Purpose: To explore preservice teachers' (PSTs) implementation of cooperative learning (CL) during their school-based student-teaching after undertaking a CL course in a Chinese physical education teacher education program. Method: An interpretive qualitative case study design gathered data from eight PSTs using classroom observations, semistructured interviews, reflective journals, instructional materials, and field notes. Interactive cycling coding was used to analyze the data. Findings: The two themes, "putting five key elements into practice" and "learning to facilitate with CL," convey how the PSTs implemented the procedures of CL and adapted CL to the contexts they were teaching in. Discussion and Conclusions: The eight PSTs appropriately implemented CL and contextualized CL practice in their classrooms. They shifted their teaching approaches away from direct instruction and toward more independent, pupil group-based tasks. This growth is particularly important in the Chinese physical education context, where policies advocate for CL yet student-centered teaching which is rarely seen in practice.

This article explored the effects of the addition of SA on the in-vitro digestion characteristics of lipids and fat-soluble nutrients (vitamin E) in the whole nutrition food for special medical purposes for children aged 1 to 10 years old. The results showed that the addition of SA can promote the dispersibility of the food for special medical purposes in water. The droplet size decreased from 0.84±0.09 μm to 0.63±0.04 μm with the addition of SA, while there was no significance in ζ-potential (P>0.05). SA showed a positive effect on the release rate of fatty acids and the bioavailability of vitamin E. The release rate of fatty acids increased from 76.65% to 93.10%, and the bioaccessibility of vitamin E increased from 79.75% to 91.64%. In addition, the addition of SA had no significant effect on the oxidative stability during lipid digestion in special medical foods (P>0.05). This study provides an important reference basis for the subsequent application of SA in special medical and dietary food additives.

Abstract Background Most Chinese blood centers have implemented mini pool (MP) HBV nucleic acid testing (NAT) together with HBsAg ELISA in routine blood donor screening for HBV infection since 2015, and a few centers upgraded MP to individual donation (ID) NAT screening recently, raising urgent need for cost-benefit analysis of different screening strategies. In an effort to prevent transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs) for HBV, cost-benefit analyses of three different screening strategies: HBsAg alone, HBsAg plus MP NAT and HBsAg plus ID NAT were performed in blood donors from southern China where HBV infection was endemic. Methods MP-6 HBV NAT and ID NAT were adopted in parallel to screen blood donors for further comparative analysis. On the basis of screening data and the documented parameters, the number of window period (WP) infection, HBV acute infection, chronic hepatitis B infection (CHB) and occult hepatitis B infection (OBI) was evaluated, and the potential prevented HBV TTIs and benefits of these three strategies were predicted based on cost-benefit analysis by an estimation model. To retrospectively explore the characteristics of plasma amino acids (PAAs) in children with autism spectrum disorder and their clinical association via case-control study. A total of 110 autistic and 55 healthy children were recruited from 2014 to 2018. The clinical phenotypes included severity of autism, cognition, adaptability, and regression. Compared with the control group, autistic children had significantly elevated glutamate, [gamma]-Amino-n-butyric acid, glutamine, sarcosine, [delta]-aminolevulinic acid, glycine and citrulline. In contrast, their plasma level of ethanolamine, phenylalanine, tryptophan, homocysteine, pyroglutamic acid, hydroxyproline, ornithine, histidine, lysine, and glutathione were significantly lower. Elevated neuroactive amino acids (glutamate) and decreased essential amino acids were mostly distinct characteristics of PAAs of autistic children. Increased level of tryptophan might be associated with severity of autism.

Light has profoundly impacted modern medicine and healthcare, with numerous luminescent agents and imaging techniques currently being used to assess health and treat diseases. As an emerging concept in luminescence, aggregation-induced emission (AIE) has shown great potential in biological applications due to its advantages in terms of brightness, biocompatibility, photostability, and positive correlation with concentration. This review provides a comprehensive summary of AIE luminogens applied in imaging of biological structure and dynamic physiological processes, disease diagnosis and treatment, and detection and monitoring of specific analytes, followed by representative works. Discussions on critical issues and perspectives on future directions are also included. This review aims to stimulate the interest of researchers from different fields, including chemistry, biology, materials science, medicine, etc., thus promoting the development of AIE in the fields of life and health.

