Alopecia ranks among the most common clinical complaints encountered by dermatologists.1 In particular, affected women often experience great psycho-emotional stress leading to a reduction in quality of life.2 We conducted a prospective epidemiological study conducted over 77 weeks from 1 August 2022 to 23 January 2024 at an outpatient dermatology clinic at Singapore General Hospital. Our primary aim was to evaluate the aetiology of hair loss in adult women in Singapore. Patients above the age of 21 years consented to participation after a formal diagnosis of alopecia. Patient characteristics were analysed to reflect the various aetiologies causing hair loss in women.

Abstract Lack of pharmacogenomics knowledge among healthcare professionals is the most significant cited barrier to implementing pharmacogenomics in clinical settings. Despite the growth in research initiatives and awareness of pharmacogenomics, healthcare professionals continue to report a lack of knowledge and confidence in practicing pharmacogenomics. This study aims to assess the current pharmacogenomics knowledge gaps and learning needs of healthcare professionals in Malaysia. A modified Delphi with a multidisciplinary expert panel was conducted, and a purposive sampling method was used with predefined selection criteria. Fourteen study sites in Malaysia were included. The cut‐off value to approach consensus was predefined as a threshold of 60% or higher, and a quantitative descriptive statistical analysis was performed. The study demonstrated that all experts rated the suggested educational content components as essential/important to be included in the educational intervention. Additionally, experts highlighted the significant barriers and gaps to adopting and practicing pharmacogenomics. To conclude, this multisite Delphi study enabled the development of a tailored, effective, evidence‐based, competency‐based educational intervention in pharmacogenomics for healthcare professionals in Malaysia. To keep up with the rapid evolution of the pharmacogenomics field, healthcare professionals should be equipped with the necessary competencies required to practice pharmacogenomics for better health outcomes. Future research is needed to determine the feasibility of the proposed educational intervention.

IntroductionIn human-robot interaction (HRI), understanding human intent is crucial for robots to perform tasks that align with user preferences. Traditional methods that aim to modify robot trajectories based on language corrections often require extensive training to generalize across diverse objects, initial trajectories, and scenarios. This work presents ExTraCT, a modular framework designed to modify robot trajectories (and behaviour) using natural language input.MethodsUnlike traditional end-to-end learning approaches, ExTraCT separates language understanding from trajectory modification, allowing robots to adapt language corrections to new tasks–including those with complex motions like scooping–as well as various initial trajectories and object configurations without additional end-to-end training. ExTraCT leverages Large Language Models (LLMs) to semantically match language corrections to predefined trajectory modification functions, allowing the robot to make necessary adjustments to its path. This modular approach overcomes the limitations of pre-trained datasets and offers versatility across various applications.ResultsComprehensive user studies conducted in simulation and with a physical robot arm demonstrated that ExTraCT’s trajectory corrections are more accurate and preferred by users in 80% of cases compared to the baseline.DiscussionExTraCT offers a more explainable approach to understanding language corrections, which could facilitate learning human preferences. We also demonstrated the adaptability and effectiveness of ExTraCT in a complex scenarios like assistive feeding, presenting it as a versatile solution across various HRI applications.

This paper presents a calibration approach for multiple synchronized global-shutter RGB cameras surrounding a large capture volume for 3D application. The calibration approach uses an active wand with two LED-embedded markers waved manually within the target capture volume. Data from the waving wand are combined with chessboard images taken at close range during each camera’s intrinsic calibration, optimizing camera parameters via our proposed bundle adjustment method. These additional constraints from the chessboard are developed to overcome an overfitting issue of wand-based calibration discovered by benchmarking its 3D triangulation accuracy in an independent record against a ground-truth trajectory and not on the record used for calibration itself. Addressing this overfitting issue in bundle adjustment leads to significant improvements in both 3D accuracy and result consistency. As a by-product of this development, a new benchmarking workflow and our calibration dataset that reflects realistic 3D accuracy are proposed and made publicly available to allow for fair comparisons of various calibration methods in the future. Additionally, our experiment highlights a significant benefit of a ray distance-based (RDB) triangulation formula over the popular direct linear transformation (DLT) method.

