There are 0.27% WO3 in a scheelite Ore. The grade of scheelite concentrate produced on site is 53.11%. Because the grade of the concentrate is low, the pricing coefficient of the concentrate is low. In order to improve the grade of scheelite concentrate, according to the properties of the ore, combined collector was used for flotation at room temperature, sodium sulfide was used as an auxiliary inhibitor at heating flotation. After the flotation reagent is optimized, the grade of scheelite concentrate can be significantly increased to 66.18%, the recovery rate of the concentrate remains basically unchanged，and the dosage of inhibitor sodium silicate is significantly reduced. The technical and economic effects of the optimized process are significantly improved.

BackgroundObesity could compromise people’s health and elevate the risk of numerous severe chronic conditions and premature mortality. Young adults are at high risk of adopting unhealthy lifestyles related to overweight and obesity, as they are at a phase marked by several significant life milestones that have been linked to weight gain. They gain weight rapidly and excess adiposity mostly accrues, compared with middle-aged and older adults when weight stabilizes or even decreases. Virtual reality exergames have the potential to increase physical activity in people’s daily lives. However, the factors that influence young adults’ preference for using virtual reality exergames for weight control remain unclear. ObjectiveThe objective of this study is to identify, characterize, and explain the factors influencing young adults' preference for weight control using virtual reality exergames. MethodsThis qualitative study used semistructured interviews. In total, 4 focus group interviews were conducted with 23 young adults aged between 18 and 25 years. The qualitative data were analyzed using the Colaizzi phenomenological methodology. ResultsIn total, 3 major factors were found to influence young adults’ preference for virtual reality exergames in weight control settings: individual factors, social or environmental factors, and expectations of virtual reality exergames. Individual factors included experience with previous weight control methods, previous experience with virtual reality, psychological status, attitudes toward personal BMI, preference for exercise type, and acceptance of virtual reality exergames. Social or environmental factors included social definitions of beauty, weather or public health events, and knowledge of virtual reality provided. Expectations of virtual reality exergames included cost of the device, the fun of virtual reality exergames, supervision, modality of virtual reality exergames, feedback after exercise, convenience to use, and weight loss effect. ConclusionsYoung adults take various factors into account when deciding whether to use virtual reality exergames for weight control. These factors can inform the development and further refinement of devices, guides, and policies related to virtual reality exergames for controlling weight.

Knee Osteoarthritis (KOA) is characterized by phenotypic alterations, apoptosis, and the breakdown of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in the superficial articular cartilage cells. The inflammatory response activates the Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress (ERS) signaling pathway, which plays a critical role in the pathophysiology and progression of KOA. Chondrocytes stimulated by thapsigargin(TG)exhibit heightened ERS and significantly increase the expression of ERS-associated proteins. Key mediators of ERS-induced apoptosis include X-box-binding protein 1(XBP1), elevated levels of the protein transport protein Sec61 subunit (SEC61), and C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP).While the precise mechanism of action of Guilu Erxian Glue (GEG), a medication commonly used in the clinical treatment of KOA, remains to be fully elucidated, our research has shown that GEG mitigates the imbalance between ECM synthesis and degradation, as well as chondrocyte apoptosis resulting from ERS. This effect is likely achieved through the suppression of the Activating Transcription Factor 6 (ATF6)/Glucose-Regulatory Protein 78 (GRP78)/CHOP signaling pathway.In summary,our research results indicate that GEG can activate the ATF6/GRP78/CHOP signaling pathway to restore endoplasmic reticulum (ER) homeostasis in chondrocytes, thereby reducing chondrocyte apoptosis and ultimately promoting the balance between ECM synthesis and degradation.

