Abstract

The title compounds 2,2‐ethano‐1‐methylene and 1,1‐ethano‐2‐methylene‐1,2,3,4‐tetrahydronaphthalene (13and 14respectively) were synthesized by the Wittig reaction from the corresponding ethano‐tetralones (16) and (19) which were, in turn, prepared from the respective α‐ and β‐tetralones (15) and (18). It is shown that the reaction of (13) with TCNE at 0° yields the corresponding [2 + 2] cycloaddition adduct (20), isomerizing thermally to the formal [2 + 5] cycloaddition adduct (21). Compound (13) reacts with N‐tosylisocyanate (TIC) and with N‐phenylsulfonylisocyanate (PSI) to a 4:1‐isomeric mixture of (Z)‐ and (E)‐acryloamides (24) and (26), respectively. The reaction of (14) with TCNE at 0° leads to the [2 + 5] cycloadduct (30), while with (TIC) and (PSI) the corresponding tricyclic adducts (28a) and (28b) result. Bromination of (16) with NBS yielded the respective 4‐bromo‐2,2‐ethano‐1‐tetralone (31) which gave, upon dehydrobromination with the aid of DBU, the naphtho‐dihydrofurane derivative (34). The latter was formed most likely via facile cyclopropylketone upon dihydrofurane rearrangement of an initially formed 2,2‐ethano‐1‐oxo‐1,2‐dihydronaphthalene (32) which was desired for the formation of (33). Structures of all new compounds were assigned on basis of analytical and spectroscopic data (IR, UV, mass spectra, 1H‐NMR).

Abstract

Introduction: Famine, with its pathological consequences was, apart from climacteric events, used by various dictatorships as a weapon for genocide, This was the case of Nazi Germany using food confiscation from occupied populations, affecting, in particular, the incarcerated Jews, Although food production in the 20th century was sufficient for the global population, World War II lead to a wide range of famine in Europe. The condition resulting from starvation led, in the survivors, to a multi-system Shoah syndrome, with propensity to generational inheritance.

Abstract

The effects of short-term moderate beer consumption (MBC) on plasma circulating fibrinogen (PCF) in patients suffering from coronary atherosclerosis were investigated by use of 2-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE), circular dichroism (CD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Forty-eight volunteers after coronary bypass surgery were divided into experimental (EG) and control (CG) groups, each of 24. Patients of the EG group consumed 330 mL of beer/day (about 20 g of alcohol) for 30 consecutive days, and CG volunteers drank mineral water instead of beer. Blood samples were collected before and after the experiment. In 21 out of 24 patients after beer consumption the plasma circulating fibrinogen was compromised: changes in its secondary structure were found. These changes were expressed in relatively low electrophoretic mobility and charge heterogeneity, decrease in alpha-helix and increase in beta-sheet, and in slight shift of amide I and II bands. Our findings indicate that one of the positive benefits of moderate beer consumption is to diminish the production of fibrinogen and its stability, which reduces the potential risk exerted by this protein. Thus, in most of beer-consuming patients some qualitative structural changes in plasma circulating fibrinogen were detected.
