Heat and mass transfer are important processes associated with wildland fire. Both radiant and convective heat transfer are important processes with convection often being the dominant mechanism. Unlike radiation, there is no direct method of measuring convection. Since convective heat transfer is governed by the fluid flow, understanding the fluid flow provides good understanding on the convective heat transfer. In fluid mechanics, flow visualization is a common methodology used to understand flow characteristics. Schlieren imagery is a common flow visualization technique which captures changes in fluid density such as the ones occur around a fire. Background-Oriented Schlieren (BOS) is a flow visualization technique that uses a background image with various patterns to visualize the density gradient caused by density fluctuations in a fluid. We applied BOS to measure the flow associated with laboratory-scale line fires. The reproducible fires were spreading in pine needle fuel beds in a wind tunnel with and without imposed wind. This initial application of BOS in a fire environment successfully visualized the flow around the flame. The visualized flow underwent a secondary process to produce the velocity field of the flow. Results indicate that even in conditions where the fire is known to be dominated by radiation, wind carried the thermal plume ahead of the flame front and expanded the thermal plume. In contrast, in the no wind condition, the thermal plume remained vertical above the fire. Using the BOS imagery, a new model for estimation of convective heat transfer was introduced. In addition to estimation of the convective heat transfer ahead of the fire, this new model enables visualization of convective motion.

Smoke from human-induced fires such as prescribed fires can occasionally cause significant reduction in visibility on highways in the southern United States. Visibility reduction to less than 3 m has been termed “superfog” and environmental conditions that lead to its formation have been proposed previously. Accurate characterization and prediction of precursor conditions for superfog is needed to prevent dangerous low visibility situations when planning prescribed fires. It is hypothesized that extremely hygroscopic cloud condensation nuclei from the smoldering phase of a fire can produce a large number of droplets smaller in size than in naturally occurring fog. This large number of small droplets can produce superfog conditions with relatively low liquid water content. A thermodynamics-based model for fog formation was developed. Laboratory generated superfog measured by a Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer determined that mean droplet radius was 1.5 μm and the size distribution could be modeled with a lognormal distribution. Experiments in an environmentally-conditioned wind tunnel using longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) needle fuel beds provided visibility, heat flux, temperature, humidity, and particle data for model validation. Numerical modeling was used to approximate the growth of a superfog boundary-layer with liquid water content values of 2 g m−3 or greater. The model successfully predicted previous superfog events.

Background: Fire models have used pyrolysis data from oxidising and non-oxidising environments for flaming combustion. In wildland fires pyrolysis, flaming and smouldering combustion typically occur in an oxidising environment (the atmosphere). Aims: Using compositional data analysis methods, determine if the composition of pyrolysis gases measured in non-oxidising and ambient (oxidising) atmospheric conditions were similar. Methods: Permanent gases and tars were measured in a fuel-rich (non-oxidising) environment in a flat flame burner (FFB). Permanent and light hydrocarbon gases were measured for the same fuels heated by a fire flame in ambient atmospheric conditions (oxidising environment). Log-ratio balances of the measured gases common to both environments (CO, CO2, CH4, H2, C6H6O (phenol), and other gases) were examined by principal components analysis (PCA), canonical discriminant analysis (CDA) and permutational multivariate analysis of variance (PERMANOVA). Key results: Mean composition changed between the non-oxidising and ambient atmosphere samples. PCA showed that flat flame burner (FFB) samples were tightly clustered and distinct from the ambient atmosphere samples. CDA found that the difference between environments was defined by the CO-CO2 log-ratio balance. PERMANOVA and pairwise comparisons found FFB samples differed from the ambient atmosphere samples which did not differ from each other. Conclusion: Relative composition of these pyrolysis gases differed between the oxidising and non-oxidising environments. This comparison was one of the first comparisons made between bench-scale and field scale pyrolysis measurements using compositional data analysis. Implications: These results indicate the need for more fundamental research on the early time-dependent pyrolysis of vegetation in the presence of oxygen. The aim of this study was to investigate the pyrolysis of selected California foliage and estimate the energy content of the released volatiles to show the significance of the pyrolysis of foliage and its role during wildland fires. While the majority of the volatiles released during the pyrolysis of foliage later combust and promote fire propagation, studies on the energy released from combustion of these compounds are scarce. Samples of chamise (Adenostoma fasciculatum), Eastwood's manzanita (Arctostaphylos glandulosa), scrub oak (Quercus berberidifolia), hoaryleaf ceanothus (Ceanothus crassifolius), all native to southern California, and sparkleberry (Vaccinium arboreum), native to the southern U.S., were pyrolyzed at 725 °C with a heating rate of approximately 180 °C/s to mimic the conditions of wildland fires. Tar and light gases were collected and analyzed. Tar from chamise, scrub oak, ceanothus and sparkleberry was abundant in aromatics, especially phenol, while tar from manzanita was mainly composed of cycloalkenes. The four major components of light gases were CO, CO2, CH4 and H2. Estimated values for the high heating values (HHVs) of volatiles ranged between 18.9 and 23.2 (MJ/kg of biomass) with tar contributing to over 80% of the HHVs of the volatiles. The present protocol presents a laboratory technique designed to study chaparral crown fire ignition and spread. Experiments were conducted in a low velocity fire wind tunnel where two distinct layers of fuel were constructed to represent surface and crown fuels in chaparral. Chamise, a common chaparral shrub, comprised the live crown layer. The dead fuel surface layer was constructed with excelsior (shredded wood). We developed a methodology to measure mass loss, temperature, and flame height for both fuel layers. Thermocouples placed in each layer estimated temperature. A video camera captured the visible flame. Post-processing of digital imagery yielded flame characteristics including height and flame tilt. A custom crown mass loss instrument developed in-house measured the evolution of the mass of the crown layer during the burn. Mass loss and temperature trends obtained using the technique matched theory and other empirical studies. In this study, we present detailed experimental procedures and information about the instrumentation used. The representative results for the fuel mass loss rate and temperature filed within the fuel bed are also included and discussed.

