Upon chronic stress, β-adrenergic receptor activation induces cardiac fibrosis and leads to heart failure. The small molecule compound IMM-H007 has demonstrated protective effects in cardiovascular diseases via activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). This study aimed to investigate IMM-H007 effects on cardiac fibrosis induced by β-adrenergic receptor activation. Because adenosine analogs also exert AMPK-independent effects, we assessed AMPK-dependent and -independent IMM-H007 effects in murine models of cardiac fibrosis. Continual subcutaneous injection of isoprenaline for 7 days caused cardiac fibrosis and cardiac dysfunction in mice in vivo. Dexmedetomidine had sedative and analgesic effects and did not produce significant respiratory depression at therapeutic doses. To compare the sedative and analgesic effects and safety of dexmedetomidine combined with remifentanil or sufentanil in patients undergoing liposuction. A total of 100 subjects were randomized 1:1 to two groups: Group R and Group S. First, patients were administered midazolam 0.02 mg·kg−1. Anesthesia was induced with an intravenous infusion of dexmedetomidine 1 µg kg−1 (15 min) and remifentanil 0.1 µg kg−1 min−1 (Group R) or sufentanil 0.1 µg kg−1h−1 (Group S). Anesthesia was maintained with an intravenous infusion of dexmedetomidine 1.0 µg kg−1h−1, midazolam 0.015 mg kg−1h−1, remifentanil 0.1 µg kg−1min−1 (Group R), or sufentanil 0.1 µg kg−1h−1 (Group S). Hemodynamic and respiratory changes, modified OAA/S score and BIS values, postoperative Visual Analogue Scale pain scores, satisfaction of the patient and surgical team with the procedure, and adverse events and recovery time were recorded. β-Adrenergic receptor (β-AR) overactivation is a major pathological factor associated with cardiac diseases and mediates cardiac inflammatory injury. Glibenclamide has shown anti-inflammatory effects in previous research. However, it is unclear whether and how glibenclamide can alleviate cardiac inflammatory injury induced by β-AR overactivation. In the present study, male C57BL/6J mice were treated with or without the β-AR agonist isoprenaline (ISO) with or without glibenclamide pretreatment. The results indicated that glibenclamide alleviated ISO-induced macrophage infiltration in the heart, as determined by Mac-3 staining. Consistent with this finding, glibenclamide also inhibited ISO-induced chemokines and proinflammatory cytokines expression in the heart. Moreover, glibenclamide inhibited ISO-induced cardiac fibrosis and dysfunction in mice. To reveal the protective mechanism of glibenclamide, the NLRP3 inflammasome was further analysed. ISO activated the NLRP3 inflammasome in both cardiomyocytes and mouse hearts, but this effect was alleviated by glibenclamide pretreatment. Furthermore, in cardiomyocytes, ISO increased the efflux of potassium and the generation of ROS, which are recognized as activators of the NLRP3 inflammasome. The ISO-induced increases in these processes were inhibited by glibenclamide pretreatment. Moreover, glibenclamide inhibited the cAMP/PKA signalling pathway, which is downstream of β-AR, by increasing phosphodiesterase activity in mouse hearts and cardiomyocytes. In conclusion, glibenclamide alleviates β-AR overactivation-induced cardiac inflammation by inhibiting the NLRP3 inflammasome. The underlying mechanism involves glibenclamide-mediated suppression of potassium efflux and ROS generation by inhibiting the cAMP/PKA pathway.

