Abstract Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is a frequent neurological complication encountered during the perioperative period with unclear mechanisms and no effective treatments. Recent research into the pathogenesis of POCD has primarily focused on neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, changes in neural synaptic plasticity and neurotransmitter imbalances. Given the high-energy metabolism of neurons and their critical dependency on mitochondria, mitochondrial dysfunction directly affects neuronal function. Additionally, as the primary organelles generating reactive oxygen species, mitochondria are closely linked to the pathological processes of neuroinflammation. Surgery and anesthesia can induce mitochondrial dysfunction, increase mitochondrial oxidative stress, and disrupt mitochondrial quality-control mechanisms via various pathways, hence serving as key initiators of the POCD pathological process. We conducted a review on the role and potential mechanisms of mitochondria in postoperative cognitive dysfunction by consulting relevant literature from the PubMed and EMBASE databases spanning the past 25 years. Our findings indicate that surgery and anesthesia can inhibit mitochondrial respiration, thereby reducing ATP production, decreasing mitochondrial membrane potential, promoting mitochondrial fission, inducing mitochondrial calcium buffering abnormalities and iron accumulation, inhibiting mitophagy, and increasing mitochondrial oxidative stress. Mitochondrial dysfunction and damage can ultimately lead to impaired neuronal function, abnormal synaptic transmission, impaired synthesis and release of neurotransmitters, and even neuronal death, resulting in cognitive dysfunction. Targeted mitochondrial therapies have shown positive outcomes, holding promise as a novel treatment for POCD.

Abstract Predicting the backbone torsion angles corresponding to each residue of a protein from its amino acid sequence alone is a challenging problem in computational biology. Existing torsion angle predictors mainly use profile features, which are generated by performing time-consuming multiple sequence alignments, for torsion angle prediction. Compared with traditional profile features, embedding features from pretrained protein language models have significant advantages in prediction performance and computational speed. However, embedding features usually have higher dimensions and different embedding features have significantly different dimensions. To this end, we design a novel parameter-efficient deep torsion angle predictor, PHAngle, specifically for embedding features. PHAngle is a parameterized hypercomplex convolutional network consisting of parameterized hypercomplex linear and convolutional layers whose weight parameters can be characterized as the sum of Kronecker products. Experimental results on six benchmark test sets including TEST2016, TEST2018, TEST2020_HQ, CASP12, CASP13 and CASP-FM demonstrate that PHAngle achieves the state-of-the-art torsion angle performance with the fewest parameters compared to the nine existing methods. Abstract RNA methylation is an important regulatory process to determine immune cell function but how it affects the anti-tumor activity of CD8 T cells is not fully understood. Here we show that the N 6-methyladenosine (m6A) RNA reader YTHDF2 is highly expressed in early effector or effector-like CD8 T cells. We find that YTHDF2 facilitates nascent RNA synthesis, and m6A recognition is fundamental for this distinctively nuclear function of the protein, which also reinforces its autoregulation at the RNA level. Loss of YTHDF2 in T cells exacerbates tumor progression and confers unresponsiveness to PD-1 blockade in mice and in humans. In addition to initiating RNA decay that is necessary for mitochondrial fitness, YTHDF2 orchestrates chromatin changes that promote T cell polyfunctionality. YTHDF2 interacts with IKZF1/3, which is important for sustained transcription of their target genes. Accordingly, immunotherapy-induced efficacy could be largely restored in YTHDF2-deficient T cells through combinational use of IKZF1/3 inhibitor lenalidomide in a mouse model. Thus, YTHDF2 coordinates epi-transcriptional and transcriptional networks to potentiate T cell immunity, which could inform therapeutic intervention.

SiCp/Al composite materials are widely used due to their lightweight and high strength. There is no systematic study on the effect of variation of Cu content on the mechanical properties of composites. In order to study the effect of Cu content on the properties of composites, SiCp/Al composites with Cu content of 0.35–4 wt% were designed and prepared with the assistance of the CALPHAD method. The samples were sintered between 570 and 620 °C. The microstructures and mechanical properties of the composites were systematically studied. The results show that the sample with a Cu content of 2.45 wt% and a sintering temperature of 590 °C achieved a maximum tensile strength of 314 MPa, which is different from the Cu composition widely used in the literature. For practical use, the relationship between the optimum sintering temperature and the Cu content, liquidus temperature and solidus temperature was studied. In order to explore ingredients with better performance, machine learning was applied. The database containing information including material compositions, preparation process, and mechanical properties was constructed, and then four machine learning models were applied to establish the quantitative relationship of ''component-process-performance'' in SiCp/Al composite materials. The RFReg model was selected as the best model and used to design the composition and process parameters of the composite alloy. A new composite was designed by the machine learning models. The sintered tensile strength was 349 MPa, and the strength reached 561 MPa after hot pressing and heat treatment.

Abstract Background Soybean seeds are rich in protein and oil. The selection of varieties that produce high-quality seeds has been one of the priorities of soybean breeding programs. However, the influence of improved seed quality on the rhizosphere microbiota and whether the microbiota is involved in determining seed quality are still unclear. Here, we analyzed the structures of the rhizospheric bacterial communities of 100 soybean varieties, including 53 landraces and 47 modern cultivars, and evaluated the interactions between seed quality traits and rhizospheric bacteria. Results We found that rhizospheric bacterial structures differed between landraces and cultivars and that this difference was directly related to their oil content. Seven bacterial families (Sphingomonadaceae, Gemmatimonadaceae, Nocardioidaceae, Xanthobacteraceae, Chitinophagaceae, Oxalobacteraceae, and Streptomycetaceae) were obviously enriched in the rhizospheres of the high-oil cultivars. Among them, Oxalobacteraceae (Massilia) was assembled specifically by the root exudates of high-oil cultivars and was associated with the phenolic acids and flavonoids in plant phenylpropanoid biosynthetic pathways. Furthermore, we showed that Massilia affected auxin signaling or interfered with active oxygen-related metabolism. In addition, Massilia activated glycolysis pathway, thereby promoting seed oil accumulation. Conclusions These results provide a solid theoretical basis for the breeding of revolutionary soybean cultivars with desired seed quality and optimal microbiomes and the development of new cultivation strategies for increasing the oil content of seeds. In China and other developing countries, some bicycle riders exhibit retrograde behaviour, which affects the riding safety of normal cyclists. The effect of retrograde behaviour on visual search and cycling behaviours of normal cyclists is investigated and quantified in this study. First, cyclists are instructed to wear an SMI iView ETG head-mounted mobile eye tracker and a mobile phone equipped with a Global Positioning System real-time location monitoring function to cycle on a road to obtain the times of fixation, saccade and blink, as well as the pupil diameter, gaze position and velocity in normal and retrograde conditions. Subsequently, the effect of retrograde behaviour on the attention of normal cyclists is analysed using three indexes: proportion of fixation time, coefficient of variation of pupil diameter and area of interest. Then, the effect of cycling behaviour is analysed using three indexes: the cycling trajectory, the velocity at three stages and the coefficient of variation of velocity. Finally, polynomial regression analysis is performed to analyse the visual and cycling behaviour impact indexes under the retrograde condition. The results show that retrograde behaviour significantly affects the vision and cycling behaviour of normal cyclists and that the two indexes are positively correlated.

