This study derives radiatively-active hydrometeors frequencies (HFs) from CloudSat-CALIPSO satellite data to evaluate cloud fraction in present-day simulations by CMIP5 models. Most CMIP5 models do not consider precipitating and/or convective hydrometeors but CESM1-CAM5 in CMIP5 has diagnostic snow and CESM2-CAM6 in CMIP6 has prognostic precipitating ice (snow) included. However, the models do not have snow fraction available for evaluation. Since the satellite-retrieved hydrometeors include the mixtures of floating, precipitating and convective ice and liquid particles, a filtering method is applied to produce estimates of cloud-only HF (or NPCHF) from the total radiatively-active HF (THF), which is the sum of NPCHF, precipitating ice HF and convective HF. The reference HF data for model evaluation include estimates of liquid-phase NPCHF from CloudSat radar-only data (2B-CWC) and ice-phase THF from CloudSat-CALIPSO 2C-ICE combined radar/lidar data. The model evaluation results show that cloud fraction from CMIP5 multi-model mean (MMM) is significantly underestimated (up to 30 %) against the total HF estimates, mainly below the mid-troposphere over the extratropics and in the upper-troposphere over the midlatitude lands and a few tropical convective regions. The CMIP5 cloud fraction biases are reduced dramatically when compared to the cloud-only HF estimates, but the area of overestimates expands from the tropical convective regions to mid-latitudes in the lower and upper troposphere. There is no CMIP5 standard output snow fraction available for comparison against CloudSat-CALIPSO estimate. The implications of these results show that hydrometeors frequency estimates from CloudSat-CALIPSO provide a reference for GCM’s cloud fraction from stratiform and convective form.

A one-column, turbulent, and kinetic-energy-type ocean mixed-layer model (snow–ice–thermocline, SIT), when coupled with three atmospheric general circulation models (AGCMs), yields superior Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) simulations. SIT is designed to have fine layers similar to those observed near the ocean surface; therefore, it can realistically simulate the diurnal warm layer and cool skin. This refined discretization of the near-surface ocean in SIT provides accurate sea surface temperature (SST) simulation, and thus facilitates realistic air–sea interaction. Coupling SIT with the European Centre/Hamburg Model version 5, the Community Atmosphere Model version 5, and the High-Resolution Atmospheric Model significantly improved MJO simulation in three coupled AGCMs compared to the AGCM driven by a prescribed SST. This study suggests two major improvements to the coupling process. First, during the preconditioning phase of MJO over the Maritime Continent (MC), the often underestimated surface latent heat bias in AGCMs can be corrected. Second, during the phase of strongest convection over the MC, the change in intraseasonal circulation in the meridional circulation enhancing near-surface moisture convergence is the dominant factor in the coupled simulations relative to the uncoupled experiments. The study results show that a fine vertical resolution near the surface, which better captures temperature variations in the upper few meters of the ocean, considerably improves different models with different configurations and physical parameterization schemes; this could be an essential factor for accurate MJO simulation.

This study compares radiation-circulation coupling over tropical and subtropical oceans by examining ice water path, radiation, low-level wind, and precipitation fields from the uncoupled prescribed sea surface temperature AMIP6 and the fullycoupled CMIP6 historical runs. Ice water path of the CMIP6 ensemble shows a closer agreement than the AMP6 ensemble, particularly in the subtropics. The inclusion of falling ice (snow) radiative effects (FIREs), in general, improves simulation of radiation, low-level wind, and precipitation fields over the northwest Pacific, Southeast Pacific Convergence Zone (SPCZ), equatorial eastern Pacific and Atlantic Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). When both AMIP6 and CMIP6 models are divided into two groups with inclusion and exclusion of FIREs, the impact of FIREs is most pronounced in ITCZ and the subtropical trade-wind regions in CMIP6 but over the tropical Pacific and SPCZ in AMIP6. This suggests that active ocean plays a significant role in radiation-circulation coupling. The CMIP6 models with FIREs have less over-estimated biases in upward longwave radiation over the convective zones in Pacific and Atlantic and less low-level divergence of anomalous flows over convective zones, i.e., stronger trade winds. The circulation changes stronger in CMIP6 over the trade wind regions than in AMIP6, which suggests that the role of active ocean is important in testing an improved physical process in models. This conclusion is also supported by more systematic improvements in groups of models with inclusion of FIREs in CMIP6 than in AMIP6, hinting the important roles of FIREs in radiationcirculation coupling.

