8. The Emergence of Greenland Meltwater Impacts : From Boundary Currents to the Atlantic Overturning Circulation

Abstract

The Greenland ice sheet has been steadily losing mass over the past decades from rising air temperatures and global warming. Additional freshwater input to the subpolar North Atlantic (SPNA) has the potential to reach areas where deep waters are formed, creating a lid of low salinity water resulting in a more strongly stratified layer. This could inhibit deep convection, potentially having future implications for the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) and heat redistribution. This thesis aims to identify and quantify an emerging impact of enhanced Greenland meltwater runoff, at its current magnitudes, on hydrography and dynamics in the SPNA, by: (i) investigating the freshwater propagation and sources along the East Greenland shelf from 1993-2019 using high-resolution model output, reanalysis, and observations; (ii) further identify the impacts from enhanced meltwater input into the SPNA using a set of two twin model experiments with differing inputs of freshwater from Greenland; and (iii) investigate larger scale variability focusing on sea surface height anomalies and the relationship between differing AMOC strengths on decadal timescales, including the net effect of Greenland meltwater. This thesis provides new insights into the local impact of Greenland meltwater runoff and its current increase. While the signal is still relatively small, there are detectable hydrographic changes that occur primarily along the East and West Greenland boundary currents with potential for meltwater to reach deep convective sites. However it is too early to say if there additional Greenland runoff has influenced the strengh of the AMOC. There are still open questions to as what, how, and when Greenland meltwater may tip the freshwater balance of the SPNA. Thus it is important to continue monitoring freshwater changes using both observations and models.

Abstract

Freshwater input from Greenland ice sheet melt has been increasing in the past decades from warming temperatures. To identify the impacts from enhanced meltwater input into the subpolar North Atlantic from 1997 to 2021, we use output from two nearly identical simulations in the eddy-rich model VIKING20X (1/20°) only differing in the freshwater input from Greenland: one with realistic interannually varying runoff increasing in the early 2000s and the other with climatologically (1961–2000) continued runoff. The majority of the additional freshwater remains within the boundary current enhancing the density gradient toward the warm and salty interior waters yielding increased current velocities. The accelerated boundary current shows a tendency to enhanced, upstream shifted eddy shedding into the Labrador Sea interior. Further, the experiments allow to attribute higher stratification and shallower mixed layers southwest of Greenland and deeper mixed layers in the Irminger Sea, particularly in 2015–2018, to the runoff increase in the early 2000s. 19. Do Salinity Variations Along the East Greenland Shelf Show Imprints of Increasing Meltwater Runoff?

Abstract

Key Points: - During 1993–2019, the East Greenland Coastal Current is freshest in 2010 and 2012 notably matching years of exceptional Greenland runoff - Freshwater anomalies from sea-ice melt and Arctic export advected along east Greenland are of similar magnitudes as those linked to runoff - Simulation of fresh coastal waters requires improved surface boundary conditions and/or models capable of representing mesoscale dynamics Accelerated melting of the Greenland Ice Sheet is considered a tipping element in the freshwater balance of the subpolar North Atlantic (SPNA). The East Greenland Current (EGC) and Coastal Current (EGCC) are the major conduits for transporting Arctic-sourced and Greenland glacial freshwater. Understanding freshwater changes in the EGC system and drivers thereof is crucial for connecting tipping elements in the SPNA. Using the eddy-rich model VIKING20X (1/20°) and Copernicus GLORYS12 (1/12°), we find that from 1993 to 2019 freshwater remains close to the shelf with interannual extremes in freshwater content (FWC) attributable to the imprint of Greenland melt only in years 2010 and 2012. Runoff increased significantly from 1995 to 2005 and Arctic freshwater export after 2005. Overall, regional wind patterns, sea ice melt and increasingly glacial ice and snow meltwater runoff along with the Arctic-sourced Polar Water set interannual FWC variations in the EGC system. We emphasize that these freshwater sources have different seasonal timing. South of 65°N sea ice melts year round and retreats to north of 65°N, where melt in summer prevails. Greenland runoff peaks in June–August with only some locations of year round discharge. Alongshore winds intensify in fall and winter where reduced onshore Ekman transport allows for freshwater to spread laterally in the EGC. Abstract

Objective The aim of this study was to quantify the physiological workload of manual laborers in industrial sugarcane and assess the effect of receiving a rest, shade, and hydration intervention to reduce heat stress exposure risk. Methods In an observational study, physiological workload was evaluated for burned cane cutters (BCC), seed cutters (SC) and drip irrigation repair workers (DIRW) using heart rate (HR) recorded continuously (Polar®) across a work shift. Workers' percentage of maximal HR (%HRmax), time spent in different HR zones, and estimated core temperature (ECTemp) were calculated. The effect of increasing rest across two harvests was evaluated for BCC and SC. Results A total of 162 workers participated in this study [52 BCC (all male), 71 SC (13 female) and 39 DIRW (16 female)]. Average %HRmax across a work shift was similar between BCC and SC (BCC: 58%, SC: 59%), but lower in DIRW (51%). BCC and SC spent similar proportions of work shifts at hard/very hard intensities (BCC: 13%, SC: 15%), versus DIRW who worked mostly at light (46%) or light-moderate (39%) intensities. SC maximum ECTemp reached 38.2°C, BCC 38.1°C; while DIRW only reached 37.7°C. Females performed at a higher %HRmax than males across work shifts (SC 64% versus 58%; DIRW 55% versus 49%). An additional rest period was associated with a lower average %HRmax across a work shift in BCC. Conclusion In this setting, BCC and SC both undertake very physiologically demanding work. Females maintained a higher workload than male co-workers. Regulated rest periods each hour, with water and shade access, appears to reduce physiological workload/strain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

OBJECTIVES: To study Mesoamerican nephropathy (MeN) and its risk factors in three hot occupations. DESIGN: Cross-sectional. SETTING: Chinandega and León municipalities, a MeN hotspot on the Nicaraguan Pacific coast, January-February 2013. PARTICIPANTS: 194 male workers aged 17-39 years: 86 sugarcane cutters, 56 construction workers, 52 small-scale farmers. OUTCOME MEASURES: (1) Differences between the three occupational groups in prevalences/levels of socioeconomic, occupational, lifestyle and health risk factors for chronic kidney disease (CKD) and in biomarkers of kidney function and hydration; (2) differences in prevalences/levels of CKD risk factors between workers with reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFRCKD-EPI construction > farming, p=0.003). Significant trends (cane > construction > farming) were also observed for high serum urea nitrogen (blood urea nitrogen (BUN) >20 mg/dL), high serum creatinine (SCr >1.2 mg/dL), low urinary pH (≤5.5) and high BUN/SCr ratio (>20) but not for high urinary specific gravity (≥1.030).
