Abstract Background Unit nurse managers hold essential positions that can facilitate implementation of evidence-based practice. Studies showed that nurse managers in China lacked competencies and behaviours necessary to lead evidence-based practice implementation. The aim of the current study was to develop a context-fit training program prototype to enhance leadership competencies and behaviours regarding evidence-based practice implementation of Chinese unit nurse managers. Method We used a descriptive qualitative study design and followed the integrated knowledge translation approach to co-develop the prototype in a tertiary hospital in Changsha, China. Seven nurse managers from the participated hospital and a researcher co-developed the prototype based on the Ottawa Model of Implementation Leadership (O-MILe). The development process encompassed four phases from November 2021 to March 2022 that involved group discussions (n = 4) and individual interviews (n = 21). All data were analysed by two independent researchers using the thematic analysis method. Results Managers agreed that all O-MILe behaviours were important to evidence-based practice implementation, and only minor modifications were needed for clarification and adaptation. The actions managers identified that could operationalize the leadership behaviours were related to current clinical practices, evidence-based practice, nurses, patients, interprofessional staff members, incentives and resources, organization and external entities. Three types of general competencies related to evidence-based practice, professional nursing, and implementation leadership were identified. Multimodal activities such as lectures, experience sharing, group discussions, plan development and coaching were suggested to deliver the training program. Conclusions All O-MILe leadership behaviours were perceived as essential for unit nurse managers to lead EBP implementation in the hospital context in China. We identified the leadership actions and the competencies required for nursing managers to implement EBP in China. Further studies are required to evaluate the acceptability and impact of this prototype. Further studies with large sample sizes across various clinical settings are needed to facilitate the generalization of the findings and gain an in-depth understanding of the program.

BackgroundNursing leadership teams at the point of care (POC), consisting of both formal and informal leaders, are regularly called upon to support the implementation of evidence-based practices (EBPs) in hospital units. However, current conceptualizations of effective leadership for successful implementation typically focus on the behaviors of individual leaders in managerial roles. Little is known about how multiple nursing leaders in formal and informal roles share implementation leadership (IL), representing an important knowledge gap. ObjectiveThis study aims to explore shared IL among formal and informal nursing leaders in inpatient hospital units. The central research question is as follows: How is IL shared among members of POC nursing leadership teams on inpatient hospital units? The subquestions are as follows: (1) What IL behaviors are enacted and shared by formal and informal leaders? (2) What social processes enable shared IL by formal and informal leaders? and (3) What factors influence shared IL in nursing leadership teams? MethodsWe will use a collective case study approach to describe and generate an in-depth understanding of shared IL in nursing. We will select nursing leadership teams on 2 inpatient hospital units that have successfully implemented an EBP as instrumental cases. We will construct data through focus groups and individual interviews with key informants (leaders, unit staff, and senior nurse leaders), review of organizational documents, and researcher-generated field notes. We have developed a conceptual framework of shared IL to guide data analysis, which describes effective IL behaviors, formal and informal nursing leaders’ roles at the POC, and social processes generating shared leadership and influencing contextual factors. We will use the Framework Method to systematically generate data matrices from deductive and inductive thematic analysis of each case. We will then generate assertions about shared IL following a cross-case analysis. ResultsThe study protocol received research ethics approval (2022-8408) on February 24, 2022. Data collection began in June 2022, and we have recruited 2 inpatient hospital units and 25 participants. Data collection was completed in December 2023, and data analysis is ongoing. We anticipate findings to be published in a peer-reviewed journal by late 2024. ConclusionsThe anticipated results will shed light on how multiple and diverse members of the POC nursing leadership team enact and share IL. This study addresses calls to advance knowledge in promoting effective implementation of EBPs to ensure high-quality health care delivery by further developing the concept of shared IL in a nursing context. We will identify strategies to strengthen shared IL in nursing leadership teams at the POC, informing future intervention studies. ABSTRACTInuit face worse cancer survival rates and outcomes than the general Canadian population. Persistent health disparities cannot be understood without examining the structural factors that create inequities and continue to impact the health and well-being of Inuit. This scoping review aims to synthesise the available published and grey literature on the structural factors that influence cancer care experienced by Inuit in Canada. Guided by Inuit input from Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada as well as the Joanna Briggs Institute scoping review methodology, a comprehensive electronic search along with hand-searching of grey literature and relevant journals was conducted. A total of 30 papers were included for analysis and assessment of relevance. Findings were organised into five categories as defined in the a priori framework related to colonisation, as well as health systems, social, economic, and political structures. The study results highlight interconnections between racism and colonialism, the lack of health service information on urban Inuit, as well as the need for system-wide efforts to address the structural barriers in cancer care.