Based on the “unidirectional break-up and convergence” geodynamic model, this study investigates the impact of the evolution of the Tethyan domain on the formation of petroleum systems in the Sichuan super basin and explores the enrichment pattern of natural gas. The results show that, firstly, the Sichuan Basin and its surrounding areas have experienced two unidirectional rifting-aggregation cycles triggered by the Proto-Tethys Ocean and the Paleo-Tethys Ocean during the Neoproterozoic to Triassic. During Jurassic–Cenozoic, the Sichuan Basin is incorporated in the circum-Tibetan plateau basin-mountain coupled tectonic domain system. The episodic tectonic movements within the plate control the sedimentary infill styles. Second, the evolution of the Tethyan domain, paleoclimatic environment and major geological events controlled the formation and distribution of high-quality source rocks within the basin. The rift valley and intracratonic rift, passive continental margin slope, and intracratonic sags are favorable areas for the development of source rocks. Third, the evolution of the Tethyan domain, supercontinent cycles, global sea level changes, and tectono-climatic events controlled the distribution of carbonate platform and reservoir-caprock combinations. The cratonic platform margins and sub-platform internal high terrains are key areas for finding carbonate high-energy facies belts. Syndepositional paleo-uplifts and surrounding slopes, regional unconformities, and later faults zone are areas where large-scale carbonate reservoirs are distributed. The regional evaporite or shale caprock are beneficial for the large-scale preservation of oil and gas in the basin. Fourth, the spatio-temporal matching relationship of reservoir forming factors influenced by the early tectonic-sedimentary evolution pattern and the degree of later tectonic modification is the key to oil and gas enrichment. Future oil and gas exploration should focus on potential gas systems during the Sinian rift period, Cambrian pre-salt gas systems in the eastern and southern Sichuan, as well as whole oil and gas systems of Permian and Triassic.

Abstract The influenza neuraminidase (NA) is a potential target for the development of a next-generation influenza vaccine, but its antigenicity is not well understood. Here, we isolate an anti-N6 human monoclonal antibody, named 18_14D, from an H5N6 avian influenza virus (AIV) infected patient. The antibody weakly inhibits enzymatic activity but confers protection in female mice, mainly via ADCC function. The cryo-EM structure shows that 18_14D binds to a unique epitope on the lateral surface of the N6 tetramer, preventing the formation of tightly closed NA tetramers. These findings contribute to the molecular understanding of protective immune responses to NA of AIVs in humans and open an avenue for the rational design of NA-based vaccines.

Abstract This study aims to broaden the morphological scope of SDH-deficient renal cell carcinoma and to assist clinicians and pathologists in better understanding this entity to prevent misdiagnosis. This study used immunohistochemistry staining and the first-generation sequencing Sanger method for gene detection. It retrospectively analysed the clinical pathology, molecular characteristics, biological behaviour, and treatment information of one case of SDH-deficient renal cell carcinoma. The patient was a 57-year-old female with right back pain for more than 20 days and had no personal or family history of kidney tumours. In addition, the tumour cells had clear boundaries in morphology, and residual normal renal tubules could be seen around them. There were also ossification and adipose tissue around the tumour centre. The tumour cells were arranged in a glandular tubular and cord-like manner. Vacuolar and eosinophilic inclusion bodies could be observed in the cytoplasm. The nucleus was regular, the chromatin distribution was fine, and there were no obvious nucleoli. They were low-grade nuclei. In addition, no atypical mitosis or necrosis could been found. Furthermore, immunohistochemistry staining showed SDHB-negative and keratin 20 -positive tumour. Meanwhile, the first-generation sequencing also pointed out the presence of SDHB gene mutations in the tumour. After 12 months of follow-up, there was no evidence of disease recurrence in the patient. SDH-deficient renal cell carcinoma is a rare tumour associated with SDH gene germline mutations, and suspected cases should undergo SDHB immunohistochemistry staining. Most SDH-deficient renal cell carcinomas have a good prognosis, but undifferentiated cases require long-term follow-up.

Abstract Background Accurately classifying primary bone tumors is crucial for guiding therapeutic decisions. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines recommend multimodal images to provide different perspectives for the comprehensive evaluation of primary bone tumors. However, in clinical practice, most patients’ medical multimodal images are often incomplete. This study aimed to build a deep learning model using patients’ incomplete multimodal images from X-ray, CT, and MRI alongside clinical characteristics to classify primary bone tumors as benign, intermediate, or malignant. Methods In this retrospective study, a total of 1305 patients with histopathologically confirmed primary bone tumors (internal dataset, n = 1043; external dataset, n = 262) were included from two centers between January 2010 and December 2022. We proposed a Primary Bone Tumor Classification Transformer Network (PBTC-TransNet) fusion model to classify primary bone tumors. Areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity were calculated to evaluate the model’s classification performance. Results The PBTC-TransNet fusion model achieved satisfactory micro-average AUCs of 0.847 (95% CI: 0.832, 0.862) and 0.782 (95% CI: 0.749, 0.817) on the internal and external test sets. For the classification of benign, intermediate, and malignant primary bone tumors, the model respectively achieved AUCs of 0.827/0.727, 0.740/0.662, and 0.815/0.745 on the internal/external test sets. Furthermore, across all patient subgroups stratified by the distribution of imaging modalities, the PBTC-TransNet fusion model gained micro-average AUCs ranging from 0.700 to 0.909 and 0.640 to 0.847 on the internal and external test sets, respectively. The model showed the highest micro-average AUC of 0.909, accuracy of 84.3%, micro-average sensitivity of 84.3%, and micro-average specificity of 92.1% in those with only X-rays on the internal test set. On the external test set, the PBTC-TransNet fusion model gained the highest micro-average AUC of 0.847 for patients with X-ray + CT. Conclusions We successfully developed and externally validated the transformer-based PBTC-Transnet fusion model for the effective classification of primary bone tumors. This model, rooted in incomplete multimodal images and clinical characteristics, effectively mirrors real-life clinical scenarios, thus enhancing its strong clinical practicability.

Abstract The purpose of this study is to develop a nomogram model for early prediction of the severe mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (SMPP) in Pediatric and Adult Patients. A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients with MPP, classifying them into SMPP and non-severe MPP (NSMPP) groups. A total of 550 patients (NSMPP 374 and SMPP 176) were enrolled in the study and allocated to training, validation cohorts. 278 patients (NSMPP 224 and SMPP 54) were retrospectively collected from two institutions and allocated to testing cohort. The risk factors for SMPP were identified using univariate analysis. For radiomic feature selection, Spearman’s correlation and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) were utilized. Logistic regression was used to build different models, including clinical, imaging, radiomics, and integrated models (combining clinical, imaging, and radiomics features selected). The model’s discrimination was evaluated using a receiver operating characteristic curve, its calibration with a calibration curve, and the results were visualized using the Hosmer–Lemeshow goodness-of-fit test. Thirteen clinical features and fourteen imaging features were selected for constructing the clinical and imaging models. Simultaneously, a set of twenty-five radiomics features were utilized to build the radiomics model. The integrated model demonstrated good calibration and discrimination in the training cohorts (AUC, 0.922; 95% CI: 0.900, 0.942), validation cohorts (AUC, 0.879; 95% CI: 0.806, 0.920), and testing cohorts (AUC, 0.877; 95% CI: 0.836, 0.916). The discriminatory and predictive efficacy of the clinical model in testing cohorts increased further after clinical and radiological features were incorporated (AUC, 0.849 vs. 0.922, P = 0.002). The model demonstrated exemplary predictive efficacy for SMPP by leveraging a comprehensive set of inputs, encompassing clinical data, quantitative and qualitative radiological features, along with radiomics features. The integration of these three aspects in the predictive model further enhanced the performance of the clinical model, indicating the potential for extensive clinical applications.

