The National Park of Hainan Tropical Rainforest (NPHTR) plays the crucial role of an ecological barrier for Hainan Island. It also serves as a valuable repository of tropical biological heritage for the world. The scientific establishment of an ecological security pattern (ESP) for the NPHTR is therefore essential for ensuring the robustness and stability of this regional ecosystem, safeguarding tropical biodiversity, and promoting sustainable development. This study integrates ecosystem service functions (ESFs) and ecological sensitivity to identify ecological sources (ESs) so that regional integrity is promoted and ecological security is ensured. Ecological corridors (ECs) are established on the basis of a minimum cumulative resistance (MCR) model and circuit theory. We integrate ESs, nodes, and corridors to construct the ESP of the NPHTR. The areas of extreme importance and sensitivity in the NPHTR account for 25.17% and 25.47% of its overall area, respectively, and are predominantly situated in the higher elevations of its eastern and central regions. Further, the ESs are mainly distributed in its western region, specifically Ba Wangling (BWL), Jian Fengling (JFL), and Ying Geling (YGL), covering an area of 1624.67 km2 (38.06% of the total area) of the NPHTR. After correction, 47 ECs with a distance of 870.9 km have been established, with BWL and YGL serving as the core areas. The ecological pinch- and barrier points in the NPHTR cover areas of 11.49 km2 and 16.35 km2, respectively, primarily consisting of man-made landscapes such as farmlands and buildings. These areas are significantly disturbed by human activities. The NPHTR has an ESP of “one screen, one district, three belts, multiple points, and multiple corridors”. BWL and YGL, which contain numerous sources and corridors, are crucial ecological functional zones. To ensure the horizontal connectivity of rare wildlife, such as of Nomascus hainanus and Cervus eldii hainanus, the NPHTR should establish buffer or development zones. These findings offer valuable insights for the development and planning of ecological civilization on Hainan Island, as well as for the establishment and management of the ESP of other national parks and nature reserves.

Abstract Background Influenza vaccination is the key to prevent influenza-related disease, especially among high-risk populations. However, influenza vaccine uptake in China is low. This secondary analysis of a quasi-experimental trial aimed to understand factors associated with influenza vaccine uptake among children and older people stratified by funding context. Methods A total of 225 children (aged 0.5-8 years) and 225 older people (aged 60 years or above) were recruited from three clinics (rural, suburban and urban) in Guangdong Province. Participants were allocated into two groups based on funding contexts: a self-paid group (N = 150, 75 children and 75 older adults) in which participants paid full price for their vaccination; and a subsidized group (N = 300, 150 children and 150 older adults) in which varying levels of financial support was provided. Univariate and multivariable logistic regressions were conducted stratified by funding contexts. Results Overall, 75.0% (225/300) of participants in the subsidized group and 36.7% (55/150) in the self-paid group got vaccinated. Older adults had lower vaccination rates than children in both funding groups, while both age groups showed much higher uptake in the subsidized group than in the self-paid group (aOR = 5.96, 95% CI: 3.77–9.42, p = 0.001). In the self-paid group, having prior influenza vaccination history of children (aOR:2.61, 95%CI: 1.06–6.42) or older people (aOR:4.76, 95%CI: 1.08–20.90) was associated with increased influenza vaccine uptake compared to those who had no prior vaccination experiences in the family. While in the subsidized group, participants who got married or lived with partners (aOR = 0.32, 0.10–0.98) had lower vaccination uptake than single ones. Trust in providers’ advice (aOR = 4.95, 95%CI:1.99, 12.43), perceived effectiveness of the vaccine (aOR: 12.18, 95%CI: 5.21–28.50), and experienced influenza-like illnesses in the family in the past year (aOR = 46.52, 4.10, 533.78) were associated with higher vaccine uptake. Conclusions Older people had suboptimal vaccine uptake compared to children in both contexts and need more attention to enhance influenza vaccination. Tailoring interventions to different vaccine funding contexts may help improve influenza vaccination: In self-paid context, motivating people to accept their first ever influenza vaccination may be a promising strategy. In subsidized context, improving public confidence in vaccine effectiveness and providers’ advice would be useful.

