We present the requirements, design and evaluation of the cryogenic continuously rotating half-wave plate (CHWP) for the Simons Observatory (SO). SO is a cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization experiment at Parque Astron\'{o}mico Atacama in northern Chile that covers a wide range of angular scales using both small (0.42 m) and large (6 m) aperture telescopes. In particular, the small aperture telescopes (SATs) focus on large angular scales for primordial B-mode polarization. To this end, the SATs employ a CHWP to modulate the polarization of the incident light at 8~Hz, suppressing atmospheric $1/f$ noise and mitigating systematic uncertainties that would otherwise arise due to the differential response of detectors sensitive to orthogonal polarizations. The CHWP consists of a 505 mm diameter achromatic sapphire HWP and a cryogenic rotation mechanism, both of which are cooled down to $\sim$50 K to reduce detector thermal loading. Under normal operation the HWP is suspended by a superconducting magnetic bearing and rotates with a constant 2 Hz frequency, controlled by an electromagnetic synchronous motor. The rotation angle is detected through an angular encoder with a noise level of 0.07$\mu\mathrm{rad}\sqrt{\mathrm{s}}$. During a cooldown, the rotor is held in place by a grip-and-release mechanism that serves as both an alignment device and a thermal path. The electronic structure of UC$_x$ (x=0.9, 1.0, 1.1, 2.0) was studied by means of x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at the C $K$ edge and measurements in the high energy resolution fluorescence detection (HERFD) mode at the U $M_4$ and $L_3$ edges. The full-relativistic density functional theory calculations taking into account the $5f-5f$ Coulomb interaction $U$ and spin-orbit coupling (DFT+$U$+SOC) were also performed for UC and UC$_2$. While the U $L_3$ HERFD-XAS spectra of the studied samples reveal little difference, the U $M_4$ HERFD-XAS spectra show certain sensitivity to the varying carbon content in uranium carbides. The observed gradual changes in the U $M_4$ HERFD spectra suggest an increase in the C $2p$-U $5f$ charge transfer, which is supported by the orbital population analysis in the DFT+$U$+SOC calculations, indicating an increase in the U $5f$ occupancy in UC$_2$ as compared to that in UC. On the other hand, the density of states at the Fermi level were found to be significantly lower in UC$_2$, thus affecting the thermodynamic properties. Both the x-ray spectroscopic data (in particular, the C $K$ XAS measurements) and results of the DFT+$U$+SOC indicate the importance of taking into account $U$ and SOC for the description of the electronic structure of actinide carbides.

Resonant tunneling of electrons between two ferromagnets and a quantum dot in the presence of an externally applied magnetic field reveals a strong gate dependence in the linear and nonlinear bias regime. This gate dependence originates from the interplay between Coulomb interactions and spin-dependent hybridization between the quantum dot and the leads. We report on the importance of resonant-tunneling processes on quantum transport through interacting quantum-dot spin valves. To include Coulomb interaction in the calculation of the tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR), we reformulate and generalize the recently-developed, numerically-exact method of iterative summation of path integrals (ISPI) to account for spin-dependent tunneling. The ISPI scheme allows us to investigate weak to intermediate Coulomb interaction in a wide range of gate and bias voltage and down to temperatures at which a perturbative treatment of tunneling severely fails., Comment: 13 pages, 11 Figs, published version

Patients diagnosed with epilepsy experience cognitive dysfunction that may be due to a transient cognitive/memory impairment (TCI/TMI) caused by spontaneous epileptiform spikes. We asked in a cohort of 166 adult patients with medically refractory focal epilepsy if spikes in specific neuroanatomical regions during verbal episodic memory encoding would significantly decrease the probability of recall. We found using a na\"ive Bayesian machine learning model that the probability of correct word recall decreased significantly by 11.9% when spikes occurred in left Brodmann area 21 (BA)21, (p<0.001), 49.7% in left BA38 (p=0.01), and 32.2% in right BA38 (p<0.001), and 21.4% in left BA36 (p<0.01). We also examined the influence of the seizure-onset zone and the language dominant hemisphere on this effect. Our results demonstrate that spontaneous epileptiform spikes produce a large effect TCI/TMI in brain regions known to be important in semantic processing and episodic memory. An epitaxial NdFeAs(O,F) thin film of 90 nm thickness grown by molecular beam epitaxy on MgO single crystal with Tc = 44.2 K has been investigated regarding a possible vortex glass-liquid tran-sition. The voltage-current characteristics show excellent scalability according to the vortex-glass model with a static critical exponent {\nu} of around 1.35 and a temperature-dependent dynamic exponent z increasing from 7.8 to 9.0 for the investigated temperature range. In the fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology, it is important to be able to functionalize surfaces chemically for a wide variety of applications. Scanning tunneling microscopes (STMs) are important instruments in this area used to measure the surface structure and chemistry with better than molecular resolution. Self-assembly is frequently used to create monolayers that redefine the surface chemistry in just a single-molecule-thick layer. Indeed, STM images reveal rich information about the structure of self-assembled monolayers since they convey chemical and physical properties of the studied material. In order to assist in and to enhance the analysis of STM and other images, we propose and demonstrate an image-processing framework that produces two image segmentations: one is based on intensities (apparent heights in STM images) and the other is based on textural patterns. The proposed framework begins with a cartoon+texture decomposition, which separates an image into its cartoon and texture components. Afterward, the cartoon image is segmented by a modified multiphase version of the local Chan-Vese model, while the texture image is segmented by a combination of 2D empirical wavelet transform and a clustering algorithm. Overall, our proposed framework contains several new features, specifically in presenting a new application of cartoon+texture decomposition and of the empirical wavelet transforms and in developing a specialized framework to segment STM images and other data. To demonstrate the potential of our approach, we apply it to actual STM images of cyanide monolayers on Au\{111\} and present their corresponding segmentation results.