Abstract Background This study aimed to compare the survival outcomes of transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) between patients with early recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma (rHCC) after hepatic resection, stratified by cytokeratin (CK) 19 expression. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on 63 patients with early rHCC after hepatic resection who underwent TACE between January 2017 and December 2021. Patients were divided into two groups based on CK19 expression: CK19-negative (n=31) and CK19-positive (n=32). Overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were compared between the two groups using the Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank test. Cox regression analysis was performed to identify independent risk factors for OS and PFS. Results The CK19-negative group demonstrated a significantly longer median OS compared to the CK19-positive group (635 days vs. 432 days, p=0.013). Similarly, the CK19-negative group had a longer median PFS than the CK19-positive group (291 days vs. 117 days, p=0.014). Multivariate Cox analysis identified Child-Pugh A grade, CK19-negative expression, and increased TACE sessions as protective factors for OS. No severe TACE-related adverse events were observed. Conclusion In patients with early rHCC after hepatic resection, those with CK19-positive expression had poorer survival outcomes following TACE compared to CK19-negative patients. These findings suggest the need for additional therapies to improve survival in CK19-positive individuals.

The aim of this research was to optimize the polysaccharides extraction process from the peels of Akebia trifoliate, and evaluate its in vitro antioxidant and hypoglycemic activity. The ultrasonic-assisted extraction process of polysaccharides from the peels of Akebia trifoliate was optimized using single-factor combined with orthogonal experiment. The antioxidant activity of polysaccharides from the peels of Akebia trifoliate was investigated by using DPPH radical scavenging rate and total reducing ability as the indicators. The hypoglycemic activity of polysaccharides from the peels of Akebia trifoliate was explored using α-glucosidase and α-amylase inhibition rate as the indicators. The results demonstrated that the optimal ultrasonic-assisted extraction process of polysaccharides from the peels of Akebia trifoliate was ultrasound power 280 W, ultrasound time 60 min, extraction temperature 50 ℃, solid-liquid ratio 1:40 g/mL, respectively. Under the optimal process condition, the extraction rate of polysaccharides from the peels of Akebia trifoliate was 5.91%±0.20%. Within the measured concentration range, polysaccharides from the peels of Akebia trifoliate had the preferable DPPH radical scavenging and reducing ability. In addition, the IC50 values of polysaccharides from the peels of Akebia trifoliate and VC for scavenging DPPH free radicals were 0.329 and 0.077 mg/mL, separately. The IC50 values of polysaccharides from the peels of Akebia trifoliate for inhibiting α-glucosidase and α-amylase activity were 0.386 and 0.307 mg/mL, respectively. This research proved that the polysaccharides from the peels of Akebia trifoliate extracted by this optimal process had better in vitro antioxidant and hypoglycemic activity.

Abstract The use of natural gas pipeline networks to transmit hydrogen energy is an important form of hydrogen energy utilisation. The coupling of hydrogen‐enriched natural gas pipeline network and power grid involves the energy conversion of electricity‐hydrogen‐electricity, so the assessment is crucial because the system is complex, and the hazards to the system can be identified. This paper proposes a risk assessment method for gas‐electric coupling of hydrogen‐enriched natural gas pipeline networks and a three‐stage risk assessment model to assess the life cycle risk of natural gas pipelines; a material energy‐based risk transfer model considering gas‐electric coupling is proposed to describe the risk transfer process of hydrogen‐enriched natural gas between the gas network and the grid. By comparing and analysing the risk of natural gas blending ratio to the pipeline and the risk of pipeline pressure to the pipeline, the validity of the model is verified, which provides safety support for the connection of the natural gas pipeline system to the grid and ensures the efficient use of hydrogen energy.

Leading national space exploration agencies and private enterprises are actively engaged in lunar exploration initiatives to accomplish manned lunar landings and establish permanent lunar bases in the forthcoming years. With limited access to lunar surface materials on Earth, lunar regolith simulants are crucial for lunar exploration research. The Chang’e-5 (CE-5) samples have been characterized by state-of-the-art laboratory equipment, providing a unique opportunity to develop a high-quality lunar regolith simulant. We have prepared a high-fidelity PolyU-1 simulant by pulverizing, desiccating, sieving, and blending natural mineral materials on Earth based on key physical, mineral, and chemical characteristics of CE-5 samples. The results showed that the simulant has a high degree of consistency with the CE-5 samples in terms of the particle morphology, mineral and chemical composition. Direct shear tests were conducted on the simulant, and the measured internal friction angle and cohesion values can serve as references for determining the mechanical properties of CE-5 lunar regolith. The PolyU-1 simulant can contribute to experimental studies involving lunar regolith, including the assessment of interaction between rovers and lunar regolith, as well as the development of in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) technologies.

Abstract The contact finger electrical connection structure is a crucial component of high voltage bushings, and its safety and reliability directly impact the operational stability of the bushing. To investigate electrical contact performance of the contact finger under eccentric conditions, a three‐dimensional electrical, thermal, and force multi‐physics coupling calculation model was established. Additionally, a test platform was constructed to measure electrical contact characteristics of the contact finger. The contact characteristics of the contact finger when the male head was axially deflected and radially offset compared to the female head were obtained. The research findings indicate when the male head deflects axially, the contact force changes of the contact finger blades on both sides are opposite. Moreover, as the axial deflection angle of the male head increases, the resistance of the electrical connection structure shows a rising‐slow decreasing‐fluctuating trend. The resistance is highest at 3°, with a resistance increase rate of 7.35%. Furthermore, the resistance of the electrical connection structure varies with the radial offset of the male head, following a power function. Contact failure occurs when the radial offset is 1.31 mm, and the resistance increase rate reaches 24.9% at a radial offset of 1.58 mm.

Hidden disaster-causing factors in coal mines are key geological factors that restrict the safety, high efficiency, green and intelligent mining, and transparent geology is an important technical means to realize the detection of hidden disaster-causing factors in coal mines, among them, geological structure transparent exploration is the most important. In order to build a transparent exploration system for hidden disaster-causing factors of geological structure that applies to different geological conditions or coalfield areas, first, based on analysis of factors causing hidden structural disasters, technical system of rapid investigation of factors causing structural hidden disasters is put forward, which is based on the regional structural analysis and the joint investigation of the ground and underground, effectively delineate the mine geological structure anomaly development area and analyze its distribution law. Based on the previous borehole data and 3D seismic data, the coal seam thickness, fault structure and roof and floor structure undulation patterns are analyzed. Comprehensive technical means such as channel wave exploration, directional drilling, advanced geophysical prospecting, earthquake while mining/driving, cuttings recording, rapid realistic description of roadway are adopted, further realizing the gradual transparency of the geological structure of the mining face, adopting the methods of theoretical analysis, engineering analogy, numerical simulation, similar material simulation, field engineering verification. Correlation between geological structure types, attribute characteristics and mine disasters, such as coal seam thickness, coal rock mass structure, gas emission, gas pressure, roof strata behavior, is analyzed. Response law of gas parameters and roof/ground pressure disasters in different areas of the mining face passing through the fault structure under the mining condition is studied. Monitoring and early-warning of the hidden disaster-causing factors of the face structures are realized by selecting the threshold value of the characteristic parameters, and the digital expression of the different geological structures and their disaster attributes is realized by using the digital technology, 3D transparent display of hidden disaster-causing factors is realized by modeling software. The technical system of geological structure exploration with 4 levels of regional structure geology research, exploration of hidden disaster-causing factors, scientific evaluation of disaster-causing threat and geological structure transparency is constructed, and carried out engineering practice in Tunbao Coal Mine. the results show that the types of geological structures in coal mine are complex, and there are not only graben type, barrier type, echelon type and flexure type of fault structures, but also small-scale scouring zone, fault and fracture zone. Complex geological structure is the key geological factor to induce mine gas outburst, roof disaster, stress concentration and mine rock burst. The influence of faults on stress concentration of roadway is 10 ～ 15 m, and the influence on working face is 20 ~ 30 m. There are gas enrichment areas in the working face, the distribution of gas content and gas emission has obvious zonation, and the zonation is controlled by faults. The content of coal seam gas and the amount of gas emission show logarithmic correlation with the distance between the working face and the fault, and increase obviously at the distance of 25 m from the fault, and change little in the area of more than 25 m, in the region less than 25 m, it increases exponentially with the decrease of distance. 20 m before and after the first pressure position and 30 m after the face-to-face are medium impact danger areas, the coal pillar affected area in goaf, 50 m before and after the final line, and 30 m before and after the fault with drop greater than 4 m are weak impact risk areas. The overlapping area of hidden disaster-causing factors such as rock burst, roof and gas, is the key area of disaster prevention and control. The research result realizes seamless connection between the hidden disaster-causing factors of geological structure and the mine disaster, and provides a feasible technical path for the development of traditional geological exploration in coal mine area to digitalization and intelligentization.