Abstract Background Global health crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, confront healthcare workers (HCW) with increased exposure to potentially morally distressing events. The pandemic has provided an opportunity to explore the links between moral distress, moral resilience, and emergence of mental health symptoms in HCWs. Methods A total of 962 Canadian healthcare workers (88.4% female, 44.6 + 12.8 years old) completed an online survey during the first COVID-19 wave in Canada (between April 3rd and September 3rd, 2020). Respondents completed a series of validated scales assessing moral distress, perceived stress, anxiety, and depression symptoms, and moral resilience. Respondents were grouped based on exposure to patients who tested positive for COVID-19. In addition to descriptive statistics and analyses of covariance, multiple linear regression was used to evaluate if moral resilience moderates the association between exposure to morally distressing events and moral distress. Factors associated with moral resilience were also assessed. Findings Respondents working with patients with COVID-19 showed significantly more severe moral distress, anxiety, and depression symptoms (F > 5.5, p 9.1, p = .002), compared to healthcare workers who were not. Abstract Aim This study aimed to evaluate the validity, reliability and acceptability of the Implementation Leadership Scale in the Chinese nursing context. Design This study utilized a cross‐sectional design. Methods This study was conducted in one general tertiary hospital with 234 nurses (85.3% response rate) from 35 clinical units in China. Content validity, structural validity, convergent validity, reliability (internal consistency), agreement indices and acceptability were evaluated. The data collection was from December 1st, 2017 to June 30th, 2018. Results Confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated a good model fit to the four‐factor implementation leadership model. The psychometric testing also indicated good convergent validity, high internal consistency and acceptable aggregation. Most participants completed the scale in two minutes or less and agreed or strongly agreed that the questions were relevant to implementation leadership, clear and easy to answer. Conclusions This study demonstrated that the Chinese Implementation Leadership Scale is a valid, reliable and pragmatic tool for measuring strategic leadership for implementing evidence‐based practices.

Purpose – The aim of this study was to describe the experiences of graduate students who participated in the community of practice (CoP) and identify areas for improvement to support academic success. Design/methodology/approach – In total, 19 graduate students engaged in a CoP to facilitate social interactions, knowledge sharing and learning within a culture of scholarship. A descriptive qualitative research study was conducted using semistructured interviews with eight participants who had attended the CoP meeting. Findings – All participants were from the School of Nursing and perceived the CoP to be beneficial, particularly international students who had challenges in adapting to new academic and social environments. Areas for improvement include creating a group structure that enhances belonging and learning. Originality/value – This is the first CoP that was implemented at the Faculty of Health Sciences at the authors’ university. It has been the authors’ experience that a CoP can benefit graduate students through networking, knowledge sharing, social support and learning. The finding of this research will be used to inform a new CoP to address the needs of graduate students. The authors will be adapting the CoP to the current context that includes a virtual platform during the COVID-19 pandemic and will include content specific for international students.

