9. A Psychosocial Study of Political Followership: The Case of the Young Corbynites

Abstract

This article presents a new Psychosocial approach to the concept of political followership by focusing on the appeal for young people of UK Labour Leader, Jeremy Corbyn during the 2015 Labour Leadership contest. Whilst there is an established field of political leadership studies, the psychosocial dynamics of political followership has received less attention. We argue that in the current era of rapid change and of social, economic and political crises, there is a need to develop a nuanced understanding of the affective turn in political engagement within social democratic countries. We trace the emergence of a new interest in political followership and present an innovative psychosocial perspective that draws on relational psychoanalysis to explore the psychosocial complexity of the relationship between follower and leader and the unconscious dynamics that underpin it. Drawing on the findings of focus group interviews into political followership, the article elaborates on these ideas through their application to the analysis of UK Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn and his appeal for young followers who joined the party because his political image, ethos and values chimed in with the post-materialistic ethos of the younger generation.

13. Particle density and the plummet balance

Abstract

Soil suspensions are usually characterised by the percentage weights of particles settling with velocities between defined limits, such as silt and clay. If percentages were measured sufficiently accurately by both the pipette method and a plummet balance, dry densities of fractions could be calculated and hence their composition inferred. The accuracy and precision of the pipette method were confirmed by the mass balance of panicles in peptised suspensions of a red-brown earth subsoil and a kaolinite. Percentages indicated by a plummet balance were corrected for the actual densities of fractions measured separately. Residual differences from the pipette values showed that the balance was accurate but lacked the precision needed to deduce densities to 0.01 mg/[mm.sup.3]. Values of the density of clay fractions were deduced from the means of published percentages obtained by the two methods where replicate suspensions were used and also from the mean difference based on a comparison using 199 soil samples. For the latter, an underestimate of clay percentages indicated by the balance had first to be allowed for. Clay-deduced densities were in the range 2.80-2.83 mg/[mm.sup.3], compared with 2.84 mg/[mm.sup.3] measured on the separated subsoil clay. The values are similar, probably because the clays are derived from mica. The density of the separated subsoil silt was 2.64 mg/[mm.sup.3], less than quartz, because of the presence of feldspar. Such results indicate the potential use of the method if the precision of the balance is improved. Abstract

National audience; L'effet de la teneur en protéines de l'aliment (T=147 vs HP=180g MAT/Kg) a été étudié sur la qualité de la carcasse et de la viande de lapins, nourris à volonté (ad lib.=100%) ou rationnés (R=75% de l'ad libitum) pendant 4 semaines à partir du sevrage (35j). La restriction alimentaire a réduit le rendement à l'abattage (-1.4 pt) et l'adiposité globale de la carcasse (note d'engraissement : -0.6 pt, gras interscapulaire : -27%, périrénal : -37%). La viande des lapins restreints présentait un pH ultime supérieur pour le râble (+0.3 pt). Les indicateurs de coloration de la viande (L*a*b*) ont révélé une viande plus pâle chez les lapins soumis au rationnement, tant au niveau du Biceps Femoris (Luminance : +0.87 pt et indice de rouge : -0.97 pt) que du râble (indice rouge : -0.68 pt et indice de jaune : -0.53pt). L'élévation du taux protéique de l'aliment a très légèrement augmenté le rendement à l'abattage (+0.3 pt) et a réduit l'adiposité de la carcasse (note d'engraissment : -0.2 pt, gras interscapulaire : -9%). La qualité du Biceps Femoris a été sensiblement modifiée par le taux protéique de l'aliment (pHu : -0.05 pt, indice de jaune : +0.68 pt).

Abstract

The bis(salicylhydroxamato), bis(benzohydroxamato), and bis(benzoato) complexes of UO22+ in aqueous solution have been investigated in a combined experimental and computational effort using extended X-ray absorption fine structure and UV−vis spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) techniques, respectively. Experimental data indicates 5-fold UO22+ coordination with mean equatorial U−O distances of 2.42 and 2.40 Å for the salicyl- and benzohydroxamate systems, respectively. DFT calculations on microsolvated model systems [UO2L2OH2] indicate UO22+ eta-2-chelation via the hydroxamate and benzoate oxygen atoms in excellent agreement with experimental data; calculated complex stabilities support that UO22+ prefers hydroxamate over carboxylate coordination. The 414 nm absorption band of UO22+ in aqueous solution is blue-shifted to 390 and 386 nm upon complexation by salicyl- and benzohydroxamate, respectively. Calculated time-dependent DFT excitation energies of [UO2L2OH2], however, occasionally fail to reproduce accurately experimental UV−vis spectra, which are dominated by L− -to- UO22+ charge-transfer contributions. We additionally show that the UVI large-core pseudopotential approximation recently developed by some of the authors can routinely be applied for electronic structure calculations not involving uranium 5f occupations significantly different from UVI.