Cupressus gigantea is an endangered species mainly distributed on beach land, down-slope, and middle-slope positions along the Yarlung Zangbo River on the Tibet Plateau of China, with an altitude ranging from 3000 to 3400 m. We investigated the rhizosphere and fine root microbiomes of C. gigantea at these three slope positions through metagenomic analysis. Slope positions had a greater influence on microbiome composition in the rhizosphere than that in the fine roots. Down- and middle-slope positions presented higher microbial richness indeces and community similarity, while a more complex co-occurrence network was observed in the beach land samples. Rhizosphere bacterial community assembly was determined via deterministic processes in the beach land and via stochastic processes in the down- and middle-slope positions. Archaeal and fungal community assemblies were both dominated by stochastic processes in the rhizosphere and fine roots at the three slope positions. Nitrogen (N) functional genes were more sensitive to changes in slope positions than phosphorus (N) functional genes. Soil properties explained more than 60% and 34% of the variations in the N and P functional genes and more than 30% and 10% of the variations in the microbiomes in the rhizosphere and fine roots, respectively. Variation in the microbiome was significantly driven by total nirtogen, total potassium, pH, and soil moisture in rhizosphere, and by pH and soil moisture in fine roots. Our observations suggest that the effect of slope position on the microbiomes of C. gigantea was greater for the rhizosphere than the fine roots, with down- and middle-slope positions presenting higher community similarity.

Abstract Background Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination could prevent cervical and other HPV-associated cancers attributable to vaccine-associated HPV types. However, HPV vaccination coverage among women aged 9–18 years old is low in China. Common barriers include poor financial affordability, minimal public engagement, and low confidence in domestically produced HPV vaccines. Pay-it-forward offers an individual a free or subsidized service then an opportunity to voluntarily donate and/or create a postcard message to support future people. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of pay-it-forward as compared to standard-of-care self-paid vaccination to improve HPV vaccine uptake among adolescent girls aged 15–18 years, who are left out in the current pilot free HPV vaccination task force in some parts of China. Methods This is a two-arm randomized controlled trial in Chengdu, China. Eligible adolescent girls (via caregivers) will be randomly selected and recruited through four community health centers (one in the most developed urban areas, one in higher middle-income and one in lower middle-income suburban areas, and one in the least developed rural areas) using the resident registration list. A total of 320 participants will be randomized into two study arms (user-paid versus pay-it-forward vaccination) in a 1:1 ratio. The intervention assignment will be blinded to recruiters and participants using envelop concealment until the research assistants open the envelop to determine which treatment to deliver to each individual. The primary outcome of the study will be HPV vaccine uptake by administrative data. Secondary outcomes include costs, vaccine hesitancy, and the completion rates of the 3-dose HPV vaccination series. Discussion This study will investigate an innovative pay-it-forward strategy’s effectiveness and economic costs to improve HPV vaccination among 15–18-year-old adolescent girls. Study findings will have implications for increasing HPV vaccine uptake in places where HPV vaccines are provided for a fee. IntroductionThe plain marsh wetland ecosystems are sensitive to changes in the natural environment and the intensity of human activities. The Sanjiang Plain is China’s largest area of concentrated marsh wetland, the Small Sanjiang Plain is the most important component of the Sanjiang Plain. However, with the acceleration of the urbanization and development of large-scale agricultural reclamation activities in the Small Sanjiang Plain in Northeast China, the wetland has been seriously damaged. In light of this degradation this study examines the Small Sanjiang Plain.MethodsFrom the four aspects of area, structure, function, and human activities, we try to construct a wetland degradation comprehensive index (WDCI) in cold region with expert scoring methods and analytic hierarchy process (AHP), coupled with network and administrative unit. The objective was to reveal the degradation of wetlands in Northeast China over three decades at a regional scale.ResultsThe results showed that (1) the overall wetland area decreased between 1990 and 2020 by 39.26×103 hm2. Within this period a significant decrease of 336.56×103 hm2 occurred between 1990 and 200 and a significant increase of 214.62×103 hm2 occurred between 2010 and 2020. (2) In terms of structural changes, the fractal dimension (FRAC) has the same trend as the Landscape Fragmentation Index (LFI) with little change. (3) In terms of functional changes, the average above-ground biomass (AGB) increased from 1029.73 kg/hm2 to 1405.38 kg/hm2 between 1990 and 2020 in the study area. (4) In terms of human activities, the average human disturbance was 0.52, 0.46, 0.57 and 0.53 in 1990, 2000, 2010 and 2020, with the highest in 2010. (5) The composite wetland degradation index shows that the most severe wetland degradation was 49.61% in 2010 occurred between 1990 and 2020. (6) Among the severely deteriorated trajectory types in 2010–2020, mild degradation → serious degradation accounted for the largest area of 240.23×103 hm2, and the significant improvement trajectory type in 1990–2000 accounted for the largest area of 238.50×103 hm2.DiscussionIn brief, we conclude that the degradation of the Small Sanjiang Plain wetland was caused mainly by construction, overgrazing, deforestation, and farmland reclamation. This study can also provide new views for monitoring and managing wetland degradation by remote sensing in cold regions.

