2. Exploring the CO2 Electrocatalysis Potential of 2D Metal–Organic Transition Metal–Hexahydroxytriquinoline Frameworks: A DFT Investigation

Metal–organic frameworks have demonstrated great capacity in catalytic CO2 reduction due to their versatile pore structures, diverse active sites, and functionalization capabilities. In this study, a novel electrocatalytic framework for CO2 reduction was designed and implemented using 2D coordination network-type transition metal–hexahydroxytricyclic quinazoline (TM–HHTQ) materials. Density functional theory calculations were carried out to examine the binding energies between the HHTQ substrate and 10 single TM atoms, ranging from Sc to Zn, which revealed a stable distribution of metal atoms on the HHTQ substrate. The majority of the catalysts exhibited high selectivity for CO2 reduction, except for the Mn–HHTQ catalysts, which only exhibited selectivity at pH values above 4.183. Specifically, Ti and Cr primarily produced HCOOH, with corresponding 0.606 V and 0.236 V overpotentials. Vanadium produced CH4 as the main product with an overpotential of 0.675 V, while Fe formed HCHO with an overpotential of 0.342 V. Therefore, V, Cr, Fe, and Ti exhibit promising potential as electrocatalysts for carbon dioxide reduction due to their favorable product selectivity and low overpotential. Cu mainly produces CH3OH as the primary product, with an overpotential of 0.96 V. Zn primarily produces CO with a relatively high overpotential of 1.046 V. In contrast, catalysts such as Sc, Mn, Ni, and Co, among others, produce multiple products simultaneously at the same rate-limiting step and potential threshold.

This study investigates the utilisation of organometallic network frameworks composed of fourth-period transition metals and tetrahydroxyquinone (THQ) in electrocatalytic CO2 reduction. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed in analysing binding energies, as well as the stabilities of metal atoms within the THQ frameworks, for transition metal TM-THQs ranging from Y to Cd. The findings demonstrate how metal atoms could be effectively dispersed and held within the THQ frameworks due to sufficiently high binding energies. Most TM-THQ frameworks exhibited favourable selectivity towards CO2 reduction, except for Tc and Ru, which experienced competition from hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and required solution environments with pH values greater than 5.716 and 8.819, respectively, to exhibit CO2RR selectivity. Notably, the primary product of Y, Ag, and Cd was HCOOH; Mo produced HCHO; Pd yielded CO; and Zr, Nb, Tc, Ru, and Rh predominantly generated CH4. Among the studied frameworks, Zr-THQ displayed values of 1.212 V and 1.043 V, corresponding to the highest limiting potential and overpotential, respectively, while other metal–organic frameworks displayed relatively low ranges of overpotentials from 0.179 V to 0.949 V. Consequently, it is predicted that the TM-THQ framework constructed using a fourth-period transition metal and tetrahydroxyquinone exhibits robust electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 catalytic activity.