BackgroundThis study aimed to identify and quantify the kinematic and kinetic gait deviations in post-stroke hemiplegic patients with matched healthy controls using Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM).MethodsFifteen chronic stroke patients [4 females, 11 males; age 53.7 (standard deviation 12.2) years; body mass 65.4 (10.4) kg; standing height 168.5 (9.6) cm] and 15 matched healthy controls [4 females, 11 males; age 52.9 (11.7) years; body weight 66.5 (10.7) years; standing height 168.3 (8.8) cm] were recruited. In a 10-m walking task, joint angles, ground reaction forces (GRF), and joint moments were collected, analyzed, and compared using SPM for an entire gait cycle.ResultsGenerally, when comparing the stroke patients’ affected (hemiplegic) and less-affected (contralateral) limbs with the control group, SPM identified significant differences in the late stance phase and early swing phase in the joint angles and moments in bilateral limbs (all p

Research-based blended learning (RBBL) allows students to be part of an authentic scientific discovery process. In this study, students' perception and motivation of the RBBL coupled with Scrum methodology in a third-year polytechnic chemistry laboratory course were investigated. Results showed that the scaffolded approach, designed referencing the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework and learning presence, developed students' technical and process skills (adaptability, critical thinking, and problem solving skills). With the positive student-instructor interaction experienced by the students, they were confident, engaged, and motivated to work on the research project despite its complexity.

Abstract Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) is a peptide hormone that regulates blood pressure and volume. ANP interacts with natriuretic peptide receptor-A (NPR-A) to lower the blood pressure through vasodilation, diuresis and natriuresis. Previously, we designed two human ANP analogues, one with exclusively diuretic function (DGD-ANP) and the other with exclusively vasodilatory function (DRD-ANP). Although both ANP analogues interact with NPR-A, their ability to produce cGMP was different. Three alternatively spliced isoforms of NPR-A were previously identified in rodents. Here, we evaluated the putative human isoforms for their cGMP production independently and in combination with WT NPR-A in various percentages. All three NPR-A isoforms failed to produce cGMP in the presence of ANP, DGD-ANP, or DRD-ANP. Co-expression of isoforms with WT NPR-A were found to significantly impair cGMP production. Considering the differential tissue expression levels of all three spliced isoforms in rodents have previously been demonstrated, the existence of these non-functional receptor isoforms may act as negative regulator for ANP/NPR-A activation and fine-tune cGMP production by WT NPR-A to different degree in different tissues. Thus, NPR-A isoforms potentially contribute to tissue-specific functions of ANP.

Objective: This report aims to compare the effectiveness between electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and transcranial direct stimulation (tDCS) among patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and the associated factors. Methods: This was a secondary data analysis of a randomized, controlled, open-label trial conducted from 1 July 2018, to 31 December 2018. The dataset of 90 patients included in the study was retrieved from Mendeley Data. Patients with TRD were randomized 1:1 into either receiving ECT or tDCS. A good treatment response was determined as an improvement from the Hamilton Depression (HAM-D) baseline score at a rate of more than or equal to 50% at the end of a 2-week intervention. A mixed-effect logistic regression was performed to explain the hierarchical data structure of predictors to successful treatment outcome. Results: The largest magnitude of change was consistently observed in the ECT treatment arm across both HAM-D score and the clinical global impression severity scale (CGI-S) scale (p < 0.001). Lower baseline HAM-D scores (OR: 0.72, 95% CI: 0.58, 0.92), lower baseline CGI-S scale (OR: 0.30, 95% CI: 0.17, 0.55), and ECT as the choice of treatment modality (OR: 14.0, 95% CI: 5.08, 38.58) independently predicted successful therapy among TRD patients, while modelling with multiple logistic regression determined that low socio-economic status (aOR: 20.01, 95% CI: 1.89, 211.47), ECT (aOR: 31.7, 95% CI: 6.32, 159.0) and a lower baseline CGI-S scale (aOR: 0.18, 95% CI: 0.06, 0.57) were significantly predictive of a positive treatment outcome among patients with TRD. Conclusions: ECT was more effective in alleviating depressive symptoms in TRD as compared to tDCS.

