Osteoporosis is linked to increased bone marrow adipocyte (BMAd) proliferation, which displaces bone-forming cells and alters the local environment. The impact of BMAd lipid droplets on bone health and osteoblast function remains unclear. This study investigates the interplay between BMAd-derived lipid droplets and osteoblast functionality, focusing on ferroptosis pathways. Osteoblast cultures were treated with conditioned media from adipocytes to simulate in vivo conditions. High-throughput mRNA sequencing and Western blot analysis were used to profile changes in gene expression and protein levels related to ferroptosis, oxidative phosphorylation, and osteogenic markers. Cellular assays assessed the direct impact of lipid droplets on osteoblast activity. Results showed that osteoblasts exposed to adipocyte-conditioned media had increased intracellular lipid droplet accumulation, upregulation of ferroptosis-related genes and proteins, and downregulation of oxidative phosphorylation and osteoblast differentiation markers. Treatment with ferroptosis inhibitors reversed the detrimental effects on osteoblasts, indicating the functional relevance of this pathway in osteoporosis. BMAd-derived lipid droplets contribute to osteoblast dysfunction through ferroptosis induction. Inhibiting ferroptosis could preserve osteoblast function and combat osteoporosis-related bone issues, suggesting that modulating lipid metabolism and redox balance in bone cells may be promising for future treatments.

Study Design Retrospective clinical trial. Purpose To establish a morphological classification of the cervical spinal canal using its parameters. Overview of Literature Cervical spine computed tomography (CT) data of 200 healthy volunteers in 2 years were analyzed. The morphology of the spinal cord was also analyzed. Methods The median sagittal diameter and transverse diameter of the spinal canal from C2 to C7 were measured on CT images. The ratio of the median sagittal diameter to the transverse diameter was calculated. Accordingly, the spinal canal shape of each segment was classified into four, and the specific criteria of lunar phase classification were determined through linear discriminant analysis based on the ratio of the median sagittal diameter to the transverse diameter. The inter-rater reliability of the classification was explored using Kappa coefficients. Finally, the morphology of the different segments of the cervical spinal canal in healthy volunteers was revised and compared. Results According to the ratio of the median sagittal diameter and the transverse diameter of the cervical spinal canal, the lunar phase classification of the cervical bony spinal canal was determined as follows: full-moon >0.65, 0.55< convex-moon ≤0.65, 0.46≤ quarter-moon ≤0.55, and residual-moon 0.05). The frequency of the spinal canal of the residual-moon type was the highest, and the full-moon (6.5%) and residual-moon (7.5%) types of C7 were rare. Conclusions The morphological classification of the cervical spinal canal was established to present anatomical variations. The classification showed good inter-rater reliability.

Highlights A transparent, conductive, and flexible metal mesh film has been developed by a low-cost, uniform self-forming crackle template and electroplating strategy. The Cu mesh films show an ultra-low sheet resistance (0.18 Ω □−1), high transmittance (85.8%@550 nm), high figure of merit (> 13,000), excellent stretchability and mechanical stability. The metal mesh film can be used as a flexible heater and electromagnetic interference shielding film (40.4 dB at 2.5 μm).

In thermoelectrics, phase engineering serves a crucial function in determining the power factor by affecting the band degeneracy. However, for low-symmetry compounds, the mainstream one-step phase manipulation strategy, depending solely on the valley or orbital degeneracy, is inadequate to attain a high density-of-states effective mass and exceptional zT. Here, we employ a distinctive two-step phase manipulation strategy through stepwise tailoring chemical bonds in GeSe. Initially, we amplify the valley degeneracy via CdTe alloying, which elevates the crystal symmetry from a covalently bonded orthorhombic to a metavalently bonded rhombohedral phase by significantly suppressing the Peierls distortion. Subsequently, we incorporate Pb to trigger the convergence of multivalence bands and further enhance the density-of-states effective mass by moderately restraining the Peierls distortion. Additionally, the atypical metavalent bonding in rhombohedral GeSe enables a high Ge vacancy concentration and a small band effective mass, leading to increased carrier concentration and mobility. This weak chemical bond along with strong lattice anharmonicity also reduces lattice thermal conductivity. Consequently, this unique property ensemble contributes to an outstanding zT of 0.9 at 773 K for Ge0.80Pb0.20Se(CdTe)0.25. This work underscores the pivotal role of the two-step phase manipulation by stepwise tailoring of chemical bonds in improving the thermoelectric performance of p-bonded chalcogenides. Public summary: • A two-step phase manipulation strategy by tailoring chemical bonds is proposed in GeSe. • CdTe alloying shifts orthorhombic to rhombohedral phase and yields high valley degeneracy. • Adding Pb restrains the Peierls distortion and triggers the valence band convergence. • The metavalently bonded rhombohedral GeSe owns a high power factor and a low thermal conductivity. • A high figure of merit of 0.9 is achieved in rhombohedral Ge0.8Pb0.2Se(CdTe)0.25.