To evaluate changes in the sleep patterns of patients undergoing general anesthesia for maxillofacial plastic surgery. A total of 200 consecutive craniofacial plastic surgery patients were enrolled in this study. Sixteen patients who did not stay in the craniofacial ward on the night before surgery were excluded, providing a final total of 184 patients. PSQI was used to evaluate sleep quality 1 month before surgery (baseline) and on the night before surgery. According to the baseline sleep quality score, patients were assigned to the sleep disorder group (SD group, n = 51, 27.7%; PSQI score > 5) or non-sleep disorder group (NSD group, n = 133, 72.3%; PSQI score ≤ 5). The PSQI score on the night before the operation was compared with the baseline score. Amongst the total sample size, the incidence of disturbed sleep on the night before surgery was significantly higher than baseline (PSQI score > 5: 89,48.4% vs.51,27.7%, respectively, P = 0.037). Microcystins (MCs) produced by some cyanobacteria can cause toxicity in animals and humans. In recent years, growing evidence suggests that MCs can act as endocrine disruptors. This research systematically investigated effects of microcystin-LR (MC-LR) on endocrine organs, biosynthesis of hormones and positive/negative feedback on the endocrine system in rats. Male, Sprague-Dawley rats were acutely administrated MC-LR by a single intraperitoneal injection at doses of 45, 67.5 or 90 μg MC-LR/kg body mass (bm), and then euthanized 24 h after exposure. In exposed rats, histological damage of hypothalamus, pituitary, adrenal, testis and thyroid were observed. Serum concentrations of corticotropin-releasing hormone, adrenocorticotropic hormone and corticosterone, expressions of genes and proteins for biosynthesis of hormones were less, which indicated an overall suppression of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Along the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, lesser concentrations of gonadotropin-releasing hormone and testosterone (T), but greater concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and estradiol (E2) were observed. Except for greater transcription of cyp19a1 in testes, transcriptions of genes and proteins for T and E2 biosynthesis along the HPG axis were lesser. As for the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis, after MCs treatment, greater concentrations of thyroid-stimulating hormone, but lesser concentrations of free tri-iodothyronine (fT3) were observed in serum. Concentrations of free tetra-iodothyronine (fT4) were greater in rats dosed with 45 μg MCs/kg, bm, but lesser in rats dosed with 67.5 or 90 μg MCs/kg, bm. Transcripts of genes for biosynthesis of hormones and receptors along the HPT axis and expressions of proteins for biosynthesis of T4 and T3 in thyroid were significantly altered. Cross-talk among the HPA, HPG and HPT axes probably occurred. It was concluded that MCs caused an imbalance of positive and negative feedback of hormonal regulatory axes, blocked biosynthesis of key hormones and exhibited endocrine-disrupting effects.

Background: The present study aimed to explore the potential effect of combining anisodamine with neostigmine on local scar formation following Roux-en-Y choledochojejunostomy (RCJS) in a novel rat model.Methods: The biliary obstruction model of Sprague Dawley (SD) rats was established in advance, and 54 rats were divided into nine groups randomly (sham operation group, anisodamine group, neostigmine group, combination group, and control group). Anisodamine (25 mg/kg) and neostigmine (50 μg/kg) were injected to the abdominal cavity separately or simultaneously for 1 week since the first day after surgery according to their allocated intervention, while the same amount of saline (0.5 ml) was injected intraperitoneally in the control group. Indexes including body weight, the diameter of the common bile duct, liver function, inflammatory indexes, and the condition of scar formation in different groups at certain time were evaluated in our study.Results: Recovery of liver function (ALT, AST, TB, DB, and GGT) and systematic inflammation indexes (CRP, TNF-α, and IL-1β) in the combination group was prior to that in the control group (p < 0.05), while no statistical difference in the serum level of IL-10 was observed among groups. Rats in the combination group represented a wider anastomotic diameter and lower expression of α-SMA and TGF-β1 at anastomotic stoma compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Histopathological staining showed slighter proliferation of collagen and smooth muscle fibers in rats’ bile duct wall and less local scar formation at anastomotic stoma compared to the control group.Conclusion: The combination of anisodamine and neostigmine can alleviate local and systemic inflammatory response, promote the recovery of liver function, and reduce scar formation in rats after the RCJS procedure.

Acute sympathetic stress causes excessive secretion of catecholamines and induces cardiac injuries, which are mainly mediated by β-adrenergic receptors (β-ARs). However, α1-adrenergic receptors (α1-ARs) are also expressed in the heart and are activated upon acute sympathetic stress. In the present study, we investigated whether α1-AR activation induced cardiac inflammation and the underlying mechanisms. Male C57BL/6 mice were injected with a single dose of α1-AR agonist phenylephrine (PE, 5 or 10 mg/kg, s.c.) with or without pretreatment with α-AR antagonist prazosin (5 mg/kg, s.c.). PE injection caused cardiac dysfunction and cardiac inflammation, evidenced by the increased expression of inflammatory cytokine IL-6 and chemokines MCP-1 and MCP-5, as well as macrophage infiltration in myocardium. These effects were blocked by prazosin pretreatment. Furthermore, PE injection significantly increased the expression of NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) and the cleavage of caspase-1 (p20) and interleukin-18 in the heart; similar results were observed in both Langendorff-perfused hearts and cultured cardiomyocytes following the treatment with PE (10 μM). Moreover, PE-induced NLRP3 inflammasome activation and cardiac inflammation was blocked in Nlrp3-/- mice compared with wild-type mice. In conclusion, α1-AR overactivation induces cardiac inflammation by activating NLRP3 inflammasomes.

