Abstract Alkaline metal sulfur (AMS) batteries offer a promising solution for grid-level energy storage due to their low cost and long cycle life. However, the formation of solid compounds such as M2S2 and M2S (M = Na, K) during cycling limits their performance. Here we unveil intermediate-temperature K-Na/S batteries utilizing advanced electrolytes that dissolve all polysulfides and sulfides (K2Sx, x = 1–8), significantly enhancing reaction kinetics, specific capacity, and energy density. These batteries achieve near-theoretical capacity (1655 mAh g−1 sulfur) at 75 °C with a 1 M sulfur concentration. At a 4 M sulfur concentration, they deliver 830 mAh g−1 at 2 mA cm−2, retaining 71% capacity after 1000 cycles. This new K-Na/S battery with specific energy of 150-250 Wh kg−1 only employs earth-abundant elements, making it attractive for long-duration energy storage.

Aims: This aim of this study was to analyze the detection rate of rare pathogens in bone and joint infections (BJIs) using metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS), and the impact of mNGS on clinical diagnosis and treatment. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 235 patients with BJIs who were treated at our hospital between January 2015 and December 2021. Patients were divided into the no-mNGS group (microbial culture only) and the mNGS group (mNGS testing and microbial culture) based on whether mNGS testing was used or not. Results: A total of 147 patients were included in the no-mNGS group and 88 in the mNGS group. The mNGS group had a higher detection rate of rare pathogens than the no-mNGS group (21.6% vs 10.2%, p = 0.016). However, the mNGS group had lower rates of antibiotic-related complications, shorter hospital stays, and higher infection control rates compared with the no-mNGS group (p = 0.017, p = 0.003, and p = 0.028, respectively), while there was no significant difference in the duration of antibiotic use (p = 0.957). In culture-negative cases, the mNGS group had lower rates of antibiotic-related complications, shorter hospital stays, and a higher infection control rate than the no-mNGS group (p = 0.036, p = 0.033, p = 0.022, respectively), while there was no significant difference in the duration of antibiotic use (p = 0.748). Conclusion: mNGS improves detection of rare pathogens in BJIs. mNGS testing reduces antibiotic-related complications, shortens hospital stay and antibiotic use duration, and improves treatment success rate, benefits which are particularly evident in culture-negative cases. Abstract Objective This study aimed to develop a culturally adapted Chinese version of the Value-based Stigma Inventory (VASI) and to evaluate its psychometric properties, including reliability and validity, among the general Chinese population. Methods This study is a cross-sectional study. Convenience sampling was used to recruit 708 general citizens from Shenyang City, Liaoning Province, China. The VASI’s internal consistency, split-half reliability, and test–retest reliability were tested to assess the translated scale’s reliability. Several validity tests were performed, including expert consultation, exploratory factor analysis, and confirmatory factor analysis. Data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, United States) and AMOS 23.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, United States). Results The Chinese version of the VASI showed good reliability, with a Cronbach’s α value of 0.808, and the dimensions ranged from 0.812 to 0.850. Test–retest reliability showed good temporal stability with a value of 0.855, and the split-half reliability value was 0.845, indicating a high degree of consistency. The scale also demonstrated good content validity with a content validity index of 0.952. After conducting exploratory factor analysis, a five-factor structure was identified, including factors of self-realization, personal enrichment, reputation, meritocratic values, and security. In the confirmatory factor analysis, all recommended fit indicators were found to be within the acceptable range, including χ2/DF = 1.338, GFI = 0.960, AGFI = 0.940, RMSEA = 0.031, TLI = 0.985, CFI = 0.989, IFI = 0.989, PGFI = 0.640, and PNFI = 0.729. Conclusion The Chinese version of the VASI is valid and reliable among the Chinese general public. The five-factor structured scale effectively assessed public stigma against mental illness, including the value orientations associated with personal stigma. Given the harsh and widespread public stigma against mental illness, the findings from the questionnaire may inform the development of future public health education programs. Public health education is needed to reduce the stigma of mental illness, increase public awareness of mental health issues, and mitigate the continued stigmatization of mental illness.

Objective The management of the infrapatellar fat pad (IPFP) during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) remains controversial. This study aimed to evaluate a novel IPFP preservation technique—“the medially pedicled IPFP flap”—for reducing postoperative pain, wound complications, and improving functional recovery after TKA. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on TKA cases at our institution from 2018 to 2021, including those with IPFP preservation (medially pedicled flap) versus IPFP complete resection. Patient demographics, perioperative parameters (blood loss, operative time, length of hospital stay, visual analogue scale [VAS] score, white cell count [WBC], C‐reactive protein [CRP], erythrocyte sedimentation rate [ESR], and wound oozing), and postoperative follow‐up data (VAS, Knee Society [KSS], or Knee Society functional assessment [KSFA] scores) were compared between groups. Independent sample t‐tests were used to compare continuous data and chi‐squared tests were used to compare categorical data between groups. Results Six hundred thirty patients were included, with 278 in the medial pedicled IPFP flap group (preservation group) and 352 in the IPFP resection group (resection group). In this paper, an active set recognition technique is suggested, and then a modified nonmonotonic line search rule is presented to enhance the efficiency of the nonmonotonic line search rule, in which we introduce a new parameter formula to attempt to control the nonmonotonic degree of the line search, and thus improve the chance of discovering the global minimum. By using a modified linear search and an active set recognition technique, a global convergence gradient solution for nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) based on an alternating nonnegative least squares framework is proposed. We used a Barzilai-Borwein step size and greater step-size tactics to speed up the convergence. Finally, a large number of numerical experiments were carried out on synthetic and image datasets, and the results showed that our presented method was effective in calculating the speed and solution quality.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the value of low-dose dual-input computed tomography perfusion (CTP) imaging in the differential diagnosis of benign and malignant pulmonary ground-glass opacity nodules (GGO). A retrospective study was conducted in patients with GGO who underwent CTP in our hospital from January 2021 to October 2023. All nodules were confirmed via pathological analysis or disappeared during follow-up. Postprocessing analysis was conducted using the dual-input perfusion mode (pulmonary artery and bronchial artery) of the body perfusion software to measure the perfusion parameters of the pulmonary GGOs. The complete chloroplast genome sequence of Sassafras randaiense (Hayata) Rehder, 1920, a subtropical tree in the family Lauraceae, was determined. For a better understanding of the differences between S. randaiense and S. tzumu, the complete chloroplast genome of S. randaiense was sequenced and analyzed. The complete chloroplast genome is 151,781 bp in length, consisting of a pair of inverted repeat (IR) regions of 20,114 bp, one large single-copy (LSC) region of 92,740 bp, and one small single-copy (SSC) region of 18,813 bp. The overall GC content of the complete chloroplast genome is 39.2%. Further, maximum-likelihood phylogenetic analysis was conducted using 31 complete plastome sequences, which support that S. randaiense and S. tzumu are nested among the members of Cinnamomum, suggesting that Sassafras belongs to Cinnamomum.

