Abstract: This project aimed at the implementation of an information model and a corresponding HL7 FHIR® data model for the transmission of tumor data between cancer registries and the Institute for Quality Assurance and Transparency in Healthcare (IQTIG). The project is based on a concept study from IQTIG focusing on a future quality assurance measure of the treatment of patients with localized prostate cancer. In this study quality aspects have been developed, which means that different topics of interest have been adressed, but no specific quality indicators were developed. Based on the quality aspects possible data fields have been extracted which might be necessary for future quality indicators. Upon those information entities an information model was designed. Based on the information model a data model in HL7 FHIR® has been developed and validated against a validation engine provided by the online platform Simplifier. This work shows the difference between an information model and a data model. The information model is crucial for establishing a common understanding between all stakeholders supporting interoperability. The data model is important for the underlying technology, but does not necessarily explain the overall process. Hence, information and data model complement each other. The theroretical work presented in this paper will be the basis for further projects. A following project will use the data model to transfer tumor data between the clinical cancer registry of Lower Saxony and the IQTIG., Die gesetzlichen Vorgaben in § 65c SGB V ermöglichen eine Zusammenarbeit zwischen den klinischen Krebsregistern und dem Gemeinsamen Bundesausschuss (G-BA) zur Durchführung von Qualitätssicherungsmaßnahmen zur Verbesserung der onkologischen Versorgung. Hierfür ist eine Datenübermittlung zwischen den Krebsregistern und dem wissenschaftlich unabhängigen Institut des G-BA gemäß § 137a SGB V notwendig. In dieser Arbeit wird ein Proof of Concept eines Informations- und Datenmodells zur Übermittlung von Tumordaten zu Patienten mit lokal begrenztem Prostatakarzinom entwickelt. Das Ziel dieser Arbeit ist die Entwicklung und Etablierung einer interoperablen und zukunftsfähigen Kommunikationsschnittstelle auf Basis des internationalen Standards HL7 FHIR® zwischen allen an der klinischen Krebsregistrierung beteiligten und deren Daten nutzenden Institutionen. Die fachlich-medizinische Grundlage für die Arbeit bildeten die Qualitätsaspekte der Konzeptstudie des IQTIG zu einem zukünftigen Qualitätssicherungsverfahren "Lokal begrenztes Prostatakarzinom". Das Datenmodell wurde auf Basis des internationalen Standards HL7 FHIR® entwickelt, um zukünftige Anforderungen an Wiederverwendbarkeit von Informationsobjekten und Interoperabilität zu berücksichtigen. Bei der Modellierung wurden die Datenfelder der Spezifikation der Krebsregister, dem einheitlichen onkologischen Basisdatensatz, genutzt. Das Datenmodell wurde technisch mittels der Plattform Simplifier validiert. Eine fachliche Validierung des Modells kann erst nach der Fertigstellung der Qualitätsindikatorenentwicklung durch das IQTIG erfolgen, da vorab die benötigten Datenfelder nicht bekannt sind. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Informationsmodelle eine bedeutende Rolle bei der Darstellung prozessualer Zusammenhänge spielen, die durch die Modellierung in einem technischen Datenmodell in den Hintergrund treten können. Abstract: Land-use intensification is a major driver of biodiversity loss. However, understanding how different components of land use drive biodiversity loss requires the investigation of multiple trophic levels across spatial scales. Using data from 150 agricultural grasslands in central Europe, we assess the influence of multiple components of local- and landscape-level land use on more than 4,000 above- and belowground taxa, spanning 20 trophic groups. Plot-level land-use intensity is strongly and negatively associated with aboveground trophic groups, but positively or not associated with belowground trophic groups. Meanwhile, both above- and belowground trophic groups respond to landscape-level land use, but to different drivers: aboveground diversity of grasslands is promoted by diverse surrounding land-cover, while belowground diversity is positively related to a high permanent forest cover in the surrounding landscape. These results highlight a role of landscape-level land use in shaping belowground communities, and suggest that revised agroecosystem management strategies are needed to conserve whole-ecosystem biodiversity.