Background and Aims. Hydrotalcite plays an important role in the therapy of gastric ulcer induced by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), but little is known about the mechanism. We designed two experiments to study the preventive and curative effects of hydrotalcite on NSAIDs-related gastric injury in rats and to investigate the relationship between the protective and curative mechanism of hydrotalcite and the secretion of epidermal growth factor (EGF)/prostaglandin E2 (PGE2).Methods. Two experiments were separately designed to evaluate the preventive and curative effects of hydrotalcite. A total of 25 male rats and 25 female rats were randomly divided into five groups (vehicle group, model group, omeprazole group, hydrotalcite group, and ranitidine group) in each experiment. Rats were treated with indomethacin by gavage to build the model of acute gastric mucosal injury. The concentrations of EGF and PGE2 in blood specimens and mucosal injury indexes by gross inspection were measured and an immunohistochemical technique was also employed to test the levels of EGF, cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1), and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in gastric mucosa.Results. Comparing with model group in both preventive and curative experiments, hydrotalcite decreased the gastric injury in the mucosa of stomach significantly (7±4.5 vs. 16±11.25, 1.5±2 vs. 2.5±6;P, PPPP, PConclusions. Hydrotalcite promotes gastric protection and healing via several mechanisms, including increased levels of PGE2 in blood serum, activation of EGF, and antagonising the inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX) caused by NSAIDs.

Granzyme B-producing B cells have been reportedly reported to be an important regulatory B cell subset in the pathogenesis of many diseases. However, its role in liver transplant recipients with acute rejection has never been well elucidated. Seventeen liver transplant recipients with acute rejection and 25 controls with stable liver function were enrolled in this study to determine the function of granzyme B-producing B cells via flow cytometry. Liver transplant recipients with acute rejection had higher expression of granzyme B in CD19+B cells when compared with controls. Following rejection, the granzyme B production was even elevated although comparison failed to reach significance. The percentages of CD27+granzyme B+CD19+B cells and CD138+granzyme B+CD19+B cells were lower than those of CD27-granzyme B+CD19+B cells and CD138-granzyme B+CD19+B cells in patients with acute rejection, respectively. While the production of CD27 and CD138 was not different between liver transplant recipients with and without acute rejection but increased expression of the two surface markers was observed following rejection. Furthermore, the frequency of granzyme B+CD19+B cells correlated with the level of alanine aminotransferase instead of tacrolimus. CD19+B cells could produce granzyme B when stimulated with IgG + IgM and CpG in the presence of the supernatant of activated CD4+CD25-T cells. In return, granzyme B+CD19+B cells could suppress the proliferation of CD4+CD25-T cells in a granzyme B- and contact-dependent manner. The increased expression of granzyme B in CD19+B cells from liver transplant recipients with acute rejection might function as a feedback loop for the activation of the CD4+CD25-T cells.

Background: Little is known about the shift of circulating lymphocyte subsets following liver transplantation and thus, its relationship with acute rejection. Methods: Liver transplant recipients were enrolled to assess the effect of primary liver diseases, gender, age, and follow-up periods on the shift of circulating lymphocyte subsets. Moreover, patients with rejection were paired to assess the effect of the shift on rejection.Results: When compared with patients from the middle-term group (29-180 d) and the long-term group (>180 d), patients from the short-term group (< 29 d) had the lowest absolute counts of T cell subsets, NK cells and NK T cells, and the lowest percentages of T cell subsets, B cells, NK cells and NK T cells but the highest percentage of DC. However, other factors did not affect circulating lymphocyte subsets. Percentages of T cells, CD4+T cells, B cells and NK T cells were higher in patients with acute rejection while percentages of T cell subsets and NK cells decreased after anti-rejection treatment. The percentage of NK T cells was identified to be the only independent predictor for acute rejection. The predicted probability was calculated using binary logistic with the area under the curve of 0.89, which had a sensitivity of 70.6% and a specificity of 94.1% at a cut-off value of 0.69.Conclusions: Circulating lymphocyte subsets gained a global recovery over the post-transplant period, leading to a sharp rise in percentages of circulating lymphocyte subsets, which was in close relation to the occurrence of acute rejection.