Abstract Background The commitment to engage patients as partners in research has been described as a political, moral and ethical imperative. Researchers feel ill-equipped to deal with potential ethical implications of engaging patients as partners. The aim of this study is to identify the ethical considerations related to engaging frail and seriously ill (FSI) patients as partners in research. Methods We conducted a sub-analysis of a prior systematic review of 30 studies that engaged FSI patients as partners in research. Studies were included if they reported ethical considerations associated with partnering. We performed deductive content analysis, data were categorized according to Beauchamp and Childress’ Principles of Biomedical Ethics (2019): autonomy, non-maleficence, beneficence, and justice. Results Twenty-five studies were included. Common ethical considerations reported in relation to the principles were: autonomy – promoting desired level of involvement, addressing relational and intellectual power, facilitating knowledge and understanding of research; non-maleficence – protection from financial burden, physical and emotional suffering; beneficence – putting things right for others, showing value-added, and supporting patient-partners; and, justice – achieving appropriate representation, mutual respect for contributions, and distributing risks and benefits. Conclusions When partnering with FSI patients, research teams need to establish shared values and ensure processes are in place to identify and address ethical issues. Researchers and patients should work together to clarify the intent and outcomes of the partnership, actively address power differentials, recognize and minimize the potential for unintended harm, and strive to maximize the benefits of partnership. BackgroundSocial media has become widely used by individual researchers and professional organizations to translate research evidence into health care practice. Despite its increasing popularity, few social media initiatives consider the theoretical perspectives of how social media works as a knowledge translation strategy to affect research use. ObjectiveThe purpose of this paper is to propose a conceptual framework to understand how social media works as a knowledge translation strategy for health care providers, policy makers, and patients to inform their health care decision-making. MethodsWe developed this framework using an integrative approach that first involved reviewing 5 long-standing social media initiatives. We then drafted the initial framework using a deductive approach by referring to 5 theories on social media studies and knowledge translation. A total of 58 empirical studies on factors that influenced the use of social media and its messages and strategies for promoting the use of research evidence via social media were further integrated to substantiate and fine-tune our initial framework. Through an iterative process, we developed the Social Media for ImpLementing Evidence (SMILE) framework. ResultsThe SMILE framework has six key constructs: developers, messages and delivery strategies, recipients, context, triggers, and outcomes. For social media to effectively enable recipients to use research evidence in their decision-making, the framework proposes that social media content developers respond to target recipients’ needs and context and develop relevant messages and appropriate delivery strategies. The recipients’ use of social media messages is influenced by the virtual–technical, individual, organizational, and system contexts and can be activated by three types of triggers: sparks, facilitators, and signals. ConclusionsThe SMILE framework maps the factors that are hypothesized to influence the use of social media messages by recipients and offers a heuristic device for social media content developers to create interventions for promoting the use of evidence in health care decision-making. Empirical studies are now needed to test the propositions of this framework.

Abstract Background The expectation to include patients as partners in research has steadily gained momentum. The vulnerability of frail and/or seriously ill patients provides additional complexity and may deter researchers from welcoming individuals from this patient population onto their teams. The aim was to synthesize the evidence on the engagement of frail and/or seriously ill patients as research partners across the research cycle. Methods A systematic review was conducted using PRISMA guidelines. A search strategy included MEDLINE®, EMBASE®, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), and PsycINFO from database inception to April, 2019. Eligible studies were peer-reviewed qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research reporting on the engagement of frail and/or seriously ill patients as partners on research teams. The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool was used to appraise study quality. Narrative analysis was conducted. Results Of 8763 citations, 30 were included. Most studies included individuals with cancer on the research team (60%). Barriers included: lack of time and resources (50%), discontinuity in contribution (37%), and concerns for well-being (33%). Facilitators included: trust and mutual respect (60%), structural accessibility (57%), flexibility in timing and methods of engagement (43%), and attention to care and comfort, (33%). Perceived impacts for patients included: renewed personal sense of agency (37%) and emotional/peer support (37%). Impacts for researchers included sensitization to the lived experience of disease (57%) and an increased appreciation of the benefits of patient engagement (23%). Research design, execution, and outcomes, developed with patients, were deemed more suitable, relevant and reflective of patients’ priorities. Conclusions There is emerging evidence to suggest that research partnerships with frail and/or seriously ill patients can be achieved successfully. Patients mostly report benefit from partnering with research teams. Frailty and/or serious illness do present legitimate concerns for their well-being but appear to be successfully mitigated when researchers ensure that the purpose of engagement is well-defined, the timing and methods of engagement are flexible, and the practical and emotional needs of patient partners are addressed throughout the process. Almost half of all Canadians live with sensory, cognitive, or physical impairment due to injury, illness, or ageing. Yet, research investigating the complex relationship between well-being and impairment is limited. Existing research has largely rendered invisible peoples’ experiences of a good life while living with impairment. In response, researchers are calling for interdisciplinary research that integrates new paradigms. Using innovative qualitative and visual research methods, our team will work with 24 women living with impairment as a result of cancer and/or its treatments to explore how creative practices can contribute to new understandings of a good life. Participants will be invited to complete mixed-media arts workshops during which they will create artwork representing their experiences of well-being while living with impairment. After the workshops, each participant will be asked to complete an individual interview about their experiences and their creative work. Next, a rough cut of a film will be produced from the workshop recordings and participants will be invited to provide feedback at a private screening. The research will culminate in a public screening of the film and an exhibit of participants’ work. Audience members (health professionals, students, participants, and the general public) will participate in a discussion following the screening and will be asked to complete a short survey about the event. This research will enhance public understandings of what it means to live well with impairment. In addition, the research will potentially impact health practices through querying dominant biomedical paradigms focused on curative approaches and distress.

