Search

Sustainable processes for semi-hydrogenation of alkynes/alkadienes impurities in alkenes feedstocks are in great demand in industry as the utilization of excessive hydrogen, high temperature and unsatisfactory alkenes selectivity of the current thermo-catalytic route, however, their development is still challenging. Herein, we innovate a light-assisted semi-hydrogenation process in gas-feed fixed bed reactor, with water as hydrogen atom source by in situ photocatalysis. Using Pd/TiO2 as model catalyst, this process shows an excellent catalytic performance for the semi-hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene, with 100 % of butenes selectivity at ≈99 % of conversion over 180 h of reaction at ambient temperature driven by 66 mW cm−2 of irradiation intensity. This light-driven, H2-free, ambient temperature semi-hydrogenation process, with superior performance to that of thermocatalytic route, shows attractive to bring an evolution in industrial hydrogenation technology to an economical and safe way.

We confine our interest to the O2O (online-to-offline) supply chain system consisting of an online retailer and an offline retailer. Given that the brand they sell may encounter a brand crisis that will damage the goodwill, we formulate an O2O supply chain model with the impact of random crisis to explore the countermeasures of retailers when facing a potential crisis. After analysis, we find the following: (1) The crisis happened earlier with the increase of hazard rate and retailers should lower their investment in the precrisis stage. (2) The existence of crisis divides the whole planning period into two phases and make retailers have different phase preference in different scenarios. In a word, retailers will pay more attention to the postcrisis stage with the increase of hazard rate and damage rate and therefore invest more in the postcrisis stage. (3) Crisis will decrease the investment level of retailers and therefore make the goodwill and profits lower than when there is no crisis.

The Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Strategic Survey is the latest-generation multi-band optical imaging survey for galaxy evolution and structure formation. The "Ultra-Deep" component of the HSC survey provides $grizy$ broad-band images over $\sim3.4$ deg$^2$ to detection limits of $\sim26$-28 AB, along with narrow-band images, in the COSMOS and the SXDS fields. These images provide an unprecedented combination of depths and area coverage, for the studies galaxies up to $z\sim7$. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of microwave drying on the protein quality of japonica sorghum following an intermittent drying test. Using label-free technology and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry for proteomic analysis, the effects of microwave drying on sorghum differential protein expression, functional classification, and metabolic pathways were analyzed at the molecular level. After sorghum was dried using a microwave, 85 differential proteins were identified. Among them, 51 showed up-regulated expression while 34 had down-regulated expression. The up-regulation and down-regulation of differential protein expressions significantly changed them, and proteins with larger up-regulated and down-regulated expressions were postulated to affect biological and metabolic processes of sorghum during subsequent processing. Differential proteins were significantly (P ˂ 0.01) involved in metabolic pathways, such as carbon metabolism, glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, carbon fixation in photosynthetic organisms, biosynthesis of amino acids, amino sugar and nucleotide sugar metabolism, and the TCA cycle. For the protein interaction network, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase of the down-regulated proteins was postulated to be the key factor affecting the entire metabolic system or signal transduction pathway. Up-regulated proteins, including phosphoglycerate mutase and phosphopyruvate hydratase, as well as down-regulated proteins such as glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase and fructose-bisphosphate aldolase, not only directly or indirectly affected a variety of metabolic processes, but were specifically closely related to glycolysis and glycometabolism. Overall, this study showed that among the related metabolic pathways, differential protein changes in glycometabolism pathways may have the greatest impact on metabolic processes. The research results discussed herein can provide theoretical support for the industrial application of microwave drying and deep processing of sorghum.

