The photoinduced switching of Fe(II)-based spin-crossover complexes from singlet to quintet takes place at ultrafast time scales. This a priori spin-forbidden transition triggered numerous time-resolved experiments of solvated samples to elucidate the mechanism at play. The involved intermediate states remain uncertain. We apply ultrafast x-ray spectroscopy in molecular films as a method sensitive to spin, electronic, and nuclear degrees of freedom. Combining the progress in molecule synthesis and film growth with the opportunities at x-ray free-electron lasers, we analyze the transient evolution of the Fe L3 fine structure at room temperature. Our measurements and calculations indicate the involvement of an Fe triplet intermediate state. The high-spin state saturates at half of the available molecules, limited by molecule-molecule interaction within the film.

Rare earth-transition metal ferrimagnets, featuring antiferromagnetically coupled, inequivalent magnetic sublattices, have garnered increasing interest in the burgeoning field of ferrimagnetic spintronics. However, controlling their magnetism with low voltages,a key to reducing power consumption,remains challenging, particularly due to the poorly understood mechanisms underlying bulk perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). Here, we introduce a method involving voltage-driven hydrogen insertion into interstitial sites between Tb and Co atoms, selectively perturbing the atomic structure and enabling ultra-low-voltage (1.2 V) switching of bulk PMA to in-plane directions in ferrimagnetic films. Combining experimental and theoretical analysis, we find that the anisotropy switching originates from the reorientation of Tb orbital moments induced by the distortion of the crystal field. Initially aligned along Tb-Co bonding directions, the easy magnetization axis undergoes reorientation and switches by 90 deg,as substantiated by ab-initio calculations. Photo-doped states in strongly correlated charge transfer insulators are characterized by $d$-$d$ and $d$-$p$ interactions and the resulting intertwined dynamics of charge excitations and local multiplets. Here we use femtosecond x-ray absorption spectroscopy in combination with dynamical mean-field theory to disentangle these contributions in NiO. Upon resonant optical excitation across the charge transfer gap, the Ni $L_3$ and O $K$ absorption edges red-shift for $>10$ ps, associated with photo-induced changes in the screening environment. An additional signature below the Ni $L_3$ edge is identified for $<1$ ps, reflecting a transient nonthermal population of local many-body multiplets. We employ a nonthermal generalization of the multiplet ligand field theory to show that the feature originates from $d$-$d$ transitions. Overall, the photo-doped state differs significantly from a chemically doped state. Our results demonstrate the ability to reveal excitation pathways in correlated materials by x-ray spectroscopies, which is relevant for ultrafast materials design.

This work investigates the effect of copper substitution on the magnetic properties of SmCo$_{5}$ thin films synthesized by molecular beam epitaxy. A series of thin films with varying concentrations of Cu were grown under otherwise identical conditions to disentangle structural and compositional effects on the magnetic behavior. The combined experimental and theoretical studies show that Cu substitution at the Co$_{3g}$ sites not only stabilizes the formation of the SmCo$_{5}$ structure but enhances magnetic anisotropy and coercivity. Density functional theory calculations indicate that Sm(Co$_4$Cu$_{3g}$)$_5$ possesses a higher single-ion anisotropy as compared to pure SmCo$_{5}$. In addition, X-ray magnetic circular dichroism reveals that Cu substitution causes an increasing decoupling of the Sm 4\textit{f} and Co 3\textit{d} moments. Scanning transmission electron microscopy confirms predominantly SmCo$_{5}$ phase formation and reveals nanoscale inhomogeneities in the Cu and Co distribution. Our study based on thin film model systems and advanced characterization as well as modeling reveals novel aspects of the complex interplay of intrinsic and extrinsic contributions to magnetic hysteresis in rare earth-based magnets, \textit{i.e.} the combination of increased intrinsic anisotropy due to Cu substitution and the extrinsic effect of inhomogeneous elemental distribution of Cu and Co.

