Greater knowledge is always an advantage for a rational individual. However, this article shows that for a group of rational individuals greater knowledge can backfire, leading to a worse outcome for all. Surprisingly, this can happen even when new knowledge does not mean the discovery of a new action but simply provides a deeper understanding of the interaction at stake. More specifically, enhanced knowledge about the current state of nature may hinder cooperation among purely self-interested individuals. The paper describes this paradoxical possibility-a 'knowledge curse'-and analyses the evolutionary process that occurs if, initially, only a few people have access to the greater knowledge. Nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) such as mask wearing can be effective in mitigating the spread of infectious diseases. Therefore, understanding the behavioral dynamics of NPIs is critical for characterizing the dynamics of disease spread. Nevertheless, standard infection models tend to focus only on disease states, overlooking the dynamics of "beneficial contagions," e.g., compliance with NPIs. In this work, we investigate the concurrent spread of disease and mask-wearing behavior over multiplex networks. Our proposed framework captures both the competing and complementary relationships between the dueling contagion processes. Further, the model accounts for various behavioral mechanisms that influence mask wearing, such as peer pressure and fear of infection. Our results reveal that under the coupled disease-behavior dynamics, the attack rate of a disease-as a function of transition probability-exhibits a critical transition. Specifically, as the transmission probability exceeds a critical threshold, the attack rate decreases abruptly due to sustained mask-wearing responses. We empirically explore the causes of the critical transition and demonstrate the robustness of the observed phenomena. Our results highlight that without proper enforcement of NPIs, reductions in the disease transmission probability via other interventions may not be sufficient to reduce the final epidemic size.

A long-standing question in biology and economics is whether individual organisms evolve to behave as if they were striving to maximize some goal function. We here formalize this "as if" question in a patch-structured population in which individuals obtain material payoffs from (perhaps very complex multimove) social interactions. These material payoffs determine personal fitness and, ultimately, invasion fitness. We ask whether individuals in uninvadable population states will appear to be maximizing conventional goal functions (with population-structure coefficients exogenous to the individual's behavior), when what is really being maximized is invasion fitness at the genetic level. We reach two broad conclusions. First, no simple and general individual-centered goal function emerges from the analysis. This stems from the fact that invasion fitness is a gene-centered multigenerational measure of evolutionary success. Second, when selection is weak, all multigenerational effects of selection can be summarized in a neutral type-distribution quantifying identity-by-descent between individuals within patches. Individuals then behave as if they were striving to maximize a weighted sum of material payoffs (own and others). This study evaluates putative changes of genetic diversity and relationships of barley in the Nordic and Baltic countries that might have taken place during the last century as a result of commercial breeding. Four ISSR primers were used to analyse 227 accessions, yielding a total of 47 polymorphic loci. Shannon-Weaver diversity values for each locus ranged from 0.012 to 0.693. Overall, there were no significant changes of genetic diversity observed over time. A significant decrease of diversity was, however, observed in material from the southern parts of the Nordic and Baltic countries. In material from the northern parts no decrease of diversity was observed. The genetic diversity of six-rowed barley bred in the middle of the 20th century was low, but there was no significant difference between modern accessions and landraces or old cultivars. The magnitude in changes of genetic diversity differed also in material from different countries of origin. A cluster analysis clearly separated the material into two groups. The first cluster included 86.5% of all six-rowed accessions, whereas the second cluster contained 97.4% of all two-rowed accessions.

Comparisons were made between the free amino acid composition in leaf exudates and that in pure phloem sap, using twin samples taken from a single leaf of two oat (Avena sativa L.) and three barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) varieties. Leaf exudate was collected in a 5 mm EDTA-solution (pH 7.0) from cut leaf blades and phloem sap was obtained through excised aphid (Rhopalosiphum padi L.) stylets. Fluorescent derivatives of amino acids were obtained using 9-fluorenylmethyl chloroformate and were separated by means of high performance liquid chromatography. The total concentration of free amino acids varied considerably in the exudate samples. There was no correlation between the total amino acid content in the exudate samples and that of the corresponding phloem sap samples, but the amino acid composition of the corresponding samples was highly correlated (median R(2)-value 0.848). There was only limited between-plant variation in phloem sap amino acid composition. Nevertheless, in comparisons involving all samples, many of the amino acids showed significant correlations between their relative amounts in exudate and phloem sap. The results presented here indicate that the exudate technique holds great promise as an interesting alternative to the laborious and time-consuming stylet-cutting technique of obtaining samples for comparative studies of phloem sap.
