1. How States and Districts Support Evidence Use in School Improvement. Study Snapshot. NCEE 2020-004

Abstract

"The Every Student Succeeds Act" encourages educators to use school improvement strategies backed by rigorous research. This snapshot, based on national surveys administered in 2018, describes what guidance states provided on improvement strategies and how districts selected such strategies in lowest-performing schools. Most states pointed districts and schools to evidence on improvement strategies, but few required schools to choose from a list of approved strategies. In turn, most districts reported that evidence of effectiveness was "very important" when choosing improvement strategies, but the evidence districts relied on probably varies in quality. [The data presented in this snapshot come from state and district surveys administered in 2017-18 (between April and September 2018) as part of the Study of "Implementation of Title I and Title II-A Program Initiatives: Results from 2013-14. 2. Asymdystopia: The Threat of Small Biases in Evaluations of Education Interventions That Need to Be Powered to Detect Small Impacts

Abstract

Evaluators of education interventions increasingly need to design studies to detect impacts much smaller than the 0.20 standard deviations that Cohen (1988) characterized as "small." For example, an evaluation of Response to Intervention from the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) detected impacts ranging from 0.13 to 0.17 standard deviations (Balu et al. 2015), and IES' evaluation of the Teacher Incentive Fund detected impacts of just 0.03 standard deviations (Chiang et al. 2015). The drive to detect smaller impacts is in response to strong arguments that in many contexts, impacts once deemed "small" can still be meaningful (Kane 2015). Though based on a compelling rationale, the drive to detect smaller impacts may create a new challenge for researchers: the need to guard against relatively smaller biases. When studies were designed to detect impacts of 0.20 standard deviations or larger, it may have been reasonable for researchers to regard small biases as ignorable. For example, a bias of 0.03 standard deviations might have been ignorable in a study that could only detect an impact of 0.20 standard deviations. But in a study designed to detect much smaller impacts, such as Chiang et al. (2015) in which the impact estimate was 0.03 standard deviations, a bias of 0.03 standard deviations is no longer small--it is enormous. The authors define asymdystopia as a context in which a larger sample size is not necessarily better and could even be worse from the perspective of controlling the Type 1 error rate. The authors examine the potential for asymdystopia as studies are powered to detect smaller impacts, where even small biases may lead to false inferences about the existence or magnitude of an impact. The authors focus on the potential for bias from attrition in the case of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and bias from regression misspecification in the case of regression discontinuity designs (RDDs). While the methodological details are distinct, in both cases they are unpacking a source of bias that may become increasingly problematic when studies are designed to detect smaller impacts. The two main research questions are: (1) How problematic is attrition bias in RCTs as studies are powered to detect smaller impacts? and (2) How problematic is functional form misspecification bias in RDDs as studies are powered to detect smaller impacts? Overall, the findings suggest that biases that might have once been reasonably ignorable can pose a real threat in evaluations that are powered to detect small impacts. This paper identifies and quantifies some of these biases, and shows that they are important to consider when designing evaluations and when analyzing and interpreting evaluation findings. Abstract

Background/Aims: The current standard of care to perform an anterior chamber paracentesis involves the use of a multipurpose market needle and syringe. The use of standard needles for this purpose may result in injury to the patient due to increased force with insertion and increased globe displacement during the procedure. This research investigates the current market needle characteristics and the impact of each needle characteristic on force. Methods: Several comparative trials were conducted to evaluate the needles. Needle characteristics of interest were gauge, primary bevel angle, number of bevels in the lancet, and needle hub geometry. Measurements of corneal insertion forces were made using a synthetic thermoplastic polyurethane medium, and bovine and porcine models. Needle safety was investigated with corneal abrasion experiments. Results: Reduced insertion force was observed with lower lancet primary angle. There was no difference based on the number of bevels in the lancet. Rounded hub geometry had minimal distribution to the corneal epithelium. Conclusions: Needle characteristics impact the force needed for needle insertion into the tissue. Since higher force can lead to increased risk and less efficiency during the procedure, reducing this force may improve the outcomes of the procedure. Needle entry can be reduced by designing an improved needle that includes a lower gauge and reduced primary angle of the lancet. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