This study mainly aims to detect the county-level spatio-temporal variability of LULCC (Land Use and Land Cover Change) spatial patterns in Southwest China. Multi-temporal Remote Sensing (RS) images (Landsat TM/OLI in 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015) were applied to extract land use/cover types at each of the four-time nodes using the Support Vector Machine (SVM) method. Then, the trajectory map methodology was adopted to identify the spatio-temporal distribution characteristics of LULCC patterns throughout the given time series. According to the results, the area of unused land decreased continuously, 0.094% total. An evident decline of grassland by 2.17% was documented, and a notable increase was observed in forestland by 63.94 km2 during the period from 2000 to 2015. Water bodies, built-up land, and unused land showed no significant change throughout the study period. The conversion from grassland to forestland and vice-versa (code 13 or 31) was prominent due to an adjustment made to local forestry policy during the first two periods (2000-2005 and 2005-2010), accounting for 17.55% and 17.56% of the study region, respectively. The anaphase trajectory transition type occupied the smallest area of all the trajectory maps. By contrast, the repetitive trajectory was the leading land-use transition type and covered the largest area. Trajectory analysis provides an effective approach for detecting the spatio-temporal changes in LULCC patterns.

This study aims to evaluate the effects of the spatiotemporal patterns of land-use and land-cover (LULC) changes on the dynamics of carbon storage in a tropical region of China by linking the trajectory analysis of LULC changes and the InVEST model. Based on remote sensing (RS), geographic information system (GIS) and change trajectories, the spatiotemporal evolution of LULC changes was explored. This evolution could be coupled with the spatiotemporal LULC change trajectories and the InVEST model for the quantitative study of the spatial distribution and temporal variation in regional carbon stocks. The results showed that during the 2000–2020 period, the built-up land continually increased to 206.05 km2 through urban expansion, and forestland became the dominant type of land, with an area of 357.39 km2. In addition to the change in land use, the carbon storage in the study region increased by 4.87 Tg C. The anaphasic trajectory had the largest area ratio at 7.05% in the total area, while the prophasic trajectory contributed to the largest increase in carbon storage, 5.87 Tg C. Moreover, the repetitive trajectories had no impact on carbon sinks and sources, whereas the anaphasic trajectory and the continual trajectory imposed passive impacts on carbon storage. These advances in research underpin scientific efforts to improve the understanding of the relationship between the optimization of land-use structure and patterns and the carbon storage service in the Nandu River Basin.

Global primates are endangered, and thus it is important to know the determinants of primate population dynamics. It is widely reported that food plant diversity and nutrients are key determinants of many primate population dynamics. However, it remains unknown whether this can be applied to explain the population dynamics of Hainan gibbon (Nomascus hainanus), the world’s rarest primate. Recently, two individuals moved out from one family group (group C) and went across more than 9 km to form a new family group (group E), thus providing a perfect chance to quantify whether food plant diversity and nutrients can determine Hainan gibbon’s formation of the new family group. Here, we used a plot survey to compare the differences in food plant diversity (species richness and abundance) and nine leaf nutrient traits (leaf water content, total soluble sugar, vitamin C, calorific value, crude fat, crude protein, crude fiber, Zn, and Fe) between group C and group E. We found that plant diversity in group E was indeed higher (1.35–1.41 times) than that in group C. Moreover, in both groups C and E, food plant diversity within the home range was also higher (1.4–1.6 times) than that out of the home range. However, both cases could not be witnessed for all leaf nutrient traits. Results of principal component analysis revealed that food plant species between groups C and E were all significantly separated by food plant diversity but not leaf nutrient traits. Food plant species within and out of the home range of both groups C and E could also be significantly separated by food plant diversity, but not for all leaf nutrient traits. In conclusion, food plant diversity was one key determinant of the formation of a new family group of Hainan gibbons. Choosing high food plant diversity was also one key motivation for Hainan gibbons to select their home range.

