Abstract Background The purpose of this study was to improve the deep learning (DL) model performance in predicting and classifying IMRT gamma passing rate (GPR) by using input features related to machine parameters and a class balancing technique. Methods A total of 2348 fields from 204 IMRT plans for patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma were retrospectively collected to form a dataset. Input feature maps, including fluence, leaf gap, leaf speed of both banks, and corresponding errors, were constructed from the dynamic log files. The SHAP framework was employed to compute the impact of each feature on the model output for recursive feature elimination. A series of UNet++ based models were trained on the obtained eight feature sets with three fine-tuning methods including the standard mean squared error (MSE) loss, a re-sampling technique, and a proposed weighted MSE loss (WMSE). Differences in mean absolute error, area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), sensitivity, and specificity were compared between the different models. Abstract This report presents liquid metal-based infrared-modulating materials and systems with multiple modes to regulate the infrared reflection. Inspired by the brightness adjustment in chameleon skin, shape-morphing liquid metal droplets in silicone elastomer (Ecoflex) matrix are used to resemble the dispersed “melanophores”. In the system, Ecoflex acts as hormone to drive the deformation of liquid metal droplets. Both total and specular reflectance-based infrared camouflage are achieved. Typically, the total and specular reflectances show change of ~44.8% and 61.2%, respectively, which are among the highest values reported for infrared camouflage. Programmable infrared encoding/decoding is explored by adjusting the concentration of liquid metal and applying areal strains. By introducing alloys with different melting points, temperature-dependent infrared painting/writing can be achieved. Furthermore, the multi-layered structure of infrared-modulating system is designed, where the liquid metal-based infrared modulating materials are integrated with an evaporated metallic film for enhanced performance of such system.

Abstract Corrosion of electrocatalysts during electrochemical operations, such as low potential - high potential cyclic swapping, can cause significant performance degradation. However, the electrochemical corrosion dynamics, including structural changes, especially site and composition specific ones, and their correlation with electrochemical processes are hidden due to the insufficient spatial-temporal resolution characterization methods. Using electrochemical liquid cell transmission electron microscopy, we visualize the electrochemical corrosion of Pd@Pt core-shell octahedral nanoparticles towards a Pt nanoframe. The potential-dependent surface reconstruction during multiple continuous in-situ cyclic voltammetry with clear redox peaks is captured, revealing an etching and deposition process of Pd that results in internal Pd atoms being relocated to external surface, followed by subsequent preferential corrosion of Pt (111) terraces rather than the edges or corners, simultaneously capturing the structure evolution also allows to attribute the site-specific Pt and Pd atomic dynamics to individual oxidation and reduction events. This work provides profound insights into the surface reconstruction of nanoparticles during complex electrochemical processes.

Abstract Control of convection plays an important role in heat transfer regulation, bio/chemical sensing, phase separation, etc. Current convection controlling systems generally depend on engineered energy sources to drive and manipulate the convection, which brings additional energy consumption into the system. Here the use of human hand as a natural and sustainable infrared (IR) radiation source for the manipulation of liquid convection is demonstrated. The fluid can sense the change of the relative position or the shape of the hand with the formation of different convection patterns. Besides the generation of static complex patterns, dynamic manipulation of convections can also be realized via moving of hand or finger. The use of such sustainable convections to control the movement of a floating “boat” is further achieved. The use of human hands as the natural energy sources provides a promising approach for the manipulation of liquid convection without the need of extra external energy, which may be further utilized for low‐cost and intelligent bio/chemical sensing and separation.

Abstract Graphene‐based composites show great potential in the development of lightweight functional devices and systems, and polymers are usually used as binders to enhance the mechanical properties of these composites. Due to the low thermal conductivity of the polymer and the high inherent interfacial thermal resistance between polymer and graphene, however, the developed devices and systems generally possess low thermal conductivity, which seriously limits their further thermal‐related applications. Here, a lightweight two‐phase heat transport device (TPHTD) based on a vapor‐liquid phase transition‐based heat transfer by using a graphene‐based composite material as the casing is generated. The graphene‐based TPHTD has high thermal conductivity of up to 1408 W (mK)−1 and realizes ultra‐high specific thermal conductivity of ≈5600 W (mKg)−1. This graphene‐based device with lightweight and high heat transfer capacity offers new opportunities for efficient thermal management of compact, portable, or wearable electronic and power systems.

The IR radiation from human hand can selectively interact with grating patterns in the generation of distinct IR structural colors, which can be used for human-machine interaction with flexible interaction distance in low or no light conditions.

