Orthognathic surgery (OGS) using the surgery-first approach (SFA) can decrease treatment time and increase patient satisfaction. Clockwise rotation (CWR) of the maxillomandibular complex to correct mandibular prognathism leads to optimized functional, aesthetic, and stable outcomes. This study examined the combined effect of SFA and CWR of the maxillomandibular complex to correct mandibular prognathism by comparing the surgical movement before (T0) and immediately after OGS (T1) and the stability between T1 and 12 months after OGS (T2).This prospective cohort study enrolled patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion who underwent SFA involving Le Fort I osteotomy and bilateral sagittal split osteotomy, with or without genioplasty. Based on the occlusal plane (OP) change at T0-T1, the patients were divided into CWR (OP 4°) and control (C) groups (OP ≤ 4°). The predictor variable was OP change at T0-T1. The primary outcome variable was the stability of pogonion (Pog) at T1-T2. The covariates included demographic factors, cephalometric measurements (anterior facial height, posterior facial height, OP, mandibular plane angle, incisor mandibular plane angle, overjet, and overbite), and 3-dimensional landmark displacement (anterior nasal spine, A-point, upper central incisor, upper first molar, lower central incisor, lower first molar, Pog, gonion, and condylion). An independent t-test was used to compare between these 2 groups when appropriate. The level of significance was set at P .05.The sample included 28 patients (17 females) in the C group and 36 (24 females) in the CWR group; the mean ages were 23.89 ± 3.35 and 24.08 ± 4.02 years, respectively. For the surgical movement at T0-T1, the CWR group showed an association with vertical movement of the maxilla at posterior nasal spine (P = .005), anterior nasal spine (P .001), and A-point (P .001) and horizontal backward movement of the mandible at B-point (P .001), Pog (P .001), and gonion (P = .042). At T1-T2, all landmarks remained stable without clinically significant difference between the 2 groups.Surgical movement in the CWR group could vertically displace the maxilla and setback mandible more than that in the C group. Postoperative skeletal stability remained the same between the 2 groups at 1 year after OGS.

There is little research about the stress, quality of life (QOL) and gut microbiota in newly diagnosed breast cancer patients. We sought to determine the relationship of distress scale and FACT-B different domain and fecal microbial composition among newly diagnosed breast cancer patients. Total 82 newly diagnosed breast cancer patients were enrolled in this prospective, observational study. The mean score of the FACT-B was 104.5 (SD, 19.76). The mean DT score was 4.43, with 53.7% (44/82) of the patients reporting moderate to severe distress (score 5 or above). Several associations between distress, FACT-B different domain and microbial taxa were observed among this sample of breast cancer patients. Specifically, Alcaligenaceae and Sutterella were significantly more abundant in individuals with higher scores on the DT scale at the family and genus level, respectively (p = 0.017), while Streptococcaceae (p = 0.028) at the family level and Streptococcus (p = 0.023) at the genus level were significantly more abundant in individuals with lower scores on the DT scale. This study defines the relationships among stress, QOL and gut microbiota in newly diagnosed breast cancer patients and provides many useful information to find potential probiotics for decreasing stress and improving QOL in breast cancer patients.

Objective: The study investigated the preoperative anatomical variables that affect the outcome of surgical correction in patients with Class III facial asymmetry. Methods: The study recruited 37 consecutive patients with facial asymmetry who had 2-jaw orthognathic surgery. They were divided into two groups based on the surgical outcome: symmetrical (S group) or asymmetrical (A group), according to the asymmetry index. The CBCT images were obtained before surgery (T0) and after debond (T1). The 3D dentofacial measurements were compared between groups S and A by the Mann–Whitney test. Spearman correlation analysis was performed to examine the relationship of all dentoskeletal variables in T0 with the facial symmetry outcome. Results: Significant between-group differences were observed in preoperative time, including maxillary anterior occlusal canting, maxillary posterior occlusal canting, the gonion–Frankfort horizontal plane (FHP) distance, the mandibular ramus axis–FHP distances, and sagittal and transverse of condyle position. Conclusions: For patients with severe skeletal Class III asymmetry, preoperative anatomical variables, particularly preoperative “roll” and “yaw” discrepancies and anatomical limitations of the mandible, should be considered for favorable asymmetry correction. Based on the anatomic variables that affect the outcomes of facial asymmetry correction, prognosis and treatment limitation could be predicted before treatment.

