Purpose This paper aims to establish the predictive equations of height, area and volume of printed solder paste during solder paste stencil printing (SPSP) process in surface mount technology (SMT) to better understand the effect of process parameters on the printing quality. Design/methodology/approach An experiment plan is proposed based on the response surface method (RSM). Experiments with 30 different combinations of process parameters are performed using a solder paste printer. After printing, the volume, area and height of the printed SAC105 solder paste are measured by a solder paste inspection machine. Using RSM, the predictive equations associated with the printing parameters and the printing quality of the solder paste are formed. Findings The optimal printing parameters are 175.08 N printing pressure, 250 mm/s printing speed, 0.1 mm snap-off height and 15.7 mm/s stencil snap-off speed if the target height of solder paste is 100 µm. As the target printing area of solder paste is 1.1 mm × 1.3 mm, the optimized values of the printing parameters are 140.29 N, 100.52 mm/s, 0.63 mm and 20.25 mm/s. When both the target printing height and area are optimized together, the optimal values for the four parameters are 86.67 N, 225.76 mm/s, 0.15 mm and 1.82 mm/s. Originality/value A simple RSM-based experimental method is proposed to formulate the predictive polynomial equations for height, area and volume of printed solder paste in terms of important SPSP parameters. The predictive equation model can be applied to the actual SPSP process, allowing engineers to quickly predict the best printing parameters during parameter setting to improve production efficiency and quality.

The distribution and diffusion of water molecules are playing important roles in determining self-assembly and transport properties of polymeric systems. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation have been applied to understand the distribution of water molecules and their dynamics in the lamellar membrane formed by Pluronic L62 block copolymers. Penetration of water molecules into the polyethylene oxide (PEO) layers of the membranes has been estimated using scattering length density (SLD) profiles obtained from SANS measurements, which agree well with the molecular distribution observed from MD simulations. The water diffusion coefficient at different regions of the lamellar membrane was further investigated using MD simulation. The diffusion characteristic shows a transition from normal to anomalous diffusion as the position of the water molecule changes from the bulk to PEO and to the polypropylene oxide (PPO) layer. We find that water molecules within the PEO or PPO layers follow subdiffusive dynamics, which can be interpreted by the model of fractional Brownian motion.

CENTAUR has been selected as one of the eight initial instruments to be built at the Second Target Station (STS) of the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. It is a small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and wide-angle neutron scattering (WANS) instrument with diffraction and spectroscopic capabilities. This instrument will maximally leverage the high brightness of the STS source, the state-of-the-art neutron optics, and a suite of detectors to deliver unprecedented capabilities that enable measurements over a wide range of length scales with excellent resolution, measurements on smaller samples, and time-resolved investigations of evolving structures. Notably, the simultaneous WANS and diffraction capability will be unique among neutron scattering instruments in the United States. This instrument will provide much needed capabilities for soft matter and polymer sciences, geology, biology, quantum condensed matter, and other materials sciences that need in situ and operando experiments for kinetic and/or out-of-equilibrium studies. Beam polarization and a high-resolution chopper will enable detailed structural and dynamical investigations of magnetic and quantum materials. CENTAUR’s excellent resolution makes it ideal for low-angle diffraction studies of highly ordered large-scale structures, such as skyrmions, shear-induced ordering in colloids, and biomembranes. Additionally, the spectroscopic mode of this instrument extends to lower momentum transfers than are currently possible with existing spectrometers, thereby providing a unique capability for inelastic SANS studies.

