Lithium ion capacitors (LICs) are deemed to be an ideal complement between lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitors. However, the sluggish kinetics that leads to a poor rate capability of Faradaic insertion anodes remains a handicap. Herein, a self-supported architecture is designed by combining an interconnected graphene scroll (GS) framework with in situ formed well-distributed MnO nanoparticles (NPs) for an advanced LIC anode. In this architecture, the inner-connected tubular GS framework plays a multifunctional role: serving as an electron transport bridge like “highways”, providing a favorable ion transport pathway as well as accommodating the volume expansion and maintaining the structural stability of MnO. Benefiting from the stable structure, highly localized charge-transfer and low energy diffusion barrier, the as-built anode exhibits an ultrahigh-rate behavior (203 mAh g−1 at 20 A g−1) and robust cycling stability (759 mAh g−1 after 1000 cycles at 2 A g−1). When evaluated as a self-supported anode for LIC, the LIC delivers a high energy density of 179.3 Wh kg−1, a high power density of 11.7 kW kg−1, and a capacity retention of 80.8% after 5000 cycles. Moreover, the corresponding soft-packaged LIC keeps stable electrochemical performances at various bending states. All these features manifest the potential of the architecture for application in advanced energy storage devices.

We report an innovative method for the fast preparation of wafer-scale uniform single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) films with controllable density by NaHCO3 tuning the interaction between amine-functionalized substrates and surfactant-dispersing SWCNTs in aqueous solution. With this technique, a 4-inch SWCNT film with a linear density of ∼30 tubes/μm can be achieved in 1 s, and over 60 tubes/μm within 30 s using a high-concentration SWCNT solution. The SWCNT density changes by less than 8% over a 4-inch area. The electrical uniformity of the as-prepared wafer-scale single-chirality SWCNT film was demonstrated to be within 10.8% for subthreshold swing and 12% for carrier mobility and 13.5% for their on-current, which is the most uniform SWCNT films reported so far fabricated from the surfactant-dispersed SWCNT solution. Further, the photodetectors made by the uniform semiconducting SWCNT films exhibit excellent cascading ability, which linearly amplify the output photovoltages and could produce a photovoltage responsivity of 2.5 × 106 V/W. When three-stage cascading photodetectors are used as optical gate to establish an integrated photoelectric system, a 20-mW/cm2 light illumination produces the current responsivity of 147.3 A/W under a source/drain voltage of −0.1 V. Our present technique lays an important foundation for their applications in integrated circuits.

We quantitatively analyze the effect of reabsorption on the Raman spectroscopy of (10, 3) and (8, 3) single-chirality single-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) solutions by varying the detection depth in confocal micro-Raman measurements and SWCNT concentration the in sample solution. The increase of the detection depth and concentration of SWCNTs enhances the reabsorption effect and decreases the intensities of the Raman features. More importantly, reabsorption exhibits different effects on different Raman features such as the radial breathing mode (RBM) and G+ band, strongly depending on the resonance degree of the scattered light energy and the interband transition of SWCNTs. When (10, 3) SWCNTs are excited with a 633 nm laser, the scattered light from RBM has stronger resonance with the interband transition of the SWCNTs than that from the G+ band, leading to a faster reduction in the RBM intensity and a lower intensity ratio of RBM to the G+ band. In contrast, when (8, 3) SWCNTs are excited with a 633 nm laser, reabsorption has the same effect on the RBM and G+ band intensities and thus maintains a constant intensity ratio of RBM to the G+ band. Furthermore, we precisely establish a quantitative relationship of the intensities of the Raman features such as RBM, the G+ band and their intensity ratio as a function of the focal depth and SWCNT concentration by theoretical calculations and numerical simulation, which reproduces the experimental results well. These results are very useful in the precise analysis of the Raman spectroscopy of SWCNTs and thus their applications in molecular detection and imaging.

Planar perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have been demonstrated as a promising architecture for efficient, large-scale, flexible and tandem solar cell. To date, unfortunately, most planar PSCs suffer from current-voltage hysteresis, which derives from interface mismatch, surface defects, ion migration, and ferroelectric property et al. Here, we demonstrate a facile strategy to significantly reduce the hysteresis and improve the performance of planar PSCs by doping gallium (Ga) into tin oxide (SnO2) nanocrystal electron-transport layer using low-temperature solution‐processed method. It is revealed that the Ga-doped SnO2 ETL owning better band alignment with the perovskite absorption layer, which is helpful for electron extraction. It is found that gallium doping severely decreases the trap state density in SnO2, leading to a lower recombination rate and negligible hysteresis. With the optimized doping concentration of Ga ions, the champion device achieves a highest PCE of 18.18% and the hysteresis index is reduced from 23.9% to 1.7%.

