In recent years, progress has been made in generating new crystalline materials using generative machine learning models, though gaps remain in efficiently generating crystals based on target properties. This paper proposes the Con-CDVAE model, an extension of the Crystal Diffusion Variational Autoencoder (CDVAE), for conditional crystal generation. We introduce innovative components, design a two-step training method, and develop three unique generation strategies to enhance model performance. The effectiveness of Con-CDVAE is demonstrated through extensive testing under various conditions, including both single and combined property targets. Ablation studies further underscore the critical role of the new components in achieving our model's performance. Additionally, we validate the physical credibility of the generated crystals through Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, confirming Con-CDVAE's potential in material science research.

The polaron is the archetypal example of a quasiparticle emerging from the interaction between fermionic and bosonic fields in quantum field theory. In crystalline solids, polarons are formed when electrons and holes become dressed by the quanta of lattice vibrations. While experimental signatures of polarons in bulk three-dimensional materials abound, only rarely have polarons been observed in two-dimensional atomic crystals. Here, we shed light on this asymmetry by developing a quantitative ab initio theory of polarons in atomically-thin crystals. Using this conceptual framework, we unravel the real-space structure of the recently-observed hole polaron in hexagonal boron nitride, we discover an unexpected critical condition for the existence of polarons in two-dimensional crystals, and we establish the key materials descriptors and the universal laws that underpin polaron physics in two dimensions., Comment: 37 pages, 15 figures

EPW is an open-source software for $\textit{ab initio}$ calculations of electron-phonon interactions and related materials properties. The code combines density functional perturbation theory and maximally-localized Wannier functions to efficiently compute electron-phonon coupling matrix elements on ultra-fine Brillouin zone grids. This data is employed for predictive calculations of temperature-dependent properties and phonon-assisted quantum processes in bulk solids and low-dimensional materials. Here, we report on significant new developments in the code that occurred during the period 2016-2022, namely: a transport module for the calculation of charge carrier mobility and conductivity under electric and magnetic fields within the $\textit{ab initio}$ Boltzmann transport equation; a superconductivity module for the calculation of critical temperature and gap structure in phonon-mediated superconductors within the $\textit{ab initio}$ anisotropic multi-band Eliashberg theory; an optics module for calculations of phonon-assisted indirect transitions; a module for the calculation of small and large polarons without supercells using the $\textit{ab initio}$ polaron equations; and a module for calculating electron-phonon couplings, band structure renormalization, and temperature-dependent optical spectra using the special displacement method. For each capability, we outline the methodology and implementation, and provide example calculations. We describe recent code refactoring to prepare EPW for exascale architectures, we discuss efficient parallelization strategies, and report on extreme parallel scaling tests., Comment: 61 pages, 9 figures

We present a theoretical framework to describe polarons from first principles within a many-body Green's function formalism. Starting from a general electron-phonon Hamiltonian, we derive a self-consistent Dyson equation in which the phonon-mediated self-energy is composed by two distinct terms. One term is the Fan-Migdal self-energy and describes dynamic electron-phonon processes, the other term is a new contribution to the self-energy originating from the static displacements of the atomic nuclei in the polaronic ground state. The lowest-order approximation to the present theory yields the standard many-body perturbation theory approach to electron-phonon interactions in the limit of large polarons, and the ab initio polaron equations introduced in [Sio et al., Phys. Rev. B 99, 235139 (2019); Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 246403 (2019)] in the limit of small polarons. A practical recipe to implement the present unifying formalism in first-principles calculations is outlined. We apply our method to the Fr\"ohlich model, and obtain remarkably accurate polaron energies at all couplings, in line with Feynman's polaron theory and diagrammatic Monte Carlo calculations. We also recover the well-known results of Fr\"ohlich and Pekar at weak and strong coupling, respectively. The present approach enables predictive many-body calculations of polarons in real materials at all couplings.

Ab initio calculations of the phonon-induced band structure renormalization are currently based on the perturbative Allen-Heine theory and its many-body generalizations. These approaches are unsuitable to describe materials where electrons form localized polarons. Here, we develop a self-consistent, many-body Green's function theory of band structure renormalization that incorporates localization and self-trapping. We show that the present approach reduces to the Allen-Heine theory in the weak-coupling limit, and to total energy calculations of self-trapped polarons in the strong-coupling limit. To demonstrate this methodology, we reproduce the path-integral results of Feynman and diagrammatic Monte Carlo calculations for the Fr\"ohlich model at all couplings, and we calculate the zero point renormalization of the band gap of an ionic insulator including polaronic effects.