Submillimetre galaxies represent a rapid growth phase of both star formation and massive galaxies. Mapping SMGs in galaxy protoclusters provides key insights into where and how these extreme starbursts take place in connections with the assembly of the large-scale structure in the early Universe. We search for SMGs at 850$\,\mu m$ using JCMT/SCUBA-2 in two massive protoclusters at $z=2.24$, BOSS1244 and BOSS1542, and detect 43 and 54 sources with $S_{850}>4\,$mJy at the $4\sigma$ level within an effective area of 264$\,$arcmin$^2$, respectively. We construct the intrinsic number counts and find that the abundance of SMGs is $2.0\pm0.3$ and $2.1\pm0.2$ times that of the general fields, confirming that BOSS1244 and BOSS1542 contain a higher fraction of dusty galaxies with strongly enhanced star formation. The volume densities of the SMGs are estimated to be $\sim15-$30 times the average, significantly higher than the overdensity factor ($\sim 6$) traced by H$\alpha$ emission-line galaxies (HAEs). More importantly, we discover a prominent offset between the spatial distributions of the two populations in these two protoclusters -- SMGs are mostly located around the high-density regions of HAEs, and few are seen inside these regions. This finding may have revealed for the first time the occurrence of violent star formation enhancement in the outskirts of the HAE density peaks, likely driven by the boosting of gas supplies and/or starburst triggering events. The phenomenon of acoustic waves inducing electric fields in porous media is called the seismoelectric effect. Earlier investigators proposed the usage of seismoelectric effect for well logging. Soil texture has a strong influence on the coupled wave fields during shallow surface explorations. In this article, we study the borehole pure shear‐horizontal wave and the coupling transverse‐electric field (acoustic–electrical coupling wave fields) in the partially saturated soil. Combined with related theories, we expand the formation parameters to partially saturated forms and discuss the influence of soil texture conditions on the seismoelectric wave fields. The results show that the elastic and electrical properties of porous media are sensitive to water saturation. The compositions of the acoustic and electric fields for different soil textures do not change, but the waveforms differ. We also use the secant integral method to simulate the interface‐converted electromagnetic waves. The results show that interface response strength is greatly influenced by soil texture. In addition, considering the sensitivity of the inducing electric field to fluid salinity, we also simulate the time‐domain waveforms of electric field for different pore fluid salinity levels. The results show that as the salinity increases, the electric field amplitude decreases monotonically. The above conclusions have certain significance for the application of borehole shear wave and its coupled electric fields for resource exploration, saturation assessment and groundwater pollution monitoring.

We report morphological analyses of seven submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) at z ∼ 2 using the James Webb Space Telescope NIRCam images taken as part of the public CEERS and PRIMER surveys. Through two-dimensional surface brightness profile fitting we find evidence of compact reddened stellar structures in all the SMGs, in particular in the F444W filter, suggesting an ubiquitous presence of stellar bulges. The median size of these bulges at F444W with a bootstrapped uncertainty is found to be 0.7 ± 1.0 kpc (0.6–0.7–3.9 kpc for 14th–50th–86th percentiles) and the median Sérsic index is 0.7 ± 0.9 (0.4–0.7–2.8 for 14th–50th–86th percentiles). Structures akin to spiral arms and bars are also identified, and their asymmetric shapes, tidal features, as well as evidence of nearby galaxies at consistent redshifts as those of corresponding SMGs suggest that these SMGs are undergoing dynamical interactions, likely responsible for the triggering of their star-forming activity. Via a curve-of-growth analysis we deduce half-light radii for the NIRCam wave bands, finding that sizes are significantly smaller at longer wavelengths in all cases, in particular that the median size ratio between F444W and F150W is 0.6 ± 0.1. However, we also find that F444W sizes, roughly corresponding to rest-frame H band, are not smaller than those of submillimeter continuum as measured by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, contradicting certain recent predictions from theoretical models. Our results suggest that while stellar bulges are undergoing an active formation phase in SMGs at z ∼ 2, the total stellar masses of SMGs are still dominated by their disks, not bulges.