Organometallic halide perovskite absorption layer with excellent surface morphology and large grain size is very important for fabricating efficient perovskite solar cells (PSCs). The antisolvent assisted crystallization (ASAC) has been proved to be an effective tactic to prepare compact and uniform polycrystalline perovskite film. However, most of the antisolvents currently used are highly toxic, and the perovskite crystallization process is difficult to control using pure antisolvent. Here, a green strategy is developed to improve the nucleation kinetics of perovskite precursor and the perovskite crystallization process. A mixed green antisolvent of ethyl acetate (EA)/petroleum ether (PE) is employed to regulate the crystallization of perovskite and replace traditional chlorobenzene (CB) and pure EA. With optimized proportion of EA and PE, the supersaturation degree is controlled via reducing the solvent evaporation rate and the nucleation rate, and it is good for crystal growth. Moreover, the grain growth rate and grain size are easily regulated, which contribute to the uniform, large grain and non-pinhole perovskite film. Correspondingly, the intrinsic perovskite solar cells based on CH3NH3PbI3 achieve a power conversion efficiency of 17.19% and an average efficiency of 16.25% (std 0.43).

One of the critical challenges for semiconductor photocatalysis is the high efficiency utilization of solar energy. For plasmonic metal-semiconductor photocatalysts, the photocatalytic activity over an extended wavelength range for a photoresponsive semiconductor could be significantly improved either via the direct electron transfer (DET) or via the plasmon-induced resonant energy transfer (PIRET). Still, the narrow spectral overlap of plasmon and the semiconductor band edge is a key factor in restricting the development of PIRET. Herein, we have introduced a simple and versatile strategy to realize a broad spectral overlap by creating multipolar plasmon resonances near the semiconductor band edge. Cu2O coated Au/Ag nanorods (NRs) were prepared using a facile wet chemistry method. Transverse plasmon modes of Au/Ag/Cu2O NRs can split into dipole and octupole plasmon modes. The core aspect ratio and shell thickness could be used to regulate these two modes for extending the spectral overlap of plasmon resonance and the Cu2O band edge. Au/Ag/Cu2O NRs were found to display enhanced visible light photocatalytic activity compared to spherical Au/Ag/Cu2O nanoparticles. The enhancement mechanism was ascribed to both dipole and octupole plasmon modes boosting electron-hole separation in Cu2O via PIRET as confirmed by transient absorption measurements.

Efficient electron transport layers (ETLs) are the crucial issue for electron transport and hole blocking in organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs). To date, most of the reported effective ETLs have comprised TiO2, which exhibits limited electron mobility and numerous defect states and restricts the enhancement of the performance of PSCs. Hence, the investigation of effective tactics for improving the electronic properties of TiO2 is critical for the fabrication of high-efficiency devices. In this study, a cerium doping method was adopted in mesoporous TiO2, which was prepared via a traditional one-step hydrothermal process, to improve its electron transport properties by recombining nanocrystals and optimizing the negative flat band potential of TiO2. Continuous, aligned and regulated recombined crystals of mesoporous TiO2 were obtained with optimized pathways of electron transport from the ETL to the FTO layer. Moreover, a small amount of Ti4+ ions was replaced by Ce4+ ions in the TiO2 lattice, which led to deformation of the TiO2 lattice and influenced the growth process of TiO2 grains. With an optimized mole proportion of Ce element in the TiO2 precursor, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells was typically boosted to 17.75% in comparison with 15.92% in the case of undoped TiO2.

Sc addition, friction stir processing (FSP), and subsequent solid-solution treatment and aging to peak hardness (T6 treatment) were applied on a 7055 Al alloy. Fine equiaxed grains were obtained after FSP, and the size of the grains was further refined by minor Sc addition. Subsequent solid-solution treatment led to the dissolution of η phase, and aging led to the precipitation of η′ phase in the FSP samples. The Al3(Sc,Zr) particles effectively inhibited the grain coarsening in the Sc-containing FSP sample during the T6 process. Thus, a high density of η′ phase and a fine equiaxed grain structure were obtained in the Sc-containing 7055 alloy after FSP and T6 treatment. The special structure endowed this alloy with higher yield strength than the T6 treated 7055 alloy. FSP enhanced the high-temperature internal friction value of the Sc-containing 7055 alloy, and subsequent T6 treatment did not significantly reduce the value. The Sc-containing 7055 alloy exhibited greater high-temperature internal friction value than the T6 samples and the 7055 alloy fabricated using the same processing route.

