1. Robust inference for the unification of confidence intervals in meta-analysis

Abstract

Traditional meta-analysis assumes that the effect sizes estimated in individual studies follow a Gaussian distribution. However, this distributional assumption is not always satisfied in practice, leading to potentially biased results. In the situation when the number of studies, denoted as K, is large, the cumulative Gaussian approximation errors from each study could make the final estimation unreliable. In the situation when K is small, it is not realistic to assume the random-effect follows Gaussian distribution. In this paper, we present a novel empirical likelihood method for combining confidence intervals under the meta-analysis framework. This method is free of the Gaussian assumption in effect size estimates from individual studies and from the random-effects. We establish the large-sample properties of the non-parametric estimator, and introduce a criterion governing the relationship between the number of studies, K, and the sample size of each study, n_i. Our methodology supersedes conventional meta-analysis techniques in both theoretical robustness and computational efficiency. We assess the performance of our proposed methods using simulation studies, and apply our proposed methods to two examples.

2. Bivariate copula regression models for semi-competing risks

Abstract

Time-to-event semi-competing risk endpoints may be correlated when both events are occurring on the same individual. These events and the association between them may also be influenced by individual characteristics. In this paper, we propose copula survival models to estimate hazard ratios of covariates on the non-terminal and terminal events, along with the effects of covariates on the association between the two events. We use the Normal, Clayton, Frank and Gumbel copulas to provide a variety of association structures between the non-terminal and terminal events. We apply the proposed methods to model semi-competing risks of graft failure and death for kidney transplant patients. We find that copula survival models perform better than the Cox proportional hazards model when estimating the non-terminal event hazard ratio of covariates. We also find that the inclusion of covariates in the association parameter of the copula models improves the estimation of the hazard ratios.

8. Study on the Anti-Icing Property of a New Type Wear-Resistant Superhydrophobic Coating on Fan Blades

Abstract

Wind turbine blades are often affected by ice coating during service. Due to its special wetness, superhydrophobic materials have great application potential in the field of anti-icing. Based on this, using the wind turbine blades as the base, and a fluorine-free suspension formulated with epoxy resin(EP), polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) and modified SiO2 was spin-coated on the surface of wind turbine blades, and a wear-resistant and anti-icing superhydrophobic specimen was produced after curing. In addition, the microstructure, composition and hydrophobicity of superhydrophobic coatings were studied by scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy and contact angle measurement instruments, respectively. Results showed that the contact angle of the superhydrophobic coating was 166.65°, and the rolling angle was 2.5°. Compared to uncoated fan blades, the coating prolonged the icing time by about 40% at-10 ℃ and-15 ℃, and the bonding strength of the ice layer after coating icing was significantly lower than that of fan blades. The contact angle of the coating after 10 meters of wear on the 800 mesh sandpaper was 150.5 °. Overall, the prepared wear-resistant superhydrophobic coating possessed superhydrophobic effect and good anti-icing performance.

Abstract

In order to explore the effect of rare earth La on the high-temperature oxidation behavior of S44535 ferritic stainless steel， accelerated oxidation was used to study the high-temperature oxidation of S44535 steel added with 0.26% La in static air at 800°C，900 ℃and 1 000 ℃. In this paper， the oxidation kinetic curves of S44535 ferritic stainless steel at three temperatures were compared by constant temperature oxidation method， and the oxide layer of steel was characterized by scanning electron microscopy （SEM）， energy spectroscopy analyzer （EDS） and X-ray diffraction （XRD）， and the effect of rare earth La on the high-temperature oxidation resistance of ferritic stainless steel was explored. The results showed that the oxidation products were mainly Cr2O3 and MnCr2O4， and with the increase of temperature， the surface oxide film thickened and became denser， and its outer layer was rich in Mn， and the inner layer was rich in Cr， indicating that rare earths changed the growth direction of the oxide film， and showed excellent high temperature oxidation resistance performance.

Abstract

Some studies have shown that the incidence of type 2 diabetes increases after a diagnosis of COVID-19, although the evidence is not conclusive. However, the effects of the COVID-19 vaccine on this association, or the effect on other diabetes subtypes, are not clear. We aimed to investigate the association between COVID-19 and incidence of type 2, type 1, gestational and non-specific diabetes, and the effect of COVID- 19 vaccination, up to 52 weeks after diagnosis.

Abstract

Nosocomial pathogens such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE) are the cause of significant morbidity and mortality among hospital patients. It is important to be able to assess the efficacy of control measures using data on patient outcomes. In this paper, we describe methods for analysing such data using patient-level stochastic models which seek to describe the underlying unobserved process of transmission. The methods are applied to detailed longitudinal patient-level data on vancomycin-resistant Enterococci from a study in a US hospital with eight intensive care units (ICUs). The data comprise admission and discharge dates, dates and results of screening tests, and dates during which precautionary measures were in place for each patient during the study period. Results include estimates of the efficacy of the control measures, the proportion of unobserved patients colonized with vancomycin-resistant Enterococci, and the proportion of patients colonized on admission.