Abstract Background Following spinal cord injury (SCI), the inflammatory storm initiated by microglia/macrophages poses a significant impediment to the recovery process. Exosomes play a crucial role in the transport of miRNAs, facilitating essential cellular communication through the transfer of genetic material. However, the miRNAs from iPSC-NSCs-Exos and their potential mechanisms leading to repair after SCI remain unclear. This study aims to explore the role of iPSC-NSCs-Exos in microglia/macrophage pyroptosis and reveal their potential mechanisms. Methods iPSC-NSCs-Exos were characterized and identified using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA), and Western blot. A mouse SCI model and a series of in vivo and in vitro experiments were conducted to investigate the therapeutic effects of iPSC-NSCs-Exos. Subsequently, miRNA microarray analysis and rescue experiments were performed to confirm the role of miRNAs in iPSC-NSCs-Exos in SCI. Mechanistic studies were carried out using Western blot, luciferase activity assays, and RNA-ChIP. Results Our findings revealed that iPSC-NSCs-derived exosomes inhibited microglia/macrophage pyroptosis at 7 days post-SCI, maintaining myelin integrity and promoting axonal growth, ultimately improving mice motor function. The miRNA microarray showed let-7b-5p to be highly enriched in iPSC-NSCs-Exos, and LRIG3 was identified as the target gene of let-7b-5p. Through a series of rescue experiments, we uncovered the connection between iPSC-NSCs and microglia/macrophages, revealing a novel target for treating SCI. Conclusion In conclusion, we discovered that iPSC-NSCs-derived exosomes can package and deliver let-7b-5p, regulating the expression of LRIG3 to ameliorate microglia/macrophage pyroptosis and enhance motor function in mice after SCI. This highlights the potential of combined therapy with iPSC-NSCs-Exos and let-7b-5p in promoting functional recovery and limiting inflammation following SCI.

Abstract Background Subtype diagnosis of primary aldosteronism (PA) is used to determine treatment, and the potential utility of 68Ga-pentixafor PET/CT for investigation of PA has long been recognized. The study aimed to evaluate the clinical value of 68Ga-pentixafor PET/CT in the diagnosis and prognosis of patients with bilateral lesions identified by CT. Methods In total, 25 patients with PA and bilateral lesions on CT were retrospectively evaluated. All patients underwent 68Ga-Pentixafor PET/CT and adrenal vein sampling. The analysis focused on establishing the relationship between bilateral adrenal lesions SUVmax and the ratio of bilateral adrenal lesions SUVmax (CON) and clinical diagnosis, treatment outcomes, and KCNJ5 gene status. Results The concordance rate between 68Ga-Pentixafor PET/CT and adrenal venous sampling was 65.2% (15/23). The lateralization results of 68Ga-pentixafor PET/CT supported the clinical decisions of 20 patients with PA, 90% of whom showed effectiveness in treatment. The SUVmax on the dominant side of the surgically treated patients was higher than that of patients treated with drugs. The SUVmax of the KCNJ5 mutant group was higher than that of the KCNJ5 wild group, and 68Ga-Pentixafor uptake was correlated with KCNJ5 gene status. Conclusions 68Ga-Pentixafor PET/CT proves beneficial for patients with PA with bilateral lesions on CT. The treatment is generally effective based on the results of PET lateralization. Simultaneously, a certain relationship exists between 68Ga-Pentixafor PET/CT and KCNJ5 gene status, warranting further analysis.

Limited cells and factors, inadequate mechanical properties, and necrosis of defects center have hindered the wide clinical application of bone-tissue engineering scaffolds. Herein, we construct a self-oxygenated 3D printed bioactive hydrogel scaffold by integrating oxygen-generating nanoparticles and hybrid double network hydrogel structure. The hydrogel scaffold possesses the characteristics of extracellular matrix; Meanwhile, the fabricated hybrid double network structure by polyacrylamide and CaCl2-crosslinked sodium carboxymethylcellulose endows the hydrogel favorable compressive strength and 3D printability. Furthermore, the O2 generated by CaO2 nanoparticles encapsulated in ZIF-8 releases steadily and sustainably because of the well-developed microporous structure of ZIF-8, which can significantly promote cell viability and proliferation in vitro, as well as angiogenesis and osteogenic differentiation with the assistance of Zn2+. More significantly, the synergy of O2 and 3D printed pore structure can prevent necrosis of defects center and facilitate cell infiltration by providing cells the nutrients and space they need, which can further induce vascular network ingrowth and accelerate bone regeneration in all areas of the defect in vivo. Overall, this work provides a new avenue for preparing cell/factor-free bone-tissue engineered scaffolds that possess great potential for tissue regeneration and clinical alternative.

Aims: To explore the clinical efficacy of using two different types of articulating spacers in two-stage revision for chronic knee periprosthetic joint infection (kPJI). Methods: A retrospective cohort study of 50 chronic kPJI patients treated with two types of articulating spacers between January 2014 and March 2022 was conducted. The clinical outcomes and functional status of the different articulating spacers were compared. Overall, 17 patients were treated with prosthetic spacers (prosthetic group (PG)), and 33 patients were treated with cement spacers (cement group (CG)). The CG had a longer mean follow-up period (46.67 months (SD 26.61)) than the PG (24.82 months (SD 16.46); p = 0.001). Results: Infection was eradicated in 45 patients overall (90%). The PG had a better knee range of motion (ROM) and Knee Society Score (KSS) after the first-stage revision (p = 0.004; p = 0.002), while both groups had similar ROMs and KSSs at the last follow-up (p = 0.136; p = 0.895). The KSS in the CG was significantly better at the last follow-up (p = 0.013), while a larger percentage (10 in 17, 58.82%) of patients in the PG chose to retain the spacer (p = 0.008). Conclusion: Prosthetic spacers and cement spacers are both effective at treating chronic kPJI because they encourage infection control, and the former improved knee function status between stages. Abstract Objective The thickness of the lateral femoral wall, which is an important indicator for evaluating the stability and integrity of intertrochanteric fractures, has been widely studied in recent years. However, as a typical representative of internal fixation treatment, there are few reports on the biomechanical comparison between PFNA and DHS + CS. This study focused primarily on the biomechanical effects of different lateral femoral wall thicknesses on two types of internal fixation through finite element analysis. Methods We randomly recruited a healthy adult and collected his femoral CT data to establish a model of femoral intertrochanteric fracture with different lateral femoral wall thicknesses. Following PFNA and DHS + CS fixation, femoral models were simulated, and variations in stress and displacement of the internal fixation and femoral head were recorded under the same physiological load. Results First, finite element mechanical analysis revealed that the stress and displacement of the internal fixation and femoral head were lower in the femoral model after PFNA fixation than in the DHS + CS model. Second, as the outer wall thickness decreased, the stress and deformation endured by both types of internal fixation gradually increased. Conclusions Finite element analysis determined that PFNA exhibits significantly better biomechanical stability than DHS + CS when subjected to varying lateral femoral wall thicknesses. Moreover, lateral femoral wall thickness substantially affects the stability of the two internal fixation biomechanical environments. When the thickness of the lateral femoral wall is too small, we do not recommend using extramedullary fixation because there is a significant risk of internal fixation fracture.

