pairs of White King pigeons, aged 60 wks, were randomly allocated into five treatment groups, each consisting of 24 pairs. Each pair was individually raised for 8 wks. After the experiment, an assessment was conducted to evaluate the reproductive performance of the pigeon breeders, as well as the growth and carcass traits of offspring squabs at 28 days of age. The results showed that the dietary riboflavin levels had no significant effect on body weight, feed intake, egg weight, egg production, and egg fertility (p > 0.05). However, pigeons fed a diet without riboflavin had the lowest egg hatchability, egg yolk color, carcass trait, and riboflavin status, while exhibiting higher liver weight and liver index (p < 0.05). Moreover, the indices above showed increased or decreased linearly as the level of riboflavin was increased in the diet. Based on the broken-line regression model, pigeon breeders were determined to require a dietary riboflavin content of 11.4, 13.6, 13.4, 6.60, 4.28, 4.47, 4.67, 6.69, and 6.82 mg/kg to optimize hatchability, eviscerated weight, half-eviscerated weight, breast muscle weight, breast muscle percentage, liver weight, liver index, egg yolk riboflavin, and squab plasma riboflavin, respectively. In conclusion, the optimal supplemental dosage of riboflavin in the diets of pigeon breeders is 13.6 mg/kg.

Abstract Background Health problems in neonates with gestational age (GA) ≥ 32 weeks remain a major medical concern. Respiratory distress (RD) is one of the common reasons for admission of neonates with GA ≥ 32 weeks. Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) represents a crucial approach to treat RD, and currently, the most used NIV modes in neonatal intensive care unit include high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC), continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), and nasal intermittent positive pressure ventilation. Mechanical force is crucial in the whole process of embryonic development. However, the role of trophoblast mechanics during embryo implantation has rarely been studied. In this study, we constructed a model to explore the effect of stiffness changes in mouse trophoblast stem cells (mTSCs) on implantation: microcarrier was prepared by sodium alginate using a droplet microfluidics system, and mTSCs were attached to the microcarrier surface with laminin modifications, called T(micro). Compared with the spheroid, formed by the self-assembly of mTSCs (T(sph)), we could regulate the stiffness of the microcarrier, making the Young's modulus of mTSCs (367.70 ± 79.81 Pa) similar to that of the blastocyst trophoblast ectoderm (432.49 ± 151.90 Pa). Moreover, T(micro) contributes to improve the adhesion rate, expansion area and invasion depth of mTSCs. Further, T(micro) was highly expressed in tissue migration-related genes due to the activation of the Rho-associated coiled-coil containing protein kinase (ROCK) pathway at relatively similar modulus of trophoblast. Overall, our study explores the embryo implantation process with a new perspective, and provides theoretical support for understanding the effect of mechanics on embryo implantation.

Abstract Background Mechanical ventilation (MV) is essential in the management of critically ill neonates, especially preterm infants. However, inappropriate or prolonged use of invasive MV may result in ventilator-associated lung injury. A systemic review comparing pressure control ventilation (PCV) with volume-targeted ventilation mode (VTV) approved that VTV reduces the incidence of death or bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in neonates; however, this study did not analyze subgroups of very low birthweight (VLBW) infants. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the use of VTV and PCV in VLBW infants and to provide clinical evidence for reducing mortality and complications of MV in VLBW infants. Method A single-center randomized controlled trial will be performed. All eligible infants will be randomized and assigned to either VTV or PCV group with 1:1 ratio using sealed envelopes. Death or BPD at 36 weeks’ postmenstrual age will be used as the primary outcome. Secondary outcomes include BPD, death, length of invasive MV, noninvasive mechanical ventilation, and oxygen use, length of hospital stay, failure of conventional MV, rate of using high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) as rescue therapy, rate of reintubation within 48 h, and hospital expenses. Discussion Systemic review suggested that VTV decreases the incidence of death or BPD in neonates compared to PLV; however, this study did not specifically analyze subgroups of VLBW infants. We designed this single-center randomized controlled trials (RCT) to add a significant contribution regarding the benefits of VTV for VLBW patients.

Introduction: Previous studies have proven that different tillage measures have significant different effects on soil structure, hydrology properties and soil erosion. However, few studies have clarified the dynamic changes in soil aggregate stability and infiltration properties during crop growth under four tillage measures.Methods: Four field plots (150 m × 15 m) managed by four tillage methods including wide ridge tillage (DT), no-tillage (NT), contour ridge tillage (CT) and traditional tillage (CK) were built in 2021 to evaluate their effects on dynamic changes of soil structure and water conductivity during crop growth. Soybean was the seasonal crop. Soil bulk density, soil porosity, soil aggregate stability and soil infiltration characteristics were measured to assess dynamic changes in soil aggregate stability and infiltration from June to October 2022.Results: The results showed that NT significantly increased soil bulk density by up to 21.62% compared with CK, while DT did not show significantly increase in soil bulk density. DT, NT and CT could greatly increase the capillary porosity and proportion of capillary porosity to total porosity. DT and NT also improved the stability of soil water-stable aggregates by 3.37% and 10.6%. In terms of soil infiltration properties, all three tillage methods increased the initial, stable and average infiltration rates by 8.4%–52.94%, of which the DT and NT showed the greatest improvement. The soil infiltration process of four tillage measures could be better fitted by Horton model than Kostiakov and Philip models. Soil saturated hydraulic conductivity (SHC) of CK exhibited a significant negative correlation with soil bulk density and capillary porosity, and showed a positive correlation with total porosity and geometric average diameter of water-stable aggregate (GMD), whereas the other three treatments only displayed a significant correlation with the stability of soil water-stable aggregate.Conclusion: The results suggest that DT, NT and CT have potential to improve soil structure and infiltration capacity compared with CK, and contribute to preventing and controlling soil erosion in sloping farmland of Northeast China.