Abstract The redox state of a planetary mantle affects its thermal evolution. The redox evolution of lunar mantle, however, remains unclear due to limited oxygen fugacity (fO2) constraints from young lunar samples. Here, we report vanadium (V) oxybarometers on olivine and spinel conducted on 27 Chang’e-5 basalt fragments from 2.0 billion years ago. These fragments yield an average fO2 of ΔIW -0.84 ± 0.65 (2σ), which closely aligns with the Apollo samples from 3.6–3.0 billion years ago. This temporal uniformity indicates the lunar mantle remained reduced. This observation reveals that the processes responsible for oxidizing mantles of Earth and Mars either did not occur or had negligible oxidizing effects on the Moon. The long-term reduced mantle may lead to a distinctive volatile degassing pathway for the Moon. It could also make the lunar mantle more difficult to melt, preventing internal heat dissipation and consequently resulting in a slow cooling rate.

Objective To explore the influencing factors of Escherichia coli (E. coli) colonization in the production of extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) in elderly hospitalized patients and establish a prediction model. Methods A total of 140 elderly patients admitted to Changzhi People's Hospital from August 2022 to November 2023 were selected and divided into the modeling cohort, and another 63 elderly patients admitted to our hospital during the same period were selected as the validation cohort. Patients with ESBL-producing E. coli colonization detected in the modeling cohort were divided into the exposed group, and patients without ESBL-producing E. coli colonization were divided into the non-exposed group. Baseline data, antibacterial drug use, and comorbidities were collected from the two groups. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed for the indicators with differences. Multivariate logistic regression analysis results were used to construct a nomogram model. Column identification was assessed by C-index, and ROC curve was used to assess the internal validation results. Receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC curve) was drawn to evaluate the value of the prediction model and construct a calibration curve and decision curve were constructed. Results There were no significant differences in baseline data between the modeling cohort and the validation cohort (P > 0.05) . In the modeling cohort, 35 patients with ESBL-producing E. coli colonization detected were in the exposed group and 105 patients without ESBL-producing E. coli colonization were in the non-exposed group, and there were significant differences in the use of third-generation cephalosporins, urinary catheter indwelling, gastric tube indwelling, combined antibiotics, and length of hospital stay between the two groups (P < 0.05) . The results of multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the use of third-generation cephalosporins, urinary catheter indwelling, gastric tube indwelling, combined antibiotics and length of hospital stay were independent risk factors affecting ESBL-producing E. coli colonization (P < 0.05) . The constructed prediction models were internally validated with the validation cohort, and the results showed that the models showed high discrimination and calibration in both the modeling cohort and the validation cohort, and the Hosmer Lemeshow test showed that there were no significant differences between the predicted probabilities and the actual probabilities in the validation cohort and the modeling cohort (P > 0.05) . The nomogram prediction model developed from the results of multivariate logistic regression analysis, validated by the validated cohort, showed an AUC of 0.917 (95% CI: 0.861 - 0.973) by ROC curve, indicating a high accuracy of the prediction model. Conclusion The use of third-generation cephalosporins, length of hospital stay, urinary catheter indwelling, gastric tube indwelling and combined antibiotics are all important influencing factors of ESBL-producing E. coli colonization in patients, and the nomogram model constructed based on this has high clinical value.

Abstract White organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs) hold significant promise in illumination and displays, but achieving high efficiency while maintaining stability is an ongoing challenge. Here, we strategically combine a blue donor-acceptor thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitter featuring rapid reverse intersystem crossing rate and a yellow multi-resonance TADF emitter renowned for the fast radiative transition process to achieve warm WOLEDs with exceptional power efficiency exceeding 190 lm W−1 and external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 39%, setting records for WOLEDs. Meanwhile, these devices also exhibit an extended operational lifetime (LT80) of 446 h at an initial luminance of 1000 cd m−2. Another group of blue and yellow emitters based on our strategy achieves a standard white emission and a high EQE of 35.6%, confirming the universality of our strategy. This work presents a versatile strategy to harmonize singlet exciton radiation and triplet exciton up-conversion, thus achieving a win-win situation of efficiency and stability.

Abstract Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic joint disease characterized by the degeneration, destruction, and excessive ossification of articular cartilage. The prevalence of OA is rising annually, concomitant with the aging global population and increasing rates of obesity. This condition imposes a substantial and escalating burden on individual health, healthcare systems, and broader social and economic frameworks. The etiology of OA is multifaceted and not fully understood. Current research suggests that the death of chondrocytes, encompassing mechanisms such as cellular apoptosis, pyroptosis, autophagy, ferroptosis and cuproptosis, contributes to both the initiation and progression of the disease. These cell death pathways not only diminish the population of chondrocytes but also exacerbate joint damage through the induction of inflammation and other deleterious processes. This paper delineates the morphological characteristics associated with various modes of cell death and summarizes current research results on the molecular mechanisms of different cell death patterns in OA. The objective is to review the advancements in understanding chondrocyte cell death in OA, thereby offering novel insights for potential clinical interventions.

Abstract The study of hydrogen concentration distribution law of hydrogen-doped methane pipeline is directly related to the safety and stability of hydrogen-doped methane pipeline network. Based on the theory of fluid dynamics, this paper established a model of hydrogen-doped methane pipeline and simulated the operation and shutdown status of hydrogen-doped methane pipeline by adopting the computational fluid dynamics method and selecting the mixture multiphase model and standard k - ε turbulence model. This paper investigates the hydrogen concentration distribution law in hydrogen-doped methane pipelines as well as the influence law of different hydrogen-doping ratios, operating flow velocities, operating pressures, shutdown time and gas usage on the hydrogen concentration distribution in gas pipeline. The results show that: under the operation condition, there is a weak uneven distribution of hydrogen in the pipeline, the hydrogen-doping ratio, flow velocity, pressure on the hydrogen volume fraction of the change in the 0.9% or less, the effect can be ignored; in the shutdown status, there is a clear stratification phenomenon, the hydrogen-doping ratio increased from 10 to 25%, the change in the volume fraction of hydrogen in the 11.2% or less, a positive correlation; with the extension of the shutdown time to 900s, the pipeline firstly appeared obvious stratification phenomenon in the branch pipe, the thickness of the gas with hydrogen volume fraction above 40% on the upper wall surface of the branch pipe increased to 0.7 mm, and after the shutdown time was extended to 10 h, obvious stratification phenomenon appeared in the main pipeline, and the volume fraction of hydrogen near the top of the main pipe of about 16.5 mm was above 30%, which was positively correlated; In the shutdown status, the shutdown time has the greatest effect on the stratification phenomenon in the pipe, followed by the hydrogen-doping ratio, and the gas usage has the least effect.