Abstract: Background: Collecting data on the localization of users is a key issue for the MASK (Mobile Airways Sentinel network: the Allergy Diary) App. Data anonymization is a method of sanitization for privacy. The European Commission’s Article 29 Working Party stated that geolocation information is personal data. To assess geolocation using the MASK method and to compare two anonymization methods in the MASK database to find an optimal privacy method. Methods: Geolocation was studied for all people who used the Allergy Diary App from December 2015 to November 2017 and who reported medical outcomes. Two different anonymization methods have been evaluated: Noise addition (randomization) and k-anonymity (generalization). Results: Ninety-three thousand one hundred and sixteen days of VAS were collected from 8535 users and 54,500 (58. 5%) were geolocalized, corresponding to 5428 users. Noise addition was found to be less accurate than k-anonymity using MASK data to protect the users’ life privacy. Discussion: k-anonymity is an acceptable method for the anonymization of MASK data and results can be used for other databases.

Abstract: There are large between- and within-country variations in COVID-19 death rates. Some very low death rate settings such as Eastern Asia, Central Europe, the Balkans and Africa have a common feature of eating large quantities of fermented foods whose intake is associated with the activation of the Nrf2 (Nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2) anti-oxidant transcription factor. There are many Nrf2-interacting nutrients (berberine, curcumin, epigallocatechin gallate, genistein, quercetin, resveratrol, sulforaphane) that all act similarly to reduce insulin resistance, endothelial damage, lung injury and cytokine storm. They also act on the same mechanisms (mTOR: Mammalian target of rapamycin, PPARγ:Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor, NFκB: Nuclear factor kappa B, ERK: Extracellular signal-regulated kinases and eIF2α:Elongation initiation factor 2α). They may as a result be important in mitigating the severity of COVID-19, acting through the endoplasmic reticulum stress or ACE-Angiotensin-II-AT1R axis (AT1R) pathway. Many Nrf2-interacting nutrients are also interacting with TRPA1 and/or TRPV1. Interestingly, geographical areas with very low COVID-19 mortality are those with the lowest prevalence of obesity (Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia). It is tempting to propose that Nrf2-interacting foods and nutrients can re-balance insulin resistance and have a significant effect on COVID-19 severity. It is therefore possible that the intake of these foods may restore an optimal natural balance for the Nrf2 pathway and may be of interest in the mitigation of COVID-19 severity.

33. Sleep-related measurements to assess sleep disturbances among people living with dementia in nursing homes: a systematic review.

Abstract: Background: There is a high prevalence of sleep disturbances among people living with dementia (PLWD) in nursing homes. Reliable and valid measurements are needed to assess these disturbances. The aim of this systematic review was to identify, analyze and synthesize studies of sleep-related measurements to assess sleep disturbances in PLWD., Methods: The databases PubMed, CINAHL, and PsycINFO were systematically searched in 2019; the search was updated in March 2024. The inclusion criteria were as follows: participants with dementia or probable dementia in any care setting; and studies that reported at least one of the following aspects: (I) theoretical and conceptual frameworks, (II) user or patient involvement by type of users in measurement development, (III) feasibility and practicability of measurements, and (IV) results of psychometric analyses. The quality of the included studies was evaluated using the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) criteria and the quality appraisal tool for studies of diagnostic reliability (QAREL) tool., Results: A total of 5169 studies were identified; ultimately, 15 studies describing three self-administered measurements, three proxy-administered measurements and two technological measurements were included. No sleep-related measurement showed acceptable psychometric properties in any of the COSMIN domains., Conclusions: No measurement without adaptation can be recommended for PLWD in nursing homes. If existing measurements are used in clinical practice, the self-perspective of PLWD should be taken into account. If this is no longer fully possible, proxy-rating perspectives in combination could be an option. Future research on sleep-related measurements should be strictly based on international consensus-based psychometric quality criteria., (© The Author(s), 2024. Abstract: Objectives: Metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD) is a fatal lysosomal storage disease characterized by progressive demyelination within the central and peripheral nervous system. Rapid diagnosis is crucial in view of evolving therapeutic options. Strabismus has anecdotally been described as a feature in children with MLD. Our first aim was to examine the prevalence of strabismus as an early or even presenting sign of MLD in two nationwide cohorts. Second, we aimed to investigate the temporal relation between the onset of strabismus and gross motor deterioration, other early onset eye movement disorders and brain white matter abnormalities., Methods: Clinical records of 204 MLD patients at the University Children's Hospital Tubingen and Amsterdam University Medical Center were reviewed on the presence of strabismus and other eye movement disorders. Gross motor deterioration and white matter abnormalities on brain MRI were evaluated by using the Gross Motor Function Classification in MLD and MLD LOES score, respectively., Results: We identified strabismus as an early sign in MLD patients with the late-infantile form, with a prevalence of 27% (N = 17). The onset of strabismus preceded gross motor symptoms and brain white matter abnormalities in 71% and 46% respectively of the cases. Important characteristics were an acute-onset paralytic esotropia, partly accompanied by other eye movement abnormalities, and gadolinium enhancement of the cranial nerves., Conclusions: Acute-onset paralytic strabismus in toddlers should be considered a potential early sign of late-infantile MLD and might result from early cranial nerve involvement. Abstract: Background: Alcohol consumption is a known risk factor for breast cancer. Because breast cancer survivors are already at risk for recurrence, it is important to understand whether these survivors could benefit from survivor-specific recommendations for alcohol consumption., Objectives: The purpose of this article was to review primary research specific to alcohol and breast cancer survivors to see whether those who consume alcohol experience more adverse effects., Methods: This literature review examined nine cohort studies specific to breast cancer survivors, alcohol consumption, and risks for breast cancer recurrence, breast cancer-specific mortality, and second primary breast cancers., Findings: Current guideline recommendations of a safe limit of one drink per day or less may not protect breast cancer survivors from cancer- related adverse events. The authors recommend that breast cancer survivors be educated about the associated risks of alcohol consumption so that they can make informed decisions about usage.