The electronic industry is facing pressing needs for cooling system with high-performance in heat transfer and matched coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) with the chips. Metal composite materials (MCMs) with low CTE can be used in cooling chips to overcome the thermal expansion mismatch between the cooling substrate and chips. However, low thermal conductivity of MCMs limits their application in electronic cooling systems. Increasing the percentage of components with high thermal conductivity can enhance the thermal conductivity of MCMs, but it often leads to increase CTE as well. Here, we demonstrate that vapor–liquid phase change can improve the heat transfer performance of tungsten-copper (W-Cu) alloy-based MCMs while maintain their low CTEs. Such strategy reduces the maximum temperature and thermal resistance of MCMs, and also allows for heat spreading from concentrated heat source with high power density. The W-Cu alloy-based vapor chamber (VC) has low thermal resistance of 0.38 K/W at 100 W and high lateral thermal conductivity of ~1727 W/(m·K). The W-Cu alloy-based VC can be readily integrated with the chip and heat sink to serve as cooling substrates for dissipating the heat and simultaneously lowering the thermal expansion mismatch by using its high thermal conductivity and low CTE.

Background: Malignant ventricular arrhythmias caused by thyroid storm, such as ventricular tachycardia (VT) or ventricular fibrillation (VF), which are life-threatening, are rare. We report the case of a patient who suffered from cardiac arrest caused by thyroid storm and the rare VF; the patient showed a favorable neurologic outcome after receiving targeted temperature management (TTM) treatment by intravascular cooling measures.Case presentation: A 24-year-old woman who had lost 20 kg in the preceding 2 months presented to the emergency department with diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and tachycardia. Thyroid function testing showed increased free triiodothyronine (FT3) and free thyroxine (FT4), decreased thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and positive TSH-receptor antibody (TRAB). She was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and had experienced sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) due to ventricular fibrillation (VF) caused by thyroid storm. The patient was performed with targeted temperature management (TTM) by intravascular cooling measures. Regular follow-up in the endocrinology department showed a good outcome.Conclusions: Our case not only suggests a new method of cooling treatment for thyroid storm, but also provides evidence for the success of TTM on patients resuscitated from in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) who remain comatose after return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC).

Background/Aims: Doxorubicin (DOX) is a widely used chemotherapeutic agent for colorectal cancer (CRC). However, the acquirement of DOX resistance limits its clinical application for cancer therapy. Mounting evidence has suggested that aberrantly expressed lncRNAs contribute to drug resistance of various tumors. Our study aimed to explore the role and molecular mechanisms of lncRNA X-inactive specific transcript (XIST) in chemoresistance of CRC to DOX. Methods: The expressions of XIST, miR-124, serum and glucocorticoid-inducible kinase 1 (SGK1) mRNA in DOX-resistant CRC tissues and cells were detected by qRT-PCR or western blot analysis. DOX sensitivity was assessed by detecting IC50 value of DOX, the protein levels of P-glycoprotein (P-gp) and glutathione S-transferase-π (GST-π) and apoptosis. The interactions between XIST, miR-124 and SGK1 were confirmed by luciferase reporter assay, qRT-PCR and western blot. Xenograft tumor assay was used to verify the role of XIST in DOX resistance in CRC in vivo. Results: XIST expression was upregulated and miR-124 expression was downregulated in DOX-resistant CRC tissues and cells. Knockdown of XIST inhibited DOX resistance of CRC cells, as evidenced by the reduced IC50 value of DOX, decreased P-gp and GST-π levels and enhanced apoptosis in XIST-silenced DOX-resistant CRC cells. Additionally, XIST positively regulated SGK1 expression by interacting with miR-124 in DOX-resistant CRC cells. miR-124 suppression strikingly reversed XIST-knockdown-mediated repression on DOX resistance in DOX-resistant CRC cells. Moreover, SGK1-depletion-elicited decrease of DOX resistance was greatly restored by XIST overexpression or miR-124 inhibition in DOX-resistant CRC cells. Furthermore, XIST knockdown enhanced the anti-tumor effect of DOX in CRC in vivo. Conclusion: XIST exerted regulatory function in resistance of DOX possibly through miR-124/SGK1 axis, shedding new light on developing promising therapeutic strategy to overcome chemoresistance in CRC patients.

Radiative cooling, which normally requires relatively high infrared (IR) emissivity, is one of the insects’ effective thermoregulatory strategies to maintain their appropriate body temperature. Recently, the physical correlation between the delicate biological microstructures and IR emissivity for thermal radiation draws increased attention. Here, a scent patch region on the hindwing of Rapala dioetas butterfly is found to exhibit enhanced IR emissivity compared with the non-scent patch regions. A series of optical simulations are conducted to differentiate the effect of biological structures and material composition on the high IR emissivity. Besides the intrinsic IR absorption (emission) of chitin (the main composition of butterfly wings), the hierarchical microstructures of the scent patch scale further improve the IR absorption (emission) through the increased inner surface area and multi-scattering effect. This enhancement of IR emissivity enables the butterfly to efficiently radiate heat from the scent patch region to the environment with a limited volume of chitin. This study of the correlation between IR emissivity and microstructural designs may offer additional pathways to engineer bioinspired materials and systems for radiative cooling applications.