Post-operative radiotherapy for post-menopausal women with early breast cancer and N1 disease is controversial. Although locoregional control is improved, overall survival (OS) benefit is unclear. The clinical benefit of post-operative irradiation in this group of patients over 10 years was reviewed. We aimed to evaluate the OS, disease-free survival (DFS), and factors affecting OS and DFS. A retrospective review of 191 post-menopausal women with early breast cancer and N1 disease from 2004 to 2011 was performed. Demographics, post-operative histology, adjuvant treatment, OS, and DFS were evaluated. Post-operative radiation was given to 95 of 191 women (49.7%). Younger age at diagnosis (p < 0.001), a greater number of involved nodes (p = 0.004), lymphovascular invasion (LVI), and a higher tumor grade (p = 0.001) were more likely in women who received post-operative radiation. Nodal radiation did not improve 10-year DFS (p = 0.084) or OS (p = 0.203). Post-operative nodal radiation was associated with significant improvement in 10-year OS in women who received only hormonal therapy (p = 0.047) and no other systemic therapy. Women with unfavorable risk factors were more likely to receive post-operative radiation, likely due to a perceived higher risk of recurrence. Nodal radiation did not significantly improve 10-year DFS or OS in early breast cancer patients with N1 disease, and the benefit was not clearly demonstrated. However, in those who were on hormonal therapy, radiotherapy was beneficial in improving overall survival.

ObjectiveIn Malaysia, there is now a dearth of recommendations pertaining to the priority of biologic treatments for the effective management of psoriasis, given the multitude of available therapeutic alternatives. Present analysis reports results of a cost-effectiveness model that determines the most optimal arrangement of biologic treatments, with a particular focus of adding biosimilars to the existing treatment pathway for psoriasis in Malaysia.MethodsA Markov model was developed to compare the cost effectiveness of various biologic sequential treatments in a hypothetical cohort of moderate to severe psoriasis patient in Malaysia over a lifetime horizon. The model simulated the progression of patients through three lines of active biologic therapy, before transitioning to best supportive care. Costs and effects were discounted annually at a rate of 3%.ResultsFirst line secukinumab has produced lowest incremental cost effectiveness ratios (ICERs) when compared to first line systemic [ICERs value; US$152,474 (first set analysis) and US$110,572 (second set analysis)] and first line phototherapy [ICERs value; US$147,057 (first set analysis) and US$107,616 (second set analysis)]. However, these values were slightly higher than the Malaysian based threshold of three times gross domestic product per capita, US$104,337. A 40% reduction in the unit costs of reference biologics renders most of the evaluated treatment sequences cost-effective.ConclusionAdding biosimilar to the current treatment sequence could achieve cost savings ranging from 4.3% to 10.8% without significant loss of effectiveness. Given the significant impact of comorbidities and the resulting decline in quality of life among individuals with psoriasis, it may be justifiable to establish a threshold of up to US$184,000 per quality-adjusted life year (QALY) for the provision of therapies in the context of Malaysia.

Abstract Background Aging degrades the balance and locomotion ability due to frailty and pathological conditions. This demands balance rehabilitation and assistive technologies that help the affected population to regain mobility, independence, and improve their quality of life. While many overground gait rehabilitation and assistive robots exist in the market, none are designed to be used at home or in community settings. Methods A device named Mobile Robotic Balance Assistant (MRBA) is developed to address this problem. MRBA is a hybrid of a gait assistive robot and a powered wheelchair. When the user is walking around performing activities of daily living, the robot follows the person and provides support at the pelvic area in case of loss of balance. It can also be transformed into a wheelchair if the user wants to sit down or commute. To achieve instability detection, sensory data from the robot are compared with a predefined threshold; a fall is identified if the value exceeds the threshold. The experiments involve both healthy young subjects and an individual with spinal cord injury (SCI). Spatial Parametric Mapping is used to assess the effect of the robot on lower limb joint kinematics during walking. The instability detection algorithm is evaluated by calculating the sensitivity and specificity in identifying normal walking and simulated falls. Results When walking with MRBA, the healthy subjects have a lower speed, smaller step length and longer step time. The SCI subject experiences similar changes as well as a decrease in step width that indicates better stability. Both groups of subjects have reduced joint range of motion. By comparing the force sensor measurement with a calibrated threshold, the instability detection algorithm can identify more than 93% of self-induced falls with a false alarm rate of 0%. Conclusions While there is still room for improvement in the robot compliance and the instability identification, the study demonstrates the first step in bringing gait assistive technologies into homes. We hope that the robot can encourage the balance-impaired population to engage in more activities of daily living to improve their quality of life. Future research includes recruiting more subjects with balance difficulty to further refine the device functionalities.