Abstract In order to identify the time-varying frequency and amplitude of structural vibration based on the bridge structural health monitoring data and obtain the cable force of cable-stayed bridges in real time, a spectrum analysis method based on amplitude and phase estimation (APES) was proposed in this study. The amplitude spectrum of the acceleration data is first calculated by the APES method, the real-time spectrogram of the cable is obtained by the sliding window method. Then the modal frequency and amplitude are automatically extracted from the real-time spectrum by using a frequency extrusion post-processing technique, which can be regarded as the average value of the instantaneous frequency and amplitude respectively. Next, the fundamental frequency of the cable is extracted by using an automatic identification method, and the performance of the proposed method is verified. Finally, real-time scoring of cable forces and structural condition assessment is achieved with consideration of the moderation index model as well as the material strength. The results show that the APES method can use shorter calculation samples than the traditional Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) to obtain higher resolution and more accurate amplitude, which provides a theoretical basis for the real-time identification of fundamental frequency based on short-term monitoring data. The frequency extrusion post-processing-algorithm can reduce the spectrum recognition delay and improve timeliness of the cable force evaluation. The time-varying cable force with an interval of 10 s can be used to reflect the health status of the cable in time. The research results can provide technical support for the real-time extraction of cable force of long-span cable-stayed bridges, and can also provide an effective basis for component condition evaluation and bridge maintenance decision-making.

The impact of cadmium (Cd) toxicity on fish liver injury has received much attention in recent years. Currently, autophagy, apoptosis and endoplasmic reticulum stress were reported in Cd exposed fish liver, and if there are other mechanisms (such as ferroptosis) and relevant signaling pathways involved in fish remains unknown. An experiment was conducted to investigate Cd toxicity in Channa argus (Cantor, 1842) exposed to 0, 1.0, and 2.0 mg Cd/L of water for 96 h. Cd disrupted the structure of mitochondria in the liver. Besides, Cd induced ferroptosis by significantly increasing the level of Fe2+, ROS, MDA and significantly decreasing the level of Ferritin, GSH, GSH-Px, GPX4, GST and SOD (p < 0.05 in all cases). In addition, the mRNA expression of ferroptosis related genes, gpx4 and slc7a11, were significantly downregulated by Cd. Moreover, Cd exposure significantly inhibited the Nrf2/Keap1 signaling pathway, one of the pathways involved in ferroptosis, by upregulating the mRNA levels of keap1a and keap1b, and downregulating the mRNA levels of nrf2 and its target genes (ho-1, nqo1 and cat). Cd exposure also caused extensive accumulation of vacuoles and lipid droplets in liver, as well as an increase in triglyceride content. Cd significantly affected lipid metabolism related enzyme activity and gene expression, which were also regulated by Nrf2/Keap1 signaling pathway. In summary, these results indicate that ferroptosis is a mechanism in waterborne Cd exposed fish liver injury via the Nrf2/Keap1 signaling pathway and the Cd induced hepatic steatosis is also modulated by Nrf2/Keap1 pathway at the whole-body level in fish. These findings provide new insights into the fish liver injury and molecular basis of Cd toxicity.