Abstract Background Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) offers comprehensive right ventricular (RV) evaluation in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Emerging four-dimensional (4D) flow CMR allows visualization and quantification of intracardiac flow components and calculation of phasic blood kinetic energy (KE) parameters but it is unknown whether these parameters are associated with cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET)-assessed exercise capacity, which is a surrogate measure of survival in PAH. We compared 4D flow CMR parameters in PAH with healthy controls, and investigated the association of these parameters with RV remodelling, RV functional and CPET outcomes. Methods PAH patients and healthy controls from two centers were prospectively enrolled to undergo on-site cine and 4D flow CMR, and CPET within one week. RV remodelling index was calculated as the ratio of RV to left ventricular (LV) end-diastolic volumes (EDV). Phasic (peak systolic, average systolic, and peak E-wave) LV and RV blood flow KE indexed to EDV (KEIEDV) and ventricular LV and RV flow components (direct flow, retained inflow, delayed ejection flow, and residual volume) were calculated. Oxygen uptake (VO2), carbon dioxide production (VCO2) and minute ventilation (VE) were measured and recorded. Results 45 PAH patients (46 ± 11 years; 7 M) and 51 healthy subjects (46 ± 14 years; 17 M) with no significant differences in age and gender were analyzed. Compared with healthy controls, PAH had significantly lower median RV direct flow, RV delayed ejection flow, RV peak E-wave KEIEDV, peak VO2, and percentage (%) predicted peak VO2, while significantly higher median RV residual volume and VE/VCO2 slope. Hepatitis B virus (HBV)-infected hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has a high incidence and fatality rate worldwide, being among the most prevalent cancers. The growing body of data indicating cellular senescence (CS) to be a critical factor in hepatocarcinogenesis. The predictive value of CS in HBV-related HCC and its role in the immune microenvironment are unknown. To determine the cellular senescence profile of HBV-related HCC and its role in shaping the immune microenvironment, this study employed a rigorous evaluation of multiple datasets encompassing 793 HBV-related HCC samples. Two novel distinct CS subtypes were first identified by nonnegative matrix factorization, and we found that the senescence-activated subgroup had the worst prognosis and correlated with cancer progression. C1 and C2 were identified as the senescence-suppressed and senescence-activated subgroups. The immune microenvironment indicated that C2 exhibited a relatively low immune status, higher tumor purity, and lower immune scores and estimated scores, while the C1 subgroup possessed a better prognosis. The CS score signature based on five genes (CENPA, EZH2, G6PD, HDAC1, and PRPF19) was established using univariate Cox regression and the lasso method. ICGC-LIRI and GSE14520 cohorts were used to validate the reliability of the CS scoring system. In addition, we examined the association between the risk score and hallmark pathways through gene set variation analysis and gene set enrichment analysis. The results revealed a high CS score to be associated with the activation of cell senescence-related pathways. The CS score and other clinical features were combined to generate a CS dynamic nomogram with a better predictive capacity for OS at 1, 2, and 3 years than other clinical parameters. Our study demonstrated that cellular senescence patterns play a non-negligible role in shaping the characteristics of the immune microenvironment and profoundly affecting tumor prognosis. The results of this study will help predict patient prognosis more accurately and may assist in development of personalized immunotherapy for HBV-related HCC patients.

Abstract Background Parameters of myocardial deformation may provide improved insights into right ventricular (RV) dysfunction. We quantified RV longitudinal myocardial function using a fast, semi-automated method and investigated its diagnostic and prognostic values in patients with repaired tetralogy of Fallot (rTOF) and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), who respectively exemplify patients with RV volume and pressure overload conditions. Methods The study enrolled 150 patients (rTOF, n = 75; PAH, n = 75) and 75 healthy controls. RV parameters of interest were fast global longitudinal strain (GLS) and strain rates during systole (GLSRs), early diastole (GLSRe) and late diastole (GLSRa), obtained by tracking the distance from the medial and lateral tricuspid valve insertions to the RV epicardial apex on cine cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR). Results The RV fast GLS exhibited good agreement with strain values obtained by conventional feature tracking approach (bias − 4.9%, error limits (± 2·standard deviation) ± 4.3%) with fast GLS achieving greater reproducibility and requiring reduced analysis time. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) is the reference standard for non-invasive assessment of right-sided heart function. Recent advances in CMR post-processing facilitate quantification of tricuspid annular (TA) dynamics and longitudinal strains of the right ventricle (RV) and right atrium (RA). We aimed to determine age- and sex-specific changes in CMR-derived TA dynamics, and RV and RA functional parameters in healthy Asian adults. We studied 360 healthy subjects aged 21–79 years, with 30 men and 30 women in each of the six age groups. Functional parameters of RV and RA were measured on standard four-chamber cine CMR using fast feature tracking: (1) TA peak velocities (systolic velocity S′, early diastolic velocity E′, late diastolic velocity A′) and TA plane systolic excursion (TAPSE); (2) RV global longitudinal strain (GLS) and strain rates; and (3) RA phasic longitudinal strains and strain rates. S′ and TAPSE exhibited negative correlations with age. RV GLS was significantly higher in females than in males but not associated with age in both sexes. Females had similar E′, lower A′, and higher E′/A′ ratios compared to males. Positive associations of E′ and E′/A′, and negative association of A′ with age were observed in both sexes. Females had higher RA reservoir and conduit strains compared to males. There were significantly negative and positive associations between RA conduit and booster strains, respectively, with age. Age- and sex-specific reference ranges were established, and associations revealed, for fast CMR feature tracking parameters of right heart function in a large normal Asian population.

China apparel customization brands (CACBs) have been recently growing in massive quantities despite being in their infancy stages of brand value building. Although scholars have proven brand value’s importance in sustainable brand growth, studies on the specific context of CACBs are still limited. This research proposes a conceptual framework of CACBs’ brand value measured dimension based on previous studies and divides brand value into both general and specific dimensions. Accordingly, qualitative (semi-structured interviews) and quantitative (online survey) studies were conducted from the perspectives of practitioners and consumers. Ultimately, a scale of 30 items with nine dimensions was generated. Results reveal that brand association in the general dimensions and brand service in the special dimensions were the largest promoters of CACB brand value. Hence, practitioners should pay more attention to dimensions of cognitive conflicts. Practical suggestions for apparel customization marketers are proposed to build and enhance brand value.