\textit{Ab initio} calculations of electron-phonon interactions including the polar Fr\"ohlich coupling have advanced considerably in recent years. The Fr\"ohlich electron-phonon matrix element is by now well understood in the case of bulk three-dimensional (3D) materials. In the case of two-dimensional (2D) materials, the standard procedure to include Fr\"ohlich coupling is to employ Coulomb truncation, so as to eliminate artificial interactions between periodic images of the 2D layer. While these techniques are well established, the transition of the Fr\"ohlich coupling from three to two dimensions has not been investigated. Furthermore, it remains unclear what error one makes when describing 2D systems using the standard bulk formalism in a periodic supercell geometry. Here, we generalize previous work on the \textit{ab initio} Fr\"ohlich electron-phonon matrix element in bulk materials by investigating the electrostatic potential of atomic dipoles in a periodic supercell consisting of a 2D material and a continuum dielectric slab. We obtain a unified expression for the matrix element, which reduces to the existing formulas for 3D and 2D systems when the interlayer separation tends to zero or infinity, respectively. This new expression enables an accurate description of the Fr\"ohlich matrix element in 2D systems without resorting to Coulomb truncation. We validate our approach by direct \textit{ab initio} density-functional perturbation theory calculations for monolayer BN and MoS$_2$, and we provide a simple expression for the 2D Fr\"ohlich matrix element that can be used in model Hamiltonian approaches. The discovery of graphene has spurred vigorous investigation of 2D materials, revealing a wide range of extraordinary properties and functionalities. 2D heterostructural materials have recently been fabricated by assembling isolated planes layer-by-layer in a desired sequence. Unusual properties and novel physical phenomena have been unveiled in such layered heterostructures. For example, Hofstadter's butterfly, an intriguing pattern of the energy states of Bloch electrons, was predicted several decades ago to be observable only under unfeasibly strong magnetic fields in conventional materials. But it has been observed recently under current experimental conditions in graphene/BN layered heterostructures, one of the outstanding new kinds of 2D materials. Moreover, another amazing physics phenomenon, Majorana fermions was predicted to exist in heterostructural systems consisting of a superconductor (SC) and a topological insulator (TI) Journal.

When reporting the results of clinical studies, some researchers may choose the five-number summary (including the sample median, the first and third quartiles, and the minimum and maximum values) rather than the sample mean and standard deviation, particularly for skewed data. For these studies, when included in a meta-analysis, it is often desired to convert the five-number summary back to the sample mean and standard deviation. For this purpose, several methods have been proposed in the recent literature and they are increasingly used nowadays. In this paper, we propose to further advance the literature by developing a smoothly weighted estimator for the sample standard deviation that fully utilizes the sample size information. For ease of implementation, we also derive an approximation formula for the optimal weight, as well as a shortcut formula for the sample standard deviation. Numerical results show that our new estimator provides a more accurate estimate for normal data and also performs favorably for non-normal data. Together with the optimal sample mean estimator in Luo et al., our new methods have dramatically improved the existing methods for data transformation, and they are capable to serve as "rules of thumb" in meta-analysis for studies reported with the five-number summary. We report a detailed study of tunneling spectra measured on 2H-Ta$_x$Nb$_{1-x}$Se$_2$ ($x=0\sim 0.1$) single crystals using a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope. The prominent gap-like feature unintelligible for a long time was found to be accompanied by some "in-gap" fine structures. By investigating the second-derivative spectra and their temperature and magnetic field dependencies, we were able to prove that inelastic electron tunneling is the origin of these features and obtain the Eliashberg function of 2H-Ta$_x$Nb$_{1-x}$Se$_2$ at atomic scale, providing a potential way to study the local Eliashberg function and phonon spectra of the related transition-metal dichalcogenides., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. In materials chiral fermions such as Weyl fermions are characterized by nonzero chiral charges, which are singular points of Berry curvature in momentum space. Recently, new types of chiral fermions beyond Weyl fermions have been discovered in structurally chiral crystals CoSi, RhSi and PtAl. Here, we have synthesized RhSn single crystals, which have opposite structural chirality to the CoSi crystals we previously studied. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we show that the bulk electronic structures of RhSn are consistent with the band calculations and observe evident surface Fermi arcs and helical surface bands, confirming the existence of chiral fermions in RhSn. It is noteworthy that the helical surface bands of the RhSn and CoSi crystals have opposite handedness, meaning that the chiral fermions are reversed in the crystals of opposite structural chirality. In magnetic topological insulators (TIs), the interplay between magnetic order and nontrivial topology can induce fascinating topological quantum phenomena, such as the quantum anomalous Hall effect, chiral Majorana fermions and axion electrodynamics. Recently, a great deal of attention has been focused on the intrinsic magnetic TIs, where disorder effects can be eliminated to a large extent, which is expected to facilitate the emergence of topological quantum phenomena. In despite of intensive efforts, experimental evidence of the topological surface states (SSs) remains elusive. Here, by combining first-principles calculations and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments, we have revealed that EuSn2As2 is an antiferromagnetic TI with observation of Dirac SSs consistent with our prediction. We also observe nearly gapless Dirac SSs in antiferromagnetic TIs MnBi2nTe3n+1 (n = 1 and 2), which were absent in previous ARPES results. These results provide clear evidence for nontrivial topology of these intrinsic magnetic TIs. Furthermore, we find that the topological SSs show no observable changes across the magnetic transition within the experimental resolution, indicating that the magnetic order has quite small effect on the topological SSs, which can be attributed to weak hybridization between the localized magnetic moments, from either 4f or 3d orbitals, and the topological electronic states. This provides insights for further research that the correlations between magnetism and topological states need to be strengthened to induce larger gaps in the topological SSs, which will facilitate the realization of topological quantum phenomena at higher temperatures., Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures, to be published in PRX

