The Future Circular Collider (FCC) at CERN, a proposed 100-km circular facility with several colliders in succession, culminates with a 100 TeV proton-proton collider. It offers a vast new domain of exploration in particle physics, with orders of magnitude advances in terms of Precision, Sensitivity and Energy. The implementation plan foresees, as a first step, an Electroweak Factory electron-positron collider. This high luminosity facility, operating between 90 and 365 GeV centre-of-mass energy, will study the heavy particles of the Standard Model, Z, W, Higgs, and top with unprecedented accuracy. The Electroweak Factory $e^+e^-$ collider constitutes a real challenge to the theory and to precision calculations, triggering the need for the development of new mathematical methods and software tools. A first workshop in 2018 had focused on the first FCC-ee stage, the Tera-Z, and confronted the theoretical status of precision Standard Model calculations on the Z-boson resonance to the experimental demands. The second workshop in January 2019, which is reported here, extended the scope to the next stages, with the production of W-bosons (FCC-ee-W), the Higgs boson (FCC-ee-H) and top quarks (FCC-ee-tt). In particular, the theoretical precision in the determination of the crucial input parameters, alpha_QED, alpha_QCD, M_W, m_t at the level of FCC-ee requirements is thoroughly discussed. The requirements on Standard Model theory calculations were spelled out, so as to meet the demanding accuracy of the FCC-ee experimental potential. The discussion of innovative methods and tools for multi-loop calculations was deepened. Furthermore, phenomenological analyses beyond the Standard Model were discussed, in particular the effective theory approaches. The reports of 2018 and 2019 serve as white papers of the workshop results and subsequent developments., Comment: Published version

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
Extensions of the Standard Model are required to give mass to the light neutrinos and explain neutrino oscillations. One of the simplest ideas is to introduce new heavy, gauge singlet fermions that play the role of right-handed neutrinos in a seesaw mechanism. They could have large Yukawa couplings to the Higgs boson, affecting the production of the Higgs bosons in association with a pair of W bosons at future lepton colliders. Working in the inverse seesaw model and taking into account all possible experimental constraints, we find that sizable deviations, as large as 66\% are possible. This makes the $W^+_{}W^-_{}H$ production cross-section a new, promising observable to constrain neutrino mass models. The effects are generic and expected to be present in other low-scale seesaw models., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, minor typos corrected, Talk presented at the International Workshop on Future Linear Colliders (LCWS2018), Arlington, Texas, 22-26 October 2018. - Abstract
An energy storage paradigm orthogonal to Li-ion battery chemistries can be conceptualized by employing anions as the primary charge carriers. F-ion conversion chemistries show promise but have limited cyclability as a result of the significant change in volume of active electrodes upon metal-metal fluoride interconversion. In contrast, the exploration of insertion chemistries has been stymied by the lack of hosts amenable to reversible F-ion insertion at room temperature. Here we show the reversible and homogeneous topochemical insertion/deinsertion and bulk diffusion of F ions within the one-dimensional tunnels of submicrometer-sized FeSb2O4 particles at room temperature. The insertion of F ions is evidenced by formal oxidation of the iron centers from Fe2+ to Fe3+ with a lattice volume contraction of

This is the third out of five chapters of the final report [1] of the Workshop on Physics at HL-LHC, and perspectives on HE-LHC [2]. It is devoted to the study of the potential, in the search for Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics, of the High Luminosity (HL) phase of the LHC, defined as $3~\mathrm{ab}^{-1}$ of data taken at a centre-of-mass energy of $14~\mathrm{TeV}$, and of a possible future upgrade, the High Energy (HE) LHC, defined as $15~\mathrm{ab}^{-1}$ of data at a centre-of-mass energy of $27~\mathrm{TeV}$. We consider a large variety of new physics models, both in a simplified model fashion and in a more model-dependent one. A long list of contributions from the theory and experimental (ATLAS, CMS, LHCb) communities have been collected and merged together to give a complete, wide, and consistent view of future prospects for BSM physics at the considered colliders. On top of the usual standard candles, such as supersymmetric simplified models and resonances, considered for the evaluation of future collider potentials, this report contains results on dark matter and dark sectors, long lived particles, leptoquarks, sterile neutrinos, axion-like particles, heavy scalars, vector-like quarks, and more. Particular attention is placed, especially in the study of the HL-LHC prospects, to the detector upgrades, the assessment of the future systematic uncertainties, and new experimental techniques. The general conclusion is that the HL-LHC, on top of allowing to extend the present LHC mass and coupling reach by $20-50\%$ on most new physics scenarios, will also be able to constrain, and potentially discover, new physics that is presently unconstrained. Moreover, compared to the HL-LHC, the reach in most observables will generally more than double at the HE-LHC, which may represent a good candidate future facility for a final test of TeV-scale new physics., Comment: Report from Working Group 3 on the Physics of the HL-LHC, and Perspectives at the HE-LHC; v2: final version updated with the latest contributions and summaries; 239 pages + refs; v3: typos and character misprint in Fig. 7.2 fixed; v4: added one missing author

