Abstract A two-dimensional (2D) Weyl semimetal, akin to a spinful variant of graphene, represents a topological matter characterized by Weyl fermion-like quasiparticles in low dimensions. The spinful linear band structure in two dimensions gives rise to distinctive topological properties, accompanied by the emergence of Fermi string edge states. We report the experimental realization of a 2D Weyl semimetal, bismuthene monolayer grown on SnS(Se) substrates. Using spin and angle-resolved photoemission and scanning tunneling spectroscopies, we directly observe spin-polarized Weyl cones, Weyl nodes, and Fermi strings, providing consistent evidence of their inherent topological characteristics. Our work opens the door for the experimental study of Weyl fermions in low-dimensional materials.

Abstract Background and Aims Various inflammatory and immune cytokines play key roles in the progression of hepatitis B virus (HBV)‐related liver cirrhosis (LC). This study explored the relationship between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in cytokines with the combined effect of polymorphisms and gender‐polymorphisms interaction and LC risk. Methods In this study, a case–control design was used, samples were selected from 45 patients with hepatitis B‐related cirrhosis and 45 age‐gender‐matched chronic HBV‐infected patients without cirrhosis attending the tumor hospital of Wuwei Academy of Medical Sciences. Fifteen SNPs were examined using a real‐time polymerase chain reaction allelic discrimination system. Logistic regression was utilized to assess cytokine‐associated SNPs and the association between SNPs and LC progression in HBV‐infected patients. Results The multivariate‐adjusted logistic model revealed that the GG/AG dominant model (OR, 16.38; 95% CI, 1.13–236.70) and G allele (OR, 5.93; 95% CI, 0.98–36.01) of rs1800896 were associated with an increased risk of cirrhosis in CHB patients. Instead, rs2227306 CT presented a reduced cirrhosis risk (OR, 0.22; 95% CI, 0.04–1.38). Rs2055979 AA/AC was negatively associated with the risk of cirrhosis, potentially reversed in males (p = 0.021). Rs1799964 CC/CT was positively related to the risk of cirrhosis but reduced the risk of cirrhosis in males (OR, 0.13; 95% CI, 0.022–0.808; p = 0.028). Both rs1799964 TT and rs1799724 CT/TT genotype showed a synergistic effect in reducing the risk of cirrhosis with rs1800896 AA (OR, 0.08; 95% CI, 0.01–1.43 and OR, 0.12; 95% CI, 0.01–2.21). Conclusion Polymorphisms rs1800896 and rs2227306 are potentially associated with the risk of cirrhosis. For the first time, the study highlights that the rs2055979 AA/AC and rs1799964 CC/CT polymorphism interact with gender and its potential reversal of cirrhosis risk in males. Furthermore, rs1800896 AA showed a synergistic effect with rs1799964 TT and rs1799724 CT/TT to prevent the progression of HBV infection to cirrhosis.

Topological states in two-dimensional materials have garnered significant research attention in recent years, particularly those with intrinsic magnetic orderings, which hold great potential for spintronic applications. Through theoretical calculations, we unveil the superior band topology of monolayer vanadium trihalides, with a specific focus on V2Cl6. These two-dimensional compounds exhibit a half-metallic ferromagnetic ground state, showcasing excellent thermodynamic and mechanical stabilities. Remarkably, clean band crossings with complete spin polarization manifest as phase transitions between Weyl semimetal states and quantum anomalous Hall states under different magnetization directions, and both topological phases yield prominent edge states. Furthermore, Monte Carlo simulations estimate a high Curie temperature of up to 381.3 K, suggesting the potential for spintronic development above room temperature. Taking a step forward, we construct two heterojunctions utilizing selected substrates, MoS2 and h-BN. These substrates not only facilitate a suitable lattice integration but also have a negligible impact on the half-metallicity and band topology. These findings lay the groundwork for exploring practical applications of two-dimensional ferromagnetic topological states. Importantly, the presented material candidates have the potential to accelerate the development of room temperature applications and integrate spintronic devices.