The mechanisms underlying neutrophilic inflammation in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) remain poorly investigated. This study aimed to examine the factors that contribute to tissue neutrophilia in CRSwNP. The numbers of neutrophils and active caspase-3-positive apoptotic neutrophils in sinonasal tissues were assessed via immunofluorescence staining. The 95th percentile of tissue neutrophil numbers in control subjects was selected as a cut-off to define neutrophil-high (Neu-high) or neutrophil-low (Neu-low) nasal polyps (NPs). The levels of 34 inflammatory mediators in sinonasal tissues were analyzed using Bio-Plex assay. Purified human peripheral blood neutrophils were incubated with nasal tissue homogenates, and the apoptotic neutrophils were assessed via flow cytometry. The cut-off for Neu-high NPs was >10 myeloperoxidase positive cells/high-power field. Compared with Neu-low NPs, Neu-high NPs had higher tissue levels of IL-1β, IL-1Ra, IL-6, IL-8, G-CSF, MCP-1, and MIP-1α, but lower levels of IL-5, IL-13, IgE, and eosinophils. Principal component and multiple correspondence analyses revealed mixed type 1, type 2, and type 3 endotypes for Neu-low NPs, and predominant type 1 and type 3 endotypes for Neu-high NPs. Neu-high NPs had lower percentages of apoptotic neutrophils than Neu-low NPs. The numbers of neutrophils and the percentages of apoptotic neutrophils correlated with G-CSF and IL-6 levels in the NPs. Tissue homogenates from Neu-high NPs, but not those from Neu-low NPs, suppressed neutrophil apoptosis in vitro, which was reversed by anti-G-CSF treatment. Tissue neutrophil numbers were associated with difficult-to-treat disease in patients with CRSwNP after surgery. Abstract Objective This study aims to discuss the efficacy and safety of the application of thrombus aspiration catheters during emergency PCI operations for acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients with high thrombus load. Methods A total of 204 patients diagnosed with acute STEMI and high thrombus load in the Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University from July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017 were selected for the present study. These patients were randomly divided into two groups: thrombus catheter aspiration group (group A, n = 101), and balloon dilatation group (group B, n = 103). The blood flow of the culprit coronary artery in the thrombolysis in myocardial infarction (TIMI) immediately after the emergency PCI operation in these two groups of patients was recorded. Then, an echocardiogram was performed to determine the left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVEDD) and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) after the operation, and data on major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) during the 30 days of postoperative follow-up were collected. Results The comparative difference between these two groups of patients in terms of hypertension, smoking, diabetes, usage rate of GPIIb/IIIa receptor antagonist, time from hospitalization to balloon dilatation (D2B) and other basic clinical data was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). The postoperative TIMI flow grade of these two groups of patients improved, and the comparative difference between the data obtained from these two groups was statistically significant (P 0.05). There was a difference in the occurrence rate of MACE in these two groups of patients during the 30 days of postoperative follow-up, but the comparative difference between these two groups was not statistically significant (P = 0.335). Conclusion The application of thrombus aspiration catheter during the emergency PCI operation of STEMI patients with high thrombus load can better improve the myocardial reperfusion. There is no basis for increasing the stroke occurrence risk. However, it obviously fails to improve the recent prognosis and more studies need to explore its effect on myocardial remodeling and major adverse cardiovascular events.

24. Inter-Professional-Compassionate pain management during endotracheal suctioning: a valuable lesson from a Chinese surgical intensive care unit