Abstract The poor prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is still an urgent challenge to be solved worldwide. Hence, assembling drugs and targeted short peptides together to construct a novel medicine delivery strategy is crucial for targeted and synergy therapy of HCC. Herein, a high-efficiency nanomedicine delivery strategy has been constructed by combining graphdiyne oxide (GDYO) as a drug-loaded platform, specific peptide (SP94-PEG) as a spear to target HCC cells, sorafenib, doxorubicin-Fe2+ (DOX-Fe2+), and siRNA (SLC7A11-i) as weapons to exert a three-path synergistic attack against HCC cells. In this work, SP94-PEG and GDYO form nanosheets with HCC-targeting properties, the chemotherapeutic drug DOX linked to ferrous ions increases the free iron pool in HCC cells and synergizes with sorafenib to induce cell ferroptosis. As a key gene of ferroptosis, interference with the expression of SLC7A11 makes the ferroptosis effect in HCC cells easier, stronger, and more durable. Through gene interference, drug synergy, and short peptide targeting, the toxic side effects of chemotherapy drugs are reduced. The multifunctional nanomedicine GDYO@SP94/DOX-Fe2+/sorafenib/SLC7A11-i (MNMG) possesses the advantages of strong targeting, good stability, the ability to continuously induce tumor cell ferroptosis and has potential clinical application value, which is different from traditional drugs.

Abstract Background Formal home and community-based care are often considered as the preferable option to institutional care, offering older individuals the convenience of receiving care in their homes. Although research has found that these services may alleviate the burden on informal caregivers, there is a lack of research on which specific types of formal home and community-based care influence informal care provision. Methods Employing fixed-effects and quantile regression models, this study seeks to explore the effects that various formal home and community-based care services have on reducing the burden of informal care. This study draws data from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey 2005, 2008, 2011, 2014, and 2018. Results Our findings indicate that two types of formal care substantially influence the provision of informal care. The availability of daily living assistance services correlates with reduced informal caregiving hours, especially for those with extensive care needs. The availability of community-based health care services is linked to a reduction in the direct expenses incurred from informal caregiving, especially for those incurring greater direct caregiving costs. These effects are more prominent among urban residents. Other services, such as mental health support and legal advice services, do not demonstrate significant effects on reducing informal care hours and costs. Conclusions Daily living assistance and community-based health care services play a crucial role in benefiting informal caregivers. It is important to prioritize the expansion of these services, especially among those with greater care needs.

Objectives: With rising rates of maxillofacial fracture, postoperative infection following rigid internal fixation is an important issue that requires immediate resolution. It is important to explore an alternative antibacterial method apart from conventional antibiotics. A controlled experiment was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a caerin 1.9 peptide–coated titanium plate in reducing mandibular infection in New Zealand (NZ) rabbits, aiming to minimise the risk of post–metallic implantation infection. Methods: Twenty-two NZ rabbits were randomly divided into 3 groups. The experiment group received caerin 1.9 peptide–coated titanium plates and mixed oral bacteria exposure. The control group received normal titanium plates with mixed oral bacteria exposure. The untreated group served as a control to prove that bacteria in the mouth can cause infection. Weight, temperature, hepatic function, and C-reactive protein levels were measured. Wound and bone conditions were evaluated. Further analysis included local infection, anatomic conditions, histology, and bacterial load. Results: No significant differences were found in temperature, weight, blood alanine aminotransferase, and C-reactive protein levels amongst the 3 groups. The experiment group showed the lowest amount of bacterial RNA in wounds. Additionally, the experiment group had higher peripheral lymphocyte counts compared to the control group and lower neutrophil counts on the third and seventh day postoperatively. Histologic analysis revealed lower levels of inflammatory cell infiltration, bleeding, and areas of necrosis in the experimental group compared with the controls. Conclusions: A caerin 1.9–coated titanium plate is able to inhibit bacterial growth in a NZ rabbit mandibular mixed bacteria infection model and is worth further investigation.

Nanocomposites represent one of the most useful strategies for resolving the pharmaceutical challenge about the dissolution and delivery of poorly water-soluble drugs. Besides the compatibility between the drug and polymeric carriers, the physical shapes of materials also play their important roles on the release behaviors of a guest poorly water-soluble drug from the host polymeric matrices. In this study, three kinds of nanocomposites in the forms of homogeneous nanofibers (E1), spindles-on-a-string (E2), and beads-on-a-string (E3) were prepared using electrospinning with ketoprofen (KET) as the model drug and a mixture of ethylcellulose (EC) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as the polymeric matrices. Controllable preparation mechanisms of these morphologies are disclosed based on the results of SEM, TEM, and processes observations. XRD and FTIR data demonstrated that KET was compatible with PVP and EC. In vitro dissolution tests verified that all the three nanocomposites were able to provide the typical bi-stage fast-sustained release profiles of KET. Whereas, the beads-on-a-string E3 had a better functional performance than the spindles-on-a-string E2, and the homogeneous nanofibers E1 in terms of the KET sustained release profiles in the second stage. The protocols reported here pioneered a new way for developing novel functional nanocomposites based on the process-shape-performance relationship.

The on-going COVID-19 pandemic has wrecked havoc in our society, with short and long-term consequences to people's lives and livelihoods - over 651 million COVID-19 cases have been confirmed with the number of deaths exceeding 6.66 million. As people stay indoors most of the time, how to operate the Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) systems as well as building facilities to reduce airborne infections have become hot research topics. This paper presents a systematic review on COVID-19 related research in HVAC systems and the indoor environment. Firstly, it reviews the research on the improvement of ventilation, filtration, heating and air-conditioning systems since the onset of COVID-19. Secondly, various indoor environment improvement measures to minimize airborne spread, such as building envelope design, physical barriers and vent position arrangement, and the possible impact of COVID-19 on building energy consumption are examined. Thirdly, it provides comparisons on the building operation guidelines for preventing the spread of COVID-19 virus from different countries. Finally, recommendations for future studies are provided.

This is an article in the field of mining processing engineering. This article takes Dechang Daluchao rare earth mineral processing tailings as the research object, conducts a beneficiation test study on fluorspar recovery, and determines the beneficiation process flow and reagent of "flotation desulphurization - mixed flotation - flotation separation of fluorite, strontium and barium" for fluorite recovery. In the flotation test, the new MQY collector and DC-2 high-efficiency inhibitor were used to efficiently capture fluorite while achieving precise separation of fluorite and gangue minerals. In the final full-process test, a fluorspar concentrate with a CaF2 grade of 94.39% and a recovery rate of 51.41% was obtained. The test indicators were relatively ideal. This article tested and verified the feasibility of recovering fluorspar from the Dalunchao rare earth tailings. The final beneficiation process is reasonable and has good test indicators. It can be used as a technical basis for the utilization and recovery of fluorspar resources in the Dalunchao rare earth tailings.

Abstract Background Airway pressure release ventilation (APRV) has become increasingly popular for the management of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS); however, its clinical impact remains a topic of debate. Furthermore, there is a gap between the guidelines and the actual clinical practices in mechanical ventilation management for ARDS. This survey aimed to explore the utilization of APRV and mechanical ventilation strategies for ARDS in Chinese intensive care unit (ICU) clinicians. Methods A comprehensive 34‐item survey was distributed online platforms amongst ICU clinicians across mainland China from June to August 2019. Results A total of 420 valid responses were collected, with 57.4% (241) originating from academic hospitals and 42.6% (179) from non‐academic hospitals. Of the respondents, 98.6% (414) recognized the significance of low tidal volume ventilation for ARDS prognosis, 85.2% adhered to a tidal volume below 8 mL/kg predicted body weight, and most (46.4%) selected the initial positive end‐expiratory pressure within the range of 5–10 cmH2O based on experience. Among the respondents, 62.1% (261) reported familiarity with APRV and 41.9% (176) had implemented APRV. Of those who had utilized APRV, 93.2% (164) believed in its effectiveness for ARDS patients and 69.3% (122) advocated for early application of APRV. Substantial variations were noted regarding APRV initiation settings and the preservation of spontaneous breathing during APRV. Academic hospitals exhibited higher usage rates of lung recruitment, neuromuscular blockade, prone ventilation, and acquaintance with and utilization of APRV compared to non‐academic hospitals (all p values ≤ 0.001). Conclusions Our findings highlight opportunities for improvement in mechanical ventilation management for ARDS, particularly in non‐academic hospitals. Additionally, a significant proportion of clinicians demonstrated limited knowledge of APRV, and there was a lack of consensus on its application. Further training and larger‐scale clinical trials are required to validate the efficacy and utilization of APRV in managing ARDS.

