Abstract

Inbreeding and inbreeding depression have been studied since the days of Darwin and yet we are still making important discoveries today. These discoveries can inform conservation practices as inbreeding depression can contribute to population extinction. Inbreeding is also an important subject in evolutionary biology as the selection pressures arising from inbreeding depression can profoundly shape the evolution of breeding behaviour. Several recent theoretical studies have argued that inbreeding avoidance should not always evolve and that because inbreeding increases the proportion of genes shared amongst relatives it can influence the evolution of altruism. In fact, current theory is rather at odds with the almost ubiquitous observation of inbreeding avoidance in empirical studies. The banded mongoose (Mungos mungo) is a cooperative breeder which is unusual in that it frequently engages in incest. As part of the Banded Mongoose Research Project I have quantified the level of inbreeding and investigated both its causes and consequences. My study used 23 years of detailed behavioural observations on 1,956 individuals genotyped at 35-43 microsatellite loci. These genotypes were used to generate a nine-generation deep pedigree and inbreeding was estimated using the pedigree and microsatellite heterozygosity. Using generalised linear mixed models (GLMMs) I analysed the consequences of inbreeding using several measures of individual fitness and contributions to cooperative care. Finally I used piecewise structural equation modelling to investigate how changes in social variables influence individual breeding behaviour and ultimately cause inbreeding. I found that incest is common in the banded mongoose despite severe inbreeding depression in numerous traits. This can be detected using both pedigree and genetic measures of inbreeding but combining both measures can provide the most explanatory power (Chapter 2). Inbreeding depression in juvenile survival can be reduced by offspring care, but offspring care itself suffers inbreeding depression which should oppose the evolution of closed inbred systems (Chapter 3). Finally, I show that breeding behaviour is adaptively adjusted according to the risk of inbreeding as the social environment changes (Chapter 4). Understanding how inbreeding depression varies with genetic and environmental conditions is essential to explain the selection pressures that govern the evolution of mating behaviour. There is increasing awareness of the theoretical prediction that inbreeding depression does not inevitably lead to selection for inbreeding avoidance. In this thesis I find that inbreeding depression is not fixed but can be reduced by offspring care, which can potentially cause evolutionary feedback loops between inbreeding and care that have rarely been considered. Furthermore, inbreeding avoidance behaviour was not fixed but plastically adapted to environmental conditions which not only makes recording breeding behaviours more challenging but may also alter the selection pressures acting on them. In summary this thesis demonstrates the importance of several complexities of inbreeding behaviour in a wild population which must be more widely considered in order to fully understand the evolution of breeding behaviours.

Abstract

Spatial filtering has been central in the development of large eddy simulation reduced order models (LES-ROMs) and regularized reduced order models (Reg-ROMs), In this paper, we perform a numerical investigation of spatial filtering. To this end, we consider one of the simplest Reg-ROMs, the Leray ROM (L-ROM), which uses ROM spatial filtering to smooth the flow variables and decreases the amount of energy aliased to the lower index ROM basis functions. We also propose a new form of ROM differential filter and use it as a spatial filter for the L-ROM. We investigate the performance of this new form of ROM differential filter in the numerical simulation of a flow past a circular cylinder at a Reynolds number $Re=760$., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

This document presents the Conceptual Design Report (CDR) put forward by an international neutrino community to pursue the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment at the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF/DUNE), a groundbreaking science experiment for long-baseline neutrino oscillation studies and for neutrino astrophysics and nucleon decay searches. The DUNE far detector will be a very large modular liquid argon time-projection chamber (LArTPC) located deep underground, coupled to the LBNF multi-megawatt wide-band neutrino beam. DUNE will also have a high-resolution and high-precision near detector.

Abstract

Ionization of atoms and molecules in strong laser fields is a fundamental process in many fields of research, especially in the emerging field of attosecond science. So far, demonstrably accurate data have only been acquired for atomic hydrogen (H), a species that is accessible to few investigators. Here we present measurements of the ionization yield for argon, krypton, and xenon with percentlevel accuracy, calibrated using H, in a laser regime widely used in attosecond science. We derive a transferrable calibration standard for laser peak intensity, accurate to 1.3%, that is based on a simple reference curve. In addition, our measurements provide a much-needed benchmark for testing models of ionisation in noble-gas atoms, such as the widely employed single-active electron approximation., Comment: Article: 5 pages, 2 figures, submitted to PRL (manuscript number LZ14457). Abstract

The nucleosynthesis of elements beyond iron is dominated by neutron captures in the s and r processes. However, 32 stable, proton-rich isotopes cannot be formed during those processes, because they are shielded from the s-process flow and r-process beta-decay chains. These nuclei are attributed to the p and rp process. For all those processes, current research in nuclear astrophysics addresses the need for more precise reaction data involving radioactive isotopes. Depending on the particular reaction, direct or inverse kinematics, forward or time-reversed direction are investigated to determine or at least to constrain the desired reaction cross sections. The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will offer unique, unprecedented opportunities to investigate many of the important reactions. The high yield of radioactive isotopes, even far away from the valley of stability, allows the investigation of isotopes involved in processes as exotic as the r or rp processes., Comment: Invited Talk given at the Conference Nuclear Physice in Astrophysics VI (NPA6), Lisbon, Portugal, May 19-24 2013. Abstract