8. Sticks, Stones, Words, and Broken Bones: New Field and Lab Evidence on Stereotype Threat

Abstract

Stereotype threat is frequently purported to be an important determinant of gender gaps in math. Unlike prior studies, which mostly occur in lab settings, I use data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)--a large, representative assessment of U.S. children--where through a design quirk, students are randomly assigned test blocks, some of which include gender prime questions while others do not. I exploit this natural field experiment by comparing the gender gap in math scores of students receiving primes to those who do not. I find that girls actually perform better relative to boys for some primes (stereotype reactance) and no worse for others. These findings suggest that stereotype priming effects are relevant outside of lab settings, and that consistent with findings from a companion lab experiment and other lab studies from the stereotype literature, the effects appear to depend on the exact phrasing of the primes. 9. Transmitting Musical Images: Using Music to Teach Public Speaking

Abstract

Oral communication courses traditionally help students identify the proper arrangement of words to convey particular images. Although instructors emphasize the importance of speaking powerfully, they often struggle to find effective ways to teach their students "how" to deliver a message that resonates with the audience. Given the clear importance of delivery, the authors believe that instructors must find ways to overcome this pedagogical limitation. One technique that instructors can use to teach difficult concepts is to present an analogy. Music, like powerful speech, evokes visceral responses from the audience. However, music is a universal language that transmits images more easily. By exploring the intersection between music and powerful speech, students will learn how they can use their voice as a musical instrument. This paper describes an activity that will not only help students improve their oral communication skills but will also motivate students to think about the song that is playing beneath their words. Abstract

To what extent would the use of an enactive approach in the classroom allow awareness of alterity with the learners and the teacher ? Would it be immediate ? What would be the cognitive consequences for each player ? This research proposes to situate the teaching-learning of FFL/FSL – intended for migrants – within the paradigm of enaction (developed by Varela). Through deep reflection on alterity, the author seeks to understand if the use of such an approach plays a role in cognition. The study presented here also attempts to show the development of extralinguistic skills – which can be assimilated by both the learners and the teacher – in addition to the acquisition of French thanks to the invention and implementation of language activities.; Dans quelle mesure le recours à une approche dite énactive en classe permettrait une conscientisation de l’altérité chez les apprenants, chez le professeur ? Abstract

Carbon felts based on rayon and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) precursors constitute the most widespread porous electrode material for vanadium redox-flow batteries. Since the raw materials exhibit rather poor wettability, it has become common practice to apply oxidative surface treatments prior to use in flow batteries. This study investigates the electrode-specific effects of raw and thermally oxidized (PAN and rayon-based) carbon felts on their electrochemical behavior at the negative and the positive electrode in all vanadium redox-flow batteries. By means of steady-state single cell measurements, it is verified that oxidative surface treatment has opposite effects on negative and positive redox couples and that the beneficial influence on the vanadium redox-flow battery performance is mainly brought about by substantially improved charge-transfer kinetics at the negative electrode. Similarly, the type of carbon precursor and the degree of graphitic character have a particular impact on the electrode behavior.

Abstract

Exclusive neutral-pion electroproduction ($ep\to e^\prime p^\prime \pi^0$) was measured at Jefferson Lab with a 5.75-GeV electron beam and the CLAS detector. Differential cross sections $d^4\sigma/dtdQ^2dx_Bd\phi_\pi$ and structure functions $\sigma_T+\epsilon\sigma_L, \sigma_{TT}$ and $\sigma_{LT}$ as functions of $t$ were obtained over a wide range of $Q^2$ and $x_B$. The data are compared with Regge and handbag theoretical calculations. Analyses in both frameworks find that a large dominance of transverse processes is necessary to explain the experimental results. For the Regge analysis it is found that the inclusion of vector meson rescattering processes is necessary to bring the magnitude of the calculated and measured structure functions into rough agreement. In the handbag framework, there are two independent calculations, both of which appear to roughly explain the magnitude of the structure functions in terms of transversity generalized parton distributions.

Abstract

The contributions postdoctoral scholars make to scientific production are well-documented. Increasingly in the USA, serving as a postdoctoral scholar is an expected component of a scientist's career. A notable feature of the job market for postdoctoral scholars is that it is ad hoc. Social network theory and supporting empirical evidence suggest that personal connections in job searches are beneficial for turnover, satisfaction, and productivity outcomes. This is particularly relevant given the large fraction of foreign postdoctoral scholars, who may naturally be more constrained in their search networks than their US-based counterparts. Using the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society's data on postdoctoral scholars in the USA, we explore the relationship between job search methods and these outcomes, focusing on the differences in outcomes between domestic and foreign postdoctoral scholars. We find suggestive evidence of weaker networks for foreign postdoctoral scholars, who more often resort to 'impersonal' searches. The resulting difference in job match quality is related to differences in turnover, satisfaction, and productivity, which suggests that public policies to facilitate the job search of postdoctoral scholars (foreign ones especially) may yield substantial benefits.