Motivated by the success of the flavour physics programme carried out over the last decade at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), we characterize in detail the physics potential of its High-Luminosity and High-Energy upgrades in this domain of physics. We document the extraordinary breadth of the HL/HE-LHC programme enabled by a putative Upgrade II of the dedicated flavour physics experiment LHCb and the evolution of the established flavour physics role of the ATLAS and CMS general purpose experiments. We connect the dedicated flavour physics programme to studies of the top quark, Higgs boson, and direct high-$p_T$ searches for new particles and force carriers. We discuss the complementarity of their discovery potential for physics beyond the Standard Model, affirming the necessity to fully exploit the LHC's flavour physics potential throughout its upgrade eras., Comment: Report from Working Group 4 on the Physics of the HL-LHC, and Perspectives at the HE-LHC, 292 pages

Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
The absorption of a photon and the emission of an electron is not a simple, two-particle process. The complicated many-electron features observed during core photo-ionization can therefore reveal many of the hidden secrets about the ground and excited-state electronic structures of a material. Careful analysis of the photon-energy dependence of the Ni KLL Auger de-excitation spectra at and above the Ni 1s photo-ionization threshold has identified the satellite structure that appears in both the photo-electron emission and the x-ray absorption spectra of NiO as Ni metal 3d eg -> Ni metal 3d eg and O ligand 2p eg -> Ni metal 3d eg charge-transfer excitations, respectively. These assignments elucidate the conflicting theoretical predictions of the last five decades in addition to other anomalous effects in the spectroscopy of this unique material., Comment: 5 pages and 6 figures

We discuss the most general necessary and sufficient condition for three massless light neutrinos in variants of the type I seesaw mechanism in which we introduce an arbitrary number of fermionic gauge singlets. We find that having massless light neutrinos is equivalent to enforcing the conservation of lepton number. As a consequence, any symmetry that leads to massless light neutrinos will contain as an unbroken subgroup a conserved lepton number. This will be important for searches for heavy sterile neutrinos since in general the light neutrino masses will be proportional to small lepton number violating parameters that will also suppress lepton number violating signatures., Comment: 22+1 pages, 2 plots in 1 figure

We present here a study of the impact of a heavy neutrino (or heavy neutral lepton) on leptonic and semileptonic kaon decays. We used a simplified model consisting of 3 light neutrinos responsible for neutrino oscillations and a heavy sterile neutrino. We found that it can lead to large deviations from the Standard Model predictions for leptonic decays, in conflict with experimental measurements of $K_{e2}$ and the lepton universality test $R_K$. This allows to derive new constraints on the leptonic mixing for heavy sterile neutrinos. No tension was found when considering the semileptonic decays. Finally, we point out the potential of the decay $K_L \rightarrow \nu \nu$ as a clear signature of physics beyond the Standard Model., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, Proceedings of the 52nd Rencontres de Moriond EW 2017

The observation of charged lepton flavour violation would be a smoking gun for new physics and could help in pinpointing the mechanism at the origin of neutrino masses and mixing. We present here our recent studies of lepton flavour violating Higgs decays in the inverse seesaw and its supersymmetric embedding, two examples of low-scale seesaw mechanisms. We predict branching ratios as large as $10^{-5}$ for the decays $h\rightarrow \tau \mu$ and $h \rightarrow \tau e$ in the inverse seesaw, which can be probed in future colliders. Supersymmetric contributions can enhance the branching ratio of $h\rightarrow \tau \mu$ up to $1\%$, making it large enough to explain the small excess observed by ATLAS and CMS., Comment: Talk presented at NuPhys2015 (London, 16-18 December 2015). 5 pages, 2 figures

