Transformation field method (TFM) is developed to estimate the anisotropic dielectric properties of crystal composites having arbitrary shapes and dielectric properties of crystal inclusions, whose principal dielectric axis are different from those of anisotropic crystal matrix. The complicated boundary-value problem caused by inclusion shapes is circumvented by introducing a transformation electric field into the crystal composites regions, and the effective anisotropic dielectric responses are formulated in terms of the transformation field. Furthermore, the numerical results show that the effective anisotropic dielectric responses of crystal composites periodically vary as a function of the rotating angle between the principal dielectric axes of inclusion and matrix crystal materials. It is found that at larger inclusion volume fraction the inclusion shapes induce profound effect on the effective anisotropic dielectric responses.

A complete set of one-month Acoustic Doppler Profiler (ADP) current data at a station in the southern Yellow Sea (SYS) is analyzed using the rotary spectrum method. The results revealed different rotary properties between barotropic and baroclinic tidal currents. The barotropic and baroclinic tidal currents rotate elliptically counter-clockwise and clockwise, respectively. Meanwhile, baroclinic bottom tidal currents are almost along-isobath. The baroclinic cross-isobath velocities attenuate quickly at the bottom, implying important effects of bottom topography on the cross-isobath motions.

Based on the effective medium approximation theory of composites, the empirical model proposed by Pandey and Kakar is remedied to investigate the microwave emissivity of sea surface under wave breaking driven by strong wind. In the improved model, the effects of seawater bubbles, droplets and difference in temperature of air and sea interface (DTAS) on the emissivity of sea surface covered by whitecaps are discussed. The model results indicate that the effective emissivity of sea surface increases with DTAS increasing, and the impacts of bubble structures and thickness of whitecaps layer on the emissivity are included in the model by introducing the effective dielectric constant of whitecaps layer. Moreover, a good agreement is obtained by comparing the model results with the Rose's experimental data.

Under alternating current electric field, effective response of granular nonlinear composites with spherical coated inclusions is investigated in the dilute limit by using the perturbation approach. For an external sinusoidal applied field with finite frequency ω, the local fields and potentials of composites in general consist of components at all harmonics for cubic nonlinear constitutive relationships. We derive the local potentials of spherical coated composites at harmonics. Moreover, we give the formulae of the nonlinear effective AC susceptibility at the third harmonic frequency.

A general effective response is proposed for nonlinear composite media, which obey a current field relation of the form J = sigmaE + chi\E\(2) E when an external alternating current (AC) electrical field is applied. For a sinusoidal applied field with finite frequency omega, the effective constitutive relation between the current density and electric field can be defined as, = sigma(e) + chi(e) + (. . .), where sigma(e) and chi(e) are the general effective linear and nonlinear conductive responses, respectively. The angled brackets denotes the ensemble average. As two examples, we have investigated the cylindrical and spherical inclusions embedded in a host and also derived the formulae of the general effective linear and nonlinear conductive responses in dilute limit. For higher volume fraction of inclusions, we have proposed a nonlinear effective medium approximation (EMA) method to estimate the general effective response of nonlinear composites in external AC field. A perturbative approach is used to study the AC response of nonlinear composite media, which obey a current-field relation of the form with components having nonlinear response at finite frequencies. For a sinusoidal applied field, we extend the local potential in terms of sinusoidal components at fundamental frequency and high-order harmonic frequencies to treat the nonlinear composites. For nonlinear composite media with a low concentrations of spherical inclusions, we give the formulae of the nonlinear effective AC susceptibility at the third harmonic frequency.

A novel method is proposed to obtain the power spectra of hidden variables in a chaotic time series. By embedding the data in phase space, and recording the conditional probability density of points that the trajectory encounters as it evolves in the reconstructed phase space, it is possible to recover the power spectra of hidden variables in chaotic time series through a spectral analysis over the conditional probability density time series. The method is robust in the application to Lorenz system, 4-dimension Rossler system and rigid body motion by linear feedback system (LFRBM). Applying the method to the time series of sea surface temperature (SST) of the South China Sea, we obtained the power spectra of the wind speed (WS) from SST data. Furthermore, the results showed that there exists an important nonlinear interaction between the SST and the WS.

The homotopy continuation method is used to solve the electrostatic boundary-value problems of strongly nonlinear composite media, which obey a current-field relation of J = σE + χ|E|2E. With the mode expansion, the approximate analytical solutions of electric potential in host and inclusion regions are obtained by solving a set of nonlinear ordinary different equations, which are derived from the original equations with homotopy method. As an example in dimension two, we apply the method to deal with a nonlinear cylindrical inclusion embedded in a host. Comparing the approximate analytical solution of the potential obtained by homotopy method with that of numerical method, we can obverse that the homotopy method is valid for solving boundary-value problems of weakly and strongly nonlinear media.

We investigate the effective dielectric responses of graded spherical composites under an external uniform electric field by taking the dielectric function of spherical inclusion, epsilon(i) = cr(k) e(beta r), where r is the inner distance of a point inside the particle from the centre of the spherical particle in the coordination. In the dilute limit, our exact result is used to test the validity of differential effective dipole approximation (DEDA) for estimating the effective response of graded spherical composites and it is shown that the DEDA is in excellent agreement with the exact result.

Under a simple shearing flow, the effective viscosity of solid suspensions can be reduced by controlling the inclusion particle size or the number of inclusion particles in a unit volume. Based on the Stokes equation, the transformation field method is used to model the reduction behaviour of effective viscosity of solid suspensions theoretically by enlarging the particle size at a given high concentration of particles. With a lot of samples of random cubic particles in a unit cell, our statistical results show that at the same higher concentration, the effective viscosity of solid suspensions can be reduced by increasing the particle size or reducing the number of inclusion particles in a unit volume. This work discloses the viscosity reduction mechanism of increasing particle size, which is observed experimentally.

This paper investigates analytically the electric field distribution of graded spherical core-shell metamaterials, whose permittivity is given by the graded Drude model. Under the illumination of a uniform incident optical field, the obtained results show that the electrical field distribution in the shell region is controllable and the electric field peak's position inside the spherical shell can be confined in a desired position by varying the frequency of the optical field as well as the parameters of the graded dielectric profiles. It has also offered an intuitive explanation for controlling the local electric field by graded metamaterials.

In this paper, the whitecap coverage is retrieved from the ERS-1 data and the KHCC03 scattering model which takes into account the effect of wave breaking, and a new whitecap coverage formula is obtained based on the retrieval results. The results calculated from this new formula of whitecap coverage have better agreement with the measured whitecap coverage than those obtained by some famous previous formula in the range of wind speed at 10 m height from 7 m/s to 16 m/s. This shows that it is feasible to retrieve whitecap coverage from scatterometer data and the scattering model including the effect of wave breaking. Moreover, this approach is different from those methods usually used in passive remote sensing.

Sea surface salinity is a key physical parameter in ocean science. It is important in the ocean remote sensing to retrieve sea surface salinity by the microwave probe technology. Based on the in situ measurement data and remote sensing data of the Yellow Sea, we have built a new empirical model in this paper, which can be used to retrieve sea surface salinity of the Yellow Sea by means of the brightness temperature of the sea water at L-band. In this model, the influence of the roughness of the sea surface is considered, and the retrieved result is in good agreement with the in situ measurement data, where the mean absolute error of the retrieved sea surface salinity is about 0.288 psu. This result shows that our model has greater retrieval precision compared with similar models.
