Abstract Background Phytochrome-interacting factors (PIFs) plays an important role in plants as hubs for intracellular signaling regulation. The PIF gene family has been identified and characterized in many plants, but alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), an important perennial high-quality legume forage, has not been reported on the PIF gene family. Results In this study, we presented the identification and characterization of five MsPIF genes in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.). Phylogenetic analysis indicated that PIFs from alfalfa and other four plant species could be divided into three groups supported by similar motif analysis. The collinearity analysis of the MsPIF gene family showed the presence of two gene pairs, and the collinearity analysis with AtPIFs showed three gene pairs, indicating that the evolutionary process of this family is relatively conservative. Analysis of cis-acting elements in promoter regions of MsPIF genes indicated that various elements were related to light, abiotic stress, and plant hormone responsiveness. Gene expression analyses demonstrated that MsPIFs were primarily expressed in the leaves and were induced by various abiotic stresses. Conclusion This study conducted genome-wide identification, evolution, synteny analysis, and expression analysis of the PIFs in alfalfa. Our study lays a foundation for the study of the biological functions of the PIF gene family and provides a useful reference for improving abiotic stress resistance in alfalfa.

Abstract This study is situated against the backdrop of China’s emergence as a new player in the international higher education market and its initiative to promote the Chinese language through academic programmes. We interrupt the entrenched ‘Englishisation’ of higher education in non-Anglophone contexts and investigate Thai international students’ language ideologies and language practices in the Chinese-medium instruction (CMI) university context. The qualitative data reveals the dual functions of Chinese in Thai students’ day-to-day practices—a medium of instruction and a ‘default’ common language for communication both in and beyond formal settings. In spite of their native speakerism, we also found incongruence between language ideologies and practices in and beyond the classroom. This study carries important implications for teaching and learning in CMI universities and beyond, as we call for attention to multilingual awareness development, ‘respectability’ pedagogies and translanguaging practices in international universities with a linguistically diverse student population.

Abstract Background Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) is an important pathogenic bacterium that causes dental caries, while Streptococcus gordonii (S. gordonii) is a non-cariogenic bacterium that inhibits the growth of S. mutans. The SepM protein can promote the inhibitory ability of S. mutans against S. gordonii by cleaving CSP-21 and activating the ComDE two-component system. This study was designed to explore sepM mutation in S. mutans clinical isolates and related function in the regulation of interactions with S. gordonii. Methods The S. mutans clinical strains that can inhibit the growth of S. gordonii constitute the inhibitory group. 286 C-serotype S. mutans strains were categorized into S. gordonii inhibitory (n = 114) and non-inhibitory bacteria (n = 172). We detected sanger sequencing of sepM gene, the expression levels of related genes and proteins in clinical isolates, obtained prokaryotic expression and purification of mutated proteins, and analyzed the effect of the target mutations on the binding between SepM and CSP-21. Results We found that C482T, G533A, and G661A missense mutations were presented at significantly higher frequency in the inhibitory group relative to the non-inhibitory group. There was no significant difference in the expression of the sepM gene between selected clinical isolates harboring the G533A mutation and the control group. The expression levels of SepM, phosphorylated ComD, and ComE in the mutation group were significantly higher than those in the control group. SepM_control and SepM_D221N (G661A at the gene level) were found to contain two residues close to the active center while SepM_G178D (G533A at the gene level) contained three residues close to the active center. At 25 °C and a pH of 5.5, SepM_D221N (G661A) exhibited higher affinity for CSP-21 (KD = 8.25 µM) than did the SepM control (KD = 33.1 µM), and at 25 °C and a pH of 7.5, SepM_G178D (G533A) exhibited higher affinity (KD = 3.02 µM) than the SepM control (KD = 15.9 µM). It means that it is pH dependent. Conclusions Our data suggest that increased cleavage of CSP-21 by the the mutant SepM may be a reason for the higher inhibitory effect of S. mutans on S. gordonii .

Abstract The effectiveness of national policies for air pollution control has been demonstrated, but the relative effectiveness of short-term emission reduction measures in comparison with national policies has not. Here we show that short-term abatement measures during important international events substantially reduced PM2.5 concentrations, but air quality rebounded to pre-event levels after the measures ceased. Long-term adherence to strict emission reduction policies led to successful decreases of 54% in PM2.5 concentrations in Beijing, and 23% in atmospheric nitrogen deposition in China from 2012 to 2020. Incentivized by “blue skies” type campaigns, economic development and reactive nitrogen pollution are quickly decoupled, showing that a combination of inspiring but aggressive short-term measures and effective but durable long-term policies delivers sustainable air quality improvement. However, increased ammonia concentrations, transboundary pollutant flows, and the complexity to achieving reduction targets under climate change scenarios, underscore the need for the synergistic control of multiple pollutants and inter-regional action.

The voltage drop appearing at Mg anode-electrolyte interface is a critical issue for the battery power and energy density of aqueous primary Mg-air batteries. The respective voltage loss is typically assigned to the deposits layer forming on the anode surface during discharge. In this work, we experimentally and computationally investigate the critical factors affecting the voltage drop at Mg anode towards a deeper understanding of the contribution of deposit and its growth. A two-dimensional (2D) mathematical model is proposed to compute the voltage drop of Mg-0.15Ca wt.% alloy (Mg-0.15Ca) by means of a semi-empirical formulas and experiments-based modification model, considering the effect of discharge current density, the negative difference effect (NDE) and surface deposits layer itself. This model is utilized to simulate the discharge potential of the anode at predefined experimental current densities. The computed voltage drop (half-cell voltage) is in good agreement with the experimental value. Abstract Protagonists allege that artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionising contemporaneous mindscapes. Here, we authoritatively review the status quo of AI and machine learning application in irrigated agriculture, evaluating the potential of, and challenges associated with, a wide range of existential AI approaches. We contend that aspiring developers of AI irrigation systems may benefit from human-centred AI, a nascent algorithm that captures diverse end-user views, behaviours and actions, potentially facilitating refinement of proposed systems through iterative stakeholder feedback. AI-guided human–machine collaboration can streamline integration of user needs, allowing customisation towards situational farm management adaptation. Presentation of big data in intuitive, legible and actionable forms for specialists and laypeople also urgently requires attention: here, AI-explainable interpretability may help harness human expertise, enabling end-users to contribute their experience within an AI pipeline for bespoke outputs. Transfer learning holds promise in contextualising place-based AI to agroecological regions, production systems or enterprise mixes, even with limited data inputs. We find that the rate of AI scientific and software development in recent times has outpaced the evolution of adequate legal and institutional regulations, and often social, moral and ethical license to operate, revealing consumer issues associated with data ownership, legitimacy and trust. We opine that AI has great potential to elicit sustainable outcomes in food security, social innovation and environmental stewardship, albeit such potential is more likely to be realised through concurrent development of appropriate ethical, moral and legal dimensions.

