Rapid signal fluctuations due to blockage effects cause excessive handovers (HOs) and degrade mobility performance. By reconfiguring line-of-sight (LoS) Links through passive reflections, intelligent reflective surface (IRS) has the potential to address this issue. Due to the lack of introducing blocking effects, existing HO analyses cannot capture excessive HOs or exploit enhancements via IRSs. This paper proposes an LoS state transition model enabling analysis of mobility enhancement achieved by IRS-reconfigured LoS links, where LoS link blocking and reconfiguration utilizing IRS during user movement are explicitly modeled as stochastic processes. Specifically, the condition for blocking LoS links is characterized as a set of possible blockage locations, the distribution of available IRSs is thinned by the criteria for reconfiguring LoS links. In addition, BSs potentially handed over are categorized by probabilities of LoS states to enable HO decision analysis. By projecting distinct gains of LoS states onto a uniform equivalent distance criterion, mobility enhanced by IRS is quantified through the compact expression of HO probability. Results show the probability of dropping into non-LoS decreases by 70% when deploying IRSs with the density of 93/km$^2$, and HOs decrease by 67% under the optimal IRS distributed deployment parameter., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, submitted to IEEE

Owning to the reflection gain and double path loss featured by intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) channels, handover (HO) locations become irregular and the signal strength fluctuates sharply with variations in IRS connections during HO, the risk of HO failures (HOFs) is exacerbated and thus HO parameters require reconfiguration. However, existing HO models only assume monotonic negative exponential path loss and cannot obtain sound HO parameters. This paper proposes a discrete-time model to explicitly track the HO process with variations in IRS connections, where IRS connections and HO process are discretized as finite states by measurement intervals, and transitions between states are modeled as stochastic processes. Specifically, to capture signal fluctuations during HO, IRS connection state-dependent distributions of the user-IRS distance are modified by the correlation between measurement intervals. In addition, states of the HO process are formed with Time-to-Trigger and HO margin whose transition probabilities are integrated concerning all IRS connection states. Trigger location distributions and probabilities of HO, HOF, and ping-pong (PP) are obtained by tracing user HO states. Results show IRSs mitigate PPs by 48% but exacerbate HOFs by 90% under regular parameters. Short-fiber-reinforced composites (SFRC) are high-performance engineering materials for lightweight structural applications in the automotive and electronics industries. Typically, SFRC structures are manufactured by injection molding, which induces heterogeneous microstructures, and the resulting nonlinear anisotropic behaviors are challenging to predict by conventional micromechanical analyses. In this work, we present a machine learning-based multiscale method by integrating injection molding-induced microstructures, material homogenization, and Deep Material Network (DMN) in the finite element simulation software LS-DYNA for structural analysis of SFRC. DMN is a physics-embedded machine learning model that learns the microscale material morphologies hidden in representative volume elements of composites through offline training. By coupling DMN with finite elements, we have developed a highly accurate and efficient data-driven approach, which predicts nonlinear behaviors of composite materials and structures at a computational speed orders-of-magnitude faster than the high-fidelity direct numerical simulation. To model industrial-scale SFRC products, transfer learning is utilized to generate a unified DMN database, which effectively captures the effects of injection molding-induced fiber orientations and volume fractions on the overall composite properties. In modern engineering designs, advanced materials (e.g., fiber/particle-reinforced polymers, metallic alloys, laminar composites, etc.) are widely used, where microscale heterogeneities such as grains, inclusions, voids, micro-cracks, and interfaces significantly affect the macroscopic constitutive behaviors. Obviously, an accurate description of the multiscale material behaviors is of great importance to the success of material design and structural analysis. The Representative Volume Element (RVE) analysis method provides a rigorous means to obtain homogenized macroscopic material properties at the upper length scale from the properties of the material constituents and structures at a lower length scale. Recently, we have developed an RVE module (keyword: *RVE_ANALYSIS_FEM) in the multiphysics simulation software LS-DYNA to enable high-fidelity virtual testing of numerically re-constructed material samples at user-specified characteristic length scales. In the paper, we present an integrated data-driven modeling framework based on process modeling, material homogenization, mechanistic machine learning, and concurrent multiscale simulation. We are interested in the injection-molded short fiber reinforced composites, which have been identified as key material systems in automotive, aerospace, and electronics industries. The molding process induces spatially varying microstructures across various length scales, while the resulting strongly anisotropic and nonlinear material properties are still challenging to be captured by conventional modeling approaches. To prepare the linear elastic training data for our machine learning tasks, Representative Volume Elements (RVE) with different fiber orientations and volume fractions are generated through stochastic reconstruction. More importantly, we utilize the recently proposed Deep Material Network (DMN) to learn the hidden microscale morphologies from data. With essential physics embedded in its building blocks, this data-driven material model can be extrapolated to predict nonlinear material behaviors efficiently and accurately. Through the transfer learning of DMN, we create a unified process-guided material database that covers a full range of geometric descriptors for short fiber reinforced composites. Finally, this unified DMN database is implemented and coupled with macroscale finite element model to enable concurrent multiscale simulations. Single-wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) nanofibrils were assembled onto conductive atomic force microscopy (AFM) probes with the help of dielectrophoresis (DEP). This process involved the application of a 10 V, 2 MHz, AC bias between a metal-coated AFM probe and a dilute suspension of SWNTs. This exerted a positive dielectrophoretic force onto the nanotubes that caused them to align while precipitating out onto the probe. The gradual removal of the AFM probe away from the SWNT suspension consolidated these nanotubes into nanofibrils with a high degree of alignment as demonstrated with polarization Raman experiments. By varying the pulling speed, immersion time, and concentration of the SWNT suspension, one can tailor the diameter and thus the stiffness of these probes. Precise length trimming of these nanofibrils was also performed by their gradual immersion and dissolution into a liquid that strongly interacted with nanotubes, (i.e., sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) solution). Vacuum annealing these nanoprobes at temperature up to 450 degree C further increased their stiffness and rendered them insoluble to SDS and all other aqueous media. Regrowth of a new SWNT nanofibril from the side or at the end of a previously grown SWNT nanofibril was also demonstrated by a repeated dielectrophoretic assembly at the desired immersion depth. These SWNT nanofibril-equipped AFM probes are electrically conductive and mechanically robust for use as high-aspect-ratio electrochemical nanoprobes.