Abstract Waste cooking oil (WCO) appears to be a potential carbonaceous source for synthesizing graphene sand composite (GSC) adsorbent in removing pollutants. This study presents a green synthesis method of GSC using WCO as a sustainable carbon source for the synthesis of GSC through the thermal graphitization method. Characterization analysis conducted on GSCWCO verified the successful coating of WCO onto the sand surface and conversion to graphene, which possessed distinct functional groups and features of graphene materials. GSCWCO adsorbent effectiveness in removing Congo Red dye through batch adsorption was studied under the influence of different initial concentrations (20 to 100 mg/L), and the optimum pH (pH 2 to 10), contact time (5 to 240 min), and temperature (25 to 45 °C) were investigated. The GSCWCO showed removal rates of 91.5% achieved at an initial dye concentration of 20 mg L−1, 1.0 g of adsorbent dosage, a temperature of 25 °C, and 150 min of contact time. The GSCWCO exhibited a maximum capacity of 5.52 mg g−1, was well-fitted to the Freundlich isotherm model with an R2 value of 0.989 and had an adsorption mechanism that followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Negative values of enthalpy (ΔH) and Gibbs free energy (ΔG) revealed that CR adsorption onto GSCWCO was a spontaneous and exothermic process. The presence of functional groups on the surface of GSCWCO with such interactions (π–π attractive forces, hydrophobic forces, and hydrogen bonding) was responsible for the anionic dye removal. Regeneration of GSCWCO adsorbent declined after four cycles, possibly due to the chemisorption of dyes with GSC that resulted in inefficient adsorption. Being a waste-to-wealth product, GSCWCO possessed great potential to be used for water treatment and simultaneously benefited the environment through the effort to reduce the excessive discharge of WCO.

Abstract Clinical gait analysis is an important biomechanics field that is often influenced by subjectivity in time-varying analysis leading to type I and II errors. Statistical Parametric Mapping can operate on all time-varying joint dynamics simultaneously, thereby overcoming subjectivity errors. We present MovementRx, the first gait analysis modelling application that correctly models the deviations of joints kinematics and kinetics both in 3 and 1 degrees of freedom; presented with easy-to-understand color maps for clinicians with limited statistical training. MovementRx is a python-based versatile GUI-enabled movement analysis decision support system, that provides a holistic view of all lower limb joints fundamental to the kinematic/kinetic chain related to functional gait. The user can cascade the view from single 3D multivariate result down to specific single joint individual 1D scalar movement component in a simple, coherent, objective, and visually intuitive manner. We highlight MovementRx benefit by presenting a case-study of a right knee osteoarthritis (OA) patient with otherwise undetected postintervention contralateral OA predisposition. MovementRx detected elevated frontal plane moments of the patient’s unaffected knee. The patient also revealed a surprising adverse compensation to the contralateral limb.

Pro-environmental behaviour is imperative to promote sustainable management and consumption of energy in the fight against climate change. The Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) has been widely used to explain and predict behaviour in a multitude of behavioural domains including pro-environmental behaviour. However, the TPB does not prioritise the influence of knowledge and habits on pro-environmental behaviour. Past studies also confirmed the influence of cultural factors in predicting environmental intent and behaviour, which were not covered by TPB. Considering that Malaysia is a multicultural country, on top of the environmental education factors, cognitive competencies, and affective factors, the influence of values that contribute to the pro-environmental intention behaviour on energy conservation has also to be considered. Hence, this study employed Fuzzy Delphi Method to determine the indicators explaining the effects of educational and psychological factors on pro-environmental behaviour. It was hypothesized that educational factors, cognitive competencies and affective factors influence secondary students' pro-environmental behaviour on energy conservation. The students' cultural viewpoint was also proposed as the regulating effect on their energy conservation behaviour. A total of 25 experts were selected to validate the questionnaire developed. The items/constructs developed were environmental factors (formal, non-formal and informal educations), cognitive factors, affective factors (attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioural control and civic values) and environmental conservation behaviour. The value construct, which comprised of values of empathy, respect, cooperation, responsibility, justice, equality, integrity, and altruism. Majority of the items/constructs were accepted by the experts. This reflects that the items/constructs developed were relevant to the study as the experts agreed with these items/constructs.