Carbon dots (CDs) prepared from biomass usually produce poor quantum yield and reproducibility. A fine separation of raw materials may enhance the fluorescence performance. In this work, embryos of cumin seeds were precisely chosen as the carbon source to prepare (CDs) through hydrothermal method. The obtained product (CDs-E) possessed a higher quantum yield of 10.60 % than those synthesized with testas or whole seeds, which may be due to the relatively smaller particle size and more C-N functional groups. Rutin, as a common natural active component, could quench the fluorescence of CDs-E notably through internal filtering effect. Herein, a highly selective fluorescent sensor based on CDs-E for detecting rutin was proposed with a linearity range of 0.05 ∼ 30 μM and a detection limit of 0.015 μM obtained. Additionally, the developed method was successfully applied for the detection of rutin in Flos Sophorae, rutin tablets and capsules. This work showed the significance of fine classification for natural carbon source in preparation of CDs and provided a feasible method for quality monitoring of rutin-related pharmaceuticals, health care products and traditional Chinese medicinal materials.

Abstract Background Sepsis and acute kidney injury (AKI) are common severe diseases in the intensive care unit (ICU). This study aimed to estimate the attributable mortality of AKI among critically ill patients with sepsis and to assess whether AKI was an independent risk factor for 30-day mortality. Methods The information we used was derived from a multicenter prospective cohort study conducted in 18 Chinese ICUs, focusing on septic patients post ICU admission. The patients were categorized into two groups: those who developed AKI (AKI group) within seven days following a sepsis diagnosis and those who did not develop AKI (non-AKI group). Using propensity score matching (PSM), patients were matched 1:1 as AKI and non-AKI groups. We then calculated the mortality rate attributable to AKI in septic patients. Furthermore, a survival analysis was conducted comparing the matched AKI and non-AKI septic patients. The primary outcome of interest was the 30-day mortality rate following the diagnosis of sepsis. Results Out of the 2175 eligible septic patients, 61.7% developed AKI. After the application of PSM, a total of 784 septic patients who developed AKI were matched in a 1:1 ratio with 784 septic patients who did not develop AKI. The overall 30-day attributable mortality of AKI was 6.6% (95% CI 2.3 ∼ 10.9%, p = 0.002). A subgroup analysis revealed that the 30-day attributable mortality rates for stage 1, stage 2, and stage 3 AKI were 0.6% (95% CI −5.9 ∼ 7.2%, p = 0.846), 4.7% (95% CI −3.1 ∼ 12.4%, p = 0.221) and 16.8% (95% CI 8.1 ∼ 25.2%, p

Abstract This study investigates the Tip Clearance Cavitation (TCC) characteristics of three different Tip Clearances (TC) (0.4, 0.6, 0.8) and five inlet negative pressure conditions Pj = (− 20–60)kPa to improve the reliability of the aerospace high-speed centrifugal pump during in-orbit operation, based on the premise of good agreement between the TC 0.6 test curve and the simulation performance curve. Under negative pressure and high-speed conditions, the variation gradient of cavitation characteristics with various inlet negative pressures is non-linear and has a sudden change, but the trend becomes stable after the inlet negative pressure drops to a certain stage. The tip clearance cavitation characteristics vary from the blade surface cavitation characteristics due to the difference in forces on both sides. This study is a proper starting point for the design of aerospace power pumps.

Abstract Background Both sepsis and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) are common severe diseases in the intensive care unit (ICU). There is no large-scale multicenter study to clarify the attributable mortality of ARDS among septic patients. This study aimed to evaluate the excess mortality of ARDS in critically ill patients with sepsis. Coastal structures are prone to corrosion damage due to prolonged exposure to harsh corrosive environments, resulting in shortened service life and increased maintenance costs. Therefore, state-of-the-art technology is needed for rapid detection of corrosion in steel structures. This paper investigated the impact of training dataset quality on image recognition accuracy based on convolutional neural network technology. Multiple datasets were collected and used for neural network training, with the training results analysed using evaluation metrics. The research outcomes indicated that the quantity of data samples can improve at most by 1.2 times in terms of the average precision, while an excessive number of negative samples could interfere with the model’s ability to recognize positive samples, thereby reducing the precision. Instance segmentation datasets, compared to object detection datasets, were more sensitive to small objects due to their richer annotation information. This paper also proposed methods for improving datasets to enhance model prediction performance. The optimized model, combined with drone photography technology, was applied to practical engineering for bridge corrosion detection, providing technical support for intelligent bridge maintenance.