We use machine learning techniques to investigate their performance in classifying active galactic nuclei (AGNs), including X-ray selected AGNs (XAGNs), infrared selected AGNs (IRAGNs), and radio selected AGNs (RAGNs). Using known physical parameters in the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) field, we are able to well-established training samples in the region of Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey. We compare several Python packages (e.g., scikit-learn, Keras, and XGBoost), and use XGBoost to identify AGNs and show the performance (e.g., accuracy, precision, recall, F1 score, and AUROC). Our results indicate that the performance is high for bright XAGN and IRAGN host galaxies. The combination of the HSC (optical) information with the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) band-1 and WISE band-2 (near-infrared) information perform well to identify AGN hosts. For both type-1 (broad-line) XAGNs and type-1 (unobscured) IRAGNs, the performance is very good by using optical to infrared information. Context. The properties of galaxies at redshift z > 6 hold the key to our understanding of the early stages of galaxy evolution and can potentially identify the sources of the ultraviolet radiation that give rise to the epoch of reionisation. The far-infrared cooling line of [C II] at 158 μm is known to be bright and correlate with the star formation rate (SFR) of low-redshift galaxies, and hence is also suggested to be an important tracer of star formation and interstellar medium properties for very high-redshift galaxies. Aims. With the aim to study the interstellar medium properties of gravitationally lensed galaxies at z > 6, we search for [C II] and thermal dust emission in a sample of 52 z ∼ 6 galaxies observed by the ALMA Lensing Cluster Survey. Methods. We perform our analysis using LINESTACKER, stacking both [C II] and continuum emission. The target sample is selected from multiple catalogues, and the sample galaxies have spectroscopic redshift or low-uncertainty photometric redshifts (σz Results. Our analyses find no detection of either [C II] or continuum. An upper limit on L[CII] is derived, implying that [C II] remains marginally consistent for low-SFR z > 6 galaxies but likely is under-luminous compared to the local L[CII]-SFR relationship. We discuss potential biases and possible physical effects that may be the cause of the non-detection. Further, the upper limit on the dust continuum implies that less than half of the star formation is obscured.

Our current knowledge of cosmic star-formation history during the first two billion years (corresponding to redshift z >3) is mainly based on galaxies identified in rest-frame ultraviolet light. However, this population of galaxies is known to under-represent the most massive galaxies, which have rich dust content and/or old stellar populations. This raises the questions of the true abundance of massive galaxies and the star-formation-rate density in the early universe. Although several massive galaxies that are invisible in the ultraviolet have recently been confirmed at early epochs, most of them are extreme starbursts with star-formation rates exceeding 1000 solar masses per year, suggesting that they are unlikely to represent the bulk population of massive galaxies. Here we report submillimeter (wavelength 870um) detections of 39 massive star-forming galaxies at z > 3, which are unseen in the spectral region from the deepest ultraviolet to the near-infrared. With a space density of about $2 \times 10^{-5}$ per cubic megaparsec (two orders of magnitudes higher than extreme starbursts) and star-formation rates of 200 solar masses per year, these galaxies represent the bulk population of massive galaxies that have been missed from previous surveys. They contribute a total star-formation-rate density ten times larger than that of equivalently massive ultraviolet-bright galaxies at z >3. Residing in the most massive dark matter halos at their redshifts, they are probably the progenitors of the largest present-day galaxies in massive groups and clusters. Non-standard fields are assumed to be responsible for phenomena attributed to dark energy and dark matter. Being coupled to ordinary matter, these fields modify the masses and/or charges of the elementary particles, thereby violating the Weak Equivalence Principle. Thus, values of fundamental constants such as the proton-to-electron mass ratio, mu, and/or the fine structure constant, alpha, measured in different environment conditions can be used as probes for this coupling. Here