Objective To determine the reference red blood cells with weak agglutination intensity of low positive quality control products by comparing RhD antigen expression intensity difference according to the serological results. Methods The RhD(+ ) red blood cells were detected by microcolumn gel method with 1 500 times diluted anti-D typing reagent. The samples with weak and strong RhD antigen expression intensity were selected as the reference red blood cells for weak agglutination intensity of low positive quality control products, and verification was performed. Results Ten RhD(+ ) red blood cells were detected with diluted anti-D typing reagent, of which 8 were 1+ and 2 were ±. Red blood cells with agglutination intensity of 1+ were used as the benchmark to determine the maximum dilution ratio of anti-D typing reagent when their agglutination intensity was 1+. As the preparation standard of low positive quality control products, the agglutination intensity of red blood cells with low RhD antigen expression intensity was extremely weak ±, which was difficult to ensure the stability of its control limit properties. Based on red blood cells with agglutination intensity of ±, the maximum dilution ratio of anti-D typing reagent with agglutination intensity of 1+ was re-determined as the preparation standard of low positive quality control products, and the results met the requirements of quality control product setting. Conclusion Using red blood cells with low RhD antigen expression intensity as the benchmark to set the weak agglutination intensity of the low positive quality control products can avoid the loss of control due to the low target value.

Objective To monitor the effectiveness and accuracy of the blood transfusion compatibility test system by self-made weakly positive internal quality control products. Methods Red blood cells from DAT(-) healthy subjects were selected, and B/RhD(-)E(-) red blood cells were selected as tube 1. A/RhD(+ )E(+ ) was selected as tube 2 to prepare blood group quality control products according to the principle of blood group antigen compatibility, and red blood cell preservation solution and corresponding ABO blood group reagent antibody were added to make the agglutination intensity of microcolumn gel method in reverse blood typing reach a low positive value (1+ ). Tube 3 and tube 4 were prepared with five different preservation media: plasma, serum, antibody diluent, mixture of equal plasma and antibody diluent, and mixture of equal serum and antibody diluent, respectively. IgM anti-E antibody was added to tube 3, and IgG anti-D antibody was added to tube 4, so that the agglutination intensity of microcolumn gel method reached a low positive value (1+ ). To satisfy the ever-growing demands for high energy density electrical vehicles and large-scale energy storage systems, thick electrode has been proposed and proven to be an effective way to achieve high energy density. However, the electrochemical performance of thick electrode is hindered by inferior mechanical stabilities, poor charge transport kinetics, severe lithiation heterogeneities and anabatic thermal risks, which block its step to commercialization. Herein, we reviewed the crucial issues arising in thick electrode, and provided latest insights into theoretical modeling and experimental design for next-generation LIBs electrodes by a combination of existing design methods and multiscale models. Then, we summarized recent advances in emerging architecture designs of thick electrodes for high-performance LIBs. Moreover, some in-depth underlying issues associated with thick electrode and possible solutions were taken into account.

Abstract The interphase genome is dynamically organized in the nucleus and decorated with chromatin-associated RNA (caRNA). It remains unclear whether the genome architecture modulates the spatial distribution of caRNA and vice versa. Here, we generate a resource of genome-wide RNA-DNA and DNA-DNA contact maps in human cells. These maps reveal the chromosomal domains demarcated by locally transcribed RNA, hereafter termed RNA-defined chromosomal domains. Further, the spreading of caRNA is constrained by the boundaries of topologically associating domains (TADs), demonstrating the role of the 3D genome structure in modulating the spatial distribution of RNA. Conversely, stopping transcription or acute depletion of RNA induces thousands of chromatin loops genome-wide. Activation or suppression of the transcription of specific genes suppresses or creates chromatin loops straddling these genes. Deletion of a specific caRNA-producing genomic sequence promotes chromatin loops that straddle the interchromosomal target sequences of this caRNA. These data suggest a feedback loop where the 3D genome modulates the spatial distribution of RNA, which in turn affects the dynamic 3D genome organization.