Abstract Topological phonons in crystalline materials have been attracting great interest. Most cases studied so far are direct generalizations of the topological states from electronic systems. Here, we reveal a class of topological phonons - the symmetry-enforced nodal-chain phonons, which manifest the characteristic of phononic systems. We show that in five space groups with D 2d little co-group at a non-time-reversal-invariant-momentum point, the phononic nodal chain is guaranteed to exist owing to the vector basis symmetry of phonons, which is a character distinct from electronic and other systems. In other words, this symmetry enforcement feature of the proposed nodal chain is limited to phononic systems. Interestingly, the chains in these five space groups exhibit two different patterns: for tetragonal systems, they are one-dimensional along the fourfold axis; for cubic systems, they form a three-dimensional network structure. Based on first-principles calculations, we identify K2O as a realistic material hosting the proposed nodal-chain phonons. We show that the effect of LO-TO splitting helps to expose the nodal-chain phonons in a large frequency window. In addition, the nodal chains may lead to drumhead surface phonon modes on multiple surfaces of a sample.

Abstract Metal contacts to two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors are often plagued by the strong Fermi level pinning (FLP) effect which reduces the tunability of the Schottky barrier height (SBH) and degrades the performance of 2D semiconductor devices. Here, we show that MoSi2N4 and WSi2N4 monolayers—an emerging 2D semiconductor family with exceptional physical properties—exhibit strongly suppressed FLP and wide-range tunable SBH. An exceptionally large SBH slope parameter of S ≈ 0.7 is obtained which outperforms the vast majority of other 2D semiconductors. Such intriguing behavior arises from the septuple-layered morphology of MoSi2N4 and WSi2N4 monolayers in which the semiconducting electronic states are protected by the outlying Si–N sublayer. We identify Ti, Sc, and Ni as highly efficient Ohmic contacts to MoSi2N4 and WSi2N4 with zero interface tunneling barrier. Our findings reveal the potential of MoSi2N4 and WSi2N4 as a practical platform for designing high-performance and energy-efficient 2D semiconductor electronic devices.

Background and aimChronic hepatitis B (CHB) can be divided into immune tolerance (IT), immune clearance (IC), hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)-negative inactive/quiescent carrier (ENQ), and HBeAg-negative hepatitis (ENH) phases. The conventional biomarkers used to distinguish these phases have limitations. We examined the clinical significance of hepatitis B virus (HBV) RNA and hepatitis B core-related antigen (HBcrAg) as novel biomarkers.MethodsOne hundred eighty-nine patients without treatment currently were categorized by CHB phase (IT = 46, IC = 45, ENQ = 49, ENH = 49). The associations of HBV RNA and HBcrAg with HBV DNA and alanine transaminase (ALT) were analyzed. The decision tree model was used to distinguish the four phases in the natural course of CHB.ResultsThe concentrations of HBV RNA and HBcrAg were highest in the IT and IC phases (P < 0.01). Serum HBV RNA was similar to HBcrAg in treatment-naïve patients. HBV RNA and HBcrAg correlated with HBV DNA in the HBeAg+ and HBeAg− status (HBV RNA: e+ r = 0.51, e− r = 0.62; HBcrAg: e+ r = 0.51, e− r = 0.71), but their association with HBV DNA differed among phases. The accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of HBcrAg with ALT in distinguishing the CHB phases were 95.65%, 95.83%, and 95.55%, respectively.ConclusionSerum HBV RNA and HBcrAg may be useful to monitor CHB progression.

Metamaterial has been captivated a popular notion, offering photonic functionalities beyond the capabilities of natural materials. Its desirable functionality primarily relies on well-controlled conditions such as structural resonance, dispersion, geometry, filling fraction, external actuation, etc. However, its fundamental building blocks--meta-atoms--still rely on naturally occurring substances. Here, we propose and validate the concept of gradient and reversible atomic-engineered metamaterials (GRAM), which represents a platform for continuously tunable solid metaphotonics by atomic manipulation. GRAM consists of an atomic heterogenous interface of amorphous host and noble metals at the bottom, and the top interface was designed to facilitate the reversible movement of foreign atoms. Continuous and reversible changes in GRAM's refractive index and atomic structures are observed in the presence of a thermal field. We achieve multiple optical states of GRAM at varying temperature and time and demonstrate GRAM-based tunable nanophotonic devices in the visible spectrum. Further, high-efficiency and programmable laser raster-scanning patterns can be locally controlled by adjusting power and speed, without any mask-assisted or complex nanofabrication. Our approach casts a distinct, multilevel, and reversible postfabrication recipe to modify a solid material's properties at the atomic scale, opening avenues for optical materials engineering, information storage, display, and encryption, as well as advanced thermal optics and photonics. Interleukin-18 (IL-18) can effectively activate natural killer (NK) cells and induce large concentrations of interferon-γ (IFN-γ). In healthy humans, IL-18 binding protein (IL-18BP) can inhibit the binding of IL-18 to IL-18R and counteract the biological action of IL-18 due to its high concentration and high affinity, thus preventing the production of IFN-γ and inhibiting NK-cell activation. Through previous studies and the phenomena observed by our group in pig–non-human primates (NHPs) liver transplantation experiments, we proposed that the imbalance in IL-18/IL-18BP expression upon transplantation encourages the activation, proliferation, and cytotoxic effects of NK cells, ultimately causing acute vascular rejection of the graft. In this research, we used Lewis–Brown Norway rat orthotopic liver transplantation (OLTx) as a model of acute vascular rejection. AAV8-Il18bp viral vectors as gene delivery vehicles were constructed for gene therapy to overexpress IL-18BP and alleviate NK-cell rejection of the graft after transplantation. The results showed that livers overexpressing IL-18BP had reduced damage and could function longer after transplantation, effectively improving the survival time of the recipients.