The deposition of cholesterol-rich lipoproteins in the arterial wall triggers macrophage inflammatory responses, which promote atherosclerosis. The NLRP3 inflammasome aggravates atherosclerosis; however, cellular mechanisms connecting macrophage cholesterol accumulation to inflammasome activation are poorly understood. We investigated the mechanisms of NLRP3 inflammasome activation in cholesterol-loaded macrophages and in atherosclerosis-prone Ldlr−/− mice with defects in macrophage cholesterol efflux. We found that accumulation of cholesterol in macrophages treated with modified LDL or cholesterol crystals, or in macrophages defective in the cholesterol efflux promoting transporters ABCA1 and ABCG1, leads to activation of NLRP3 inflammasomes as a result of increased cholesterol trafficking from the plasma membrane to the ER, via Aster-B. In turn, the accumulation of cholesterol in the ER activates the inositol triphosphate-3 receptor, CaMKII/JNK, and induces NLRP3 deubiquitylation by BRCC3. An NLRP3 deubiquitylation inhibitor or deficiency of Abro1, an essential scaffolding protein in the BRCC3-containing cytosolic complex, suppressed inflammasome activation, neutrophil extracellular trap formation (NETosis), and atherosclerosis in vivo. These results identify a link between the trafficking of cholesterol to the ER, NLRP3 deubiquitylation, inflammasome activation, and atherosclerosis.

Ovarian cancer is a prevalent malignant tumor of the female reproductive system, often remaining concealed until it reaches an advanced stage. The standard treatment protocol includes cytoreductive surgery for ovarian cancer plus postoperative consolidation chemotherapy and maintenance therapy, although it carries a high recurrence rate. During the treatment period, chemotherapy can lead to bone marrow suppression, a condition known as Chemotherapy-Induced Myelosuppression (CIM). This suppression may necessitate dose reduction or chemotherapy treatment cycle delay. In severe cases, CIM can result in infection, fever, and potential harm to the patient’s life. Here, we report a case of a female patient with ovarian malignant tumor of biochemical recurrence who treated with chemotherapy combined with Trilaciclib, following previous perioperative chemotherapy with occurrence of severe CIM. It involves an intravenous injection of Trilaciclib before chemotherapy, which significantly abates the side effects of chemotherapy, reduces the occurrence of severe CIM, improves the patients’ quality of life, and decreases the economic burden of hospitalization. We hope that this retrospective analysis of the case may serve as a reference in preventing and treating severe CIM during chemotherapy in some patients with malignant tumors, ultimately benefiting more patients with tumors.

Abstract Olfactomedin4 (Olfm4) is expressed in normal mouse prostate. However, Olfm4+ cells in the murine prostate have not been well characterized. In this study, we generated an Olfm4 eGFP reporter mouse line with C57BL/6 mice and investigated the distribution of Olfm4/eGFP-expressing cells during postnatal development from P1, P7, P14, P20, P42, P56 to adult male mouse prostate and urethral tube. We observed Olfm4/eGFP expression in urogenital and prostatic epithelial cells during early postnatal development, which persisted into adulthood in urethral-tube and anterior-prostate (AP) epithelium. We found Olfm4+ cells are E-cadherin+/CD44+/Foxa1+ and some of subpopulation are Ck8+/Ck5+/Sca-1-/Ck4-/Syn- in the adult mouse AP epithelium. Functional studies of single-cell preparations of Olfm4/eGFP-expressing cells isolated from adult Olfm4 eGFP mouse prostate demonstrated that Olfm4+ cells can grow and form colonies, spheres, or organoids in culture. Bioinformatic analysis of Olfm4+ cells using single-cell RNA sequencing meta data in adult mouse urethra (GSE145865) identified upregulation of genes related to cell and tissue migration and development, as well as upregulation of xenobiotic metabolism signaling pathways. In conclusion, Olfm4 eGFP mouse is a novel model to further study Olfm4’s biological functions and Olfm4+ cells may contribute importantly to cellular processes supporting development and homeostasis of the epithelium in murine prostate and urethral tube.