We develop a theoretical and computational framework to study polarons in semiconductors and insulators from first principles. Our approach provides the formation energy, excitation energy, and wavefunction of both electron and hole polarons, and takes into account the coupling of the electron or hole to all phonons. An important feature of the present method is that it does not require supercell calculations, and relies exclusively on electron band structures, phonon dispersions, and electron-phonon matrix elements obtained from calculations in the crystal unit cell. Starting from the Kohn-Sham (KS) equations of density-functional theory, we formulate the polaron problem as a variational minimization, and we obtain a nonlinear eigenvalue problem in the basis of KS states and phonon eigenmodes. In our formalism the electronic component of the polaron is expressed as a coherent superposition of KS states, in close analogy with the solution of the Bethe-Salpeter equation for the calculation of excitons. We demonstrate the power of the methodology by studying polarons in LiF and Li2O2. We show that our method describes both small and large polarons, and seamlessly captures Frohlich-type polar electron-phonon coupling and non-Frohlich coupling to acoustic and optical phonons. To analyze in quantitative terms the electron-phonon coupling mechanisms leading to the formation of polarons, we introduce spectral decompositions similar to the Eliashberg spectral function. We validate our theory using both analytical results and direct calculations on large supercells. We develop a formalism and a computational method to study polarons in insulators and semi-conductors from first principles. Unlike in standard calculations requiring large supercells, we solve a secular equation involving phonons and electron-phonon matrix elements from density-functional perturbation theory, in a spirit similar to the Bethe-Salpeter equation for excitons. We show that our approach describes seamlessly large and small polarons, and we illustrate its capability by calculating wavefunctions, formation energies, and spectral decomposition of polarons in LiF and Li2O2., Comment: 2 figures

We report the observation of local superconductivity induced at the point contact formed between a normal metal tip and WC -- a triple point topological semimetal with super hardness. Remarkably, the maximum critical temperature is up to near 12 K but insensitive to the tip's magnetism. The lateral dimensions of the superconducting puddles were evaluated and the temperature dependencies of superconducting gap and upper critical field were also obtained. These results put constraints on the explanation of the induced superconductivity and pave a pathway for exploring topological superconductivity., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

In some clinical studies, researchers may report the five number summary (including the sample median, the first and third quartiles, and the minimum and maximum values) rather than the sample mean and standard deviation. To conduct meta-analysis for pooling studies, one needs to first estimate the sample mean and standard deviation from the five number summary. A number of studies have been proposed in the recent literature to solve this problem. However, none of the existing estimators for the standard deviation is satisfactory for practical use. After a brief review of the existing literature, we point out that Wan et al.'s method (BMC Med Res Methodol 14:135, 2014) has a serious limitation in estimating the standard deviation from the five number summary. To improve it, we propose a smoothly weighted estimator by incorporating the sample size information and derive the optimal weight for the new estimator. For ease of implementation, we also provide an approximation formula of the optimal weight and a shortcut formula for estimating the standard deviation from the five number summary. The performance of the proposed estimator is evaluated through two simulation studies. In comparison with Wan et al.'s estimator, our new estimator provides a more accurate estimate for normal data and performs favorably for non-normal data. In real data analysis, our new method is also able to provide a more accurate estimate of the true sample standard deviation than the existing method. In this paper, we propose an optimal estimator of the standard deviation from the five number summary. Together with the optimal mean estimator in Luo et al.