we perform differential measurements of F = mu*alpha^2 to test a non-standard coupling in the Magellanic Clouds - dwarf galaxies where the overall mass budget is dominated by dark matter. The analysis is based on [CI] and CO lines observed with the Herschel Space Observatory. Since these lines have different sensitivities to changes in mu and alpha, the combined alpha and mu variations can be evaluated through the radial velocity offsets, Delta V, between the CO and [CI] lines. Averaging over nine positions in the Magellanic Clouds, we obtain = -0.02+/-0.07 km/s, leading to |Delta F/F| < 2*10^-7 (1sigma), where Delta F/F = (F_obs-F_lab)/F_lab}. However, for one position observed with five times higher spectral resolution we find Delta V = -0.05+/-0.02 km/s, resulting in Delta F/F = (-1.7+/-0.7)*10^-7. Recent progress in submillimetre surveys by single-dish telescopes allows us to further challenge the consistency between cosmological simulations and observations. In particular, we compare our simulations that include dust formation and destruction with the recent SCUBA-2 surveys (`STUDIES') by putting emphases on basic observational properties of dust emission such as dust temperature, size of infrared (IR)-emitting region, IR luminosity function and IRX--$\beta$ relation. After confirming that our models reproduce the local galaxy properties, we examine the STUDIES sample at $z\approx 1-4$, finding that the simulation reproduces the aforementioned quantities except for the $z\gtrsim 2$ IR luminosity function at the massive end ($\sim 10^{13}$ L$_{\odot}$). This means that the current simulation correctly reproduces the overall scaling between the size and luminosity (or star formation rate) of dusty region, but lacks extreme starburst phenomena at $z\gtrsim 2$. We revisit the correlation between the mid-infrared (6 $\mu$m) and hard X-ray (2--10 keV) luminosities of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) to understand the physics behind it. We construct an X-ray flux-limited sample of 571 type 1 AGNs with $f_{0.5-2.0 \,{\rm keV}} > 2.4 \times 10^{-12}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, drawn from the ROSAT Bright Survey catalog. Cross-matching the sample with infrared data taken from Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, we investigate the relation between the rest-frame 6 $\mu$m luminosity ($L_{\rm 6}$) and the rest-frame 2--10 keV luminosity ($L_{\rm X}$), where $L_{\rm 6}$ is corrected for the contamination of host galaxies by using the spectral energy distribution fitting technique. We confirm that $L_{\rm 6}$ and $L_{\rm X}$ are correlated over four orders of magnitude, in the range of $L_{\rm X} = 10^{42-46}$ erg s$^{-1}$. We investigate what kinds of physical parameters regulate this correlation. We find that $L_{\rm X}$/$L_{\rm 6}$ clearly depends on the Eddington ratio ($\lambda_{\rm Edd}$) as $\log \lambda_{\rm Edd} = -(0.56 \pm 0.10) \log \, (L_{\rm X}/L_{\rm 6}) - (1.07 \pm 0.05)$, even taking into account quasars that are undetected by ROSAT as well as those detected by XMM-Newton in the literature. We also add hyper-luminous quasars with $L_{\rm 6}$ $>$ 10$^{46}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in the literature and perform a correlation analysis. The resultant correlation coefficient is $-0.41 \pm 0.07$, indicating a moderately tight correlation between $L_{\rm X}$/$L_{\rm 6}$ and $\lambda_{\rm Edd}$. This means that AGNs with high Eddington ratios tend to have lower X-ray luminosities with respect to the mid-infrared luminosities. This paper aims to evaluate Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) insurance values through regime-switching models. We separate periods of the economy with faster growth from those with slower growth to observe long-term trends in the economy. We derive a fair PBGC insurance pricing formula under distress termination and intervention termination using regime-switching processes. We set parameters by estimating the S&P 500 index and one-year treasury bills via expectation maximization particle swarm optimization (EM-PSO)-Gradient, which is an extension of the EM-Gradient method. Then, we conduct sensitivity analysis to investigate the impact of model parameters on insurance values. According to the maximum likelihood estimation results, the Akaike information criterion (AIC) and Bayesian information criterion (BIC) estimators show that the regime-switching process has better goodness of fit than the geometric Brownian motion. Scenario analysis also supports the adequacy of our pricing formula.