Abstract Background This study aimed to compare the biomechanical differences between anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) with multiple-level separate plates and conventional long plates by using finite element analysis. Methods The following four finite element models were created to simulate various fixations: (1) C4–6 ACDF with multiple plates, (2) C4–6 ACDF with a single plate, (3) C3–6 ACDF with multiple plates, and (4) C3–6 ACDF with a single plate. The maximum Von-mises stress of the cage and fixation, compressive force of the adjacent intervertebral discs and range of motion (ROM) of different segments in the four models were calculated and analyzed. Results For C4–6 ACDF, the maximum Von-mises stress of the cage and fixation was lower in the multiple plate fixation model in all motion states. Similarly, for the C3–6 ACDF models, the peak stress of the C3–4 and C5–6 cages was lower with multiple plates fixation in all motions but the stress of the C4–5 cage in the multiple plates model was slightly higher in flexion, bending and rotation. Besides, applying multiple plates in C3–6 ACDF models resulted in a decreased maximum stress of the fixation under different motions except for bending. In both the C4–6 ACDF and C3–6 ACDF models, the ROM values of the adjacent motion segments were lower in the multiple plates models in extension, bending and rotation. In the C4–6 ACDF models, the peak stress on the adjacent intervertebral discs in the multiple plates models was slightly smaller. In C3–6 ACDF models, the maximum stress on the adjacent intervertebral discs was larger in the single-plate model under flexion, bending and rotation movements. Conclusion Multiple plates fixation has a positive effect on increasing stiffness and maintaining the ROM of adjacent segments, indicating lower risk of construct failure and adjacent segment degeneration. Further studies are required to confirm its efficacy in clinical practice.

Abstract High voltage direct current has been more and more popular in modern transmission systems. Accurate fault location could help fault clearance and fast recovery of the faulted system. A stacked denoising autoencoder based fault location method for high voltage direct current transmission systems is proposed. The local measurements are analysed, and an end‐to‐end stacked denoising autoencoder‐based fault location is realised. Representative features are extracted with unsupervised learning and labelled as the input of the regression network for fine‐tuning in a supervised manner. The trained network can precisely map the local measurements and their corresponding fault distance. The performance of the proposed method is tested on a point‐to‐point high voltage direct current transmission system, which is modelled on the platform of PSCAD/EMTDC. The faults on both overhead lines and cables are considered, and the location performance in different scenarios are discussed. The simulation results show that the proposed method is effective in pinpointing faults location in various cases.

Abstract The serious problems of environmental pollution and energy shortage have pushed the green economy photocatalysis technology to the forefront of research. Therefore, the development of an efficient and environmentally friendly photocatalyst has become a hotpot. In this work, magnetic Fe3O4/C/MnO2/C3N4 composite as photocatalyst was synthesized by combining in situ coating with low-temperature reassembling of CN precursors. Morphology and structure characterization showed that the composite photocatalyst has a hollow core–shell flower-like structure. In the composite, the magnetic Fe3O4 core was convenient for magnetic separation and recovery. The introduction of conductive C layer could avoid recombining photo-generated electrons and holes effectively. Ultra-thin g-C3N4 layer could fully contact with coupled semiconductor. A Z-type heterojunction between g-C3N4 and flower-like MnO2 was constructed to improve photocatalytic performance. Under the simulated visible light, 15 wt% photocatalyst exhibited 94.11% degradation efficiency in 140 min for degrading methyl orange and good recyclability in the cycle experiment.

Apoptosis and calcification of endplate chondrocytes (EPCs) can exacerbate intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD). Mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes (MSC-exosomes) are reported to have the therapeutic potential in IVDD. However, the effects and related mechanisms of MSC-exosomes on EPCs are still unclear. We aimed to investigate the role of MSC-exosomes on EPCs with a tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP)-induced oxidative stress cell model and IVDD rat model. First, our study revealed that TBHP could result in apoptosis and calcification of EPCs, and MSC-exosomes could inhibit the detrimental effects. We also found that these protective effects were inhibited after miroRNA (miR)-31-5p levels were downregulated in MSC-exosomes. The target relationship between miR-31-5p and ATF6 was tested. miR-31-5p negatively regulated ATF6-related endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and inhibited apoptosis and calcification in EPCs. Our in vivo experiments indicated that sub-endplate injection of MSC-exosomes can ameliorate IVDD; however, after miR-31-5p levels were downregulated in MSC-exosomes, these protective effects were inhibited. In conclusion, MSC-exosomes reduced apoptosis and calcification in EPCs, and the underlying mechanism may be related to miR-31-5p/ATF6/ER stress pathway regulation.