The present study investigated the effects of dietary Cr on growth performance, antioxidant capacity, immunity response, insulin signaling pathway, and glucose-lipid metabolism in juvenile oriental river prawns (Macrobrachium nipponense). Moreover, the study also evaluated the optimal dietary Cr required for supplementation in juvenile oriental river prawns. Five semi-purified experimental diets were prepared by adding 0, 0.3, 0.6, 1.2 and 2.4 mg Cr kg−1 diet to a basal diet resulting into 0.74, 1.07, 1.35, 1.87 and 2.51 mg Cr kg−1 diets, respectively. Abstract Background Next-generation sequencing (NGS) is maturely applied for gene fusion detection. Although tumor fusion burden (TFB) has been identified as an immune marker for cancer, the relationship between these fusions and the immunogenicity and molecular characteristics of gastric cancer (GC) patients remains unclear. GCs have different clinical significance depending on their subtypes, and thus, this study aimed to investigate the characteristics and clinical relevance of TFB in non-Epstein–Barr-virus-positive (EBV+) GC with microsatellite stability (MSS). Methods A total of 319 GC patients from The Cancer Genome Atlas stomach adenocarcinoma (TCGA-STAD) and a cohort of 45-case from ENA (PRJEB25780) were included. The cohort characteristics and distribution of TFB among the patients were analyzed. Additionally, the correlations of TFB with mutation characteristics, pathway differences, relative abundance of immune cells, and prognosis were examined in the TCGA-STAD cohort of MSS and non-EBV (+) patients. Results We observed that in the MSS and non-EBV (+) cohort, the TFB-low group exhibited significantly lower gene mutation frequency, gene copy number, loss of heterozygosity score, and tumor mutation burden than in the TFB-high group. Additionally, the TFB-low group exhibited a higher abundance of immune cells. Furthermore, the immune gene signatures were significantly upregulated in the TFB-low group, 2-year disease-specific survival was markedly increased in the TFB-low group compared with to the TFB-high group. The rates of TFB-low cases were significantly higher TFB-than high cases in durable clinical benefit (DCB) and response groups with pembrolizumab treatment. Low TFB may serve as a predictor of GC prognosis, and the TFB-low group exhibits higher immunogenicity. Conclusion In conclusion, this study reveals that the TFB-based classification of GC patient may be instructive for individualized immunotherapy regimens.

Abstract Background Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is an economically important pathogen, characterized by its genetic and antigenic variation. The PRRSV vaccine is widely used, however, the unsatisfied heterologic protection and the risk of reverse virulence raise the requirement to find some new anti-PRRSV strategies for disease control. Tylvalosin tartrate is used to inhibit PRRSV in the field non-specifically, however, the mechanism is still less known. Methods The antiviral effects of Tylvalosin tartrates from three producers were evaluated in a cell inoculation model. Their safety and efficacy concentrations, and effecting stage during PRRSV infection were analyzed. And, the Tylvalosin tartrates regulated genes and pathways which are potentially related to the anti-viral effect were further explored by using transcriptomics analysis. Last, the transcription level of six anti-virus-related DEGs was selected to confirm by qPCR, and the expression level of HMOX1, a reported anti-PRRSV gene, was proved by western blot. Results The safety concentrations of Tylvalosin tartrates from three different producers were 40 µg/mL (Tyl A, Tyl B, and Tyl C) in MARC-145 cells and 20 µg/mL (Tyl A) or 40 µg/mL (Tyl B and Tyl C) in primary pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAMs) respectively. Tylvalosin tartrate can inhibit PRRSV proliferation in a dose-dependent manner, causing more than 90% proliferation reduction at 40 µg/mL. But it shows no virucidal effect, and only achieves the antiviral effect via long-term action on the cells during the PRRSV proliferation. Furthermore, GO terms and KEGG pathway analysis was carried out based on the RNA sequencing and transcriptomic data. It was found that the Tylvalosin tartrates can regulate the signal transduction, proteolysis, and oxidation-reduction process, as well as some pathways such as protein digestion and absorption, PI3K-Akt signaling, FoxO signaling, and Ferroptosis pathways, which might relate to PRRSV proliferation or host innate immune response, but further studies still need to confirm it. Among them, six antivirus-related genes HMOX1, ATF3, FTH1, FTL, NR4A1, and CDKN1A were identified to be regulated by Tylvalosin tartrate, and the increased expression level of HMOX1 was further confirmed by western blot. Conclusions Tylvalosin tartrate can inhibit PRRSV proliferation in vitro in a dose-dependent manner. The identified DEGs and pathways in transcriptomic data will provide valuable clues for further exploring the host cell restriction factors or anti-PRRSV target.