Nanocomposite matrices of silver/poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) were prepared in ultrahigh vacuum through vapor-phase co-deposition. Change in microstructure, chemical nature and electronic properties with increasing filler (Ag) content were investigated using in-situ XPS and UPS, and ambient AFM. At least two chemical binding states occur between Ag nanoparticles and sulfur in P3HT at the immediate contact layer but no evidence of interaction between Ag and carbon (in P3HT) was found. AFM images reveal a change in Ag nanoparticles size with concentration which modifies the microstructure and the average roughness of the surface. Under co-deposition, P3HT largely retains its conjugated structures, which is evidenced by the similar XPS and UPS spectra to those of P3HT films deposited on other substrates. We demonstrate here that the magnitude of the barrier height for hole injection and the position of the highest occupied band edge (HOB) with respect to the Fermi level of Ag can be controlled and changed by adjusting the metal (Ag) content in the composite. Furthermore, UPS reveals distinct features related to the C 2p (Sigma states) in the 5-12 eV regions, indicating the presence of ordered P3HT which is different from solution processed films., Comment: Scudier and Wei provided equal contribution

With the aid of low-energy (500 eV) electron-beam direct writing, patterns of perpendicularly-aligned Single-wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) forests were realized on Nafion modified substrates via Fe3+ assisted self-assembly. Infrared spectroscopy (IR), atomic force microscopy (AFM) profilometry and contact angle measurements indicated that low-energy electron-beam cleaved the hydrophilic side chains (-SO3H and C-O-C) of Nafion to low molecular byproducts that sublimed in the ultra-high vacuum (UHV) environment exposing the hydrophobic Nafion backbone. Auger mapping and AFM microscopy affirmed that the exposed hydrophobic domains absorbed considerably less Fe3+ ions upon exposure to pH 2.2 aqueous FeCl3 solution, which yield considerably less FeO(OH)/FeOCl precipitates (FeO(OH) in majority) upon washing with lightly basic DMF solution containing trace amounts of adsorbed moisture. Such differential deposition of FeO(OH)/FeOCl precipitates provided the basis for the patterned site-specific self-assembly of SWNT forests as demonstrated by AFM and resonance Raman spectroscopy.

Single-wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) nanofibrils were assembled onto a variety of conductive scanning probes including atomic force microscope (AFM) tips and scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) needles using positive dielectrophoresis (DEP). The magnitude of the applied electric field was varied in the range of 1-20 V to investigate its effect on the dimensions of the assembled SWNT nanofibrils. Both length and diameter grew asymptotically as voltage increased from 5 to 18 V. Below 4 V, stable attachment of SWNT nanofibrils could not be achieved due to the relatively weak DEP force versus Brownian motion. At voltages of 20 V and higher, low quality nanofibrils resulted from incorporating large amounts of impurities. For intermediate voltages, optimal nanofibrils were achieved, though pivotal to this assembly is the wetting behaviour upon tip immersion in the SWNT suspension drop. This process was monitored in situ to correlate wetting angle and probe geometry (cone angles and tip height), revealing that probes with narrow cone angles and long shanks are optimal. It is proposed that this results from less wetting of the probe apex, and therefore reduces capillary forces and especially force transients during the nanofibril drawing process. Relatively rigid probes (force constant >= 2 N/m) exhibited no perceivable cantilever bending upon wetting and de-wetting, resulting in the most stable process control.