Background: With rising interest in complementary approaches to symptom management, awareness of real-world practice patterns in the incorporation of integrative oncology (IO) into cancer care is limited. Therefore, we examined the reasons for referral, symptom burdens, and clinical outcomes for cancer patients who underwent initial IO consultations. Methods: The records of adult patients with cancer who underwent initial outpatient IO consultations at our cancer center for a representative 10-day period at the start of each month for 12 months starting January 1, 2017, were reviewed retrospectively. Patient demographic and medical characteristics and outpatient IO consultation details, including patient-reported outcome measures of symptom burden, were extracted. Descriptive summary statistics and logistic regression were used to analyze the data. Results: Among the 473 study patients, 71% were women, breast cancer (42%) was the most common cancer type, and 31% had metastatic cancer. Referring clinicians listed an integrative approach (57%) as the most common reason for referral, followed by diet (26%), pain (19%), discussion of herbs and supplements (18%), and stress (18%). In comparison, patients listed their primary concerns as diet (16%), pain (15%), and an integrative approach to overall health (11%). Microbiome research is concerned with the study of the compositional profile and diversity of microbial flora as well as the interactions between microbes, hosts, and the environment. It has opened up many new possibilities for forensic analysis. In this review, we discuss various applications of microbiome in forensics, including identification of individuals, geolocation inference, and post-mortem interval (PMI) estimation.

Abstract This pilot randomized controlled trial investigated massage therapy for symptomatic relief of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) to determine the ideal weekly frequency and number of weeks of providing massage. We evaluated the feasibility and initial efficacy of a Swedish massage protocol to treat lower extremity (LE) CIPN. Inclusion criteria: LE neuropathy attributed to oxaliplatin, paclitaxel, or docetaxel, with no other attributable causes; ≥ 6 months since last chemotherapy; self-reported neuropathy score ≥ 3, 0–10 scale; age ≥ 18. Participant randomization (2:2:1:1) to one of four groups: LE (2) or head/neck/shoulder (control; 1) massage 3 times (3X) a week for 4 weeks; LE (2) or control (1) massage 2X/week for 6 weeks. Completion rate and the Pain Quality Assessment Scale (PQAS) was measured at baseline and 10 weeks later. 71 patients participated: 77.5% women; 57.7% (breast cancer), and 42.3% (GI cancer); mean age 60.3 y/o (range: 40–77); average > 3 years since last chemotherapy. Massage was deemed feasible: mean completion rates (max = 12) were 8.9 (SD 4.2) for 3X/week and 9.8 (SD 4.0) for 2X/week with no statistically significant differences. Abstract Sepsis is an uncontrolled host response to infection, resulting in a clinical syndrome involving multiple organ dysfunctions. Cardiac damage is the most common organ damage in sepsis. Uncontrolled inflammatory response is an important mechanism in the pathogenesis of septic cardiomyopathy (SCM). NLRP3 inflammasome promotes inflammatory response by controlling the activation of caspase‐1 and the release of pro‐inflammatory cytokines interleukin IL‐1β and IL‐18. The role of NLRP3 inflammasome has received increasing attention, but its activation mechanism and regulation of inflammation in SCM remain to be investigated.

ABSTRACT: This study was performed to develop a predictive growth model of Pseudomonas spp. to ensure the safety of fresh duck breast. Sterile fresh duck breasts were inoculated with Pseudomonas spp. and stored at 4°C, 10°C, 15°C, 20°C, 25°C, and 30°C to measure the microbial change. The Baranyi primary model was used to simulate the growth changes of Pseudomonas spp. at different temperatures. The square root type model and hyperbolic function as secondary models were used to model the effect of temperature on the maximum specific growth rate and lag phase duration. The results showed that the primary models fitted the growth data well (all R2 > 0.900 and RMSE were close to 0). In validation study of secondary model, R2 were 0.987 and 0.925, RMSE were 0.017 and 1.825, respectively, indicating that the parameters of primary models were accurately predicted by secondary models. The validation experiments at tested temperatures proved that the changes of Pseudomonas spp. could be predicted accurately by the developed models combining primary and secondary models both at constant and variable temperatures. The model could be applied to predict the growth of Pseudomonas spp. in logistics for avoiding microbial spoilage on fresh duck breast.

Aeromonas hydrophila is a conditional pathogen impacting public hygiene and safety. Hemolysin is a virulence factor of Aeromonas hydrophila that causes erythrocyte hemolysis, yet its transcriptional response to Cyprinus rubrofuscus remains unknown. Our investigation confirmed the hemolysis of hemolysin from A. hydrophila. Serum enzyme activity was evaluated weekly after C. rubrofuscus were immunized with hemolysin Ahh1. The results showed that the hemolysin enhances the serum superoxide dismutase (SOD), lysozyme (LZM), and catalase (CAT) activity, which reached a maximum on day 14. To elucidate the molecular interaction between hemolysin from A. hydrophila and the host, we performed transcriptome sequencing on the spleen of C. rubrofuscus 14 days post hemolysin infection. The total number of clean reads was 41.37 Gb, resulting in 79,832 unigenes with an N50 length of 1863 bp. There were 1982 significantly differentially expressed genes (DEGs), including 1083 upregulated genes and 899 downregulated genes. Transcript levels of the genes, such as LA6BL, CD2, and NLRC5, were significantly downregulated, while those of IL11, IL1R2, and IL8 were dramatically upregulated. The DEGs were mainly enriched in the immune disease, viral protein interaction with cytokine and cytokine receptor, and toll-like receptor pathways, suggesting that hemolysin stimulation can activate the transcriptional responses. RT-qPCR experiments results of seven genes, IL-8, STAT2, CTSK, PRF1, CXCL9, TLR5, and SACS, showed that their expression was highly concordant with RNA-seq data. We clarified for the first time the key genes and signaling pathways response to hemolysin from A. hydrophila, which offers strategies for treating and preventing diseases.