Lead acetate-based perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have shown their superiority in terms of controlled grain growth and replacement of traditional lead halides, which is critical for their large-scale commercial applications; however, the lack of control on the grain quality of lead acetate-based perovskite still creates risks such as unwanted defects, pinholes and grain boundaries. Herein, we proposed a reliable method to control the morphology and grain size of lead acetate-based perovskites along with a dynamic solvent-vapor annealing treatment; it was found that the vapors of N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) assisted in the growth of perovskite grains and facilitated the increase in grain size. Using optimized DMF volume, the fabricated planar PSCs with the structure FTO/TiO2/perovskite/spiro-OMeTAD/Ag achieved the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 13.71%, which was 23.8% higher than that of the controlled device. Moreover, the hysteresis effect was negligible. The results demonstrate that the solvent vapor-assisted crystal growth process is a simple and facile way to improve the quality of lead acetate-based perovskites and increase their performance.

Submilligram-scale separation of near-zigzag single-chirality carbon nanotubes has been achieved by gel chromatography., Mass production of zigzag and near-zigzag single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), whether by growth or separation, remains a challenge, which hinders the disclosure of their previously unknown property and practical applications. Here, we report a method to separate SWCNTs by chiral angle through temperature control of a binary surfactant system of sodium cholate (SC) and SDS in gel chromatography. Eleven types of single-chirality SWCNT species with chiral angle less than 20° were efficiently separated including multiple zigzag and near-zigzag species. Among them, (7, 3), (8, 3), (8, 4), (9, 1), (9, 2), (10, 2), and (11, 1), were produced on the submilligram scale. The spectral detection results indicate that lowering the temperature induced selective adsorption and reorganization of the SC/SDS cosurfactants on SWCNTs with different chiral angles, amplifying their interaction difference with gel. We believe that this work is an important step toward industrial separation of single-chirality zigzag and near-zigzag SWCNTs.

Passivation of electronic defects on the surface and at grain boundaries (GBs) of perovskite films has become one of the most effective tactics to suppress charge recombination in perovskite solar cells. It is demonstrated that trap states can be effectively passivated by Lewis acid or base functional groups. In this work, nicotinamide (NTM, commonly known as vitamin B3 or vitamin PP) serving as a Lewis base additive is introduced into the PbI2 and/or FAI: MABr: MACl precursor solution to obtain NTM modified perovskite films. It has been found that the NTM in the perovskite film can well passivate surface and GBs defects, control the film morphology and enhance the crystallinity via its interaction with a lone pair of electrons in nitrogen. In the presence of the NTM additive, we obtained enlarged perovskite crystal grain about 3.6 μm and a champion planar perovskite solar cell with efficiency of 21.72% and negligible hysteresis. Our findings provide an effective route for crystal growth and defect passivation to bring further increases on both efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells.

Single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) films are promising materials as flexible transparent conductive films (TCFs). Here, inspired by the extrusion blown plastic film technique and the SWCNT synthesis approach by floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition (FCCVD), a novel blown aerosol chemical vapor deposition (BACVD) method is reported to directly and continuously produce freestanding SWCNT TCFs at several hundred meters per hour. The synthesis mechanism, involving blowing a stable aerosol bubble and transforming the bubble into an aerogel, is investigated, and a general phase diagram is established for this method. For the SWCNT TCFs via BACVD, both carbon conversion efficiency and SWCNT TCF yield can reach three orders of magnitude higher than those with the conventional FCCVD. The film displays a sheet resistance of 40 ohm sq-1 at 90% transmittance after being doped, representing the record performance based on large-scale SWCNT films. Transparent, flexible, and stretchable electrodes based on BACVD films are demonstrated. Moreover, this high-throughput method of producing SWCNT TCFs can be compatible with the roll-to-roll process for mass production of flexible displays, touch screens, solar cells, and solid-state lighting, and is expected to have a broad and long-term impact on many fields from consumer electronics to energy conversion and generation.