37. [Quality in home care: Review of relevant structural-, process- and outcome-related aspects of care].

Abstract: Introduction: Being cared for in one's own home environment is of great significance for many people in need of care. In addition to care provided by relatives, the care provided by professional home care services is also important. More and more people in need of care are being cared for by relatives together with or solely through such home care services. Because of this, the issue of quality and quality measurement in home care has become increasingly important. The prerequisite for measuring and assessing quality is the definition of specific requirements for medical and nursing care. A comprehensive quality framework for home care has not yet been developed. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the current situation in home care and to identify relevant aspects of care subsequently. Finally, these aspects of care should be presented in a framework model., Methods: In order to describe the situation in home care, a review was conducted based on the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology of a scoping review. The literature was analysed, and the relevant aspects of care were derived by using an inductive approach. Furthermore, these aspects of care were assigned to quality dimensions defined for health care (e. g., patient safety, patient-centeredness) and merged into a quality model of home care., Results: A total of 222 publications were included, and 17 aspects of home care were identified. These involved structural aspects of care and aspects of care for shaping relationships with people in need of care and their family carers, as well as aspects of support for people in need of care and their family carers. Furthermore, process-related and outcome-related aspects of care were identified. The comparison of these aspects with the defined quality dimensions showed that each of these quality dimensions is covered by at least one aspect of care. This results in a comprehensive quality model for home care which can serve as a framework for measuring and assessing quality in home care., Conclusion: The aspects of care identified can be used for the development of instruments such as routine data-based quality indicators and thus allow for the measurement, presentation and assessment of quality in home care., (Copyright © 2021. Abstract: Land-use intensification is a major driver of biodiversity loss. However, understanding how different components of land use drive biodiversity loss requires the investigation of multiple trophic levels across spatial scales. Using data from 150 agricultural grasslands in central Europe, we assess the influence of multiple components of local- and landscape-level land use on more than 4,000 above- and belowground taxa, spanning 20 trophic groups. Plot-level land-use intensity is strongly and negatively associated with aboveground trophic groups, but positively or not associated with belowground trophic groups. Meanwhile, both above- and belowground trophic groups respond to landscape-level land use, but to different drivers: aboveground diversity of grasslands is promoted by diverse surrounding land-cover, while belowground diversity is positively related to a high permanent forest cover in the surrounding landscape. These results highlight a role of landscape-level land use in shaping belowground communities, and suggest that revised agroecosystem management strategies are needed to conserve whole-ecosystem biodiversity.