The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) is a European project to develop and operate the next generation gamma-ray spectrometer. AGATA is based on the technique of gamma-ray energy tracking in electrically segmented high-purity germanium crystals. This technique requires the accurate determination of the energy, time and position of every interaction as a gamma ray deposits its energy within the detector volume. Reconstruction of the full interaction path results in a detector with very high efficiency and excellent spectral response. The realization of gamma-ray tracking and AGATA is a result of many technical advances. These include the development of encapsulated highly-segmented germanium detectors assembled in a triple cluster detector cryostat, an electronics system with fast digital sampling and a data acquisition system to process the data at a high rate. The full characterization of the crystals was measured and compared with detector-response simulations. This enabled pulse-shape analysis algorithms, to extract energy, time and position, to be employed. In addition, tracking algorithms for event reconstruction were developed. The first phase of AGATA is now complete and operational in its first physics campaign. In the future AGATA will be moved between laboratories in Europe and operated in a series of campaigns to take advantage of the different beams and facilities available to maximize its science output. Abstract

BZ UMa is a cataclysmic variable star whose specific classification has eluded researchers since its discovery in 1968. It has outburst and spectral properties consistent with both U Gem class dwarf novae and intermediate polars. We present new photometric and polarimetric measurements of recent outbursts, including the first detected superoutburst of the system. Statistical analysis of these and archival data from outbursts over the past 40 years present a case for BZ UMa as a non-magnetic, U Gem class, SU-UMa subclass dwarf novae., Comment: Accepted by PASP for the November, 2009 issue

Abstract

The ALPHA collaboration, based at CERN, has recently succeeded in confining cold antihydrogen atoms in a magnetic minimum neutral atom trap and has performed the first study of a resonant transition of the anti-atoms. The ALPHA apparatus will be described herein, with emphasis on the structural aspects, diagnostic methods and techniques that have enabled antihydrogen trapping and experimentation to be achieved. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

20. Exploring Emotional Intelligence Correlates in Selected Populations of College Students.

Abstract

This study examined the role played by emotional intelligence on occupational success, seeking to correlate college grades with measures of emotional intelligence. The study, conducted at a Canadian community college, involved two student populations: an adult education group and a group of automotive service technicians in a pre-employment center. The BarOn EQ-1 test of emotional intelligence was administered to both groups in the winter 2000 term. The test gives scores in five general areas: intrapersonal, interpersonal, adaptability, stress management, and general mode, suggesting that it could yield information that would enhance student development. The adult education group (n=41) was tested at the end of a year of school experience; one group (n=12) of automotive technicians was tested at the end of their first year; the second group (n=9) was tested at the end of the two-year program. While the study results showed some small positive correlations between shop grades in the second year of the program and total scores on the test, the small sample size and the possibility of confounding variables limit the conclusions that can be drawn from this research. Abstract

CHICOS (California HIgh school Cosmic ray ObServatory) is presently an array of more than 140 detectors distributed over a large area (~400 km^2) of southern California, and will consist of 180 detectors at 90 locations in the near future. These sites, located at area schools, are equipped with computerized data acquisition and automatic nightly data transfer (via internet) to our Caltech lab. The installed sites make up the largest currently operating ground array for ultra-high energy cosmic ray research in the northern hemisphere. The goal of CHICOS is to provide data related to the flux and distribution of arrival directions for ultra-high energy cosmic rays. We have performed detailed Monte-Carlo calculations to determine the density and arrival-time distribution of charged particles in extensive air showers for the CHICOS array. Calculations were performed for proton primaries with energies 10^18 to 10^21 eV and zenith angles out to 50 degrees. We have developed novel parameterizations for both distributions as functions of distance from the shower axis, primary energy, and incident zenith angle. 35. No evidence for age-related differences in mtRNA quality in the female germline

Abstract

Mitochondrial quality is implicated as a contributor to declining fertility with aging. We investigated mitochondrial transcripts in oocytes and their associated cumulus cells from mice of different ages using RNA-seq. Mice aged 3 weeks, 9 weeks, and 1 year were superovulated and 48 hr later, oocyte cumulus complexes collected by follicle puncture. We did not detect any major differences that could be attributed to aging. However, mitochondrial RNA transcripts which deviated from the consensus sequence were found at a higher frequency in cumulus cells than in their corresponding oocyte. Previous investigations have shown that variation in the sequence of mtRNA transcripts is substantial, and at least some of this can be accounted for by post-transcriptional modifications which impact base calling during sequencing. Our data would be consistent with either less post-transcriptional modification in mitochondrial RNA from oocytes than cumulus cells or with lower mtDNA mutational load.

Abstract

We describe a plan to create an auditable version of Multics. The engineering experiments of that plan are now complete. Type extension as a design discipline has been demonstrated feasible, even for the internal workings of an operating system, where many subtle intermodule dependencies were discovered and controlled.
