Myocardial infarction (MI) is caused by the formation of plaques in the arterial walls, leading to a decrease of blood flow to the heart and myocardium injury as a result of hypoxia. Ferroptosis is a crucial event in myocardial injury, and icariin (ICA) exerts protective effects against myocardial injury. Here, we investigated the protective mechanism of ICA in hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R)‐induced ferroptosis of cardiomyocytes. H9C2 cells were subjected to H/R induction. The content of lactate dehydrogenase and the levels of oxidative stress and intracellular ferrous ion Fe2+ were measured. The levels of ferroptosis markers (ACSL4 and GPX4) were detected. H/R‐induced H9C2 cells were cultured with ICA in the presence or absence of ferroptosis inducer (erastin). Znpp (an HO‐1 inhibitor) was added to ICA‐treated H/R cells to verify the role of the Nrf2/HO‐1 pathway. H/R‐induced H9C2 cells showed reduced viability, enhanced oxidative stress and lactate dehydrogenase content, increased levels of Fe2+ and ACSL4, and decreased levels of GPX4. ICA inhibited H/R‐induced ferroptosis and oxidative stress in cardiomyocytes. Erastin treatment reversed the inhibitory effect of ICA on ferroptosis in H/R cells. The expression of Nrf2 and HO‐1 in H/R‐induced H9C2 cells was reduced, whereas ICA treatment reversed this trend. Inhibition of the Nrf2/HO‐1 pathway reversed the protective effect of ICA on H/R‐induced ferroptosis. Collectively, our results suggest that ICA attenuates H/R‐induced ferroptosis of cardiomyocytes by activating the Nrf2/HO‐1 signaling pathway., Hypoxia/reoxygenation can induce ferroptosis in cardiomyocytes. Here, we report that icariin can activate the Nrf2/HO‐1 signaling pathway and inhibit hypoxia/reoxygenation‐induced ferroptosis in cardiomyocytes.

Twice-painting technique was adopted to prepare heavy-duty anticorrosive coating films formed by aqueous latexes of copolymers of vinylidene chloride (VDC) with an acrylate, namely methyl acrylate (MA), ethyl acrylate (EA), butyl acrylate (BA) or 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (EHA). Harsh salt-spray corrosion tests demonstrated that the optimized twice-painting technique was that the acidic latex solution was adjusted to pH 5–6 for the first painting, while it was utilized directly for the second painting. The test of 600 h of harsh salt-spray corrosion showed that MA-VDC85 coating could protect the steel excellently, whereas the other acrylate-VDC coatings with 75%–90% VDC content could not protect the steel so effectively. Further corrosion test showed that (1) MA-VDC85 coating protected steel from loss of metallic luster for at least 1000 h of salt-spray corrosion; (2) adhesion of MA-VDC85 coating to steel was excellent for at least 800 h of salt-spray corrosion, but became very poor after 1000 h. Differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy were used to evaluate the corroded MA-VDC85 film.