Traditional cell lines and xenograft models have been widely recognized and used in research. As a new research model, organoids have made significant progress and development in the past 10 years. Compared with traditional models, organoids have more advantages and have been applied in cancer research, genetic diseases, infectious diseases, and regenerative medicine. This review presented the advantages and disadvantages of organoids in physiological development, pathological mechanism, drug screening, and organ transplantation. Further, this review summarized the current situation of vascularization, immune microenvironment, and hydrogel, which are the main influencing factors of organoids, and pointed out the future directions of development.

Abstract Background Large population-based studies of risk factor for lung metastases at the presentation with primary osseous neoplasms are lacking and necessary. We aim to examine potential risk factors of lung metastases at presentation with primary osseous neoplasms using Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database tool. Methods We collected patients diagnosed with primary osseous neoplasms between 2010 and 2015 from the SEER database. Patients were divided into two groups: patients with lung metastases or patients without lung metastases. Patient characteristics such as age, sex, race, tumor size, histologic types, histologic grade, and lung metastasis were collected. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were applied to determine which characteristics were risk factors for lung metastasis at diagnosis. Results A total of 4459 patients were collected, and 507 patients had lung metastases at presentation. Data on age, race, gender, primary site, grade, tumor size, and histology types were enrolled into the multivariate logistic analysis. Higher grade (OR = 5.197, 95% CI 3.328 to 8.117), histology type (Ewing sarcoma: OR = 1.432, 95% CI 1.020 to 2.009; osteosarcoma: OR = 1.597, 95% CI, 1.073 to 2.377), and larger tumor size (≥ 5 cm: OR = 3.528, 95% CI 2.370 to 5.251) were associated with an increased risk of lung metastasis at presentation. Conclusion Histology types (osteosarcoma and Ewing sarcoma) were related to a higher risk of lung metastases in primary osseous neoplasms patients. Patients with osteosarcoma and lager tumors or higher tumor grade were associated with higher possibility of lung metastases. Patients with Ewing sarcoma and larger tumors have more tendency of lung metastases. These patients are supposed to receive chest CT scans at the presentation with primary osseous neoplasms.

Polyurea is widely used as a protective coating material for structures subjected to impulsive loads. In this study, the mechanical properties of polyurea were investigated experimentally over a wide range of loading rates. Firstly, quasi-static tests were performed using conventional hydraulic machine at strain rates of 7.7 × 10−4 - 7.3 × 10−3 s−1 for direct tension and at speeds of 1.67 × 10−5 - 1.67 × 10−4 m/s for puncture. Then high-speed tests were carried out using a high-speed servo-hydraulic testing machine (INSTRON VHS 160/100-20) at strain rates of 3.3–500.3 s−1 for direct tension and at speeds of 0.1–10 m/s for puncture. Deformation and failure processes of the polyurea specimens under high-speed tension were recorded with the aid of a high-speed camera. The testing results show that polyurea is a strain rate sensitive material. Under tensile loads, the initial yield stress and the strength increase with the increment of the strain rates while the fracture strain decreases. Under puncture loads, the yield force and the strength of the polyurea sheets also increase with loading rates. However, the strain rate effect on the failure deformation of the polyurea is only observed when the loading rate is less than 2 m/s. Based on the testing data, mechanism that causes the dynamic effect of polyurea material properties was discussed and some empirical relations were derived for engineering applications.