We examine the robustness of the color-color selection of quiescent galaxies (QGs) against contamination of dusty star-forming galaxies using the latest submillimeter data. We selected 18,304 QG candidates out to $z\sim$ 3 using the commonly adopted $NUV-r-J$ selection based on the high-quality multi-wavelength COSMOS2015 catalog. Using extremely deep 450 and 850 $\mu$m catalogs from the latest JCMT SCUBA-2 Large Programs, S2COSMOS, and STUDIES, as well as ALMA submillimeter, VLA 3 GHz, and $Spitzer$ MIPS 24 $\mu$m catalogs, we identified luminous dusty star-forming galaxies among the QG candidates. We also conducted stacking analyses in the SCUBA-2 450 and 850 $\mu$m images to look for less-luminous dusty galaxies among the QG candidates. By cross-matching to the 24 $\mu$m and 3 GHz data, we were able to identify a sub-group of "IR-radio-bright" QGs who possess a strong 450 and 850 $\mu$m stacking signal. The potential contamination of these luminous and less-luminous dusty galaxies accounts for approximately 10% of the color-selected QG candidates. In addition, there exists a spatial correlation between the luminous star-forming galaxies and the QGs at a $\lesssim60$ kpc scale. Wide-field sub-millimetre surveys have driven many major advances in galaxy evolution in the past decade, but without extensive follow-up observations the coarse angular resolution of these surveys limits the science exploitation. This has driven the development of various analytical deconvolution methods. In the last half a decade Generative Adversarial Networks have been used to attempt deconvolutions on optical data. Here we present an autoencoder with a novel loss function to overcome this problem in the sub-millimeter wavelength range. This approach is successfully demonstrated on Herschel SPIRE 500$\mu$m COSMOS data, with the super-resolving target being the JCMT SCUBA-2 450$\mu$m observations of the same field. We reproduce the JCMT SCUBA-2 images with high fidelity using this autoencoder. Some studies suggest that the dust temperatures ($T_\mathrm{d}$) in high-redshift ($z\gtrsim 5$) Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) are high. However, possible observational bias in $T_\mathrm{d}$ is yet to be understood. Thus, we perform a simple test using random realizations of LBGs with various stellar masses, dust temperatures, and dust-to-stellar mass ratios, and examine how the sample detected by ALMA is biased in terms of $T_\mathrm{d}$. We show that ALMA tends to miss high-$T_\mathrm{d}$ objects even at total dust luminosity. LBGs are, however, basically selected by the stellar UV luminosity. The dust-temperature bias in a UV-selected sample is complicated because of the competing effects between high $T_\mathrm{d}$ and low dust abundance. For ALMA Band 6, there is no tendency of high-$T_\mathrm{d}$ LBGs being more easily detected in our experiment. Thus, we suggest that the observed trend of high $T_\mathrm{d}$ in $z\gtrsim 5$ LBGs is real. We also propose that the 450 $\mu$m band is useful in further clarifying the dust temperatures. To overcome the current shallowness of 450 $\mu$m observations, we examine a future Antarctic 30-m class telescope with a suitable atmospheric condition for wavelengths $\lesssim 450~\mu$m, where the detection is not confusion-limited. We find that, with this telescope, an $L_\mathrm{IR}$-selected sample with $\log(L_\mathrm{IR}/\mathrm{L}_{\odot})>11$ is constructed for $z\gtrsim 5$, and detection in the intermediate-$M_\star$ (stellar mass) range [$9, Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a survey of the molecular gas in 61 submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) selected from 870$\mu$m continuum surveys of the COSMOS, UDS and ECDFS fields, using the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) and the Northern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA). 46 $^{12}$CO ($J=$2-5) emission lines are detected in 45 of the targets at $z=$1.2-4.8, with redshifts indicating that those which are submillimetre bright and undetected/faint in the optical/near-infrared typically lie at higher redshifts, with a gradient of $\Delta z/\Delta S_{870}=$0.11$\pm$0.04mJy$^{-1}$. We also supplement our data with literature sources to construct a statistical CO spectral line energy distribution and find the $^{12}$CO line luminosities in SMGs peak at $J_{\rm up}\sim$6, consistent with the Cosmic Eyelash, among similar studies. Our SMGs lie mostly on or just above the main sequence, displaying a decrease in their gas depletion timescales $t_{\rm dep} = M_{\rm gas}/{\rm SFR}$ with