Biostimulants (Bio-effectors, BEs) comprise plant growth-promoting microorganisms and active natural substances that promote plant nutrient-acquisition, stress resilience, growth, crop quality and yield. Unfortunately, the effectiveness of BEs, particularly under field conditions, appears highly variable and poorly quantified. Using random model meta-analyses tools, we summarize the effects of 107 BE treatments on the performance of major crops, mainly conducted within the EU-funded project BIOFECTOR with a focus on phosphorus (P) nutrition, over five years. Our analyses comprised 94 controlled pot and 47 field experiments under different geoclimatic conditions, with variable stress levels across European countries and Israel. The results show an average growth/yield increase by 9.3% (n=945), with substantial differences between crops (tomato > maize > wheat) and growth conditions (controlled nursery + field (Seed germination and nursery under controlled conditions and young plants transplanted to the field) > controlled > field). Average crop growth responses were independent of BE type, P fertilizer type, soil pH and plant-available soil P (water-P, Olsen-P or Calcium acetate lactate-P). BE effectiveness profited from manure and other organic fertilizers, increasing soil pH and presence of abiotic stresses (cold, drought/heat or salinity). Systematic meta-studies based on published literature commonly face the inherent problem of publication bias where the most suspected form is the selective publication of statistically significant results. In this meta-analysis, however, the results obtained from all experiments within the project are included. Therefore, it is free of publication bias. In contrast to reviews of published literature, our unique study design is based on a common standardized protocol which applies to all experiments conducted within the project to reduce sources of variability. Materials Research Letters 11, 274 (2023); https://doi.org/10.1080/21663831.2022.2147406., This study developed a non-equiatomic Ti28.33Zr28.33Hf28.33Nb6.74Ta6.74Mo1.55 super-solid solutionized BioHEA using laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) to reach the full potential as BioHEA. We succeeded in significant suppression of elemental segregation, thus, resulting in a single crystalline-like texture by activating layer-to-layer epitaxial growth. Relatively low Young’s modulus was achieved in the single crystalline-like BioHEA. Moreover, LPBF-fabricated BioHEA exhibited significantly higher yield stress (1355–1426 MPa) due to the effective solid solution hardening compared to as-cast counterpart with marked segregation (949 MPa), and good biocompatibility. This is first report achieving BioHEA with low modulus, excellent strength-ductility balance, and good biocompatibility via LPBF.

IOFAIR holistically determines soil biodiversity under different farming practices and environmental stressors to anticipate negative impacts of climate change on belowground processes and provide adaptation strategies. The BIOFAIR project comprehensively addresses the diversity of soil organisms, from microbes to mites, and how they link to soil functioning in terms of disease suppression and carbon and nutrient cycling. On the crop site, a specific focus is given to grain quality parameters such as vitamin and mineral nutrient contents essential for many human body functions, and to technological bread making properties such as flour viscosity, to ensure the crops of the future have a high nutritious value and are suitable for food production.