39. Bracon wasps for ecological pest control-a laboratory experiment.

Abstract: Biological control of pest insects by natural enemies may be an effective, cheap and environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic pesticides. The cosmopolitan parasitoid wasp species Bracon brevicornis Wesmael and B. hebetor Say (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) use lepidopteran species as hosts, including insect pests like Ephestia kuehniella or Ostrinia nubilalis . Here, we compare the reproductive success of both Bracon species on E. kuehniella in a laboratory experiment. We asked (1) how the reproductive success on a single host larva changes with temperature, (2) how it changes with temperature when more host larvae are present and (3) how temperature and availability of host larvae influence the efficacy of Bracon species as biological control agents. In general, differences between B. brevicornis and B. hebetor have been small. For rearing both Bracon species in the laboratory on one host larva, a temperature between 20-27 °C seems appropriate to obtain the highest number of offspring with a female-biased sex ratio. Rearing the braconid wasps on more than one host larva revealed a higher number of total offspring but less offspring per host larva on average. Again, highest numbers of offspring hatched at 27 °C and the sex ratio was independent from temperature. Although no parasitoids hatched at 12 °C and only few at 36 °C, host larvae were still paralyzed. The efficacy of B. brevicornis was higher than 80% at all numbers of host larvae presented at all temperatures while the efficacy of B. hebetor was less than 80% at 12 °C and 27 °C at low numbers of host larvae presented. Abstract: Intensive land use has been shown to alter the composition and functioning of soil communities. Due to their low dispersal ability, oribatid mites are particularly vulnerable to land-use intensification and species which are not adjusted to management-related disturbances become less abundant. We investigated how different land-use parameters in forests and grasslands affect oribatid mite diversity and abundance, with a focus on: (1) species-level impacts, by classifying species as increasing ('winners') or decreasing ('losers') in abundance with higher land-use intensity, and (2) reproductive impact, by investigating whether sexual and parthenogenetic species react differently. We collected 32,542 adult oribatid mites in 60 forests and grasslands of known land-use intensity in two regions of Germany. Diversity and total abundance as well as the proportion of sexual species were higher in forests than in grasslands. Diversity declined with higher land-use intensity in forests, but increased with higher mowing and fertilization in grasslands. Depending on land-use parameter and region, abundance either declined or remained unaffected by increasing intensity. Gravidity was higher in sexual than in parthenogenetic species and sexuals had 1.6× more eggs per gravid female. Proportions of sexual species and gravid females decreased with land-use intensity in forests, but increased with mowing in grasslands. At the species level, 75% of sexuals and 87.5% of parthenogens were 'losers' of higher percentages of dead wood originating from management-related disturbances. Across land-use parameters and habitats, a similar proportion of sexual and parthenogenetic oribatid mite species were 'losers' of high land-use intensity. 41. Narrow environmental niches predict land-use responses and vulnerability of land snail assemblages.

Abstract: Background: How land use shapes biodiversity and functional trait composition of animal communities is an important question and frequently addressed. Land-use intensification is associated with changes in abiotic and biotic conditions including environmental homogenization and may act as an environmental filter to shape the composition of species communities. Here, we investigated the responses of land snail assemblages to land-use intensity and abiotic soil conditions (pH, soil moisture), and analyzed their trait composition (shell size, number of offspring, light preference, humidity preference, inundation tolerance, and drought resistance). We characterized the species' responses to land use to identify 'winners' (species that were more common on sites with high land-use intensity than expected) or 'losers' of land-use intensity (more common on plots with low land-use intensity) and their niche breadth. As a proxy for the environmental 'niche breadth' of each snail species, based on the conditions of the sites in which it occurred, we defined a 5-dimensional niche hypervolume. We then tested whether land-use responses and niches contribute to the species' potential vulnerability suggested by the Red List status., Results: Our results confirmed that the trait composition of snail communities was significantly altered by land-use intensity and abiotic conditions in both forests and grasslands. While only 4% of the species that occurred in forests were significant losers of intensive forest management, the proportion of losers in grasslands was much higher (21%). However, the species' response to land-use intensity and soil conditions was largely independent of specific traits and the species' Red List status (vulnerability). Instead, vulnerability was only mirrored in the species' rarity and its niche hypervolume: threatened species were characterized by low occurrence in forests and low occurrence and abundance in grasslands and by a narrow niche quantified by land-use components and abiotic factors., Conclusion: Land use and environmental responses of land snails were poorly predicted by specific traits or the species' vulnerability, suggesting that it is important to consider complementary risks and multiple niche dimensions.

42. Animal-Mediated Ecosystem Process Rates in Forests and Grasslands are Affected by Climatic Conditions and Land-Use Intensity.