Aqueous core–shell latexes were synthesized through two-step emulsion copolymerization of vinylidene chloride (VDC) with ethyl acrylate (EA) and butyl acrylate (BA), respectively. First, seed latexes of EA-VDC85 copolymers with 85% VDC content were prepared by the binary emulsion copolymerization of VDC with EA. Subsequently, EA-VDC85 seed latexes were employed in the seed emulsion copolymerization of VDC with BA and the resulting BA-VDC80 copolymers with 80% VDC content covered onto EA-VDC85 seed latexes to form the core–shell latexes. Transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering characterization demonstrated that the size and size uniformity of seed latexes were influenced markedly by the content of emulsifiers in the copolymerization, and higher emulsifier content led to smaller and more uniform latexes. Aqueous latexes of copolymers of vinylidene chloride (VDC) with an acrylate, namely, methyl acrylate (MA), ethyl acrylate (EA), butyl acrylate (BA), or 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (EHA), were employed to form a double-layer coating film for the heavy-duty anticorrosion of metal. Measurements of the water-vapor transmission rate and oxygen-gas transmission rate and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) demonstrated that the barrier properties of MA–VDC and EA–VDC films were better than those of BA–VDC and EHA–VDC films. Among the MA–VDC and EA–VDC coatings, EA–VDC85 showed better comprehensive properties and, thus, was selected as the top layer of the designed double-layer coating film. Adhesion tests demonstrated that the BA–VDC and EA–VDC coatings had better adhesion to tinplates than the MA–VDC and EA–VDC coatings and, thus, were suitable for use as the bottom layer of the designed double-layer coating film. The characterizations of the double-layer coating films by adhesion tests and EIS showed that BA–VDC75 was the optimal bottom layer. Under harsh salt-spray corrosion conditions, the optimal double-layer coating film (ca. 50-μm thickness) with EA–VDC85 as the top layer and BA–VDC75 as the bottom layer could protect tinplate well for at least 800 h, and the adhesion of the coating film to the tinplate was still excellent even after 1000 h of corrosion. Objective To investigate the relationship between cognitive impairment and somatosensory evoked magnetic field and auditory evoked magnetic field changes in elderly male patients with subcortical ischemic vascular dementia (SIVD). Methods Magnetoencephalography (MEG) was used to record evoked magnetic field changes from 4 SIVD patients (76–88 years), 3 patients with vascular cognitive impairment with no dementia (VCI-ND; 74–87 years), and 6 healthy volunteers (72–85 years). Latency peaks, equivalent current dipole (ECD) strength, and bilateral ECD position were recorded. The MEG data were superimposed on magnetic resonance imaging to produce magnetic source imaging. Results Compared to controls, SIVD patients showed increased M20 latency and ECD strength. There were no significant differences in M20 inter-hemispheric positions across diagnostic categories. At M100, SIVD patients showed delayed auditory evoked magnetic field latency compared to controls. However, ECD strength and 3-dimensional inter-hemispheric differences were similar across the groups at the M100 measurement. Conclusions Changes in somatosensory and auditory evoked magnetic field changes correlated with cognitive impairment in SIVD patients. Magnetic field latency measures may provide an objective and sensitive index for early dementia detection and monitoring of cognitive function.

A series of aqueous latexes with solid contents of 56%–59% were synthesized by binary emulsion copolymerization of vinylidene chloride (VDC) with an acrylate, namely methyl acrylate (MA), ethyl acrylate (EA), butyl acrylate (BA), hexyl acrylate (HA), or 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (EHA). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy showed that the acrylate units with short ester side-chains, such as MA and EA, made the copolymers hard and the crystallization tendency of their PVDC segments was reduced. Hydrophobic acrylates with relatively long ester groups, such as HA and EHA, gave flexible copolymers, and favored the crystallization of their PVDC segments. BA endowed the copolymers with medium flexibility and crystallization tendency. As coating materials, the copolymers bearing MA and EA adhered poorly to the tinplate before or after 100 hr of salt-spray corrosion, whereas those bearing BA, HA, or EHA showed good adhesion to tinplate when they had little or no crystallinity. After 100 hr of salt-spray corrosion, only BA–VDC80, containing 80% VDC, retained both excellent adhesion to metal and excellent barrier performance. Further study demonstrated that BA–VDC80 could protect tinplate from rusting for at least 250 hr under harsh salt-spray corrosion. To investigate the characteristics of somatosensory evoked magnetic fields (SEF) in patients with acute cerebral infarction by magnetoencephalgraphy (MEG).SEFs were recorded from 17 patients with acute cerebral infarction and 18 healthy volunteers using 306-channel whole-head MEG. The electric stimuli were presented with interstimulus intervals of 0.5 s. The peaks of SEF were estimated by equivalent current dipole (ECD), which were superimposed on MRI.M20 was the most elemental components of SEF in all subjects, originating from the area close to the "hand area" of the primary somatosensory cortex. There appeared several abnormal SEF parameters in the patient group: (1) the value of interhemispheric difference of the M20 positions was (8 +/- 4) mm in the normal group and (11 +/- 3) mm in the patient group (P0.01); (2) the peak latency of M20 responses in the healthy group was (20.7 +/- 1.1) ms, significantly shorter than those in both the unaffected hemisphere and affected hemisphere in the patient group, (21.8 +/- 1.2) ms and (23.6 +/- 1.9) ms, (both P0.01); (3) the strength of ECD in the affected hemisphere was (17 +/- 10) nAm, significantly smaller than that in the unaffected hemisphere, (26 +/- 10) nAm (P0.01).Latent cortical impairment may be evaluated by MEG with higher spatial and temporal resolution. MEG provides objective and sensitive indexes to evaluate the function of somatosensory cortex in patients with acute cerebral infarction.