Abstract Background Ischemic stroke elicits a complex and sustained immune response in the brain. Immunomodulatory treatments have long held promise for improving stroke outcomes, yet none have succeeded in the clinical setting. This lack of success is largely due to our incomplete understanding of how immune cells respond to stroke. The objective of the current study was to dissect the effect of permanent stroke on microglia, the resident immune cells within the brain parenchyma. Methods A permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (pMCAO) model was used to induce ischemic stroke in young male and female mice. Microglia were sorted from fluorescence reporter mice after pMCAO or sham surgery and then subjected to single-cell RNA sequencing analysis. Various methods, including flow cytometry, RNA in situ hybridization, immunohistochemistry, whole-brain imaging, and bone marrow transplantation, were also employed to dissect the microglial response to stroke. Stroke outcomes were evaluated by infarct size and behavioral tests. Results First, we showed the morphologic and spatial changes in microglia after stroke. We then performed single-cell RNA sequencing analysis on microglia isolated from sham and stroke mice of both sexes. The data indicate no major sexual dimorphism in the microglial response to permanent stroke. Notably, we identified seven potential stroke-associated microglial clusters, including four major clusters characterized by a disease-associated microglia-like signature, a highly proliferative state, a macrophage-like profile, and an interferon (IFN) response signature, respectively. Importantly, we provided evidence that the macrophage-like cluster may represent the long-sought stroke-induced microglia subpopulation with increased CD45 expression. Lastly, given that the IFN-responsive subset constitutes the most prominent microglial population in the stroke brain, we used fludarabine to pharmacologically target STAT1 signaling and found that fludarabine treatment improved long-term stroke outcome. Conclusions Our findings shed new light on microglia heterogeneity in stroke pathology and underscore the potential of targeting specific microglial populations for effective stroke therapies.

Understanding the effect of main extracts of capsicum, a general name of a series of capsaicinoids and capsinoids substances, on exercise performance can provide a basis for the application of this substance in sports. This article provides a comprehensive and critical review of the research on main extracts of capsicum and exercise performance based on selected articles published in peer-reviewed journal over the past 20 years. The results show that: The main extracts of capsicum are effective for improving aerobic endurance, anaerobic, muscle strength and high intensity intermittent exercise performance. The mechanism by which the main extracts of capsaicum enhancing muscle explosive strength, maximum strength, anaerobic performance is related to the increase of sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ concentration and neuromuscular junction acetylcholine release and improving aerobic endurance, muscle endurance, high-intensity intermittent exercise performance is related to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, vasodilator, and increasing energy contribution from fat. Future research needs to focus on more exercise types and subject groups, special environment, chronic intervention, dose-effect relationship, mechanism confirmation, and application of capsiate. In summary, the main extracts of capsicum can improve the exercise performance, and it may have a wide application prospect in sports.

Introduction: Adipogenesis, the process of white adipose tissue expansion, plays a critical role in the development of obesity. Osteoprotegerin (OPG), known for its role in bone metabolism regulation, emerges as a potential regulator in mediating adipogenesis during obesity onset. Objectives: This study aims to elucidate the involvement of OPG in adipogenesis during the early phases of diet-induced obesity and explore its therapeutic potential in obesity management. Methods: Using a diet-induced obesity model, we investigated OPG expression patterns in adipocytes and explored the mechanisms underlying its involvement in adipogenesis. We also assessed the effects of targeted silencing of OPG and recombinant OPG administration on obesity progression and insulin resistance. Additionally, the impact of electroacupuncture treatment on OPG levels and obesity management was evaluated in both animal models and human participants. Results: OPG expression was prominently activated in adipocytes of white adipose tissues during the early phase of diet-induced obesity. Hyperlipidemia induced Cbfa1-dependent OPG transcription, initiating and promoting adipogenesis, leading to cell-size expansion and lipid storage. Intracellular OPG physically bound to RAR and released the PPARɤ/RXR complex, activating adipogenesis-associated gene expression. Targeted silencing of OPG suppressed obesity development, while recombinant OPG administration promoted disease progression and insulin resistance in obese mice. Electroacupuncture treatment suppressed obesity development in an OPG-dependent manner and improved obesity parameters in obese human participants. Conclusion: OPG emerges as a key regulator in mediating adipogenesis during obesity development. Targeting OPG holds promise for the prevention and treatment of obesity, as evidenced by the efficacy of electroacupuncture treatment in modulating OPG levels and managing obesity-related outcomes.

Abstract A new intuitionistic fuzzy consensus reaching model is developed with multi-period public opinions and expert evaluation values in social network environment. First, the public opinions are obtained by using the crawler software and sentiment analysis technology is used to transform public opinions into intuitionistic fuzzy decision matrix in each period. Attribute weights are calculated by using the time attenuation factor and changes in public opinion. Second, the social trust relationship is modeled and incomplete social trust relationships are completed by using Archimedean t-norm. The expert weights are calculated by using the dynamic trust degree and similarity degree. Third, a consensus framework is proposed for multiple-period decision making problem, which coordinates conflicts between experts through dual feedback paths. The collective opinion scores are calculated by using weights of periods and attribute weights obtained from the word frequency of public opinions. The tourism attraction recommendation method is used to illustrate the proposed method.

Abstract Background Isoprostanes and prostaglandins are biomarkers for oxidative stress and inflammation. Their role in Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathophysiology is yet unknown. In the current study, we aim to identify the association of isoprostanes and prostaglandins with the Amyloid, Tau, Neurodegeneration (ATN) biomarkers (Aβ-42, p-tau, and t-tau) of AD pathophysiology in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) subjects. Methods Targeted metabolomics profiling was performed using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LCMS) in 147 paired plasma-CSF samples from the Ace Alzheimer Center Barcelona and 58 CSF samples of MCI patients from the Mannheim/Heidelberg cohort. Linear regression was used to evaluate the association of metabolites with CSF levels of ATN biomarkers in the overall sample and stratified by Aβ-42 pathology and APOE genotype. We further evaluated the role of metabolites in MCI to AD dementia progression. Abstract The gut microbiota has been demonstrated to play a significant role in the pathogenesis of Parkinson’s disease (PD). However, conflicting findings regarding specific microbial species have been reported, possibly due to confounding factors within human populations. Herein, our current study investigated the interaction between the gut microbiota and host in a non-human primate (NHP) PD model induced by 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) using a multi-omic approach and a self-controlled design. Our transcriptomic sequencing of peripheral blood leukocytes (PBL) identified key genes involved in pro-inflammatory cytokine dysregulation, mitochondrial function regulation, neuroprotection activation, and neurogenesis associated with PD, such as IL1B, ATP1A3, and SLC5A3. The metabolomic profiles in serum and feces consistently exhibited significant alterations, particularly those closely associated with inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunctions and neurodegeneration in PD, such as TUDCA, ethylmalonic acid, and L-homophenylalanine. Furthermore, fecal metagenome analysis revealed gut dysbiosis associated with PD, characterized by a significant decrease in alpha diversity and altered commensals, particularly species such as Streptococcus, Butyrivibrio, and Clostridium. Additionally, significant correlations were observed between PD-associated microbes and metabolites, such as sphingomyelin and phospholipids. Importantly, PDPC significantly reduced in both PD monkey feces and serum, exhibiting strong correlation with PD-associated genes and microbes, such as SLC5A3 and Butyrivibrio species. Moreover, such multi-omic differential biomarkers were linked to the clinical rating scales of PD monkeys. Our findings provided novel insights into understanding the potential role of key metabolites in the host-microbiota interaction involved in PD pathogenesis.