Magnetic cooling has the potential to replace conventional gas compression refrigeration. Materials such as La(Fe,Si)$_{13}$ exhibit a sizeable first-order magnetocaloric effect, and it is possible to tailor the phase transition towards room temperature by Mn-H-doping, resulting in a large temperature range for operation. Within this work, we discuss variations of the electronic and lattice structure in La(Fe,Si)$_{13}$ with increasing Mn content utilizing X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS). While XMCD shows a decrease of the magnetic polarization at the Fe K edge, low-temperature EXAFS measurements indicate increased positional disorder in the La environment that is otherwise absent for Fe and Mn. The Shell-ferromagnetic effect originates from the segregation process in off-stochiometric Ni-Mn-based Heusler. In this work, we investigate the precipitation process of L2$_1$-ordered Ni$_2$MnSn and L1$_0$-ordered NiMn in off-stochiometric Ni$_{50}$Mn$_{45}$Sn$_{5}$ during temper annealing, by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and $^{119}$Sn M\"ossbauer spectroscopy. While XRD probes long-range ordering of the lattice structure, M\"ossbauer spectroscopy probes nearest-neighbour interactions, reflected in the induced Sn magnetic moment. As shown in this work, the induced magnetic Sn moment can be used as a detector for microscopic structural changes and is, therefore, a powerful tool for investigating the formation of nano-precipitates. The pulse intensity from X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs) can create extreme excitation densities in solids, entering the regime of non-linear X-ray-matter interactions. We show L3-edge absorption spectra of metallic nickel thin films with fluences entering a regime where several X-ray photons are incident per absorption cross-section. Femtosecond transient soft X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) is a very promising technique that can be employed at X-ray Free Electron Lasers (FELs) to investigate out-of-equilibrium dynamics for material and energy research. Here we present a dedicated setup for soft X-rays available at the Spectroscopy & Coherent Scattering (SCS) instrument at the European X-ray Free Electron Laser (EuXFEL). It consists of a beam-splitting off-axis zone plate (BOZ) used in transmission to create three copies of the incoming beam, which are used to measure the transmitted intensity through the excited and unexcited sample, as well as to monitor the incoming intensity. Since these three intensity signals are detected shot-by-shot and simultaneously, this setup allows normalized shot-by-shot analysis of the transmission. For photon detection, the DSSC imaging detector, which is capable of recording up to 800 images at 4.5 MHz frame rate during the FEL burst, is employed and allows approaching the photon shot-noise limit. The complex electronic structure of metallic ferromagnets is determined by a balance between exchange interaction, electron hopping leading to band formation, and local Coulomb repulsion. The interplay between the respective terms of the Hamiltonian is of fundamental interest, since it produces most, if not all, of the exotic phenomena observed in the solid state. By combining high energy and temporal resolution in femtosecond time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy with ab initio time-dependent density functional theory we analyze the electronic structure in fcc Ni on the time scale of these interactions in a pump-probe experiment. We distinguish transient broadening and energy shifts in the absorption spectra, which we demonstrate to be caused by electron repopulation and correlation-induced modifications of the electronic structure, respectively. Importantly, the theoretical description of this experimental result hence requires to take the local Coulomb interaction into account, revealing a temporal interplay between band formation, exchange interaction, and Coulomb repulsion.

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a well-established method for in-depth characterization of the electronic structure due to its sensitivity to the local coordination and electronic states of the active ions. In practice hundreds of energy points should be sampled during the XAS measurement, most of which are redundant and do not contain important information. In addition, it is also a tedious procedure to estimate reasonable parameters in the atomic Hamiltonian for mechanistic understanding. We implemented an Adversarial Bayesian optimization (ABO) algorithm comprising two coupled BOs to automatically fit the multiplet model Hamiltonian and meanwhile to sample effectively based on active learning. Taking NiO as an example, for simulated spectra which can be well fitted by the atomic model, we found that less than 30 sampling points are enough to obtain the complete XAS with the corresponding crystal field or charge transfer model, which can be selected based on intuitive hypothesis learning. Further application on the experimental spectra, it revealed that less than 80 sampling points can already give reasonable XAS and reliable atomic model parameters. A single-crystal sheet of graphene is synthesized on the low-symmetry substrate Ir(110) by thermal decomposition of C$_2$H$_4$ at 1500 K. Using scanning tunneling microscopy, low-energy electron diffraction, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and ab initio density functional theory the structure and electronic properties of the adsorbed graphene sheet and its moir\'e with the substrate are uncovered. The adsorbed graphene layer forms a wave pattern of nm wave length with a corresponding modulation of its electronic properties. This wave pattern is demonstrated to enable the templated adsorption of aromatic molecules and the uniaxial growth of organometallic wires. Not limited to this, graphene on Ir(110) is also a versatile substrate for 2D-layer growth and makes it possible to grow epitaxial layers on ureconstructed Ir(110)., Comment: 34 pages, 14 figures