Objective To compare the effects of a pain management program and routine suctioning methods on the level of pain presence and agitation in Chinese adults admitted to the intensive care unit. To disseminate the results from the implementation of the evidence-informed pain management interventions for reducing pain presence and agitation during endotracheal tube suctioning (ETS) and translate the key finding to clinical nursing practice. Methods A quasi-experimental study of a two-group post-test design was conducted in adults admitted after surgery to a surgical intensive care unit (SICU) of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University, Yunnan, China in 2018. Fifty-two adults who met the study eligibility were included after consent, 26 in each group. Patients in the control group received usual care while patients in the intervention group received interventions to reduce agitation and pain-related ETS. The impacts of the intervention on the level of pain presence and agitation were measured at 5 measuring time points using the Chinese versions of Critical-Care Pain Observation Tool (CPOT) and Richmond Agitation Sedation Scale (RASS). Results The level of pain presence in the intervention group statistically significantly decreased during, immediately after, and 5 min after suctioning. The level of agitation in the intervention group significantly decreased during and immediately after suctioning. Conclusions The findings provide support for the positive pain-relieving effects of the evidence-informed pain-related ETS management interventions when compared with the usual ETS practice. The study interventions were sufficiently effective and safe to maintain patent airway clean and patent as standardized suctioning and helps pain relief. So, evidence-based pain-related ETS management intervention is worthy of recommending to utilize in SICU patients as well as other patients who required suctioning. It is worth noting that integrating pre-emptive analgesia prescription and administration with non-pharmacological intervention plays a critical role in achieving pain relief.

Aims This study aimed to investigate whether electroacupuncture (EA) promotes the survival and synaptic plasticity of hippocampal neurons by activating brain‐derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)/tyrosine receptor kinase (TrkB)/extracellular signal‐regulated kinase (Erk) signaling, thereby improving spatial memory deficits in rats under SD. Methods In vivo, Morris water maze (MWM) was used to detect the effect of EA on learning and memory, at the same time Western blotting (WB), immunofluorescence (IF), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to explore the plasticity of hippocampal neurons and synapses, and the expression of BDNF/TrkB/Erk signaling. In vitro, cultured hippocampal neurons were treated with exogenous BDNF and the TrkB inhibitor K252a to confirm the relationship between BDNF/TrkB/Erk signaling and synaptic plasticity. Results Our results showed that EA mitigated the loss of hippocampal neurons and synapses, stimulated hippocampal neurogenesis, and improved learning and memory of rats under SD accompanied by upregulation of BDNF and increased phosphorylation of TrkB and Erk. In cultured hippocampal neurons, exogenous BDNF enhanced the expression of synaptic proteins, the frequency of the postsynaptic currents, and the phosphorylation of TrkB and Erk; these effects were reversed by treatment with K252a. Conclusions Electroacupuncture alleviates SD‐induced spatial memory impairment by promoting hippocampal neurogenesis and synaptic plasticity via activation of BDNF/TrkB/Erk signaling, which provided evidence for EA as a therapeutic strategy for countering the adverse effects of SD on cognition., Electroacupuncture may ameliorate spatial memory impairment during sleep deprivation through improving hippocampal neuron survival, neurogenesis and synaptic plasticity via regulating BDNF/TrkB/ERK signaling

Peripheral nerve injury not only affects the site of the injury, but can also induce neuronal apoptosis at the spinal cord. However, many acupuncture clinicians still focus only on the injury site, selecting acupoints entirely along the injured nerve trunk and neglecting other regions; this may delay onset of treatment efficacy and rehabilitation. Therefore, in the present study, we compared the clinical efficacy of acupuncture at Governor vessel and local meridian acupoints combined (GV/LM group) with acupuncture at local meridian acupoints alone (LM group) in the treatment of patients with peripheral nerve injury. In the GV/LM group (n = 15), in addition to meridian acupoints at the injury site, the following acupoints on the Governor vessel were stimulated: Baihui (GV20), Fengfu (GV16), Dazhui (GV14), and Shenzhu (GV12), selected to treat nerve injury of the upper limb, and Jizhong (GV6), Mingmen (GV4), Yaoyangguan (GV3), and Yaoshu (GV2) to treat nerve injury of the lower limb. In the LM group (n = 15), only meridian acupoints along the injured nerve were selected. Both groups had electroacupuncture treatment for 30 minutes, once a day, 5 times per week, for 6 weeks. Two cases dropped out of the LM group. A good or excellent clinical response was obtained in 80% of the patients in the GV/LM group and 38.5% of the LM group. In a second study, an additional 20 patients underwent acupuncture with the same prescription as the GV/LM group. Electomyographic nerve conduction tests were performed before and after acupuncture to explore the mechanism of action of the treatment. An effective response was observed in 80.0% of the patients, with greater motor nerve conduction velocity and amplitude after treatment, indicating that electroacupuncture on specific Governor vessel acupoints promotes functional motor nerve repair after peripheral nerve injury. In addition, electromyography was performed before, during and after electroacupuncture in one patient with radial nerve injury. After a single session, the patient's motor nerve conduction velocity increased by 23.2%, indicating that electroacupuncture at Governor vessel acupoints has an immediate therapeutic effect on peripheral nerve injury. Our results indicate that Governor vessel and local meridian acupoints used simultaneously promote functional repair after peripheral nerve injury. The mechanism of action may arise from an improvement of the local microenvironment in injured nervous tissue, as well as immediate effects of Governor vessel and local meridian acupoint stimulation to ensure the continuity between the peripheral and central nervous systems