Abstract Introduction Listeriosis is a severe food-borne disease caused by Listeria monocytogenes infection. The data of listeriosis in Xi’an population are limited. The aim of this study is to evaluate the clinical features and fatality risk factors for listeriosis in three tertiary-care hospitals in Xi’an, China Methods The characteristics of demographic data, underlying diseases, clinical manifestations, laboratory indicators, cranial imaging examination, antibiotics therapeutic schemes, and clinical outcomes were collected between 2011 and 2023. Logistic regression analysis was performed. Results Seventy-one etiologically confirmed listeriosis patients were enrolled, including 12 neonatal and 59 non-neonatal cases. The majority of neonatal listeriosis presented as preterm (50%) and fetal distress (75%). The main clinical manifestations of non-neonatal listeriosis included fever (88%), headache (32%), disorder of consciousness (25%), vomiting (17%), abdominal pain (12%), and convulsions (8%). The fatality rate in neonatal cases was higher than in non-neonatal listeriosis (42 vs. 17%). Although no deaths were reported in maternal listeriosis, only two of 23 patients had an uneventful obstetrical outcome. Five maternal listeriosis delivered culture-positive neonates, three of whom decreased within 1 week post-gestation due to severe complications. Twenty-eight cases were neurolisteriosis and 43 cases were bacteremia. Neurolisteriosis had a higher fatality rate compared with bacteremia listeriosis (36 vs. 12%). The main neuroradiological images were cerebral edema/hydrocephalus, intracranial infection, and cerebral hernia. Listeria monocytogenes showed extremely low resistance to ampicillin (two isolates) and penicillin (one isolate). The fatality risk factors were the involvement of the central nervous system, hyperbilirubinemia, and hyponatremia for all enrolled subjects. Hyperuricemia contributed to the elevation of fatality risk in non-neonatal listeriosis. Conclusions When the patients suffered with symptoms of fever and central nervous system infection, they should be alert to the possibility of listeriosis. Early administration of ampicillin- or penicillin-based therapy might be beneficial for recovery of listeriosis.

Abstract Background The Premonitory Urge for Tics Scale (PUTS) is a common self-report measure of premonitory urges for patients with tic disorders. This study aims to evaluate the Chinese version of the PUTS (PUTS-C) and to explore its association with psychiatric symptoms in Chinese children diagnosed with tic disorders. Methods The psychometric evaluation involved 204 outpatients with tic disorders, aged 7–16 years, who were divided into two age groups: (7–10 years, n = 103; 11–16 years, n = 95). Results The PUTS-C demonstrated good internal consistency (McDonald’sω = 0.84) and two-week test-retest reliability (0.76). We observed a statistically significant correlation between the total PUTS-C score and various Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS) subscales and total tic severity scores. The PUTS-C score also showed significant correlations with the Children Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (CY-BOCS), Screening Child Anxiety-Related Emotional Disorders (SCARED), and Children’s Depression Inventory (CDI). Notably, premonitory urges independently predicted tic severity, beyond the influence of comorbid symptoms. A two-factor structure of the PUTS-C was identified in the total sample through factor analysis. Conclusions The PUTS-C possesses acceptable validity and good reliability. It appears that premonitory urges in Chinese patients with tic disorders are associated with obsessive-compulsive symptoms, anxiety, and depression, but can independently predict tic severity. Specific PUTS-C factors possibly related to motor and vocal tics. Future research should continue to investigate age-related differences and the association with tics and other sensory symptoms.

Abstract Background Alopecia areata (AA), a prevalent form of autoimmune hair loss, has a not well-defined relationship with atopic and allergic disorders, including eczema, hay fever, and asthma. Objectives This study aims to elucidate the genetic relationship between atopy, allergies, and alopecia areata (AA) using Mendelian randomization. We hypothesize that atopic and allergic conditions contribute to the genetic predisposition of AA. Methods We analyzed extensive genetic data from Genome-wide Association Studies (GWAS) involving over one million individuals. This analysis focused on assessing the genetic correlation between AA and various allergic conditions, including hay fever, eczema, asthma, and allergies to pollen, dust, and cats. The inverse variance weighted method served as our primary analytical tool, complemented by sensitivity analyses to verify the robustness of our results. Results Our findings reveal a significant genetic correlation between atopy/allergies and an increased risk of AA. Notably, strong associations were observed for hay fever, eczema, asthma, and specific allergies (pollen, dust, and cats). The sensitivity analyses corroborated these associations, reinforcing the reliability of our primary results. Conclusions This study provides compelling genetic evidence of an association between atopic and allergic conditions and the development of AA. These findings suggest that individuals with such conditions may benefit from enhanced surveillance for early signs of AA.

Carbon dots (CDs) prepared from biomass usually produce poor quantum yield and reproducibility. A fine separation of raw materials may enhance the fluorescence performance. In this work, embryos of cumin seeds were precisely chosen as the carbon source to prepare (CDs) through hydrothermal method. The obtained product (CDs-E) possessed a higher quantum yield of 10.60 % than those synthesized with testas or whole seeds, which may be due to the relatively smaller particle size and more C-N functional groups. Rutin, as a common natural active component, could quench the fluorescence of CDs-E notably through internal filtering effect. Herein, a highly selective fluorescent sensor based on CDs-E for detecting rutin was proposed with a linearity range of 0.05 ∼ 30 μM and a detection limit of 0.015 μM obtained. Additionally, the developed method was successfully applied for the detection of rutin in Flos Sophorae, rutin tablets and capsules. This work showed the significance of fine classification for natural carbon source in preparation of CDs and provided a feasible method for quality monitoring of rutin-related pharmaceuticals, health care products and traditional Chinese medicinal materials.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are universally distributed in soils, including saline soils, and can form mycorrhizal symbiosis with the vast majority of higher plants. This symbiosis can reduce soil salinity and influence plant growth and development by improving nutrient uptake, increasing plant antioxidant enzyme activity, and regulating hormone levels. In this study, rhizosphere soil from eight plants in the Songnen saline–alkaline grassland was used to isolate, characterize, and screen the indigenous advantageous AMF. The promoting effect of AMF on alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) under salt treatment was also investigated. The findings showed that 40 species of AMF in six genera were identified by high-throughput sequencing. Glomus mosseae (G.m) and Glomus etunicatum (G.e) are the dominant species in saline ecosystems of northern China. Alfalfa inoculated with Glomus mosseae and Glomus etunicatum under different salt concentrations could be infested and form a symbiotic system. The mycorrhizal colonization rate and mycorrhizal dependence of G.m inoculation were significantly higher than those of G.e inoculation. With increasing salt concentration, inoculation increased alfalfa plant height, fresh weight, chlorophyll content, proline (Pro), soluble sugar (SS), soluble protein (SP), peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) activity while decreasing the malondialdehyde (MDA) content and superoxide anion production rate. The results highlight that inoculation with G.m and G.e effectively alleviated salinity stress, with G.m inoculation having a significant influence on salt resistance in alfalfa. AMF might play a key role in alfalfa growth and survival under harsh salt conditions.