Service-oriented third-party e-commerce platforms have emerged as a new trend in the manufacturing industry. This paper aims to investigate the platforms’ value-added service (VAS) and charging strategies with a dynamic evolution analysis. Considering the change in the user numbers and characteristics of the e-commerce industry, this paper proposes a system dynamics model composed of multi-value chains and a third-party e-commerce platform. The simulation results indicate that the platform should reduce VAS investment and appropriately increase the VAS fee in the early development period. After the number of users stabilizes, the platform should appropriately increase its VAS investment and reduce the VAS fee. When the VAS fee is low, the platform profit first increases and then decreases as the VAS level increases. Differently, the platform profit will first decrease, then increase, and finally decrease as the VAS level improves when the VAS fee is low. This paper further finds that the strong cross-network effect of manufacturers is not always beneficial to the platform.

BackgroundMisinformation is a threat to public health. The effective countering of misinformation may require moving beyond the binary classification of fake versus fact to capture the range of schemas that users employ to evaluate social media content. A more comprehensive understanding of user evaluation schemas is necessary. ObjectiveThe goal of this research was to advance the current understanding of user evaluations of social media information and to develop and validate a measurement instrument for assessing social media realism. MethodsThis research involved a sequence of 2 studies. First, we used qualitative focus groups (n=48). Second, building on the first study, we surveyed a national sample of social media users (n=442). The focus group data were analyzed using the constant comparison approach. The survey data were analyzed using confirmatory factor analyses and ordinary least squares regression. ResultsThe findings showed that social media reality evaluation involves 5 dimensions: falsity, naturality, authenticity, resonance, and social assurance. Objective Fitness technologies, such as smartphone applications and wearable tracking devices, have gained widespread popularity. This study had two main objectives: 1) to examine whether fitness technology use is associated with increased physical activity (PA) levels and 2) to investigate whether communication behaviors on social media mediated the association between fitness technology use and PA. Methods Data were from the U.S. Health Information National Trends Survey 2022 ( N = 6,252, weighted N = 258,418,467). Weighted linear regressions were conducted to examine the associations between fitness technology usage, physical activities, and communication behaviors on social media. Mediations were tested using PROCESS macro, a path-analysis based tool. Self-sensing adaptability is a high-level intelligence in living creatures and is highly desired for their biomimetic soft robots for efficient interaction with the surroundings. Self-sensing adaptability can be achieved in soft robots by the integration of sensors and actuators. However, current strategies simply assemble discrete sensors and actuators into one robotic system and, thus, dilute their synergistic and complementary connections, causing low-level adaptability and poor decision-making capability. Here, inspired by vertebrate animals supported by highly evolved backbones, we propose a concept of a bionic spine that integrates sensing and actuation into one shared body based on the reversible piezoelectric effect and a decoupling mechanism to extract the environmental feedback. We demonstrate that the soft robots equipped with the bionic spines feature locomotion speed improvements between 39.5% and 80% for various environmental terrains. More importantly, it can also enable the robots to accurately recognize and actively adapt to changing environments with obstacle avoidance capability by learning-based gait adjustments. We envision that the proposed bionic spine could serve as a building block for locomotive soft robots toward more intelligent machine-environment interactions in the future.

Abstract Tai Chi serves as an effective exercise modality for enhancing autonomic regulation. However, a majority of existing studies have employed the single routine (SR) protocol as the basis for health interventions. The extent to which the gong routine application (GRA) protocol achieves similar levels of exercise load stimulation as traditional single practice routines remains uncertain. Therefore, this study the distinct characteristics of autonomic load stimulation in these different protocols, thus providing a biological foundation to support the development of Tai Chi health promotion intervention programs. we recruited a cohort of forty-five university students to participate in the 15 min GRA protocol and SR protocol. We collected heart rate and heart rate variability indicators during periods of rest, GRA protocol, and SR protocol utilizing the Polar Scale. Additionally, we assessed the mental state of the participants using the BFS State of Mind Scale. In summary, the autonomic load is lower in the GRA protocol compared to the SR protocol, with lower sympathetic activity but higher parasympathetic activity in the former. Results are specific to college students, additional research is necessary to extend support for frail older adults. It is advised to incorporate GRA protocol alongside SR protocol in Tai Chi instruction. This approach is likely to enhance Tai Chi skills and yield greater health benefits.

Abstract Background Concurrent chemoradiation is the standard treatment for advanced cervical cancer. However some patients still have a poor prognosis, and currently, there is no effective treatment for recurrence. In recent years, 125I seed implantation therapy has emerged as a treatment for advanced malignant tumors including surgically unresectable tumors, residual tumors after surgical resection, and metastatic tumors. However, the use of 125I seeds implantation in primary advanced cervical cancer has not been reported. In this study, we present a case of stage IIIB cervical cancer in a patient who had poor response to radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Subsequently, a radical hysterectomy was performed, and 125I radioactive seeds were successfully implanted during the surgery. This effectively controlled the lesions that were resistant to radiotherapy and had the potential to improve the prognosis. Case presentation A 56-year-old woman was diagnosed with stage IIIB (FIGO 2009) IIIC1r (FIGO 2018) squamous carcinoma of the cervix. After receiving 4 cycles of platinum-based chemotherapy and 30 rounds of radiotherapy, she underwent a radical hysterectomy. The localized cervical lesions were reduced, but there was no reduction in the size of the enlarged pelvic lymph nodes. Therefore, 125I seed implantation was performed under direct surgical vision for the right paracervical lesion and the enlarged pelvic lymph nodes on the right side. During the 18-month follow-up period, the enlarged lymph nodes subsided without any signs of recurrence or metastasis. Conclusion Intraoperative implantation of 125I seeds in lesions that are difficult to control with radiotherapy or in sites at high risk of recurrence is a feasible and effective treatment option for patients with advanced squamous cervical cancer, and it may contribute to improved survival.

Abstract Purpose To investigate the effects of vitrectomy and intravitreal dexamethasone (DEX) implantation on retinal biomarkers in patients with advanced idiopathic epiretinal membrane (IERM) and to evaluate this treatment’s anatomical and functional outcomes. Methods This retrospective study included 41 patients with advanced IERM who underwent vitrectomy and were divided into a pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) group (20 eyes) and a dexamethasone (DEX) group (21 eyes) based on intravitreal DEX implantation. We collected data on best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central macular thickness (CMT), disorganization of the retinal inner layers (DRIL), subretinal fluid, intraretinal cystoid changes (IRC), integrity of the inner-outer segment layer, and intraocular pressure. Results BCVA improved significantly in both groups; the DEX group had a higher visual acuity gain at 1 and 6 months (P = 0.002 and 0.023, respectively). Postoperative CMT gradually decreased in both groups, with the DEX group showing a greater decrease at 1 and 6 months (P = 0.009 and 0.033, respectively). Six months after surgery, the DRIL and IRC grades in the DEX group were significantly improved compared to those in the PPV group (P = 0.037 and 0.038, respectively). Multivariate regression analyses revealed that patients with intraoperative DEX implants were more likely to have a significant CMT reduction (≥ 100 μm) from baseline (odds ratio (OR), 9.44; 95% confidence intervals (CI), 1.58–56.56; P = 0.014) at 6 months and less likely to exhibit DRIL at 6 months postoperatively (OR, 0.08; 95% CI, 0.01–0.68; P = 0.021). Conclusion Vitrectomy combined with intravitreal DEX implantation facilitates the recovery of postoperative visual acuity and improvement of anatomical outcomes in patients with advanced IERM, effectively reducing CMT and improving DRIL.