Background. Skip lymph node metastasis (SLNM) refers to lateral lymph node metastasis (LLNM) without involving central lymph node (CLN). Some microscopic nodal positivity may be difficult to detect before surgery due to atypical imaging characteristics. These patients are misdiagnosed as having clinically node-negative (cN0) papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) even after central lymph node dissection, leading to a high risk of developing LNM after surgery. Current prediction models have limited clinical utility, as they are only applicable to predict SLNM from clinically node-positive (cN+) PTC, not cN0 PTC, and this has little impact on treatment strategies. Objectives. This study aimed to establish a nomogram for preoperatively assessing the likelihood of SLNM in cN0 PTC patients with increased risk of LNM, thus optimizing their therapeutic options. Materials and methods. The records of 780 PTC patients undergoing thyroidectomy along with bilateral central lymph node dissection were retrospectively reviewed. The cN0 patients with postoperative LLNM (occult SLNM) and cN+ patients without central lymph node metastasis (CLNM) (typical SLNM) were included in the SLNM group (n = 82). The CLNM-negative cN0 patients without postoperative LLNM were assigned to the non-SLNM group (n = 698). The independent correlates of SLNM constituted the nomogram for determining the likelihood of SLNM in high-risk cN0 PTC patients. Results. The independent correlates of SLNM were age (hazard ratio (HR) = 1.016), tumor location (HR = 1.801), tumor size (HR = 1.528), and capsular invasion (HR = 2.941). They served as components in the development of the nomogram. This model was verified to present acceptable discrimination. It showed good calibration and a decent net benefit when the predicted probability was <60%. Conclusions. We developed a nomogram incorporating preoperative clinical data to predict the probability of SLNM development in high-risk cN0 PTC patients, which contributed to their optimized treatment options. We assessed the expressions of MHCI, LYZC, keratin8, MPO, DUSP1, IκBα, Rab21, and Rac2 between two species of carps (Erqisi river crucian carp and allogynogenetic crucian carp) after Cyprinid herpesvirus 2 (CyHV-2) infection. The relative expressions of MHCI, LYZC, and keratin8 in the virus-challenged groups were significantly higher than control groups. Moreover, the expression of IκBα in the virus-challenged groups was significantly lower than in the control groups. Compared with the virus-challenged ERO group, the expression of IκBα in the virus-challenged ZHO group decreased. The expression of Rab21 in the virus-challenged groups gradually increased and was significantly higher than in the control groups, and then its expression began to decrease after 24 h. At 72 h, the expression of IκBα in both virus-challenged groups was significantly lower than in the control groups. In addition, the expression of Rab21 in the virus-challenged ZHO group was significantly higher than the virus-challenged ERO group at all time points except for 72 h. Before 24 h, the expression of Rac2 remained unchanged in these four groups, and its expression in the virus-challenged ZHO group was significantly higher than in the other three groups. Nevertheless, its expression began to decrease after 24 h but was still slightly higher than the control group at 72 h. MPO showed a similar expression pattern as Rac2. The expression of DUSP1 in the four groups was the same at 0 h. However, its expression in the virus-challenged ZHO group was significantly higher than in the other three groups at other time points.

Since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the epidemic has gradually slowed down in various countries and people’s lives have gradually returned to normal. To monitor the spread of the epidemic, studies discussing the design of related healthcare information systems have been increasing recently. However, these studies might not consider the aspect of user-centric design when developing healthcare information systems. This study examined these innovative technology applications and rapidly built prototype systems for smart healthcare through a systematic literature review and a study of patient innovation. The design guidelines for the Smart Healthcare System (SHS) were then compiled through an expert review process. This will provide a reference for future research and similar healthcare information system development.