The purpose of this three-dimensional cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) study was to identify the difference between monocortical fixation (MCF) and bicortical fixation (BCF) in mandibular canal penetration after bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) to correct mandibular prognathism, where interosseous fixation was done by BCF or MCF. CBCT was performed 1 week postoperatively and Dolphin 3D software was used to assess direct penetration of the mandibular canal by either type of screw. The primary outcome variable was the presence or absence of mandibular canal penetration and was categorized as a binary coded variable. The BCF and MCF groups were compared by χ2 test, and the odds ratio for canal penetration was estimated. Multiple logistic regression was performed to identify factors related to canal penetration. A total of 118 patients were included. The MCF group had only 6% canal penetrations (3/50 patients) and the BCF group had 58.8% canal penetrations (40/68 patients). The regression model showed that BCF was the only factor causing mandibular canal penetration, with an adjusted odds ratio of 52.5. Awareness of the increased risk of canal penetration with BCF and potential nerve injury might influence case selection.

Objectives Orthodontic treatment with premolar extractions is typically used to relieve dental crowding and retract anterior teeth for lip profile improvement. The aim of the study is to compare the changes in regional pharyngeal airway space (PAS) after orthodontic treatment with Class II malocclusion and to identify the correlations between questionnaire results and PAS dimensions after orthodontic treatment. Materials and methods In this retrospective cohort study, 79 consecutive patients were divided into normodivergent nonextraction, normodivergent extraction, and hyperdivergent extraction groups. Serial lateral cephalograms were used to evaluate the patients’ PASs and hyoid bone positions. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and STOP-Bang questionnaire were used for sleep quality evaluation and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) risk assessment, respectively, after treatment. Results The greatest airway reduction was observed in hyperdivergent extraction group. However, the changes in PAS and hyoid positions did not differ significantly among 3 groups. According to questionnaire results, all 3 groups had high sleep quality and low risk of OSA, with no significant intergroup differences. Moreover, pretreatment-to-posttreatment changes in PAS were not correlated with sleep quality or risk of OSA. Conclusions Orthodontic retraction with premolar extractions nither exhibit significant reduction in airway dimensions nor increase their risk of OSA.

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a relatively safe and efficient alternative to surgery for patients with benign thyroid nodules. We investigated predictive factors associated with volume reduction using digital imaging analysis. In this retrospective study, a prospectively maintained database containing the data of patients who received treatment from April 2019 to March 2020 was analyzed. Computerized analysis for quantitative measurement of echogenicity, heterogeneity, and the proportion of cystic components was performed on ultrasonographic images. The volume reduction rate (VRR) was calculated during follow-up. Treatment efficacy was defined as a volume reduction greater than 50% of baseline volume. The median volume of 58 benign thyroid nodules before RFA was 22.7 mL. Of 53 nodules with sufficient follow-up, the median VRR was 46.4%, 61.5%, 63.4%, and 67.4% at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months, respectively. Overall, at one-year follow-up, treatment efficacy was achieved in 39 (74%) nodules. In a multivariate regression analysis, the proportion of cystic components and RFA treatment time were independently associated with treatment efficacy. A subgroup analysis focusing on solid nodules indicated a negative correlation between echogenicity and VRR. The proportion of cystic components in thyroid nodules is the main predictor of RFA treatment efficacy. In solid nodules, higher echogenicity is associated with a lower volume reduction.