BackgroundThe neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a simple marker of systemic inflammatory responses. The present study aims to evaluate the prognostic significance of the NLR on admission day in predicting outcomes for patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB), which is a prevalent medical emergency.Methods726 patients who were admitted to our clinic between January 2019 and December 2022 diagnosed with UGIB, and who underwent necessary examinations, were included in the study. The patients’ Glasgow-Blatchford Score (GBS), Full Rockall Score (FRS), and NLR levels were calculated at the first admission. Outcomes were defined as in-hospital mortality, need for blood transfusion, surgical treatment and endoscopic therapy. Patients were categorized into four groups using NLR quartile levels to compare their clinical characteristics, Glasgow Blatchford Score, Full Rockall Score levels, and prognosis. Secondary, we modified FRS and GBS by adding NLR, respectively. We used area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) to assess the accuracy of risk prediction for NLR, NLR-GBS, and NLR-FRS improved models.ResultsOf 726 patients, 6% died in hospital, 23.9% received endoscopic interventon, 4.8% received surgical treatment, and 46.4% received transfusion therapy. Multifactorial logistic regression showed that a high level of NLR was a risk factor for death in patients with UGIB (p = 0.028). Emulsified asphalt has become a popular green material in modern road construction due to its environmentally friendly and energy-saving characteristics. The method of obtaining residues is crucial for accurately evaluating the performance of emulsified asphalt and ensuring the quality of road construction. The evaporated residues of 3% and 6% SBR modified emulsified asphalt and 6% SBS modified emulsified asphalt were obtained by the low-temperature evaporation (LTE) method and the direct heating (DH) method, respectively. The rheological properties of the modified asphalt residues were tested by the temperature frequency sweeping (TFS), multi-stress creep recovery (MSCR), and linear amplitude sweeping (LAS) tests using the dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), and their aging resistance in the form of carbonyl index was measured by the Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The test results showed that, as compared to the DH method, the SBR modified emulsified asphalt residue obtained by the LTE method had higher elastic recovery rate, lower irrecoverable creep compliance, smaller accumulated performance deformation, longer fatigue life, and higher aging resistance, indicating that the LTE method using the low-temperature curing conditions (25°C, 24 h—60°C, 24 h) is more suitable for curing the SBR modified emulsified asphalt. However, the opposite trends of the performance indices except the aging resistance were observed for the SBS modified emulsified asphalt residue obtained from the LTE method, showing that the high-temperature curing condition (120°C, 30 min—163°C, 1 min) can give the SBS modified asphalt residue better rheological properties and higher fatigue resistance performance, but it also has the disadvantage of weakening the aging resistance. Therefore, in practical application, an appropriate curing temperature should be selected to condition the SBS modified emulsified asphalt for balancing its rheological performance and aging resistance.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small noncoding RNAs of 18–25 bases. miRNAs are also important new biomarkers that can be used for disease diagnosis in the future. Studies have shown that miR-124 levels are significantly elevated during acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and play a key role in the cardiovascular system. A variety of methods have been established to detect myocardial infarction-related miRNAs. However, most require complex miRNA extraction and isolation, and these methods are virtually undetectable when RNA levels are low in the sample. It may lead to biased results. Thus, it is necessary to develop a technique that can detect miRNA without extracting it, which means that intracellular detection is of great significance. Here, we improved the traditional silicon spheres and obtained a biosensor that could effectively capture and detect specific noncoding nucleic acids through the layer-by-layer assembly method. The sensor is protected by hyaluronic acid so it can successfully escape the lysosome into the cell and achieve detection. With the help of a full-featured microplate reader, we determined that the detection limit of the biosensor could reach 1 fM, meeting the needs of intracellular detection. At the same time, we prepared an oxidative stress cardiomyocyte infarction model and successfully captured the overexpressed miR-124 in the infarcted cells to achieve in situ detection. This study could provide a new potential tool to develop miRNAs for sensitive diagnosis in AMI, and the proposed strategy implies its potential for biomedical research.

Abstract Purpose In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the bandage contact lens (BCLs) in the treatment of dry eye disease (DED) after complicated cataract or/and intraocular lens (IOL) surgery. Methods In this retrospective, single-centered, observational study, we collected data from 69 patients who underwent complicated cataract or/and IOL surgery. Of these, 35 cases wore their own BCLs immediately after the operation, while the other 34 cases did not have their own BCLs and were instead covered with gauze. The Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire, slit-lamp microscope examination, keratograph analysis, and Schirmer I test were measured at baseline, 1 week and 1 month postoperatively. Results In the BCL group, the score of the OSDI questionnaire was significantly decreased at 1 week and 1 month postoperatively compared with baseline levels (P = 0.000, collectively). Moreover, the fluorescein staining score of the BCL group was remarkably decreased 1-week and 1-month postoperatively compared with the non-BCL group (P = 0.000 and P = 0.000, respectively). Furthermore, the redness score of the BCL group was also better compared with the non-BCL group at 1 week and 1 month postoperatively (P = 0.014 and P = 0.004, respectively). Conclusions Complicated cataract or/and IOL surgery would intensify the DED. Early application of BCLs postoperatively improved patients’ comfort and alleviated dry eye-related symptoms and signs. Furthermore, this mechanism might involve the acceleration of corneal epithelial healing, the alleviation of ocular stress response and the stabilization of the tear film. Abstract This study is part of practitioner inquiry undertaken in an underprivileged, low-achieving primary school in Sydney, Australia, based in a Chinese as a Foreign Language (CFL) classroom with 9–10-year-olds. The aim was to unpack pedagogic discourse at the micro level of interactions, while delving into students’ perceptions of language learning experiences. Two data sources were used: an audio recording of lessons and students’ focus groups. By applying Bernstein’s pedagogic discourse and Fair Go Project’s (FGP) engagement framework, the findings reveal that consistently shifting pedagogic discourses were likely to overcome students’ social backgrounds and offer them engaging CFL learning experiences. The study makes an original contribution to providing CFL practitioners and pre-service teachers with a delicate, precise language to plan and chart courses, while guiding disadvantaged students through pedagogic mazes. This paper concludes with pedagogic implications for the social inclusion agenda.

AIM: To determine the teaching effects of a real-time three dimensional (3D) visualization system in the operating room for early-stage phacoemulsification training. METHODS: A total of 10 ophthalmology residents of the first-year postgraduate were included. All the residents were novices to cataract surgery. Real-time cataract surgical observations were performed using a custom-built 3D visualization system. The training lasted 4wk (32h) in all. A modified International Council of Ophthalmology's Ophthalmology Surgical Competency Assessment Rubric (ICO-OSCAR) containing 4 specific steps of cataract surgery was applied. The self-assessment (self) and expert-assessment (expert) were performed through the microsurgical attempts in the wet lab for each participant. Abstract Alopecia areata (AA) is a common non-scarring hair loss condition driven by the collapse of immune privilege and oxidative stress. The role of ferroptosis, a type of cell death linked to oxidative stress, in AA is yet to be explored, even though it's implicated in various diseases. Using transcriptome data from AA patients and controls from datasets GSE68801 and GSE80342, we aimed to identify AA diagnostic marker genes linked to ferroptosis. We employed Single-sample gene set enrichment analysis (ssGSEA) for immune cell infiltration evaluation. Correlations between ferroptosis-related differentially expressed genes (FRDEGs) and immune cells/functions were identified using Spearman analysis. Feature selection was done through Support vector machine-recursive feature elimination (SVM-RFE) and LASSO regression models. Validation was performed using the GSE80342 dataset, followed by hierarchical internal validation. We also constructed a nomogram to assess the predictive ability of FRDEGs in AA. Furthermore, the expression and distribution of these molecules were confirmed through immunofluorescence. Four genes, namely SLC40A1, LCN2, CREB5, and SLC7A11, were identified as markers for AA. A prediction model based on these genes showed high accuracy (AUC = 0.9052). Immunofluorescence revealed reduced expression of these molecules in AA patients compared to normal controls (NC), with SLC40A1 and CREB5 showing significant differences. Notably, they were primarily localized to the outer root sheath and in proximity to the sebaceous glands. Our study identified several ferroptosis-related genes associated with AA. These findings, emerging from the integration of immune cell infiltration analysis and machine learning, contribute to the evolving understanding of diagnostic and therapeutic strategies in AA. Importantly, this research lays a solid foundation for subsequent studies exploring the intricate relationship between AA and ferroptosis.