Structural analysis and construction control of staged-construction processes are major subjects in the context of modern long-span bridges. Although the forward and backward analysis methods are able to simulate situations, their main disadvantage is that they usually apply the stage superposition principle. In the actual construction process, due to changes made to the plan, the construction process needs to be adjusted at any time, and it is difficult to implement the construction process in complete accordance with the established plan. As a result, the existing simulation method based on the incremental structural analysis of each construction stage has poor adaptability to such adjustments. In this study, considering the strong geometric nonlinear behavior of the long-span cable-stayed bridge construction process, the geometrically nonlinear mechanical equations of the staged-construction bar system structure were derived. The minimum potential energy theorem was used by introducing the concept of the stress-free-state variable of the structural elements. The equation reflects the influence of the change in the stress-free-state variables of structural elements on the completion state of the structure. From the analysis of the geometrical condition that the equilibrium equation holds, the stress-free installation condition of the closing section of the planar beam element structure was obtained. A new simulation method for long-span cable-stayed bridge construction has been proposed, which is called the stress-free-state forward analysis. This method can directly obtain the intermediate process state of cable-stayed bridge construction without performing stage-by-stage demolition calculations, and causing the internal force and deformation of the completion state to reach the design target state. This method can realize the simulation of multi-process parallel operation in construction, and solves the problem of automatic filtering of temporary loads. To illustrate the application of the method, a long-span cable-stayed bridge was analyzed.

BackgroundMaturity-onset diabetes of the young 5 (MODY5), a rare diabetes syndrome of young adults, is associated with variants in hepatocyte nuclear factor 1B (HNF1B) gene.Case PresentationWe reported a case of MODY5, which presented with diabetic ketosis, multiple renal cysts, and hypokalemia. In this case, the HNF1B score was estimated as 13 and a heterozygous variant of HNF1B in exon 4 (c.826C>T, p.Arg276*) was identified through Sanger sequencing.ConclusionsMultiple renal cysts and youth-onset diabetes are common manifestations in patients with HNF1B mutations, and insufficient insulin secretion may be a potential cause of diabetic ketosis in MODY5.

ABSTRACT Wheat stripe rust, caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst), is a crucial disease for wheat worldwide and constantly threatens wheat production in southwestern and northwestern China, where the environment is a good fit for Pst oversummering and overwintering. However, the underlying genetic dynamics of spring epidemic Pst populations across large areas of continuous planting in the southwestern and northwestern regions are poorly understood. A total of 2,103 Pst isolates were sampled in the spring of 2019 from the two agroecosystems and grouped into three horizontal spatial scales (countywide, provincial, and regional subpopulations) and two vertical spatial scales that consisted of elevational and geomorphic subpopulations. A total of 776 multilocus genotypes were identified, with the highest genetic diversity found in the northern and Sichuan populations, particularly in the Ningxia and Sichuan Basins, while the lowest genetic diversity was found in the Yunnan and Guizhou populations. Multivariate discriminant analysis of principal components (DAPC) and STRUCTURE (STRUCTURE 2.3.4) analyses revealed variation in the genotypic compositions of the molecular groups on horizontal and vertical dimensions from north to south or vice versa and from low to high or vice versa, respectively. The regional neighbor-joining tree revealed three large spatial structures consisting of the southwestern, the northwestern, and the Xinjiang regions, while the Tibetan population connected the southwestern and northwestern regions. The isolates of the Sichuan Basin were scattered over the four quartiles by principal coordinate analysis, which indicated frequent genotype interchange with others. Greater genetic differentiation was observed between the southwestern and northwestern regions. Linkage equilibrium (P ≥ 0.05) was detected on different spatial scales, suggesting that Pst populations are using sexual reproduction or mixed reproduction (sexual and clonal reproduction) in southwestern and northwestern China. IMPORTANCE Understanding the epidemiology and population genetics of plant pathogens is crucial to formulate efficient predictions of disease outbreaks and achieve sustainable integrated disease management, especially for pathogens with migratory capability. Here, this study covers the genetic homogeneity and heterogeneity of different geographical Pst populations on broad to fine spatial scales from the key epidemic regions of the two agroecosystems in China, where wheat stripe rust occurs annually. We provide knowledge of the population genetics of Pst and reveal that, for instance, there is greater genetic diversity in northwestern China, there are close genetic relationships between Yunnan and Guizhou and between Gansu-Ningxia and Qinghai, and there are effects of altitude on genetic compositions, etc. All of these findings clarify the genetic relationships and expand the insights into the population dynamics and evolutionary mechanisms of Pst in southwestern and northwestern China, providing a theoretical basis for achieving sustainable control of wheat stripe rust in key epidemic regions.