Abstract Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is considered a “metabolic disease” characterized by elevated glycolysis in patients with advanced RCC. Tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy is currently an important treatment option for advanced RCC, but drug resistance may develop in some patients. Combining TKI with targeted metabolic therapy may provide a more effective approach for patients with advanced RCC. An analysis of 14 RCC patients (including three needle biopsy samples with TKI resistance) revealed by sing-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) that glycolysis played a crucial role in poor prognosis and drug resistance in RCC. TCGA-KIRC and glycolysis gene set analysis identified DEPDC1 as a target associated with malignant progression and drug resistance in KIRC. Subsequent experiments demonstrated that DEPDC1 promoted malignant progression and glycolysis of RCC, and knockdown DEPDC1 could reverse TKI resistance in RCC cell lines. Bulk RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) and non-targeted metabolomics sequencing suggested that DEPDC1 may regulate RCC glycolysis via AKT/mTOR/HIF1α pathway, a finding supported by protein-level analysis. Clinical tissue samples from 98 RCC patients demonstrated that DEPDC1 was associated with poor prognosis and predicted RCC metastasis. In conclusion, this multi-omics analysis suggests that DEPDC1 could serve as a novel target for TKI combined with targeted metabolic therapy in advanced RCC patients with TKI resistance.

Abstract Objective Self-rated health (SRH) has been documented as an important predictor of quality of life among the elderly and its risk factors are vision-specific among elderly males. The aim of this study was to clarify vision-specific risk factors to SRH among elderly females without dementia in Chinese urban areas. Methods From March to November 2012, 2147 elderly women in Liaoning Province of China were selected using a stratified sampling method. After cognitive screening, 1956 participants without dementia were finally enrolled. A questionnaire including SRH, visual ability and factors including demographic characteristics, physical conditions, lifestyle factors, social psychological status and social activities were analyzed. Multivariate logistic regression was used to clarify the association of SRH with risk factors, while stepwise multivariate logistic regression was used to examine the vision-specific associations with SRH. Results The mean age was 73.6 ± 5.82 (mean ± SD). The percentages of good SRH in good and impaired visual ability groups were 36.2% and 24.4%, respectively. Most characteristics between elderly females with different visual abilities were significantly different. Visual ability had interactions with physical conditions, lifestyle factors and social activities to affect SRH. Among elderly females with good visual ability, depressive symptoms, rather than chronic disease had the strongest association with good SRH followed by marital status, regular diet, going out alone to distant places, taking a walk, smoking and alcohol consumption. In the impaired visual ability group, going out alone to distant places had the strongest association with good SRH followed by chronic disease, filial piety, taking a walk, participating in entertainment, ethnicity, quality of sleep, worrying about falling and alcohol consumption. Conclusions Good SRH status was at a low level especially among elderly females with impaired visual ability and the risk factors differed between elderly females with different visual abilities. Social psychological status was crucial for SRH among elderly females with good visual ability whereas physical conditions were prominent for impaired visual ability group.

Abstract The discovery of new natural sources has brought increased attention to the development of functional foods. The hawthorn (Crataegus pinnatifida Bge.) fruit is an underutilized fruit due to its benefits for human health and good taste. It contains a variety of bioactive ingredients, contributing to its multiple beneficial functions and applications. This review summarized and discussed the main bioactive ingredients, beneficial functions based on in vitro, in vivo, and human studies, and different applications of the hawthorn fruit according to the updated literature in the past 3 years. Hawthorn berries contain phenolic acids, flavonoids, proanthocyanidins, pectin, and many other bioactive components, which have a variety of beneficial functions, such as antioxidant, anti‐inflammatory, antibacterial, antidiabetic, intestinal protection, cardiovascular protection, hepatoprotection, anti‐cancer, and neuroprotection. Its potential molecular mechanism and different food‐related applications such as hawthorn wine and antioxidant drink are discussed in detail in this review. Additionally, hawthorn berries are shown to be safe when consumed within the proper dosage. Collectively, this updated review indicates that the hawthorn fruit can be a new dietary source of bioactive ingredients with multiple beneficial functions and can be affordably developed into functional and medicinal foods for the prevention and management of certain chronic diseases.

Abstract Beverages with nutritional functional properties constitute one of the fastest‐growing segments in the food industry. Beverages produced with berries as raw materials, owing to their richness in various beneficial substances (such as fiber, vitamins, minerals, and bioactive phytochemicals), have emerged as integral components of nutritional functional beverages. In this review, we summarize the bioactive polyphenols present in berry beverages and discuss the potential properties of berries from an antidiabetic perspective. The application and impact of new technologies in the processing and production of berry beverages are also explored. Additionally, the review addresses the challenges and prospects faced by industrial development in berry beverage production. Our objective is to provide valuable information for food researchers and the berry beverage production industry, facilitating the production of highly nutritious drinks that appeal to consumers.

Abstract Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is often treated with neoadjuvant systemic therapy (NAST). We investigated if radiomic models based on multiparametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) obtained early during NAST predict pathologic complete response (pCR). We included 163 patients with stage I-III TNBC with multiparametric MRI at baseline and after 2 (C2) and 4 cycles of NAST. Seventy-eight patients (48%) had pCR, and 85 (52%) had non-pCR. Thirty-six multivariate models combining radiomic features from dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI and diffusion-weighted imaging had an area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC) > 0.7. The top-performing model combined 35 radiomic features of relative difference between C2 and baseline; had an AUC = 0.905 in the training and AUC = 0.802 in the testing set. There was high inter-reader agreement and very similar AUC values of the pCR prediction models for the 2 readers. Our data supports multiparametric MRI-based radiomic models for early prediction of NAST response in TNBC.

Abstract Outstanding overall mechanical properties are essential for the successful utilization of hydrogels in advanced applications such as human-machine interfaces and soft robotics. However, conventional hydrogels suffer from fracture toughness-stiffness conflict and fatigue threshold-stiffness conflict, limiting their applicability. Simultaneously enhancing the fracture toughness, fatigue threshold, and stiffness of hydrogels, especially within a homogeneous single network structure, has proven to be a formidable challenge. In this work, we overcome this challenge through the design of a loosely cross-linked hydrogel with slight dehydration. Experimental results reveal that the slightly-dehydrated, loosely cross-linked polyacrylamide hydrogel, with an original/current water content of 87%/70%, exhibits improved mechanical properties, which is primarily attributed to the synergy between the long-chain structure and the dense dehydration-induced entanglements. Importantly, the creation of these microstructures does not require intricate design or processing. This simple approach holds significant potential for hydrogel applications where excellent anti-fracture and fatigue-resistant properties are necessary.