The clinical course of Pneumocystis pneumonia in liver transplant recipients has not been well investigated. Therefore, we collected and analyzed the clinical, epidemiological, and molecular data from patients with Pneumocystis pneumonia as well as paired controls (Chinese Clinical Trial Registry, ChiCTR2100046028; www.chictr.org.cn). There were a total of ten patients diagnosed with Pneumocystis pneumonia containing prospectively included six patients and retrospectively collected four patients, of which seven were transferred to the surgical intensive care unit and four died. The transmission map revealed that inter-patient transmission of Pneumocystis jirovecii was impossible; P. jirovecii detection was negative in all air samples. It was positive only in one sample from the twelve healthcare workers who had close contact with diseased patients. Five out of 79 liver transplant recipients during the outbreak were colonized with Pneumocystis jirovecii compared to 2 out of 94 after the outbreak upon admission (P>0.05). Liver transplant recipients with Pneumocystis pneumonia had totally different genotypes based on multilocus sequence typing. Additionally, we found an unreported mutation in the cytochrome b gene. The absolute CD19(+) B-cell counts (odds ratio: 1.028; 95% confidence interval: 1.000-1.057; P=0.049) were defined to be the only significant independent risk factor. At a cut-off value of 117.16/µL, the sensitivity and specificity were 100% and 70%, respectively. Pneumocystis pneumonia is a severe complication following liver transplantation. The outbreak may not be caused by nosocomial transmission. A decrease in absolute CD19(+) B-cell counts may be associated with the development of Pneumocystis pneumonia.

BACKGROUND Tolerance is more easily induced in liver transplant models than in other organs; CD8+CD45RClowregulatory T cells (Tregs) have been shown to induce tolerance in heart allografts. Whether CD8+CD45RClowTregs could induce tolerance in a liver transplant model and how dendritic cells (DCs) mediate the CD8+CD45RClowTregs effect remains to be investigated. METHODS A rat liver transplantation model was established and used to test tolerance and acute rejection compared to control groups. Liver function and histopathological changes of allograft were examined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and haematoxylin and eosin (HE P = 0.04). Significant accumulation of pDCs was observed in tolerant liver graft rats compared to that in acute-rejection rats (1.46 ± 0.23 and 0.80 ± 0.20, respectively; P = 0.02). Importantly, CD8+CD45RClowTregs were positively associated with the frequency of pDCs (P = 0.001, r2 = 0.775). The protein and mRNA expression of IL-10 and TGF-β in the allograft group were increased, possibly being responsible for tolerance induction. CONCLUSION CD8+CD45RClowT cells interact with pDCs through the induction of IL-10 and TGF-β expression and are responsible for inducing immune tolerance in rat liver transplantation.

Objective To compare the impacts of different nostril on nasotracheal intubation with video laryngoscopy.Methods Totally 120 ASA grade I maxillofacial surgery patients were equally randomized into two groups:group A(left nostril)and group B(right nostril).After rapid induction of anesthesia,the nasal intubation was completed by Tosight video laryngoscope,and the success rate of the first attempt of the tube passing through the nasal cavity was recorded and compared between these two groups.In addition,time of tube through nasal cavity,time of glottis exposure,total intubation time,intubation success rate,and nasal bleeding were recorded.Results The success rate of the first attempt of tube passing through the nasal cavity was not significantly different between groups A and B(84.7%