The intermittency and uncertainty of wind energy make transmission congestion management increasingly complex. In this paper, we investigate the impact of wind energy on available transmission capacity (ATC) and then explore ways to mitigate transmission congestion from the grid and load side, respectively. The impact of a stochastic variable is considered by applying Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS) and backward curtailment techniques to generate typical scenarios. ATC is improved by the optimal allocation of Thyristor Controlled Series Compensation (TCSC) on the grid side and the use of Demand Response (DR) on the load side. The source-grid-load cooperative optimisation model for ATC is solved by an improved particle swarm optimisation (PSO) algorithm. Based on the IEEE-30 bus system, an experimental scheme is designed and analytical calculations are performed. The results show that the joint application of TCSC and DR can help to improve ATC in a comprehensive way. The work done in this paper can achieve the purpose of promoting renewable energy consumption by improving the utilisation efficiency of the transmission network without changing the network structure.

Ticks play a significant role in transmitting arboviruses, which pose a risk to human and animal health. The region of Liaoning Province, China, with abundant plant resources with multiple tick populations, has reported several tick-borne diseases. However, there remains a scarcity of research on the composition and evolution of the tick virome. In this study, we conducted the metagenomic analysis of 561 ticks in the border area of Liaoning Province in China and identified viruses related to known diseases in humans and animals, including severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) and nairobi sheep disease virus (NSDV). Moreover, the groups of tick viruses were also closely related to the families of Flaviviridae, Parvoviridae, Phenuiviridae, and Rhabdoviridae. Notably, the Dabieshan tick virus (DBTV) of the family Phenuiviridae was prevalent in these ticks, with the minimum infection rate (MIR) of 9.09%, higher than previously reported in numerous provinces in China. In addition, sequences of tick-borne viruses of the family Rhabdoviridae have first been reported from the border area of Liaoning Province, China, after being described from Hubei Province, China. This research furthered the insight into pathogens carried by ticks in the northeastern border areas of China, offering epidemiological information for possible forthcoming outbreaks of infectious diseases. Meanwhile, we provided an essential reference for assessing the risk of tick bite infection in humans and animals, as well as for exploring into the evolution of the virus and the mechanisms of species transmission.

In order to strengthen the management of aquaculture sea and realize the sustainable development of mariculture industry in China, based on the definition of the types of aquaculture sea, this paper comprehensively evaluated the current situation and existing problems of aquaculture sea in China, and put forward countermeasures and suggestions. The results showed that the aquaculture sea usage included open mariculture and cofferdam mariculture. The area of aquaculture sea had shown an overall increasing trend, but a decreasing trend in recent years, and had the characteristics of uneven distribution, mainly open mariculture and cofferdam mariculture occupying a large number of natural shorelines. At present, there were some problems in China′s aquaculture sea, such as the squeeze of sea space, illegal use of sea, serious impact of marine disasters, marine ecological environment pollution, cross management and unclear rights and responsibilities. In the future, we should promote the supply side structural reform of aquaculture sea and expand the space of blue aquaculture, strengthen the control of the use of sea resources and optimize the sea space for aquaculture, reinforce the construction of marine ecological civilization and improve the ecological environment of aquaculture sea areas.

Neighborhood renewal is now an important approach to sustainable urban development in China. However, neighborhood renewal projects are often beset with social problems such as noncooperation from residents, which can be attributed to diverse interests and complex relationships among residents. However, there is little research on resident relations in China and intra-resident conflict. Based on social capital, this study provided a better understanding of resident relationships in neighborhood renewal in China. To this end, we developed a theoretical framework of residents’ multidimensional social capital (structural, relational, and cognitive). Then, a survey was conducted to collect data from 590 residents across China who were experiencing or had experienced neighborhood renewal. Structural equation modeling (SEM) and multiple indicators multiple causes (MIMIC) modeling were used. The results revealed positive effects of structural social capital on relational and cognitive social capital, and the mediation role of relational social capital was demonstrated. We also tested the effects of differences in sociodemographic characteristics. Our findings verify the explanatory power of social capital regarding residents’ complex relationships in neighborhood renewal in China. Implications for theory and policy are discussed. This study helps to improve our understanding of residents’ social systems in neighborhood renewal and provides theoretical support for formulating neighborhood renewal policies in China and abroad.