Sediment scour numerical simulation plays a critical role in the design of water-resistant foundation engineering, and this paper addresses a significant gap in most related studies, which often overlook the transformation of sediment and struggle to identify the actual riverbed obscured by yielding bed and suspended load. To tackle this challenge, a comprehensive sediment model based on the meshless Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method was developed. Firstly, to enhance computational efficiency and mitigate the high cost of Fluid-Solid Interaction (FSI) between water and sediments, cohesionless sediment grains were modelled as non-Newtonian fluids, with yield strength determined according to a combined strength criterion. Subsequently, sediment transformation and identification were determined based on sediment particle velocity and shear stress, with the seepage force driving yield sediment particle motion at the interface. The effectiveness of this comprehensive sediment model was validated through comparison with three scour experiments. The results show better agreement between the model and experimental data, with a root-mean-square error of less than 2.17% in scour morphology simulation and successful identification of the actual post-scouring bed surface in each case. However, the free surface simulation in this model still exhibits slight error, with a root-mean-square error of less than 8.35%.

The lack of early renal function recovery among geriatric patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) in the intensive care unit (ICU) is a commonly observed and acknowledged poor prognostic factor, especially for older adults. However, no reliable prognostic biomarker is available for identifying individuals at risk of renal non-recovery or mortality in older adults. In this prospective observational cohort study, we enrolled critically ill older adults (aged ≥ 60 years) with AKI from the ICU and followed their disease progression. The primary endpoint was renal non-recovery within seven days of follow-up, while the secondary endpoint was the determinants of 30-day mortality after AKI. We assessed the predictive accuracy using receiver operating characteristic curves and performed between-group comparisons using the log-rank test. Among 209 older adults, 117 (56.0%) experienced renal recovery. Multiple regression analysis revealed that urine levels of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-2 (TIMP-2) multiplied by insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 7 (IGFBP7) ([TIMP-2]*[IGFBP7]), AKI stages 2–3, and the Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE II) score were independently associated with renal non-recovery. Diaphragm walls have been widely applied in long-span suspension bridges due to superior mechanical performance and extensive adaptability to various geological conditions. However, limited studies focused on the structural behaviour of rigid joints for diaphragm walls. This paper hence presented the flexural performance of joints through experimental investigation and numerical analysis. Two types of joints were designed to compare the structural response in terms of failure modes and moment resistance. Parametric analysis was carried out to explore critical parameters that influenced the joint performance significantly. A related provision in a current design code was evaluated to check if it was compatible to predict the moment capacity of designed joints. Results suggested that concrete cracks dominated the moment resistance of joints, and numerical analysis was reliable to predict the damage development as well as the moment-deflection relationship. The joint with U-shaped rebar exhibited more excellent performance that the counterpart with C-T lock. The critical parameters that could affect the member behaviour consisted of reinforcement strength, reinforcement diameter and a distance between tensile reinforcement and beam edge. The current design code provided nonconservative estimations of moment capacity, and thus a reduction factor should be proposed to promote satisfactory application.

Cognitive impairment (COI) is a prevalent complication across a spectrum of brain disorders, underpinned by intricate mechanisms yet to be fully elucidated. Neurons, the principal cell population of the nervous system, orchestrate cognitive processes and govern cognitive balance. Extensive inquiry has spotlighted the involvement of Foxo3a in COI. The regulatory cascade of Foxo3a transactivation implicates multiple downstream signaling pathways encompassing mitochondrial function, oxidative stress, autophagy, and apoptosis, collectively affecting neuronal activity. Notably, the expression and activity profile of neuronal Foxo3a are subject to modulation via various modalities, including methylation of promoter, phosphorylation and acetylation of protein. Furthermore, upstream pathways such as PI3K/AKT, the SIRT family, and diverse micro-RNAs intricately interface with Foxo3a, engendering alterations in neuronal function. Through several downstream routes, Foxo3a regulates neuronal dynamics, thereby modulating the onset or amelioration of COI in Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, ischemic brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, and traumatic brain injury. Foxo3a is a potential therapeutic cognitive target, and clinical drugs or multiple small molecules have been preliminarily shown to have cognitive-enhancing effects that indirectly affect Foxo3a. Particularly noteworthy are multiple randomized, controlled, placebo clinical trials illustrating the significant cognitive enhancement achievable through autophagy modulation. Here, we discussed the role of Foxo3a in neuron-mediated COI and common cognitively impaired diseases.