- Abstract
African swine fever is a transmissible virus impacting wild and domestic swine populations. In Europe, it is non-native and the recently introduced genotype affects wild boar populations with occasional outbreaks in domestic pigs. The ability to predict short-term spatial dynamics of this disease will greatly improve our ability to control and limit future spread of the virus. The BioDT disease outbreaks prototype, currently in development, implements an individual-based landscape-level mechanistic model as a digital twin aimed at providing informed support for management decisions in response to the spread of African swine fever in European wild boar populations.

In this letter we study new relevant phenomenological consequences of the right-handed heavy neutrinos with masses at the ${\cal O}(1)$ TeV energy scale, working within the context of the Inverse Seesaw Model that includes three pairs of quasi-degenerate pseudo-Dirac heavy neutrinos. We propose a new exotic signal of these heavy neutrinos at the CERN Large Hadron Collider containing a muon, a tau lepton, and two jets in the final state, which is based on the interesting fact that this model can incorporate large Lepton Flavor Violation for specific choices of the relevant parameters, particularly, the neutrino Yukawa couplings. We will show here that an observable number of $\mu\tau jj$ exotic events, without missing energy, can be produced at this ongoing run of the LHC., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. In this article we study the full one-loop SUSY contributions to the lepton flavor violating Higgs decay $h \to \tau \bar \mu $, within the context of the supersymmetric inverse sesaw model. We assume that both the right-handed neutrino masses, $M_R$, and their supersymmetric partner masses, $m_{\tilde \nu_R}$, are not far from the interesting ${\cal O}({\rm TeV})$ energy scale, and we work with scenarios with large neutrino Yukawa couplings that transmit large lepton flavor violating effects. By exploring the behavior with the most relevant parameters, mainly $M_R$, $m_{\tilde \nu_R}$ and the trilinear sneutrino coupling $A_\nu$, we will look for regions of the parameter space where the enhancement of $\mathrm{BR}(h\rightarrow \tau \bar \mu)$ is large enough to reach values at the percent level, which could explain the excess recently reported by CMS and ATLAS at the CERN Large Hadron Collider., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, 2 new figures, 1 new section and 2 new appendices, references added, conclusions unchanged, matches version to appear in PRD

Hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) and variable kinetic energy x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (VKE-XPS) analyses have been performed on 10 unit cell La$_{(1-{\delta})}$Al$_{(1+{\delta})}$O$_3$ films, with La:Al ratios of 1.1, 1.0, and 0.9, deposited on SrTiO$_3$. Of the three films, only the Al-rich film was known to have a conductive interface. VKE-XPS, coupled with maximum entropy analysis, shows significant differences in the compositional depth profile between the Al-rich, the La-rich, and stoichiometric films; significant La enrichment at the interface is observed in the La-rich and stoichiometric films, while the Al-rich shows little to no intermixing. Additionally, the La-rich and stoichiometric films show a high concentration of Al at the surface, which is not observed in the Al-rich film. HAXPES valence band (VB) analysis shows a broadening of the VB for the Al-rich sample relative to the stoichiometric and La-rich samples, which have insulating interfaces. This broadening is consistent with an electric field across the Al-rich film. These results are consistent with a defect driven electronic reconstruction., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

We find a new 5 eV satellite in the Ti 1s photoelectron spectrum of the transition-metal oxide SrTiO$_3$. This satellite appears in addition to the well-studied 13 eV structure that is typically associated with the Ti 2p core line. We give direct experimental evidence that the presence of two satellites is due to the crystal-field splitting of the metal 3d orbitals. They originate from ligand 2p t$_{2g}$ $\rightarrow$ metal 3d t$_{2g}$ and ligand 2p e$_g$ $\rightarrow$ metal 3d e$_g$ monopole charge-transfer excitations within the sudden approximation of quantum mechanics. This assignment is made by the energetics of the resonant and high-energy threshold behaviors of the Ti K-L$_2$L$_3$ Auger decay that follows Ti 1s photo-ionization., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