Abstract Despite the initial success of some drugs and vaccines targeting COVID-19, understanding the mechanism underlying SARS-CoV-2 disease pathogenesis remains crucial for the development of further approaches to treatment. Some patients with severe Covid-19 experience a cytokine storm and display evidence of inflammasome activation leading to increased levels of IL-1β and IL-18; however, other reports have suggested reduced inflammatory responses to Sars-Cov-2. In this study we have examined the effects of the Sars-Cov-2 envelope (E) protein, a virulence factor in coronaviruses, on inflammasome activation and pulmonary inflammation. In cultured macrophages the E protein suppressed inflammasome priming and NLRP3 inflammasome activation. Similarly, in mice transfected with E protein and treated with poly(I:C) to simulate the effects of viral RNA, the E protein, in an NLRP3-dependent fashion, reduced expression of pro-IL-1β, levels of IL-1β and IL-18 in broncho-alveolar lavage fluid, and macrophage infiltration in the lung. To simulate the effects of more advanced infection, macrophages were treated with both LPS and poly(I:C). In this setting the E protein increased NLRP3 inflammasome activation in both murine and human macrophages. Thus, the Sars-Cov-2 E protein may initially suppress the host NLRP3 inflammasome response to viral RNA while potentially increasing NLRP3 inflammasome responses in the later stages of infection. Targeting the Sars-Cov-2 E protein especially in the early stages of infection may represent a novel approach to Covid-19 therapy.

An acid modified approach to enhance the adsorption capacity of low-rank coal (lignite) is proposed to reduce the risk of heavy metal ions within the wastewater. Adsorption kinetics, adsorption thermodynamics, adsorption coefficient and density functional theory DFT calculations were studied in this paper, respectively. The results indicate that the adsorption capacity of lignite was enlarged after HNO3 modification, and pseudo-second order kinetics model and Langmuir isothermal adsorption model can be used to describe the adsorption process. The surface chemical properties of lignite play a dominant role rather than the specific surface area and total pore volume in the Pb(II) cation adsorption process, and it is suggested that the adsorption of Pb(II) cation by raw lignite (RL) and modified lignite (ML) is mainly completed by chemical adsorption. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) characterization showed that the surface oxygen functional groups of lignite increased after modification. The results of interaction energies between the model molecule and Pb(II) cation show that Pb(II) cation and -C-O-C are most easily combined, followed by -COOH, and -C = O is the weakest. HIGHLIGHTS The adsorption mechanisms of raw and modified lignite and Pb(II) cation were summarized.; The original hemidirected structure of Pb(II) cation is broken, and a polar covalent bond is formed.; A large number of flocculent precipitates were generated rapidly with the chelating reaction between humic acid molecules and Pb(II) cation.; The adsorption of Pb(II) cation by lignite was a chemical adsorption process.;

Abstract Background The commonly used NEMA IEC Body phantom has a number of defects, hindering its application for detecting micro-lesions and measuring the performance parameters of computed tomography (CT). This study aimed to propose a PET/CT phantom designed by National Institute of Metrology (NIM), China, which is capable of simultaneously testing the performance of PET and CT systems, and to evaluate the quality of imaging. Methods The phantom developed in the present study, the NIM PET/CT phantom, is composed of a PET imaging module and a CT imaging module, and these modules are connected together through bolts, which can simultaneously measure the imaging performance of PET and CT systems. Hot spheres were filled with 4:1 sphere-to-background activity concentration using 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG), and cold spheres were filled with non-radioactive water. We compared the results of imaging obtained from the NIM PET/CT phantom and the NEMA IEC Body phantom to assess their diagnostic efficacy. In order to evaluate the generalization ability of the NIM PET/CT phantom, three different PET/CT systems were used to scan on the same scanning protocol. To evaluate the effects of image reconstruction algorithms on image quality assessment, ordered subset expectation maximization (OSEM), OSEM-point-spread function (PSF), OSEM-TOF, and OSEM-PSF-TOF algorithms were employed. Results The imaging quality of the NIM PET/CT phantom and the NEMA IEC Body phantom was relatively consistent. The NIM PET/CT phantom could detect 7 mm spheres without influencing the imaging quality. It was found that PSF reconstruction exhibited to reduce the speed of convergence, the contrast and background variability of spheres (13–28 mm) were significantly improved after two iterations. In addition to improve the image contrast and background variability, TOF could markedly improve the overall image quality and instrument detection limit. TOF-PSF could noticeably reduce noise level, enhance imaging details, and improve quality of imaging. Conclusions The results showed that in comparison with the NEMA IEC Body phantom, the NIM PET/CT phantom outperformed in evaluating the PET image quality of micro-lesions and the performance parameters of CT.

Background: We explored the use of a novel smart phone-based application (APP) for delivery and monitoring of meditation to treat mood symptoms experienced by cancer patients Methods: We assessed the feasibility of using a meditation delivery and tracking APP over 2-weeks and its impact on cancer patients’ self-reported anxiety and depression. Outpatients reporting depression and/or anxiety were recruited and randomized to the APP or waitlist control group. Assessments included an expectancy scale, exit survey, mood rating before and after each meditation, and the Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS-FS), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) at baseline and after 2-weeks. The primary aim was to assess feasibility; secondary aims included satisfaction with the APP, association between meditation frequency and length with self-reported symptoms, and change in symptom measures (symptoms, anxiety, depression, and sleep). Results: Our study included 35 participants (17 meditation group; 18 controls) who were primarily female (94%) with breast cancer (60%). The 61% enrollment rate and 71% adherence rate met pre-specified feasibility criteria. Most meditation group participants described the APP as “Useful” to “Very Useful” and would “Probably” or “Definitely” recommend its use. Mixed model analysis revealed a statistically significant association between meditation length (5, 10, or 15 minutes) and change in anxiety, with 15-minute sessions associated with greater reductions in anxiety. In the exit survey, more meditation group vs. control group participants reported improved focus, mood, and sleep. Study groups differed significantly by ESAS fatigue score change; the meditation group decreased a median of 1.5 pts (IQR 2.5) and the control group increased a median of 0.5 points (IQR 2). The meditation group, but not the control group, experienced statistically significant improvement in ESAS fatigue, depression, anxiety, appetite, and physical, psychological, and global distress. Change in PSQI and HADS anxiety and depression scores did not reveal any statistically significant between-group differences. Conclusions: This pilot study demonstrated the feasibility and acceptability of a meditation APP for cancer patients. Meditation APP users reported improvement in several measures of symptom distress. Future studies should explore ways to enhance the APP’s usability and clinical benefit.