BackgroundUsing a pig model of cardiopulmonary bypass, we compared outcomes after cardioplegia either with our in-house “Huaxi-1” solution containing natural blood and crystalloid or with the entirely crystalloid, commercially available “histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate” solution.MethodsCardiopulmonary bypass was established in 13 healthy male pigs. Twelve of those animals were randomized to receive a single dose of either Huaxi-1 or entirely crystalloid cardioplegia, while the remaining animal was assigned to receive Huaxi-1 without randomization. All animals were then subjected to whole-heart ischemia for 90 min, followed by 2 h of reperfusion, after which myocardial injury was assessed in terms of cardiac function, myocardial pathology and levels of biomarkers in plasma, while levels of high-energy phosphate in myocardium were assayed using liquid chromatography.ResultsAnimals given Huaxi-1 cardioplegia required significantly less time to be weaned off bypass, they received significantly lower doses of norepinephrine, and they showed significantly higher levels (mean ± SD) of adenosine triphosphate (14 ± 4 vs. 8 ± 2 µg/mg, P = 0.005), adenosine diphosphate (16 ± 2 vs. 13 ± 2 µg/mg, P = 0.046), and total adenine nucleotide (37 ± 4 vs. 30 ± 3 µg/mg, P = 0.006) in myocardium after 2 h of reperfusion. They also showed less severe bleeding, edema and injury to mitochondria and myofibers in myocardium. The two groups did not differ significantly in doses of inotropic drugs received, cardiac output or levels of biomarkers in plasma.ConclusionsIn this animal model of healthy hearts subjected to 90 min of ischemia, Huaxi-1 cardioplegia may be superior to entirely crystalloid cardioplegia for promoting energy generation and attenuating ischemia/reperfusion injury in myocardium.

Flow boiling in the rod bundle channel is an important phenomenon in nuclear reactors. The local inhomogeneous void fraction distribution in the flow channel will affect the flow and heat transfer in two phase flow. A 5 × 5 rod bundle test section is designed and utilized in the experiments and a conductivity probe is utilized to measure the local void fraction of two phase flow. A remote-control stepping driving assembly is designed to drive the void probe. The local void fraction characteristics at the outlet of a 5 × 5 rod bundle channel during subcooled boiling and saturated boiling are experimentally studied when the system pressure is 2∼3 MPa. The outlet subcooling ranges from 0 °C to 18 °C. The mass flux is 2000 kg/m2s and the heat flux ranges from 186.3 kW/m2 to 320.8 kW/m2.The effects of thermal parameters on local phase interfacial parameters in subcooled boiling and saturated boiling are obtained. The research results are important for revealing the two phase flow mechanisms in rod bundle channels.

Previous studies have demonstrated that the underlying mechanisms of myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury (MIRI) are complex and involve multiple types of regulatory cell death, including ferroptosis, apoptosis, and autophagy. Thus, we aimed to identify the mechanisms underlying MIRI and validate the protective role of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) and its related mechanisms in MIRI. An in vivo and in vitro models of MIRI were constructed. The results showed that pretreatment with EGCG could attenuate MIRI, as indicated by increased cell viability, reduced lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity and apoptosis, inhibited iron overload, abnormal lipid metabolism, preserved mitochondrial function, decreased infarct size, maintained cardiac function, decreased reactive oxygen species (ROS) level, and reduced TUNEL-positive cells. Additionally, EGCG pretreatment could attenuate ferroptosis, apoptosis, and autophagy induced by MIRI via upregulating 14–3–3η protein levels. Furthermore, the protective effects of EGCG could be abolished with pAd/14–3–3η-shRNA or Compound C11 (a 14–3–3η inhibitor) but not pAd/NC-shRNA. In conclusion, EGCG pretreatment attenuated ferroptosis, apoptosis, and autophagy by mediating 14–3–3η and protected cardiomyocytes against MIRI.