One-dimensional (1D) microwave absorbing materials (MAMs) can induce self-assembly of graphene into aerogels, which provides ideas for the preparation of new MAMs. In here, 3D flower-like Fe3O4@SiO2@MnO2@reduced graphene oxide (RGO) (FSMG) composite aerogels have been fabricated via hydrothermal method, in which 1D Fe3O4@SiO2 (FS) nanochains and two-dimensional (2D) MnO2 sheets form a nano-scale core-shell structure on the surface of the RGO nanosheets. The unique microstructure of aerogels greatly enhances the microwave absorption capability. Particularly, the addition of RGO regulates the complex permittivity and improves the impedance matching of 1D Fe3O4@SiO2@MnO2 (FSM) nanochains. Results demonstrate that the well-designed 3D conductive networks with significant oxygen vacancy defects powerfully favor the electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption. The as-prepared FSMG composite aerogels show efficient microwave absorption (MA) properties with the maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 4.26 GHz (7.13–11.39 GHz) at the corresponding coating thickness of 3.2 mm, accompanied by the minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of about −55.01 dB. This work indicates that the FSMG composite aerogels are excellent absorbers with wide bandwidth, strong absorption, thin thickness and light weight, which can become a hopeful candidate in the field of MA. Stand-off free layer damping is a vibration reduction method based on the traditional free layer damping. In this paper, a stand-off free layer damping cantilever beam is prepared with the steel plate as the base layer, rigid polyurethane (PU) foam as the stand-off layer, and rubber as the damping layer, and the motion equation of the cantilever beam is derived. The dynamic mechanical properties of damping rubber and PU foam are tested and analyzed. Through hammering tests, we have studied the effect of the density and thickness of the PU foam layer on the amplitude-frequency curves, modal frequencies, and loss factors of the cantilever beams. The results show that the rubber damping material is a major font of energy dissipation of the cantilever beam, and PU foam acts mainly to expand the deformation of the damping layer and plays a role in energy consumption. By increasing the density and thickness of PU foam within a certain range, the vibration peaks of the first five modes of the cantilever beam decreases gradually, the loss factors rise, and the damping performance is improved. Meanwhile, increased density and thickness enhances the overall stiffness of the beam, making the modal frequencies get higher.

The online system state initialization and simultaneous spatial-temporal calibration are critical for monocular Visual-Inertial Odometry (VIO) since these parameters are either not well provided or even unknown. Although impressive performance has been achieved, most of the existing methods are designed for filter-based VIOs. For the optimization-based VIOs, there is not much online spatial-temporal calibration method in the literature. In this paper, we propose an optimization-based online initialization and spatial-temporal calibration method for VIO. The method does not need any prior knowledge about spatial and temporal configurations. It estimates the initial states of metric-scale, velocity, gravity, Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) biases, and calibrates the coordinate transformation and time offsets between the camera and IMU sensors. The work routine of the method is as follows. First, it uses a time offset model and two short-term motion interpolation algorithms to align and interpolate the camera and IMU measurement data. Then, the aligned and interpolated results are sent to an incremental estimator to estimate the initial states and the spatial–temporal parameters. After that, a bundle adjustment is additionally included to improve the accuracy of the estimated results. Experiments using both synthetic and public datasets are performed to examine the performance of the proposed method. The results show that both the initial states and the spatial-temporal parameters can be well estimated. The method outperforms other contemporary methods used for comparison.

Recent technological developments in modular multilevel converter-based high-voltage direct current (MMC-HVDC) transmission systems have shown significant advantages over the traditional HVDC and two-level voltage source converter (VSC) transmission systems. However, there are a lack of studies on the protection methods for MMC-HVDC overhead lines where the protection method should be able to provide a fast and accurate response and be able to identify lightning strikes. In this paper, a wavelet entropy-based protection method is proposed. Due to the capability of revealing time–frequency distribution features, the proposed protection method combines wavelet and entropy to identify the time–frequency characteristics of different faults. Simulation results show that the proposed method can accurately and quickly determine the types of faults or disturbances with appropriate noise tolerance. In addition, the impact of the ground resistor and fault distance on the performance of the proposed method is studied.

Using Complete Coverage Path Planning (CCPP), a cleaning robot could visit every accessible area in the workspace. The dynamic environment requires the higher computation of the CCPP algorithm because the path needs to be replanned when the path might become invalid. In previous CCPP methods, when the neighbours of the current position are obstacles or have been visited, it is challenging for the robot to escape from the deadlocks with the least extra time cost. In this study, a novel CCPP algorithm is proposed to deal with deadlock problems in a dynamic environment. A priority template inspired by the short memory model could reduce the number of deadlocks by giving the priority of directions. Simultaneously, a global backtracking mechanism guides the robot to move to the next unvisited area quickly, taking the use of the explored global environmental information. What's more, the authors extend their CCPP algorithm to a multi-robot system with a market-based bidding process which could deploy the coverage time. Experiments of apartment-like scenes show that the authors’ proposed algorithm can guarantee an efficient collision-free coverage in dynamic environments. The proposed method performs better than related approaches on coverage rate and overlap length.