Chinese spicy cabbage (CSC) is a common traditional fermented vegetable mainly made of Chinese cabbage. In addition to eating raw, boiling and stir-frying are the most common cooking methods for CSC. To identify the impacts of boiling or stir-frying on the quality of CSC, the physicochemical properties, flavor compounds, and sensory properties of CSC were analyzed. A total of 47 volatile flavor compounds (VFCs) were detected by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Sulfide was determined as the main flavor compound of CSC, mainly contributed by cabbage, garlic, and onion odors. The content of sulfide decreased significantly after cooking. Nonanal, geranyl acetate, and linalool were newly generated after boiling with odor activity value (OAV) > 1, and contributed fatty, sweet, fruity, and floral odors to BL-CSC. 1-Octen-3-one, 1-octen-3-ol, octanal, nonanal, and (E)-2-nonenal were newly generated after stir-frying with OAV > 1, and contributed mushroom, fatty, and green odors to SF-CSC. Diallyl trisulfide, nonanal, (E)-β-ionone, β-sesquiphellandrene, and (E)-2-decenal were considered as the potential key aroma compounds (KACs) to distinguish the CSCs after different heat treatment. After cooking, the total titratable acidity of CSC increased and the sensory properties changed significantly. This study provides valuable information and guidance on the sensory and flavor changes of thermal processing fermented vegetables.

Abstract Background UBTF is an HMGB-box DNA binding protein and a necessary Pol I/Pol II basal transcription factor. It has been found that UBTF involves in carcinogenesis and progression of a few cancers. Nevertheless, the the biological function and potential molecular mechanism of UBTF in melanoma are still not clear and need to be clarified. Methods UBTF and GIT1 expressions in melanoma specimens and cell lines were examined by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) and Western blot. MTT and colony formation assays were used to investigate the effects of UBTF and GIT1 on melanoma cell proliferation. Cell cycle and apoptosis assays were detected by flow cytometry. Tumor formation assay was used to analyze the effect of UBTF on melanoma growth. Bioinformatics predicting, chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP)-qRT-PCR and reporter gene assay were fulfilled for verifing GIT1 as UBTF targeting gene. Results Here we reported that UBTF mRNA and protein expressions were upregulated in primary melanoma specimens and cell lines. UBTF overexpression facilitated melanoma cell proliferation and cell cycle progression and restrained. Silencing UBTF suppressed cell multiplication, cell cycle progression and tumor growth, and promoted apoptosis. UBTF expression was positively related with GIT1 expression in human melanoma tissues. It was verified that UBTF promoted GIT1 transcription in melanoma cells through binding to the promoter region of GIT1. Furthermore, GIT1 overexpression promoted melanoma cell growth and suppressed apoptosis. Knockdown of GIT1 inhibited cell multiplication and induced apoptosis. Overexpression of GIT1 eliminated the effects of silencing UBTF on melanoma cells. Importantly, UBTF activated MEK1/2-ERK1/2 signalling pathways by upregulating GIT1 expression. Conclusions Our study demonstrates that UBTF promotes melanoma cell proliferation and cell cycle progression by promoting GIT1 transcription, thereby activating MEK1/2-ERK1/2 signalling pathways. The findings indicate that UBTF plays a crucial function in melanoma and may be a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of this disease.

Current methods to identify G-quadruplex structures in DNA require specialized protocols and multiple rounds of sequencing. Here, the authors develop a method to detect G-quadruplex structures in DNA based on fluctuations in sequencing quality in a standard sequencing experiment.

Abstract Objective Observe the influence of oral nutritional agents rich in soluble dietary (enteral nutritional suspension [TPF‐DM]) on intestinal flora of elderly male subjects with malnutrition. Method Seventy‐eight subjects with good nutrition were considered as the healthy control group. Twenty‐eight male subjects who had malnutrition and were older than 70 years were included and randomly divided into the short‐term (3 months) intervention group (n = 20) and the long‐term (12 months) group (n = 8). They were provided with enteral nutritional suspension (TPF‐DM) 500 mL/day or maximum tolerance dose, so as to observe the changes in nutrition‐related indexes and intestinal flora after the elderly take enteral nutritional suspension (TPF‐DM). Results (1) For elderly male subjects with malnutrition, their body weight, body mass index, hemoglobin, total protein, and albumin were significantly lower than the control group with favorable nutrition. (2) There were obvious differences in intestinal flora between healthy elderly male subjects and those with malnutrition. After the treatment of enteral nutritional suspension (TPF‐DM), intestinal flora of the malnourished elderly subjects showed recovery toward the healthy elderly subjects. The obvious gradient changes of the flora were mainly in the bacteroidetes, firmicutes, and proteobacteria phyla, and the relative abundance of CAG2 clusters in the malnourished group was higher than that in the healthy control group, and the relative abundance decreased after long‐term treatment, and the change approached the healthy control group. The relative abundance of CAG3 and CAG6 clusters in the malnourished group was lower than that in the healthy control group, and the relative abundance increased after long‐term treatment, and the change approached the healthy control group. Conclusion Malnutrition has obvious impact on intestinal flora of the elderly. Enteral nutritional suspension (TPF‐DM) not only prevents the further decline in the state of nutrition but also helps the recovery in intestinal flora of the elderly. Long‐term application can produce better effects.