The falling ice (snow) radiative effects (FIREs) have previously been shown to contribute substantially to reduced discrepancies in simulations of present-day climatology of radiation, skin temperatures and sea ice concentration and thickness over the Southern Ocean. This study extends to examine the impacts of FIREs on simulation of sea ice changes under a scenario of gradual increase of atmospheric CO2 concentration. We perform a pair of sensitivity experiments including (CESM1-SoN) and excluding (CESM1-NoS) FIREs using Community Earth System Model version 1. The differences in the annual and seasonal means between the initial and warmer periods are examined. Relative to CESM1-SoN, CESM1-NoS simulates more surface reflected shortwave and less downward longwave radiative warming, as well as colder surface temperature, resulting in larger annual-mean sea ice extent and thickness and slower seasonal and long-term sea ice melting and thinning. Over the Southern Ocean of CESM1-SoN, reduced downwelling longwave radiation in austral winter (June-July-August: JJA) leads to sea-ice growth with colder skin temperature while reduced net radiation resulting from increased shortwave reflection in austral summer reduces the melting of sea ice with little change in skin temperature. CESM1-NoS shows seasonal and long-term trends similar to those in CMIP5 models that exclude FIREs, hinting slower future warming-driven changes and larger amplitude of the annual cycle in sea ice concentration and thickness. The ice-free Southern Ocean in peak melting season is simulated at approximately year 130 for CESM1-NoS but year 100 for CESM1-SoN, about 30 years later than that of the Arctic.

A new k-distribution scheme of longwave radiation without the correlated-k-distribution assumption is developed. Grouping of spectral points is based on the line-by-line (LBL)-calculated absorption coefficient k at a few sets of reference pressure pr and temperature θr, where the cooling rate is substantial in a spectral band. In this new scheme, the range of k(pr, θr) of a band is divided into a number of equal intervals, or g groups, in log10(kr). A spectral point at the wavenumber ν is identified with one of the g groups according to its kν(pr, θr). For each g group, a Planck-weighted k-distribution function Hg and a nonlinearly averaged absorption coefficient k¯g⁡(p,θ) are derived. The function Hg and the absorption coefficient k¯g⁡(p,θ) constitute the new k-distribution scheme. In this k-distribution scheme, a spectral point can only be identified with a g group regardless of pressure and temperature, which is different from the correlated-k distribution scheme. The k-distribution scheme is applied to the H2O, CO2, O3, N2O, and CH4 absorption bands, and results are compared with LBL calculations. An NC-FIC nonfullerene acceptor, using a didodecylnaphthodithiophene (NDT) embedded octacyclic ladder-type donor NC, had been described previously. In this work, a new cross-shaped TC-FIC nonfullerene acceptor is designed by substitution of the NDT unit in the NC skeleton with a 2-dimensional didodecyltetrathienonaphthalene (TTN) unit. The 2-dimensional TC π-system with two vertically fused thiophenes strengthens the electron-donating ability, promotes π-electron delocalization and enhances intramolecular donor–acceptor charge transfer and intermolecular π–π interactions. As a result, TC-FIC shows more red-shifted and widened absorption compared to the NC-FIC counterpart. The PBDB-T:TC-FIC device exhibits a higher efficiency of 11.6% which greatly outperformed the corresponding PBDB-T:NC-FIC device with an efficiency of 7.52%. The dramatic 54% enhancement in efficiency is ascribed to the improved light-harvesting ability and enhanced charge mobilities which are benefited from the central 2-dimensional TTN moiety. By incorporating PC71BM to improve absorption and electron transport, the ternary-blend PBDB-T : TC-FIC : PC71BM device (1 : 1 : 1 in wt%) achieves a highest PCE of 13.49% with an enhanced Jsc of 23.80 mA cm−2, an FF of 64.4%, and a Voc of 0.88 V.