Due to habitat loss and hunting, the Hainan gibbon (Nomascus hainanus), the world’s rarest primate, was reduced to only two social groups and seven known individuals in 1978. Following the establishment of Bawangling National Natural Reserve (BNNR), gibbon forest habitat increased within this landscape from 56 km2 in 1980 to 300 km2, and the species had increased to five groups and 35 individuals by 2021. It is important to assess whether the large increase in habitat area was responsible for gibbon population increase, or whether gibbon recovery was associated with other factors. Here we use a 21-year longitudinal dataset of Hainan gibbon population change and habitat change, combined with vegetation survey plot data for 2021, to establish an accurate distribution baseline for natural tropical broadleaf forest across the BNNR landscape from 400 to 1300 m (the elevational range of gibbons at BNNR) and within the home range for each of the five Hainan gibbon social groups. We then utilized Landsat time-series images and analysis to compute non-linear causal relationships between forest dynamics and gibbon population growth from 2000 to 2021, both across BNNR and within each gibbon group home range. Metrics of forest dynamics include change in total forest area and forest fragmentation, and metrics of gibbon population dynamics include variation in total number of individuals for the entire population and within each social group, and variation in total number of groups. Our results demonstrate that overall gibbon population growth shows a positive relationship with improved habitat quality, with a one-year time lag of population response. However, changes in numbers of individuals within social groups do not show a similar relationship with improving habitat quality, suggesting that increasing forest cover and connectivity within the BNNR landscape are not direct determinants of Hainan gibbon recovery and that other environmental and/or anthropogenic factors are likely to be involved.

Surface water is the most important and common water resource on earth. Accurate and effective mapping and detecting of surface water have been made possible by remote sensing technology, highresolution satellite data, playing an important role in surface water monitoring and mapping, which has become the current hot research for water information extraction in recent decades. Therefore, in this paper, we tested and analysed four models to extract water bodies using China’s GF-2 HD satellite (GF- 2) image, including Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), Modified Shadow Water Index (MSWI), Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Object-Oriented Method (OOM). The results showed applying water extraction models can map surface water with an overall accuracy of 0.8935, 0.9256, 0.9467 and 0.9357, respectively. SVM owns the highest overall accuracy value of 0.9467, followed by OOM. SVM performed significantly better at surface water extraction with kappa coefficients improved by 9.00%, 5.00%, and 2.00%, respectively, which yielded the best results and used to map surfaces water bodies in the study region, while index methods (NDWI and MSWI) are mostly classified into the water and non-water information based on a threshold value, with higher total omission and commission errors at 12.45%, 25.64%, 6.38% and12.87%, respectively. Therefore, we proposed SVM as the best algorithm to identify water body and effectively detect surface water from the GF-2 image.

BackgroundAspartate transaminase/alanine transaminase (De Ritis) ratio is a good predictor of liver function damage, but its prognostic value in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) undergoing hepatectomy remains unclear. This study aimed to assess the association of the De Ritis ratio with overall survival (OS) among hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related HCC patients undergoing hepatectomy.MethodsA total of 1,147 HCC patients were recruited. Cox regression analysis was used to identify the independent risk factors. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) was used to evaluate the association between the De Ritis ratio and mortality risk. Nomogram was constructed to determine the predictive power of the De Ritis ratio.ResultsMultivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that the tertile of the De Ritis ratio was an independent risk factor for mortality. After adjustment for confounding factors, the adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) with corresponding 95% CIs of mortality for the 2nd tertile and 3rd tertile were 1.175 (0.889–1.554) and 1.567 (1.199–2.046), respectively. RCS confirmed a non-linear association between the natural logarithm of the De Ritis ratio and the risk of mortality (p for non-linearity = 0.0375). The nomogram showed that the natural logarithm of the De Ritis ratio contributed the most to the prediction of prognosis in HBV-related HCC patients, and Harrell’s C-index was 0.680 with a 95% CI of 0.645–0.715.ConclusionThe De Ritis ratio is an independent predictor for OS in HBV-related HCC patients undergoing hepatectomy, which allows for prognostic stratification of patients, hence, individualized treatment and follow-up.