Abstract Background Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) has become a vital disease with high mortality in the Uygur populations. Clopidogrel plays an important role in reducing the risk of recurrent cardiovascular events after ACS; however, it is a prodrug that requires biotransformation by cytochrome P450 (CYP450). Objectives To determine the effect of genetic polymorphisms in CYP2C19*2, *3, and *17, and along with clinical, demographic factors, on variation in response to clinical outcomes in Uygur patients. Methods A total of 351 patients with ACS were treated with clopidogrel and aspirin for at least 12 months; we recorded major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) or bleeding within 1 year. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were carried out to identify factors associated with MACE or bleeding. Results We analyze risk factors include age, BMI (body mass index), smoking, alcohol intake, NSTEMI (non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction), hypertension, dyslipidemia, concomitant medication, CYP2C19*2 carriers, CYP2C19*17 carriers and metabolizer phenotype. CYP2C19*2 carriers had an odds of having MACE of 2.51 (95% CI: 1.534–4.09) compared with noncarriers (P 0.05). Conclusion The CYP2C19*2 gene polymorphism contributes to the risk of MACE in dual clopidogrel—treated Uygur population with ACS with or without PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention). These data may provide valuable insights into the genetic polymorphisms affecting clopidogrel metabolism among minority groups in China.

Abstract Membranous nephropathy (MN) is a common cause of nephrotic syndrome. The aim is to establish a non‐invasive diagnostic model of MN using differential gut microbiome analysis, and to explore the relationship between the gut microbiome and MN pathogenesis in vivo. 825 fecal samples from MN patients and healthy participants are collected from multiple medical centers across China. Key operational taxonomic units (OTUs) obtained through 16S rRNA sequencing are used to establish a diagnostic model. A rat model of MN is developed to explore the relationship between the gut microbiome and the pathogenesis of MN. The diversity and richness of the gut microbiome are significantly lower in patients with MN than in healthy individuals. The diagnostic model based on seven OTUs achieves an excellent efficiency of 98.36% in the training group and also achieves high efficiency in cross‐regional cohorts. In MN rat model, gut microbiome elimination prevents model establishment, but fecal microbiome transplantation restores the phenotype of protein urine. Gut microbiome analysis can be used as a non‐invasive tool for MN diagnosis. The onset of MN depends on the presence of naturally colonized microbiome. Early intervention in the gut microbiome may help reduce urinary protein level in MN.

Elevated hematocrit is associated with cardiovascular risk; however, the causality and mechanisms are unclear. The JAK2V617F (Jak2VF) mutation increases cardiovascular risk in myeloproliferative disorders and in clonal hematopoiesis. Jak2VF mice with elevated WBCs, platelets, and RBCs display accelerated atherosclerosis and macrophage erythrophagocytosis. To investigate whether selective erythroid Jak2VF expression promotes atherosclerosis, we developed hyperlipidemic erythropoietin receptor Cre mice that express Jak2VF in the erythroid lineage (VFEpoR mice). VFEpoR mice without elevated blood cell counts showed increased atherosclerotic plaque necrosis, erythrophagocytosis, and ferroptosis. Selective induction of erythrocytosis with low-dose erythropoietin further exacerbated atherosclerosis with prominent ferroptosis, lipid peroxidation, and endothelial damage. VFEpoR RBCs had reduced antioxidant defenses and increased lipid hydroperoxides. Phagocytosis of human or murine WT or JAK2VF RBCs by WT macrophages induced ferroptosis, which was prevented by the ferroptosis inhibitor liproxstatin-1. Liproxstatin-1 reversed increased atherosclerosis, lipid peroxidation, ferroptosis, and endothelial damage in VFEpoR mice and in Jak2VF chimeric mice simulating clonal hematopoiesis, but had no impact in controls. Erythroid lineage Jak2VF expression led to qualitative and quantitative defects in RBCs that exacerbated atherosclerosis. Phagocytosis of RBCs by plaque macrophages promoted ferroptosis, suggesting a therapeutic target for reducing RBC-mediated cardiovascular risk.