Abstract Background Leadership is critical to supporting and facilitating the implementation of evidence-based practices in health care. Yet, little is known about how to develop leadership capacity for this purpose. The aims of this study were to explore the (1) feasibility of delivering a leadership intervention to promote implementation, (2) usefulness of the leadership intervention, and (3) participants’ engagement in leadership to implement evidence-based fall prevention practices in Canadian residential care. Methods We conducted a mixed-method before-and-after feasibility study on two units in a Canadian residential care facility. The leadership intervention was based on the Ottawa model of implementation leadership (O-MILe) and consisted of two workshops and two individualized coaching sessions over 3 months to develop leadership capacity for implementing evidence-based fall prevention practices. Participants (n = 10) included both formal (e.g., managers) and informal (e.g., nurses and care aids leaders). Outcome measures were parameters of feasibility (e.g., number of eligible candidates who attended the workshops and coaching sessions) and usefulness of the leadership intervention (e.g., ratings, suggested modifications). We conducted semi-structured interviews guided by the Implementation Leadership Scale (ILS), a validated measure of 12-item in four subcategories (proactive, supportive, knowledgeable, and perseverant), to explore the leadership behaviors that participants used to implement fall prevention practices. We repeated the ILS in a focus group meeting to understand the collective leadership behaviors used by the intervention team. Barriers and facilitators to leading implementation were also explored. Results Delivery of the leadership intervention was feasible. All participants (n = 10) attended the workshops and eight participated in at least one coaching session. Workshops and coaching were rated useful (≥ 3 on a 0–4 Likert scale where 4 = highly useful) by 71% and 86% of participants, respectively. Participants rated the O-MILe subcategories of supportive and perseverant leadership highest for individual leadership, whereas supportive and knowledgeable leadership were rated highest for team leadership. Conclusions The leadership intervention was feasible to deliver, deemed useful by participants, and fostered engagement in implementation leadership activities. Study findings highlight the complexity of developing implementation leadership and modifications required to optimize impact. Future trials are now required to test the effectiveness of the leadership intervention on developing leadership for implementing evidence-based practices.

Abstract Background Cancer among Indigenous people is increasing faster than overall Canadian rates. Lack of survivorship support, including screening and follow-up for recurrences, contributes to poor health outcomes and low 5-year survival rates. Historical trauma from colonization and lack of culturally safe and responsive healthcare has negatively affected Indigenous peoples’ access to survivorship supports. Nurses are typically the sole practitioners of health services in rural and remote Indigenous communities and can enhance the development, implementation, and delivery of culturally safe survivorship supports. However, the implementation of culturally safe healthcare in Indigenous communities is not well developed. This is the third study in a larger program of research with an overarching goal to improve healthcare delivery and outcomes with Indigenous people in Canada. In this study, we will field test nurses’ implementation of cancer survivorship care with Indigenous people in Ontario, Canada. Methods The study is a descriptive participatory mixed methods research design involving a systematic review, field testing implementation of cancer survivorship supports in two communities, focus groups, and qualitative interviews. Outcomes include feasibility of implementation, acceptability of the strategies, and perceived impact on healing and psychosocial support. Discussion Results will advance knowledge about implementing culturally safe cancer survivorship supports with Indigenous people in Ontario. A toolkit will be developed to inform nursing practices, programs, and policies to improve cancer survivorship supports and strategies with Indigenous people. Findings will inform a large-scale implementation study to reduce healthcare disadvantages and disparities within Indigenous communities across Canada.