High entropy oxides (HEOs) are a rapidly emerging class of functional materials consisting of multiple principal cations. The original paradigm of HEOs assumes cationic occupations with the highest possible configurational entropy allowed by the composition and crystallographic structure. However, the fundamental question remains on the actual degree of configurational disorder in HEOs, especially, in systems with a low enthalpy barriers for cation anti-site mixing. Considering the experimental limitations due to the presence of multiple principal cations in HEOs, here we utilize a robust and cross-referenced characterization approach using soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism, hard X-ray absorption spectroscopy, M\"ossbauer spectroscopy, neutron powder diffraction and SQUID magnetometry to study the competition between crystal field stabilization energy and configurational entropy governing the cation occupation in a spinel HEO (S-HEO), (Co$_{0.2}$Cr$_{0.2}$Fe$_{0.2}$Mn$_{0.2}$Ni$_{0.2}$)$_3$O$_4$. In contrast to the previous studies, the derived complete structural and spin-electronic model, (Co$_{0.6}$Fe$_{0.4}$)(Cr$_{0.3}$Fe$_{0.1}$Mn$_{0.3}$Ni$_{0.3}$)$_2$O$_4$, highlights a significant deviation from the hitherto assumed paradigm of entropy-driven non-preferential distribution of cations in HEOs. An immediate correlation of this result can be drawn with bulk as well as the local element specific magnetic properties, which are intrinsically dictated by cationic occupations in spinels. The real local lattice picture presented here provides an alternate viewpoint on ionic arrangement in HEOs, which is of fundamental interest for predicting and designing their structure-dependent functionalities.

We investigate the evolution of spin polarization, spontaneous Hall angle (SHA), saturation magnetization and Curie temperature of $B2$-ordered Fe$_{60}$Al$_{40}$ thin films under varying antisite disorder, induced by Ne$^{+}$-ion irradiation. The spin polarization increases monotonically as a function of ion fluence. A relatively high polarization of 46 % and the SHA of 3.1 % are achieved on 40 nm thick films irradiated with 2 $\cdot$ 10$^{16}$ ions/cm$^2$ at 30 keV. An interesting divergence in the trends of the magnetization and SHA is observed for low disorder concentrations. The high spin polarization and its broad tunability range make ion-irradiated Fe$_{60}$Al$_{40}$ a promising material for application in spin electronic devices.

This study focuses on the synthesis of FeRh nanoparticles via pulsed laser ablation in liquid and on controlling the oxidation of the synthesized nanoparticles. Formation of monomodal {\gamma}-FeRh nanoparticles was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and their composition confirmed by atom probe tomography (APT). On these particles, three major contributors to oxidation were analysed: 1) dissolved oxygen in the organic solvents, 2) the bound oxygen in the solvent and 3) oxygen in the atmosphere above the solvent. The decrease of oxidation for optimized ablation conditions was confirmed through energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) and M\"ossbauer spectroscopy. Furthermore, the time dependence of oxidation was monitored for dried FeRh nanoparticles powders using ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy (FMR). By magnetophoretic separation, B2-FeRh nanoparticles could be extracted from the solution and characteristic differences of nanostrand formation between {\gamma}-FeRh and B2-FeRh nanoparticles were observed.

In the standard model of charge density wave (CDW) transitions, the displacement along a single phonon mode lowers the total electronic energy by creating a gap at the Fermi level, making the CDW a metal--insulator transition. Here, using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy and ab initio calculations, we show that VS$_2$ realizes a CDW which stands out of this standard model. There is a full CDW gap residing in the unoccupied states of monolayer VS$_2$. At the Fermi level, the CDW induces a topological metal-metal (Lifshitz) transition. Non-linear coupling of transverse and longitudinal phonons is essential for the formation of the CDW and the full gap above the Fermi level. Additionally, x-ray magnetic circular dichroism reveals the absence of net magnetization in this phase, pointing to coexisting charge and spin density waves in the ground state.