Objectives The evaluation of orthognathic surgery (OgS) is shifting towards a coherent approach for patient care that balances objective clinician-defined measures with patient-centred outcome assessments, including health-related quality of life (QoL). This aim of this study adds to the pool of literature in East Asian subjects by studying the longitudinal QoL changes in Taiwanese patients with dentofacial deformities (DFD) undergoing OgS, using two standardized questionnaires at three different treatment stages. Materials and Methods This prospective cohort study comprised 113 consecutive Taiwanese OgS patients who underwent surgical-orthodontic treatment between 2015 and 2018. The subjects completed SF-36 and OHIP-14 standardized questionnaires with one additional aesthetics question at one month before OGS (T1), 3 months (T2) and at debond (T3). All responses were screened, and 90 valid questionnaires included for analysis. Additional subgroup comparisons were made between Class II and Class III patients, symmetric and asymmetric patients, surgery-first approach and orthodontics-first approach, presence or absence of genioplasty, genders, and younger and older patients. Results The cohort was comprised largely of skeletal Class III patients (84.4%) and showed significant improvements in OHIP-14 and Aesthetic score from T1 to T3. Pre-surgical orthodontic decompensation leads to a decrease in QoL. Patients who have undergone genioplasty have better generic health QoL than those without genioplasty at T3. Male DFD patients have better generic oral health and aesthetics QoL than female DFD patients. Age does not appear to affect generic health, generic oral health and aesthetics QoL at any time during OgS treatment. Conclusion OgS has positive effects on generic health, generic oral health and aesthetics QoL in DFD patients. The effect of asymmetry on QoL in OgS patients remains an area that requires further research in order to clarify conflicting results in the literature. Future studies should explore the long-term stability of QoL effects. Clinical Relevance: Prospective evaluation with contemporaneous questionnaire surveys at appropriate time points could better reflect the fluctuations of QoL and treatment variables throughout the surgical-orthodontic treatment.

Conclusions Orthodontic extraction and incisor retraction do not affect the dimensions of pharyngeal airway. Vertical control of Class II skeletal malocclusion, especially in cases involving retrusive chins, can be applied to prevent the worsening of facial profile and to mitigate a tendency of reduction of airway dimensions. Clinical relevance Orthodontic treatment with premolar extractions does not exhibit a reduction in airway dimensions or diminish the patients’ sleep quality or increase their risk of OSA.

BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to investigate the accuracy of bimaxillary orthognathic surgery regarding different sequencing (maxilla-first or mandible-first surgery) and different thicknesses of intermediate splints. METHODS This retrospective cohort study evaluated the accuracy of postoperative outcome in accordance with virtual planning in 57 patients requiring bimaxillary osteotomies with different operation sequence: maxilla-first (n = 31) or mandible-first (n = 26) surgery. The effect of different splint thicknesses (i.e., thick, n = 22; and thin, n = 35) was also evaluated. The 1-week postoperative cone-beam computed tomographic craniofacial images were superimposed onto preoperative simulated images to measure the discrepancy of the three-dimensional cephalometric landmarks. RESULTS Neither sequencing approach differed in overall accuracy (1-week postoperative to preoperative simulated image discrepancy): maxilla-first, 1.69 ± 0.53 mm; versus mandible-first, 1.44 ± 0.52 mm. In detailed comparison, mandible-first surgery resulted in more accuracy in the vertical dimension. Thick intermediate splints provided better control (less error) of upper central incisors in the sagittal position (thick splint, 1.38 ± 1.17 mm; thin splint, 2.13 ± 1.38 mm). However, overall accuracy was not affected by splint thickness. Conditions affecting sequencing predilection included skeletal class III with vertical excess, maxillary down-grafting, counterclockwise rotation of the maxillomandibular complex, and simulated mandibular opening for splint fabrication clearance. CONCLUSIONS Despite both means of sequencing being performed similarly, mandible-first surgery was more precise in the vertical dimension. Thick intermediate splints seemed to yield better control of central incisors in the sagittal position. However, under appropriate selection of intermediate splints to maintain interim condylar position, splint thickness has no effect on overall accuracy. PURPOSE Degenerative joint changes commonly affect the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and can result in chin deviation. However, the extent of degenerative TMJ changes and chin deviation has not been well-characterized. The present study sought to correlate degenerative TMJ changes with condylar volume, grayscale measures, and chin deviation. MATERIALS AND METHODS The present cross-sectional study had enrolled women with skeletal Class III malocclusion. Cone-beam computed tomography scans were acquired preoperatively. For each condyle, degenerative TMJ signs were analyzed and the condylar volume and grayscale were measured. The predictor variable was the presence of degenerative TMJ signs, classified as categorical data: 0, if none; 1, only present in 1 joint; and 2, present in both joints. The primary outcome variable was a chin deviation of 3 mm or more. Other associated variables were grouped by age, cephalometric data, and 3-dimensional condylar measurements. Descriptive bivariate statistics were computed, and univariate and multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify any associations between degenerative TMJ disease and chin deviation. RESULTS We included 85 patients, who were classified into 2 groups: less than 3 mm of chin deviation (n = 43) and 3 mm or more of chin deviation (n = 42). Coaxial core/shell electrospun nanofibers consisting of ferroelectric P(VDF-TrFE) and relaxor ferroelectric P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE) are tailor-made with hierarchical structures to modulate their mechanical properties with respect to their constituents. Compared with two single and the other coaxial membranes prepared in the research, the core/shell-TrFE/CTFE membrane shows a more prominent mechanical anisotropy between revolving direction (RD) and cross direction (CD) associated with improved resistance to tensile stress for the crystallite phase stability and good strength-ductility balance. This is due to the better degree of core/shell-TrFE-CTFE nanofiber alignment and the crystalline/amorphous ratio. The coupling between terpolymer P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE) and copolymer P(VDF-TrFE) is responsible for phase stabilization, comparing the core/shell-TrFE/CTFE with the pristine terpolymer. Moreover, an impressive collective deformation mechanism of a two-length scale in the core/shell composite structure is found. We apply in-situ synchrotron X-ray to resolve the two-length scale simultaneously by using the small-angle X-ray scattering to characterize the nanofibers and the wide-angle X-ray diffraction to identify the phase transformations. Our findings may serve as guidelines for the fabrication of the electrospun nanofibers used as membranes-based electroactive polymers.