Abstract Purpose Recent studies have revealed an increase in the incidence rate of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease-related hepatocellular carcinoma (NAFLD-HCC). Furthermore, the association of Sphingosine 1-phosphate receptor 2 (S1PR2) with various types of tumours is identified, and the metabolism of conjugated bile acids (CBAs) performs an essential function in the onset and development of HCC. However, the association of CBA and S1PR2 with NAFLD-HCC is unclear. Methods The relationship between the expression of S1PR2 and the prognosis of patients suffering from NAFLD-HCC was investigated by bioinformatics techniques. Subsequently, the relationship between S1PR2 and the biological behaviours of HCC cell lines Huh 7 and HepG2 was explored by conducting molecular biology assays. Additionally, several in vivo animal experiments were carried out for the elucidation of the biological impacts of S1PR2 inhibitors on HCC cells. Finally, We used Glycodeoxycholic acid (GCDA) of CBA to explore the biological effects of CBA on HCC cell and its potential mechanism. Results High S1PR2 expression was linked to poor prognosis of the NAFLD-HCC patients. According to cellular assay results, S1PR2 expression could affect the proliferation, invasion, migration, and apoptosis of Huh 7 and HepG2 cells, and was closely associated with the G1/G2 phase of the cell cycle. The experiments conducted in the In vivo conditions revealed that the overexpression of S1PR2 accelerated the growth of subcutaneous tumours. In addition, JTE-013, an antagonist of S1PR2, effectively inhibited the migration and proliferation of HCC cells. Furthermore, the bioinformatics analysis highlighted a correlation between S1PR2 and the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway. GCDA administration further enhanced the expression levels of p-AKT, p-mTOR, VEGF, SGK1, and PKCα. Moreover, both the presence and absence of GCDA did not reveal any significant change in the levels of S1PR2, p-AKT, p-mTOR, VEGF, SGK1, and PKCα proteins under S1PR2 knockdown, indicating that CBA may regulates the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway by mediating S1PR2 expression. Conclusion S1PR2 is a potential prognostic biomarker in NAFLD-HCC. In addition, We used GCDA in CBAs to treat HCC cell and found that the expression of S1PR2 was significantly increased, and the expression of PI3K/AKT/mTOR signalling pathway-related signal molecules was also significantly enhanced, indicating that GCDA may activate PI3K/AKT/mTOR signalling pathway by up-regulating the expression of S1PR2, and finally affect the activity of hepatocellular carcinoma cells. S1PR2 can be a candidate therapeutic target for NAFLD-HCC. Collectively, the findings of this research offer novel perspectives on the prevention and treatment of NAFLD-HCC.

A low-grade gold-copper mixed ore in Fujian contains Au 0.36 g/t, Cu 0.29%, Ag 7.4 g/t, S 4.02%. If it is directly cyanidized, copper enters the gold cyanide leaching system, not only cannot be recovered, It will also worsen the gold selection index and increase production costs.For this low-grade gold-copper mixed ore, a combined flotation and cyanidation process is used for sorting. The flotation operation investigated the influence of the fineness of ore grinding, the amount of lime, the type of collector, and the type of dispersant on the flotation index.The results show that the flotation effect is the best when the grinding fineness is -0.074 mm 60%, the amount of lime is 1500 g/t, when Z-200 is used as a collector, and when water glass is used as a dispersant. The ore contains Au 16.74 g/t, Cu 20.21%, and the gold and copper recovery rates are 61.90% and 87.09%, respectively.The flotation tailings were leached by cyanidation, and the influence of sodium cyanide concentration and cyanidation time on the gold leaching rate was investigated. The results showed that the gold leaching rate was 71.26% after leaching at the initial concentration of sodium cyanide 300 mg/L for 24 hours. The recovery rate of Au in the whole process reached 89.05%, and the recovery rate of Cu reached 87.09%, finally achieving the goal of comprehensive and efficient recovery of gold and copper in the ore, providing technical support for the development of such resources.