Understanding the dynamics of soft colloids, such as star polymers, dendrimers, and microgels, is of scientific and practical importance. It is known that the excluded volume effect plays a key role in colloidal dynamics. Here, we propose a condition of compressibility equivalence that provides a simple method to experimentally evaluate the excluded volume of soft colloids from a thermodynamic view. We apply this condition to survey the dynamics of a series of star polymer dispersions. It is found that as the concentration increases, the slowing of the long-time self-diffusivity of the star polymer, normalized by the short-time self-diffusivity, can be mapped onto the hard-sphere behavior. This phenomenon reveals the dynamic equivalence between soft colloids and hard spheres, despite the apparent complexity of the interparticle interaction of the soft colloids. This work presents scattering functions of conjugates consisting of a colloid particle and a self-avoiding polymer chain as a model for protein–polymer conjugates and nanoparticle–polymer conjugates in solution. The model is directly derived from the two-point correlation function with the inclusion of excluded volume effects. The dependence of the calculated scattering function on the geometric shape of the colloid and polymer stiffness is investigated. The model is able to describe the experimental scattering signature of the solutions of suspending hard particle–polymer conjugates and provide additional conformational information. This model explicitly elucidates the link between the global conformation of a conjugate and the microstructure of its constituent components.

We have used neutron scattering to investigate the influence of concentration on the conformation of a star polymer. By varying the contrast between the solvent and the isotopically labeled stars, we obtain the distributions of polymer and solvent within a star polymer from analysis of scattering data. A correlation between the local desolvation and the inward folding of star branches is discovered. From the perspective of thermodynamics, we find an analogy between the mechanism of polymer localization driven by solvent depletion and that of the hydrophobic collapse of polymers in solutions.

Structural studies of wormlike micelles have so far mostly focused on the conformational properties of surfactant aggregates. The diffuse ionic atmosphere, which has a profound influence on various micellization phenomena such as thermodynamic stability and structural polymorphism, remains largely unexplored experimentally. In this report a strategy of contrast variation small-angle neutron scattering for this crucial structural study is outlined. Underlined by a general criterion established for unbiasedly identifying the length scale relevant to charge association from the spectral evolution, our analytical framework can provide a quantitative description of counterion distribution in a mathematically tractable manner. Our method can be conveniently extended to facilitate structural studies of complex multicomponent systems using contrast variation neutron scattering.

We outline a machine learning strategy for quantitively determining the conformation of AB-type diblock copolymers with excluded volume effects using small angle scattering. Complemented by computer simulations, a correlation matrix connecting conformations of different copolymers according to their scattering features is established on the mathematical framework of a Gaussian process, a multivariate extension of the familiar univariate Gaussian distribution. We show that the relevant conformational characteristics of copolymers can be probabilistically inferred from their coherent scattering cross sections without any restriction imposed by model assumptions. This work not only facilitates the quantitative structural analysis of copolymer solutions but also provides the reliable benchmarking for the related theoretical development of scattering functions.

Automatic fingerspelling recognition aims to overcome communication barriers between people who are deaf and those who can hear. RGB-D cameras are widely used to handle finger occlusion, which usually hinders fingerspelling recognition. However, color-depth misalignment, which is an intrinsic property of RGB-D cameras, hinders the simultaneous processing of color and depth images in the absence of intrinsic parameters of the camera. Furthermore, fine-grained hand gestures performed by various persons and captured from multiple views render the discriminative feature extraction difficult, due to intra-class variability and inter-class similarity. Inspired by the human visual mechanism, we propose a network to learn discriminative features related to fine-grained hand gestures while suppressing the effect of color–depth misalignment. Unlike existing approaches that independently process RGB-D images, a dual-path depth-aware attention network that learns a fingerspelling representation in separate RGB and depth paths, and progressively fuses the features learned from the two paths is proposed. As the hand is usually the closest object to the camera, depth information can contribute to emphasize the key fingers related to a letter sign. Thus, we develop a depth-aware attention module (DAM) to exploit spatial relations in the depth feature maps, refining the RGB and depth feature maps across a bottleneck structure. The module establishes a lateral connection of the RGB and depth paths and provides a depth-aware salient map to both paths. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed network improved the accuracy (+0.83%) and $F$ score (+1.55%) compared to state-of-the-art methods on a publicly available fingerspelling dataset. The visualization of the network processes demonstrates that the DAM facilitates the selection of representative hand regions from the RGB-D images. Furthermore, the number of parameters and computational overhead of the DAM are negligible in the network. The code is available at https://github.com/cweizen/cweizen-DDaNet_model_master .