This study attempts to infer the linkage of sea surface height anomaly (SSHA), surface wind stress and sea surface temperature with the falling ice (snow) radiative effects (FIREs) over the tropical and subtropical Pacific Ocean using CESM1-CAM5 sensitivity experiments with FIREs-off (NOS) and on (SON) under CMIP5 historical run. The obs4MIPs monthly SSH data based upon satellite measurements are used as a reference. The seasonal and annual mean spatial patterns of SSHA difference between NOS and SON are tightly linked to those of SST and TAU over the study domain, in particular, over the south Pacific. Compared with NOS, SON simulates improved seasonal and annual mean SSHA associated with improved sea surface temperature (SST), surface wind stress (TAU) over the trade-wind areas. In SON, the simulated mean absolute bias of SSHA over the study domain is reduced (up to 30%) against NOS relative to observations. The SSHA biases are then compared with CMIP5 models. Despite the biases of SST and SSHA over the south and north flanks of the equator in SON, the seasonal variations of improved SSHA are closely related to those of TAU and SST resulting from the FIREs; that is, higher SSHA is associated with weaker TAU and warmer SST changes and vice versa. The CMIP5 ensemble mean absolute biases of SSHA show similarities to NOS mainly over the south Pacific.

BackgroundLosing a child tragically impacts the well-being and functioning of parents. With these effects extending beyond emotional, physical morbidity and compromising self-perceptions, appropriate, longitudinal, timely and personalised support is key to effective care of bereaved parents. However, in the absence of a comprehensive understanding of parental bereavement, effective support of bereaved parents remains suboptimal. To address this gap, we scrutinise prevailing data on the effects of a child’s death, aged 0–12 years, through the lens of the Ring Theory of Personhood (RToP).MethodsTo study prevailing accounts of bereaved parents following the death of a child, we adopt Krishna’s Systematic Evidence Based Approach (SEBA) to structure our Systematic Scoping Review (SSR in SEBA).ResultsThree thousand seventy-four abstracts were reviewed, 160 full text articles were evaluated, and 111 articles were included and analysed using thematic and content analysis. Four themes/categories were identified relating to the four rings of the RToP. Findings reveal that static concepts of protective and risk factors for grief are misplaced and that the support of healthcare professionals is key to assisting bereaved parents.ConclusionIn the absence of consistent support of bereaved parents, this study highlights the need for effective training of healthcare professionals, beginning with an appreciation that every aspect of an individual parent’s personhood is impacted by the loss of their child. Acknowledging grief as a complex, evolving and personalised process subjected to parental characteristics, settings, context and available support, this SSR in SEBA calls attention to effective nurturing of the relationship between parents and healthcare professionals, and suggests use of the RToP to assess and direct personalised, timely, specific support of parents in evolving conditions. We believe the findings of this review also call for further studies to support healthcare professionals as they journey with bereaved parents.

This study evaluates the performance of the Taiwan Earth System Model version 1 (TaiESM1) in simulating the observed climate variability in the historical simulation of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Phase 6 (CMIP6). TaiESM1 is developed on the basis of the Community Earth System Model version 1.2.2, with the inclusion of several new physical schemes and improvements in the atmosphere model. The new additions include an improved triggering function in the cumulus convection scheme, a revised distribution‐based formula in the cloud fraction scheme, a new aerosol scheme, and a unique scheme for three‐dimensional surface absorption of shortwave radiation that accounts for the influence of complex terrains. In contrast to the majority of model evaluation processes, which focus mainly on the climatological mean, this evaluation focuses on climate variability parameters, including the diurnal rainfall cycle, precipitation extremes, synoptic eddy activity, intraseasonal fluctuation, monsoon evolution, and interannual and multidecadal atmospheric and oceanic teleconnection patterns. A series of intercomparisons between the simulations of TaiESM1 and CMIP6 models and observations indicate that TaiESM1, a participating model in CMIP6, can realistically simulate the observed climate variability at various time scales and are among the leading CMIP6 models in terms of many key climate features.