Cancer is a leading cause of death among Inuit. A legacy of colonialism, residential schools, and systemic racism has eroded trust among Inuit and many do not receive culturally safe care. This study aimed to explore the meaning of culturally safe cancer survivorship care for Inuit, and barriers and facilitators to receiving it in an urban setting in Ontario Canada. As Inuit and Western researchers, we conducted a descriptive qualitative study. We held two focus groups (n = 27) with cancer survivors and family members, and semi-structured interviews (n = 7) with health providers. Data were analysed using thematic content analysis. Three broad themes emerged as central to culturally safe care: access to traditional ways of life, communication, and family involvement. Family support, patient navigators, and designated spaces were facilitators; lack of support for traditional ways, like country food, was a barrier. Participants were clear what constituted culturally safe care, but major barriers exist. Lack of direction at institutional and governmental levels contributes to the complexity of issues that prevent Inuit from engaging in and receiving culturally safe cancer care. To understand how to transform healthcare to be culturally safe, studies underpinned by Inuit epistemology, values, and principles are required.

Abstract Background Research into evidence-based practice has been extensively explored in nursing and there is strong recognition that the organizational context influences implementation. A range of barriers has been identified; however, the research has predominantly taken place in Western cultures, and there is little information about factors that influence evidence-based practice in China. The purpose of this study was to explore barriers and facilitators to evidence-based practice in Hunan province, a less developed region in China. Methods A descriptive qualitative methodology was employed. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with staff nurses, head nurses and directors (n = 13). Interviews were translated into English and verified for accuracy by two bilingual researchers. Both Chinese and English data were simultaneously analyzed for themes related to factors related to the evidence to be implemented (Innovation), nurses’ attitudes and beliefs (Potential Adopters), and the organizational setting (Practice Environment). Results Barriers included lack of available evidence in Chinese, nurses’ lack of understanding of what evidence-based practice means, and fear that patients will be angry about receiving care that is perceived as non-traditional. Nurses believed evidence-based practice was to be used when clinical problems arose, and not as a routine way to practice. Facilitators included leadership support and the pervasiveness of web based social network services such as Baidu (百度) for easy access to information. Conclusion While several parallels to previous research were found, our study adds to the knowledge base about factors related to evidence-based practice in different contextual settings. Findings are important for international comparisons to develop strategies for nurses to provide evidence-based care.

Transitioning to breast cancer survivorship can be challenging, yet there are few community-based supports. Writing is a promising psychosocial intervention, but most studies have evaluated independent writing. In contrast, our qualitative study (n=12) explored women’s experiences in a community-based workshop. The analysis of workshop recordings, journals, and interviews resulted in three themes: (a) Sharing in safe spaces, (b) Seeking permission and balance, and (c) Fear and uncertainty. The themes document unmet needs related to the emotional impact of breast cancer, as well as the potential of community-based writing to enhance well-being. Such programs may address gaps in cancer survivorship care by providing safe spaces for emotional expression, while supporting participants in the crafting of new narratives focused on well-being.

Survivre au cancer du sein peut s’avérer difficile vu le peu de soutien communautaire disponible dans ce domaine. En ce sens, l’écriture constitue une intervention psychosociale prometteuse, mais la plupart des études n’ont évalué cette activité que du point de vue individuel. Pour faire contrepoint, notre étude qualitative (n = 12) a analysé l’expérience vécue par des femmes ayant participé à un atelier d’écriture communautaire. L’analyse des entrevues effectuées dans le cadre de l’étude, ainsi que des carnets d’écriture tenus par les participantes et des enregistrements de l’atelier a mis en évidence trois thèmes : a) avoir un endroit rassurant pour se confier; b) se donner le droit de penser à soi et chercher à retrouver son équilibre; c) surmonter ses craintes et combattre l’incertitude. Ces thèmes illustrent les besoins non comblés liés à l’impact émotionnel du cancer du sein, ainsi que le pouvoir de l’écriture en groupe en vue de favoriser le bien-être. Les programmes (communautaires) peuvent pallier aux lacunes présentes dans les soins offerts aux survivants du cancer, en créant des endroits rassurants pour l’expression des émotions, tout en soutenant les participantes dans la rédaction de nouveaux récits axés sur le bien-être et la tenue d’un journal.