Highlights Based on Fe-Hpdca-PDMS and carbon nanotube composite, an optoacoustic patch is developed, which can recover from the damage induced by cutting or laser irradiation at room temperature. The patch has high laser damage threshold (183.44 mJ cm−2) and optoacoustic energy conversion efficiency (10.66×10−3). The patch has been successfully examined in acoustic flow, thrombolysis, and wireless energy harvesting, which may provide new insights into the field of the design and fabrication of novel ultrasound devices for biomedical applications.

Abstract Background Clinical guidelines recommend a preoperative forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) of > 2 L as an indication for left or right pneumonectomy. This study compares the safety and long-term prognosis of pneumonectomy for destroyed lung (DL) patients with FEV1 ≤ 2 L or > 2 L. Methods A total of 123 DL patients who underwent pneumonectomy between November 2002 and February 2023 at the Department of Thoracic Surgery, Beijing Chest Hospital were included. Patients were sorted into two groups: the FEV1 > 2 L group (n = 30) or the FEV1 ≤ 2 L group (n = 96). Clinical characteristics and rates of mortality, complications within 30 days after surgery, long-term mortality, occurrence of residual lung infection/tuberculosis (TB), bronchopleural fistula/empyema, readmission by last follow-up visit, and modified Medical Research Council (mMRC) dyspnea scores were compared between groups. Results A total of 96.7% (119/123) of patients were successfully discharged, with 75.6% (93/123) in the FEV1 ≤ 2 L group. As compared to the FEV1 > 2 L group, the FEV1 ≤ 2 L group exhibited significantly lower proportions of males, patients with smoking histories, patients with lung cavities as revealed by chest imaging findings, and patients with lower forced vital capacity as a percentage of predicted values (FVC%pred) (P values of 0.001, 0.027, and 0.023, 0.003, respectively). No significant intergroup differences were observed in rates of mortality within 30 days after surgery, incidence of postoperative complications, long-term mortality, occurrence of residual lung infection/TB, bronchopleural fistula/empyema, mMRC ≥ 1 at the last follow-up visit, and postoperative readmission (P > 0.05). Conclusions As most DL patients planning to undergo left/right pneumonectomy have a preoperative FEV1 ≤ 2 L, the procedure is generally safe with favourable short- and long-term prognoses for these patients. Consequently, the results of this study suggest that DL patient preoperative FEV1 > 2 L should not be utilised as an exclusion criterion for pneumonectomy.

Social animals frequently exhibit huddling sleep behaviors in response to nocturnal ecological pressures. However, there remain significant gaps in our understanding of the decision-making process promoting huddle sleep. Exploring how such decision-making processes are initiated and programmed in nonhuman primates offers additional insights into various animals, with a particular focus on humans. The present research examined the social factors and individual influences involved in initiating huddle sleep among a population of wild Tibetan macaques (Macaca thibetana) at Mt. Huangshan in Anhui, China. The results showed that social rank, age, and social centrality were involved in the decision-making process for huddle sleep. Individuals with higher rank and greater social centrality not only tended to act as leaders but also frequently took on followers. Younger individuals were more inclined to be followers. If an individual consistently followed a specific member during huddles, we referred to her/him as a fan. Individuals with more fans (fandom) and those that were consistently fans of others were also more socially central in their group. Such different selection factors fostered coordination among individuals and promoted huddle formation. The study has enhanced our understanding of nocturnal huddling behavior in social nonhuman primates and the intricate mechanisms involved in decision-making. The findings provide valuable insights into the sleep behavior of wild animals, thereby increasing our understanding of how monkeys maintain long-term survival. The analysis of sleep behavior has significant theoretical and practical implications for the conservation of Tibetan macaques.

Abstract Soft material‐based robots, known for their safety and compliance, are expected to play an irreplaceable role in human‐robot collaboration. However, this expectation is far from real industrial applications due to their complex programmability and poor motion precision, brought by the super elasticity and large hysteresis of soft materials. Here, a soft collaborative robot (Soft Co‐bot) with intuitive and easy programming by contact‐based drag teaching, and also with exceptional motion repeatability (< 0.30% of body length) and ultra‐low hysteresis (< 2.0%) is reported. Such an unprecedented capability is achieved by a biomimetic antagonistic design within a pneumatic soft robot, in which cables are threaded to servo motors through tension sensors to form a self‐sensing system, thus providing both precise actuation and dragging‐aware collaboration. Hence, the Soft Co‐bots can be first taught by human drag and then precisely repeat various tasks on their own, such as electronics assembling, machine tool installation, etc. The proposed Soft Co‐bots exhibit a high potential for safe and intuitive human‐robot collaboration in unstructured environments, promoting the immediate practical application of soft robots.

Abstract Uncontrolled crossbreeding is a major challenge to the conservation of landrace horses in East Asia. Understanding the factors driving this trend is crucial for effective conservation efforts. Here, we investigate the genomic makeup of 40 Mongolian Naadam racehorses and 21 Asian landrace horse breeds through analyzing whole‐genome resequencing and Y chromosome data. Our results show that crossbreeding practices are linked to horse‐racing traditions. Regions characterized by strong horse‐racing traditions and a lack of crossbreeding regulations exhibit significant levels of exotic genetic introgression, as observed in populations from Inner Mongolia and Central Asia. However, in Mongolia, despite having strong horse‐racing traditions, the implementation of policies aimed at preserving traditional horse‐racing culture effectively reduces exotic introgression. These results suggest that horse‐racing traditions are the main driver of crossbreeding practices. Our research highlights that the preservation of traditional values in landrace horses, achieved through carefully managed horse‐racing activities, can lead to successful conservation outcomes.

Summary: Cardiac dysfunction, an early complication of endotoxemia, is the major cause of death in intensive care units. No specific therapy is available at present for this cardiac dysfunction. Here, we show that the N-terminal gasdermin D (GSDMD-N) initiates mitochondrial apoptotic pore and cardiac dysfunction by directly interacting with cardiolipin oxidized by complex II-generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) during endotoxemia. Caspase-4/11 initiates GSDMD-N pores that are subsequently amplified by the upregulation and activation of NLRP3 inflammation through further generation of ROS. GSDMD-N pores form prior to BAX and VDAC1 apoptotic pores and further incorporate into BAX and VDAC1 oligomers within mitochondria membranes to exacerbate the apoptotic process. Our findings identify oxidized cardiolipin as the definitive target of GSDMD-N in mitochondria of cardiomyocytes during endotoxin-induced myocardial dysfunction (EIMD), and modulation of cardiolipin oxidation could be a therapeutic target early in the disease process to prevent EIMD.