Abstract: Decomposition, vegetation regeneration, and biological control are essential ecosystem functions, and animals are involved in the underlying processes, such as dung removal, seed removal, herbivory, and predation. Despite evidence for declines of animal diversity and abundance due to climate change and land-use intensification, we poorly understand how animal-mediated processes respond to these global change drivers. We experimentally measured rates of four ecosystem processes in 134 grassland and 149 forest plots in Germany and tested their response to climatic conditions and land-use intensity, that is, grazing, mowing, and fertilization in grasslands and the proportion of harvested wood, non-natural trees, and deadwood origin in forests. For both climate and land use, we distinguished between short-term effects during the survey period and medium-term effects during the preceding years. Forests had significantly higher process rates than grasslands. In grasslands, the climatic effects on the process rates were similar or stronger than land-use effects, except for predation; land-use intensity negatively affected several process rates. In forests, the land-use effects were more pronounced than the climatic effects on all processes except for predation. The proportion of non-natural trees had the greatest impact on the process rates in forests. The proportion of harvested wood had negative effects, whereas the proportion of anthropogenic deadwood had positive effects on some processes. The effects of climatic conditions and land-use intensity on process rates mirror climatic and habitat effects on animal abundance, activity, and resource quality. 43. Seed type, habitat and time of day influence post-dispersal seed removal in temperate ecosystems.

Abstract: Seed survival is of great importance for the performance of plant species and it is strongly affected by post-dispersal seed removal by either different animals such as granivorous species and secondary dispersers or abiotic conditions such as wind or water. The success of post-dispersal seed removal depends on seed specific traits including seed size, the presence of coats or elaiosomes, the mode of seed dispersion, and on the habitat in which seeds happen to arrive. In the present study we asked how seed traits (dehulled vs. intact; size; dispersal mode), habitat (forest vs. grassland), and time of day (night vs. day) influence post-dispersal seed removal of the four plant species Chelidonium majus, Lotus corniculatus, Tragopogon pratensis and Helianthus annuus . Seed removal experiments were performed in three regions in Hesse, Germany. The results showed different, inconsistent influences of time of day, depending on habitat and region, but consistent variation across seed types. C. majus and dehulled H. annuus seeds had the fastest removal rates. The impact of the habitat on post-dispersal seed removal was very low, only intact H. annuus seeds were removed at significantly higher rates in grasslands than in forests. Our study demonstrates consistent differences across seed types across different habitats and time: smaller seeds and those dispersed by animals had a faster removal rate. 44. Nutritional quality modulates trait variability.

Abstract: Background: Trait based functional and community ecology is en vogue . Most studies, however, ignore phenotypical diversity by characterizing entire species considering only trait means rather than their variability. Phenotypical variability may arise from genotypical differences or from ecological factors (e.g., nutritionally imbalanced diet), and these causes can usually not be separated in natural populations. We used a single genotype from a parthenogenetic model system (the oribatid mite Archegozetes longisetosus Aoki) to exclude genotypical differences. We investigated patterns of dietary (10 different food treatments) induced trait variation by measuring the response of nine different traits (relating to life history, morphology or exocrine gland chemistry)., Results: Nutritional quality (approximated by carbon-to-nitrogen ratios) influenced all trait means and their variation. Some traits were more prone to variation than others. Furthermore, the "threshold elemental ratio"- rule of element stoichiometry applied to phenotypic trait variation. Imbalanced food (i.e. food not able to fully meet the nutritional demands of an animal) led to lower trait mean values, but also to a higher variation of traits., Conclusion: Imbalanced food led not only to lower trait value averages, but also to higher trait variability. There was a negative relationship between both parameters, indicating a direct link of both, average trait levels and trait variation to nutritional quality. 45. Seasonal fluctuation of oribatid mite communities in forest microhabitats.