We aimed to ascertain whether therapeutic hypothermia (TH) acts as cardioprotective management for heat stroke (HS). Adult male rats under general anesthesia were exposed to whole-body heating (43°C for 70 min) to induce HS. Rats with HS displayed hyperthermia (core body temperature 42°C vs. 36°C); hypotension (30 mmHg vs. 90 mmHg mean arterial blood pressure); suppressed left ventricular (LV) performance (stroke volume 52 μl/min vs. 125 μl/min), ejection fraction (0.29% vs. 0.69%), relaxation factor (72 ms vs. 12 ms), and arterial elastance (0.31 mmHg/ μl vs. 10 mmHg/ μl); increased myocardial injury markers (e.g., creatine kinase-MB: 86 U/L vs. 24 U/L, cardiac troponin I: 3.08 ng/ml vs. 0.57 ng/ml); increased myocardial oxidative stress markers (e.g., malondialdehyde: 6.52 nmol/mg vs. 1.06 nmol/mg, thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances: 29 nmol/g vs. 2 nmol/g); decreased myocardial antioxidants (e.g., superoxide dismutase: 6 unit/mg vs. 17 unit/mg, reduced glutathione: 0.64 nmol/mg vs. 2.53 nmol/mg); increased myocardial proinflammatory cytokines (e.g., tumor necrosis factor-α 3200 pg/ml vs. 1000 pg/ml, interleukin-6: 668 pg/ml vs. 102 pg/ml); and increased cardiac damage scores (2.2 vs. 0.3). TH therapy significantly reversed the following conditions: HS-induced hyperthermia (37.5°C core body temperature), hypotension (71 mmHg), suppressed LV performance (stroke volume: 97 μl/min, ejection fraction: 0.65%, relaxation factor: 39 ms, and arterial elastance: 0.99 mmHg/μl), increased myocardial injury markers (e.g., creatine kinase-MB: 37 U/L, cardiac troponin I: 1.06 ng/ml), increased myocardial oxidative stress markers (e.g., malondialdehyde: 2.68 nmol/mg, thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances: 12.3 nmol/g), decreased myocardial antioxidants (e.g., superoxide dismutase: 13.3 unit/mg, reduced glutathione: 2.71 mmol/mg), increased myocardial proinflammatory cytokines (e.g., tumor necrosis factor-α 1500 pg/ml, interleukin-6: 108 ng/ml); and increased cardiac damage scores (0.9). We thus conclude that TH protects against HS-induced arterial hypotension by promoting LV performance in rats. These results add to the literature regarding the use of TH as cardioprotective management for HS.