A fundamental vision technique for industrial robots involves the six degrees of freedom pose estimation of target objects from a single image. However, the direct estimation of the six degrees of freedom object pose solely from a single image is subject to limited accuracy. Various refinement approaches have been proposed to improve the accuracy by utilizing rendered images from a 3D model. Nevertheless, balancing speed and accuracy in an industrial setting remains a challenge for these methods. In this study, we propose a novel six degrees of freedom pose refinement approach centered around matching real image patches. Unlike previous approaches, our method does not rely on a 3D model, resulting in increased speed and accuracy. In the offline phase, we construct an offline database using image patches obtained from real images. During the inference phase, our method initially identifies the image patch within the offline database that is closest to the initial pose. Subsequently, we refine the six degrees of freedom pose by matching the corresponding image patches from the offline database. Experimental results indicate that our six degrees of freedom pose refinement method achieves real-time capability with a frame rate of 71 Frames Per Second (FPS), along with high precision. When the threshold is set to 0.5% of the object diameter, the average distance of dots score on the test data surpasses 70%. Moreover, experiments involving gripping and assembling tasks on an industrial robot demonstrate the ability of our method to autonomously select appropriate grasping angles and positions in real time. It further generates suitable motion paths, ultimately ensuring production efficiency.

The nuclear receptor, farnesoid X receptor (FXR/NR1H4), is increasingly recognized as a promising drug target for metabolic diseases, including nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Protein-coding genes regulated by FXR are well known, but whether FXR also acts through regulation of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), which vastly outnumber protein-coding genes, remains unknown. Utilizing RNA-seq and global run-on sequencing (GRO-seq) analyses in mouse liver, we found that FXR activation affects the expression of many RNA transcripts from chromatin regions bearing enhancer features. Among these we discovered a previously unannotated liver-enriched enhancer-derived lncRNA (eRNA), termed FXR-induced non-coding RNA (Fincor). We show that Fincor is specifically induced by the hammerhead-type FXR agonists, including GW4064 and tropifexor. CRISPR/Cas9-mediated liver-specific knockdown of Fincor in dietary NASH mice reduced the beneficial effects of tropifexor, an FXR agonist currently in clinical trials for NASH and primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), indicating that amelioration of liver fibrosis and inflammation in NASH treatment by tropifexor is mediated in part by Fincor. Overall, our findings highlight that pharmacological activation of FXR by hammerhead-type agonists induces a novel eRNA, Fincor, contributing to the amelioration of NASH in mice. Fincor may represent a new drug target for addressing metabolic disorders, including NASH.

Background: This study analyzed the laboratory diagnosis results and drug resistance of patients infected with non-tuberculous mycobacterium (NTM). Methods: We collected information on patients with positive indicators of NTM infection at the Henan Provincial Chest Hospital from 2020 to 2022. Acid-fast smear, mycobacterium culture, QB-SPOT assay, GeneXpert MTB/RIF assay, immunoglobulin E test, tuberculosis antibody test, and microplate method for drug sensitivity test were analyzed using strain identification as the gold standard. Results: The 242 cases of NTM infection were predominantly detected with slow-growing mycobacteria (a detection rate of 87.19%), among which Mycobacterium intracellulare (66.53%), Mycobacterium avium (15.70%), and Mycobacterium chelonei/abscessus complex (11.16%) ranked the top three in terms of the isolation rate. Males patients accounted for a higher proportion (58.26%) than females (41.74%), and the majority of them were over 60 years (50.83%). Among laboratory tests for patients with NTM infection, mycobacterium culture showed a highest detected rate (87.20%) among laboratory tests. The results of the drug sensitivity test demonstrated that the resistance rate of NTM was generally high. Moreover, the Mycobacterium avium complex with the highest isolation rate showed 100% resistant to doxycycline and minocycline, but exhibited relatively high sensitivity to moxifloxacin (a resistance rate of 7.89%) and rifabutin (a resistance rate of 13.16%). The Mycobacterium chelonei/abscessus complex was 100% resistant to doxycycline and relatively sensitive to cefoxitin (29.17%) and clarithromycin (37.50%). Conclusion: The NTM species isolated by the Henan Provincial Chest Hospital is dominated by Mycobacterium intracellulare and the highest positive rate is detected by mycobacterium culture among laboratory tests. NTM infection generally exhibits a high rate of drug resistance. Accordingly, the accurate diagnosis of NTM diseases requires enhanced drug sensitivity testing to provide patients with targeted combination drug treatment.

Abstract Background The interaction between the nervous system and the immune system can affect the outcome of a bacterial infection. Staphylococcus aureus skin infection is a common infectious disease, and elucidating the relationship between the nervous system and immune system may help to improve treatment strategies. Results In this study, we found that the local release of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) increased during S. aureus skin infection, and S. aureus could promote the release of CGRP from transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily V member 1 (TRPV1+) neurons in vitro. The existence of TRPV1+ neurons inhibited the recruitment of neutrophils to the infected region and regulated the polarization of macrophages toward M2 while inhibiting polarization toward M1. This reduces the level of inflammation in the infected area, which aggravates the local infection. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that TRPV1 may be a target for the treatment of S. aureus skin infections and that botulinum neurotoxin A (BoNT/A) and BIBN4096 may reverse the inhibited inflammatory effect of CGRP, making them potential therapeutics for the treatment of skin infection in S. aureus. Conclusions In S. aureus skin infection, TRPV1+ neurons inhibit neutrophil recruitment and regulate macrophage polarization by releasing CGRP. BoNT/A and BIBN4096 may be potential therapeutic agents for S. aureus skin infection.

With the advantages of large transmission capacity, low losses, rapid and flexible power regulation, and the ability to achieve non-synchronous networking, High Voltage Direct Current transmission systems are playing an increasingly important role in long distance transmission and grid interconnection. However, under certain circumstances, such as disturbances in the DC transmission system and sudden load changes, the converter based on PI control in DC transmission system suffer from slow response speed and poor stability. In order to improve the stability of the system and the response speed of DC voltage, this paper proposes an adaptive linear active disturbance rejection control (A-LADRC) method. The method is based on the analysis of the relationship between key bandwidth parameters and output quantities in linear active disturbance rejection control and enables adaptive adjustment of the controller bandwidth parameters for fast regulation of the DC voltage and to improve the stability of the DC voltage in the event of disturbances. Finally, the proposed control method is validated by simulation, and the results show that the proposed control method can effectively improve the response speed and robustness of the DC voltage, which has good practical engineering value.

Abstract Background Diabetic macular edema (DME) is the main cause of vision loss in diabetic patients. Currently, anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) intravitreal injection stands as the first-line therapy for DME. However, some patients exhibit insufficient response to anti-VEGF agents and often require multiple injections, imposing psychological and economic burdens. While microinvasive pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) has been shown to be safe and effective in treating refractory DME, scant research has explored its application to treatment-naïve DME. The purpose of this study is to determine whether early PPV combined with internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling can lessen the therapeutic burden of DME patients, prevent vision loss, and maintain long-term stabilization of diabetic retinopathy. Methods This is a single-center, prospective, parallel-group, non-inferiority randomized controlled trial involving 102 DME participants. Participants will be randomly assigned to either the study group (PPV combined with ILM peeling) or the control group (conbercept intravitreal injection (IVC)) at a 1:1 ratio, with a scheduled follow-up at 12 months post-operation. Comparative analysis of results between the two groups will be conducted at months 1, 3, 6, and 12 after the intervention. The primary outcomes involve evaluating the changes in central subfield thickness (CST) and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA). The secondary outcomes include assessment of optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA) biomarkers, re-treatment and adverse events rates, diabetic retinopathy (DR) development, cost-effectiveness analysis, and vision-related quality of life (VRQL). Discussion Some patients do not respond well to anti-VEGF drugs and repeated intravitreal injections increase the treatment burden for patients. The VVV study aims to explore whether PPV combined with ILM peeling could become an initial treatment option for treatment-naïve DME patients. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov NCT05728476. Abstract The interphase genome is dynamically organized in the nucleus and decorated with chromatin-associated RNA (caRNA). It remains unclear whether the genome architecture modulates the spatial distribution of caRNA and vice versa. Here, we generate a resource of genome-wide RNA-DNA and DNA-DNA contact maps in human cells. These maps reveal the chromosomal domains demarcated by locally transcribed RNA, hereafter termed RNA-defined chromosomal domains. Further, the spreading of caRNA is constrained by the boundaries of topologically associating domains (TADs), demonstrating the role of the 3D genome structure in modulating the spatial distribution of RNA. Conversely, stopping transcription or acute depletion of RNA induces thousands of chromatin loops genome-wide. Activation or suppression of the transcription of specific genes suppresses or creates chromatin loops straddling these genes. Deletion of a specific caRNA-producing genomic sequence promotes chromatin loops that straddle the interchromosomal target sequences of this caRNA. These data suggest a feedback loop where the 3D genome modulates the spatial distribution of RNA, which in turn affects the dynamic 3D genome organization.

