RationaleThe association between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) is complex, bidirectional, and may vary across groups. Understanding which cardiovascular risk factors vary in their relationship to OSA across population groups may improve knowledge of OSA-related CVD susceptibility.ObjectivesTo better understand the heterogeneity of associations, we assessed whether associations of OSA with cardiovascular risk factors vary by age, sex, and race/ethnicity.MethodsWe performed cross-sectional analyses of 1,344 Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis participants who underwent overnight full polysomnography, assays of fasting blood, and assessments of cardiovascular risk factors. Risk factors considered were blood pressure, glucose/lipid concentrations, white blood cell (WBC) total and subset counts, and cystatin C. The outcome was the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). Linear regression analyses with tests for interactions were conducted.ResultsThe sample had a mean age of 68 ± 9 years. Forty-seven percent of the sample was male, and 32% had moderate or severe OSA (AHI, ≥15). Multivariable adjusted analysis showed significant associations between higher AHI with lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and higher diastolic blood pressure and neutrophil counts. STUDY OBJECTIVES: To examine associations between 24-hour rest-activity patterns and body mass index (BMI) among community-dwelling US adults. Rest-activity patterns provide a field method to study exposures related to circadian rhythms. METHODS: Adults (N = 578) wore an actigraph on their nondominant wrist for 7 days. Intradaily variability and interdaily stability (IS), M10 (most active 10-hours), L5 (least active 5-hours), and relative amplitude (RA) were derived using nonparametric rhythm analysis. Mesor, acrophase, and amplitude were calculated from log-transformed count data using the parametric cosinor approach. RESULTS: Participants were 80% female and mean (standard deviation) age was 52 (15) years. Participants with higher BMI had lower values for magnitude, RA, IS, total sleep time (TST), and sleep efficiency. In multivariable analyses, less robust 24-hour rest-activity patterns as represented by lower RA were consistently associated with higher BMI: comparing the bottom quintile (least robust) to the top quintile (most robust 24-hour rest-activity pattern) of RA, BMI was 3-kg/m2 higher (p = .02). Associations were similar in magnitude to an hour less of TST (1-kg/m2 higher BMI) or a 10% decrease in sleep efficiency (2-kg/m2 higher BMI), and independent of age, sex, race, education, and the duration of rest and/or activity. CONCLUSIONS: Lower RA, reflecting both higher night activity and lower daytime activity, was associated with higher BMI. Independent of the duration of rest or activity during the day or night, 24-hour rest, and activity patterns from actigraphy provide aggregated measures of activity that associate with BMI in community-dwelling adults.

Rest-activity patterns provide an indication of circadian rhythmicity in the free-living setting. We aimed to describe the distributions of rest-activity patterns in a sample of adults and children across demographic variables. A sample of adults (N = 590) and children (N = 58) wore an actigraph on their nondominant wrist for 7 days and nights. We generated rest-activity patterns from cosinor analysis (MESOR, acrophase and magnitude) and nonparametric circadian rhythm analysis (IS: interdaily stability; IV: intradaily variability; L5: least active 5-hour period; M10: most active 10-hour period; and RA: relative amplitude). Demographic variables included age, sex, race, education, marital status, and income. Linear mixed-effects models were used to test for demographic differences in rest-activity patterns. Adolescents, compared to younger children, had (1) later M10 midpoints (β = 1.12 hours [95% CI: 0.43, 1.18] and lower M10 activity levels; (2) later L5 midpoints (β = 1.6 hours [95% CI: 0.9, 2.3]) and lower L5 activity levels; (3) less regular rest-activity patterns (lower IS and higher IV); and 4) lower magnitudes (β = -0.95 [95% CI: -1.28, -0.63]) and relative amplitudes (β = -0.1 [95% CI: -0.14, -0.06]). Mid-to-older adults, compared to younger adults (aged 18-29 years), had (1) earlier M10 midpoints (β = -1.0 hours [95% CI: -1.6, -0.4]; (2) earlier L5 midpoints (β = -0.7 hours [95% CI: -1.2, -0.2]); and (3) more regular rest-activity patterns (higher IS and lower IV). The magnitudes and relative amplitudes were similar across the adult age categories. Sex, race and education level rest-activity differences were also observed. Rest-activity patterns vary across the lifespan, and differ by race, sex and education. Understanding population variation in these patterns provides a foundation for further elucidating the health implications of rest-activity patterns across the lifespan.