High entropy oxides (HEOs) are single phase solid solutions consisting of 5 or more cations in approximately equiatomic proportions. In this study, we show reversible control of optical properties in a rare-earth (RE) based HEO-(Ce$_{0.2}$La$_{0.2}$Pr$_{0.2}$Sm$_{0.2}$Y$_{0.2}$)O$_{2-\delta}$ and subsequently utilize a combination of spectroscopic techniques to derive the features of the electronic band structure underpinning the observed optical phenomena. Heat treatment of the HEO under vacuum atmosphere followed by reheat-treatment in air results in a reversible change of the band gap energy, from 1.9 eV to 2.5 eV. The finding is consistent with the reversible changes in the oxidation state and related $f$-orbital occupancy of Pr. However, no pertinent changes in the phase composition or crystal structure is observed upon the vacuum heat treatment. Further annealing of this HEO under H$_2$ atmosphere, followed by reheat-treatment in air, results in even larger but still reversible change of the band gap energy from 1.9 eV to 3.2 eV. This is accompanied by a disorder-order type crystal structure transition and changes in the O 2$p$-RE 5$d$ hybridization evidenced from X-ray absorption near edge spectra (XANES). The O $K$ and RE ${M_{4,5}}$/$L_{3}$ XANES indicate that the presence of Ce and Pr (in 3+/4+) state leads to the formation of intermediate 4$f$ energy levels between the O 2$p$ and RE 5$d$ gap in HEO. It is concluded that heat treatment under reducing/oxidizing atmospheres affects these intermediate levels, thus, offering the possibility to tune the band gap energy in HEO.

High entropy oxides (HEO) are a recently introduced class of oxide materials, which are characterized by a large number of elements (i.e. five or more) sharing one lattice site which crystallize in a single phase structure. One complex example of the rather young HEO family are the rare-earth transition metal perovskite high entropy oxides. In this comprehensive study, we provide an overview over the magnetic properties of three perovskite type high entropy oxides. The compounds have a rare-earth site which is occupied by five different rare-earth elements, while the transition metal site is occupied by a single transition metal. In this way a comparison to the parent binary oxides, namely the orthocobaltites, -chromites and -ferrites is possible. X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES), magnetometry and M\"ossbauer spectroscopy are employed to characterize these complex materials. In general, we find surprising similarities to the magnetic properties of the binary oxides, despite the chemical disorder on the rare-earth site. However distinct differences and interesting magnetic properties are also observed such as noncollinearity, spin reorientation transitions as well as large coercive fields of up to 2\,T at ambient temperature. Both the chemical disorder on the RE A-site, and the nature of the TM on the B-site play an important role in the physical properties of these high entropy oxides.