A new k-distribution scheme without the assumption of the correlation between the absorption coefficients at different pressures is developed for solar heating due to water vapor and CO2. Grouping of spectral points is based on the observation that radiation at spectral points with a large absorption coefficient is quickly absorbed to heat the stratosphere, and the heating below is attributable to the absorption of the solar radiation at the remaining spectral points. By grouping the spectral points with a large absorption coefficient at low pressures, the range of the absorption coefficient of the remaining spectral points is narrowed, and the k-distribution approximation can be accurately applied to compute solar heating in both the stratosphere and troposphere. Grouping of the spectral points is based on the absorption coefficient at a couple of reference pressures where heating is significant. With a total number of 52 spectral groups in the water vapor and CO2 bands, fluxes and heating rates were calculated for various solar zenith angles in some typical and sampled atmospheres in diverse climatic regimes and seasons. The maximum heating rate difference between the k-distribution and line-by-line calculations is < 0.09 K day-1 for water vapor, and < 0.2 K day-1 for CO2. The difference in the surface radiation is ~ 1.4 W m-2 for water vapor and 0.6 W m-2 for CO2, while it could increase to 2.6 W m-2 due to overlapping absorption. These results can be improved by increasing the number of spectral groups at the expense of computational economy.

The long-term effects of complex terrain on solar energy distributions and surface hydrology over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) are investigated using the 4th version of the global Community Climate System Model (CCSM4) coupled with a 3-D radiative transfer (RT) parameterization. We examine the differences between the results from CCSM4 with the 3-D RT parameterization and the results from CCSM4 with the plane-parallel RT scheme. In January (winter), the net surface solar flux (FSNS) displays negative deviations over valleys and the north slopes of mountains, especially in the northern margin of the TP, as a result of the 3-D shadow effect. Positive deviations in FSNS in January are found over the south slopes of mountains and over mountain tops, where more solar flux is intercepted. The deviations in total cloud fraction and snow water equivalent (SWE) exhibit patterns opposite to that of FSNS. The SWE decreases due to the 3-D mountain effect in spring and the magnitude of this effect depends on the terrain elevations. The SWE is reduced by 1–17 mm over the TP in April, with the largest decrease in SWE at an elevation of 3.5–4.5 km. Negative deviations in precipitation are found throughout the year, except in May and December, and they follow the seasonal variations in the deviations in total cloud fraction. The total liquid runoff at 3.5–4.5 km elevation increases in April due to earlier (March) snowmelt caused by increased downward solar radiation. The possible deviations in surface energy and SWE over the TP, caused by plane-parallel assumption in most climate models may result in biases in the liquid runoff and the river water resources over the TP and downstream.

Recent Arctic sea ice retreat has been quicker than in most general circulation model (GCM) simulations. Internal variability may have amplified the observed retreat in recent years, but reliable attribution and projection requires accurate representation of relevant physics. Most current GCMs do not fully represent falling ice radiative effects (FIREs), and here we show that the small set of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) models that include FIREs tend to show faster observed retreat. We investigate this using controlled simulations with the CESM1-CAM5 model. Under 1pctCO2 simulations, including FIREs results in the first occurrence of an “ice-free” Arctic (monthly mean extent <1×106 km2) at 550 ppm CO2, compared with 680 ppm otherwise. Over 60–90∘ N oceans, snowflakes reduce downward surface shortwave radiation and increase downward surface longwave radiation, improving agreement with the satellite-based CERES EBAF-Surface dataset. We propose that snowflakes' equivalent greenhouse effect reduces the mean sea ice thickness, resulting in a thinner pack whose retreat is more easily triggered by global warming. This is supported by the CESM1-CAM5 surface fluxes and a reduced initial thickness in perennial sea ice regions by approximately 0.3 m when FIREs are included. This explanation does not apply across the CMIP5 ensemble in which inter-model variation in the simulation of other processes likely dominates. Regardless, we show that FIRE can substantially change Arctic sea ice projections and propose that better including falling ice radiative effects in models is a high priority.