Abstract Snow pears are an important and widespread agricultural product that can relieve respiratory symptoms, constipation, and alcoholism. Lignin content (LC) has a direct and negative role on the fruit texture and taste of snow pears. Here, we studied the effect on the near‐infrared (NIR) spectroscopy determination of the LC in snow pears due to the position at which spectral measurements were obtained. NIR diffuse reflection spectra were collected from nine measurement positions on each sample by a portable NIR spectrometer. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) was used to develop spectrum compensation models of the LC for three local spectrum models, an average spectrum model, and a global spectrum model. The results indicated that the prediction accuracy of the LC was affected by the spectral measurement position. Compared with the local spectrum models and the global spectrum model, the average spectrum model had good prediction results. Next, synergy interval partial least squares, bootstrapping soft shrinkage, competitive adaptive reweighted sampling, genetic algorithm, and an improved variable stability and frequency analysis algorithm (VSFAA) method were used to select the most effective variables to build the PLSR model. The average spectrum calibration model established using the 10 effective variables selected by VSFAA reduced the influence of the variation of the spectral measurement position for LC prediction and achieved more promising results, with the correlation coefficient of calibration and prediction of 0.842 and 0.824, respectively. The root mean square error of cross‐validation and prediction were 0.736 and 0.694, respectively. The overall results showed that the average spectrum model based on the nine spectral measurement positions reduced the sensitivity to the variation of spectral measurement position for predicting the LC and combined the VSFAA variable selection algorithm to improve the accuracy and provide a robust model for prediction of LC in snow pears. Compared with the local spectrum position models and the global spectrum position model, the average spectrum position model combining the nine measurement positions (three stem‐calyx longitudes intersected three latitudes (stem, equator, calyx)) produced good prediction results and reduced the sensitivity to the variation of the spectral measurement position. The effective wavelengths (SNV‐VSFAA‐PLSR)‐average spectrum position model achieved good results, reducing the influence of the variation of the spectral measurement position for LC prediction, and the effective wavelengths selected from the average spectrum position model were helpful for offsetting the influence of the variation of spectral measurement position on the PLSR models based on the spectrum from the equatorial positions alone.

Snow pear is very popular in southwest China thanks to its fruit texture and potential medicinal value. Lignin content (LC) plays a direct and negative role (higher concentration and larger size of stone cells lead to thicker pulp and deterioration of the taste) in determining the fruit texture of snow pears as well as consumer purchasing decisions of fresh pears. In this study, we assessed the robustness of a calibration model for predicting LC in different batches of snow pears using a portable near-infrared (NIR) spectrometer, with the range of 1033–2300 nm. The average NIR spectra at nine different measurement positions of snow pear samples purchased at four different periods (batch A, B, C and D) were collected. We developed a standard normal variate transformation (SNV)-genetic algorithm (GA) -the partial least square regression (PLSR) model (master model A) - to predict LC in batch A of snow pear samples based on 80 selected effective wavelengths, with a higher correlation coefficient of prediction set (Rp) of 0.854 and a lower root mean square error of prediction set (RMSEP) of 0.624, which we used as the prediction model to detect LC in three other batches of snow pear samples. The performance of detecting the LC of batch B, C, and D samples by the master model A directly was poor, with lower Rp and higher RMSEP. The independent semi-supervision free parameter model enhancement (SS-FPME) method and the sequential SS-FPME method were used and compared to update master model A to predict the LC of snow pears. For the batch B samples, the predictive ability of the updated model (Ind-model AB) was improved, with an Rp of 0.837 and an RMSEP of 0.614. For the batch C samples, the performance of the Seq-model ABC was improved greatly, with an Rp of 0.952 and an RMSEP of 0.383. For the batch D samples, the performance of the Seq-model ABCD was also improved, with an Rp of 0.831 and an RMSEP of 0.309. Therefore, the updated model based on supervision and learning of new batch samples by the sequential SS-FPME method could improve the robustness and migration ability of the model used to detect the LC of snow pears and provide technical support for the development and practical application of portable detection device.