In this study, an acetic acid-ethanol model spirit with 40% alcohol, 1000 ppm was treated using high-pressure homogenization (HPH) (1, 3 and 5 cycles; 30, 50, 70 MPa) to investigate the synthesis effectiveness of ethyl acetate. The result showed that ethyl acetate increased 342% after a 5 cycle treatment. In the HPH treatment (30–90 MPa under 10–25 °C with 1–7 cycles) of commercial sorghum spirit, the test shows that ethyl acetate and ethyl lactate were 2316 and 1586 ppm, respectively, while no obvious changes were observed in methanol, fusel oil and total acidity, and only a slight decline in ethanol. In addition, the results also show that HPH treatment can reduce the methanol content and produce other aroma compounds such as methyl acetate. Sensory evaluation also revealed improvement effects on flavor, smoothness, aftertaste and acceptability of the artificial aging technology on the production of spirits.

This study compared changes in occlusal characteristics in patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion with surgery-first approach (SFA) and those with orthodontic-first approach (OFA) through digital occlusal analysis.In this prospective study, 90 consecutive subjects were divided into control, OFA, and SFA groups (30 per group). Force discrepancy, occlusal time, tooth contact, center of force, and force-time graph pattern were calculated for all samples using the T-Scan III system. Between-group differences were analyzed using a 1-way analysis of variance and generalized estimating equations. These parameters were calculated at the following time points: preoperatively, 1-month postoperatively (T1), 4-months postoperatively, and 1-year postoperatively (T3).No significant differences were observed in the parameters between the experimental groups. The force discrepancy of the OFA and SFA groups decreased, approaching the value of controls at T3. The occlusal time significantly increased at T1 and progressively decreased at T3. The initial contact and maximum force were most frequently observed on molars, and its maximum force significantly decreased by 5.72% and 7.40% in the OFA and SFA groups at T3, respectively. The number of tooth contact was significantly reduced at T1 and gradually increased at T3. Moreover, after surgery, the force-time graph pattern was normalized, and the center of force tended to be more centric; however, the most frequent trajectory revealed premature contact during closing.No significant difference was found in all parameters between the OFA and SFA groups. Occlusion deteriorated at 1 month postoperatively but gradually improved at 1 year postoperatively, approaching the controls.

The information on the hard- and soft-tissue factors correlated with tooth display after LeFort I osteotomy, especially in the surgery-first approach (SFA), are limited. This study aimed to correlate different parameters with the maxillary incisor display in patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion and those with cleft lip and palate (CLP) in SFA.This study consisted of 35 patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion and 32 with cleft deformities who had undergone orthognathic surgery. Pretreatment and posttreatment lateral cephalometric analysis were obtained. Maxillary incisor display was measured in photographs. The intraclass correlation coefficient was used to assess the intraexaminer repeatability. The Student t test was used to compare the maxillary incisor display between 2 groups. Analysis of covariance was performed with pretreatment measurement as covariates, and the important determinants for maxillary incisor display were identified by adjusting the baseline measurements.The mean increase of maxillary advancement at point A was 5.25 mm and 1.28 mm downward movement for skeletal Class III malocclusion, whereas it was 4.59 mm advancement and 2.16 mm downward movement for patients with CLP. The resulting maxillary incisor display was 2.86 mm for skeletal Class III malocclusion and 2.56 mm for patients with CLP. The covariates for maxillary incisor display before intervention was significantly associated with the maxillary incisor display after intervention (P 0.001). However, the interaction effect of groups was not seen (P = 0.933). The horizontal position of A, vertical position of ANS, and upper lip length were the most predictable parameters (P 0.001, P 0.001, P = 0.048, respectively) for maxillary incisor display in both groups.Horizontal position of point A, vertical position of ANS, and upper lip length are the most important determinants for maxillary incisor display for patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion and those with CLP.

Angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors have a potent antihypertensive effect in both humans and animals. Various peptides derived from food proteins were found to have ACE inhibitory activity. For determining ACE inhibitory activity, protein hydrolysates were prepared from tuna broth (contain 4% water-soluble protein) using various commercial proteases. Orientase hydrolysate (OAH) exhibited the most potent inhibitory activity on ACE. The best hydrolysis conditions with respect to inhibition of ACE were 3hr of incubation at 50˚C, pH 6.5, with enzyme (1.0% orientase) to substrate (tuna broth) of 1/25 (v/v). Preparation under these conditions yielded activity (IC50 12.52 ± 0.02 mg/mL). Fractionation of the orientase hydrolysate on a Sephadex G-25 gel filtration chromatograph resulted in the production of more active inhibitors. The active fractions were peptides of molecular weights < 1,000 Da. The most active fraction had an IC50 value of 0.21 ± 0.01 mg/mL. This fraction was rich in basic amino acids and aromatic amino acids [peptides with molecular mass (< 565 Da)].

The objective of this study was to identify the origin of edible alcohol usually added in Taiwanese rice-spirits by using deuterium nuclear magnetic resonance (SNIF-NMR method). Rice-spirits labeled TK-8, TCS-10 were made from two rice varieties, Taikeng 8 and Taichung sen 10, whereas molasses-spirit labeled MS was obtained from Taiwan Sugar Corporation. The proportion of ethanol molecules monodeuterated on the methyl site (D/H)(subscript Ⅰ) and methylene site (D/H)(subscript Ⅱ), and the ratio R between the intensities of methyl and methylene signals in deuterium spectra were significantly different among TK-8, TCS-10, and MS. Of the three indices, only (D/H)(subscript Ⅰ) linearly (R^2＞0.96) increased with addition of MS in both TK-8 and TCS-10. Therefore, (D/H)(subscript Ⅰ) was an index for the identification of pure rice-spirits mixed with ethanol originated from molasses.

This study was conducted to analyze the long-term facial growth of patients with craniofacial microsomia (CFM) after early mandible distraction osteogenesis (DO), and compared adult three-dimensional (3D) craniofacial features of patients with and without early mandibular DO for Pruzansky grade II deformities. The study included 20 patients: 9 with early mandible DO (the DO group) and 11 without previous treatment (the NDO group). Longitudinal radiographs were measured for growth changes after DO. The 3D craniofacial images were constructed to compare the craniofacial forms between the two groups. The patients with early DO presented 8 to 9 mm forward and downward maxillary growth and 4.6 mm limited forward and 17.3 mm substantial downward mandibular growth. The ramus length ratio (affected/nonaffected) was 90.8% at DO completion and decreased to 69.5% at growth completion during 13 years of follow-up. Both groups showed obvious craniofacial asymmetry, as indicated by occlusal plane canting, chin deviation, transverse and vertical condyle positions, and mandibular contours. Although all the bilateral differences were higher in the NDO group than in the DO group, no statistical differences were found. Early mandible distraction could not alter the inherent facial growth pattern in patients with grade II CFM. Limited changes are derived for definitive facial correction with early DO.

In this study, a polyethylene (PE) film coated with chitosan (CS) and gallic acid (GA) was prepared using plasma modification technology and applied for the preservation of tilapia fillets. Based on the analysis of surface morphology and surface functional groups, it was shown that plasma modification allowed CS and GA coating on PE. And GACS/PE demonstrated better antioxidant ability than CS/PE and GA/PE individually. The results of the tilapia freshness test showed that the total plate count showed that GACS/PE can inhibit 1.52 log CFU/g and delay the production of volatile basic nitrogen below 15 mg/100 g after 14 d of storage. Moreover, GA/PE (0.26 mg MDA/kg) and GACS/PE (0.24 mg MDA/kg) showed better thiobarbituric acid inhibitiry effect than control (0.30 mg MDA/kg) on day 14. These results indicate that these packaging films are efficient in extending the shelf life of tilapia fillets.