A new species of Passaloecus Shuckard, P. birugatus Bashir & Chen, sp. nov., is described and illustrated from Yunnan Province, China. The new species can be easily distinguished from known species of Passaloecus by its very long petiole, which is distinctly longer than wide, obscure scrobal suture, propodeum rugae and striations, body punctation, and coloration. An identification key to the Oriental species of Passaloecus is given.

Abstract Objective To compare the overall efficacy of laparoscopic common bile duct exploration(LCBDE) with endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP ) after cholecystectomy. Abstract The blood-spinal cord barrier (BSCB) is a physical barrier between the blood and the spinal cord parenchyma. Current evidence suggests that the disruption of BSCB integrity after spinal cord injury can lead to secondary injuries such as spinal cord edema and excessive inflammatory response. Regulatory T (Treg) cells are effective anti-inflammatory cells that can inhibit neuroinflammation after spinal cord injury, and their infiltration after spinal cord injury exhibits the same temporal and spatial characteristics as the automatic repair of BSCB. However, few studies have assessed the relationship between Treg cells and spinal cord injury, emphasizing BSCB integrity. This study explored whether Treg affects the recovery of BSCB after SCI and the underlying mechanism. We confirmed that spinal cord angiogenesis and Treg cell infiltration occurred simultaneously after SCI. Furthermore, we observed significant effects on BSCB repair and motor function in mice by Treg cell knockout and overexpression. Subsequently, we demonstrated the presence and function of exosomes in vitro. In addition, we found that Treg cell-derived exosomes encapsulated miR-2861, and miR-2861 regulated the expression of vascular tight junction (TJs) proteins. The luciferase reporter assay confirmed the negative regulation of IRAK1 by miR-2861, and a series of rescue experiments validated the biological function of IRAKI in regulating BSCB. In summary, we demonstrated that Treg cell-derived exosomes could package and deliver miR-2861 and regulate the expression of IRAK1 to affect BSCB integrity and motor function after SCI in mice, which provides novel insights for functional repair and limiting inflammation after SCI.

A number of studies have reported that drug addiction is associated with microRNAs (miRNAs). However, the roles of plasma miRNAs in methamphetamine (METH) addicts have not been clearly explained. This study aimed to profile a panel of miRNAs as non-invasive predictive biomarkers and therapeutic targets for METH addiction. Differentially expressed miRNAs were derived from next-generation sequencing technology (NGS) and were validated by quantitative real-time PCR (RT-qPCR). The diagnostic value of specific altered miRNAs was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis and area under the curve (AUC). NGS results revealed that 63 miRNAs were significantly altered in the METH-exposed paradigm. The levels of hsa-miR-592, hsa-miR-9-3p, hsa-miR-206 and hsa-let-7b-3p were significantly elevated in the plasma of METH addicts. Hsa-miR-9-3p was a useful biomarker discriminating METH addicts from normal (AUC was 0.756). Importantly, combining detection of hsa-miR-592 and hsa-miR-9-3p achieved the highest AUC of 0.87, with a sensitivity and specificity of 82.7% and 78.9%, respectively. Target gene BDNF decreased significantly in METH addicts. Although METH addicts showed significant depressive symptoms, there was no correlation between the expression level of miR-592 and miR-9-3p and the degree of depression. Our findings suggested that hsa-miR-592, hsa-miR-9-3p, hsa-miR-206, and hsa-let-7b-3p may play a potential role in the pathology of METH addiction, and a combination of hsa-miR-592 and hsa-miR-9-3p could serve as potential peripheral biomarker and therapeutic target for METH addiction.

In this work, a two-parameter inversion problem is analyzed, related to surface crack widths for measuring depths of normal surface notches, based on a laser-based ultrasonic measurement method in the time domain. In determining the depth measurement formulas, the main technique is the time delay between reflected and scattered waves. Scattered waves are generated by two reflections along the bottom and three mode transformations at the surface of the crack tips. Moreover, the scattering angle of the mode-conversion waves is 30°. These two key factors lead to corrected item “2wβ” in the depth measurement formula. A laser-based ultrasonic experimental platform is built to generate and receive surface waves in a non-contact manner on aluminum and steel specimens with surface cracks. The depth measurement method proposed in this paper has been validated through theoretical, simulation, and experimental methods. Finally, in this paper, an effective approach for quantitatively measuring crack depths, based on laser ultrasound, using the time-domain properties of surface wave propagation is provided.

Atractomorpha lata Motschoulsky (Orthoptera: Pyrgomorphidae) has recently emerged as an important agricultural pest in China. Understanding the impact of temperature on its developmental period is crucial for predicting its population dynamics. This study systematically observed the biological characteristics of A. lata at five temperatures (16, 20, 24, 28, and 32 °C) using the age-stage, two-sex life table method. The effects of temperature on the developmental period, survival rate, and fecundity of A. lata were studied using fresh bean leaves as host. The results demonstrated that as temperature increased from 16 °C to 32 °C, the developmental period, preadult time, adult longevity, adult preoviposition period (APOP), and total preoviposition period (TPOP) significantly decreased. The developmental threshold temperatures for various stages were calculated, ranging from 10.47 °C to 13.01 °C, using the linear optimal method. As temperature increased, both the intrinsic rate of increase (r) and the finite rate of increase (λ) also increased, while the mean generation time (T) decreased. The optimal values of the net reproductive rate (R0 = 54.26 offspring), gross reproductive rate (GRR = 185.53 ± 16.94 offspring), and fecundity (169.56 ± 9.93 eggs) were observed at 24 °C. Similarly, the population trend index (I) for A. lata peaked at 24 °C (61.64). Our findings indicate that A. lata exhibits its highest population growth rate at 24 °C, providing a scientific basis for predicting its population dynamics in the field.