Pamiparib, an investigational Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitor in clinical development, demonstrates excellent selectivity for both PARP1 and PARP2, and superb anti-proliferation activities in tumor cell lines with BRCA1/2 mutations or HR pathway deficiency (HRD). Pamiparib has good bioavailability and is 16-fold more potent than olaparib in an efficacy study using BRCA1 mutated MDA-MB-436 breast cancer xenograft model. Pamiparib also shows strong anti-tumor synergy with temozolomide (TMZ), a DNA alkylating agent used to treat brain tumors. Compared to other PARP inhibitors, pamiparib demonstrated improved penetration across the blood brain barrier (BBB) in mice. Oral administration of pamiparib at a dose as low as 3 mg/kg is sufficient to abrogate PARylation in brain tumor tissues. In SCLC-derived, TMZ-resistant H209 intracranial xenograft model, combination of pamiparib with TMZ overcomes its resistance and shows significant tumor inhibitory effects and prolonged life span. Our data suggests that combination of pamiparib with TMZ has unique potential for treatment of brain tumors. Currently, the combination therapy of pamiparib with TMZ is evaluated in clinical trial [NCT03150862].

The mutation of K‐RAS represents one of the most frequent genetic alterations in cancer. Targeting of downstream effectors of RAS, including of MEK and ERK, has limited clinical success in cancer patients with K‐RAS mutations. The reduced sensitivity of K‐RAS‐mutated cells to certain MEK inhibitors (MEKi) is associated with the feedback phosphorylation of MEK by C‐RAF and with the reactivation of mitogen‐activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling. Here, we report that the RAF dimer inhibitors lifirafenib (BGB‐283) and compound C show a strong synergistic effect with MEKi, including mirdametinib (PD‐0325901) and selumetinib, in suppressing the proliferation of K‐RAS‐mutated non‐small‐cell lung cancer and colorectal cancer (CRC) cell lines. This synergistic effect was not observed with the B‐RAFV600E selective inhibitor vemurafenib. Our mechanistic analysis revealed that RAF dimer inhibition suppresses RAF‐dependent MEK reactivation and leads to the sustained inhibition of MAPK signaling in K‐RAS‐mutated cells. This synergistic effect was also observed in several K‐RAS mutant mouse xenograft models. A pharmacodynamic analysis supported a role for the synergistic phospho‐ERK blockade in enhancing the antitumor activity observed in the K‐RAS mutant models. These findings support a vertical inhibition strategy in which RAF dimer and MEKi are combined to target K‐RAS‐mutated cancers, and have led to a Phase 1b/2 combination therapy study of lifirafenib and mirdametinib in solid tumor patients with K‐RAS mutations and other MAPK pathway aberrations.

A novel convolutional neural network namely the modified CNN-GAP model is proposed for fast fault diagnosis of the DC-DC inverter. This method improves the model structure of the traditional CNN by using a global average pooling layer to replace the fully connected layer of 2~3 layers. The improved CNN-GAP method mainly contains an input layer, a feature extraction layer, a global average pooling (GAP) layer, and a Softmax output layer. Firstly, the raw 1-D time-series data directly input into the input layer of the established CNN-GAP diagnosis model. The 2-D feature maps are reconstructed in the input layer. Secondly, the representative features are automatically extracted from the 2-D feature maps by using multiple convolutional layers and pooling layers. Thirdly, the dimension transformation and size compression of the output image of the feature extraction layer is completed by the GAP layer. Finally, the fault diagnosis result of the DC-DC inverter is automatically output in the Softmax output layer. The proposed method is used for diagnosing the open-circuit fault of the IGBT in the isolated DC-DC inverter. The proposed method is more accurate and effective than other mainstream intelligent diagnosis methods including the SVM, KNN, DNN, and traditional CNN. The experiment results show that the diagnostic accuracy is up to 99.95%, and the testing time can reduce by more than 15%. The improved CNN-GAP method could greatly reduce the model parameter quantity of the traditional CNN more than 80%, which is more suitable for rapid fault diagnosis in electronic devices.

Tomato powdery mildew, caused by Oidium neolycopersici, is a destructive fungal disease that damages almost all of the aerial parts of tomato, causing devastating losses in tomato production worldwide. WRKY transcription factors are key regulators of plant immunity, but the roles of ShWRKYs in wild tomato Solanum habrochaites LA1777 against O. neolycopersici still remain to be uncovered. Here, we show that ShWRKY81 is an important WRKY transcription factor from wild tomato Solanum habrochaites LA1777, contributing to plant resistance against O. neolycopersici. ShWRKY81 was isolated and identified to positively modulate tomato resistance against On-Lz. The transient overexpression of the ShWRKY81-GFP (green fluorescent protein) fusion protein in Nicotiana benthamiana cells revealed that ShWRKY81 was localized in the nucleus. ShWRKY81 responded differentially to abiotic and biotic stimuli, with ShWRKY81 mRNA accumulation in LA1777 seedlings upon On-Lz infection. The virus-induced gene silencing of ShWRKY81 led to host susceptibility to On-Lz in LA1777, and a loss of H2O2 formation and hypersensitive response (HR) induction. Furthermore, the transcripts of ShWRKY81 were induced by salicylic acid (SA), and ShWRKY81-silenced LA1777 seedlings displayed decreased levels of the defense hormone SA and SA-dependent PRs gene expression upon On-Lz infection. Together, these results demonstrate that ShWRKY81 acts as a positive player in tomato powdery mildew resistance.