Abstract

Dendrites of locus coeruleus (LC) neurons laying within the pericoerulean neuropil (PCA) organize the major site where tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) is present throughout postnatal development. Those dendrites constitute the neuronal compartment in which TH levels increase beyond postnatal day (P) 21 or after RU24722-induced TH expression. Distal LC dendrites are present in the PCA by at least P20 but are devoid of TH and can rapidly accumulate TH protein when gene induction is triggered. Contrasting with the increase in TH levels within LC perikarya and dendrites, TH-mRNA concentration remains constant in LC perikarya from P4 to P42. Thus, supposing TH synthesis and degradation are also constant, any change in TH levels targeted toward axons might be balanced by a shift in the TH deposition within LC dendrites. This mechanism may be crucial in functions that the different processes of LC neurons have at critical steps of postnatal ontogeny.

Abstract

The in vivo behavior of 4-(2′-methoxyphenyl)-1-[2′-[N-(2″-pyridinyl)-p-[18F]fluorobenzamido]ethyl]-piperazine (p-[18F]MPPF), a new serotonin 5-HT1A antagonist, was studied in awake, freely moving rats. Biodistribution studies showed that the carbon-fluorine bond was stable in vivo, that this compound was able to cross the blood-brain barrier, and that a general diffusion equilibrium could account for the availability of the tracer. The great quantity of highly polar metabolites found in plasma did not contribute to the small amounts of metabolites found in hippocampus, frontal cortex, and cerebellum. Exvivo p-[18F]MPPF and in vitro 8-hydroxy-2-(di-n-[3H]propylamino)tetralin autoradiography were compared both qualitatively and quantitatively. Qualitative evaluation proved that the same brain regions were labeled and that the p-[18F]MPPF labeling is (a) in total agreement with the known distribution of 5-HT1A receptors in rats and (b) characterized by very low nonspecific binding. Quantitative comparison demonstrated that the in vivo labeling pattern obtained with p-[18F]MPPF cannot be explained by differences in regional blood flow, capillary density, or permeability. The 5-HT1A specificity of p-[18F]MPPF and binding reversibility were confirmed in vivo with displacement experiments. 45. Recurrences in nodal T-cell lymphoma. Changes in histologic appearance and immunophenotype over the course of disease.

Abstract

We examined the patterns of relapse or persistence in 37 cases of nodal peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) to address the morphologic and immunophenotypic findings. Relapses were documented in lymph node (25 cases) and/or a variety of extranodal sites at a mean of 21 months after presentation; several cases recurred as late as 13 years. Persistent bone marrow involvement was a feature of angioimmunoblastic lymphoma (AIL) and histiocyte-rich and small-cell tumors. Relapses in anaplastic tumors often involved unusual extranodal sites. The majority of relapsed PTCLs retained a similar histologic appearance, pattern of nodal involvement, and immunophenotype. Histologic progression, as assessed by increased numbers of large cells, was seen in 3 cases of AIL, in 1 case with an initial small cell morphologic appearance, and in 2 cases of PTCL with an initial mixed small and large cell appearance. Immunostains for T-cell activation markers showed increased immunoreactive cells in 5 of the 6 cases, whereas increased numbers of p53-positive tumor cells were noted in 3 of the 6 cases. The discrete large cell transformation occasionally seen in B-cell lymphoma and extranodal T-cell lymphoma was not observed in these cases.

Abstract

Introduction: Bipolar disorder (BD) is comprised of fluctuating episodes of both depression and mania or hypomania. During depression stage bipolar patients are often misdiagnosed. There is no objective laboratory-based test or biological markers to discriminate unipolar from bipolar depression; the average interval between onset and proper diagnosis and treatment is estimated to be 5.8 years. Altered epigenetic mechanisms, including abnormal RNA editing, are involved in neuropsychiatric disorders like schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder and Major Depressive Disorder. Objectives: We focused on transcriptome-wide RNA editing modifications on Unipolar and BD patients to identify RNA editing variants that could be used as biomarkers to set up a clinically useful diagnostic assay for differential diagnosis of BD. Methods: We used whole-transcriptome sequencing (RNA-Seq) to identify differential A-to-I editing events in blood samples of Unipolar (n=13) and BD (n=14) patients and Targeted Next Generation Sequencing to validate those biomarkers in a large cohort of 297 patients (Unipolar, n=160 and BD, n=96). Results: We identified significant differential editing variants in a number of genes involved in different pathways relevant for mood disorders, e.g. immune system and CNS function. We selected a panel of 8 biomarkers which are simultaneously measured in patients' blood and rise specific signatures in man and women related to unipolar and bipolar depressive conditions. The test presents high performances (>80% specificity and selectivity). Conclusions: Our findings will contribute to a better understanding of the molecular pathophysiology of BD, and pave the way for the development of a diagnostic assay for BD with clinical application. 49. Separation of Sub-Micron Particles from Soils and Sediments without Mechanical Disturbance

Abstract

A method is described for the separation of the finest particles from soils and sediments without mechanical disturbance. Particles are separated through the induction of osmotic stress. Generally, samples are treated with a concentrated sodium salt solution and then exposed to water by diffusion. Naturally sodic samples are simply exposed to water. Solid samples and the swollen and dispersed material they produce are confined by dialysis tubing. Examples show that the method gives a size gradient of particles in a vertical column of suspension. The compositions of particles can vary with size. The method can be used to show the effects on separated particles of ions other than Na+and also of other physicochemical treatments of soils and sediments. It is inexpensive and requires little labor.