Understanding the influence of factors responsible for shaping community assemblage is crucial for biodiversity management and conservation. Gansu is one of the richest regions for bumblebee species in the world. We explored the distribution data of 52 bumblebee species collected in Gansu and its surroundings between 2002 and 2022, predicting habitat suitability based on 17 environmental variables using MaxEnt. The factors influencing community assemblage were assessed using canonical correspondence analysis. Net primary productivity, water vapor pressure, temperature seasonality, annual precipitation, and precipitation seasonality were some of the most influential drivers of species distributions. Based on Ward’s agglomerative cluster analysis, four biogeographic zones are described: the Southern humid zone, the Western Qilian snow mountain zone, the Eastern Loess plateau zone, and the Western dry mountain zone. In the clusters of grid cells based on beta diversity values, the Southern humid zone comprised 42.5% of the grid cells, followed by the Eastern Loess plateau zone (32.5%), the Western dry mountain zone (20%), and the Western Qilian snow mountain zone (5%). Almost all the environmental factors showed a significant contribution to the assemblages of bumblebees of different groups. Our findings highlight the need for better data to understand species biogeography and diversity patterns, and they provide key baseline data for refining conservation strategies.

Marine anchor buoys, as fixed-point profile observation platforms, are highly susceptible to the threat of ship collisions. Installing cameras on buoys can effectively monitor and collect evidence from ships. However, when using a camera to capture images, it is often affected by the continuous shaking of buoys and rainy and foggy weather, resulting in problems such as blurred images and rain and fog occlusion. To address these problems, this paper proposes an improved YOLOv8 algorithm. Firstly, the polarized self-attention (PSA) mechanism is introduced to preserve the high-resolution features of the original deep convolutional neural network and solve the problem of image spatial resolution degradation caused by shaking. Secondly, by introducing the multi-head self-attention (MHSA) mechanism in the neck network, the interference of rain and fog background is weakened, and the feature fusion ability of the network is improved. Finally, in the head network, this model combines additional small object detection heads to improve the accuracy of small object detection. Additionally, to enhance the algorithm’s adaptability to camera detection scenarios, this paper simulates scenarios, including shaking blur, rain, and foggy conditions. In the end, numerous comparative experiments on a self-made dataset show that the algorithm proposed in this study achieved 94.2% mAP50 and 73.2% mAP50:95 in various complex environments, which is superior to other advanced object detection algorithms.

Summary: Overactivation of osteoclasts due to altered osteoclastogenesis causes multiple bone metabolic diseases. However, how osteoclast differentiation is tightly regulated and involved in multiple pathophysiological states remains mystery. In this study, we noticed that the downregulation of BHLHE41 (basic-helix-loop-helix family member e41) was tightly associated with osteoclast differentiation and osteoporosis. Functionally, the upregulation or downregulation of BHLHE41 suppressed or promoted osteoclast differentiation, respectively, in vitro. A mechanism study indicated that the direct binding of BHLHE41 to the promoter region of NFATc1 that led to its downregulation. Notably, the inhibition of NFATc1 abrogated the enhanced osteoclast differentiation in BHLHE41-knockdown bone marrow macrophages (BMMs). Additionally, upregulation of BHLHE41 impeded bone destruction in OVX mice with osteoporosis. Therefore, our research reveals the mechanism by which BHLHE41 regulates osteoclast differentiation and bone resorption via NFATc1, and targeting BHLHE41 is a potential strategy for the treatment of osteoporosis.

This study investigates the association between social media use and attitudes toward AI technologies. A nationally representative two-wave longitudinal survey (N=5110) examined the mediating roles of perceived AI fairness and threat concerning three AI technologies: algorithms, facial recognition technology, and driverless passenger vehicles. Hypotheses were derived from media effect theories and the heuristic and systematic model of human-AI adoption. The results showed that social media use predicted more positive attitudes toward the three AI technologies indirectly through increased perceived AI fairness and reduced perceived AI threat. The findings contribute to our understanding of social media effects on attitudes toward AI and the underlying psychological mechanisms, providing valuable theoretical insights and practical implications.

Propagation of generalized multi-Gaussian correlated Schell-model (GMGCSM) beams through four-level electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) atomic vapor is investigated for the first time. Analytical expression for the GMGCSM beam passing through an ABCD optical system of EIT vapor is deduced and employed to analyze its propagation properties. It is demonstrated that intensity evolution of the targeted GMGCSM beam through EIT atomic vapor is dependent on the coupling Rabi frequency of the control light, the beam index and coherence length. Moreover, analysis shows that degree of coherence of the beam can also be regulated by the coupling Rabi frequency. Additionally, it is shown that, selecting appropriate coherence length, GMGCSM beams of the first kind would form a shift from a dark-centered distribution known as “optical cage”, to a peak-centered distribution; GMGCSM beams of the second kind would shift from a flat-topped distribution to a Gaussian distribution. Therefore, EIT atomic vapor provides a method to regulate the coherence of partially coherent beams. Results obtained here could be expected applications in free-space optical communications, material thermal processing, and optical trapping.

Abstract Disease activity evaluation is important in Crohn's disease (CD). We aimed to establish new disease activity indices for CD based on noninvasive parameters. The data of 110 patients with CD were retrospectively analyzed. Parameters from bowel ultrasound and biomarkers were measured to select the variables included in the models by univariate analysis. Logistic regression analysis was performed to predict mucosal and transmural activities defined by ileocolonoscopy or computed tomography enterography, respectively. The models' performance was measured by the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC). Leave‐one‐out cross validation (LOOCV) was applied to adjust for overconfidence in the newly established score models. To predict mucosal activity, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and (LimG × BWT)‐SUM (the sum of the product of Limberg grade [LimG] and bowel wall thickness [BWT] of each bowel segment) were selected for model A, and the equation was A = 2 × ESR + 9.3 × (LimG × BWT)‐SUM. The AUC of ROC, sensitivity, and specificity were 0.927%, 89.8%, and 86.4%, respectively. The AUC of the ROC curve verified by LOOCV was 0.913. To predict transmural activity, albumin (ALB) and LimG‐SUM (the sum of the LimG of all the bowel segments) were selected for model B, which was established as B = −1.3 × ALB +1.7 × LimG‐SUM. The AUC of ROC, sensitivity, and specificity were 0.851%, 78.0%, and 84.2%, respectively. The AUC of the ROC curve verified by LOOCV was 0.833. Nomograms were developed for two score models. New score models based on noninvasive parameters established in this study showed good abilities in detecting active disease and performed well in the validation phase.

Abstract Background Radiotherapy (RT) is one of the most mainstream cancer therapeutic modalities. However, due to the lack of specificity of the radiation adopted, both normal and cancerous cells are destroyed indiscriminately. This highlights the crucial need to improve radiosensitization. This study aims to address this issue by constructing a multifunctional nanospheres that can sensitize multiple aspects of radiotherapy. Results Nanospheres containing high atomic element Bi can effectively absorb ionizing radiation and can be used as radiosensitizers. Cell viability after Bi2S3 + X-ray treatment was half that of X-ray treatment alone. On the other hand, exposed 3-bromopyruvate (3BP) could reduce the overactive oxygen (O2) metabolism of tumor cells and alleviate tumor hypoxia, thereby promoting radiation-induced DNA damage. The combination index (CI) of 3BP and Bi2S3-based RT in Bi2S3-3BP + X-ray was determined to be 0.46 with the fraction affected (f a) was 0.5 via Chou-Talalay’s isobolographic method, which indicated synergistic effect of 3BP and Bi2S3-based RT after integration into Bi2S3-3BP + X-ray. Under the combined effect of 3BP and RT, autophagy was over-activated through starvation-induced and redox homeostasis dysregulation pathways, which in turn exhibited pro-death effects. In addition, the prepared nanospheres possess strong X-ray attenuation and high near-infrared (NIR) optical absorption, thus eliminating the need for additional functional components and could serve as bimodal contrast agents for computed tomography/photoacoustic (CT/PA) imaging. Conclusions The rational design of multifunctional nanospheres with the unique properties provided a novel strategy to achieving high therapeutic efficacy in RT. This was accomplished through simultaneous activation of multiple sensitization pathways by increasing ionizing radiation, reducing tumor oxygen consumption, inducing pro-death autophagy, and providing multiple-imaging guidance/monitoring.