The known methods for the preparation of acylphosphine oxides and polyfluorobenzene-substituted triarylphosphines need to utilize PCl3, while the chlorine-free methods are not reported. In this work, we report a chlorine-free method by one-pot three-component reaction of white phosphorus (P4), dilithio reagents, and acyl chlorines or polyfluorobenzenes for the synthesis of biphenyl-based acylphosphine oxides and phosphines. This reaction is green and environmentally friendly compared with the traditional method, because it avoids the use of Cl2 and the discharge of a large amount of waste gas and waste acid. These two products have potential applications as photoinitiators in photopolymerization or as organophosphorus ligands in catalytic reactions.

This article introduces a case of pelvic actinomycosis, which is easily confused with an ovarian malignant tumor. These images are from a 52-year-old woman who was admitted to hospital with difficulty defecating. Colonoscopy and biopsy indicated inflammatory changes within the intestinal tract, but the anti-inflammatory treatment was not effective. Later, she was readmitted due to abdominal pain and emaciation, and laboratory findings revealed mild anemia and inflammation. Various tumor markers are normal. CT suggested inflammatory lesions in the sigmoid colon and upper rectum. PET-CT considered a high metabolic mass originating from the mesentery. Ultrasound scan revealed a mixed-echo mass adjacent to the right side of the uterus, poorly demarcated from the rectum and right ovary, suggesting a neoplastic lesion. A biopsy of the right ovarian mass indicated suppurative inflammation, with negative antacid staining and microscopic observation of yellowish sulfur granules, suggestive of Actinomyces infection. Following a 12-month treatment regimen involving the removal of an intrauterine device and administration of penicillin, the patient’s condition markedly improved. Pelvic actinomycosis is usually characterized by abdominal pain accompanied by an abdominal mass, which is often related to an intrauterine device (IUD), and is very difficult to distinguish from pelvic tumors and tuberculosis, so it is necessary for doctors to understand its clinical and imaging features.

Tea plants are a perennial crop with significant economic value. Chlorophyll, a key factor in tea leaf color and photosynthetic efficiency, is affected by the photoperiod and usually exhibits diurnal and seasonal variations. In this study, high-throughput transcriptomic analysis was used to study the chlorophyll metabolism, under different photoperiods, of tea plants. We conducted a time-series sampling under a skeleton photoperiod (6L6D) and continuous light conditions (24 L), measuring the chlorophyll and carotenoid content at a photoperiod interval of 3 h (24 h). Transcriptome sequencing was performed at six time points across two light cycles, followed by bioinformatics analysis to identify and annotate the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) involved in chlorophyll metabolism. The results revealed distinct expression patterns of key genes in the chlorophyll biosynthetic pathway. The expression levels of CHLE (magnesium-protoporphyrin IX monomethyl ester cyclase gene), CHLP (geranylgeranyl reductase gene), CLH (chlorophyllase gene), and POR (cytochrome P450 oxidoreductase gene), encoding enzymes in chlorophyll synthesis, were increased under continuous light conditions (24 L). At 6L6D, the expression levels of CHLP1.1, POR1.1, and POR1.2 showed an oscillating trend. The expression levels of CHLP1.2 and CLH1.1 showed the same trend, they both decreased under light treatment and increased under dark treatment. Our findings provide potential insights into the molecular basis of how photoperiods regulate chlorophyll metabolism in tea plants.