Background/Purpose: To date, there are no published validated Chinese versions of the incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT) instructions despite its wide clinical applications. Translation of the Chinese ISWT instruction is done in an ad-hoc manner within the Chinese-speaking populations, affecting the test’s reliability and validity since translation can differ significantly between individuals. This warrants the need for psychometric testing of such translation. Objectives: To develop a Chinese (Mandarin) version of the ISWT instructions (ISWT-CHN) that is conceptually equivalent to the original English version (ISWT-ENG) and establish its reliability and validity. Methods: Forward and backward translations from the ISWT-ENG were done to generate the ISWT-CHN. Face and content validity was determined during the translation process. Intra-rater and inter-rater reliability of the ISWT-CHN, construct and criterion validity were established by analysing the ISWT and the gold standard cardiopulmonary exercise test results. Results: The Item-Content validity index (I-CVI), Scale-level-Content validity index (S-CVI), and content validity ratio (CVR) of the ISWT-CHN were 1.0. Intra-class Correlation Coefficient (ICC) for inter-rater reliability between two raters were excellent ([Formula: see text], 95% CI 0.97–1.0, [Formula: see text]; [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]m, [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]m). The intra-rater reliability of both Raters A ([Formula: see text], 95% CI 0.53–0.98, [Formula: see text]; [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]m, [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]m) and B ([Formula: see text], 95% CI 0.76–0.96, [Formula: see text]; [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]m, [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]m) were good. In a sample of 32 healthy participants, both ISWT-CHN and ISWT-ENG instruction results showed low-positive correlations with the VO[Formula: see text] determined from the cardiopulmonary exercise test ([Formula: see text] = 0.439, [Formula: see text]; [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text]). There is a very high correlation between ISWT-ENG and ISWT-CHN results with no statistically significant differences ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text]). The construct and criterion validity of the ISWT-CHN were established. Conclusion: This study developed the ISWT-CHN and showed that it is a valid and reliable measure conceptually comparable to the ISWT-ENG. It will benefit the determination of functional exercise capacity in Chinese-speaking populations. Key messages •This study is aimed to develop a Chinese (Mandarin) version of the ISWT instructions. •The ISWT Chinese translation is valid and reliable that is conceptually comparable to the original English instruction. •The translated ISWT-Chinese instruction will enable the use of ISWT among the Chinese-speaking populations.

Coronavirus causes a global pandemic that has adversely affected public health, the economy, including every life aspect. To manage the spread, innumerable measurements are gathered. Administering vaccines is considered to be among the precautionary steps under the blueprint. Among all vaccines, the messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) vaccines provide notable effectiveness with minimal side effects. However, it is easily degraded and limits its application. Therefore, considering the cruciality of predicting the degradation rate of the mRNA vaccine, this prediction study is proposed. In addition, this study compared the hybridizing sequence of the hybrid model to identify its influence on prediction performance. Five models are created for exploration and prediction on the COVID-19 mRNA vaccine dataset provided by Stanford University and made accessible on the Kaggle community platform employing the two deep learning algorithms, Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) as well as Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU). The Mean Columnwise Root Mean Square Error (MCRMSE) performance metric was utilized to assess each model’s performance. Results demonstrated that both GRU and LSTM are befitting for predicting the degradation rate of COVID-19 mRNA vaccines. Moreover, performance improvement could be achieved by performing the hybridization approach. Among Hybrid_1, Hybrid_2, and Hybrid_3, when trained with Set_1 augmented data, Hybrid_3 with the lowest training error (0.1257) and validation error (0.1324) surpassed the other two models; the same for model training with Set_2 augmented data, scoring 0.0164 and 0.0175 MCRMSE for training error and validation error, respectively. The variance in results obtained by hybrid models from experimenting claimed hybridizing sequence of algorithms in hybrid modeling should be concerned.

A total diet study is often used to evaluate a population’s baseline dietary exposure to chemical hazards from across the diet. In 2021–2023, Singapore carried out a TDS, and this article presents an overview of the study design and methodological selections in Singapore’s TDS, as well as its relevance to ensuring food safety. A food consumption survey was conducted on Singapore citizens and permanent residents, where food consumption patterns of the Singapore population were identified. The selection of chemical hazards and foods for inclusion in Singapore’s TDS, as well as principal considerations on sampling, food preparation, and analytical testing are discussed. Commonly consumed foods by the Singapore population in food categories such as grain and grain-based products, meat and meat products, fish and seafood, vegetables, fruits, milk and dairy products were included in this study, and mean concentrations of chemicals tested in each food category were reported, with food categories possessing higher levels identified. Future work will include dietary exposure assessments for the population and analysis of the contributions by food and cooking method.