We evaluate the simulations of surface wind stress (TAU) and sea surface temperature (SST) over subtropical and tropical Pacific and Atlantic oceans in subsets of CMIP6 models that are categorized by frozen hydrometeors-radiation interactions. The CMIP6 models are divided into two subsets with combined (SON1) and separated (SON2) radiative properties of cloud ice and falling ice (snow) and compared to the set with cloud ice radiative effects only (NOS). There is evidence that these hydrometeors-radiation interaction treatments induce different atmospheric dynamic responses that influence the surface properties. Excessive westerly TAU and meridional TAU divergence away from convective zones are reduced significantly in SON1 and SON2 relative to NOS against QuikSCAT observations; while the differences between SON2 and SON1 are small. SON2 reduces cold SST biases over north oceans and equatorial zones drastically (1 to 2 K), and warm biases (up to 1 K) off the coasts of America and zonal TAU biases are reduced relative to NOS. Unlike SON2, SON1 improves SSTs mainly over south of Pacific Ocean and limited areas over the tropical belts relative to NOS although TAU is reduced drastically as in SON2, implying that other factors play a role in degrading the SST simulations in SON1 relative to SON2. SON2 outperforms NOS and SON1 in the seasonal cycles of SST mean biases and mean absolute biases averaged over the equatorial area, north ocean, and South Pacific against ERSST observations. Despite the significant improvements in TAU and SST simulations, SON2 models still exhibit non-trivial biases over south and north flanks of equatorial zones. These results suggest that there are direct linkages of TAU with SST changes resulting from the hydrometeors-radiation interactions in SON2, but not in SON1, relative to NOS, implying that a separated treatment of cloud ice and falling ice radiative properties in climate models is preferred.

Context Caring for dying neonates is distressing for healthcare professionals (HCP)s. Yet, the extent of these effects is poorly understood, compromising support of HCPs. To better understand and support HCPs, a systematic scoping review (SSR) of prevailing data is proposed. Objectives In mapping prevailing data on the impact of caring for dying neonates on HCPs, an SSR proffers new insights on changes to their beliefs, values, coping, actions, relationships and self-concepts of personhood. Methods Krishna's Systematic Evidenced Based Approach (SEBA) supports a robust, reproducible review whilst its constructivist approach and relativist lens effectively contends with diverse data sources, facilitating a holistic study. Results A total of 9826 abstracts were reviewed and 69 articles were included. Thematic and content analysis were used simultanously. The four categories drawn from the Ring Theory of Personhood (RToP) complements the four themes identified: Emotional and Physical Difficulties, Coping Mechanisms, Conflict and Recommendations. Conclusion In highlighting significant longitudinal effects upon all aspects of their lives, this SSR in SEBA reveals a critical need for timely, appropriate and personalized support. We recommend adapting the RToP as an assessment tool to identify and evaluate the needs of these HCPs. It may also be used to structure a holistic support mechanism. Future studies are required to validate its use and appraise other aspects of support available for HCPs.