To explore the protective effect of Tongjingling (TJL) against sperm DNA damage and oxidative stress in the rat model of experimental varicocele (EVC).We randomly divided 75 Wistar male rats into five groups of equal number: sham operation, EVC model, high-dose TJL, mid-dose TJL, and low-dose TJL. The EVC model was established in the rats by partial ligation of the left renal vein, followed by 8 weeks of medication from the 4th week after modeling. Then we observed the general status of the rats, detected the sperm DNA fragmentation index (DFI) in the epididymis by sperm chromatin structure assay (SCSA), and measured the content of hydroperoxide (H2O2) and the activities of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the testis by colorimetry.Compared with the sham operation group, the EVC models showed significantly increased sperm DFI in the epididymis (P0.01) and elevated level of H2O2 and activities of CAT and SOD in the testis (P0.01). Unsupervised feature selection is fundamental in statistical pattern recognition, and has drawn persistent attention in the past several decades. Recently, much work has shown that feature selection can be formulated as nonlinear dimensionality reduction with discrete constraints. This line of research emphasizes utilizing the manifold learning techniques, where feature selection and learning can be studied based on the manifold assumption in data distribution. Many existing feature selection methods such as Laplacian score, SPEC (spectrum decomposition of graph Laplacian), TR (trace ratio) criterion, MSFS (multi-cluster feature selection) and EVSC (eigenvalue sensitive criterion) apply the basic properties of graph Laplacian, and select the optimal feature subsets which best preserve the manifold structure defined on the graph Laplacian. In this paper, we propose a new feature selection perspective from locally linear embedding (LLE), which is another popular manifold learning method. The main difficulty of using LLE for feature selection is that its optimization involves quadratic programming and eigenvalue decomposition, both of which are continuous procedures and different from discrete feature selection. We prove that the LLE objective can be decomposed with respect to data dimensionalities in the subset selection problem, which also facilitates constructing better coordinates from data using the principal component analysis (PCA) technique. Based on these results, we propose a novel unsupervised feature selection algorithm, called locally linear selection (LLS), to select a feature subset representing the underlying data manifold. The local relationship among samples is computed from the LLE formulation, which is then used to estimate the contribution of each individual feature to the underlying manifold structure. These contributions, represented as LLS scores, are ranked and selected as the candidate solution to feature selection. We further develop a locally linear rotation-selection (LLRS) algorithm which extends LLS to identify the optimal coordinate subset from a new space. Experimental results on real-world datasets show that our method can be more effective than Laplacian eigenmap based feature selection methods.

The active and reactive power decoupling control of photovoltaic system is analyzed in this paper. The DC-DC and DC-AC two level photovoltaic inverter model are built on the RTDS. A new type LVRT control strategy about photovoltaic system is proposed. In the symmetrical grid drop fault case, photovoltaic system output reactive power to support the grid voltage recovering and save reactive power equipment. The feasibility and effectiveness of the control strategy is verified by simulation and experiment on the RTDS.

Objective To calculate the radios of peak area of proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy metabolites in brain white matter of normal infants and young children, to observe the features of metabolite spectra, and to explore the relations between their ratio with age. Methods The peak areas of metabolites, including N-acetyl aspartate (NAA), choline (Cho), creatine (Cr), and their ratio of NAA/Cho, NAA/Cr, Cho/Cr, in paraventricular white matter of 180 normal infants and young children with different ages as evaluated by multi-voxel proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Results In paraventricular white matter, spectrum of NAA increased, and that of Cho decreased gradually, while both of them were stabilized at 2 years old. Due to the poor driving conditions, In-wheel motors of off-road vehicles may have obvious steady-state errors or dynamic errors. The straight-line running of the vehicle would have a great influence. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes a novel control algorithm. First, the types of vehicle motor errors are analyzed. Then the influence on the motor errors is studied. Using PID control method, based on the vehicle yaw rate, the torque outputs of front motors are controlled coordinately.18 DOF vehicle dynamic model is built by Simulink. The simulation results show that this proposed control strategy can improve the vehicle running deviation.

This paper reviews the basic theory and typical applications of compressed sensing, matrix rank minimization, and low-rank matrix recovery. Compressed sensing based on convex optimization and related matrix rank minimization and low-rank matrix recovery are hot research topics in recent years. They find many important and successful applications in different research fields, including signal processing, recommending system, high-dimensional data analysis, image processing, computer vision and many others. In these real applications, analysis and processing of high-dimensional data are often involved, which needs to utilize the structure of data, such as sparsity or low rank property of the data matrix, sufficiently and reasonably. Although minimization of objective functions like sparsity or matrix rank is NP-hard in the worst case, by optimizing the convex relaxation of the original objective function under certain reasonable assumptions, convex optimization could give the optimal solution of the original problem. Moreover, many efficient convex optimization algorithms could be used for solving the problem and are also applicable to large-scale problems. In this paper, we first review the fundamental theories about compressed sensing, matrix rank minimization, and low-rank matrix recovery. Then, we introduce the typical applications of these theories in image processing, computer vision, and computational photography. We also look into the future work in related research areas.