We present the first complete calculation of flavour violating lepton decays taking into account all supersymmetric (SUSY) and non-SUSY contributions in the context of the supersymmetric inverse seesaw, a specific SUSY low-scale seesaw model. We consider radiative and 3-body lepton decays as well as neutrinoless $\mu-e$ conversion in muonic atoms and perform a full one-loop calculation in the mass basis. Taking CMSSM-like boundary conditions for the soft SUSY breaking parameters, we find that cancellations between different contributions are present in several regions, which might reduce the branching ratios by as much as one order of magnitude. This has important consequences when translating current measurements into constraints and estimating the reach of future experiments, and justifies the use of a full calculation. We also show that the ratio of different cross-sections can discriminate between dominant SUSY or non-SUSY contributions., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables, Proceedings of the 37th International Conference on High Energy Physics (ICHEP 2014)

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
In the inverse seesaw model (ISS), the smallness of the neutrino masses is related to the smallness of a lepton number violating mass term whilst the seesaw scale is naturally close to the TeV scale, which allows for large effects in lepton flavor and universality violating observables. With the ongoing and planned measurements of the Higgs boson properties at the LHC, we found timely to investigate the possibility of having large lepton flavor violating Higgs decay (LFVHD) rates within the context of the ISS, considering the most generic case where three additional pairs of massive right-handed singlet neutrinos are added to the Standard Model particle content. We present a full one-loop computation of the LFVHD rates and analyze in full detail the predictions as functions of the various relevant ISS parameters, which are required to be compatible with the present neutrino data and the present experimental bounds for the three LFV radiative decays, and also consistent with other constraints, like perturbativity of the neutrino Yukawa couplings. At the end, we conclude on the maximum allowed LFVHD rates within the ISS, which may reach maximal values of order $10^{-5}$ for the $H \to e \bar \tau$ and $H \to \mu \bar \tau$ channels, close to the expected future LHC sensitivities., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures. Taking the supersymmetric inverse seesaw mechanism as the explanation for neutrino oscillation data, we investigate charged lepton flavor violation in radiative and 3-body lepton decays as well as in neutrinoless $\mu-e$ conversion in muonic atoms. In contrast to former studies, we take into account all possible contributions: supersymmetric as well as non-supersymmetric. We take CMSSM-like boundary conditions for the soft supersymmetry breaking parameters. We find several regions where cancellations between various contributions exist, reducing the lepton flavor violating rates by an order of magnitude compared to the case where only the dominant contribution is taken into account. This is in particular important for the correct interpretation of existing data as well as for estimating the reach of near future experiments where the sensitivity will be improved by one to two orders of magnitude. Moreover, we demonstrate that ratios like BR($\tau\to 3 \mu$)/BR($\tau\to \mu e^+ e^-$) can be used to determine whether the supersymmetric contributions dominate over the $W^\pm$ and $H^\pm$ contributions or vice versa., Comment: 75 pages, 7 figures. v3: references and comments added. We present our study of lepton flavour violating decays of a Higgs boson with properties compatible with those of the particle recently discovered at the LHC. We worked in the context of the inverse seesaw model, considering the most generic case where the Standard Model is extended by three pairs of fermionic singlets in order to generate the neutrino masses and mixings required by neutrino oscillations. Using a full one-loop calculation together with the most recent experimental and theoretical constraints, we discuss the dependence on the parameters of the inverse seesaw model before concluding on the largest allowed branching ratios through scans over the full parameter space., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures (7 plots), Proceedings of the Moriond 2014 EW session