Students’ learning experience and their engagement in online learning environments are becoming increasingly important as blended learning grows more prevalent in tertiary education. In this study, asynchronous lectures for applied sciences courses, offered to polytechnic students of Applied Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Science at Nanyang Polytechnic, were designed using the Community of Inquiry framework. Students’ perceptions of their learning experience and cognitive, emotional, and behavioral engagement in asynchronous lectures were determined through a survey study. The results showed that students were engaged and had positive learning experiences. Through an educational design research methodology, this survey study also determined and provided design features important for designing asynchronous lectures. Further research could explore the possibility of expanding the scope of the research to other institutions with students of different cultural backgrounds, learning preferences, and learning abilities.

Abstract Background Insightful feedback generation for daily home-based stroke rehabilitation is currently unavailable due to the inefficiency of exercise inspection done by therapists. We aim to produce a compact anomaly representation that allows a therapist to pay attention to only a few specific sections in a long exercise session record and boost their efficiency in feedback generation. Methods This study proposes a data-driven technique to model a repetitive exercise using unsupervised phase learning on an artificial neural network and statistical learning on principal component analysis (PCA). After a model is built on a set of normal healthy movements, the model can be used to extract a sequence of anomaly scores from a movement of the same prescription. Results The method not only works on a standard marker-based motion capture system but also performs well on a more compact and affordable motion capture system based-on Kinect V2 and wrist-worn inertial measurement units that can be used at home. An evaluation of four different exercises shows its potential in separating anomalous movements from normal ones with an average area under the curve (AUC) of 0.9872 even on the compact motion capture system. Conclusions The proposed processing technique has the potential to help clinicians in providing high-quality feedback for telerehabilitation in a more scalable way.

The present study systematically investigated the influence of synthesis conditions (duration, reaction medium, and doping concentration) and formation mechanism of carbon dots (CDs) derived from low-cost and abundant biomass palm kernel shell (PKS). Surprisingly, the dopant (urea) did not enhance the photoluminescence of CDs as expected, which could be attributed to the low reactivity between the dopant and PKS macromolecules. Variation of synthesis duration from 30 to 120 s clearly indicated the formation mechanism of CDs, involving the stages of dehydration, carbonization, and nucleation. The CDs with the highest photoluminescent intensity and quantum yield was obtained at synthesis duration of 90 s, aligned well with the perfect spherical shape of CDs and the synergistic effects of both surface and carbogenic core conditions. Understanding the formation mechanism could be used to optimize the synthesis of CDs, and hence linked to quantum yield and fluorescent intensity. In terms of application potential, the CDs illuminated well as fluorescent ink and in bacteria cells imaging. The potential of CDs as sensing material has also been proven with the quenching of fluorescence in the presence of metal ions. The linear range for detection of Cu2+ ions was 0.1–0.5 mM with a detection limit as low as 0.05 mM. This signifies the potential of CDs fabricated from PKS as a low-cost and easily available material for Cu2+ ions detection in aqueous solution. The CDs possessed reasonable photo stability as indicated by its consistent fluorescence level even after exposure to UV radiation for a prolonged period of 180 minutes. Overall, a simple, straightforward, and fast method is developed to synthesis strong blue emissive CDs from green PKS that are potentially suitable for Cu2+ ions sensing in real application.