Europium-doped lutetium-oxide (Eu:Lu2O3) nanoparticles were synthesized using a combustion technique and a co-precipitation technique, and their properties were compared. Surface-modification utilizing small silane molecules and long chain polymers were explored to de-agglomerate and disperse the particles. Structural, morphological and optical properties were characterized with x-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and laser spectroscopy respectively to evaluate these materials. The luminescent behaviors were compared between the pristine and modified Eu:Lu2O3 nanoparticles to study the influence of surface ligands on emission properties. Subsequently, the Eu:Lu2O3 nanoparticles were placed on top of a thin film consisting of silver nanoparticles and combined with silver nanoparticles and dispersed in a polymer matrix. The presence of the silver nanoparticles led to a reduction of the fluorescence lifetime of 12-14%.

Silver nanoparticles embedded in a dielectric matrix are investigated for their potential as broadband-absorbing optical sensor materials. This contribution focuses on the electrical properties of silver nanoparticles at various morphological stages. The electrical current through thin films, consisting of silver nanoparticles, was characterized as a function of film thickness. Three distinct conductivity zones were observed. Two relatively flat zones ("dielectric" for very thin films and "metallic" for films thicker than 300 - 400 {\AA}) are separated by a sharp transition zone where percolation dominates. The dielectric zone is characterized by isolated particle islands with the electrical conduction dominated by a thermally activated tunneling process. The transition zone is dominated by interconnected silver nanoclusters - a small increase of the film thickness results in a large increase of the electrical conductivity. The metallic conductivity zone dominates for thicknesses above 300 - 400 {\AA}.

Poly (3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) was thermally evaporated and deposited in vacuum. Infrared spectroscopy was used to confirm that the thin films were indeed P3HT, and showed that in-situ thermal evaporation provides a viable route for contaminant-free surface/interface analysis of P3HT in an ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) environment. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) as well as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) experiments were carried out to examine the frontier orbitals and core energy levels of P3HT thin films vapor deposited in UHV on clean polycrystalline silver (Ag) surfaces. UPS spectra enable the determination of the vacuum shift at the polymer/metal interface, the valence band maximum (VBM), and the energy of the \Pi-band of the overlayer film. The P3HT vacuum level decreased in contrast to that of the underlying Ag as the film thickness increased. XPS and UPS data confirmed the chemical integrity (stoichiometry) of the polymer at high coverage, as well as the shift of the C 1s and S 2p binding energy peaks and the secondary-electron edge with increasing film thickness, indicating that band bending is present at the P3HT/Ag interface and that the measured onset of the valence band is about 0.8 +- 0.05 eV relative to the Fermi level.

Thin-film nanocomposites, consisting of silver nanoparticles embedded in a dielectric Teflon\textregistered AF matrix, were synthesized using vapor phase co-deposition. The electrical conductivity of these composites was measured in-situ as a function of film thickness at various metal concentrations. At low metal concentrations (<30%), dielectric behavior and very little change with film thickness was observed. At moderate to high silver loadings (30-80%) a large increase in electrical conductivity was observed as the films grew thicker. As the thickness increased further, the conductivity flattened out. At very high silver content (>90%), fragmented fractal nanoclusters were able to further interconnect to achieve the percolation process and eventually evolve into a metallic continuum with dielectric polymer inclusions.

Based on electron-beam direct writing on the SiOx/Si substrates, favorable absorption sites for ferric cations (Fe3+ ions) were created on the surface oxide layer. This allowed Fe3+-assisted self-assembled arrays of single-wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) probes to be produced. Auger investigation indicated that the incident energetic electrons depleted oxygen, creating more dangling bonds around Si atoms at the surface of the SiOx layer. This resulted in a distinct difference in the friction forces from unexposed regions as measured by lateral force microscopy (LFM). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) affirmed that the irradiated domains absorbed considerably more Fe3+ ions upon immersion into pH 2.2 aqueous FeCl3 solution. This rendered a greater yield of FeO(OH)/FeOCl precipitates, primarily FeO(OH), upon subsequent washing with lightly basic dimethylformamide (DMF) solution. Such selective metalfunctionalization established the basis for the subsequent patterned forest-assembly of SWNTs as demonstrated by resonance Raman spectroscopy.