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
In this paper we consider a Higgs boson with mass and other properties compatible with those of the recently discovered Higgs particle at the LHC, and explore the possibility of new Higgs leptonic decays, beyond the standard model, with the singular feature of being lepton flavor violating (LFV). We study these LFV Higgs decays, $H \to l_k\bar l_m$, within the context of the inverse seesaw model (ISS) and consider the most generic case where three additional pairs of massive right-handed singlet neutrinos are added to the standard model particle content. We require in addition that the input parameters of this ISS model are compatible with the present neutrino data and other constraints, like perturbativity of the neutrino Yukawa couplings. We present a full one-loop computation of the BR($H \to l_k\bar l_m$) rates for the three possible channels, $l_k\bar l_m=\mu \bar \tau,\, e \bar \tau,\, e \bar \mu$, and analyze in full detail the predictions as functions of the various relevant ISS parameters. We study in parallel the correlated one-loop predictions for the radiative decays, $l_m \to l_k \gamma$, within this same ISS context, and require full compatibility of our predictions with the present experimental bounds for the three radiative decays, $\mu \to e \gamma$, $\tau \to \mu \gamma$, and $\tau \to e \gamma$. After exploring the ISS parameter space we conclude on the maximum allowed LFV Higgs decay rates within the ISS., Comment: 29 pages, 13 figures, 1 table, 1 appendix: v4 matches the manuscript published in PRD

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
We address the impact of a modified $W \ell \nu$ coupling on a wide range of observables, such as $\tau$ leptonic and mesonic decays, leptonic decays of pseudoscalar mesons, as well as semileptonic meson decays. In particular, we concentrate on deviations from lepton flavour universality, focusing on the ratios $R_{P} = \Gamma (P \to \ell \nu) / \Gamma (P \to \ell' \nu)$, with $P=K, \pi, D, D_s$, $R(D)={\Gamma (B^+ \to D \tau^+ \nu)}/{\Gamma (B^+ \to D\ell^+ \nu)}$, $R \tau={\Gamma (\tau\to \mu\nu\nu)}/{\Gamma (\tau\to e\nu\nu)}$, $R^{\ell \tau}_P=\Gamma(\tau\to P\nu)/\Gamma(P\to \ell \nu)$, and $\text{BR}(B \to \tau \nu)$. We further consider leptonic gauge boson decays, such as $W\to \ell \nu $ and $Z \to \nu \nu$. For all the above observables, we provide the corresponding complete analytical expressions, derived for the case of massive neutrinos. Working in the framework of the Standard Model extended by additional sterile fermions, which mix with the active (left-handed) neutrinos, we numerically study the impact of active-sterile mixings on the above mentioned observables., Comment: 31 pages, Latex, 22 figures. High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
We consider a tree-level enhancement to the violation of lepton flavour universality in light meson decays arising from modified $W \ell \nu$ couplings in the standard model minimally extended by sterile neutrinos. Due to the presence of additional mixings between the active (left-handed) neutrinos and the new sterile states, the deviation from unitarity of the leptonic mixing matrix intervening in charged currents might lead to a tree-level enhancement of $R_{P} = \Gamma (P \to e \nu) / \Gamma (P \to \mu \nu)$, with $P=K, \pi$. We illustrate these enhancements in the case of the inverse seesaw model, showing that one can saturate the current experimental bounds on $\Delta r_{K}$ (and $\Delta r_{\pi}$), while in agreement with the different experimental and observational constraints., Comment: 9 pages, 2 eps figures

This work focused its attention on the effect of a low intensity static magnetic field on purified water: more specifically, on how the ultraviolet absorbance and the surface tension of the water may be affected. It has been found that pure water, exposed to a magnetic field for periods of time, does not absorb the ultraviolet radiation in an asymptotic way but shows a local maximum at 15 min. It is also shown that the contact angle of droplets on paraffin can be reduced by up to 5 ° by exposing the water to a 10 mT static magnetic field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Developing vapor phase infiltration (VPI) processes for area selective polymer nanopatterning requires substantial advancement in understanding precursor infiltration, precursor–polymer interaction and process parameters. In this work, infiltration receptive poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP) and poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) brushes were exposed to a trimethylaluminum (TMA) VPI process and compared toa non-receptive polystyrene (PS) system. The interaction that takes place between TMA and P2VP/P4VPwas analysed in detail and we report on notable advantages in the use of P4VP, arising from the difference in position of the pyridinic nitrogen. The VPI process was performed in a commercial atomic layer deposition reactor and the effects of the fundamental process parameters on the three polymer brushes were investigated to ensure optimal area selectivity. In situX-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements were supported by grazing angle Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (GA-FTIR)and hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES). The report identifies several important factors when developing a VPI process to ensure area selectivity, while also demonstrating the use of novel pyridine containing polymers for VPI area selective purposes.