This study investigated the prevalence and occurrence of 3-monochloropropanediol esters (3-MCPDEs) and glycidyl esters (GEs) in domestically and commercially prepared food in Singapore and assessed the total dietary exposure for the Singaporean population. Minimal impact on the formation of 3-MCPDEs and GEs was observed from the domestic cooking methods commonly practiced in Singapore such as deep frying and stir frying. The estimated total dietary exposure to 3-MCPDEs for the Singaporean population (aged 15 to 92) was 0.982 µg/kg bw/day for general consumers and 2.212 µg/kg bw/day for high consumers (95th percentile), which accounted for 49.1% and 110.6% of the tolerable dietary intake (TDI) at 2 µg/kg bw/day by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). The calculated margins of exposure (MOE) for GEs based on the dietary exposure for general consumers at 0.882 µg/kg bw/day and 2.209 µg/kg bw/day for high consumers were below 10,000, indicating a potential health concern. Our study showed that the occurrence of 3-MCPDEs and GEs varied among vegetable oils, and domestic cooking methods did not significantly impact the levels of 3-MCPDEs and GEs in prepared food. The critical factor influencing the prevalence and occurrence of 3-MCPDEs and GEs was the choice of oil used for cooking, which absorbed into the cooked food. It is essential to encourage the food industry to continue its innovation on mitigation measures to control and reduce 3-MCPDEs and GEs in vegetable oil production. Consumers are advised to make informed choices on food consumption and cooking oil for food preparation to reduce their exposure to 3-MCPDEs and GEs.

Abstract COVID‐19 has heightened the dependence of urban dwellers on cultural ecosystem services provided by urban green spaces (UGS), specifically in regard to the provision of recreational opportunities, and psychological and physical health benefits arising from their use. As different types and levels of cultural ecosystem services are provided by different types of UGS, people may seek out different UGS to satisfy personal needs over various phases of COVID‐19 mobility restrictions imposed by cities. We report on a study that took advantage of the different phases of COVID‐19 mobility restrictions to assess the demand for and perception of different types of UGS in Singapore. The study utilised four datasets to compare demand for and visitorship patterns of UGS before the pandemic (Pre‐Circuit Breaker), the duration of the strictest mobility restrictions (Circuit Breaker), and after the measures were relaxed (Post‐Circuit Breaker). We used Google Search trends as a proxy for UGS demand, Google mobility data for an overview of population visitorship trends, visitor counts for granular insights on actual visitorship trends, and qualitative data on perception of parks by park visitors after restrictions eased. Parks were categorised as manicured and less manicured UGS for analysis. Search interest for UGS overall fell by more than 50% from during Circuit Breaker but the post‐Circuit Breaker levels exceeded pre‐Circuit Breaker, with a 70.9% increase for less manicured UGS compared to 20.8% for manicured UGS. This corroborated with Google mobility and visitor counts, which showed a steep decrease in park use followed by a rapid increase in the same periods, and with increased visitorship in the less manicured UGS. The perception study also showed that more than 50% of respondents reported visiting parks that they have never visited before, and there was a greater appreciation and use of UGS after the pandemic and preference for less manicured and more naturalistic landscapes. The pandemic has heightened the demand for cultural ecosystem services provided by UGS. Our study showed that this demand is not uniform across different types of UGS, with an increase visitorship and preference for less manicured green spaces. Abstract Background Psychiatric pharmaceutical care is the provision of pharmaceutical care services to patients with psychiatric related illnesses or disorders. Several studies have demonstrated the positive influence psychiatric pharmaceutical care on patients’ clinical, humanistic and economic outcomes. This study aimed to examine the extent of psychiatric pharmaceutical care practice in a convenience sample of Malaysian government hospitals and the barriers to the provision of these services. Methods An anonymous cross-sectional survey of registered pharmacists working at a convenience sample of government hospitals in Malaysia was undertaken from September 2019 to June 2020. Results Pharmacists frequently ensured the appropriateness of the dose (55%), dosage form (47%) and dosing schedule (48%) of the dispensed medications. Most pharmacists infrequently worked with patients and healthcare professionals to develop a pharmacotherapeutic regimen and a corresponding monitoring plan (28%). There was no statistically significant difference in the provision of pharmaceutical care services with respect to gender, age, years of practice, and professional board certification. However, the services offered were influenced by the respondent’s education and pharmacy setting. The obstacles perceived by pharmacists included lack of time (89%), shortage of pharmacy staff (87%), the patients’ inability to comprehend medical information (85%), insufficient demand and acceptance by patients (82%), the lack of official policies and standardised practice protocols (78%), inaccessibility to the patients’ medical records (77%) and the lack of structured communication channels between pharmacists and physicians (75%), the pharmacists lack of knowledge/skills and confidence (78%) and insufficient recognition from physicians to the pharmacists’ skills (76%). Conclusions This is the first study to explore the extent and barriers of psychiatric pharmaceutical care in Malaysian hospitals; it highlighted the need for mobilising pharmacists to expand these services.