redshift in the range $z\sim$1-5 and a median of 200$\pm$50Myr at $z\sim$2.8. This coincides with an increase in molecular gas fraction $\mu_{\rm gas} = M_{\rm gas}/M_\ast$ across the same redshift range. Finally we demonstrate that the $M_{\rm baryon}$-$\sigma$ distribution of our SMGs is consistent with that followed by early-type galaxies in the Coma cluster, providing strong support to the suggestion that SMGs are progenitors of massive local spheroidal galaxies. On the basis of this we suggest that the SMG populations above and below an 870-$\mu$m flux limit of $S_{870}\sim$5mJy may correspond to the division between slow- and fast-rotators seen in local early-type galaxies., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS

We make use of the ALMA twenty-Six Arcmin2 survey of GOODS-S At One-millimeter (ASAGAO), deep 1.2 mm continuum observations of a 26-arcmin2 region in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey-South (GOODS-S) obtained with Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA), to probe dust-enshrouded star formation in K-band selected (i.e., stellar mass selected) galaxies, which are drawn from the FourStar Galaxy Evolution Survey (ZFOURGE) catalog. Based on the ASAGAO combined map, which was created by combining ASAGAO and ALMA archival data in the GOODS-South field, we find that 24 ZFOURGE sources have 1.2 mm counterparts with a signal-to-noise ratio >4.5 (1σ ≃ 30–70 μJy beam−1 at 1.2 mm). Their median redshift is estimated to be zmedian = 2.38 ± 0.14. They generally follow the tight relationship of the stellar mass versus star formation rate (i.e., the main sequence of star-forming galaxies). ALMA-detected ZFOURGE sources exhibit systematically larger infrared (IR) excess (IRX ≡ LIR/LUV) compared to ZFOURGE galaxies without ALMA detections even though they have similar redshifts, stellar masses, and star formation rates. This implies the consensus stellar-mass versus IRX relation, which is known to be tight among rest-frame-ultraviolet-selected galaxies, cannot fully predict the ALMA detectability of stellar-mass-selected galaxies. We find that ALMA-detected ZFOURGE sources are the main contributors to the cosmic IR star formation rate density at z = 2–3.

Genetic changes in juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML) determine distinct subtypes, treatments, and outcomes. JMML with germline CBL mutation and somatic NRAS mutation possibly achieves spontaneous remission, but hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is indicated for other subtypes of JMML. We hereby report a child with JMML harboring a germline CBL mutation (c.1111T>C) and an NF1 variant (c.3352A>G) concurrently. After evaluation, we considered that the NF1 variant was not the major contributor. After one year of observation, this case had no signs of disease progression. This case highlights the importance of combining available evidence and clinical findings in caring for patients with unusual genomic variations.

We analyze an extremely deep 450 μm image (1σ = 0.56 mJy beam−1) of a sime300 arcmin2 area in the CANDELS/COSMOS field as part of the Sub-millimeter Common User Bolometric Array-2 Ultra Deep Imaging EAO Survey. We select a robust (signal-to-noise ratio ≥4) and flux-limited (≥4 mJy) sample of 164 submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) at 450 μm that have K-band counterparts in the COSMOS2015 catalog identified from radio or mid-infrared imaging. Utilizing this SMG sample and the 4705 K-band-selected non-SMGs that reside within the noise level ≤1 mJy beam−1 region of the 450 μm image as a training set, we develop a machine-learning classifier using K-band magnitude and color–color pairs based on the 13-band photometry available in this field. We apply the trained machine-learning classifier to the wider COSMOS field (1.6 deg2) using the same COSMOS2015 catalog and identify a sample of 6182 SMG candidates with similar colors. The number density, radio and/or mid-infrared detection rates, redshift and stellar-mass distributions, and the stacked 450 μm fluxes of these SMG candidates, from the S2COSMOS observations of the wide field, agree with the measurements made in the much smaller CANDELS field, supporting the effectiveness of the classifier. Using this SMG candidate sample, we measure the two-point autocorrelation functions from z = 3 down to z = 0.5. We find that the SMG candidates reside in halos with masses of sime(2.0 ± 0.5) × 1013 h −1 M ☉ across this redshift range. We do not find evidence of downsizing that has been suggested by other recent observational studies.

