With a growing number of electronic devices surrounding our daily life, it becomes increasingly important to create solutions for clear and simple communication and interaction at the human machine interface (HMI). Haptic feedback solutions play an important role as they give a clear direct link and response to the user. This work demonstrates multifunctional haptic feedback devices based on fully printed piezoelectric transducers realized with functional polymers on thin paper substrate. The devices are flexible; lightweight and show very high out-of-plane deflection of 213 µm at a moderate driving voltage of 50 Vrms (root mean square) achieved by an innovative multilayer design with up to five individually controllable active layers. The device creates a very clear haptic sensation to the human skin with a blocking force of 0.6 N at the resonance frequency of 320 Hz, which is located in the most sensitive range of the human fingertip. Additionally the transducer generates audible information above two kilohertz with a remarkable high sound pressure level. Thus the paper-based approach can be used for interactive displays in combination with touch sensation; sound and color prints. The work gives insights into the manufacturing process; the electrical characteristics; and an in-depth analysis of the 3D deflection of the device under variable conditions.

Fuel cells are often seen as an alternative to batteries and internal combustion engines to provide electrical power in portable, stationary, or automotive applications. However, several challenges have to be overcome to enable widespread market penetration. One of these challenges is the limited lifetime of fuel cells, or more specifically, the durability and stability of polymer electrolyte membranes. In proton exchange membrane fuel cells, the chemical degradation of widely used perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) membranes can be inhibited by radical scavengers. Instead of time-consuming in situ investigations, radicals are widely generated ex situ by Fenton’s reagent, but this also leads to an unrealistic accumulation of iron species. In a newly developed, time saving test protocol, CeO2, ZrO2 and yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) are investigated for their ability to protect PFSA membranes against radical attack and their diverse impact on the membrane properties. In alkaline anion exchange membrane fuel cells, the durability depends on the caustic resistance of the functional groups providing anion conductivity. Theoretical considerations are performed to understand the stability of benzimidazolium and imidazolium with different substituents for steric protection. Limited structural integrity of anion-conducting polymers in challenging environment can lead to restricted usability. The incorporation of crosslinks is investigated as a convenient approach to control ion exchange capacity, prevent dissolution and enhance anion conduction.

Highly proton conducting polymers for operation in hydrogen/oxygen proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) provide often a poor mechanical strength due to high water contents. To strengthen the conducting polymers, blends with different ratios of partially fluorinated sulfonic acid graft and diblock copolymers with perfluorinated polymers were prepared. To analyze the effect of the different quantities of the compounds, with regard to water sorption and proton conducting properties, membranes were prepared by dissolving the components and drop casting. Partially sulfonated poly([vinylidene difluoride-co-chlorotrifluoroethylene]-g-styrene) (P(VDF-co-CTFE)-g-SPS) was blended with polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF), decreasing the ion exchange capacity (IEC). The blended polymers absorbed less water. However, the by AC impedance spectroscopy determined proton conductivity stayed stable or increased slightly. The effective proton mobility remained constant. Partially sulfonated poly([vinylidene difluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene]-b-styrene) (P(VDF-co-HFP)-b-SPS) with two different PS-block lengths were blended with different amounts of poly(vinylidene difluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (P(VDF-co-HFP)). In that case, the polymers absorbed less water and the proton conductivity decreased stepwise by adding more than 20 wt% P(VDF-co-HFP).