Abstract In situ observations under typhoon conditions are sparse and limited. Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) is an emerging technology that uses submarine optical-fiber (OF) cables to monitor the sea state. Here, we present DAS-based ocean current observations when a super typhoon passed overhead. The microseismic noise induced by ocean surface gravity waves (OSGWs) during Typhoon Muifa (2022) is observed in the ~0.08–0.38 Hz frequency band, with high-frequency (>0.3 Hz) component being tidally modulated. The OSGW propagation along the entire cable is successfully revealed via frequency–wavenumber analysis. Further, a method based on the current-induced Doppler shifts of DAS-recorded OSGW dispersions is proposed to calculate both speeds and directions of horizontal ocean currents. The measured current is consistent with the tidally induced sea-level fluctuations and sea-surface winds observed at a nearby ocean buoy. These observations demonstrate the feasibility of monitoring the ocean current under typhoon conditions using DAS-instrumented cables.

Objective: Few studies use all nodule burdens to specify the prognosis of multinodular goiter (MNG) following radiofrequency ablation (RFA), so this study addresses this question for MNG after completely ablating dominant nodules. Methods: The RFA indications for MNG include 2–5 benign nodules with over 50% normal tissue on ultrasound, 1–3 well-defined benign dominant nodules on cytology, largest diameter ≥20 mm and/or with clinical complaints, and patient refusal or unable to undergo surgery. A retrospective study of 185 MNG patients with completely ablated dominant nodules in a single-session RFA was conducted. The efficacy and complications were evaluated at 1, 6, 12 months, and yearly thereafter. Based on retreatment risks, progressive disease (PD), stable disease (SD), and complete relief (CR) were introduced to assess all nodule load changes. PD was clarified as having new/non-target nodules that newly appeared to ACR TI-RADS≥4, or new/enlarged non-target nodules ≥1 cm. Results: The initial ablation ratios of target nodules were 100% at one month. During a mean 22.38 ± 13.75 months (range, 12–60 months), the volume reduction rate of ablated nodules was 98.25% at 24 months without regrowth. Cosmetic and symptomatic scores decreased to 1 and 0, respectively, after 48 months. Of the patients, 9.7% (18/185) had PD and the retreatment rate was 2.2% (4/185). The complication rate was 2.7% (5/185). Conclusion: RFA provides cosmetic and symptomatic relief for an average of two years. RFA is a useful minimally invasive treatment modality for selected MNG patients.

Objective At present, intraoperative ultrasound was widely used in spinal surgery. But there have been no reports on the use of intraoperative ultrasound in lateral decubitus position spinal surgery. The authors’ research objective was to describe the applications of intraoperative ultrasound in spinal trauma surgery when performed in the lateral decubitus position. Methods Six patients with polytrauma who underwent surgery for spinal trauma between June 2020 and March 2022 and could not be operated on using a posterior approach in the prone position. All six patients underwent surgery in the lateral decubitus position. During surgery, a capsular bag had been designed and surgical field can be filled with normal saline for acoustic coupling, and then ultrasound was used to observe and guide decompression, and assess injuries of the neural elements such as the spinal cord. The data of preoperative and postoperative (12 months) American Spinal Injury Association impairment scale (AIS), follow‐up time, operation time, blood loss, ultrasound signal change of spinal cord, ultrasound guide decompression, internal fixation (12 months), and fracture healing(12 months) were collected. Results The study included four males and two females whose ages ranged from 19 to 56 years old (41.5 ± 13.06 years old). Follow‐up times ranged from 12 to 20 months (14.33 ± 2.75 months). The operation times ranged from 195 to 248 mins (222.16 ± 16.86 mins). The estimated volume of blood loss ranged from 280 to 450 mL (383.33 ± 55.58 mL). The six cases’ AIS (preoperative vs. postoperative) were A versus A, C versus D, A versus B, B versus B, B versus C, and B versus C. Intraoperative ultrasound was performed successfully in all patients using our designed method. Intraoperative ultrasound observation revealed varying degrees of changes in spinal cord echo in all patients. Intraoperative ultrasound provided excellent assistance in spinal cord decompression during surgery. The surgery was completed successfully with no surgery‐related complications till the last follow‐up. At the time of last follow‐up (median time of 12 months) satisfactory fracture reduction and good internal fixation was confirmed on postoperative computed tomography scans and radiographs. Conclusions The authors represented the technology of intraoperative ultrasound in spinal trauma surgery when performed in the lateral decubitus position. This technology solves how to apply intraoperative ultrasound in lateral decubitus position.

Abstract Background Off-targeted distribution of chemotherapeutic drugs causes severe side effects, further leading to poor prognosis and patient compliance. Ligand/receptor-mediated targeted drug delivery can improve drug accumulation in the tumor but it always attenuated by protein corona barriers. Results To address these problems, a radically different strategy is proposed that can leave the off-targeted drugs inactive but activate the tumor-distributed drugs for cancer-targeting therapy in a tumor microenvironment-independent manner. The feasibility and effectiveness of this strategy is demonstrated by developing an ultrasound (US)-activated prodrug-loaded liposome (CPBSN38L) comprising the sonosensitizer chlorin e6 (Ce6)-modified lipids and the prodrug of pinacol boronic ester-conjugated SN38 (PBSN38). Once CPBSN38L is accumulated in the tumor and internalized into the cancer cells, under US irradiation, the sonosensitizer Ce6 rapidly induces extensive production of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), thereby initiating a cascade amplified ROS-responsive activation of PBSN38 to release the active SN38 for inducing cell apoptosis. If some of the injected CPBSN38L is distributed into normal tissues, the inactive PBSN38 exerts no pharmacological activity on normal cells. CPBSN38L exhibited strong anticancer activity in multiple murine tumor models of colon adenocarcinoma and hepatocellular carcinoma with no chemotherapy-induced side effects, compared with the standard first-line anticancer drugs irinotecan and topotecan. Conclusions This study established a side-effect-evitable, universal, and feasible strategy for cancer-targeting therapy. Graphical Abstract

Carbon fibers have often been added to concrete as reinforcement. Eco-friendly concrete with industrial by-products has been widely studied and applied as green building materials. Studying the workability and printability of eco-friendly concrete with carbon fibers is worthwhile. The workability and printability of eco-friendly concrete are dominating factors that ensure that printing can be carried out smoothly. This study uses a combination of experiments and numerical simulations to study the printing performance of carbon fiber-reinforced eco-friendly concrete (CFREFC). The workability and printability of 9 mixes of 3D printing CFREFC under various combinations of different water-binder (w/b) ratio levels and superplasticizer (SP) dosages were tested. Two methods, namely the consistency and fluidity tests, were used to characterize the printability. After consistency and mortar fluidity tests, the 9 mixtures were printed to get the printing performance. Finally, the relationship between the workability and printability of 3D printing CFREFC was established. The condition numbered M7 (w/b = 0.4, SP = 0.5) in the selected experimental group was used as the source of its simulation parameter. The result shows that it is feasible to characterize printability using workability, i.e., consistency and fluidity, which increase with the increase of w/b and SP dosage. Under the printing parameters of the HC1008 printer were determined, i.e., 20 mm of nozzle size, 50 mm/s of printing speed, 30 rpm of material extrusion speed, and 14 mm layer height, the fresh CFREFC was not suitable for 3DP application when its consistency is less than 48.99 mm and more than 81.96 mm, or when its fluidity is less than 166.72 mm and more than 200.93 mm. When the consistency is from 56.34 to 65.61 mm, and the fluidity is from 172.18 to 183.30 mm, the printability of CFREFC is the best under the same printing parameters. The simulation results indicated that with the increased number of printing layers, the bottom of the printed model would be deformed by the gradual increase in pressure, and a specific height loss would occur, which was consistent with the experimental results.