We outline a nonparametric inversion strategy for determining the orientation distribution function (ODF) of sheared interacting rods using small-angle scattering techniques. With the presence of direct inter-rod interaction and fluid mechanical forces, the scattering spectra are no longer characterized by the azimuthal symmetry in the coordinates defined by the principal directions of simple shear conditions, which severely compounds the reconstruction of ODFs based on currently available methods developed for dilute systems. Using a real spherical harmonic expansion scheme, the real-space ODFs are uniquely determined from the anisotropic scattering spectra and their numerical accuracy is verified computationally. Our method can be generalized to extract ODFs of uniaxially anisotropic objects under different flow conditions in a properly transformed reference frame with suitable basis vectors.

Electrostatic interparticle interactions are a key component in controlling and designing the rheological characteristics of concentrated charged colloidal suspensions. Herein, we investigate electroviscous effects on shear rheology using highly charged silica particles. By fixing the volume fraction but varying the salinity, the system undergoes a glass transition as evidenced by the evolution of the yield stress and zero-shear viscosity. We show that the steady shear viscosities obey a critical scaling relation that scales the flow curves into a supercritical branch and a subcritical branch with glass transition salinity serving as the bifurcation point; we also demonstrate an isoviscosity scaling that collapses all isoviscosity lines into a single master curve that exhibits no singularity. On the basis of each scaling relation, in conjunction with common modeling equations, the quantitative relationships between the shear viscosity, stress, and salinity are established. This study demonstrates a new framework to model the steady shear rheology of concentrated charged colloids.

The bending vibration behavior of a non-uniform axially functionally graded Euler-Bernoulli beam is investigated based on the Chebyshev collocation method. The cross-sectional and material properties of the beam are assumed to vary continuously across the axial direction. The Chebyshev differentiation matrices are used to reduce the ordinary differential equations into a set of algebraic equations to form the eigenvalue problem associated with the free vibration. Some calculated results are compared with numerical results in the published literature to validate the accuracy of the present model. A good agreement is observed. The effects of the taper ratio, volume fraction index, and restraint types on the natural frequency of axially functionally graded beams with non-uniform cross section are examined.

This paper studies the parametric instability of hybrid nanocomposite plates under an arbitrary periodic load in thermal environments. The hybrid nanocomposite plate is a three-layer board. It has metal layers on both surfaces and one core reinforced with functionally graded (FG) carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The Galerkin method with a reduced eigenfunction transformation is applied to establish the governing equations of motion. According to the Bolotin method, a set of Mathieu-type differential equations is formed to determine dynamic instability regions and dynamic instability index (DII). The in-plane periodic stress is taken to be a combination of pulsating axial and bending stresses in the example problems. The effects of the layer thickness ratio, CNTs volume fraction, CNTs distribution type, temperature, bending stress, static and dynamic load on the dynamic instability of hybrid nanocomposite plates are investigated and discussed.

We report on the rheology of isotropic and nematic aqueous solutions of a sulfonated all-aromatic polyamide, poly(2,2′-disulfonyl-4,4′-benzidine terephthalamide) (PBDT), that forms high-aspect-ratio rod-like assemblies. For quiescently isotropic solutions, the concentration dependence of the zero-shear viscosity, longest relaxation time, and terminal modulus shows deviations in comparison to the Doi-Edwards theory for hard rods. For quiescently nematic solutions, we characterize the flow behavior through steady-state and transient nonlinear rheological measurements in conjunction with small-angle neutron scattering under shear. The steady-state flow curve is characterized by two anomalous shear thickening responses, one at moderate shear rates and the other immediately prior to flow alignment at high shear rates. We assign the origin of these shear thickening response to director “kayaking” and “out-of-plane steady” states, using predictions from prior high-resolution numerical simulations of sheared nematic rods. Utilizing transient shear flow reversals and step-down experiments, we characterize the oscillatory response of the nematic director through these flow regimes. When the first normal stress difference is plotted versus the shear stress during a transient step-down, the so-called dynamic stress path, the counterclockwise versus clockwise rotation has previously been shown to reveal the relative dominance of viscous versus elastic contributions to the stress tensor, respectively. Our measurements strongly suggest that the anomalous shear thickening behavior in nematic PBDT solutions arises from viscous stresses developed as the ensemble of rods undergoes periodic oscillatory motion under shear, rather than elastic stresses due to broadening of the orientational distribution function.

