The Exploration Series on Visions, Needs and Requirements for (future) Research Environments was driven by the following rationale: We believe that the more one thinks about preferred futures, the more one learns about the present. Thus, obtaining a better understanding on how research is changing to elaborate visions on how research may be conducted in 10 to 15 years is crucial to shape desirable ways into that future. In this respect, perspectives on the future of (European) research (infrastructures) should be broadened through continued exploration. We therefore hope both to establish continuous exchange and discussion beyond the end of the project, and to initiate systemic changes in the long term. Against this background, the present report identifies starting points for debate that are important to shaping research environments, rather than singling out the one path to the future of research by collecting immediate needs and requirements for (future) research environments.

In many theories on the social and cultural evolution of human societies, the number and density of people living together in a given time and region is a crucial factor. Since direct data on past demographic developments are lacking and reliability and validity of demographic proxies require careful evaluation, the topic has been approached from several different directions. This paper provides an introduction to a geostatistical approach for estimating prehistoric population size and density, the so-called Cologne Protocol and discusses underlying theoretical assumptions and upscaling transfer-functions between different spatial scale levels of the Cologne Protocol. We describe and compare the specifics of the Cologne Protocol for farming and for foraging contexts and, using examples, discuss a diachronic series of estimates, covering the population dynamics of roughly 40 kyr of European prehistory. Ethnohistoric accounts, results from other approaches—including absolute (ethno-environmental models) and relative estimates (site-numbers, dates as data, etc.)allow a first positioning of the estimates within this field of research. Future enhancements, applications and testing of the Cologne Protocol are outlined and positioned within the general theoretical and methodological avenues of palaeodemographic research. During the use stage of buildings, their consumption of electricity has proved to influence considerably their environmental performance. The impacts associated with using electricity are directly related to the electricity grid that delivers the power and hence are also closely associated with the impacts induced by the production of each kWh delivered to the grid. Life cycle assessment (LCA) usually does not account for the variations in the energy sources that supply an electricity grid every day, month and year. This study addresses the dynamic nature of electricity grids and accounts for the source variations in electricity production using electricity grid data at high temporal resolutions. The study compares inventory data on electricity grid composition at hourly, daily and monthly resolutions with the conventional yearly average grid compositions from the ecoinvent database. The high-resolution electricity grid inventory data are subsequently paired with data sets for electricity consumption by buildings with matching resolutions in order to quantify the differences in the environmental performance of buildings resulting from the application of temporally high-resolution grid data. Finally, environmental building performance (EBP) calculated using high-resolution grids is compared to EBPs generated from conventional data resolutions. The results indicate that the contribution to global warming potential is closely related to the data resolution of the grid composition and that the EBP may be overestimated by up to a factor of two when compared with conventional grid inventory data with yearly (i.e. low) data resolutions.

Die seit 1990 laufenden archäologischen Forschungen des SFB 268 in NE-Nigeria haben mittlerweile zur Entdeckung zahlreicher Siedlungsstellen geführt, deren Keramik Eckwerte in der endsteinzeitlichen und früheisenzeitlichen Besiedlungsgeschichte des südwestlichen Tschadbeckens aufzeigt. Zu den Plätzen Konduga und Gajiganna A-D wurden in der Kampagne 1993 weitere 11 Fundstellen der beiden letzten vorchristlichen Jahrtausende entdeckt. Sie streuen in einem ca. 48km2 großen Gebiet südöstlich von Gajiganna. Auf vier dieser Stellen wurden Testgrabungen, auf sieben Fundplätzen Begehungen vorgenommen. Dazu kommen über 30 wahrscheinlich eisenzeitliche Fundplätze, die ebenfalls nur begangen wurden. Für den relativ kleinen, exemplarisch ausgewählten Untersuchungsraum besteht somit eine umfangreiche Fundplatzliste, die für die nachfolgenden Betrachtungen eine solide Grundlage bietet.