Summary: To evaluate the achievements of China's immunization program between 1950 and 2018, we chose 11 vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) as representative notifiable diseases and used annual surveillance data obtained between 1950 and 2018 to derive disease incidence and mortality trends. Quasi-Poisson and polynomial regression models were used to estimate the impacts of specific vaccine programs, and life-table methods were used to calculate the loss of life expectancy, years of life lost, and loss of working years. The total notification number for the 11 VPDs was 211,866,000 from 1950 to 2018. The greatest number occurred in 1959, with a total incidence of 1,723 per million persons. From 1978 to 2018, a substantial decline was observed in the incidence of major infectious diseases. The incidence of pertussis fell 98% from 126.35 to 1.58 per million, and the incidences of measles, meningococcal meningitis, and Japanese encephalitis fell 99%, 99%, and 98%, respectively. The regression models showed that most of the 11 diseases exhibited dramatic declines in morbidity after their integration into the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI), while varicella and paratyphoid fever, which were not integrated into the EPI, showed increased morbidity. From 1978 to 2018, the total life expectancy for the 11 VPDs increased by 0.79 years, and similar results were obtained for different age groups. China has had great success in controlling VPDs in recent decades, and improving vaccination coverage is a key aspect of controlling VPDs in China. Summary: Background: The Chinese government implemented a metropolitan-wide quarantine of Wuhan city on 23rd January 2020 to curb the epidemic of the coronavirus COVID-19. Lifting of this quarantine is imminent. We modelled the effects of two key health interventions on the epidemic when the quarantine is lifted. Methods: We constructed a compartmental dynamic model to forecast the trend of the COVID-19 epidemic at different quarantine lifting dates and investigated the impact of different rates of public contact and facial mask usage on the epidemic. Results: We projected a declining trend of the COVID-19 epidemic if the current quarantine strategy continues, and Wuhan would record the last new confirmed cases in late April 2020. At the end of the epidemic, 65,733 (45,722-99,015) individuals would be infected by the virus, among which 16,166 (11,238-24,603, 24.6%) were through public contacts, 45,996 (31,892-69,565, 69.7%) through household contact, and 3,571 (2,521-5,879, 5.5%) through hospital contacts (including 778 (553-1,154) non-COVID-19 patients and 2,786 (1,969-4,791) medical staff). A total of 2,821 (1,634-6,361) would die of COVID-19 related pneumonia in Wuhan. Early quarantine lifting on 21st March is viable only if Wuhan residents sustain a high facial mask usage of ≥85% and a pre-quarantine level public contact rate. Delaying city resumption to mid/late April would relax the requirement of facial mask usage to ≥75% at the same contact rate. Conclusions: The prevention of a second epidemic is viable after the metropolitan-wide quarantine is lifted but requires a sustaining high facial mask usage and a low public contact rate.

Soil erosion by water is a major cause of land degradation. Agricultural practices and many other ecological environmental problems contribute to land degradation worldwide, especially in arid and semi-arid areas. Miyun County, which is located in a mountainous region of North China, is an important natural ecological zone and surface source of drinking water for Beijing and is very vulnerable to soil erosion due to its thin soil layer and human activities. Landsat images from 2003 and 2013 were used to analyze the land-use and land-cover change (LULCC) over this period. The revised universal soil loss equation (RUSLE) model integrated with Geographic Information System (GIS) was used to quantify soil loss and to map erosion risk. In addition, the response of soil erosion to LULCC was evaluated. The results showed that the areas under cropland, forest, and water bodies increased over the study period by 66.03, 243.44, and 9.01 km2, respectively. The increase in forested land indicated that the improved ground vegetation cover was due to the implementation of active ecological measures. Between 2003 and 2013, light soil erosion increased by 587.46 km2, and extremely severe soil erosion increased by 9.57 km2. The extents of slight, moderate, severe, and very severe soil erosion, however, decreased by 8.02, 445.21, 142.69, and 1.11 km2, respectively. A total of 57.5% of land with moderate soil erosion has been converted to light soil erosion, which could be highly beneficial for the improvement of vegetation control of soil and water losses. In terms of area, forestland exhibited the greatest increase, while moderate soil erosion exhibited the greatest decrease over the study period. Land-use change led to an alteration in the intensity of soil erosion due to changes or loss of vegetation. The conversion from high intensity soil erosion to low intensity was attributed to the implementation of ecological environmental protection. The results generated from this study may be useful for planners and land-use managers to make appropriate decisions for soil conservation.