This study investigates the influence of High-Toughness Polypropylene (HTPP) fiber content (0 %, 0.3 %, 0.6 %, 0.9 %) on the axial compressive performance of ceramsite concrete. Four sets of ceramsite concrete cube and prism specimens were prepared, and the cube compressive strength and full stress-strain curves for each set were tested. Based on the experimental results, it analyzed the variation characteristics of HTPP fibers on the stress-strain curve of ceramic concrete at different stages, studied the peak stress, peak strain, elastic modulus, toughness, and energy absorption capacity of ceramic concrete. Finally, the stress-strain curve has been fitted. The results indicate that: HTPP fibers can significantly enhance the strength and toughness of ceramic concrete, the compressive strength of the cube increased by 23.8 %, the axial compressive strength increased by 19.0 %, the residual stress increased by 143.0 %, the absolute modulus increased by 164.1 %, the toughness increased by 51.5 %, and the energy dissipation coefficient increased by 9.4 %. By fitting the experimental curve, the mathematical expression for the uniaxial compressive stress-strain curve of ceramic concrete reinforced with high tenacity polypropylene (HTPP) fibers has been proposed. The model matches well with the experimental results, which provides a theoretical basis for the structural analysis and design of this type of concrete.

This study investigates the effects of soybean lecithin (SL) on the growth, fatty acid composition, lipid metabolism, and gonadal development of rice field eels. Fourteen-month-old eels were fed either fish oil diets or varying levels of dietary soybean lecithin (0 %, 1.4 %, and 2.8 %) for 10 weeks. Dietary SL had no significant impact on growth, whereas 1.4 % SL led to a significant decrease in moisture content and an increase in crude protein content in eels. The content of both saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids increased in muscles fed the higher SL diet, with a concurrent decline in saturated fatty acids and an increase in polyunsaturated fatty acids detected in the liver. The expression levels of genes related to lipid synthesis, including accα and PPARγ, and genes related to polyunsaturated fatty acid synthesis, such as pla2g4a, fad2 and scd, were significantly increased in the liver of eels fed with 1.4 % SL diet. SL supplementation enhances lipid transport and antioxidant capacity in the liver, reduces fat deposition, and protects the liver from damage. Hepatosomatic index of fish in the SL1.4 % and SL2.8 % groups decreased. Supplementation of the diet with 1.4 % SL led to a significant decrease in the content of saturated fatty acids and an increase in the content of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the gonads, with a significant increase in arachidonic acid levels. The gonadosomatic index also increased with increasing dietary SL content. Rice field eels fed diets containing SL exhibited elevated serum levels of E2, delayed ovary-to-testis transition, and a preference for retaining the female state. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with SL increased the proportion of highly unsaturated fatty acids in the tissues, enhanced lipid metabolism in the liver, and improved antioxidant capacity. Furthermore, SL supplementation has been demonstrated to promote ovarian development and delay sex reversal in rice field eels.

Waxy maize (Zea mays L. sinensis Kulesh) is highly regarded for its high nutritional content and unique taste. Although the stalks and leaves contain high carbohydrate levels after ear harvesting, inadequate crude protein (CP) limits the utilization and promotion of waxy maize silage in animal husbandry. In this study, waxy maize and fodder soybeans were mixed for sowing in different proportions [1:0 (CK), 1:1 (A1), 1:2 (A2), 1:3 (A3), and 1:4 (A4)] to investigate the effects of different mixing ratios on the growth of the waxy maize, the chemical indices, fermentation quality, and the microbial community of the mixed silage after ear harvesting. The mixed planting of waxy maize and fodder soybeans in different proportions had no effect on the yield and quality of the waxy maize ears and increased the aboveground biomass after ear harvesting. After ear harvesting, the neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) contents significantly decreased, and the CP content and relative feeding value (RFV) gradually increased in the mixed silage. The pH of the treatments was lower than 4.2 except for A4, and the lowest ammonia nitrogen (AN) concentration was observed in A3. With increasing proportions of fodder soybeans, the abundance of beneficial bacteria increased and that of harmful bacteria decreased; Firmicutes and Lactobacillus were the dominant phylum and genus, respectively, and both increased gradually. Redundancy analysis (RDA) revealed that the fermentation indices affecting the microbial community composition in the silage were inconsistent among the different mixed sowing combinations. The Mantel test showed that the composition of the microbial communities in the treatments was significantly correlated with the ADF, water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC), and propionic acid (PA) contents. Comprehensive analysis revealed that the optimal mixed sowing ratio of waxy maize to fodder soybeans was 1:3, and waxy maize and fodder soybeans silage can increase the utilization of aboveground biomass and improve the fermentation quality and feeding quality of silage by changing the microbial community. These findings lay a certain theoretical foundation for improving the utilization of waxy maize.

Background and aim: Diabetes-associated cognitive impairment (DCI) is a prevalent complication of diabetes. However, there is a lack of viable strategies for preventing and treating DCI. This study aims to explore the efficacy of baicalin (Bai) in attenuating DCI and elucidating the underlying mechanisms. Experimental procedure: GK rats fed a high-fat and high-glucose diet were utilized to investigate the therapeutic potential of Bai. Cognitive function was assessed using the Morris water maze and novel object recognition tests. To gain insight into the molecular mechanisms underlying Bai’s neuro-protective effects, co-cultured BV2/HT22 cells were established under high-glucose (HG) stimulation. The modes of action of Bai were subsequently confirmed in vivo using the DCI model in db/db mice. Key results: Bai restored cognitive and spatial memory and attenuated neuron loss, along with reducing expressions of Aβ and phosphorylated Tau protein in diabetic GK rats. At the cellular level, Bai exhibited potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects against HG stimulation. These effects were associated with the upregulation of Nrf2 and supressed Keap1 levels. Consistent with these in vitro findings, similar mechanisms were observed in db/db mice. The significant neuroprotective effects of Bai were abolished when co-administered with ATRA, a Nrf2 blocker, in db/db mice, confirming that KEAP1-Nrf2 signaling pathway was responsible for the observed effect. Conclusions and implications: Bai demonstrates a great therapeutic potential for attenuating DCI. The antioxidant defense and anti-inflammatory actions of Bai were mediated through the KEAP1-Nrf2 axis. These findings advance our understanding of potential treatment approaches for DCI, a common complication associated with diabetes.

Abstract Background Depression is the most common psychological disorder in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D). However, the characteristics of microbiota and metabolites in these patients remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate microbial and metabolomic profiles and identify novel biomarkers for T1D with depression. Methods A case–control study was conducted in a total of 37 T1D patients with depression (TD+), 35 T1D patients without depression (TD−), and 29 healthy controls (HCs). 16S rRNA gene sequencing and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS) metabolomics analysis were conducted to investigate the characteristics of microbiota and metabolites. The association between altered microbiota and metabolites was explored by Spearman's rank correlation and visualized by a heatmap. The microbial signatures to discriminate TD+ from TD− were identified by a random forest (RF) classifying model. Results In microbiota, 15 genera enriched in TD− and 2 genera enriched in TD+, and in metabolites, 14 differential metabolites (11 upregulated and 3 downregulated) in TD+ versus TD− were identified. Additionally, 5 genera (including Phascolarctobacterium, Butyricimonas, and Alistipes from altered microbiota) demonstrated good diagnostic power (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.73; 95% CI, 0.58–0.87). In the correlation analysis, Butyricimonas was negatively correlated with glutaric acid (r = −0.28, p = 0.015) and malondialdehyde (r = −0.30, p = 0.012). Both Phascolarctobacterium (r = 0.27, p = 0.022) and Alistipes (r = 0.31, p = 0.009) were positively correlated with allopregnanolone. Conclusions T1D patients with depression were characterized by unique profiles of gut microbiota and serum metabolites. Phascolarctobacterium, Butyricimonas, and Alistipes could predict the risk of T1D with depression. These findings provide further evidence that the microbiota–gut–brain axis is involved in T1D with depression.