The impact of pyrolysis gas composition and the underlying reaction kinetics on the burning characteristics of a leaf was computationally investigated. The computational configuration resembled a previous experimental setup where vertically oriented manzanita (Arctostaphylos glandulosa) leaves were burned. Different compositions and reaction kinetics for the pyrolysis gas released during the leaf thermal decomposition were examined. The most detailed composition included $${\rm{C}}{{\rm{H}}_4}$$ C H 4 , $${\rm{CO}}$$ CO , $${\rm{C}}{{\rm{O}}_2}$$ C O 2 , and $${{\rm{H}}_2}$$ H 2 , which was suggested by the previous experimental study of pyrolysis products of different plant species. The least involved compositions only included either $${\rm{C}}{{\rm{H}}_4}$$ C H 4 or $${\rm{CO}}$$ CO . In all considered compositions, in addition to pyrolysis gas, the release of the heavy gas, i.e. tar, was accounted for. Tar breakdown was represented by a single-step reaction with the light gases above and soot as the products where the stoichiometric coefficients were determined by an optimization technique for consistency with the measurements for the tar molecule. The burning simulation results agreed best with the previous experimental data when a mixture of $${\rm{C}}{{\rm{H}}_4}$$ C H 4 , $${\rm{CO}}$$ CO , $${\rm{C}}{{\rm{O}}_2}$$ C O 2 was used. The least agreement was noted when pyrolysis gas was represented by only $${\rm{C}}{{\rm{H}}_4}$$ C H 4 . The interaction of converging fires often leads to significant changes in fire behavior, including increased flame length, angle, and intensity. In this paper, the fluid mechanics of two adjacent line fires are studied both theoretically and experimentally. A simple potential flow model is used to explain the tilting of interacting flames towards each other, which results from a momentum imbalance triggered by fire geometry. The model was validated by measuring the velocity field surrounding stationary alcohol pool fires. The flow field was seeded with high-contrast colored smoke, and the motion of smoke structures was analyzed using a cross-correlation optical flow technique. The measured velocities and flame angles are found to compare reasonably with the predicted values, and an analogy between merging fires and wind-blown flames is proposed.

Ambient soil temperatures were measured every four weeks from May 1986 to November 1986 at three depths under the organic forest floor in ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Lawson & C. Lawson) forests in three stand types subjected to periodic prescribed burning. Temperatures at the organic layer--soil surface interface in sawtimber stands were higher and more variable than in pole and saplings stands. Temperature variability reached a maximum in the summer and decreased into the fall and early winter. Soil temperature variability decreased as depth below the surface increased. Three years after the low-intensity prescribed burns, soil temperatures in the burned stands were not significantly different from the those in the unburned controls, suggesting that any effect, though none was detected, of the low-intensity prescribed burns on soil temperature and belowground processes affected by temperature is short-lived in these stands. Lawson) dans trois types de peuplement soumis periodiquement a un brulage dirige. La temperature a l'interface entre la couverture morte et la surface du sol dans des peuplements au stade de bois de sciage etait plus elevee et plus variable que dans les peuplements au stade de perchis ou de gaulis. La variation de la temperature atteignait un maximum durant l'ete et diminuait durant l'automne et le debut de l'hiver. La variation de la temperature du sol diminuait avec la profondeur sous la surface. Trois ans apres des brulages diriges de faible intensite, la temperature du sol dans les peuplements brules n'etait pas significativement differente de celle des temoins non brules, indiquant que, bien qu'aucun n'ait ete detecte, les effets des brulages de faible intensite sur la temperature du sol et les processus souterrains influences par la temperature sont ephemeres.