Topography exerts significant influences on the incoming solar radiation at the land surface. A few stand-alone regional and global atmospheric models have included parameterizations for sub-grid topographic effects on solar radiation. However, nearly all Earth system models (ESMs) that participated in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) use a plane-parallel (PP) radiative transfer scheme that assumes that the terrain is flat. In this study, we incorporated a well-validated sub-grid topographic (TOP) parameterization in the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) Land Model (ELM) version 1.0 to quantify the effects of sub-grid topography on solar radiation flux, including the shadow effects and multi-scattering between adjacent terrain. We studied the role of sub-grid topography by performing ELM simulations with the PP and TOP schemes over the Tibetan Plateau (TP). Additional ELM simulations were performed at multiple spatial resolutions to investigate the role of spatial scale on sub-grid topographic effects on solar radiation. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data was used to compare with the ELM simulations. The results show that topography has non-negligible effects on surface energy budget, snow cover, snow depth, and surface temperature over the TP. The absolute differences in surface energy fluxes for net solar radiation, latent heat flux, and sensible heat flux between TOP and PP exceed 20, 10, and 5 W m−2, respectively. The differences in land surface albedo, snow cover fraction, snow depth, and surface temperature between TOP and PP exceed 0.1, 0.1, 10 cm, and 1 K, respectively. The magnitude of the sub-grid topographic effects is dependent on seasons and elevations and is also sensitive to the spatial scales. Although the sub-grid topographic effects on solar radiation are larger with more spatial details at finer spatial scales, they cannot be simply neglected at coarse spatial scales. When compared to MODIS data, incorporating the sub-grid topographic effects overall reduces the biases of ELM in simulating surface energy balance, snow cover, and surface temperature, especially in the high-elevation and snow-covered regions over the TP. The inclusion of sub-grid topographic effects on solar radiation parameterization in ELM will contribute to advancing our understanding of the role of the surface topography on terrestrial processes over complex terrain.

Recent Arctic sea ice retreat has been quicker than the projection in most general circulation model (GCM) simulations. Natural factors may have amplified this, but reliable attribution and projection requires accurate representation of relevant physical processes. In the meeting, we will present results indicating robust links between CloudSat-CALIPSO falling ice and Arctic sea ice melting from observations and global climate modelings. Most current GCMs don’t fully represent falling ice radiative effects (FIREs). We find that a small set of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project, phase 5 (CMIP5) models that include FIREs tend to show a faster Arctic sea ice retreat. We investigate this using controlled simulation with the CESM1-CAM5 model both in present-day and 1%CO2 scenarios. With FIREs, CESM1-CAM5 simulates more realistic present-day annual and seasonal variations of radiation and skin temperatures and Arctic sea ice coverage and thickness. Over 60—90 °N oceans, simulated radiative flux trends are similar but the current-day state differs substantially due to FIREs. Falling ice reduces downward shortwave and increase downward longwave, resulting in an improved agreement with the satellite-based CERES-EBAF surface dataset. Under 1pctCO2 simulations, including FIREs results in the first occurrence of an “ice free” Arctic (extent < 1×106 km2) in year 64, compared with year 91 otherwise. We propose that the equivalent greenhouse effects from falling ice results in fewer safe spaces in which sea ice can thicken during winter, resulting in a thinner pack whose retreat is more easily triggered by global warming. However, this explanation does not apply across the CMIP5 ensemble members. Our results therefore only apply to one model but we have shown that this can have substantial implications for Arctic sea ice projection. Given that falling ice interaction with radiation in reality, we propose that including FIREs in models is a high priority.

The Taiwan Earth System Model (TaiESM) version 1 is developed based on Community Earth System Model version 1.2.2 of National Center for Atmospheric Research. Several innovated physical and chemical parameterizations, including trigger functions for deep convection, cloud macrophysics, aerosol, and three-dimensional radiation–topography interaction, as well as a one-dimensional mixed-layer model optional for the atmosphere component, are incorporated. The precipitation variability, such as diurnal cycle and propagation of convection systems, is improved in TaiESM. TaiESM demonstrates good model stability in the 500-year preindustrial simulation in terms of the net flux at the top of the model, surface temperatures, and sea ice concentration. In the historical simulation, although the warming before 1935 is weak, TaiESM well captures the increasing trend of temperature after 1950. The current climatology of TaiESM during 1979–2005 is evaluated by observational and reanalysis datasets. Cloud amounts are too large in TaiESM, but their cloud forcing is only slightly weaker than observational data. The mean bias of the sea surface temperature is almost zero, whereas the surface air temperatures over land and sea ice regions exhibit cold biases. The overall performance of TaiESM is above average among models in Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5, particularly that the bias of precipitation is smallest. However, several common discrepancies shared by most models still exist, such as the double Intertropical Convergence Zone bias in precipitation and warm bias over the Southern Ocean.