IntroductionPhysical and mental health problems among pilots affect their working state and impact flight safety. Although pilots’ physical and mental health problems have become increasingly prominent, their health has not been taken seriously. This study aimed to clarify challenges and support needs related to psychological and physical health among pilots to inform development of a more scientific and comprehensive physical and mental health system for civil aviation pilots.MethodsThis qualitative study recruited pilots from nine civil aviation companies. Focus group interviews via an online conference platform were conducted in August 2022. Colaizzi analysis was used to derive themes from the data and explore pilots’ experiences, challenges, and support needs.ResultsThe main sub-themes capturing pilots’ psychological and physical health challenges were: (1) imbalance between family life and work; (2) pressure from assessment and physical examination eligibility requirements; (3) pressure from worries about being infected with COVID-19; (4) nutrition deficiency during working hours; (5) changes in eating habits because of the COVID-19 pandemic; (6) sleep deprivation; (7) occupational diseases; (8) lack of support from the company in coping with stress; (9) pilots’ yearly examination standards; (10) support with sports equipment; (11) respecting planned rest time; and (12) isolation periods.DiscussionThe interviewed pilots experienced major psychological pressure from various sources, and their physical health condition was concerning. We offer several suggestions that could be addressed to improve pilots’ physical and mental health. However, more research is needed to compare standard health measures for pilots around the world in order to improve their physical and mental health and contribute to overall aviation safety.

ABSTRACTLiquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS) plays a crucial role in various biological processes in eukaryotic organisms, including immune responses in mammals. However, the specific function of LLPS in immune responses in Drosophila melanogaster remains poorly understood. Cactin, a highly conserved protein in eukaryotes, is involved in a non-canonical signaling pathway associated with Nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB)-related pathways in Drosophila. In this study, we investigated the role of Cactin in LLPS and its implications for immune response modulation. We discovered that Cactin undergoes LLPS, forming droplet-like particles, primarily mediated by its intrinsically disordered region (IDR). Utilizing immunoprecipitation and mass spectrometry analysis, we identified two phosphorylation sites at serine residues 99 and 104 within the IDR1 domain of Cactin. Co-immunoprecipitation and mass spectrometry further revealed phosphoglycerate kinase (PGK) as a Cactin-interacting protein responsible for regulating its phosphorylation. Phosphorylation of Cactin by PGK induced a transition from stable aggregates to dynamic liquid droplets, enhancing its ability to interact with other components in the cellular environment. Overexpression of PGK inhibited Drosophila C virus (DCV) replication, while PGK knockdown increased replication. DCV infection also increased Cactin phosphorylation. We also found that phosphorylation enhances the antiviral ability of Cactin by promoting liquid-phase droplet formation. These findings demonstrate the role of Cactin-phase separation in regulating DCV replication and highlight the modulation of its antiviral function through phosphorylation, providing insights into the interplay between LLPS and antiviral defense mechanisms.IMPORTANCELiquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS) plays an integral role in various biological processes in eukaryotic organisms. Although several studies have highlighted its crucial role in modulating immune responses in mammals, its function in immune responses in Drosophila melanogaster remains poorly understood. We identified that phosphoglycerate kinase (PGK), an essential enzyme in the glycolytic pathway, phosphorylates Cactin, facilitating its transition from a relatively stable aggregated state to a more dynamic liquid droplet phase during the phase separation process. This transformation allows Cactin to rapidly interact with other cellular components, enhancing its antiviral properties and ultimately inhibiting virus replication. These findings expand our understanding of the role of LLPS in the antiviral defense mechanism, shedding light on the intricate mechanisms underlying immune responses in D. melanogaster.

Abstract Background Antiretroviral therapy (ART) can reduce viral load in individuals infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV); however, some HIV-infected individuals still cannot achieve optimal immune recovery even after ART. Hence, we described the profile of peripheral immune cells and explored the association with disease progression in patients infected with HIV-1. Methods Mass cytometry analysis was used to characterize the circulating immune cells of 20 treatment-naïve (TNs), 20 immunological non-responders (INRs), 20 immunological responders (IRs), and 10 healthy controls (HCs). Correlation analysis was conducted between cell subpopulation percentages and indicators including HIV-1 cell-associated (CA)-RNA, DNA, CD4+ T cell count, and CD4/CD8 ratio. Results Global activation, immunosenescence, and exhaustion phenotypes were observed in myeloid cells and T cells from individuals with HIV-1 infection. We also found that specific subsets or clusters of myeloid, CD4+ T, and CD8+ T cells were significantly lost or increased in TN individuals, which could be partially restored after receiving ART. The percentages of several subpopulations correlated with HIV-1 CA-RNA, DNA, CD4+ T cell count, and CD4/CD8 ratio, suggesting that changes in immune cell composition were associated with therapeutic efficacy. Conclusion These data provide a complete profile of immune cell subpopulations or clusters that are associated with disease progression during chronic HIV-1 infection, which will improve understanding regarding the mechanism of incomplete immune recovery in INRs.

AbstractContext Gualou Guizhi decoction (GLGZD) is an ancient Chinese classical prescription widely used to treat ischemic stroke. However, the molecular mechanisms of GLGZD promoting angiogenesis are unavailable.Objective This study investigates the angiogenesis effect of GLGZD as well as its mechanism.Materials and methods Ischemic stroke was established by middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion (MCAO/R) in male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. The GLGZD groups received GLGZD (3.6, 7.2 and 14.4 g/kg) orally. Oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R) model was constructed in HUVECs receiving GLGZD medicated serum (MS). MRI, H&E staining, qRT-PCR, western blot and immunofluorescence methods were employed. miRNA210 inhibitor was employed to confirm the effects of GLGZD on promoting angiogenesis. Dual luciferase assay was used to verify the binding of miRNA210 with HIF mRNA.Results GLGZD treatment improved neurological function (by 27%), alleviated neuronal injury (by 76%), reduced infarct volume (by 74%) and increased microvessel density (by fourfold) in vivo. In vitro data had also shown that GLGZD caused proliferation of the cells (by 58%), their migration, and eventual formation of tubes (by threefold). Simultaneously, GLGZD enhanced the levels of angiogenesis-related molecules and activated the HIF/VEGF signalling pathway. Surprisingly, the beneficial effects of GLGZD on post-stroke angiogenesis and neurological recovery were weakened by miRNA210 inhibitor, and also abolished the mediation of proangiogenic factors. miRNA210 directly targeted HIF mRNA.Discussion and conclusions GLGZD enhances angiogenesis via activation of the miRNA210/HIF/VEGF signalling pathway, suggesting it can be a novel application as an effective angiogenic formula for stroke recovery.