Turnip, one of the oldest groups of cultivated Brassica rapa species, is a traditional crop as well as a form of animal fodder, a vegetable, and a herbal medicine that is widely cultivated in farming and farming-pastoral regions in Tibet. Different regions of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP) are home to a rich diversity of turnip owing to their high altitudes and variable climate types. However, information on the morphology and genetic diversity of Tibetan turnip remains limited. Therefore, the genetic diversity of 171 turnip varieties from China and elsewhere (Japan, Korea, and Europe) was analyzed using 58 morphological characteristics and 31 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers in this study. The varieties showed that the genetic distance ranged from 0.12 to 1.00, and the genetic similarity coefficient ranged between 0.73 and 0.95. Cluster tree showed two distinct clusters. Both morphotype and geography contributed to the group classification. A combination of morphological traits and molecular markers could refine the precision of accurate identification compared to the separate morphological and molecular data analyses. The sampling ratio of 15% to utmost precisely represent the initial population was compared to ratios of 10% and 20%, and the sampling ratio of 15% is recommended for future works when a primary core collection of turnip resources is constructed. These results could furnish a foundation for germplasm conservation and effective turnip breeding in future studies.

The largest area of tropical rainforests in China is on Hainan Island, and it is an important part of the world’s tropical rainforests. The structure of the tropical rainforests in Hainan is complex, the biomass density is high, and conducting ground surveys is difficult, costly, and time-consuming. Remote sensing is a good monitoring method for biomass estimation. However, the saturation phenomenon of such data from different satellite sensors results in low forest biomass estimation accuracy in tropical rainforests with high biomass density. Based on environmental information, the biomass of permanent sample plots, and forest age, this study established a tropical rainforest database for Hainan. Forest age and 14 types of environmental information, combined with an enhanced vegetation index (EVI), were introduced to establish a tropical rainforest biomass estimation model for remote sensing that can overcome the saturation phenomenon present when using remote sensing data. The fitting determination coefficient R2 of the model was 0.694. The remote sensing estimate of relative bias was 2.29%, and the relative root mean square error was 35.41%. The tropical rainforest biomass in Hainan Island is mainly distributed in the central mountainous and southern areas. The tropical rainforests in the northern and coastal areas have been severely damaged by tourism and real estate development. Particularly in low-altitude areas, large areas of tropical rainforest have been replaced by economic forests. Furthermore, the tropical rainforest areas in some cities and counties have decreased, affecting the increase in tropical rainforest biomass. On Hainan Island, there were few tropical rainforests in areas with high rainfall. Therefore, afforestation in these areas could maximize the ecological benefits of tropical rainforests. To further strengthen the protection, there is an urgent need to establish a feasible, reliable, and effective tropical rainforest loss assessment system using quantitative scientific methodologies.

Intelligent fault diagnosis methods based on deep learning becomes a research hotspot in the fault diagnosis field. Automatically and accurately identifying the incipient micro-fault of rotating machinery, especially for fault orientations and severity degree, is still a major challenge in the field of intelligent fault diagnosis. The traditional fault diagnosis methods rely on the manual feature extraction of engineers with prior knowledge. To effectively identify an incipient fault in rotating machinery, this paper proposes a novel method, namely improved the convolutional neural network-support vector machine (CNN-SVM) method. This method improves the traditional convolutional neural network (CNN) model structure by introducing the global average pooling technology and SVM. Firstly, the temporal and spatial multichannel raw data from multiple sensors is directly input into the improved CNN-Softmax model for the training of the CNN model. Secondly, the improved CNN are used for extracting representative features from the raw fault data. Finally, the extracted sparse representative feature vectors are input into SVM for fault classification. The proposed method is applied to the diagnosis multichannel vibration signal monitoring data of a rolling bearing. The results confirm that the proposed method is more effective than other existing intelligence diagnosis methods including SVM, K-nearest neighbor, back-propagation neural network, deep BP neural network, and traditional CNN.