The influence of lithium chloride (LiCl) on the hydration structure of anionic micelles of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in water was studied using the contrast-variation small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) technique. In the past, extensive computational studies have shown that the distribution of invasive water plays a critical role in the self-organization of SDS molecules and the stability of the assemblies. However, in past scattering studies the degree of the hydration level was not examined explicitly. Here, a series of contrast-variation SANS data was analyzed to extract the intramicellar radial distributions of invasive water and SDS molecules from the evolving spectral lineshapes caused by the varying isotopic ratios of water. By addressing the intramicellar inhomogeneous distributions of water and SDS molecules, a detailed description of how the counterion association influences the micellization behavior of SDS molecules is provided. The extension of our method can be used to provide an in-depth insight into the micellization phenomenon, which is commonly found in many soft matter systems.

Small angle scattering (SAS) is a widely used technique for characterizing structures of wide ranges of materials. For such wide ranges of applications of SAS, there exist a large number of ways to model the scattering data. While such analysis models are often available from various suites of SAS data analysis software packages, selecting the right model to start with poses a big challenge for beginners to SAS data analysis. Here, we present machine learning (ML) methods that can assist users by suggesting scattering models for data analysis. A series of one-dimensional scattering curves have been generated by using different models to train the algorithms. The performance of the ML method is studied for various types of ML algorithms, resolution of the dataset, and the number of the dataset. The degree of similarities among selected scattering models is presented in terms of the confusion matrix. The scattering model suggestions with prediction scores provide a list of scattering models that are likely to succeed. Therefore, if implemented with extensive libraries of scattering models, this method can speed up the data analysis workflow by reducing search spaces for appropriate scattering models.

The ultimate goal of gifted education programs is to cultivate students’ competences through challenging, enriching, and engaging opportunities for talent development. The purpose of this review is to present two main approaches of enrichment programs for gifted learners in Taiwan: the programs following the law and the alternative programs initiated by local authorities, private organizations, and researchers. The rationale and practice of program evaluation are also discussed to analyze Taiwan’s gifted education program logics and qualities to reflect on the development of these programs. Finally, the prospects of program design and evaluation are proposed: (a) defining the criteria for success or effectiveness, (b) selecting or developing valid and reliable measurement tools and strategies, (c) conducting long-term evaluation plans and follow-up studies, and (d) promoting evidence-based decision-making in gifted education.

Mitochondrial fission plays a role in cardiovascular calcification. Melatonin has previously been shown to protect against cardiovascular disease, so this study sought to explore whether it attenuates vascular calcification by regulating mitochondrial fission via the AMP‐activated protein kinase/dynamin‐related protein 1 (AMPK/Drp1) signalling pathway. The effects of melatonin on vascular calcification were investigated in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). Calcium deposits were visualized by Alizarin red staining, while calcium content and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity were used to evaluate osteogenic differentiation. Western blots were used to measure the expression of runt‐related transcription factor 2 (Runx2), Drp1 and cleaved caspase 3. Melatonin markedly reduced calcium deposition and ALP activity. Runx2 and cleaved caspase 3 were down‐regulated, Drp1 was reduced in response to melatonin, and this was accompanied by decreased apoptosis. Melatonin also reduced levels of mitochondrial superoxide, reversed β‐glycerophosphate (β‐GP)‐induced ΔΨm dissipation and decreased mitochondrial fragmentation. The effects of melatonin in β‐GP‐treated VSMCs were similar to those of mitochondrial division inhibitor 1. Melatonin significantly activated the expression of AMPK and decreased Drp1 expression. Treatment with compound C ablated the observed benefits of melatonin treatment. These findings indicate that melatonin protects VSMCs against calcification by inhibiting mitochondrial fission via the AMPK/Drp1 pathway.