Abstract: Oribatid mites are abundant and diverse decomposers in almost all terrestrial microhabitats, especially in temperate forests. Although their functional importance in the decomposition system in these forests has been investigated, spatio-temporal patterns of oribatid mite communities inhabiting different microhabitats have largely been neglected. Therefore, we (i) investigated seasonal fluctuation (monthly over one year) in oribatid-mite community structure and specificity to three microhabitats (moss, dead wood and litter) and (ii) analyzed the influence of air temperature and overall air humidity on seasonal community changes. In total, 57,398 adult oribatid mite individuals were collected. Total abundance, species richness and diversity differed among microhabitats. Seasonal changes were most pronounced in moss and least in litter. While overall air humidity had no influence on species distribution and community changes, air temperature positively influenced species richness and diversity, again most pronounced in moss. The calculated environmental temperature occurrence niche showed that 35% of adult oribatid mite species occurred at higher air temperatures. Furthermore, interaction/bipartite networks were more generalized-i.e., species were more equally distributed among moss, dead wood and litter-when ambient air temperatures were higher. Abstract: Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is the major cause of nonrelapse morbidity and mortality after allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT). Prevention and treatment of GVHD remain inadequate and commonly lead to end-organ dysfunction and opportunistic infection. The role of interleukin (IL)-17 and IL-22 in GVHD remains uncertain, due to an apparent lack of lineage fidelity and variable and contextually determined protective and pathogenic effects. We demonstrate that donor T cell-derived IL-22 significantly exacerbates cutaneous chronic GVHD and that IL-22 is produced by highly inflammatory donor CD4 + T cells posttransplantation. IL-22 and IL-17A derive from both independent and overlapping lineages, defined as T helper (Th)22 and IL-22 + Th17 cells. Donor Th22 and IL-22 + Th17 cells share a similar IL-6-dependent developmental pathway, and while Th22 cells arise independently of the IL-22 + Th17 lineage, IL-17 signaling to donor Th22 directly promotes their development in allo-SCT. Importantly, while both IL-22 and IL-17 mediate skin GVHD, Th17-induced chronic GVHD can be attenuated by IL-22 inhibition in preclinical systems. In the clinic, high levels of both IL-17A and IL-22 expression are present in the skin of patients with GVHD after allo-SCT. Abstract: Cyanogenesis denotes a chemical defensive strategy where hydrogen cyanide (HCN, hydrocyanic or prussic acid) is produced, stored, and released toward an attacking enemy. The high toxicity and volatility of HCN requires both chemical stabilization for storage and prevention of accidental self-poisoning. The few known cyanogenic animals are exclusively mandibulate arthropods (certain myriapods and insects) that store HCN as cyanogenic glycosides, lipids, or cyanohydrins. Here, we show that cyanogenesis has also evolved in the speciose Chelicerata. The oribatid mite Oribatula tibialis uses the cyanogenic aromatic ester mandelonitrile hexanoate (MNH) for HCN storage, which degrades via two different pathways, both of which release HCN. MNH is emitted from exocrine opisthonotal oil glands, which are potent organs for chemical defense in most oribatid mites.

48. Resource availability as driving factor of the reproductive mode in soil microarthropods (Acari, Oribatida).

Abstract: The availability of high quality resources is an important factor driving community structure and reproductive mode of animals. Parthenogenetic reproduction prevails when resources are available in excess, whereas sexuality correlates with resource shortage. We investigated the effect of resource availability on the community structure of oribatid mites in a laboratory experiment. Availability of food resources was increased by addition of glucose to leaf litter and reduced by leaching of nutrients from leaf litter. Experimental systems were incubated at three different temperatures to establish different regimes of resource exploitation. Community structure of oribatids and numbers of eggs per female were measured over a period of ten months. We expected the density of oribatid mites to decline in the reduced litter quality treatment but to increase in the glucose treatment. Both effects were assumed to be more pronounced at higher temperatures. We hypothesized sexual species to be less affected than parthenogenetic species by reduced resource quality due to higher genetic diversity allowing more efficient exploitation of limited resources, but to be outnumbered by parthenogenetic species in case of resource addition due to faster reproduction. In contrast to our hypotheses, both sexual and parthenogenetic oribatid mite species responded similarly with their densities declining uniformly during incubation. The parthenogenetic Brachychthoniidae and Tectocepheus dominated early in the experiment but were replaced later by parthenogenetic Desmonomata and Rhysotritia. In parthenogenetic species the number of eggs per female increased during the experiment while the number of eggs in sexual females remained constant or decreased slightly; in general, egg numbers were higher in sexual than in parthenogenetic species. The results indicate that for sustaining oribatid mite populations other resources than litter and associated saprotrophic microorganisms are needed. They also indicate that there are two groups of parthenogenetically reproducing species: exploiters of easily available resources and consumers of leaf litter associated resources.

Abstract: HeLa cells and synovial tissue sections were used for visualizing poly A+-mRNA after in situ hybridization. We describe a method to biotinylate hybridization probes by tailing oligo-dT nucleotides with biotinyl-dUTP using terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (E.C.2.7.7.3.1.). The hybrids were detected by using the strepavidin-biotin-peroxidase complex (ABC method). The reaction product of the peroxidase staining in the cells and in the tissue sections, is quantitated by the method of plug- and scanning photometry respectively.