BackgroundResearch has shown that adverse events during care transitions from hospital to home can have a significant impact on patients' outcomes, leading to readmission, delayed healing or even death. Gaps exist in the ways of monitoring care during transition periods and there is a need to help organizations better implement and monitor safe person-and family-centered care. Value statements are a way to obtain narratives in lay terms about how well care, treatment and support is organized to meet the needs and preferences of patients/families. The purpose of this study was to identify the value statements that are perceived by decision-makers and patients/families to best signify safe person- and family-centered care during transitions from hospital to home.MethodsBetween January and September 2017, a web-based Delphi was used to survey key stakeholders in acute care and home care organizations across Canada.ResultsDecision-makers (n = 22) and patients/families (n = 24) from five provinces participated in the Delphi. Following Round 1, 45 perceived value statements were identified. In Round 2, consensus was received on 33/45 (73.3%) by decision-makers, and 30/45 (66.7%) by patients/families. In Round 3, additional value statements reached consensus in the decision-makers' survey (3) and in the patients/families' survey (2). A total of 30 high priority value statements achieved consensus derived from both the decision-makers' and patients/families' perspectives.ConclusionThis study was an important first step in identifying key consensus-based priority value statements for monitoring care transitions from the perspective of both decision-makers and patients/families. Future research is needed to test their usability and to determine whether these value statements are actually suggestive of safe person-and family-centered care transition interventions from hospital to home.

Background: Previous research supports the claim that managers are vital players in the implementation of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs), yet little is known about interventions aiming to develop managers’ leadership in facilitating implementation. In this pilot study, process evaluation was employed to study the feasibility and usefulness of a leadership intervention by exploring the intervention’s potential to support managers in the implementation of national guideline recommendations for stroke care in outpatient rehabilitation. Methods: Eleven senior and frontline managers from five outpatient stroke rehabilitation centers participated in a fourmonth leadership intervention that included workshops, seminars, and teleconferences. The focus was on developing knowledge and skills to enhance the implementation of CPG recommendations, with a particular focus on leadership behaviors. Each dyad of managers was assigned to develop a leadership plan with specific goals and leadership behaviors for implementing three rehabilitation recommendations. Feasibility and usefulness were explored through observations and interviews with the managers and staff members prior to the intervention, and then one month and one year after the intervention. Results: Managers considered the intervention beneficial, particularly the participation of both senior and frontline managers and the focus on leadership knowledge and skills for implementing CPG recommendations. All the managers developed a leadership plan, but only two units identified goals specific to implementing the three stroke rehabilitation recommendations. Of these, only one identified leadership behaviors that support implementation. Conclusion: Managers found that the intervention was delivered in a feasible way and appreciated the focus on leadership to facilitate implementation. However, the intervention appeared to have limited impact on managers’ behaviors or clinical practice at the units. Future interventions directed towards managers should have a stronger focus on developing leadership skills and behaviors to tailor implementation plans and support implementation of CPG recommendations.

Cette revue exploratoire avait pour but d’examiner les interventions utilisées par les infirmières dans le contexte des soins à domicile pour gérer les symptômes chez les adultes atteints de cancer. Des recherches ont été effectuées dans diverses bases de données (CINAHL, Medline, PubMed, EBM Reviews et Joanna Briggs Institute Evidence Based Practice) à l’aide des mots clés cancer, domicile, soins infirmiers, symptôme et protocole. Parmi les 390 articles trouvés, cinq répondaient aux critères d’inclusion. Les études retenues ont été réalisées entre 1989 et 2009. Les résultats ont révélé que les services de soins infirmiers à domicile amélioraient la gestion des symptômes, favorisaient l’autonomie, contribuaient à maintenir la qualité de vie et diminuaient l’utilisation des services de soins de santé. Deux études ont utilisé des lignes directrices fondées sur des données probantes pour la gestion des symptômes du cancer. Même si peu d’études ont exploré les interventions infirmières pour la gestion à domicile des symptômes du cancer, leurs données probantes indiquent que cette pratique améliore certains résultats concernant les patients et le système.