We present the result of a search for orphan Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) afterglows in the Pan-STARRS1 (PS1) COSMOS survey. There is extensive theoretical and observational evidence suggesting that GRBs are collimated jets; the direct observation of orphan GRB afterglows would further support this model. An optimal survey strategy is designed by coupling the PS1 survey with the Subaru/Hyper-Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey. The PS1 COSMOS survey, one of the survey fields in the PS1 Medium Deep Survey (PS1/MDS), searches a field of 7 deg$^2$ from December 2011 to January 2014, reaching a limiting magnitude R $\sim$ 23. The dense cadence of PS1/MDS is crucial for identifying transients, and the deep magnitude reached by the HSC survey (R $\sim$ 26) is important for evaluating potential GRB hosts. A transient classification method is employed to select potential orphan GRB afterglow candidates. After a thorough analysis of the transient and host galaxy properties, we conclude that there are no candidates in this survey field. We present an ALMA study of the ~180 brightest sources in the SCUBA-2 map of the COSMOS field from the S2COSMOS survey, as a pilot study for AS2COSMOS - a full survey of the ~1,000 sources in this field. In this pilot we have obtained 870-um continuum maps of an essentially complete sample of the brightest 182 sub-millimetre sources (S_850um=6.2mJy) in COSMOS. Our ALMA maps detect 260 sub-millimetre galaxies (SMGs) spanning a range in flux density of S_870um=0.7-19.2mJy. We detect more than one SMG counterpart in 34+/-2 per cent of sub-millimetre sources, increasing to 53+/-8 per cent for SCUBA-2 sources brighter than S_850um>12mJy. We estimate that approximately one-third of these SMG-SMG pairs are physically associated (with a higher rate for the brighter secondary SMGs, S_870um>3mJy), and illustrate this with the serendipitous detection of bright [CII] 157.74um line emission in two SMGs, AS2COS0001.1 & 0001.2 at z=4.63, associated with the highest significance single-dish source. Using our source catalogue we construct the interferometric 870um number counts at S_870um>6.2mJy. We use the extensive archival data of this field to construct the multiwavelength spectral energy distribution of each AS2COSMOS SMG, and subsequently model this emission with MAGPHYS to estimate their photometric redshifts. We find a median photometric redshift for the S_870um>6.2mJy AS2COSMOS sample of z=2.87+/-0.08, and clear evidence for an increase in the median redshift with 870-um flux density suggesting strong evolution in the bright-end of the 870um luminosity function., Submitted to MNRAS, comments welcome. We report the discovery of a Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) galaxy group at z=4.32 lensed by the massive galaxy cluster ACT-CL J0102-4915 (aka El Gordo) at z=0.87, associated with a 1.2 mm source which is at a 2.07+/-0.88 kpc projected distance from one of the group galaxies. Three images of the whole system appear in the image plane. The 1.2 mm source has been detected within the Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array (ALMA) Lensing Cluster Survey (ALCS). As this ALMA source is undetected at wavelengths lambda < 2 microns, its redshift cannot be independently determined, however, the three lensing components indicate that it belongs to the same galaxy group at z=4.32. The four members of the MUSE galaxy group have low to intermediate stellar masses (~ 10^7-10^{10} Msun) and star formation rates (SFRs) of 0.4-24 Msun/yr, resulting in high specific SFRs (sSFRs) for two of them, which suggest that these galaxies are growing fast (with stellar-mass doubling times of only ~ 2x10^7 years). This high incidence of starburst galaxies is likely a consequence of interactions within the galaxy group, which is compact and has high velocity dispersion. Based on the magnification-corrected sub-/millimetre continuum flux density and estimated stellar mass, we infer that the ALMA source is classified as an ordinary ultra-luminous infrared galaxy (with associated dust-obscured SFR~200-300 Msun/yr) and lies on the star-formation main sequence. This reported case of an ALMA/MUSE group association suggests that some presumably isolated ALMA sources are in fact signposts of richer star-forming environments at high redshifts., 13 pages including 7 figures and 1 table. We analyse the physical properties of 121 SNR $\geq$ 5 sub-millimetre galaxies (SMGs) from the STUDIES 450-$\mu$m survey. We model their UV-to-radio spectral energy distributions using MAGPHYS+photo-$z$ and compare the results to similar modelling of 850-$\mu$m-selected SMG sample from AS2UDS, to