Abstract This paper studies the traveling waves in a nonlocal dispersal SIR epidemic model with nonlinear incidence and distributed latent delay. It is found that the traveling waves connecting the disease-free equilibrium with endemic equilibrium are determined by the basic reproduction number R 0 $\mathcal{R}_{0}$ and the minimal wave speed c ∗ $c^{*}$ . When R 0 > 1 $\mathcal{R}_{0}>1$ and c > c ∗ $c>c^{*}$ , the existence of traveling waves is established by using the upper-lower solutions, auxiliary system, constructing the solution map, and then the fixed point theorem, limiting argument, diagonal extraction method, and Lyapunov functions. When R 0 > 1 $\mathcal{R}_{0}>1$ and 0 < c < c ∗ $0< c< c^{*}$ , the nonexistence result is also obtained by using the reduction to absurdity and the theory of asymptotic spreading.

Objective Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounts for approximately 80% of all lung cancers, but its pathogenesis has not been fully elucidated. Therefore, it is valuable to explore the pathogenesis of NSCLC to improve diagnosis and identify novel treatment biomarkers. Methods Circular (circ)RNA, micro (mi)RNA, and gene expression datasets of NSCLC were analyzed to identify those that were differentially expressed between tumor and healthy tissues. Common genes were found and pathway enrichment analyses were performed. Survival analysis was used to identify hub genes, and their level of methylation and association with immune cell infiltration were analyzed. Finally, an NSCLC circRNA–miRNA–mRNA network was constructed. Results Eight miRNAs and 211 common genes were identified. Gene ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analyses revealed that cell projection morphogenesis, blood vessel morphogenesis, muscle cell proliferation, and synapse organization were enriched. Ten hub genes were found, of which the expression of DTL and RRM2 was significantly related to NSCLC patient prognosis. Significant methylation changes and immune cell infiltration correlations with DTL and RRM2 were also detected. Conclusions hsa_circ_0001947/hsa-miR-637/RRM2 and hsa_circ_0072305/hsa-miR-127-5p/DTL networks were constructed, and identified molecules may be involved in the occurrence and development of NSCLC.

The porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), especially the highly pathogenic strains, can cause serious acute lung injury (ALI), characterized by extensive hemorrhage, inflammatory cells and serous fluid infiltration in the lung vascular system. Meanwhile, the pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (PMVECs) are essential for forming the air–blood barrier and keeping the water–salt balance to prevent leakage of circulating nutrients, solutes, and fluid into the underlying tissues. As well, they tightly regulate the influx of immune cells. To determine the possible relationship between the PMVECs’ function changes and lung vascular permeability during PRRSV infection, the PMVECs were co-cultured with HP-PRRSV-inoculated primary pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAMs) in transwell model, and then the RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) and comprehensive bioinformatics analysis were carried out to characterize the dynamic transcriptome landscapes of PMVECs. In total, 16,489 annotated genes were identified, with 275 upregulated and 270 downregulated differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were characterized at both 18 and 24 h post PRRSV inoculation. The GO terms and KEGG pathways analysis indicated that the immune response, metabolic pathways, cell death, cytokine–cytokine receptor interaction, viral responses, and apoptotic process are significantly regulated upon co-culture with PRRSV-infected PAMs. Moreover, according to the TERR and dextran flux assay results, dysregulation of TJ proteins, including CLDN1, CLDN4, CLDN8, and OCLN, is further confirmed to correlate with the increased permeability of PMVECs. These transcriptome profiles and DEGs will provide valuable clues for further exploring the roles of PMVECs in PRRSV-induced ALI in the future.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is economically important and characterized by its extensive variation. The codon usage patterns and their influence on viral evolution and host adaptation among different PRRSV strains remain largely unknown. Here, the codon usage of ORF5 genes from lineages 1, 3, 5, and 8, and MLV strains of type 2 PRRSV in China was analyzed. A compositional property analysis of ORF5 genes revealed that nucleotide C is most frequently used at the third position of codons, accompanied by rich GC3s. The effective number of codon (ENC) and codon pair bias (CPB) values indicate that all ORF5 genes have low codon bias and the differences in CPB scores among four lineages are almost not significant. When compared with host codon usage patterns, lineage 1 strains show higher CAI and SiD values, with a high similarity to pig, which might relate to its predominant epidemic propensity in the field. The CAI, RCDI, and SiD values of ORF5 genes from different passages of MLV JXA1R indicate no relation between attenuation and CPB or codon adaptation decrease during serial passage on non-host cells. These findings provide a novel way of understanding the PRRSV’s evolution, related to viral survival, host adaptation, and virulence.