39. Effects of Indoor Plants on Human Functions: A Systematic Review with Meta-Analyses

The influences of indoor plants on people have been examined by only three systematic reviews and no meta-analyses. The objective of this study was therefore to investigate the effects of indoor plants on individuals’ physiological, cognitive, health-related, and behavioral functions by conducting a systematic review with meta-analyses to fill the research gap. The eligibility criteria of this study were (1) any type of participants, (2) any type of indoor plants, (3) comparators without any plants or with other elements, (4) any type of objective human function outcomes, (5) any type of study design, and (6) publications in either English or Chinese. Records were extracted from the Web of Science (1990–), Scopus (1970–), WANFANG DATA (1980–), and Taiwan Periodical Literature (1970–). Therefore, at least two databases were searched in English and in Chinese—two of the most common languages in the world. The last search date of all four databases was on 18 February 2021. We used a quality appraisal system to evaluate the included records. A total of 42 records was included for the systematic review, which concluded that indoor plants affect participants’ functions positively, particularly those of relaxed physiology and enhanced cognition. Separate meta-analyses were then conducted for the effects of the absence or presence of indoor plants on human functions. The meta-analyses comprised only 16 records. The evidence synthesis showed that indoor plants can significantly benefit participants’ diastolic blood pressure (−2.526, 95% CI −4.142, −0.909) and academic achievement (0.534, 95% CI 0.167, 0.901), whereas indoor plants also affected participants’ electroencephalography (EEG) α and β waves, attention, and response time, though not significantly. The major limitations of this study were that we did not include the grey literature and used only two or three records for the meta-analysis of each function. In brief, to achieve the healthy city for people’s health and effective functioning, not only are green spaces needed in cities, but also plants are needed in buildings.

We compared mortality and hospitalization rates in four groups of patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) [isolated pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) or interstitial lung disease (ILD), concomitant ILD-pulmonary hypertension (PH), and no/mild pulmonary involvement].In the Systemic Sclerosis Cohort Singapore (SCORE), ILD was diagnosed by HRCT and significant ILD was defined by forced vital capacity70% predicted. Patients were classified as PAH if echocardiographic systolic pulmonary artery pressure (sPAP) ≥50 mmHg or right heart catheterization (RHC) mean PAP ≥25 mmHg. Multivariable regression analyses were performed to determine factors associated with mortality and hospital admissions per year. Cox proportional hazard model was used to analyze survival.Of 490 SSc patients, 50 patients had PAH, 92 patients had ILD and 43 patients had ILD-PH. Of 93 patients with PAH or ILD-PH, 56 were based on echocardiography and 37 on RHC. Patients with ILD-PH (HR 3.77, 95% CI: 2.05-6.93) had the highest risk of death, followed by PAH (HR 3.03, 95% CI: 1.60-5.76) and ILD (HR 1.84, 95% CI: 1.04-3.28). After adjustment for confounders, PAH (HR 2.39, 95% CI: 1.13-5.07) remained independently associated with mortality, but not ILD-PH or ILD. Other factors associated with mortality were male gender, age at SSc diagnosis, malabsorption and digital ulcer/ gangrene. Increased hospitalization rate was associated with renal crisis, right heart failure and PAH medications, but not SSc groups.PAH is an independent risk factor of mortality in SSc. Increased hospitalization rate was not associated with SSc groups. Other factors associated with increased mortality and hospital admissions were identified.

Introduction: Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) is a known sequela after acute pulmonary embolism (PE). It is a debilitating disease, and potentially fatal if left untreated. This review provides a clinically relevant overview of the disease and discusses the usefulness and limitations of the various investigational and treatment options. Methods: A PubMed search on articles relevant to pulmonary embolism, pulmonary hypertension, chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary endarterectomy, and balloon pulmonary angioplasty were performed. A total of 68 articles were found to be relevant and were reviewed. Results: CTEPH occurs as a result of non-resolution of thrombotic material, with subsequent fibrosis and scarring of the pulmonary arteries. Risk factors have been identified, but the underlying mechanisms have yet to be fully elucidated. The cardinal symptom of CTEPH is dyspnoea on exertion, but the diagnosis is often challenging due to lack of awareness. The ventilation/perfusion scan is recommended for screening for CTEPH, with other modalities (eg. dual energy computed tomography pulmonary angiography) also being utilised in expert centres. Conventional pulmonary angiography with right heart catherisation is important in the final diagnosis of CTEPH. Conclusion: Operability assessment by a multidisciplinary team is crucial for the management of CTEPH, as pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA) remains the guideline recommended treatment and has the best chance of cure. For inoperable patients or those with residual disease post-PEA, medical therapy or balloon pulmonary angioplasty are potential treatment options. No study has comprehensively reviewed the effects of indoor plants on air quality; therefore, this study systematically reviewed quantitative empirical research on these effects in both English and Chinese. The information sources were the Web of Science and WanFang Data Knowledge Service Platform electronic databases. Only journal articles reporting quantitative empirical research were selected. The eligibility criteria included studies with (1) interventions of any indoor plant, excluding biofilters that combine power facilities and vegetation, (2) comparators included within the same experimental treatment or between different experimental treatments, (3) air quality effects objectively measured using any instrument, and (4) any study design. Both authors screened 95 journal articles and compiled information according to (1) intervention (plant species, foliage, or medium), (2) scientific family name of each plant, (3) study design (experiment, field experiment, or survey), (4) air quality (e.g., temperature, humidity, negative ions, radiation, and dust), (5) pollutants, (6) research environment, (7) ventilation (types and rates), (8) climate (lighting, temperature, and humidity), (9) exposure duration, (10) sampling frequency or period, and (11) number of replications. The primary effects of the potential of the indoor plants on air quality were reduced pollutant levels (particularly formaldehyde, benzene, and toluene removal), followed by increase in humidity and decrease in temperature. In addition, including various plant species could improve the effects of indoor vegetation on ameliorating air quality and microclimate conditions.