Die Auswertung der Stratigraphien und Keramikinventare des Final Stone Age aus dem südwestlichen Tschadbecken führte zu einer zeitlichen Gliederung der Inventare. Durch die vorgestellten Analysen zu Merkmalen der Keramikform, -technik und -verzierung wurden zwei Stilgruppen - der ältere und der jüngere Gajigannastil - definiert und beschrieben. Für die jüngere Gajiganna Stilphase war eine weitere Unterteilung in drei Stufen möglich, die die keramische Entwicklung zwischen 1.500 BC bis ca. 800 BC gliedern. Das gelang bisher noch nicht mit Keramik der älteren Stilphase. Die Analyse der Grabungsprofile brachte Hinweise zu Speichergruben, ermöglicht Spekulationen über Lehmbauten in Fundplätzen der jüngeren Gajigannaphase und läßt Rückschlüsse auf eine stärkere Geländeprofilierung als die heute anzutreffende zu. Die Einordnung der begangenen Plätze in die Stilgruppen zeigte keine wesentlichen Unterschiede bei der Wahl der Siedlungsplätze. Die Randlage zu den vermutlich nicht nur saisonal gefluteten Tonebenen ist für beide bezeichnend. Die Siedlungsplätze boten in dieser Lage einige Vorteile. Die Sandgebiete dienten als Weiden für Rinder. Fischfang konnte an den Ufern der überschwemmten Gebiete betrieben werden, die ebenfalls ein reiches Reservoir an Wildpflanzen boten, die das Nahrungsangebot ergänzten. Ein Vergleich der Inventare mit anderen westafrikanischen Fundplätzen zeigt, daß die ältere Keramikphase der Gajiganna-Gruppe in einen überregionalen Verzierungstil eingebettet ist, der durch Winkelbänder und dreieckige Einstiche charakterisiert wird und sich über ein weites Gebiet zwischen Sudan im Osten und Niger im Westen spannt. Die hier vorgestellte Keramik der Phase I ist der südlichste Vertreter dieses Verzierungshorizontes. Die jüngere Stilphase konnte bisher nur kleinräumig nachgewiesen werden. Ihr Verbreitungsgebiet scheint auf das Tschadbecken beschränkt zu sein. Das mag entweder im gegenwärtigen Forschungsstand oder in einer um die Mitte des zweiten Jahrtausends beginnenden Regionalisierung der Keramikstile begründet sein. Die einzelnen Ergebnisse flossen in eine modellhafte Abhandlung zur Besiedlungsgeschichte des südwestlichen Tschadbeckens ein. Diese wäre unvollständig gewesen ohne die Ergebnisse der Archäobotanik und der Archäozoologie. Der Nachweis von domestizierter Hirse in den Fundplätzen der jüngeren Gajiganna-Gruppe ab der Stufe 2b ist ein wichtiges Ergebnis, das dazu beiträgt, die Veränderungen zu erfassen, die sich hinter dem Stilwechsel in den Keramikinventaren verbergen. Es scheint so, als hätte sich eine Verschiebung in der Gewichtung von Viehzucht zu Ackerbau vollzogen. Eine Veränderung des Siedlungsverhaltens mit engerer Bindung an die genutzte Fläche könnte eher die Vorbedingung als die Folge gewesen sein. Größere Platzkontinuität ist bereits in Phase 2a zu vermuten, sichtbar gemacht durch die hier erstmalig auftretenden komplexen Stratigraphien und wahrscheinlich begründet durch die verstärkte Nutzung von Wildgetreide. In Phase 2b wird domestiziertes Pennisetum bei einer weitgehend seßhaften Bevölkerung eingeführt. Kein radikaler Wechsel ist in den Strategien der Subsistenzwirtschaft zu beobachten. Stattdessen führt ein allmählicher Prozeß über einige hundert Jahre vom Viehzüchter zum Ackerbauern. Die Beziehungen zwischen den Fundstellen nördlich der Mandaraberge und denen im Gebiet um Zilum einerseits und den hier vorgestellten Fundstellen andererseits deuten auf eine regional in randliche Siedlungsgebiete verschobene Weiterentwicklung bis in die Eisenzeit, während die ehemaligen Kerngebiete wahrscheinlich von anderen Siedlern aus den Firki-Ebenen heraus besiedelt wurden. Offen bleiben müssen Fragen zu Hausbau, Siedlungsstruktur und Größe der Nutzflächen, die jeweils zu einer Siedlung gehörten. Auch fehlen noch hinreichende Daten, um die Beziehungen der Siedlungen untereinander zu erfassen und eventuell vorhandene Netzwerkstrukturen auszuarbeiten. Hier ergeben sich weitere Forschungsfelder, die zu neuen Erkenntnissen zur Stellung des Gajigannakomplexes im Kontext der westafrikanischen Prähistorie führen werden.