The sluggish kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on electrocatalysts represents a major obstacle in the development of fuel cell technology. A tremendous amount of work has reported the increasing ORR activity for catalysts. Nevertheless, when applied to practical Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA, an assembled stack of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell) configuration, the high-performance catalysts on the rotating disk electrode (RDE) may not display the same high activity as in the lab-scale tests. This led us to reexamine the ORR evaluation based on the RDE technique. With the development of high active electrocatalysts, it may become significant to determine the reasonable kinetic current at a conventional fixed potential approaching the limited current by using the Koutecky-Levich (K-L) technique on RDE for the evaluation of ORR activity. Here we describe such a challenging situation and systematically discuss the proper kinetic region when comparing the ORR activity with the unsuitable potential or Pt loading based on the K-L technique. Furthermore, the rational benchmarking guidelines are given for the evaluation of the ORR electrocatalysts.

Background/Aims: Tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) is an ideal anti-tumor drug because it exhibits selective cytotoxicity against cancer cells. However, certain cancer cells are resistant to TRAIL, and the potential mechanisms are still unclear. The aim of this study was to reduce the resistance of colorectal cancer (CRC) cells to TRAIL. Methods: Quantitative real-time PCR analysis was performed to detect the expression of microRNA-128 (miR-128) in tissues from patients with CRC and CRC cell lines. MTT assays were used to evaluate the effect of miR-128 on TRAIL-induced cytotoxicity against CRC cell lines. The distribution of death receptor 5 (DR5) and the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) were detected by flow cytometry analysis. Western blot, flow cytometry, and luciferase reporter assays were performed to evaluate the potential mechanism and pathway of miR-128-promoted apoptosis in TRAIL-treated CRC cells. Results: MiR-128 expression was downregulated in tumor tissues from patients with CRC as well as in CRC cell lines in vitro. The enforced expression of miR-128 sensitized CRC cells to TRAIL-induced cytotoxicity by inducing apoptosis. Mechanistically, bioinformatics, western blot analysis, and luciferase reporter assays showed that miR-128 directly targeted sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) in CRC cells. miR-128 overexpression suppressed SIRT1 expression, which promoted the production of ROS in TRAIL-treated CRC cells. This increase of ROS subsequently induced DR5 expression, and thus increased TRAIL-induced apoptosis in CRC cells. Conclusion: The combination of miR-128 with TRAIL may represent a novel approach for the treatment of CRC.

Modular production organization, as a new kind of capitalist production mode, has an important influence on labor relations. With the application of Marxian economics' "technologysystem" framework and the analysis of features of modular technology, this article argues that new changes come out in labor relations along with the division of network hierarchy resulting from modularity, mainly reflected in that enterprises and countries without the ability to lead industry upgrading only serve as the bottom of the suppliers to participate in the modular production network organization. The bottom of the suppliers, relying on their cheap labor resources to earn meager incomes, is being controlled by big capital. The division of labor within the industry and the stratification of suppliers as a result of modularity strengthen the leadership and control status of big capital. Besides, modularity provides a convenience for the capital to control production materials and labor resources of a global scope. Finally, this article puts forward some measures to get rid of capital's control in the modular era.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between anxiety and depression in pain patients has not been clarified comprehensively. Previous research has identified a common factor in anxiety and depression, which may explain why depression and anxiety are strongly correlated. However, the specific clinical features of anxiety and depression seem to pull in opposite directions. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to develop a statistical model of depression and anxiety, based on data from pain patients using Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). This model should account for the positive correlation between depression and anxiety in terms of a general factor and also demonstrate a latent negative correlation between the specific factors underlying depression and anxiety. METHODS: The anxiety and depression symptoms of pain patients were evaluated using the HADS and the severity of their pain was assessed with the visual analogue scale (VAS). We developed a hierarchical model of the data using an IRT method called bifactor analysis. In addition, we tested this hierarchical model with model fit comparisons with unidimensional, bidimensional, and tridimensional models. The correlations among anxiety, depression, and pain severity were compared, based on both the bidimensional model and our hierarchical model. RESULTS: The bidimensional model analysis found that there was a large positive correlation between anxiety and depression (r = 0.638), and both scores were significantly positively correlated with pain severity. After extracting general factor of distress using bifactor analysis, the specific factors underlying anxiety and depression were weakly but significantly negatively correlated (r = -0.245) and only the general factor was significantly correlated with pain severity. Compared with the three first-order models, the bifactor hierarchical model had the best model fit. CONCLUSION: Our results support the hypothesis that apart from distress, anxiety and depression are inversely correlated. This finding has not been convincingly demonstrated in previous research.