Docetaxel, a lipophilic drug, is indicated for castration-resistant metastatic prostate cancer. Most men with such disease would have had androgen-deprivation therapy, which decreases muscle and increases body fat. Obesity and body composition changes may influence the outcomes of docetaxel therapy.We conducted a retrospective review of 333 patients with metastatic prostate cancer treated with docetaxel at a comprehensive cancer center between October 7, 2004 and December 31, 2012. Body composition parameters were measured based on the areas of muscle and adipose tissues in the visceral and subcutaneous compartments on CT images at L3-4 levels. Dose calculations, toxicity and adverse reaction profiles, and overall survival were analyzed.Obese patients were younger at the diagnosis of prostate cancer and had a shorter duration from diagnosis to docetaxel therapy. Analysis of body composition found that a high visceral fat-to-subcutaneous fat area ratio (VSR) was associated with poor prognosis but a high visceral fat-to-muscle area ratio (VMR) and high body mass index were associated with increased duration from starting docetaxel to death, allowing such men to catch up with patients with normal body mass index in overall survival from cancer diagnosis to death. Cox proportional hazard regression showed that age ≥65 years, high VSR, abnormal serum alkaline phosphatase, and >10% reduction of initial dosage were significant predictors of shorter time between starting docetaxel and death, and that high VMR, obesity, and weekly regimens were significant predictors of longer survival after docetaxel.Obese and overweight patients may benefit more from weekly docetaxel regimens using the reference dosage of 35 mg/m2 without empirical dosage reduction.

A toxin producing phytoplankton-zooplankton model with inhibitory exponential substrate and time delay has been formulated and analyzed. Since the liberation of toxic substances by phytoplankton species is not an instantaneous process but is mediated by some time lag required for maturity of the species and the zooplankton mortality due to the toxic phytoplankton bloom occurs after some time laps of the bloom of toxic phytoplankton, we induced a discrete time delay to both of the consume response function and distribution of toxic substance term. Furthermore, based on the fact that the predation rate decreases at large toxic-phytoplankton density, the system is modelled via a Tissiet type functional response. We study the dynamical behaviour and investigate the conditions to guarantee the coexistence of two species. Analytical methods and numerical simulations are used to obtain information about the qualitative behaviour of the models.

Most clinical studies of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia have not included cancer patients who have high risk of thromboembolism, frequent exposure to heparin, and many potential causes of thrombocytopenia other than heparin-induced thrombocytopenia. To estimate the incidence and prevalence of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia in cancer patients, we identified cases based on diagnostic codes, anti-heparin antibody testing, and clinical characteristics (4T score) at a comprehensive cancer center between 1 October 2008 and 31 December 2011. We estimated that the prevalence of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia to be 0.02% among all cancer patients and 0.24% among cancer patients exposed to heparin. The annual incidence of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia was 0.57 cases per 1000 cancer patients exposed to heparin. Of the 40 cancer patients with the International Classification of Diseases (Ninth Revision; ICD-9) code for heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, positive anti-heparin antibody, and 4T score ≥4, 5 (12.5%) died of related thromboembolic or hemorrhagic complications. In a multivariate logistic regression model, male gender was a significant ( p = 0.035) factor, and non-hematological malignancy was a significant ( p = 0.017) factor associated with anti-heparin antibody positivity. Future studies may further examine the risk factors associated with heparin-induced thrombocytopenia in larger cohorts.