Abstract Background Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based remote sensing provides a flexible, low-cost, and efficient approach to monitor crop growth status at fine spatial and temporal resolutions, and has a high potential to accelerate breeding process and improve precision field management. Method In this study, we discussed the use of lightweight UAV with dual image-frame snapshot cameras to estimate aboveground biomass (AGB) and panicle biomass (PB) of rice at different growth stages with different nitrogen (N) treatments. The spatial–temporal variations in the typical vegetation indices (VIs) and AGB were first investigated, and the accuracy of crop surface model (CSM) extracted from the Red Green Blue (RGB) images at two different stages were also evaluated. Random forest (RF) model for AGB estimation as well as the PB was then developed. Furthermore, variable importance and sensitivity analysis of UAV variables were performed to study the potential of improving model robustness and prediction accuracies. Results It was found that the canopy height extracted from the CSM (Hcsm) exhibited a high correlation with the ground-measured canopy height, while it was unsuitable to be independently used for biomass assessment of rice during the entire growth stages. We also observed that several VIs were highly correlated with AGB, and the modified normalized difference spectral index extracted from the multispectral image achieved the highest correlation. RF model with fusing RGB and multispectral image data substantially improved the prediction results of AGB and PB with the prediction of root mean square error (RMSEP) reduced by 8.33–16.00%. The best prediction results for AGB and PB were achieved with the coefficient of determination (r2), the RMSEP and relative RMSE (RRMSE) of 0.90, 0.21 kg/m2 and 14.05%, and 0.68, 0.10 kg/m2 and 12.11%, respectively. In addition, the result confirmed that the sensitivity analysis could simplify the prediction model without reducing the prediction accuracy. Conclusion These findings demonstrate the feasibility of applying lightweight UAV with dual image-frame snapshot cameras for rice biomass estimation, and its potential for high throughput analysis of plant growth-related traits in precision agriculture as well as the advanced breeding program.

The Fermi arcs, topological surface states of Weyl semimetals can enable the intriguing spin control and facilitate topological spintronics. Here the authors report the spin-orbit torque at the interface of WTe2/Py and attribute it to the enhanced spin accumulation by the spin-momentum locking effect of the Fermi arcs of WTe2.

Remote estimation of flower number in oilseed rape under different nitrogen (N) treatments is imperative in precision agriculture and field remote sensing, which can help to predict the yield of oilseed rape. In this study, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with Red Green Blue (RGB) and multispectral cameras was used to acquire a series of field images at the flowering stage, and the flower number was manually counted as a reference. Images of the rape field were first classified using K-means method based on Commission Internationale de l’Éclairage (CIE) L*a*b* space, and the result showed that classified flower coverage area (FCA) possessed a high correlation with the flower number (r2 = 0.89). The relationships between ten commonly used vegetation indices (VIs) extracted from UAV-based RGB and multispectral images and the flower number were investigated, and the VIs of Normalized Green Red Difference Index (NGRDI), Red Green Ratio Index (RGRI) and Modified Green Red Vegetation Index (MGRVI) exhibited the highest correlation to the flower number with the absolute correlation coefficient (r) of 0.91. Random forest (RF) model was developed to predict the flower number, and a good performance was achieved with all UAV variables (r2 = 0.93 and RMSEP = 16.18), while the optimal subset regression (OSR) model was further proposed to simplify the RF model, and a better result with r2 = 0.95 and RMSEP = 14.13 was obtained with the variable combination of RGRI, normalized difference spectral index (NDSI (944, 758)) and FCA. Our findings suggest that combining VIs and image classification from UAV-based RGB and multispectral images possesses the potential of estimating flower number in oilseed rape.