The ability to highly localize light with strong electric field enhancement is critical for enabling higher efficiency solar cells, light sources, and modulators. While deep subwavelength modes can be realized with plasmonic resonators, large losses in these metal structures preclude most practical applications. We developed an alternative approach to achieving subwavelength confinement that is not accompanied by inhibitive losses. We experimentally demonstrate a dielectric bowtie photonic crystal structure that supports mode volumes commensurate with plasmonic elements and quality factors that reveal ultra-low losses. Our approach opens the door to the extremely strong light-matter interaction regime with simultaneously both ultra-low mode volume and ultra-high quality factor that has remained elusive in optical resonators.

We study the interplay of spin and charge coherence in a single-level quantum dot. A tunnel coupling to a superconducting lead induces superconducting correlations in the dot. With full spin symmetry retained, only even-singlet superconducting correlations are generated. An applied magnetic field or attached ferromagnetic leads partially or fully reduce the spin symmetry, and odd-triplet superconducting correlations are generated as well. For single-level quantum dots, no other superconducting correlations are possible. We analyze, with the help of a diagrammatic real-time technique, the interplay of spin symmetry and superconductivity and its signatures in electronic transport, in particular current and shot noise., Comment: (replaced by accepted version)

Currently, most of the basic mechanisms governing tumor-immune system interactions, in combination with modulations of tumor-associated vasculature, are far from being completely understood. Here, we propose a mathematical model of vascularized tumor growth, where the main novelty is the modeling of the interplay between functional tumor vasculature and effector cell recruitment dynamics. Parameters are calibrated on the basis of different in vivo immunocompromised Rag1-/- and wild-type (WT) BALB/c murine tumor growth experiments. The model analysis supports that tumor vasculature normalization can be a plausible and effective strategy to treat cancer when combined with appropriate immuno-stimulations. We find that improved levels of functional tumor vasculature, potentially mediated by normalization or stress alleviation strategies, can provide beneficial outcomes in terms of tumor burden reduction and growth control. Normalization of tumor blood vessels opens a therapeutic window of opportunity to augment the antitumor immune responses, as well as to reduce the intratumoral immunosuppression and induced-hypoxia due to vascular abnormalities. The potential success of normalizing tumor-associated vasculature closely depends on the effector cell recruitment dynamics and tumor sizes. Furthermore, an arbitrary increase of initial effector cell concentration does not necessarily imply a better tumor control. We evidence the existence of an optimal concentration range of effector cells for tumor shrinkage. Based on these findings, we suggest a theory-driven therapeutic proposal that optimally combines immuno- and vaso-modulatory interventions.

We show that in the presence of ferromagnetic electronic reservoirs and spin-dependent tunnel couplings, molecular vibrations in nonmagnetic single molecular transistors induce an effective intramolecular exchange magnetic field. It generates a finite spin-accumulation and -precession for the electrons confined on the molecular bridge and occurs under (non)equilibrium conditions. The effective exchange magnetic field is calculated here to lowest order in the tunnel coupling for a nonequilibrium transport setup. Coulomb interaction between electrons is taken into account as well as a finite electron-phonon coupling. We show that for realistic physical parameters, an effective spin-phonon coupling emerges. It is induced by quantum many-body interactions, which are either electron-phonon or Coulomb-like. We investigate the precession and accumulation of the confined spins as function of bias- and gate-voltages as well as their dependence on the angle enclosed by the magnetizations between the left and right reservoir., Comment: replaced with published version

We investigate cooling of a vibrational mode of a magnetic quantum dot by a spin-polarized tunneling charge current, exploiting the interaction between the magnetization and the vibration. The spin-polarized charge current polarizes the magnetic nanoisland, lowering its energy. Inevitable Ohmic energy losses due to the charge current flow will heat up the vibration. A small but finite coupling between the vibration and the local magnetic moment then permits an energy exchange, resulting in a lower energy, i.e., cooling, of the vibrational mode. We determine parameter regimes for the cooling of the vibration below $50\%$ of its initial value. Lowest final phonon temperature is observed for weak electron-phonon-coupling but similar magnetization-phonon coupling strength.