Rechargeable aqueous Zn-ion batteries (AZIBs) are considered alternative stationary storage systems for large-scale applications due to their high safety, low cost, and high power density. However, Zn anode issues including dendrite formation and side reactions greatly hinder the practical application of AZIBs. To solve the Zn anode issues, various strategies based on material designs have been developed. It is necessary to analyze and classify these strategies according to different materials, because different properties of materials determine the underlying mechanisms. In this review, we briefly introduce the fundamental issues in Zn anodes. Furthermore, this review highlights the material designs for the protection of Zn anodes in mild AZIBs. Finally, we also offer insight into potential directions in the material designs to promote the development of AZIBs in the future.

As possible alternatives to traditional thermoelectric (TE) materials, carbon nanomaterials and their hybrid materials have great potential in the future application of flexible and lightweight temperature detection. In this work, an integrated, highly flexible, and tailorable TE temperature detector with high performance has been fabricated based on a continuous single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) fiber. The detector consists of more than one pairs of thermocouples composed of p-type SWCNT fiber and n-type SWCNT hybrid fiber in situ doped by polyethylenimine. Due to the node contact mechanism of the detection, the sensitivity of the detector can be improved with the increase of the number of p-n thermocouples, independent of the length of the thermocouple. The temperature detection process of the detector has been studied in detail. In particular, the integrated and flexible detector can be divided into several sub-detectors easily by cutting, illustrating the prospect of large-scale preparation of this kind of novel temperature detectors. Its high flexibility ensures the detector to maintain excellent detection performance after 15 000 bending circles. Furthermore, the as-designed TE type temperature detector demonstrates a great application promise for real-time temperature detection and temperature change sensing even in complex surface and harsh environment.

In this work, we put forward an effective approach by combining both highly transparent and conductive carbon nanotube (CNT) network and poly (3, 4-ethylene dioxythiophene):poly (styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) film to co-form-coordinate heterojunctions with silicon, and have developed a hybrid PEDOT:PSS-CNT/n-Si solar cell. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the as-designed solar cell can be improved up to 10.2%, which is much higher than the PCE values of both PEDOT:PSS/n-Si (5.5%) and CNT/n-Si (6.1%) solar cells fabricated using the same materials and process. PEDOT:PSS can fill the hundreds nanometer scale pores of the CNT network, both CNT network and PEDOT:PSS patches contact with the silicon concomitantly and form p Synergy -n heterojunctions through seamless contact with n-Si. The PEDOT:PSS-CNT composite film exhibits a much lower sheet resistance and remains high optical transmittance. Once the photo-generated holes are extracted to the PEDOT:PSS-CNT composite film, CNT network can serve as a carrier transport bridge, which is different from the design that inserts an ultrathin polymer between the CNT and Si. Incorporation of the continuous CNT network with PEDOT:PSS jointly in the as-designed simple and explicit structure has generated synergistic effects, which can make full use of the respective merits and then considerably enhance the PCE of hybrid PEDOT:PSS-CNT/n-Si solar cells.

Single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) films are promising materials for transparent conductive films (TCFs) with potential applications in flexible displays, touch screens, solar cells and solid-state lighting1,2. However, further reductions in resistivity and in cost of SWCNT films are necessary for high quality TCF products3. Here, we report an improved floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition method to directly and continuously produce ultrathin and freestanding SWCNT films at the hundred meter-scale. Both carbon conversion efficiency and SWCNT TCF yield are increased by three orders of magnitude relative to the conventional floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition. After doping, the film manifests a sheet resistance of 40 ohm/sq. at 90% transmittance, representing record performance for large-scale SWCNT films. Our work provides a new avenue to accelerate the industrialization of SWCNT films as TCFs.

An all-carbon pressure sensor is designed and fabricated based on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanomaterials. By sandwiching one layer of superelastic rGO aerogel between two freestanding high-conductive rGO thin papers, the sensor works based on the contact resistance at the aerogel-paper interfaces, getting rid of the alien materials such as polymers and metals adopted in traditional sensors. Constrained by the large mode loss, it is a challenge to achieve low threshold lasing in a thin nanowire whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) cavity at room temperature (RT). Here, we demonstrate low threshold single-mode polariton lasing at RT in a thin ZnO nanowire (165 nm in diameter) on Al2O3 layer/rough Ag film. Such a structure can compensate the whispering-gallery mode loss and enhance the WGM polariton emission in UV region for subwavelength ZnO nanowires. They are attributed to the strong local electromagnetic field near nanowire induced by Ag film. The polariton lasing is confirmed by the low threshold, narrowing of the linewidth at threshold, nonlinear intensity-power dependence and continous blueshift of the emission. A clear transition from strong coupling regime to weak coupling regime is observed with increasing pump power. This work suggests low-cost and high-performance room-temperature nanolasers or polariton devices achieved in single thin ZnO nanowires.