Changes of the magnetic and crystal structure on the microscopic scale in 40 nm FeRh thin films have been applied to investigate the phenomena of a disorder induced ferromagnetism at room temperature initiated through light ion-irradiation with fluences up to 0.125 Ne$^+$/nm$^{-2}$. Magnetometry shows an increase of magnetic ordering at low temperatures and a decrease of the transition temperature combined with a broadening of the hysteresis with rising ion fluence. $^{57}$Fe M\"ossbauer spectroscopy reveals the occurrence of an additional magnetic contributions with an hyperfine splitting of 27.2 T - identical to that of ferromagnetic B2-FeRh. The appearance of an anti-site Fe-contribution can be assumed to be lower than 0.6 Fe-at%, indicating that no change of the chemical composition is evident. The investigation of the local structure shows an increase of the static mean square relative displacement determined by X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy, while an increase of the defect-concentration has been determined by positron annihilation spectroscopy. From the changes of the microscopic magnetic structure a similarity between the temperature induced and the structural disorder induced ferromagnetic phase can be observed. We report on the impact of magnetoelastic coupling on the magnetocaloric properties of LaFe$_{11.4}$Si$_{1.6}$H$_{1.6}$ in terms of the vibrational density of states, which we determined with $^{57}$Fe nuclear resonant inelastic X-ray scattering measurements and with density-functional-theory based first-principles calculations in the ferromagnetic low-temperature and paramagnetic high-temperature phase. In experiments and calculations, we observe pronounced differences in the shape of the Fe-partial VDOS between non-hydrogenated and hydrogenated samples. This shows that hydrogen does not only shift the temperature of the first-order phase transition, but also affects the elastic response of the Fe-subsystem significantly. In turn, the anomalous redshift of the Fe VDOS, observed by going to the low-volume PM phase, survives hydrogenation. As a consequence, the change in the Fe specific vibrational entropy $\Delta S_\mathrm{lat}$ across the phase transition has the same sign as the magnetic and electronic contribution. DFT calculations show that the same mechanism, which is a consequence of the itinerant electron metamagnetism associated with the Fe subsystem, is effective in both the hydrogenated and he hydrogen-free compounds. Although reduced by 50 % as compared to the hydrogen-free system, the measured change $\Delta S_\mathrm{lat}$ of 3.2\pm1.9 J/kgK across the FM to PM transition contributes with 35 % significantly and cooperatively to the total isothermal entropy change $\Delta S_\mathrm{iso}$. Hydrogenation is observed to induce an overall blueshift of the Fe-VDOS with respect to the H-free compound; this effect, together with the enhanced Debye temperature observed, is a fingerprint of the hardening of the Fe sublattice by hydrogen incorporation. In addition, the mean Debye velocity of sound of LaFe$_{11.4}$Si$_{1.6}$H$_{1.6}$ was determined from the NRIXS and the DFT data., Comment: 13 pages 9 figures

Ferromagnetism in certain B2 ordered alloys such as Fe$_{60}$Al$_{40}$ can be switched on, and tuned, via antisite disordering of the atomic arrangement. The disordering is accompanied by a $\sim$1 % increase in the lattice parameter. Here we performed a systematic disordering of B2 Fe$_{60}$Al$_{40}$ thin films, and obtained correlations between the order parameter ($S$), lattice parameter ($a_0$), and the induced saturation magnetization ($M_{s}$). As the lattice is gradually disordered, a critical point occurs at 1-$S$=0.6 and $a_0$=291 pm, where a sharp increase of the $M_{s}$ is observed. DFT calculations suggest that below the critical point the system magnetically behaves as it would still be fully ordered, whereas above, it is largely the increase of $a_0$ in the disordered state that determines the $M_{s}$. A non-standing character of directly imaged spin-waves in confined micron-sized ultrathin permalloy (Ni\textsubscript{80}Fe\textsubscript{20}) structures is reported along with evidence of the possibility to alter the observed state by modifications to the sample geometry. Using micromagnetic simulations the presence of the spin-wave modes excited in the permalloy stripes along with the quasi-uniform modes were calculated. The predicted spin-waves were imaged in direct space using time resolved scanning transmission X-ray microscopy, combined with a ferromagnetic resonance excitation scheme (STXM-FMR). STXM-FMR measurements revealed a non-standing character of the spin-waves. Also it was shown by micromagnetic simulations and confirmed with STXM-FMR results that the observed character of the spin-waves can be influenced by the local magnetic fields in different sample geometries.

We combine $^{57}$Fe M\"ossbauer spectroscopy and $^{57}$Fe nuclear resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (NRIXS) in nanoscale polycrystalline [bcc-$^{57}$Fe/MgO] multilayers with various Fe layer thicknesses and layer-resolved density-functional-theory (DFT) based first-principles calculations of a (001)-oriented [Fe(8 ML)/MgO(8 ML)](001) heterostructure to unravel the interface-related atomic vibrational properties of a multilayer system. In theory and experiment, we observe consistently enhanced hyperfine magnetic fields compared to bulk which are associated with the Fe/MgO interface layers. NRIXS and DFT both reveal a strong reduction of the longitudinal acoustic (LA) phonon peak in combination with an enhancement of the low-energy vibrational density of states (VDOS) suggesting that the presence of interfaces and the associated increase in the layer-resolved magnetic moments results in drastic changes in the Fe-partial VDOS. From the experimental and calculated VDOS, vibrational thermodynamic properties have been determined as a function of Fe thickness and are found to be in excellent agreement., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