The aim of this study was to compare the outcomes of surgical-orthodontic treatment between hemifacial microsomia (HFM) patients who had and had not undergone early mandibular distraction osteogenesis (DO). Twenty adult unilateral HFM patients were included, seven who had undergone early mandibular DO (DO group) and 13 who had not (NDO group). All patients were type IIB, except for one type IIA patient in the NDO group. Mean age at definitive surgery was 20.72±2.96 years. Linear, cross-sectional, and volumetric measurements were obtained from serial cone beam computed tomography scans. Data were obtained pre-surgery (T0), 1 week after surgery (T1), and at treatment completion (T2) to determine surgical movement, post-surgical stability, and net gain movement. Surgical and ultimate outcomes did not differ significantly between the groups. The overall surgical movement among all patients was as follows (mean values): maxillomandibular complex (MMC) symmetry was achieved by Le Fort I differential roll movement (3.78mm extrusion on the affected side, 4.28mm impaction on the non-affected side), a combination of medial movement and yaw rotation of MMC, and genioplasty. Upper and lower dental midlines and deviated menton were shifted by 5.73mm, 5.08mm, and 12.38mm, respectively. Hungry bone syndrome is characterized by prolonged and severe hypocalcemia following parathyroidectomy. Previously, we reported that preoperative alkaline phosphatase is a major factor predicting prolonged hospital stay. Nonetheless, some patients with low alkaline phosphatase levels presented with hungry bone syndrome, suggesting that additional factors may play a role. From September 2010 to December 2017, consecutive dialysis patients who underwent parathyroidectomy for secondary hyperparathyroidism were analyzed. Length of hospital stay was used as a surrogate marker for postoperative bone hunger. A total of 260 patients were included in the study. The median postoperative hospital stay was 3 days, and 69 (27%) patients had a stay longer than 3 days. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that alkaline phosphatase (odds ratio [OR] = 1.005), osteocalcin (OR = 1.001), and subtotal parathyroidectomy (OR = 0.061) were associated with prolonged hospital stay. Multivariate linear regression analysis indicated that age (β = − 0.170), alkaline phosphatase (β = 0.430), and osteocalcin (β = 0.166) were correlated with the length of stay. Background Surgery-first approach (SFA) is an emerging concept that surgically reposition the jaw bones without presurgical orthodontic treatment phase. The study investigated 3D dental movement in the postoperative orthodontic phase with orthodontic-first (OF) and SFA in orthognathic surgery (OGS). Material and Methods This study included consecutive 40 patients (20, SF group; 20, OF group) skeletal Class III who underwent 2-jaw OGS correction. The data of cone-beam computed tomography were acquired at 3 stages with the scan of dental models to replace the dentition of the craniofacial images; at before OGS (T0), 1 week after OGS (T1) and at the completion of treatment (T2). The skeletal changes were obtained by overall superimposition. The post-operative dental movement was measured by 3D regional superimposition between T1 and T2. Results There were no significant difference in the postsurgical orthodontic movement in both groups except significant upper and lower molars extrusion by 2 mm in the SF group. Both groups exhibited no significant difference in mandibular stability in sagittal and vertical directions. The amount of extrusion in the molars was correlated with a postoperative sagittal mandibular forward movement. The total treatment duration was significantly shorter 230 days in the SF group. Conclusions The completion of the orthodontic treatment after OGS in the SFA was mainly accomplished through molar extrusive movement in both arches. The surgical setup of dental occlusion with 4 mm posterior open bite could be corrected during the postsurgical orthodontics in SFA through molar extrusion. The dental occlusion outcome was no different between OF and SFA.

The coaxial core/shell composite electrospun nanofibers consisting of relaxor ferroelectric P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE) and ferroelectric P(VDF-TrFE) polymers are successfully tailored towards superior structural, mechanical, and electrical properties over the individual polymers. The core/shell-TrFE/CTFE membrane discloses a more prominent mechanical anisotropy between the revolving direction (RD) and cross direction (CD) associated with a higher tensile modulus of 26.9 MPa and good strength-ductility balance, beneficial from a better degree of nanofiber alignment, the increased density, and C-F bonding. The interfacial coupling between the terpolymer P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE) and copolymer P(VDF-TrFE) is responsible for comparable full-frequency dielectric responses between the core/shell-TrFE/CTFE and pristine terpolymer. Moreover, an impressive piezoelectric coefficient up to 50.5 pm/V is achieved in the core/shell-TrFE/CTFE composite structure. Our findings corroborate the promising approach of coaxial electrospinning in efficiently tuning mechanical and electrical performances of the electrospun core/shell composite nanofiber membranes-based electroactive polymers (EAPs) actuators as artificial muscle implants.