understand the fundamental physical differences between the two populations at the observed depths. The redshift distribution of the 450-$\mu$m sample has a median of $z$ = 1.85 $\pm$ 0.12 and can be described by strong evolution of the far-infrared luminosity function. The fainter 450-$\mu$m sample has $\sim$14 times higher space density than the brighter 850-$\mu$m sample at $z$ $\lesssim$2, and a comparable space density at $z$ = 2-3, before rapidly declining, suggesting LIRGs are the main obscured population at $z$ $\sim$ 1-2, while ULIRGs dominate at higher redshifts. We construct rest-frame $\sim$ 180-$\mu$m-selected and dust-mass-matched samples at $z$ = 1-2 and $z$ = 3-4 from the 450-$\mu$m and 850-$\mu$m samples, respectively, to probe the evolution of a uniform sample of galaxies spanning the cosmic noon era. Using far-infrared luminosity, dust masses and an optically-thick dust model, we suggest that higher-redshift sources have higher dust densities due to inferred dust continuum sizes which are roughly half of those for the lower-redshift population at a given dust mass, leading to higher dust attenuation. We track the evolution in the cosmic dust mass density and suggest that the dust content of galaxies is governed by a combination of both the variation of gas content and dust destruction timescale., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures, MNRAS accepted

We present ALMA 870um and JCMT SCUBA2 850um dust continuum observations of a sample of optically dark and strongly lensed galaxies in the cluster fields. The ALMA and SCUBA2 observations reach a median rms of about 0.11 mJy and 0.44 mJy, respectively, with the latter close to the confusion limit of the data at 850um. This represents one of the most sensitive searches for dust emission in optically dark galaxies. We detect the dust emission in 12 out of 15 galaxies at >3.8 sigma, corresponding to a detection rate of 80 per cent. Thanks to the gravitational lensing, our observations reach a deeper limiting flux than previous surveys in blank fields by a factor of 3. We estimate delensed infrared luminosities in the range log(LIR)=11.5-12.7 Lsun, which correspond to dust-obscured star formation rates (SFRs) of 30 to 520 Msun per year. Stellar population fits to the optical-to-NIR photometric data yield a median redshift z=4.26 and de-lensed stellar mass log(Mstar)=10.78 Msun. They contribute a lensing-corrected star-formation rate density at least an order of magnitude higher than that of equivalently massive UV-selected galaxies at z>3. The results suggest that there is a missing population of massive star-forming galaxies in the early Universe, which may dominate the SFR density at the massive end. Five optically dark galaxies are located within r99.974% from Poisson statistics. Functionalization of synthetic suede materials with excellent superhydrophobicity can expand their application ranges. Superhydrophobic synthetic suede was obtained by coating with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS). Utilizing the synthetic suede effect of the fibrous rough structures in combination with the low surface energy micro–nano rough structure on fibers resulting from PDMS and OTS, the surface was easily turned superhydrophobic with self-cleaning properties. Abrasion tests showed that the superhydrophobic synthetic suede has excellent superhydrophobic performance after more than 2000 severe abrasion tests. This research provides a facile strategy for the preparation of practical superhydrophobic synthetic suede materials.

We construct a SCUBA-2 450-$\mu$m map in the COSMOS field that covers an area of 300 arcmin$^{2}$ and reaches a 1$\sigma$ noise level of 0.65 mJy in the deepest region. We extract 256 sources detected at 450 $\mu$m with signal-to-noise ratio $>$ 4.0 and analyze the physical properties of their multi-wavelength counterparts. We find that most of the sources are at $z\lesssim3$, with a median of $z = 1.79^{+0.03}_{-0.15}$. About $35^{+32}_{-25}$% of our sources are classified as starburst galaxies based on their total star-formation rates (SFRs) and stellar masses ($M_{\ast}$). By fitting the far-infrared spectral energy distributions, we find that our 450-$\mu$m-selected sample has a wide range of dust temperatures (20 K $ \lesssim T_{\rm d} \lesssim$ 60 K), with a median of ${T}_{\rm d} = 38.3^{+0.4}_{-0.9}$ K. We do not find a redshift evolution in dust temperature for sources with $L_{\rm IR}$ > $10^{12}$ $\rm L_\odot$ at $z $10^{12}$ $\rm L_\odot$ population to the SFR density rises dramatically from $z$ = 0 to 2 ($\propto$ ($1+z$)$^{3.9\pm1.1}$) and dominates the total SFR density at $z \gtrsim 2$., Comment: Published in the ApJ