The aim of this scoping review was to examine interventions used by nurses in the home setting for symptom management of adults with cancer. Databases were searched (CINAHL, Medline, PubMed, EBM Reviews, Joanna Briggs Institute EBP) with key words cancer, home, nursing, symptom, and protocol. Out of 390 identified citations, five met the inclusion criteria. Studies were conducted from 1989 to 2009. Findings revealed that home care nursing services improved symptom management, promoted independence, maintained quality of life, and decreased use of health care services. Two studies used evidence-based guidelines for cancer symptom management. Although few studies have explored nursing interventions for cancer symptom management in the home setting, their evidence suggests some improved client- and system-level outcomes.

There is a significant knowledge-to-action gap in cancer survivorship care for First Nations (FN) communities. To date, many approaches to survivorship have not been culturally responsive or community-based. This study is using an Indigenous knowledge translation (KT) approach to mobilize community-based knowledge about cancer survivorship into health-care programs. Our team includes health-care providers and cancer survivors from an FN community in Canada and an urban hospital that delivers Cancer Care Ontario’s Aboriginal Cancer Program. Together, we will study the knowledge-to-action process to inform future KT research with Indigenous peoples for improving health-care delivery and outcomes. The study will be conducted in settings where research relations and partnerships have been established through our parent study, The National Picture Project. The inclusion of community liaisons and the continued engagement of participants from our parent study will foster inclusiveness and far-reaching messaging. Knowledge about unique cancer survivorship needs co-created with FN people in the parent study will be mobilized to improve cancer follow-up care and to enhance quality of life. Findings will be used to plan a large-scale implementation study across Canada.

Trauma-informed care is an emerging concept that acknowledges the lasting effects of trauma. Nurses are uniquely positioned to play an integral role in the advancement of trauma-informed care. However, knowledge related to trauma-informed care in nursing practice remains limited. The purpose of this article is to present the results of a qualitative study which explored nurses’ understandings and experiences related to trauma-informed care. Seven semistructured interviews were conducted with nurses and four categories emerged from the analysis: (a) Conceptualizing Trauma and Trauma-Informed Care, (b) Nursing Care and Trauma, (c) Context of Trauma-Informed Care, and (d) Dynamics of the Nurse–Patient Relationship in the Face of Trauma. These findings highlight important considerations for trauma-informed care including the complex dynamics of trauma that affect care, the need to push knowledge about trauma beyond mental health care, and noteworthy parallels between nursing care and trauma-informed care.

Nearly 40% of Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, and people with cancer are increasingly turning to the Internet to bolster support and information received from health-care providers. However, little is known about the role of the Internet in patients’ interactions with the health-care system. The goals of this study are (1) to qualitatively explore the content of commonly used websites from a holistic nursing perspective, (2) to explore the prompts to use the Internet and how it informs the ways patients utilize and interact with health services, and (3) to document the types of Internet resources and amounts of usage. This study is guided by a constructivist mixed methods design. Interpretive description will guide the overarching qualitative component, including an analysis of data from commonly used websites and interviews with 16 newly diagnosed individuals. Open-ended interviews will clarify, through exploration, the role of the Internet in participants’ health system interactions. A survey of Internet use will add insight and depth about where, when, and how participants use the Internet. All interviews and website data will be analyzed using thematic analysis. Descriptive statistics will illustrate a summary of Internet usage. Triangulation of findings will provide oncology nurses and interdisciplinary team members with insight into how patients’ use of the Internet informs their use of health services. Methodologically, this study advances the use of qualitative methods for websites analysis, on which relatively little has been documented.

Little is known about First Nations, Inuit, and Métis (FNIM) women's experiences with cancer, including how they relate to cultural and social factors such as geography, history, racism, identity, traditional values/practices, and spirituality. Research into FNIM women's strengths and challenges in relation to cancer is much needed. Our team, in partnership with Saint Elizabeth Health, is documenting the experiences and needs of 60 FNIM cancer survivors across Canada, using sharing sessions, photography (photovoice), journaling, and film. We will evaluate the impact of photography and journaling on the participants to assist with the future development of supportive programs and health- care delivery. This innovative research will result in a video, which will address gaps in knowledge and care. The video will then be screened in several communities and will be publicly available. In future projects, the findings and video will be used in supportive programs for cancer survivors and in educational initiatives for health professionals.