Ziel des Banat Green Deal Projekts „GreenERDE“ (Bildung und Forschung im Kontext der digitalen und ökologischen Transformation des Agrarbereichs im Banat und Baden-Württemberg - auf dem Weg zu Ressourceneffizienz und Resilienz) war es entsprechend der landestypischen Schwerpunkte Berufliche Bildung, Umwelt, Wirtschaft und Capacity Building das bisherige Engagement Baden-Württembergs im landwirtschaftlichen Berufsbildungszentrum Voiteg mit einer nachhaltigen Entwicklungsstrategie zur Stärkung der Wettbewerbsfähigkeit des Agrarbereichs im rumänischen Banat und benachbarter Regionen mit innovativen fachlichen und gleichzeitig soziokulturell interessanten Inhalten zu verbinden. Das im Rahmen des Projekts durchgeführte Fortbildungsprogramm „Landwirtschaft in Verantwortung für unsere gemeinsame Welt“, zielt auf den Wissens- und Erfahrungstransfer unter Landwirten und anderen interessirten Personen in der Banat-Region, Rumänien und anderen Teilen der Welt ab. Aktuelle und zukünftige Herausforderungen, wie die ökologische Umstellung und die digitale Transformation der landwirtschaftlichen Produktion, aber auch soziale, wirtschaftliche und kulturelle Aspekte wurden adressiert. Innovatives und relevantes Wissen aus Praxis, Forschungs- oder Entwicklungsprojekten in ganz Europa und anderen Kontinenten wird in einem Trainingsformat für interessierte Teilnehmer präsentiert., The Banat Green Deal project "GreenERDE" (Education and Research in the context of the digital and ecological transformation of agriculture in the Banat Region and Baden-Württemberg - towards resource efficiency and resilience) aimed to strengthen the the competitiveness of the agricultural sector in the Romanian Banat, Baden-Württemberg and neighboring regions with innovative technical and at the same time socio-cultural connect interesting content. The advanced training program “Farming in Responsibility for Our Common World” carried out as part of this project aims at the transfer of knowledge and experience among farmers and other interested persons. Current and future challenges, such as ecological conversion and the digital transformation of agricultural production, but also social, economic and cultural aspects were addressed. Innovative and relevant knowledge from practice, research or development projects throughout Europe and other continents is presented.

Mineral nutrient supply or tissue concentrations affect plant diseases and pests in various ways. The supply of nutrients changes the resistance of plants to pathogens and pests by altering growth and tissue composition (e.g., concentration of soluble compounds or defense compounds), the expression of plant defense and pathogen/pest virulence genes, and the interactions with beneficial soil microorganisms. Depending on the pathogen or pest and nutrient, adequate nutrient supply for optimal plant growth may increase or decrease disease incidence. This chapter discusses the effects of nutrient supply on foliar and soil-borne fungal and bacterial diseases as well as on pests. Calcium and B inhibit pathogen invasion via their stabilizing effect on cell walls and membranes. Silicon and Mn play important roles in defense reactions to pathogen infection or pest attack, whereas N and K exert their effects mainly via modulating the concentrations of soluble compounds in plant tissues. The effects of crop management (e.g., timing and form of fertilizers, liming, and/or biological agents) on disease incidence are outlined.

Time travelling with Triticum: An Ecotron experiment to study the wheat of the future

The success, if not survival, of service businesses depends on their ability to satisfy their customers. Yet, businesses often recognize slumping customer satisfaction too late and ultimately fail. To prevent this, marketers require early warning tools. In this paper, we build upon online ratings as a direct measure of customer satisfaction and, based on this, predict business failures. Specifically, we develop a variable-duration hidden Markov model; it models the rating sequence of a service business in order to predict the likelihood of failure. Using 64,887 ratings from 921 restaurants, we find that our model detects business failures with a balanced accuracy of 78.02%, and this prediction is even possible several months in advance. In comparison, simple metrics from practice have limited ability in predicting business failures; for instance, the mean rating yields a balanced accuracy of only around 50%. Furthermore, our model recovers a latent state (at risk) with an elevated failure rate. Avoiding the at-risk state is associated with a reduction in the failure rate of more than 41.41%. Our research thus entails direct managerial implications: we assist marketers in monitoring customer satisfaction and, for this purpose, offer a datadriven tool that provides early warnings of impending business failures.

The vocational training course program “Agriculture in Responsibility for our common World” organised within the frame of the Banat Green Deal Project “GreenERDE” (Education and Research in the context of the digital and ecological transformation of agriculture in the Banat Region and Baden-Württemberg - towards resource efficiency and resilience) and delivered between June 2021 and May 2022 targets the knowledge and experience transfer to the farmer community in the Banat Region, Romania and other parts of the world. Current and future challenges, such as the ecological conversion and digital transformation of agricultural production, but also social, economic and cultural aspects haven been addressed transcending prevailing patterns.