We present the element-specific and time resolved visualization of uniform ferromagnetic resonance excitations of a Permalloy (Py) disk - Cobalt (Co) stripe bilayer microstructure. The transverse high frequency component of the resonantly excited magnetization is sampled in the ps regime by a combination of ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) and scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM- FMR) recording snapshots of the local magnetization precession of Py and Co with nanometer spatial resolution. The approach allows us to individually image the resonant dynamic response of each element, and we find that angular momentum is transferred from the Py disk to the Co stripe and vice versa at their respective resonances. The integral (cavity) FMR spectrum of our sample shows an unexpected additional third resonance. This resonance is observed in the STXM-FMR experiments as well and our microscopic findings suggest that it is governed by magnetic exchange between Py and Co, showing for the Co stripe a difference in relative phase of the magnetization due to stray field influence., Comment: Version submitted to New Journal of Physics

Strain and strain adaption mechanisms in modern functional materials are of crucial importance for their performance. Understanding these mechanisms will advance innovative approaches for material properties engineering. Here we study the strain adaption mechanism in a thin film model system as function of epitaxial strain. Chemically disordered FeRh thin films are deposited on W-V buffer layers, which allow for large variation of the preset lattice constants, e.g. epitaxial boundary condition. It is shown by means of high resolution X-ray reciprocal space maps and transmission electron microscopy that the system reacts with a tilting mechanism of the structural units in order to adapt to the lattice constants of the buffer layer. This response explained by density functional theory calculations, which evidence an energetic minimum for structures with a distortion of c/a =0.87. The experimentally observed tilting mechanism is induced by this energy gain and allows the system to remain in the most favorable structure. In general, it is shown that the use of epitaxial model heterostructures consisting of alloy buffer layers of fully miscible elements and the functional material of interest allows to study strain adaption behaviors in great detail. This approach makes even small secondary effects observable, such as the directional tilting of the structural domains identified in the present case study.

We present a statistically motivated method to extract magnonic contrast from STXM-FMR measurement with microwave frequencies of the order of \unit[10]{GHz}. With this method it is possible to generate phase and amplitude profiles with a spatial resolution of about \unit[30]{nm} given by the STXM resolution, furthermore this method allows fo a rigoros transformation to reciprocal \vec{k}-space, revealing \vec{k}-dependent magnon properties.

It has been shown that oxide ceramics containing multiple transition and/or rare-earth elements in equimolar ratios have a strong tendency to crystallize in simple single phase structures, stabilized by the high configurational entropy. In analogy to the metallic alloy systems, these oxides are denoted high entropy oxides (HEOs). The HEO concept allows to access hitherto uncharted areas in the multi-element phase diagram. Among the already realized structures there is the highly complex class of rare earth - transition element perovskites. This fascinating class of materials generated by applying the innovative concept of high entropy stabilization provides a new and manyfold research space with promise of discoveries of unprecedented properties and phenomena. The present study provides a first investigation of the magnetic properties of selected compounds of this novel class of materials. Comprehensive studies by DC and AC magnetometry are combined with element specific spectroscopy in order to understand the interplay between magnetic exchange and the high degree of chemical disorder in the systems. We observe a predominant antiferromagnetic behavior in the single phase materials, combined with a small ferromagnetic contribution possibly stemming from small ferromagnetic clusters or configurations in the antiferromagnetic matrix. In the long term perspective it is proposed to screen the properties of this family of compounds with high throughput methods, including combined experimental and theoretical approaches.

Dust drifting inward in protoplanetary disks is subject to increasing temperatures. In laboratory experiments, we tempered basaltic dust between 873 K and 1273 K and find that the dust grains change in size and composition. These modifications influence the outcome of self-consistent low speed aggregation experiments showing a transition temperature of 1000\,K. Dust tempered at lower temperatures grows to a maximum aggregate size of $2.02 \pm 0.06$ mm, which is $1.49 \pm 0.08$ times the value for dust tempered at higher temperatures. A similar size ratio of $1.75 \pm 0.16$ results for a different set of collision velocities. This transition temperature is in agreement with orbit temperatures deduced for observed extrasolar planets. Most terrestrial planets are observed at positions equivalent to less than 1000 K. Dust aggregation on the millimeter-scale at elevated temperatures might therefore be a key factor for terrestrial planet formation.