Recent development in epidermal and bionic electronics systems has promoted the increasing demand for supercapcacitors with micrometer-thickness and good compatibility. Here, a highly flexible free-standing epidermal supercapacitor (SC-E) with merely 1 μm thickness and high performance is developed. Single-walled carbon nanotube/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) hybrid films with unique inner-connected reticulation are adopted as electrodes for ultrathin structure and high electric conductivity. Then, based on two substrates with different surface energies, a stepwise lift-off method is presented to peel off the ultrathin integrated supercapacitor from the substrates nondestructively. As a result of the high conductive hybrid electrodes and the thin electrolyte layer, the as-designed supercapacitors (based on the total mass of two electrodes) achieve a good capacitance of 56 F g−1 and a superhigh power density of 332 kW kg−1, which manifest superior performance in contrast to the other devices fabricated by traditional electrodes. Meanwhile, the ultrashort response time of 11.5 ms enables the epidermal supercapacitor (SC-E) work for high-power units. More importantly, the free-standing structure and outstanding flexibility (105 times bending) endow the SC-E with excellent compatibility to be integrated and work in the next generation of smart and epidermal systems.

The flexible zinc ion battery (ZIB) is deemed to be a promising candidate for flexible power supply due to its high security and low cost. However, conventional segregated battery configuration inevitably suffers from the relative displacement or detachment between two neighboring components at bending strain, which seriously degrade the performance of a flexible battery. Moreover, stubborn Zn dendrite drastically shortens the cycle life. Herein, by integrating Zn anode, zinc protective coating, polyamide separator and cathode into a single matrix, referred as the integrated electrode, a long cycle life and robust flexibility for ZIB in aqueous electrolyte are achieved. Seamless connection with the adjacent layers not only avoids the relative displacement or detachment caused by bending strain, but enhances the interfacial contact to promote the electrochemical kinetics. The built-in protective coating in the integrated configuration significantly inhibits the dendrites and side reactions for extending the durability. Furthermore, the integrated configuration makes the whole battery lighter, thinner and more powerful. Therefore, this work provides a new design idea for engineering innovative battery configuration and enables high performances for a flexible ZIB. Meanwhile, the research results would deliver great potential applications in flexible electronics and boost the development of configuration of energy storage devices.

The presence of grain boundaries and defects in perovskite films can be detrimental to performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), such as leading to nonradiative recombination and environmental instability. Additive engineering is a key tactic to control crystal growth and passivate defects of perovskite film. In this work, lead-free alkali metal additive of potassium selenocyanate (KSeCN) was firstly added in precursor solution to prepare a novel perovskite of CH3NH3PbI3-x(SeCN)x. The SeCN− is substitute for I− to enhance structure stability, simultaneously facilitate nucleation, meanwhile, effectively increase crystalline grain size and passivate the defects. Finally, the power conversion efficiency of planar perovskite solar cells boosts from 14.34% to 18.41%, and the hysteresis reduces from 21% to 1.5%, nearly negligible. Our findings provide an avenue for crystalline regulation and defects passivation to further improve the performance of perovskite solar cells and propose a promising CH3NH3PbI3-x(SeCN)x-based perovskite.

Tin dioxide (SnO2) is a promising electron transport material to replace traditional titanium dioxide (TiO2) for fabricating efficient planar perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, in order to realize process compatibility and larger scale device, low temperature solution processed SnO2 is normally used, which generates numerous trap states in ETL layer and directly affects the device performance. Here, an interfacial modification strategy proposed, depositing an ultrasonic atomized ultrathin graphene quantum dots (GQDs) layer between tin dioxide (SnO2) and perovskite layer. Ultrasonic atomized deposition can effectively prevent the damage of the surface chemical properties of SnO2 by aqueous solution. Additionally, we demonstrate that the GQDs change the surface property of SnO2 film, and optimized the charge transport capability in SnO2 and perovskite interface. Correspondingly, we obtained a significant power conversion efficiency (PCE) improvement for CH3NH3PbI3-based PSCs from 13.61% to 16.54% and reached a highest steady-state PCE over 16%. We believe that the interfacial modification engineering by means of ultrasonic atomizing process is a promising tactic to obtain efficient perovskite solar cells.