The mechanisms underlying neutrophilic inflammation in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) remain poorly investigated. This study aimed to examine the factors that contribute to tissue neutrophilia in CRSwNP. The numbers of neutrophils and active caspase-3-positive apoptotic neutrophils in sinonasal tissues were assessed via immunofluorescence staining. The 95th percentile of tissue neutrophil numbers in control subjects was selected as a cut-off to define neutrophil-high (Neu-high) or neutrophil-low (Neu-low) nasal polyps (NPs). The levels of 34 inflammatory mediators in sinonasal tissues were analyzed using Bio-Plex assay. Purified human peripheral blood neutrophils were incubated with nasal tissue homogenates, and the apoptotic neutrophils were assessedviaflow cytometry. The cut-off for Neu-high NPs was >10 myeloperoxidase positive cells/high-power field. Compared with Neu-low NPs, Neu-high NPs had higher tissue levels of IL-1β, IL-1Ra, IL-6, IL-8, G-CSF, MCP-1, and MIP-1α, but lower levels of IL-5, IL-13, IgE, and eosinophils. Principal component and multiple correspondence analyses revealed mixed type 1, type 2, and type 3 endotypes for Neu-low NPs, and predominant type 1 and type 3 endotypes for Neu-high NPs. Neu-high NPs had lower percentages of apoptotic neutrophils than Neu-low NPs. The numbers of neutrophils and the percentages of apoptotic neutrophils correlated with G-CSF and IL-6 levels in the NPs. Tissue homogenates from Neu-high NPs, but not those from Neu-low NPs, suppressed neutrophil apoptosisin vitro, which was reversed by anti-G-CSF treatment. Tissue neutrophil numbers were associated with difficult-to-treat disease in patients with CRSwNP after surgery. We propose that G-CSF promotes neutrophilic inflammation by inhibiting neutrophil apoptosis in CRSwNP.

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an acute infectious disease caused by a tick-borne phlebovirus, which was reported to be continuously epidemic in Japan, Korea and in 23 provinces of China since 2010. Most laboratory-confirmed SFTS cases in China have been recorded in 18 Eastern and Central provinces. A few suspected cases with SFTS-like symptoms were reported to the Chinese Disease Prevention and Control Information System from provinces including Guangxi, Guangdong, Gansu and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XJUAR), however diagnosis was not confrimed due to lack of molecular biological and virological evidence. Here we reported the first laboratory-confirmed SFTS case in 2017. A resident of Hainan International Tourism Island (HNITI) was bitten by ticks when traveling in XJUAR and had illness onset after returning to HNITI. RT-PCR detected SFTSV RNA in the patient’s serum samples. Antibodies against SFTSV were detected from the patient and the neutralization from serum samples was evaluated. And the samples of person who had close contact to the patient were also investigated. Moreover, a new SFTSV strain was isolated from the serum sample collected from the patient during acute phase of disease. The viral properties and phylogeny were further characterized. In addition, SFTSV was detected positive in ticks collected from XJUAR in 2017, which suggested that SFTSV was more widely distributed than we recognized. Therefore, this study identified the first SFTS case from XJUAR where confirmed cases have never been reported and demonstrated the substantial risk from SFTSV infection via tick bite there. It is also the first importing SFTS case in HNITI, which showed the significant role of human transport in disease spread and indicated that the recently authorized international tourism island may face more challenges for controlling other importing cases from different areas and countries.