Abstract Objective This study assessed the impacts of in vitro culture times of cleavage embryos on clinical pregnancy outcomes. Methods This retrospective cohort study was performed at the Reproductive Medicine Department of Hainan Modern Women and Children’s Hospital in China between January 2018 and December 2022. Patients who first underwent frozen embryo transfer with in vitro fertilization/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF/ICSI) cycles on day 3 were included. According to the time of embryo culture after thawing, the embryos were divided into long-term culture group(18-20 h) and short-term culture group (2-4 h). The clinical pregnancy rate was regarded as he primary outcome. To minimize confounding factors and reduce selection bias, the propensity score matching was used to balance the effects of known confounding factors and to reduce selection bias. Stratified analyses and multiple logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the risk factors affecting the clinical pregnancy outcomes after matching. Results General characteristics between two groups were comparable after matching. In the long-term culture group, 266/381 (69.81%) embryos had more than 10 blastomeres, and 75/381 (19.68%) reached the morula stage. After overnight culture, the implantation rate (27.97% vs. 14.28%, P = 0.018) and clinical pregnancy rate (38.46% vs. 22.5%, P = 0.05) were increased in the group with proliferating blastomeres. The long-term culture group trended to have a higher clinical pregnancy rate compared with the short-term culture group (35.74% vs. 29.79%). No statistical differences in clinical pregnancy outcomes between the two groups were observed after matching, including the rates of implantation (25.46% vs23.98%), miscarriages (25% vs. 22.85%), ongoing pregnancy rate (76.2% vs. 77.15%) and live birth rate (26.8% vs. 22.98%). Stratified analyses were performed according to the age of the patients. After matching, there were no significant differences in the clinical pregnancy, implantation and miscarriage rates between the two groups for patients > 35 or ≤ 35 years of age. Subgroup analyses were performed according to the quality of the transferred embryos. There were no significant differences in the clinical outcomes, between two groups after embryos transferred with the same quality. Multivariate Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the influencing factors of clinical pregnancy outcomes after matching. A corneal epithelial-stromal defect is recognized as a major contributor to corneal scarring. Given the rising prevalence of blindness caused by corneal scarring, increasing attention has been focused on corneal epithelial-stromal defects. Currently, the etiology and pathogenesis of these defects remain inadequately understood, necessitating further investigation through experimental research. Various modeling methods exist both domestically and internationally, each with distinct adaptive conditions, advantages, and disadvantages. This review primarily aims to summarize the techniques used to establish optimal animal models of corneal epithelial-stromal injury, including mechanical modeling, chemical alkali burns, post-refractive surgery infections, and genetic engineering. The intention is to provide valuable insights for studying the mechanisms underlying corneal epithelial-stromal injury and the development of corresponding therapeutic interventions.

To address the issue of insufficient durability of traditional modified emulsified asphalt in the application of cold mix and cold paving anti-skid wear layers, this study utilizes cationic waterborne polyurethane (PU+) for composite modification to enhance adhesion and performance across a range of temperatures. Initially, composite-modified emulsified asphalt samples were prepared with varying dosages of PU+ according to a gradient method. Routine performance tests were conducted on the evaporated residues for analysis. Advanced rheological tests, including temperature sweep (TS), frequency sweep (FS), linear amplitude sweep (LAS), and multi-stress creep recovery (MSCR) tests, were performed using a dynamic shear rheometer (DSR). Surface free energy (SFE) tests were conducted with a fully automated surface tension meter (STM). A comprehensive evaluation of the high-temperature rheological properties, fatigue properties, adhesion properties, and water damage resistance of the modified emulsified asphalt residues was carried out. Chemical changes before and after modification were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and the distribution of polymers in the evaporated residue was observed using fluorescence microscopy (FM). The results demonstrated that cationic waterborne polyurethane significantly enhanced the fatigue and adhesion properties of SBS-modified emulsified asphalt, but it also weakened the water damage resistance of asphalt. MSCR tests revealed that the addition of cationic waterborne polyurethane might reduce the elastic recovery performance of modified asphalt, thereby weakening its resistance to rutting. Among the samples, the modified asphalt with a PU+ content of 6% exhibited good high-temperature shear resistance and elastic recovery performance, demonstrating the best anti-rutting performance.

Expanded polystyrene concrete (EPSC) is increasingly utilized in buildings as a green building material. To investigate the effect of high-tenacity polypropylene (HTPP) fibers on the carbonation resistance (CR) of EPSC, five groups of EPSC specimens with HTPP fiber volume fractions of 0%, 0.6%, 0.9%, 1.2%, and 1.5% were prepared. Rapid carbonation tests were conducted to measure the carbonation depth (CD) and uniaxial compression strength (UCS) of the specimens at different carbonation ages (3, 7, 14, and 28 days). The CD and UCS of the specimens were calculated and analyzed. The results indicated that the HTPP fibers dramatically improved the CR of EPSC, with a decrease in the CD of up to 29.5% at 28 days. A model for predicting the CD of EPSC was developed. The model for the strength after carbonation also showed good agreement with the experimental results. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to examine the microstructure of the HTPP-reinforced EPSC, while the mechanism of HTPP fibers to enhance the CR of EPSC was elucidated. The findings of this study provide valuable insights for the application of EPSC as a structural material.

Oil palm is a versatile oil crop with numerous applications. Significant progress has been made in applying histological techniques in oil palm research in recent years. Whole genome sequencing of oil palm has been carried out to explain the function and structure of the order genome, facilitating the development of molecular markers and the construction of genetic maps, which are crucial for studying important traits and genetic resources in oil palm. Transcriptomics provides a powerful tool for studying various aspects of plant biology, including abiotic and biotic stresses, fatty acid composition and accumulation, and sexual reproduction, while proteomics and metabolomics provide opportunities to study lipid synthesis and stress responses, regulate fatty acid composition based on different gene and metabolite levels, elucidate the physiological mechanisms in response to abiotic stresses, and explain intriguing biological processes in oil palm. This paper summarizes the current status of oil palm research from a multi-omics perspective and hopes to provide a reference for further in-depth research on oil palm.

To address the challenges of slow curing speed and suboptimal microwave absorption during the paving of cold-mixed and cold-laid asphalt mixtures, this study introduces SiC-Fe3O4 composite material (SF) into emulsified asphalt mixtures to enhance microwave absorption and accelerate curing via microwave heating. Initially, based on the maximum density curve theory, an appropriate mineral aggregate gradation was designed, and the optimal ratio of emulsified asphalt mixture was determined through mixing tests, cohesion tests, wet wheel wear tests, and load wheel sand adhesion tests. Subsequently, the influence of SF content on the mixing performance of emulsified asphalt mixtures was analyzed through mixing and consistency tests. Finally, the microwave absorption performance of the mixture was evaluated by designing microwave heating tests under different conditions, using temperature indicators and quality indicators. The experimental results indicate that when SF content ranges from 0% to 4%, the mixing performance of the emulsified asphalt mixture meets specification requirements. The dosage of SF, SF composite ratio, and microwave power significantly impact microwave absorption performance, whereas environmental temperature has a relatively minor effect. The optimal mix ratio for the emulsified asphalt mixture is mineral aggregate:modified emulsified asphalt:water:cement = 100:12.8:6:1. The ideal SF dosage is 4%, with an optimal SiC to Fe3O4 composite ratio of 1:1, and a suitable microwave power range of 600–1000 W.

A foundation pit is constructed in the floodplain of Yangtze River, and a deep and thick layer of large-particle pebble gravel exists below the base slab, thus forming a connected supply channel with the adjacent Yangtze River. The large water volume, high water pressure, and strong permeability of this layer bring great risks to the foundation pit construction. In view of the fact that conventional waterproof curtain construction technologies such as the deep mixing column and high-pressure jet grouting column cannot meet the engineering requirements under these kinds of geological and environmental conditions, a new waterproof curtain construction technology that combines the trenching technology of the diaphragm wall with the TRD (Trench cutting Remixing Deep wall) technology is proposed, i.e., the trenching-and-replacing-style TRD technology, as well as the construction process of this technology, is presented. After the waterproof curtain is built using the proposed technology, the strength, integrity, uniformity, and service performance of the waterproof curtain wall are tested and evaluated by the comprehensive methods of coring, borehole television imaging, resistivity CT, and a group well pumping test. The results show that the proposed technology overcomes the adverse effects of underlying large-particle pebble gravel layer, and the waterproof curtain built by it effectively cuts off the hydraulic connection inside and outside the pit. The technical proposal can provide useful references for similar projects.