Epilepsy, a severe brain disease affecting a large population, is treated mainly by antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). However, toxicity, intolerance, and low efficiency of the available AEDs have prompted the continual attempts in the discovery of new AEDs. In this study, we discovered a skeleton of triazolopyrimidine for the development of new AEDs. The design, synthesis, in vivo anticonvulsant activity evaluation of triazolopyrimidines (3a–3i and 6a–6e), and pyrazolopyrimidines (4a–4i) are reported. We found that most triazolopyrimidines showed anticonvulsive activity in the maximal electroshock (MES) and pentetrazol (PTZ)-induced seizure models. On the contrary, pyrazolopyrimidines (4a–4i) showed weak or no protective effects. Among the tested derivatives, compound 6d, holding a median effective dose (ED50) of 15.8 and 14.1 mg/kg against MES and PTZ-induced seizures, respectively, was found to be the most potent one. Moreover, the protection index (PI) value of 6d was significantly higher than that of the available AEDs such as valproate, carbamazepine, and diazepam. The antiepileptic efficacy of compound 6d was also observed in the 3-mercaptopropionic acid and bicuculline-induced seizure models. Antagonistic effects of flumazenil and 3-MP for the anticonvulsive activity of 6d and also the radioligand-binding assay confirmed the involvement of GABA receptors, at least benzodiazepine (BZD) receptor, in the anticonvulsant activity of compound 6d. The docking study of compounds 4e and 6d with GABAA receptor confirmed and explained their affinity to the BZD receptors.

This study used data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study to investigate the temporal relationship between blood lipids and sleep duration in Chinese middle-aged and older adults. We used medical examinations and questionnaire data of 5,016 Chinese middle-aged and older adults (age 45+) in 2011 and 2015. Cross-lagged path analysis was performed to examine the bidirectional relationships between blood lipids and sleep duration. Sleep duration and lipids data were analyzed as continuous variables. Temporal relationships between sleep duration and HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglycerides were different. Sleep duration was negatively associated with HDL-cholesterol 4 year later (β1 = −0.171, P = 0.005), and HDL-cholesterol was negatively associated with sleep duration 4 year later (β2 = −0.006, P = 0.002). Longer sleep duration was associated lower levels of LDL-cholesterol (β1 = −0.275, P = 0.097) and total cholesterol (β1 = −0.329, P = 0.096) 4 year later. There was a positive correlation between triglycerides and sleep duration. The path coefficient from triglycerides to sleep duration 4 year later (β2 = 0.001, P = 0.018) was greater than that from sleep duration to triglycerides 4 year later (β1 = 0.109, P = 0.847), with P = 0.030 for the difference between β1 and β2. In stratified analysis, we found that the strength and direction of the relationships may be related to age and BMI. Effects of sleep duration on blood lipids were only observed among participants aged 25.

Comparative studies of cultural-cognitive systems in China have stressed differences between northern and southern regions, with less attention paid to inter-regional commonality. This study proposes an implicit biculturalism model to rectify the diversity bias. The model posits that Chinese in both regions have internalized the same two cultural-cognitive systems but have organized them differently. For northerners, the individualist/analytical system (indicated by field-independence) is more dominant and chronically accessible than the collectivist/holistic system (indicated by field-dependence); for southerners the hierarchical order is reversed. The more dominant system would normally manifest in everyday life as the default situation, but the less dominant system could be activated through cultural priming. Both field-independent northerners (N = 46) and field-dependent southerners (N = 46) were assigned randomly into individualistic and collectivistic priming conditions and then tested with the Embedded Figure Test (EFT). The results indicated field-independent northern Chinese changed their EFT performance to be field-dependent under collectivism priming, and field-dependent southern Chinese changed their EFT performance in the field-independent direction, albeit to a less extent, under individualism priming. Generally, these results supported the implicit biculturalism model, which provides a more nuanced understanding of the question of “Who are the Chinese in Chinese psychology?”

Abstract Understanding the mechanisms of how urbanization influences the evolution of native species is vital for urban wildlife ecology and conservation in the Anthropocene. With thousands of years of agriculture‐dominated historical urbanization followed by 40 years of intensive and rapid urbanization, Shanghai provides an ideal environment to study how the two‐stage urbanization process influences the evolution of indigenous wildlife, especially of anuran species. Therefore, in this study, we used mitochondrial Cyt‐b gene, microsatellite (SSR), and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data to evaluate the demographic history and genetic structure of the eastern golden frog (Pelophylax plancyi), by sampling 407 individuals from 15 local populations across Shanghai, China. All local populations experienced bottlenecks during historical urbanization, while the local populations in urban areas maintained comparable contemporary effective population sizes (Ne) and genetic diversity with suburban and rural populations. Nevertheless, the rapid modern urbanization has already imposed significant negative effects to the integrity of populations. The 15 local populations were differentiated into eight genetic clusters, showing a spatial distribution pattern consistent with the current urbanization gradient and island–mainland geography. Although moderate gene flow still occurred from the rural peripheral cluster to urban and suburban clusters, population fragmentation was more serious in the urban and suburban populations, where higher urbanization levels within 2‐km radius areas showed significant negative relationships to the Ne and genetic diversity of local populations. Therefore, to protect urban wildlife with limited dispersal ability, improving conditions in fragmented habitat remnants might be most essential for local populations living in more urbanized areas. Meanwhile, we highlight the need to preserve large unfragmented rural habitats and to construct corridor networks to connect discrete urban habitat remnants for the long‐term wildlife conservation in intensively urbanizing environments.