Transplantation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) promotes functional recovery in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and in a murine model of MS. However, there is only a modicum of information on differentiation of grafted MSCs into oligodendrocyte-like cells in MS. The purpose of this study was to transplant neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) and retinoic acid (RA) preinduced MSCs (NR-MSCs) into a demyelinated spinal cord induced by ethidium bromide and to investigate whether EA treatment could promote NT-3 secretion in the demyelinated spinal cord. We also sought to determine whether increased NT-3 could further enhance NR-MSCs overexpressing the tyrosine receptor kinase C (TrkC) to differentiate into more oligodendrocyte-like cells, resulting in increased remyelination and nerve conduction in the spinal cord. Our results showed that NT-3 and RA increased transcription of TrkC mRNA in cultured MSCs. EA increased NT-3 levels and promoted differentiation of oligodendrocyte-like cells from grafted NR-MSCs in the demyelinated spinal cord. There was evidence of myelin formation by grafted NR-MSCs. In addition, NR-MSC transplantation combined with EA treatment (the NR-MSCs + EA group) reduced demyelination and promoted remyelination. Furthermore, the conduction of cortical motor-evoked potentials has improved compared to controls. Together, our data suggest that preinduced MSC transplantation combined with EA treatment not only increased MSC differentiation into oligodendrocyte-like cells forming myelin sheaths, but also promoted remyelination and functional improvement of nerve conduction in the demyelinated spinal cord.

Our previous results showed that the polysaccharides extracted from Lycium barbarum (LBP) could delay secondary degeneration of retinal ganglion cell bodies and improve the function of the retinas after partial optic nerve transection (PONT). Although the common degeneration mechanisms were believed to be shared by both neuronal bodies and axons, recently published data from slow Wallerian degeneration mutant (Wld s ) mice supported the divergence in the mechanisms of them. Therefore, we want to determine if LBP could also delay the degeneration of axons after PONT. Microglia/macrophages were thought to be a source of reactive oxygen species after central nervous system (CNS) injury. After PONT, however, oxidative stress was believed to occur prior to the activation of microglia/macrophages in the areas vulnerable to secondary degeneration both in the optic nerves (ONs) and the retinas. But the results did not take into account the morphological changes of microglia/macrophages after their activation. So we examined the morphology in addition to the response magnitude of microglia/macrophages to determine their time point of activation. In addition, the effects of LBP on the activation of microglia/macrophages were investigated. The results showed that (1) LBP reduced the loss of axons in the central ONs and preserved the g-ratio (axon diameter/fiber diameter) in the ventral ONs although no significant effect was detected in the dorsal ONs; (2) microglia/macrophages were activated in the ONs by 12 h after PONT; (3) LBP decreased the response magnitude of microglia/macrophages 4 weeks after PONT. In conclusion, our results showed that LBP could delay secondary degeneration of the axons, and LBP could also inhibit the activation of microglia/macrophages. Therefore, LBP could be a promising herbal medicine to delay secondary degeneration in the CNS via modulating the function of microglia/macrophages.

Using first-principles calculations, we predicted the half-metallic, mechanical, and acoustic properties of novel CuHg2Ti-type Mn2LiZ (Z=As, Sb) compounds. It was found that Mn2LiAs and Mn2LiSb are half-metallic ferrimagnetic compounds with gaps in the minority-spin direction of 1.094 and 1.099 eV in equilibrium state, respectively, and have an integer total magnetic moments of 2.000 μB per formula unit for adherence to the Slater-Pauling rule. It was also found that Mn2LiAs and Mn2LiSb are mechanically stable, brittle, and elastically anisotropic, and Mn2LiAs has more brittleness, more significant anisotropy, and higher Debye temperature than Mn2LiSb.

BACKGROUND: The link between skeletal muscle and heart disease remains intriguing. It is unknown how skeletal muscle may be associated with aspects of myocardial structure and function, particularly in the presence of ageing-related sarcopenia. We hypothesize that among ageing adults with sarcopenia, alterations in myocardial structure and/or function may exist, resulting in a syndrome of ‘cardio-sarcopenia’. METHODS: Participants derived from a community cohort study underwent same-day bio-impedance body composition analysis that measured skeletal muscle in sites such as trunk, upper limb and lower limb and echocardiography for assessment of myocardial structure and function. Sarcopenia was diagnosed using the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia criteria. RESULTS: We studied a total of 378 participants, of whom 88 (23.3%) had sarcopenia.