This paper explored how to make use of extended Kalman filter (EKF) technique to estimate the state of charge (SOC) of battery. Based on the equivalent circuit model of battery, a mathematical model of EKF was established, and an EKF algorithm of SOC estimation was presented. By single chip microcomputer (MCU) of MC9S12DG128, a hardware platform for experimenting with this algorithm was built up. Then this algorithm was verified by two kinds of discharge tests on the hardware in the loop platform. The test results show that this algorithm is able to satisfy the requirement of SOC estimation. It has a high accuracy, and a low error accumulation.

Objective To compare the Ambu Aura-i with the Air-Q intubating laryngeal airway for fiberoptic-guided tracheal intubation in ear deformity children.Methods Totally 120 children who were scheduled for elective auricular reconstruction surgery requiring general anaesthesia with tracheal intubation were enrolled in this prospective study. They were randomized to receive either the Ambu Aura-i (Aura-i group) or Air-Q (Air-Q group). The time for successful tracheal intubation was assessed. The attempts for successful device insertion, leak pressures, cuff pressures, fiberoptic grade of laryngeal view, time for removal of the device after endotracheal intubation, and complications were recorded. Results Device placement, endotracheal intubation, and removal after endotracheal intubation were successful in all patients. The Air-Q group required longer time than the Aura-i group in device placement[(14.1±7.2) s vs. (10.8±5.2) s, P0.05], successful endotracheal intubation [(39.8±9.5) s vs. (24.1±8.2) s, P0.05], and device removal [(18.2±5.1) s vs. (14.7±3.7) s, P0.05]. A Brownian cellular automaton (BCA) is an asynchronous cellular automaton (ACA) in which the local configurations representing signals may fluctuate randomly in the cell space. The random fluctuation of signals enables effective stochastic search to conduct computation, which can actually result in the decreased complexity of BCAs. This paper proposes a novel BCA based on a conventional ACA, which employs a smaller number of rules as compared to the previous model. This BCA is capable of universal computing which might demonstrate the crucial role of signal random fluctuation for reducing the complexity of universal ACAs.

This study assessed the effect of admissions qualifications on the subsequent academic performances of BSc nutrition students at a UK university. Entrance qualifications for three groups (Grp01, Grp02, Grp03) reading for a BSc(Hons) degree in, Dietetics, Food & Nutrition or Human Nutrition (n = 105) were determined from their UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) points. Academic performances were derived from coursework and examinations marks over four years (Year 1 to Year 4) for three nutrition-focussed courses. The results show that the average entrance qualifications for ‘Dietetics’ students (357 ± 72 points) was significantly higher than those for ‘Food & Nutrition’ (252 ± 49 points) and ‘Human Nutrition’ (277 ± 88 points) students. For the cohort as a whole, entrance qualifications were significantly correlated with academic performance in Year 1, Year 2, and Year 4 but not in Year 3 of study with effect sizes of 11.7%, 12.1%, 9.8% and 2.9%, respectively. The final degree mark for all courses differed by ~5% with 9.8% of variation in final marks explained by differences in entrance qualifications. It may be concluded that, entrance qualifications affect academic performances of nutrition students at university. However, the evidence suggests that student’s academic experiences at university had significant influences on their final degree scores. The findings of this study are discussed in terms of their relevance to teaching practices.

Biogenic opal and calcium carbonate contents in the Quaternary fine-grained sediments in the deep sea coral mound area (Hole U1317E and Hole U1318B drilled by IODP Expedition 307) in Porcupine Seabight, southwest off Ireland, were measured to estimate the primary productivity (Pp) of the surface seawater in NE Atlantic. The results from the two holes commonly show relatively high Pp values of 10–30 g cm−2 ky−1, having stratigraphic cyclicity reversely correlated with the δ13C profile. The high Pp could be attributed to the oceanic setting controlled by the Eastern North Atlantic (Central) Water and Shelf Edge Current, which have been strongly influenced by the obliquity forcing of the Milankovitch cycle. A positive covariance was observed between high Pp and the mound development in U1317E, implying that the organic matter was the principal food source for the mound coral community. It is proposed that the pelagic marl matrix of the mound sediments provides information of the surface water productivity that is useful for reconstructing the paleoceanography and the paleoclimate in the NW Atlantic.