Sleep duration is implicated in the etiologies of chronic diseases and premature mortality. However, the genetic basis for sleep duration is poorly defined. We sought to identify novel genetic components influencing sleep duration in a multi-ethnic sample. Meta-analyses were conducted of genetic associations with self-reported, habitual sleep duration from seven Candidate Gene Association Resource (CARe) cohorts of over 25 000 individuals of African, Asian, European and Hispanic American ancestry. All individuals were genotyped for ∼50 000 SNPs from 2000 candidate heart, lung, blood and sleep genes. African-Americans had additional genome-wide genotypes. Four cohorts provided replication. A SNP (rs17601612) in the dopamine D2 receptor gene (DRD2) was significantly associated with sleep duration (P = 9.8 × 10(-7)). Conditional analysis identified a second DRD2 signal with opposite effects on sleep duration. In exploratory analysis, suggestive association was observed for rs17601612 with polysomnographically determined sleep latency (P = 0.002). The lead DRD2 signal was recently identified in a schizophrenia GWAS, and a genetic risk score of 11 additional schizophrenia GWAS loci genotyped on the IBC array was also associated with longer sleep duration (P = 0.03). These findings support a role for DRD2 in influencing sleep duration. Our work motivates future pharmocogenetics research on alerting agents such as caffeine and modafinil that interact with the dopaminergic pathway and further investigation of genetic overlap between sleep and neuro-psychiatric traits.

To investigate how long non-coding RNAs DUXAP8 (LncRNA DUXAP8) influence the cell proliferation and invasion of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), we detected the expression levels of LncRNA DUXAP8 in lung cancer (LC) tissues, 4 LC-related cell lines (A549, SPC-A1, SK-MES-1 and NCI-H1299) and normal lung tissues via quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). Dredged clay with high water is difficult to use directly in practical engineering due to its extra-low strength. So, a solidifying treatment is often used to improve its engineering properties. In this study, a number of unconfined compression shear tests were conducted to investigate the strength behavior of cemented dredged clay with straw at different curing stages. For cemented dredged clay cured for a few days, the addition of filamentous straw and powdered straw would enhance its unconfined compressive strength (qu). Then, a decrease in qu is observed for samples with a small straw content as the curing time increases, mainly due to the deterioration of the straw. However, solidified soil amended by granular straw sees its qu decreases with increasing straw content decreasing its compactness and integrity. In addition, the failure strain (εf) varies mostly within the range of (1.0% and 4.0%) and basically decreases with the increasing curing time and straw content. For the cemented dredged clay used in this research, the straw less than 6 mm with a ratio of sample diameter-to-straw length greater than 6.7 is helpful for improving the early-stage strength behavior when the straw content is less than 8%. Objective To assess the clinical effectiveness of mild to moderate skeletal Class Ⅲ malocclusion cases by placing upper incisor brackets upside down with straight wire appliance. Methods Sixty⁃six patients with mild to moderate skeletal Class Ⅲ in the early permanent dentition were chosen and randomly allocated to two groups. Thirty three patients were treated with brackets bonded commonly (17 non⁃extraction and 16 extraction) and the other 33 pa⁃ tients were treated with brackets bonded upside down (18 non⁃extraction and 15 extraction). Lateral cephalometric radio⁃ graphs were taken and measured before and after treatment, and statistical analysis was performed. Results In non⁃ex⁃ traction cases, there were significant differences of the change with treatment of SNA(°), U1⁃SN(°) and U1⁃NA(°) be⁃ tween the experimental group and the control group (P＜0.05). In extraction cases, there were significant differences of the change with treatment of SNA(°), U1⁃SN(°), U1⁃NA(mm), U1⁃NA(°), L1⁃MP(°), L1⁃NB(mm), L1⁃NB(°) and U1⁃L1(°) between the experimental group and the control group (P＜0.05). Conclusion Bonding upper incisor brackets upside down could increase labial roots torque of upper incisors in skeletal Class Ⅲ malocclusion cases, which helped improve esthetic and function of the patients to some extent.

Recently,wearable devices acted as a kind of smart devices are changing people’s life style.When these devices are used in multi-user setting,ownership transfer should usually be considered.To resolve the security and privacy problems introduced in the ownership transfer process of wearable devices,a secure ownership transfer pro-tocol including initialization,mutual authentication and key change for wearable devices was introduced.The secu-rity analysis indicates that the proposed protocol can resist either normal channel attacks or special attacks appeared in the ownership transfer scenarios.The experiment results indicate that the proposed scheme is fairy efficient and is quite suitable for wearable devices.