Abstract Background Recent studies on the association between Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and obesity have reported conflicting results. Therefore, the purpose of our study was to investigate the association of obesity, abdominal obesity, and metabolic obesity phenotypes with H. pylori infection. Methods A cross-sectional study of 1568 participants aged 20 to 85 was conducted using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) cycle 1999–2000. Logistic regression models were employed to evaluate the association of general obesity as defined by body mass index (BMI), abdominal obesity as defined by waist circumference (WC) and waist-height ratio (WHtR), and metabolic obesity phenotypes with H. pylori seropositivity. Subgroup analyses stratified by age were conducted to explore age-specific differences in this association. Insufficient therapeutic strategies for acute kidney injury (AKI) necessitate precision therapy targeting its pathogenesis. This study reveals the new mechanism of the marine-derived anti-AKI agent, piericidin glycoside S14, targeting peroxiredoxin 1 (PRDX1). By binding to Cys83 of PRDX1 and augmenting its peroxidase activity, S14 alleviates kidney injury efficiently in Prdx1-overexpression (Prdx1-OE) mice. Besides, S14 also increases PRDX1 nuclear translocation and directly activates the Nrf2/HO-1/NQO1 pathway to inhibit ROS production. Due to the limited druggability of S14 with low bioavailability (2.6%) and poor renal distribution, a pH-sensitive kidney-targeting dodecanamine-chitosan nanoparticle system is constructed to load S14 for precise treatment of AKI. l-Serine conjugation to chitosan imparts specificity to kidney injury molecule-1 (Kim-1)-overexpressed cells. The developed S14-nanodrug exhibits higher therapeutic efficiency by improving the in vivo behavior of S14 significantly. By encapsulation with micelles, the AUC0‒t, half-life time, and renal distribution of S14 increase 2.5-, 1.8-, and 3.1-fold, respectively. The main factors contributing to the improved druggability of S14 nanodrugs include the lower metabolic elimination rate and UDP-glycosyltransferase (UGT)-mediated biotransformation. In summary, this study identifies a new therapeutic target for the marine-derived anti-AKI agent while enhancing its ADME properties and druggability through nanotechnology, thereby driving advancements in marine drug development for AKI.

The rheological behavior of propellant slurries is crucial for ensuring the feasibility of the 3D printing process, controlling print quality, regulating performance, and simulating predictions. However, there have been relatively few prior studies on the rheological properties of composite solid propellant slurries at low temperatures, which hinders the application of 3D printing propellant technology under extreme temperature conditions. In addition, the use of 3D printing technology to manufacture propellants at low temperatures is advantageous for improving safety. This paper investigates the rheological properties of monodisperse systems with aluminum powder as a solid filler and end-hydroxy polybutadiene (HTPB) as the dispersed phase at low temperatures (−15∼10 °C). It explores the effects of solid content, temperature, and particle size on their rheological properties. Results show that the viscosity of the system in the range of −15∼10 °C increases exponentially with the decrease in temperature, and the viscosity at −15 °C increases by 616.90 % compared with that at 10 °C when the volume fraction (φ) of Al-1 is 35.8 %; the larger size of the particles the larger the viscosity is when the temperature and φ are the same, which is interpretes in terms of interfacial properties between the systems. The low-temperature correction factor is introduced into the Einstein-Roscoe equation to obtain the modified viscosity-volume fraction equation, and the correction factor is 0.0173, as evidenced by its excellent agreement with the experimental data.

Energetic materials are the energy materials used by weaponry to accomplish launch, propulsion, and destruction. However, during manufacture, storage and use, they may be damaged and form microcracks when subjected to external stimuli such as temperature, humidity and impact, which ultimately lead to changes in material properties. Self-healing materials can repair the damage through physical or chemical processes, restoring their properties and extending their service life. This paper reviews the classification of self-healing polymer materials, principles underlying technologies for room-temperature self-healing polymer materials, and the applications of these technologies in energetic materials. Furthermore, this study proposes several key directions for future research on the technologies and their applications in energetic materials.

Irregular upper gobs may increase the risk of rock burst incidents in coal mines. Investigating the rock burst mechanism in the complex mining spatial structure of multi-seam rock bursts is essential for ensuring the safe extraction of coal resources. This study investigated the distribution characteristics of static and dynamic loads on the W1123 working face through a comprehensive approach utilizing theoretical analysis, numerical simulation, and on-site monitoring. The mechanism of rock bursts was analyzed and targeted preventive measures were proposed and applied on-site. The results indicated that the coupled effects of the overlying knife-shape-like gob and thick hard roofs exhibited regional characteristics in the distribution of static and dynamic loads beneath the W1123 working face. When the working face was solely influenced by the “handle” effect of the knife-shape-like gob or concurrently affected by both the “handle” and “blade body”, the lower part of the working face and the coal pillar experienced concentrated static loads and intense dynamic load disturbances. The surrounding rock in the upper gob also demonstrated concentrated static and dynamic loads, with the proximity to the boundary of the knife-shape-like gob resulting in higher dynamic and static loads. When only affected by the “blade body”, the upper surrounding rock of the working face experienced concentrated static loads and was disturbed by dynamic loads. The area of concentrated static loads and dynamic load disturbances in the working face coincided, leading to the manifestation of rock burst from the superposition of dynamic and static loads. Based on the structural characteristics of the knife-shape-like gob, the rock burst types during the mining period of the W1123 working face were sequentially classified as strong dynamic load type, high static load, strong dynamic load type, and high static load type. The risk of rock bursts assessed through on-site monitoring and numerical simulation matched the theoretical analysis outcomes. Rock burst prevention measures were optimized based on the distribution characteristics of static and dynamic loads on the W1123 working face. To mitigate the stress and energy concentration on the roof and coal body, we have enhanced the treatment height and crushing degree of the thick, hard roof while also intensifying coal body blasting and pillar cutting. Following the implementation of these optimized measures, the average event energy released by the surrounding rock of the working face decreased by 54%, and significant energy events were substantially reduced, leading to a significant reduction in the rock burst risk. This study can provide valuable insights for rock burst prevention in mines with irregular upper gobs.

Abstract Background Early identification of high-risk individuals with cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity (CIN) is crucial for avoiding CIN and improving prognosis. In this study, we developed and validated a CIN prediction model based on general clinical data, laboratory indications, and genetic features of lung cancer patients before chemotherapy. Methods We retrospectively included 696 lung cancer patients using platinum chemotherapy regimens from June 2019 to June 2021 as the traing set to construct a predictive model using Absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression, cross validation, and Akaike’s information criterion (AIC) to select important variables. We prospectively selected 283 independent lung cancer patients from July 2021 to December 2022 as the test set to evaluate the model’s performance. Results The prediction model showed good discrimination and calibration, with AUCs of 0.9217 and 0.8288, sensitivity of 79.89% and 45.07%, specificity of 94.48% and 94.81%, in the training and test sets respectively. Clinical decision curve analysis suggested that the model has value for clinical use when the risk threshold ranges between 0.1 and 0.9. Precision-Recall (PR) curve shown in recall interval from 0.5 to 0.75: precision gradually declines with increasing Recall, up to 0.9. Conclusions Predictive models based on laboratory and demographic variables can serve as a beneficial complementary tool for identifying high-risk populations with CIN.

Abstract Background Sex differences in the brain may play an important role in sex-differential prevalence of neuropsychiatric conditions. Methods In order to understand the transcriptional basis of sex differences, we analyzed multiple, large-scale, human postmortem brain RNA-Seq datasets using both within-region and pan-regional frameworks. Results We find evidence of sex-biased transcription in many autosomal genes, some of which provide evidence for pathways and cell population differences between chromosomally male and female individuals. These analyses also highlight regional differences in the extent of sex-differential gene expression. We observe an increase in specific neuronal transcripts in male brains and an increase in immune and glial function-related transcripts in female brains. Integration with single-nucleus data suggests this corresponds to sex differences in cellular states rather than cell abundance. Integration with case–control gene expression studies suggests a female molecular predisposition towards Alzheimer’s disease, a female-biased disease. Autism, a male-biased diagnosis, does not exhibit a male predisposition pattern in our analysis. Conclusion Overall, these analyses highlight mechanisms by which sex differences may interact with sex-biased conditions in the brain. Furthermore, we provide region-specific analyses of sex differences in brain gene expression to enable additional studies at the interface of gene expression and diagnostic differences. Abstract Background Sarcopenia is characterized by loss of skeletal muscle mass and function, and is a major risk factor for disability and independence in the elderly.