The multi-frequency noisy vibration of an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) is a significant factor affecting the performance of shear probes mounted on the head of AUVs. Many efforts have been made to suppress mechanical radiation noise; however, conventional noise reduction methods have their limitations, such as mode mixing. In order to extract thorough information from the aliasing modes and achieve multi-frequency mode targeted correction, a multi-frequency noise reduction method is proposed, based on secondary decomposition and the multi-mode coherence correction algorithm. Weak impulses in aliasing shear mode are enhanced, and mixing frequencies are isolated for thorough decomposition. Noisy mechanical vibrations in the shear modes are eliminated with the use of the acceleration modes along the identical central frequency series. The denoised modes are used to reconstruct the cleaned shear signal, and the updated spectra are aligned with the standard Nasmyth spectrum. Compared with the raw profiles, the variation in the dissipation rate estimated from the corrected shear is reduced by more than an order of magnitude.

In recent years, renewable and sustainable triboelectric nanogenerators have attracted attention due to their high energy conversion rate, and enhancing their functionality further contributes to their applicability across various fields. A pH-sensitive triboelectric nanogenerator (pH-TENG) has been prepared by electrostatic spinning technology, with anthocyanin as the pH indicator and environmentally friendly polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the substrate. Among many friction-negative materials, the pH-TENG exhibits the best combination with fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) and yields an open-circuit voltage of 62 V, a short-circuit current of 370 nA, and a transferred charge of 21.8 nC. At a frequency of 3 Hz, it can charge a 4.7 μF capacitor to 2 V within 45 s, effectively powering a thermometer. Furthermore, the presence of anthocyanin does not affect the pH-TENG’s power generation performance and enables the monitoring of a wide range of environmental pH changes, with an ΔE change of 28.8 ± 7.6. Therefore, pH-TENG prepared with environmentally friendly materials can bring new available materials to the biological and medical fields.

(1) Background: Various 3D printers are available for dental practice; however, a comprehensive accuracy evaluation method to effectively guide practitioners is lacking. This in vitro study aimed to propose an optimized method to evaluate the spatial trueness of a 3D-printed dental model made of photopolymer resin based on a special structurized dental model, and provide the preliminary evaluation results of six 3D printers. (2) Methods: A structurized dental model comprising several geometrical configurations was designed based on dental crown and arch measurement data reported in previous studies. Ninety-six feature sizes can be directly measured on this original model with minimized manual measurement errors. Six types of photo-curing 3D printers, including Objet30 Pro using the Polyjet technique, Projet 3510 HD Plus using the Multijet technique, Perfactory DDP and DLP 800d using the DLP technique, Form2 and Form3 using the SLA technique, and each printer’s respective 3D-printable dental model materials, were used to fabricate one set of physical models each. Regarding the feature sizes of the simulated dental crowns and dental arches, linear measurements were recorded. The scanned digital models were compared with the design data, and 3D form errors (including overall 3D deviation; flatness, parallelism, and perpendicularity errors) were measured. (3) Results: The lowest overall 3D deviation, flatness, parallelism, and perpendicularity errors were noted for the models printed using the Objet30 Pro (overall value: 45 μm), Form3 (0.061 ± 0.019 mm), Objet30 Pro (0.138 ± 0.068°), and Projet 3510 HD Plus (0.095 ± 0.070°), respectively. In color difference maps, different deformation patterns were observed in the printed models. The feature size proved most accurate for the Objet30 Pro fabricated models (occlusal plane error: 0.02 ± 0.36%, occlusogingival direction error: −0.06 ± 0.09%). (4) Conclusions: The authors investigated a novel evaluation approach for the spatial trueness of a 3D-printed dental model made of photopolymer resin based on a structurized dental model. This method can objectively and comprehensively evaluate the spatial trueness of 3D-printed dental models and has a good repeatability and generalizability.

A nanocomposite microneedle (ZCQ/MN) patch containing copper/zinc dual-doped mesoporous silica nanoparticles loaded with quercetin (ZCQ) was developed as a combination therapy for androgenic alopecia (AGA). The degradable microneedle gradually dissolves after penetration into the skin and releases the ZCQ nanoparticles. ZCQ nanoparticles release quercetin (Qu), copper (Cu2+) and zinc ions (Zn2+) subcutaneously to synergistically promote hair follicle regeneration. The mechanism of promoting hair follicle regeneration mainly includes the regulation of the main pathophysiological phenomena of AGA such as inhibition of dihydrotestosterone, inhibition of inflammation, promotion of angiogenesis and activation of hair follicle stem cells by the combination of Cu2+ and Zn2+ ions and Qu. This study demonstrates that the systematic intervention targeting different pathophysiological links of AGA by the combination of organic drug and bioactive metal ions is an effective treatment strategy for hair loss, which provides a theoretical basis for development of biomaterial based anti-hair loss therapy.

PurposeThis study aimed to clarify the effect of early glucocorticoid (GC) application on achieving minimal manifestation (MM) status or better in the treatment of myasthenia gravis (MG) in the early clinical phase.MethodsA retrospective analysis was performed using data from 336 patients with MG who received GC therapy from January 2015 to September 2022 in the Zhengzhou University Henan Institute of Medical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Myasthenia Gravis Biobank (ZMB). Patients were divided into two groups: the early mono-GC group (treated with GC within 6 months of MG onset) and the delayed mono-GC group.ResultsKaplan–Meier analysis showed that the early mono-GC group achieved MM status earlier and more frequently than the delayed mono-GC group (log-rank test, p = 0.0082; hazard ratio [HR], 1.66; p = 0.011). The early mono-GC group had a lower maintenance oral GC dose than the delayed mono-GC group. In multivariate Cox regression analysis, early mono-GC (HR, 1.50; p = 0.043), early-onset MG (EOMG) (HR, 1.74; p = 0.034), and ocular MG (OMG) (HR, 1.90; p = 0.007) were associated with MM status or better. In conclusion, early mono-GC, EOMG, and OMG were positive predictors of treatment goals. In EOMG, OMG, and acetylcholine receptor antibody-positive MG (AChR-MG) subgroups, the maintenance oral GC doses in the early mono-GC group were significantly lower than the doses in the delayed mono-GC group (p < 0.05).ConclusionEarly intervention with GC led to better long-term outcomes and reduced the necessary maintenance dose of oral GC for patients with MG. EOMG and OMG were positive predictors of MM status or better with mono-GC.