ObjectivesThe present study aimed to develop a radiomics nomogram based on conventional ultrasound (CUS) to preoperatively distinguish high tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and low TILs in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) patients.MethodsIn the present study, 145 TNBC patients were retrospectively included. Pathological evaluation of TILs in the hematoxylin and eosin sections was set as the gold standard. The patients were randomly allocated into training dataset and validation dataset with a ratio of 7:3. Clinical features (age and CUS features) and radiomics features were collected. Then, the Rad-score model was constructed after the radiomics feature selection. The clinical features model and clinical features plus Rad-score (Clin+RS) model were built using logistic regression analysis. Furthermore, the performance of the models was evaluated by analyzing the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, calibration curve, and decision curve analysis (DCA).ResultsUnivariate analysis and LASSO regression were employed to identify a subset of 25 radiomics features from a pool of 837 radiomics features, followed by the calculation of Rad-score. The Clin+RS integrated model, which combined posterior echo and Rad-score, demonstrated better predictive performance compared to both the Rad-score model and clinical model, achieving AUC values of 0.848 in the training dataset and 0.847 in the validation dataset.ConclusionThe Clin+RS integrated model, incorporating posterior echo and Rad-score, demonstrated an acceptable preoperative evaluation of the TIL level. The Clin+RS integrated nomogram holds tremendous potential for preoperative individualized prediction of the TIL level in TNBC.

In order to avoid random risks in the power system and rationally allocate power to improve power consumption efficiency, this study designed a power system optimization model based on value-at-risk method, replaced the independent variables of particle swarm optimization algorithm with discrete quantities, and used discrete binary particle swarm optimization algorithm to solve the problem. The experimental results show that compared with other algorithms, DSO has the fastest downward trend, the smallest fluctuation and the best convergence. In the case of distribution power supply and optimization, the node voltage of power network operation is 0.97, the power loss is 0.54, and the system risk value is low. It is indicated that the addition of wind power generation and solar power generation, and the optimization of distribution network can effectively improve the operation of power system. It can be seen that the power system optimization model can effectively predict the risk value, and improve the accuracy of prediction and evaluation, which has certain practical significance and economic value in the field of power grid.

Introduction: The root of Reynoutria multiflora (Thunb.) Moldenke (RM) has been used widely in formulations of herbal medicines in China for centuries. Raw R. multiflora (RRM) should be processed before use to reduce toxicity and increase efficacy. However, detailed regulation of the processing endpoint is lacking, and the duration of processing can vary considerably. We conducted in-depth research on stilbene glycosides in RM at different processing times. Previously, we discovered that 219 stilbene glycosides changed markedly in quantity and content. Therefore, we proposed that processing causes changes in various chemical groups.Methods: To better explain the mechanism of RM processing for toxicity reduction and efficacy enhancement, we used a method of tandem mass spectrometry described previously to research gallic acid based and catechin based metabolites.Results: A total of 259 metabolites based on gallic acid and 112 metabolites based on catechins were identified. Among these, the peak areas of 157 gallic acid and 81 catechins gradually decreased, those of another 71 gallic acid and 30 catechins first increased and then decreased, those of 14 gallic acid and 1 catechin gradually increased. However, 17 of the gallic acids showed no significant changes. We speculate that many gallic acid metabolites hydrolyze to produce gallic acid; moreover, the dimers/trimers of catechins, after being cleaved into catechins, epicatechin, gallic acid catechins, and epicatechin monomers, are cleaved into gallic acid and protocatechualdehyde under high temperature and high humidity, subsequently participating in the Maillard reaction and browning reactions.Discussion: We showed that processing led to changes in chemical groups, clarification of the groups of secondary metabolites could provide a basis for research on the pharmacological and toxic mechanisms of RM, as well as the screening of related markers.

Rural residents are exposed to both particulate and gaseous pesticides in the indoor-outdoor nexus in their daily routine. However, previous personal exposure assessment mostly focuses on single aspects of the exposure, such as indoor or gaseous exposure, leading to severe cognition bias to evaluate the exposure risks. In this study, residential dust and silicone wristbands (including stationary and personal wearing ones) were used to screen pesticides in different phases and unfold the hidden characteristics of personal exposure via indoor-outdoor nexus in intensive agricultural area. Mento-Carlo Simulation was performed to assess the probabilistic exposure risk by transforming adsorbed pesticides from wristbands into air concentration, which explores a new approach to integrate particulate (dust) and gaseous (silicone wristbands) pesticide exposures in indoor and outdoor environment. Summary: The enhanced use of protective materials and chemicals during the COVID-19 pandemic has probably increased river pollution, but the effects of country-specific measures on multiple pollutants in rivers worldwide are not well documented. Here, we use an updated, spatially explicit water quality model to estimate the effects of the increased use of hand soap (triclosan), personal protective equipment and packaging materials (plastics), painkillers (diclofenac), and reduced transportation (microplastics from car tires) on river pollution in 10,226 sub-basins worldwide. Model results indicate that, globally, COVID-19 measures increased river pollution with macroplastics by 56%, triclosan by 33%, and diclofenac by 50%. Notably, only microplastics from car tires decreased. We identified priority sub-basins and pollutants across the globe for which water pollution control strategies should consider the impacts of COVID-19 measures. For these sub-basins, our results can inform the development of strategies for ameliorating the impacts of measures taken during the COVID-19 pandemic. Science for society: Globally, river pollution is a growing concern, given its potential impacts on ecosystems. COVID-19 has likely compounded this pollution via an increased use of products such as masks, hand sanitizers, and painkillers. However, we do not have a clear understanding of pollutant types, at which locations pollution might have increased, or the extent of any increase. This hinders the development of pollution control strategies in the worst-affected river basins. Countries encouraged or enforced varying strategies to combat the pandemic; therefore, assessing the impact of these differing COVID-19 measures on river pollution requires models that capture country-specific strategies.

Background: Adipokines and inflammatory cytokines (ADICs) play important roles in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This study aimed to compare the changes of ADIC levels (ΔADICs) in patients with newly diagnosed T2DM treated with different antihyperglycemic agents, and further investigate the impact of these changes on metabolic indices, β-cell function and insulin resistance (IR). Methods: Four hundred and sixteen patients with newly diagnosed T2DM from 25 centers in China randomly received 48-week intervention with exenatide, insulin or pioglitazone. Anthropometric and laboratory data, indices of β-cell function and IR, and levels of AIDCs, including interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), leptin, and fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) were detected at baseline and the end of the study. Abstract The number of international students in Chinese higher education has expanded unprecedentedly over the past decade. As opposed to neoliberal marketisation, this expansion is backed up by a community of shared future for mankind rationale, which is well articulated within the policy rhetoric as well as keynote speeches by Chinese senior government officials. However, there is a paucity of research and thoresiation into how Chinese universities may be contributing to this strategic priority in specific contexts. This article presents a case study that examines the aspirations of a cohort of African international students enroled in a Chinese language programme in a vocational college in Southeast China. Their narratives highlight the previously neglected relevance of international higher education and Chinese language learning to the process of global citizenship education. The participants in this study displayed positive dispositions of global citizenship such as an in-depth understanding of the world, promoting hargramony and contributing to the common good. As such, this article underscores the affordances and possibilities of Chinese language learning in international higher education, in addressing a torrent of mounting concerns of ‘China threat’ to the world order.
